The Casas-Ibarra parametrization is a description of the Dirac neutrino mass matrix M_D in terms of the neutrino mixing matrix V, an orthogonal matrix O and the diagonal mass matrices of light and heavy Majorana neutrinos in the type-I seesaw mechanism. Because M^\dagger_D M_D is apparently independent of V but dependent on O in this parametrization, a number of authors have taken it for grant that unflavored leptogenesis has nothing to do with CP violation at low energies. Here we question this observation by clarifying the physical meaning of O. We establish a clear relationship between O and the observable quantities, and find that O does depend on V. Our general conclusion is that both unflavored leptogenesis and flavored leptogenesis have no direct connection with low-energy CP violation.

In the type-I seesaw mechanism the Casas-Ibarra (CI) parametrization provides a convenient description of the Dirac neutrino mass matrix in terms of the light and heavy Majorana neutrino masses, the lepton flavor mixing matrix $U$ and an unknown complex orthogonal matrix $O$. If $O$ is assumed to be real, it will be impossible to generate {\it unflavored} thermal leptogenesis via the lepton-number-violating and CP-violating decays of the lightest heavy Majorana neutrino. We find that this observation can be invalidated after small but unavoidable quantum corrections to the CI parametrization a…
We study leptonic CP and flavor violations in supersymmetric (SUSY) grand unified theory (GUT) with right handed neutrinos, paying attention to the renormalization group effects on the slepton mass matrices due to the neutrino and GUT Yukawa interactions. In particular, we study in detail the impacts of the so-called Casas- Ibarra parameters on CP and flavor violating observables. The renormalization group effects induce CP and flavor violating elements of the SUSY breaking scalar mass squared matrices, which may result in sizable leptonic CP and flavor violating signals. Assuming seesaw formu…
In the type I + II seesaw formula the mass matrix of light neutrinos m_nu receives contributions from the exchanges of both heavy Majorana neutrinos and SU(2)_L-triplet Higgs bosons. We propose a new parameterization for the Dirac-type Yukawa coupling matrix of neutrinos in this case, which generalizes the well known Casas-Ibarra parameterization to type I + II seesaw and is useful when the triplet term in m_nu is known. Neutrino masses and mixing, lepton flavor violation in decays like mu -> e γwithin mSUGRA models and leptogenesis can then be studied within this framework. We illustrate the …
We perform a detailed analysis of the one-loop corrections to the light neutrino mass matrix within low scale type I seesaw extensions of the Standard Model and their implications in experimental searches for neutrinoless double beta decay. We show that a sizable contribution to the effective Majorana neutrino mass from the exchange of heavy Majorana neutrinos is always possible, provided one requires a fine-tuned cancellation between the tree-level and one-loop contribution to the light neutrino masses. We quantify the level of fine-tuning as a function of the seesaw parameters and introduce …
We emphasize that the vanishing of the CP asymmetry in leptogenesis, previously observed for models with tri-bimaximal mixing and family symmetry, may be traced to a property of the type I see-saw mechanism satisfied by such models known as Form Dominance, corresponding to the case of a diagonal Casas-Ibarra R-matrix. Form Dominance leads to vanishing flavour-dependent CP asymmetries irrespective of whether one has tri-bimaximal mixing or a family symmetry. Successful leptogenesis requires violation of Form Dominance, but not necessarily violation of tri bimaximal mixing. This may be achieved …
We studied models of leptogenesis where three right-handed Majorana neutrinos are involved and the minimal-extended seesaw mechanism including an additional singlet field produces four light neutrinos. This study shows that the type of mass ordering and heavy Majorana scales can be determined by inputting the simplest orthogonal matrix into the Casas-Ibarra(CI) representation of seesaw. The CP asymmetry produced from the decays of heavy neutrinos and the dilution mass are predicted in terms of the mass and mixing elements of the fourth neutrino. Upon the choice of CI matrix, the existence of a…
We propose a realisation of inverse seesaw model controlled by hidden $U(1)$ gauge symmetry, and discuss the impact of a bosonic dark matter (DM) candidate by imposing a $Z_2$ parity. We present the detail of scalar spectra and apply the Casas-Ibarra parametrisation to fit the neutrino oscillation data. For this model, the allowed region is extracted to explain the observed relic density and the muon $g-2$ discrepancy, satisfying flavor constraints with DM involved. We interpret the DM annihilation into $\bar f f $ including all SM charged fermions and investigate the direct detection to place…
