The first passage time problem for Brownian motions hitting a barrier has been extensively studied in the literature. In particular, many incarnations of integral equations which link the density of the hitting time to the equation for the barrier itself have appeared. Most interestingly, Peskir(2002b) demonstrates that a master integral equation can be used to generate a countable number of new equations via differentiation or integration by parts. In this article, we generalize Peskir's results and provide a more powerful unifying framework for generating integral equations through a new class of martingales. We obtain a continuum of Volterra type integral equations of the first kind and prove uniqueness for a subclass. Furthermore, through the integral equations, we demonstrate how certain functional transforms of the boundary affect the density function. Finally, we demonstrate a fundamental connection between the Volterra integral equations and a class of Fredholm integral equations.
By using the law of the excursions of Brownian motion with drift, we find the distribution of the $n-$th passage time of Brownian motion through a straight line $S(t)= a + bt.$ In the special case when $b = 0,$ we extend the result to a space-time transformation of Brownian motion.
Nearly fifty years after the introduction of skew Brownian motion by Itô and McKean (1963), the first passage time distribution remains unknown. In this paper, we generalize results of Pitman and Yor (2001) and Csáki and Hu (2004) to derive formulae for the distribution of ranked excursion heights of skew Brownian motion. We then derive the first passage time distribution as a simple corollary.
A regime-switching geometric Brownian motion is used to model a geometric Brownian motion with its coefficients changing randomly according to a Markov chain. In this work, we give a complete characterization of the recurrent property of this process. The long time behavior of this process such as its $p$-th moment is also studied. Moreover, the quantitative properties of the regime-switching geometric Brownian motion with two-state switching are investigated to show the difference between geometric Brownian motion with switching and without switching. At last, some estimates of its first pass…
The first-passage-time problem for a Brownian motion with alternating infinitesimal moments through a constant boundary is considered under the assumption that the time intervals between consecutive changes of these moments are described by an alternating renewal process. Bounds to the first-passage-time density and distribution function are obtained, and a simulation procedure to estimate first-passage-time densities is constructed. Examples of applications to problems in environmental sciences and mathematical finance are also provided.
For drifted Brownian motion $X(t)= x - μt + B_t \ (μ>0)$ starting from $x>0,$ we study the joint distribution of the first-passage time below zero, $τ(x),$ and the first-passage area, $A(x),$ swept out by $X$ till the time $τ(x).$ In particular, we establish differential equations with boundary conditions for the joint moments $E[τ(x)^m A(x)^n],$ and we present an algorithm to find recursively them, for any $m$ and $n.$ Finally, the expected value of the time average of $X$ till the time $τ(x)$ is obtained.
In this paper we consider a (reflected) Brownian motion with broken drift hitting a random boundary. Some dedicated calculations allow us to obtain the formula on the joint Laplace transform of the hitting time and hitting position. These develop the research on first rendezvous times of (reflected) Brownian motion and compound Poisson-type processes by Perry et al. (2004).
Under some weak conditions, the first-passage time of the Brownian motion to a continuous curved boundary is an almost surely finite stopping time. Its probability density function (pdf) is explicitly known only in few particular cases. Several mathematical studies proposed to approximate the pdf in a quite general framework or even to simulate this hitting time using a discrete time approximation of the Brownian motion. The authors study a new algorithm which permits to simulate the first-passage time using an iterating procedure. The convergence rate presented in this paper suggests that the…
This paper proves an equality in law between the invariant measure of a reflected system of Brownian motions and a vector of point-to-line last passage percolation times in a discrete random environment. A consequence describes the distribution of the all-time supremum of Dyson Brownian motion with drift. A finite temperature version relates the point-to-line partition functions of two directed polymers, with an inverse-gamma and a Brownian environment, and generalises Dufresne's identity. Our proof introduces an interacting system of Brownian motions with an invariant measure given by a field…
We study an inverse first-passage-time problem for Wiener process $X(t)$ subject to hold and jump from a boundary $c.$ Let be given a threshold $S>X(0) \ge c,$ and a distribution function $F$ on $[0, + \infty ).$ The problem consists in finding the distribution of the holding time at $c$ and the distribution of jumps from $c,$ so that the first-passage time of $X(t)$ through $S$ has distribution $F.$
Let X_t be a subordinate Brownian motion, and suppose that the Levy measure of the underlying subordinator has completely monotone density. Under very mild conditions, we find integral formulae for the tail distribution P(τ_x > t) of first passage times τ_x through a barrier at x > 0, and its derivatives in t. As a corollary, we examine the asymptotic behaviour of P(τ_x > t) and its t-derivatives, either as t goes to infinity or x goes to 0.
