This paper focuses on the optimal control of weak (i.e. in general non smooth) solutions to the continuity equation with non local flow. Our driving examples are a supply chain model and an equation for the description of pedestrian flows. To this aim, we prove the well posedness of a class of equations comprising these models. In particular, we prove the differentiability of solutions with respect to the initial datum and characterize its derivative. A necessary condition for the optimality of suitable integral functionals then follows.
We use Wasserstein metrics adapted to study the action of the flow of the BBM equation on probability measures. We prove the continuity of this flow and the stability of invariant measures for finite times.
We prove continuity of certain cost functions arising from optimal control of affine control systems. We give sharp sufficient conditions for this continuity. As an application, we prove a version of weak KAM theorem and consider the Aubry-Mather problems corresponding to these systems.
In this paper, we prove existence and uniqueness of measure solutions for the Cauchy problem associated to the (vectorial) continuity equation with a non-local flow. We also give a stability result with respect to various parameters.
We show the continuity of the flow map for quasilinear symmetric hyperbolic systems with general right--hand sides in different functional setting, including weighted Sobolev spaces $H_{s,δ}$. An essential tool to achieve the continuity of the flow map is a low regularity energy estimate. We then apply these results to the Euler--Poisson system which describes various systems of physical interests.
We investigate the creation and properties of eventual vacuum regions in the weak solutions of the continuity equation, in general, and in the weak solutions of compressible Navier--Stokes equations, in particular. The main results are based on the analysis of renormalized solutions to the continuity and pure transport equations and their inter-relations which are of independent interest.
In this paper, we prove the continuity of the flow of KdV on spaces of probability measures with respect to a combination of Wasserstein distances on $H^s$, $s>0$ and $L^2$. We are motivated by the existence of an invariant measure belonging to the spaces onto which these distances are defined.
We investigate uniqueness issues for a continuity equation arising out of the simplest model for plasticity, Hencky plasticity. The associated system is of the form $\rm{ curl\;}(μσ)=0$ where $μ$ is a nonnegative measure and $σ$ a two-dimensional divergence free unit vector field. After establishing the Sobolev regularity of that field, we provide a precise description of all possible geometries of the characteristic flow, as well as of the associated solutions.
We study the controllability of a Partial Differential Equation of transport type, that arises in crowd models. We are interested in controlling it with a control being a vector field, representing a perturbation of the velocity, localized on a fixed control set. We prove that, for each initial and final configuration, one can steer approximately one to another with Lipschitz controls when the uncontrolled dynamics allows to cross the control set. We also show that the exact controllability only holds for controls with less regularity, for which one may lose uniqueness of the associated soluti…
In this paper we show that the floow map of the Benjamin-Ono equation on the line is weakly continuous in L2(R), using "local smoothing" estimates. L2(R) is believed to be a borderline space for the local well-posedness theory of this equation. In the periodic case, Molinet [27] has recently proved that the flow map of the Benjamin-Ono equation is not weakly continuous in L2(T). Our results are in line with previous work on the cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation, where Goubet and Molinet [11] showed weak continuity in L2(R) and Molinet [28] showed lack of weak continuity in L2(T).
We prove that the flow map associated to a model equation for surface waves of moderate amplitude in shallow water is not uniformly continuous in the Sobolev space $H^s$ with $s>3/2$. The main idea is to consider two suitable sequences of smooth initial data whose difference converges to zero in $H^s$, but such that neither of them is convergent. Our main theorem shows that the exact solutions corresponding to these sequences of data are uniformly bounded in $H^s$ on a uniform existence interval, but the difference of the two solution sequences is bounded away from zero in $H^s$ at any positiv…
We deal with the uniqueness of distributional solutions to the continuity equation with a Sobolev vector field and with the property of being a Lagrangian solution, that means transported by a flow of the associated ordinary differential equation. We work in a framework with lack of local integrability of the solution, in which the classical DiPerna-Lions theory of uniqueness and Lagrangianity of distributional solutions does not apply due to the insufficient integrability of the commutator. We introduce a general principle to prove that a solution is Lagrangian: we rely on a disintegration al…
We present a divergence free vector field in the Sobolev space $H^1$ such that the flow associated to the field does not belong to any Sobolev space. The vector field is deterministic but constructed as the realization of a random field combining simple elements. This construction illustrates the optimality of recent quantitative regularity estimates as it gives a straightforward example of a well-posed flow which has nevertheless only very weak regularity.
