Damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs) seen in the spectra of high-z QSOs allow us to probe the physical conditions in protogalaxies. Our understanding of physical conditions in DLAs at high-z is primarily based on the absorption lines of H_2 molecules and fine-structure transitions. Another important way of probing the thermal state of interstellar medium in these systems is by studying the 21-cm absorption in the spectra of background quasars. Here we report the main results of our GMRT survey to search for 21-cm absorption in a representative and unbiased sample of 35 DLA candidates at 1.10<z<1.45. Our sample of DLA candidates is drawn from the strong MgII systems in SDSS DR5 and has resulted in discovery of 9 new 21-cm absorbers. Prior to our survey only one 21-cm absorber was known in the redshift range: 0.7<z<2. This survey has allowed us to investigate the dependence of detectability of 21-cm absorption on the properties of UV absorption lines detected in SDSS spectra and estimate the number per unit redshift of 21-cm absorbers. Our GMRT survey provides a representative sample of systems that can be used in combination with various follow-up observations: (1) for investigating the physical conditions in the absorbing gas using spin temperature measurements, (2) for investigating the effect of metallicity and dust content on the detectability of 21-cm absorption, (3) for studying the morphology of the absorbing gas and (4) for probing the time evolution of various fundamental constants. Results from the first phase of our survey are presented in Gupta et al. (2007). Detailed description of the entire sample and results from the survey are presented in Gupta et al. (2009).
In this thesis, we systematically analyze the properties of intergalactic \Ovi absorbing gas structures at high redshift using optical spectra with intermediate ($\sim 6.6$ \kms FWHM) and high ($\sim 4.0$ \kms FWHM) resolution, obtained with UVES/VLT. We complement our analysis with synthetic spectra obtained from extensive cosmological simulations that are part of the OWLS project (Schaye et al. 2010). Our main conclusions are: 1) Both the observations and simulations imply that \Ovi absorbers at high redshift arise in structures spanning a broad range of scales and different physical conditi…
We present a detailed analysis of a very unusual sub-damped Lyman alpha (sub-DLA) system at redshift z=2.304 towards the quasar Q0453-423, based on high signal-to-noise (S/N), high-resolution spectral data obtained with VLT/UVES. With a neutral hydrogen column density of log N(HI)=19.23 and a metallicity of -1.61 as indicated by [OI/HI] the sub-DLA mimics the properties of many other optically thick absorbers at this redshift. A very unusual feature of this system is, however, the lack of any CIV absorption at the redshift of the neutral hydrogen absorption, although the relevant spectral regi…
We have measured the 2D 2-point correlation function, Xi_AG, between low column density Ly-alpha absorbers and galaxies at a redshift z ~ 1. We measured Ly-alpha absorbers between redshifts z=0.68 to 1.51 over a total redshift path length of Delta z=1.08 from HST STIS E230M absorption spectra towards the quasars HE 1122-1648 (z=2.4) and PKS 1127-145 (z=1.187). The column density of the Ly-alpha absorbers ranged from 13.2< log(N_HI (cm^-2))<17.4, with a median column density of log(N_HI)=14.0 . A total of 193 galaxy redshifts within the surrounding 6.8' x 5.7' field of view of both quasars were…
To investigate the evolution of metal-enriched gas over recent cosmic epochs as well as to characterize the diffuse, ionized, metal-enriched circumgalactic medium (CGM), we have conducted a blind survey for C IV absorption systems in 89 QSO sightlines observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS). We have identified 42 absorbers at z < 0.16, comprising the largest uniform blind sample size to date in this redshift range. Our measurements indicate an increasing C IV absorber number density per comoving path length (dN/dX = 7.5 +/- 1.1) and modestly increasing …
The kinematics of MgII absorbers is the key to understanding the origin of cool, metal-enriched gas clouds in the circumgalactic medium of massive quiescent galaxies. Exploiting the fact that the cloud line-of-sight velocity distribution is the only unknown for predicting the redshift-space distortion~(RSD) of MgII absorbers from their 3D real-space distribution around galaxies, we develop a novel method to infer the cool cloud kinematics from the redshift-space galaxy-cloud cross-correlation $ξ^{s}$. We measure $ξ^{s}$ for ${\sim}10^4$ MgII absorbers around ${\sim}8{\times}10^5$ CMASS galaxie…