We show that exact sampling of the first passage event can be done for a Levy process with unbounded variation, if the process can be embedded in a subordinated standard Brownian motion. By sampling a series of first exit events of the Brownian motion and first passage events of the subordinator, the first passage event of interest can be obtained. The sampling of the first exit time and pre-exit location of the Brownian motion may be of independent interest.
This paper considers the class of Lévy processes that can be written as a Brownian motion time changed by an independent Lévy subordinator. Examples in this class include the variance gamma model, the normal inverse Gaussian model, and other processes popular in financial modeling. The question addressed is the precise relation between the standard first passage time and an alternative notion, which we call first passage of the second kind, as suggested by Hurd (2007) and others. We are able to prove that standard first passage time is the almost sure limit of iterations of first passage of th…
We study some limit theorems for the normalized law of integrated Brownian motion perturbed by several examples of functionals: the first passage time, the nth passage time, the last passage time up to a finite horizon and the supremum. We show that the penalization principle holds in all these cases and give descriptions of the conditioned processes. In particular, it is remarkable that the penalization by the nth passage time is independent of n, and always gives the same conditioned process, i.e. integrated Brownian motion conditioned not to hit 0. Our results rely on some explicit formulae…
In [4], it is proved that we can have a continuous first-passage-time density function of one dimensional standard Brownian motion when the boundary is Hölder continuous with exponent greater than 1/2. For the purpose of extending [4] into multidimensional domains, we show that there exists a continuous first-passage-time density function of standard $d$-dimensional Brownian motion in moving boundaries in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, $d\geq 2$, under a $C^{3}$-diffeomorphism. Similarly as in [4], by using a property of local time of standard $d$-dimensional Brownian motion and the heat equation with Diri…
It is considered the integrated process $X(t)= x + \int _0^t Y(s) ds ,$ where $Y(t)$ is a Gauss-Markov process starting from $y.$ The first-passage time (FPT) of $X$ through a constant boundary and the first-exit time of $X$ from an interval $(a,b)$ are investigated, generalizing some results on FPT of integrated Brownian motion. An essential role is played by a useful representation of $X,$ in terms of Brownian motion which allows to reduces the FPT of $X$ to that of a time-changed Brownian motion. Some explicit examples are reported; when theoretical calculation is not available, the quantit…
We present a representation theorem for a filtering model with first-passage-type stopping time. The model is constructed from two unobservable processes and one observable process that is under the influence of two unobservable processes.A filter is constructed using Brownian motion in the observable process and a first-passage-type stopping time in an unobservable process.Though our theorems are similar to those of Nakagawa\cite{Nakagawa}, we do not use pinned Brownian motion measure, which is difficult to deal with. In addition, we describe a representation theorem for another filtration th…
In this article we study a problem related to the first passage and inverse first passage time problems for Brownian motions originally formulated by Jackson, Kreinin and Zhang (2009). Specifically, define $τ_X = \inf\{t>0:W_t + X \le b(t) \}$ where $W_t$ is a standard Brownian motion, then given a boundary function $b:[0,\infty) \to \RR$ and a target measure $μ$ on $[0,\infty)$, we seek the random variable $X$ such that the law of $τ_X$ is given by $μ$. We characterize the solutions, prove uniqueness and existence and provide several key examples associated with the linear boundary.
An exact expression for the distribution of the area swept out by a drifted Brownian motion till its first-passage time is derived. A study of the asymptotic behaviour confirms earlier conjectures and clarifies their range of validity. The analysis also leads to a simple closed-form solution for the moments of the Airy distribution.
We prove the existence of semi-infinite geodesics for Brownian last-passage percolation (BLPP). Specifically, on a single event of probability one, there exist semi-infinite geodesics started from every space-time point and traveling in every asymptotic direction. Properties of these geodesics include uniqueness for a fixed initial point and direction, non-uniqueness for fixed direction but random initial points, and coalescence of all geodesics traveling in a common, fixed direction. Along the way, we prove that for fixed northeast and southwest directions, there almost surely exist no bi-inf…
We survey recent results on first-passage processes in unbounded cones and their applications to ordering of particles undergoing Brownian motion in one dimension. We first discuss the survival probability S(t) that a diffusing particle, in arbitrary spatial dimension, remains inside a conical domain up to time t. In general, this quantity decays algebraically S ~ t^{-beta} in the long-time limit. The exponent beta depends on the opening angle of the cone and the spatial dimension, and it is root of a transcendental equation involving the associated Legendre functions. The exponent becomes a f…
We show in detail some results, outlined in a previous paper regarding the case of Brownian motion (BM), about the distribution of the $n$th-passage time of a one-dimensional diffusion obtained by a space or time transformation of BM, through a constant barrier $a.$ Some explicit examples are reported.