We consider seesaw type-I models including at least one (mostly-)sterile neutrino with mass at the eV scale. Three distinct situations are found, where the presence of light extra neutrinos is naturally justified by an approximately conserved lepton number symmetry. To analyse these scenarios consistently, it is crucial to employ an exact parametrisation of the full mixing matrix. We provide additional exact results, including generalised versions of the seesaw relation and of the Casas-Ibarra parametrisation, valid for every scale of seesaw. We find that the existence of a light sterile neutr…
We have explored a minimal supersymmetric standard model scenario extended by one pair of gauge singlets per generation. In the model light neutrino masses and their mixings are generated via inverse seesaw mechanism. In such a scenario, a right-handed sneutrino can be the lightest supersymmetric particle and a cold Dark Matter (DM) candidate. If Casas-Ibarra parametrisation is imposed on the Dirac neutrino Yukawa coupling matrix ($Y_ν$) to fit the neutrino oscillation data, the resulting $Y_ν$ is highly constrained from the lepton flavor violating (LFV) decay constraints. The smallness of $Y_…
We discuss the parameter space reach of future experiments searching for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) at the GeV scale in terms of neutrino mass models with three HNL generations. We focus on two classes of models: Generic assumptions (such as random mass matrices or the Casas-Ibarra parameterization) and flavor symmetry-generated models. We demonstrate that the generic approaches lead to comparable parameter space predictions, which tend to be at least partially within the reach of future experiments. On the other hand, specific flavor symmetry models yield more refined predictions, some of t…
We have investigated the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model with three right-handed Majorana neutrinos whether there still is a parameter region which is consistent with all existing experimental data/limits such as Leptogenesis and the dark matter abundance and we also can solve the Lithium problem. Using Casas-Ibarra parameterization, we have found that a very narrow parameter space of the complex orthogonal matrix elements where the lightest slepton can have a long lifetime, that is necessary for solving the Lithium problem. Further, under this condition, there is a parameter…
This work addresses the viability of \textit {Dirac phase leptogenesis}, in a scenario where the light Majorana neutrinos acquire masses by the inverse seesaw (ISS) mechanism. We show that, a successful leptogenesis in the ISS, driven (only) by the Dirac CP phase can be achieved with the involvement of an unorthodox form of the rotational matrix $R = e^{i{\bf A}} \,\,\,(e^{\bf A})$ in the Casas-Ibarra parametrisation. This particular structure of $R$ turns out to be an artefact in explaining the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe in a pure ISS scenario. We detail here the confined regio…
Nonzero masses for the active neutrinos - regardless of their nature or origin - arise only after electroweak symmetry breaking. We discuss the parameterization of neutrino couplings to a Higgs sector consisting of one SU(2)_L scalar doublet and one SU(2)_L scalar triplet, and allow for right-handed neutrinos whose Majorana mass parameters arise from the vacuum expectation value of a Standard Model scalar singlet. If the neutrinos are Majorana fermions, all Yukawa couplings can be expressed as functions of the neutrino mass eigenvalues and a subset of the elements of the neutrino mixing matrix…
The type-III seesaw seems to explain the very minuteness of neutrino masses readily and naturally. The high-energy see-saw theories usually involve a larger number of effective parametres than the physical and measurable parametres appearing in the low-energy neutrino phenomenology. Casas-Ibarra parametrisation facilitates to encode the information lost in integrating the heavy fermions out in an arbitrary complex orthogonal matrix. The CMS collaboration has already searched for triplet fermions in the type-III seesaw model with only one generation of triplet fermion flavour democratically dec…

We propose an invariant see-saw (ISS) approach to model building, based on the observation that see-saw models of neutrino mass and mixing fall into basis invariant classes labelled by the Casas-Ibarra $R$-matrix, which we prove to be invariant not only under basis transformations but also non-unitary right-handed neutrino transformations $S$. According to the ISS approach, given any see-saw model in some particular basis one may determine the invariant $R$ matrix and hence the invariant class to which that model belongs. The formulation of see-saw models in terms of invariant classes puts the…