We present redshift space two-point ($ξ$), three-point ($ζ$) and reduced three-point (Q) correlations of Ly$α$ absorbers (Voigt profile components having HI column density, $N_{\rm HI}>10^{13.5}$cm$^{-2}$) over three redshift bins spanning $1.7< z<3.5$ using high-resolution spectra of 292 quasars. We detect positive $ξ$ up to 8 $h^{-1}$ cMpc in all three redshift bins. The strongest detection of $ζ=1.81\pm 0.59$ (with Q$=0.68\pm 0.23$), is in $z=1.7-2.3$ bin at $1-2h^{-1}$ cMpc. The measured $ξ$ and $ζ$ values show an increasing trend with $N_{\rm HI}$, while Q remains relatively independent o…
We use a halo occupation approach to connect MgII absorbers to dark matter halos as a function of redshift. Using the model constructed in Tinker & Chen (2008), we parameterize the conditional probability of an absorber of equivalent width Wr being produced by a halo of mass M_h at a given redshift, P(Wr|M_h,z). We constrain the free parameters of the model by matching the observed statistics of MgII absorbers: the frequency function f(Wr), the redshift evolution n(z), and the clustering bias b(Wr). The redshift evolution of Wr>1 A absorbers increases from z=0.4 to z=2, while the total halo cr…
We have identified 469 MgII doublet systems having W_r >= 0.02 Å in 252 Keck/HIRES and UVES/VLT quasar spectra over the redshift range 0.1 < z < 2.6. Using the largest sample yet of 188 weak MgII systems (0.02 Å <= W_r < 0.3 Å), we calculate their absorber redshift path density, dN/dz. We find clear evidence of evolution, with dN/dz peaking at z ~ 1.2, and that the product of the absorber number density and cross section decreases linearly with increasing redshift; weak MgII absorbers seem to vanish above z ~ 2.7. If the absorbers are ionized by the UV background, we estimate number densities …
We wish to study the extent and subparsec scale spatial structure of intervening quasar absorbers, mainly those involving neutral and molecular gas. We have selected quasar absorption systems with high spectral resolution and good S/N data, with some of their lines falling on quasar emission features. By investigating the consistency of absorption profiles seen for lines formed either against the quasar continuum source or on the much more extended emission line region (ELR), we can probe the extent and structure of the foreground absorber over the extent of the ELR (0.3-1 pc). The spatial cov…
Doubly ionized silicon (SiIII) is a powerful tracer of diffuse ionized gas inside and outside of galaxies. It can be observed in the local Universe in ultraviolet (UV) absorption against bright extragalactic background sources. We here present an extensive study of intervening SiIII-selected absorbers and their relation to the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxies at low redshift (z<=0.1), based on the analysis of UV absorption spectra along 303 extragalactic lines of sight obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Along a total redshift p…
Using Voigt-profile-fitting procedures on Keck HIRES spectra of nine QSOs we identify 1099 CIV absorber components clumped in 201 systems outside the Lyman forest over 1.6 < z < 4.4. With associated SiIV, CII, SiII and NV where available we investigate bulk statistical and ionization properties of the components and systems and find no significant change in redshift for CIV and SiIV while CII, SiII and NV change substantially. The CIV components exhibit strong clustering but no clustering is detected for systems on scales from 150 km/s out to 50000 km/s. We conclude the clustering is due entir…
We report the discovery of two remarkable high-opacity HI 21cm absorbers against low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs), at $z = 1.2166$ towards J0229+0044 and at $z=1.1630$ towards J0229+0053. The absorbers were detected in an unbiased Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope survey for HI 21cm absorption against radio sources in the DEEP2 survey fields, covering $z \approx 0.73-1.53$, and including sources without known redshifts. The velocity-integrated HI 21cm optical depths are $(74.2 \pm 7.8)$ km s$^{-1}$ (J0229+0044) and $(78.41 \pm 0.81)$ km s$^{-1}$ (J0229+0053), higher than that of any …
Physical properties of Damped Lyman-alpha absorbers and their evolution are closely related to galaxy formation and evolution theories, and have important cosmological implications. H I 21 cm absorption study is one useful way of measuring the temperature of these systems. In this work, very strong constraints on the temperature of two Damped Lyman-alpha absorbers at z > 3 are derived from low radio frequency observations. The H I spin temperature is found to be greater than 2000 K for both the absorbers. The high spin temperature of these high-redshift systems is in agreement with the trend f…