We establish, in a rather general setting, an analogue of DiPerna-Lions theory on well-posedness of flows of ODE's associated to Sobolev vector fields. Key results are a well-posedness result for the continuity equation associated to suitably defined Sobolev vector fields, via a commutator estimate, and an abstract superposition principle in (possibly extended) metric measure spaces, via an embedding into $\mathbb{R}^\infty$. When specialized to the setting of Euclidean or infinite dimensional (e.g. Gaussian) spaces, large parts of previously known results are recovered at once. Moreover, the …
In this paper, we investigate the moduli of continuity for viscosity solutions of a wide class of nonsingular quasilinear evolution equations and also for the level set mean curvature flow, which is an example of singular degenerate equations. We prove that the modulus of continuity is a viscosity subsolution of some one dimensional equation. This work extends B. Andrews' recent result on moduli of continuity for smooth spatially periodic solutions.
This paper is concerned with non-stationary flows of sheart-hinning fluids in a bounded two-dimensional C^{2;1} domain. Assuming perfect slip boundary conditions, we provide a proof of the existence of a solution with the Hölder continuous velocity gradients and pressure under condition that a stress tensor satisfies power-law with growth p\in[5/3; 2].
This review paper is concerned with the stability analysis of the continuity equation in the DiPerna--Lions setting in which the advecting velocity field is Sobolev regular. Quantitative estimates for the equation were derived only recently (Seis 2016), but optimality was not discussed. In this paper, we revisit the results from (Seis 2016), compare the new estimates with previously known estimates for Lagrangian flows, e.g.\ (Crippa & De Lellis 2008), and finally demonstrate how those can be applied to produce optimal bounds in applications from physics, engineering or numerics.
For smooth vector fields the classical method of characteristics provides a link between the ordinary differential equation and the corresponding continuity equation (or transport equation). We study an analog of this connection for merely bounded Borel vector fields. In particular we show that, given a non-negative Borel measure $\bar μ$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$, existence of $\bar μ$-measurable flow of a bounded Borel vector field is equivalent to existence of a measure-valued solution to the corresponding continuity equation with the initial data $\bar μ$.
This paper is devoted to existence and uniqueness results for classes of nonlinear diffusion equations (or systems) which may be viewed as regular perturbations of Wasserstein gradient flows. First, in the case. where the drift is a gradient (in the physical space), we obtain existence by a semi-implicit Jordan-Kinderlehrer-Otto scheme. Then, in the nonpotential case, we derive existence from a regularization procedure and parabolic energy estimates. We also address the uniqueness issue by a displacement convexity argument.
We prove global-in-time existence and uniqueness of measure solutions of a nonlocal interaction system of two species in one spatial dimension. For initial data including atomic parts we provide a notion of gradient-flow solutions in terms of the pseudo-inverses of the corresponding cumulative distribution functions, for which the system can be stated as a gradient flow on the Hilbert space $L^2(0,1)^2$ according to the classical theory by Brézis. For absolutely continuous initial data we construct solutions using a minimising movement scheme in the set of probability measures. In addition we …
We consider the stochastic continuity equation associated to an Itô diffusion with irregular drift and diffusion coefficients. We give regularity conditions under which weak solutions are renormalized in the sense of DiPerna/Lions, and prove well-posedness in $L^p$. As an application, we give a new proof of renormalizability (hence uniqueness) of weak solutions to the stochastic continuity equation when the diffusion matrix is constant and the drift only belongs to $L^q_tL^p$, where $\frac{2}{q} + \frac{n}{p} <1$, without resorting to the regularity of the stochastic flow or a duality method.