The Airy line ensemble is a positive-integer indexed system of random continuous curves whose finite dimensional distributions are given by the multi-line Airy process. It is a natural object in the KPZ universality class: for example, its highest curve, the Airy$_2$ process, describes after the subtraction of a parabola the limiting law of the scaled energy of a geodesic running from the origin to a variable point on an anti-diagonal line in such problems as Poissonian last passage percolation. The ensemble of curves resulting from the Airy line ensemble after the subtraction of the same para…
In this paper we prove a duality relation between coalescence times and exit points in last-passage percolation models with exponential weights. As a consequence, we get lower bounds for coalescence times with scaling exponent 3/2, and we relate its distribution with variational problems involving the Brownian motion process and the Airy process.
We consider random walks with independent but not necessarily identical distributed increments. Assuming that the increments satisfy the well-known Lindeberg condition, we investigate the asymptotic behaviour of first-passage times over moving boundaries. Furthermore, we prove that a properly rescaled random walk conditioned to stay above the boundary up to time $n$ converges, as $n\to\infty$, towards the Brownian meander.
Given a survival distribution on the positive half-axis and a Brownian motion, a solution of the inverse first-passage problem consists of a boundary so that the first passage time over the boundary has the given distribution. We show that the solution of the inverse first- passage problem coincides with the solution of a related optimal stopping problem. Consequently, methods from optimal stopping theory may be applied in the study of the inverse first-passage problem. We illustrate this with a study of the associated integral equation for the boundary.
The density distribution function of the integral of the exponential Brownian motion is determined explicitly in the form of a rapidly convergent series.
The classical inverse first passage time problem asks whether, for a Brownian motion $(B_t)_{t\geq 0}$ and a positive random variable $ξ$, there exists a barrier $b:\mathbb{R}_+\to\mathbb{R}$ such that $\mathbb{P}\{B_s>b(s), 0\leq s \leq t\}=\mathbb{P}\{ξ>t\}$, for all $t\geq 0$. We study a variant of the inverse first passage time problem for killed Brownian motion. We show that if $λ>0$ is a killing rate parameter and $\mathbb{1}_{(-\infty,0]}$ is the indicator of the set $(-\infty,0]$ then, under certain compatibility assumptions, there exists a unique continuous function $b:\mathbb{R}_+\to…
In this paper, we combine Hida distribution theory and Sobolev-Watanabe-Kree spaces in order to study finely the link between forward integrals obtained by regularization and Wick-Itô integrals with respect to fractional Brownian motion and the Rosenblatt process. The new methodology developed in this paper allows to retrieve results for fractional Brownian motion and to obtain new results regarding the Rosenblatt process. In particular, an Itô formula for functionals of the Rosenblatt process is obtained which holds in the space of square-integrable random variables.
We prove change of variables formulas [Itô formulas] for functions of both arithmetic and geometric averages of geometric fractional Brownian motion. They are valid for all convex functions, not only for smooth ones. These change of variables formulas provide us integral representations of functions of average in the sense of generalized Lebesgue-Stieltjes integral.
Consider the restriction of the directed landscape $\mathcal L(x, s; y, t)$ to a set of the form $\{x_1, \dots, x_k\} \times \{s_0\} \times \mathbb R \times \{t_0\}$. We show that on any such set, the directed landscape is given by a last passage problem across $k$ locally Brownian functions. The $k$ functions in this last passage isometry are built from certain marginals of the extended directed landscape. As applications of this construction, we show that the Airy difference profile is locally absolutely continuous with respect to Brownian local time, that the KPZ fixed point started from tw…
In last passage percolation models lying in the KPZ universality class, the energy of long energy-maximizing paths may be studied as a function of the paths' pair of endpoint locations. Scaled coordinates may be introduced, so that these maximizing paths, or polymers, now cross unit distances with unit-order fluctuations, and have scaled energy, or weight, of unit order. In this article, we consider Brownian last passage percolation in these scaled coordinates. In the narrow wedge case, when one endpoint of such polymers is fixed, say at $(0,0) \in \mathbb{R}^2$, and the other is varied horizo…
We calculate analytically the probability density $P(t_m)$ of the time $t_m$ at which a continuous-time Brownian motion (with and without drift) attains its maximum before passing through the origin for the first time. We also compute the joint probability density $P(M,t_m)$ of the maximum $M$ and $t_m$. In the driftless case, we find that $P(t_m)$ has power-law tails: $P(t_m)\sim t_m^{-3/2}$ for large $t_m$ and $P(t_m)\sim t_m^{-1/2}$ for small $t_m$. In presence of a drift towards the origin, $P(t_m)$ decays exponentially for large $t_m$. The results from numerical simulations are in excelle…
We show that if a random variable is a final value of an adapted Holder continuous process, then it can be represented as a stochastic integral with respect to fractional Brownian motion, and the integrand is an adapted process, continuous up to the final point.