Recent searches for the hosts of high-redshift ($z \sim 4$) damped Ly$α$ absorbers (DLAs) have detected bright galaxies at distances of tens of kpc from the DLA. Using the FIRE-2 cosmological zoom simulations, we argue that these relatively large distances are due to a predominantly cool and neutral inner circumgalactic medium (CGM) surrounding high-redshift galaxies. The inner CGM is cool because of the short cooling time of hot gas in $\lesssim10^{12}$ Msun halos, which implies that accretion and feedback energy are radiated quickly, while it is neutral due to the high volume densities and c…
We describe the MgII Absorber-Galaxy Catalog, MAGIICAT, a compilation of 182 spectroscopically identified intermediate redshift (0.07 < z < 1.1) galaxies with measurements of MgII 2796, 2803 absorption from their circumgalactic medium within projected distances of 200 kpc from background quasars. In this work, we present "isolated" galaxies, which are defined as having no spectroscopically identified galaxy within a projected distance of 100 kpc and a line of sight velocity separation of 500 km/s. We standardized all galaxy properties to the Lambda CDM cosmology and galaxy luminosities, absolu…
(Abbreviated) From six spectra of high-z QSOs, we select eleven metal-rich, Z>=Z_solar, and optically-thin to the ionizing radiation, N(HI)<10^17 cm^-2, absorption systems ranging between z=1.5 and z=2.9 and revealing lines of different ions in subsequent ionization stages. The majority of the systems (10 from 11) show abundance patterns which relate them to outflows from low and intermediate mass stars. All systems have sub-kpc linear sizes along the line-of-sight with many less than 20 pc. In several systems, silicon is deficient, presumably due to the depletion onto dust grains in the envel…
We present a generic and fully-automatic method aimed at detecting absorption lines in the spectra of astronomical objects. The algorithm estimates the source continuum flux using a dimensionality reduction technique, nonnegative matrix factorization, and then detects and identifies metal absorption lines. We apply it to a sample of ~100,000 quasar spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and compile a sample of ~40,000 Mg II & Fe II absorber systems, spanning the redshift range 0.4< z < 2.3. The corresponding catalog is publicly available. We study the statistical properties of these absorbe…
We report on the observed properties of the plasma revealed through high signal-to-noise (S/N) observations of 54 intervening O VI absorption systems containing 85 O VI and 133 H I components in a blind survey of 14 QSOs observed at ~18 km s-1 resolution with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) over a redshift path of 3.52 at z < 0.5. Simple systems with one or two H I components and one O VI component comprise 50% of the systems. For a sample of 45 well-aligned absorption components where the temperature can be estimated, we find evidence for cool photoionized gas in 31 (69%) and warm gas (…
Ultraviolet observations of the QSO 3C 263 (zem = 0.652) with COS and FUSE reveal O VI absorption systems at z = 0.06342 and 0.14072 . WIYN multi-object spectrograph observations provide information about the galaxies associated with the absorbers. The multi-phase system at z = 0.06342 traces cool photoionized gas and warm collisionally ionized gas associated with a L ~ 0.31L* compact spiral emission line galaxy with an impact parameter of 63 kpc. The cool photoionized gas in the absorber is well modeled with log U ~ -2.6, log N(H) ~17.8, log n(H) ~ -3.3 and [Si/H] = -0.14\pm0.23. The collisio…
Overdense, metal-rich regions, shielded from stellar radiation might remain neutral throughout reionization and produce metal as well as 21 cm absorption lines. Simultaneous absorption from metals and 21 cm can complement each other as probes of underlying gas properties. We use Aurora, a suite of high resolution radiation-hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation, to investigate the occurrence of such "aligned" absorbers. We calculate absorption spectra for 21 cm, OI, CII, SiII and FeII. We find velocity windows with absorption from at least one metal and 21 cm, and classify the aligned …
We report results from a deep search for redshifted HI 21cm absorption in 55 strong MgII$λ$2796 absorbers (having $W (MgII) > 0.5 Å$) at intermediate redshifts, $0.58 < z_{\rm abs} < 1.70$, with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). Nine detections of HI 21cm absorption were obtained, all at $1.17 < z_{\rm abs} < 1.68$, including three systems reported earlier by Gupta et al. (2007). Absorption was not detected at $> 3σ$ significance in 32 other MgII absorbers, with 26 of these providing strong upper limits to the HI 21cm optical depth, $τ_{3σ} < 0.013$…