We analyze the dynamics of the flow generated by a nonlinear parabolic problem when some reaction and potential terms are concentrated in a neighborhood of the boundary. We assume that this neighborhood shrinks to the boundary as a parameter εgoes to zero. Also, we suppose that the "inner boundary" of this neighborhood presents a highly oscillatory behavior. Our main goal here is to show the continuity of the family of attractors with respect to ε. Indeed, we prove upper semicontinuity under the usual properties of regularity and dissipativeness and, assuming hyperbolicity of the equilibria, w…
We establish the renormalization property for essentially bounded solutions of the continuity equation associated to $BV$ fields in Wiener spaces, with values in the associated Cameron-Martin space; thus obtaining, by standard arguments, new uniqueness and stability results for correspondent Lagrangian $L^\infty$-flows. An example related to Neumann elliptic problems is also discussed.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the continuity equation in space dimension ${d \geq 2}$. We construct a divergence-free velocity field uniformly bounded in all Sobolev spaces $W^{1,p}$, for $1 \leq p<\infty$, and a smooth compactly supported initial datum such that the unique solution to the continuity equation with this initial datum and advecting field does not belong to any Sobolev space of positive fractional order at any positive time. We also construct velocity fields in $W^{r,p}$, with $r>1$, and solutions of the continuity equation with these velocities that exhibit some loss of reg…
We prove a Lipschitz extension lemma in which the extension procedure simultaneously preserves the Lipschitz continuity for two non-equivalent distances. The two distances under consideration are the Euclidean distance and, roughly speaking, the geodesic distance along integral curves of a (possibly multi-valued) flow of a continuous vector field. The Lipschitz constant for the geodesic distance of the extension can be estimated in terms of the Lipschitz constant for the geodesic distance of the original function. This Lipschitz extension lemma allows us to remove the high integrability assump…
We consider the Cauchy problem for the continuity equation with a bounded nearly incompressible vector field $b\colon (0,T) \times \mathbb R^d \to \mathbb R^d$, $T>0$. This class of vector fields arises in the context of hyperbolic conservation laws (in particular, the Keyfitz-Kranzer system). It is well known that in the generic multi-dimensional case ($d\ge 1$) near incompressibility is sufficient for existence of bounded weak solutions, but uniqueness may fail (even when the vector field is divergence-free), and hence further assumptions on the regularity of $b$ (e.g. Sobolev regularity) ar…
In this paper we consider the Allen-Cahn equation perturbed by a stochastic flux term and prove a large deviation principle. Using an associated stochastic flow of diffeomorphisms the equation can be transformed to a parabolic partial differential equation with random coefficients. We use this structure and first provide a large deviation principle for stochastic flows in function spaces with Hölder-continuity in time. Second, we use a continuity argument and deduce a large deviation principle for the stochastic Allen-Cahn equation.
We present several examples of fundamental problems involving weak continuity and compactness for nonlinear partial differential equations, in which compensated compactness and related ideas have played a significant role. We first focus on the compactness and convergence of vanishing viscosity solutions for nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws, including the inviscid limit from the Navier-Stokes equations to the Euler equations for homentropy flow, the vanishing viscosity method to construct the global spherically symmetric solutions to the multidimensional compressible Euler equations, and…
We deal with general quasilinear divergence-form coercive operators whose prototype is the $m$-Laplacean operator. The nonlinear terms are given by Carathéodory functions and satisfy controlled growth structure conditions with data belonging to suitable Morrey spaces. The fairly non-regular boundary of the underlying domain is supposed to satisfy a capacity density condition which allows domains with exterior corkscrew property. We prove global boundedness and Hoelder continuity up to the boundary for the weak solutions of such equations, generalizing this way the classical $L^p$-result of Lad…

We address the persistence of Hölder continuity for weak solutions of the linear drift-diffusion equation with nonlocal pressure \[ u_t + b \cdot \grad u - \lap u = \grad p,\qquad \grad\cdot u =0 \] on $[0,\infty) \times \R^{n}$, with $n \geq 2$. The drift velocity $b$ is assumed to be at the critical regularity level, with respect to the natural scaling of the equations. The proof draws on Campanato's characterization of Hölder spaces, and uses a maximum-principle-type argument by which we control the growth in time of certain local averages of $u$. We provide an estimate that does not depend…
We provide a thorough study of stability of the 1-D continuity equation, which models many physical conservation laws. In our system-theoretic perspective, the velocity is considered to be an input. An additional input appears in the boundary condition (boundary disturbance). Stability estimates are provided in all Lp state norms with p>1, as well as in the sup norm. However, in our Input-to-State Stability estimates, the gain and overshoot coefficients depend on the velocity. Moreover, the logarithmic norm of the state appears instead of the usual norm. The obtained results can be used in the…
We prove quantitative estimates on flows of ordinary differential equations with vector field with gradient given by a singular integral of an $L^1$ function. Such estimates allow to prove existence, uniqueness, quantitative stability and compactness for the flow, going beyond the $BV$ theory. We illustrate the related well-posedness theory of Lagrangian solutions to the continuity and transport equations.
We consider pointwise linear elliptic equations of the form $\mathrm{L}_x u_x = η_x$ on a smooth compact manifold where the operators $\mathrm{L}_x$ are in divergence form with real, bounded, measurable coefficients that vary in the space variable $x$. We establish $\mathrm{L}^{2}$-continuity of the solutions at $x$ whenever the coefficients of $\mathrm{L}_x$ are $\mathrm{L}^{\infty}$-continuous at $x$ and the initial datum is $\mathrm{L}^{2}$-continuous at $x$. This is obtained by reducing the continuity of solutions to a homogeneous Kato square root problem. As an application, we consider a …
In Part I, we construct a class of examples of initial velocities for which the unique solution to the Euler equations in the plane has an associated flow map that lies in no Holder space of positive exponent for any positive time. In Part II, we explore inverse problems that arise in attempting to construct an example of an initial velocity producing an arbitrarily poor modulus of continuity of the flow map.