We consider directed last passage percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with exponential passage times on the vertices. A topic of great interest is the coupling structure of the weights of geodesics as the endpoints are varied spatially and temporally. A particular specialization is when one considers geodesics to points varying in the time direction starting from a given initial data. This paper considers the flat initial condition which corresponds to line-to-point last passage times. Settling a conjecture by Ferrari and Spohn (SIGMA, 2016), we show that for the passage times from the line $x+y=0$ …
Let (Xt, t >= 0) be a diffusion process with jumps, sum of a Brownian motion with drift and a compound Poisson process. We consider T_x the first hitting time of a fixed level x > 0 by (Xt, t >= 0). We prove that the law of T_x has a density (defective when E(X1) < 0) with respect to the Lebesgue measure.
In this paper we study the integral of the supremum process of standard Brownian motion. We present an explicit formula for the moments of the integral (or area) A(T), covered by the process in the time interval [0,T]. The Laplace transform of A(T) follows as a consequence. The main proof involves a double Laplace transform of A(T) and is based on excursion theory and local time for Brownian motion.
We derive general sufficient conditions for the existence of Riemann-Stieltjes integrals $\int_a^b Yd X$. Our results extend the classical conditions of L.C.Young and improve some recent results that deal with integrals involving a fractional Brownian motion with the Hurst index $H>1/2$.
We find an explicit expression for the cross-covariance between stochastic integral processes with respect to a $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion (fBm) $B_t$ with Hurst parameter $H>1/2$, where the integrands are vector fields applied to $B_t$. It provides, for example, a direct alternative proof of Y. Hu and D. Nualart's result that the stochastic integral component in the fractional Bessel process decomposition is not itself a fractional Brownian motion.

We consider a wide class of increasing Lévy processes perturbed by an independent Brownian motion as a degradation model. Such family contains almost all classical degradation models considered in the literature. Classically failure time associated to such model is defined as the hitting time or the first-passage time of a fixed level. Since sample paths are not in general increasing, we consider also the last-passage time as the failure time following a recent work by Barker and Newby. We address here the problem of determining the distribution of the first-passage time and of the last-passag…
In this paper, we study the existence and uniqueness of solutions to stochastic differential equations driven by G-Brownian motion (GSDEs) with integral-Lipschitz conditions on their coefficients.
In last passage percolation models lying in the KPZ universality class, long maximizing paths have a typical deviation from the linear interpolation of their endpoints governed by the two-thirds power of the interpolating distance. This two-thirds power dictates a choice of scaled coordinates, in which these maximizers, now called polymers, cross unit distances with unit-order fluctuations. In this article, we consider Brownian last passage percolation in these scaled coordinates, and prove that the probability of the presence of $k$ disjoint polymers crossing a unit-order region while beginni…
Wiener integral for the coordinate process is defined under the $ σ$-finite measure unifying Brownian penalisations, which has been introduced by Najnudel, Roynette and Yor. Its decomposition before and after last exit time from 0 is studied. This study prepares for the author's recent study of Cameron--Martin formula for the $ σ$-finite measure.
We consider large-scale point fields which naturally appear in the context of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) phenomenon. Such point fields are geometrical objects formed by points of mass concentration, and by shocks separating the sources of these points. We introduce similarly defined point fields for processes of coalescing fractional Brownian motions (cfBm). The case of the Hurst index 2/3 is of particular interest for us since, in this case, the power law of the density decay is the same as that in the KPZ phenomenon. In this paper, we present strong numerical evidence that statistical pro…
The aim of this paper is to study the law of the last passage time of a linear diffusion to a curved boundary. We start by giving a general expression for the density of such a random variable under some regularity assumptions. Following Robbins & Siegmund, we then show that this expression may be computed for some implicit boundaries via a martingale method. Finally, we discuss some links between first hitting times and last passage times via time inversion, and present an integral equation (which we solve in some particular cases) satisfied by the density of the last passage time. Many examp…
The objective of this paper is to derive a representation of symmetric G-martingales as stochastic integrals with respect to the G-Brownian motion. For this end, we first study some extensions of stochastic calculus with respect to G-martingales under the sublinear expectation spaces.
Consider a sequence of n bi-infinite and stationary Brownian queues in tandem. Assume that the arrival process entering in the first queue is a zero mean ergodic process. We prove that the departure process from the n-th queue converges in distribution to a Brownian motion as n goes to infinity. In particular this implies that the Brownian motion is an attractive invariant measure for the Brownian queueing operator. Our proof exploits the relationship between the Brownian queues in tandem and the last-passage Brownian percolation model, developing a coupling technique in the second setting. Th…