We consider the physical conditions and origin of the z = 0.0777 absorption system observed in C III, C II, Si III, C IV, O VI, and H I absorption along the line of sight towards the quasar PHL 1811. We analysed the HST/STIS and FUSE spectra of this quasar and compared the results to Cloudy photoionization and collisional ionization models in order to derive densities, temperatures, and metallicities of the absorbing gas. The absorption can be explained by two C III clouds, offset by 35 km/s in velocity, with metallicities of ~one-tenth the solar value. One cloud has a density of order n_H = 1…
We report a detection of an absorption line at ~44.8 Å in a > 500 ks Chandra HRC-S/LETG X-ray grating spectrum of the blazar H 2356-309. This line can be identified as intervening CV-Kα absorption, at z\approx0.112, produced by a warm (log T = 5.1 K) intergalactic absorber. The feature is significant at a 2.9σ level (accounting for the number of independent redshift trials). We estimate an equivalent hydrogen column density of log N_H=19.05 (Z/Zsun)^-1 cm^-2. Unlike other previously reported FUV/X-ray metal detections of warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), this CV absorber lies in a region w…
The evolution of the expansion rate of the Universe results in a drift in the redshift of distant sources over time. A measurement of this drift would provide us with a direct probe of expansion history. The Lyman alpha forest has been recognized as the best candidate for this experiment, but the signal would be weak and it will take next generation large telescopes coupled with ultra-stable high resolution spectrographs to reach the cm/s resolution required. One source of noise that has not yet been assessed is the transverse motion of Lyman alpha absorbers, which varies the gravitational pot…
We report the first comparative study of strong MgII absorbers seen towards radio-loud quasars of core-dominated (CDQs) and lobe-dominated (LDQs) types and normal QSOs. The MgII associated absorption systems having a velocity offset v < 5000km/s from the systemic velocity of the background quasar were also excluded. Existing spectroscopic data for redshift-matched sightlines of 3975 CDQs and 1583 LDQs, covering a emission redshift range 0.39-4.87, were analysed and 864 strong MgII absorbers were found, covering the redshift range 0.45-2.17. The conclusions reached using this well-defined large…
We combine cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations with accurate radiative transfer corrections to investigate the relation between strong HI absorbers (N_HI >~ 10^17 /cm^2) and galaxies at redshift z = 3. We find a strong anti-correlation between the column density and the impact parameter that connects the absorber to the nearest galaxy. The median impact parameters for Lyman Limit (LL) and Damped Lyman-α (DLA) systems are ~10 and ~1 proper kpc, respectively. If normalized to the size of the halo of the nearest central galaxy, the median impact parameters for LL and DLA systems become ~1 an…
We present the results of a survey for CaII 3934,3969 absorption-line systems culled from ~ 95,000 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 and Data Release 9 quasar spectra. With 435 doublets identified in the catalog, this list is the largest CaII catalog compiled to date, spanning redshifts z < 1.34, which corresponds to the most recent ~ 8.9 Gyrs of the history of the Universe. We derive statistics on the CaII rest equivalent width distribution (REW) and incidence (number density per unit redshift). We find that the lambda3934 REW distribution cannot be described by a single exponent…
A late end to reionisation at redshift $z\simeq 5.3$ is consistent with observed spatial variations in the Ly$α$ forest transmission and the deficit of Ly$α$ emitting galaxies around extended Ly$α$ absorption troughs at $z=5.5$. In this model, large islands of neutral hydrogen should persist in the diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM) until $z\simeq 6$. We use a novel, hybrid approach that combines high resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations with radiative transfer to predict the incidence of strong 21 cm forest absorbers with optical depths $τ_{21}>10^{-2}$ from the diffuse IGM in t…
We present the results of a systematic Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) survey of 21-cm absorption in a representative and unbiased sample of 35 strong MgII systems in the redshift range: zabs~1.10-1.45, 33 of which have W_r>1 Å. The survey using ~400hrs of telescope time has resulted in 9 new 21-cm detections and stringent 21-cm optical depth upper limits (median 3-sigma optical depth per 10 km/s of 0.017) for the remaining 26 systems. This is by far the largest number of 21-cm detections from any single survey of intervening absorbers. Prior to our survey no intervening 21-cm system wa…
We present a comprehensive catalog of ultraviolet HST/STIS and FUSE absorbers in the low-redshift IGM at z<0.4. The catalog draws from the extensive literature on IGM absorption, and it reconciles discrepancies among previous catalogs through a critical evaluation of all reported absorption features in light of new HST/COS data. We report on 746 HI absorbers down to a rest-frame equivalent width of 12 milliAngstroms over a maximum redshift path length Deltaz=5.38. We also confirm 111 OVI absorbers, 29 CIV absorbers, and numerous absorption features due to other metal ions. We characterize the …
(Abridged) We present a systematic study of weak intervening CaII absorbers at low redshift (z<0.5), based on the analysis of archival high resolution (R>45,000) optical spectra of 304 quasars and active galactic nuclei observed with VLT/UVES. Along a total redshift path of Dz~100 we detected 23 intervening CaII absorbers in both the CaII H & K lines, with rest frame equivalent widths W_r,3934=15-799 mA and column densities log N(CaII)=11.25-13.04. We obtain a bias corrected number density of weak intervening CaII absorbers of dN/dz=0.117+-0.044 at z=0.35 for absorbers with log N(CaII)>11.65. …
The HI 21cm absorption optical depth and the N(HI) derived from Lya absorption can be combined to yield the spin temperature (Ts) of DLAs. Although Ts measurements exist for samples of DLAs with z <0.6 and z >1.7, the intermediate redshift regime currently contains only 2 HI 21cm detections, leading to a `redshift desert' that spans 4 Gyrs of cosmic time. To connect the low and high z regimes, we present observations of the Lya line of six 0.6<z<1.7 HI 21cm absorbers. The dataset is complemented by both VLBA observations (to derive the absorber covering factor, f), and optical echelle spectra …
The Complete Optical and Radio Absorption Line System (CORALS) survey has previously been used to demonstrate that the number density, gas and metals content of z>1.6 damped Lyman alpha systems is not significantly under-estimated in magnitude limited surveys. In this paper, a sample of strong MgII absorbers selected from the optically complete 0.7 < z < 1.6 CORALS sample of Ellison et al. is used to assess the potential of dust bias at intermediate redshifts. From echelle spectra of all CORALS absorbers with MgII lambda 2796 and FeII lambda 2600 rest equivalent widths > 0.5 A in the redshift …
We present an analysis of the Ly-a forest toward 3C 273 from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph at ~7 km/s resolution, along with re-processed data from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. The high UV flux of 3C 273 allows us to probe the weak, low z absorbers. The main sample consists of 21 HI absorbers that we could discriminate to a sensitivity of log NHI~ 12.5. The redshift density for absorbers with 13.1<log NHI<14.0 is ~1.5 sigma below the mean for other lines of sight; for log NHI >= 12.5, it is consistent with numerical model predictions. The Doppler parameter distributio…
We present an HI 21 cm absorption survey with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) of galaxy-quasar pairs selected by combining data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters (FIRST) survey. Our sample consists of 23 sightlines through 15 low-redshift foreground galaxy - background quasar pairs with impact parameters ranging from 1.7 kpc up to 86.7 kpc. We detected one absorber in the GBT survey from the foreground dwarf galaxy, GQ1042+0747, at an impact parameter of 1.7 kpc and another possible absorber in our follow-up Very Large Array (VL…
We have analysed a large data set of OVI absorber candidates found in the spectra of 3702 SDSS quasars, focusing on a subsample of 387 AGN sightlines with an average S/N>5.0, allowing for detection of absorbers above rest-frame equivalents widths W_r>0.19 A for the OVI 1032 A component. Accounting for random interlopers mimicking an OVI doublet, we derive for the first time a secure lower limit for the redshift number density $ΔN / Δz$ for redshifts z_abs>2.8. With extensive Monte Carlo simulations we quantify the losses of absorbers due to blending with the ubiquitous Lyman forest lines, and …
We present chemical abundance measurements from high-resolution observations of 5 sub-damped Lyman-alpha absorbers at 1.7 < z < 2.4 observed with the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle (MIKE) spectrograph on the 6.5-m Magellan II Clay telescope. Lines of Zn II, Mg I, Mg II, Al II, Al III, S II, Si II, Si IV, C II, C II*, C IV, Ni II, Mn II and Fe II were detected and column densities were determined. The metallicity of the absorbing gas, inferred from the nearly undepleted element Zn, is in the range of < -0.95 to +0.25 dex for the five absorbers in our sample, with three of the systems being ne…
We measure the large-scale clustering of MgII λλ2796,2803 absorbers with respect to a population of luminous red galaxies (LRGs) at z \sim 0.5. From the cross-correlation measurements between MgII absorbers and LRGs, we calculate the mean bias of the dark matter halos in which the absorbers reside. We investigate systematic uncertainties in the clustering measurements due to the sample selection of LRGs and due to uncertainties in photometric redshifts. First, we compare the cross-correlation amplitudes determined using a it flux-limited LRG sample and a volume-limited one. The comparison show…
We investigate the physical state of HI absorbing gas at low redshift (z = 0.25) using a subset of cosmological, hydrodynamic simulations from the OWLS project, focusing in particular on broad (b_HI > 40 km/s) HI Lyman-Alpha absorbers (BLAs), which are believed to originate in shock-heated gas in the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). Our fiducial model, which includes radiative cooling by heavy elements and feedback by supernovae and active galactic nuclei, predicts that by z = 0.25 nearly 60 per cent of the gas mass ends up at densities and temperatures characteristic of the WHIM and we f…
We have performed an analysis of over 34,000 MgII doublets at 0.36 < z < 2.29 in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data-Release 7 quasar spectra; the catalog, advanced data products, and tools for analysis are publicly available. The catalog was divided into 14 small redshift bins with roughly 2500 doublets in each, and from Monte-Carlo simulations, we estimate 50% completeness at rest equivalent width W_r ~ 0.8 Angstrom. The equivalent-width frequency distribution is described well by an exponential model at all redshifts, and the distribution becomes flatter with increasing redshift, i.e., the…
We searched for evidence of reddening of background SDSS QSO spectra due to dust in intervening DLA systems. We utilise the Data Releases 5 and 7 to arrive at sample sizes of 475 (DR5) and 676 (DR7) absorbers, based on two different published lists of SDSS DLAs. Both samples span roughly the redshift range of 2.2 < z_abs < 5.2, with a mean of z~3.0, and the majority of the DLAs (75%) below z=3.3. We construct geometric mean spectra in the absorber restframes ranging from 1240 to ~2800 A, and composite spectra of samples matching the 'DLA' QSOs in i band magnitude and emission redshift z_em, bu…
We present a catalogue of MgII absorption systems obtained from high resolution UVES/VLT data of 77 QSOs in the redshift range 0.6 < z < 2.0, and down to an equivalent width W_0 > 0.1 Å. The statistical properties of our sample are found to be in agreement with those from previous work in the literature. However, we point out that the previously observed increase with redshift of dN/dz for weak absorbers, pertains exclusively to very weak absorbers with W_0 < 0.1 Å. Instead, dN/dz for absorbers with W_0 in the range 0.1-0.3 Åactually decreases with redshift, similarly to the case of strong abs…
We report detections of 39 2175-Å dust extinction bump candidates associated with strong Mg II absorption lines at z$\sim$ 1--1.8 on quasar spectra in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR3. These strong Mg II absorption line systems are detected among 2,951 strong Mg II absorbers with the rest equivalent width $W_r\lambda2796 >$ 1.0Å at $1.0 < z < 1.86$, which is part of a full sample of 7,421 strong Mg II absorbers compiled by Prochter et al. (2006). The redshift range of the absorbers is chosen to allow the 2175-Å extinction features to be completely covered within the SDSS spectrograph operat…
We present new high-precision measurements of the opacity of the intergalactic and circumgalactic medium (IGM, CGM) at <z>=2.4. Using Voigt profile fits to the full Lyman alpha and Lyman beta forests in 15 high-resolution high-S/N spectra of hyperluminous QSOs, we make the first statistically robust measurement of the frequency of absorbers with HI column densities 14 < log(NHI) < 17.2. We also present the first measurements of the frequency distribution of HI absorbers in the volume surrounding high-z galaxies (the CGM, 300 pkpc), finding that the incidence of absorbers in the CGM is much hig…
We present composite spectra constructed from a sample of 242,150 Lyman-alpha (Lya) forest absorbers at redshifts 2.4<z<3.1 identified in quasar spectra from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) as part of Data Release 9 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III. We select forest absorbers by their flux in bins 138 km/s wide (approximately the size of the BOSS resolution element). We split these absorbers into five samples spanning the range of flux -0.05 < F<0.45. Tests on a smaller sample of high-resolution spectra show that our three strongest absorption bins would probe circumgalac…
Quasar damped Ly-alpha (DLA) absorption line systems with redshifts z<1.65 are used to trace neutral gas over approximately 70 per cent of the most recent history of the Universe. However, such systems fall in the UV and are rarely found in blind UV spectroscopic surveys. Therefore, it has been difficult to compile a moderate-sized sample of UV DLAs in any narrow cosmic time interval. However, DLAs are easy to identify in low-resolution spectra because they have large absorption rest equivalent widths. We have performed an efficient strong-MgII-selected survey for UV DLAs at redshifts z=[0.42,…
Using hydrodynamic simulations we compute the metal enrichment history of the intergalactic medium (IGM). We show that galactic superwind (GSW) feedback can transport metals to the IGM and that the properties of simulated metal absorbers match observations. The distance of influence of GSW is typically limited to >0.5Mpc and within regions of overdensity >10. Most CIV and OVI absorbers are located within shocked regions of elevated temperature (T>2x10^4K), overdensity (>10), and metallicity ([-2.5,-0.5]). OVI absorbers have typically higher metallicity, lower density and higher temperature tha…
We investigate the origin and physical properties of OVI absorbers at low redshift (z = 0.25) using a subset of cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations from the OverWhelmingly Large Simulations (OWLS) project. Intervening OVI absorbers are believed to trace shock-heated gas in the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) and may thus play a key role in the search for the missing baryons in the present-day Universe. When compared to observations, the predicted distributions of the different OVI line parameters (column density, Doppler parameter, rest equivalent width) from our simulations exhibit …
We present new far-ultraviolet spectra from the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (HST/COS) of the BL Lac object 1ES1553+113 covering the wavelength range 1135-1795 A. The data show a smooth continuum with a wealth of narrow absorption features arising in the ISM and IGM. These features include 41 Lya absorbers at 0<z<0.43, fourteen of which are detected in multiple Lyman lines and six in one or more metal lines. We analyze a metal-rich triplet of Lya absorbers at z=0.188 in which OVI, NV, and CIII absorption is detected. Silicon ions (SiIII/IV) are not detected to fairly strong upper limits, and we…
We report the detection of a strong HI 21-cm absorption system at z=0.5344, as well as a candidate system at z=0.3389, in the sight-line towards the z=2.64 quasar MG J0414+0534. This, in addition to the absorption at the host redshift and the other two intervening absorbers, takes the total to four (possibly five). The previous maximum number of 21-cm absorbers detected along a single sight-line is two and so we suspect that this number of gas-rich absorbers is in some way related to the very red colour of the background source. Despite this, no molecular gas (through OH absorption) has yet be…
We present Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) measurements of metal abundances in eight 0.083<z<0.321 damped Lyman-α(DLA) and sub-damped Ly-α absorption systems serendipitously discovered in the COS-Halos survey. We find that these systems show a large range in metallicities, with -1.10<[Z/H]<0.31, similar to the spread found at higher redshifts. These low-redshift systems on average have subsolar metallicities, but do show a rise in metallicity over cosmic time when compared to higher-redshift systems. We find the average sub-DLA metallicity is higher than the average DLA metallicity at all re…
We use high-quality, medium-resolution {\it Hubble Space Telescope}/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (\HST/COS) observations of 82 UV-bright AGN at redshifts $z_{AGN}<0.85$ to construct the largest survey of the low-redshift intergalactic medium (IGM) to date: 5343 individual extragalactic absorption lines in HI and 25 different metal-ion species grouped into 2610 distinct redshift systems at $z_{abs}<0.75$ covering total redshift pathlengths $Δz_{HI}=21.7$ and $Δz_{OVI}=14.5$. Our semi-automated line-finding and measurement technique renders the catalog as objectively-defined as possible. The cumu…
We present a new method for probing the physical conditions and metal enrichment of the Intergalactic Medium: the composite spectrum of Ly-alpha forest absorbers. We apply this technique to a sample of 9480 Ly-alpha absorbers with redshift 2 < z < 3.5 identified in the spectra of 13,279 high-redshift quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Fifth Data Release (DR5). Absorbers are selected as local minima in the spectra with 2.4 < tau_Ly-alpha < 4.0; at SDSS resolution (~ 150km/s FWHM), these absorbers are blends of systems that are individually weaker. In the stacked spectra we detect …
