In the type-I seesaw mechanism the Casas-Ibarra (CI) parametrization provides a convenient description of the Dirac neutrino mass matrix in terms of the light and heavy Majorana neutrino masses, the lepton flavor mixing matrix $U$ and an unknown complex orthogonal matrix $O$. If $O$ is assumed to be real, it will be impossible to generate {\it unflavored} thermal leptogenesis via the lepton-number-violating and CP-violating decays of the lightest heavy Majorana neutrino. We find that this observation can be invalidated after small but unavoidable quantum corrections to the CI parametrization are taken into account with the help of the one-loop renormalization-group equations (RGEs) between the seesaw and electroweak scales. We illustrate a novel and viable unflavored leptogenesis scenario of this kind based on the RGEs in the seesaw-extended standard model, and show its direct link to the CP-violating phases of $U$ at low energies.
The Casas-Ibarra parametrization is a description of the Dirac neutrino mass matrix M_D in terms of the neutrino mixing matrix V, an orthogonal matrix O and the diagonal mass matrices of light and heavy Majorana neutrinos in the type-I seesaw mechanism. Because M^\dagger_D M_D is apparently independent of V but dependent on O in this parametrization, a number of authors have taken it for grant that unflavored leptogenesis has nothing to do with CP violation at low energies. Here we question this observation by clarifying the physical meaning of O. We establish a clear relationship between O an…
We propose a model with $D_4$ flavor symmetry for leptogenesis in the framework of supersymmetric $SU(5)$ grand unified theory. Neutrino masses arise from the type I seesaw mechanism where the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the flavor symmetry leads to the well-known trimaximal mixing ($TM_2$). We find that this model predicts the normal hierarchy (NH) for neutrino masses. We also find that the predicted range of the effective neutrino mass $m_{ββ}$ can be tested at future neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. For the generation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe (BAU), we conside…
We consider a mirror world scenario, in which light Dirac neutrinos are generated from a seesaw mechanism and leptogenesis occurs at high scale without violating lepton number. After leptogenesis, the conservation laws of the theory imply the visible baryon-minus-lepton asymmetry to be equal to the mirror baryon-minus-lepton asymmetry. We extend previous work by presenting a detailed study of this Dirac leptogenesis mechanism by constructing the full set of Boltzmann Equations for both cases of unflavored and flavored regimes. We show that $Z_2$ breaking and lepton/mirror lepton flavor effects…
It is well-known that for unflavored leptogenesis there is in general no connection between low and high energy CP violation. We stress that for a non-unitary lepton mixing matrix this may not be the case. We give an illustrative example for this connection and show that the non-standard CP phases that are induced by non-unitarity can be responsible for observable effects in neutrino oscillation experiments as well as for the generation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. Lepton Flavor Violation in decays such as tau -> mu gamma can also be induced at an observable level. We also comment …
The discovery of lepton number violation (LNV) at the LHC would have profound consequences for the viability of high-scale leptogenesis models. As an example, we discuss the case of observing a signal with two same-sign leptons, two jets and no missing energy. This would imply a large washout factor for the lepton number density in the early Universe, which leads to a significant constraint on any high-scale model for the generation of the observed baryon asymmetry. In a standard leptogenesis scenario, the corresponding washout factor would strongly decrease a pre-existing lepton asymmetry and…
We perform a thermal unflavored leptogenesis analysis on minimal left-right symmetric models with discrete left-right symmetry identified as generalized parity or charge conjugation. When left-right symmetry is unbroken in the lepton Yukawa sector, the neutrino Dirac coupling matrix is completely determined by neutrino masses and mixing angles, allowing CP violation needed to generate leptogenesis totally resides in the low-energy sector. With two lepton asymmetry generation ways, both type I and mixed type I$+$II neutrino mass generation mechanisms are considered. After solving the Boltzmann …
We discuss the connection between observable CP violation in the lepton sector, the properties of heavy neutrinos and the baryon asymmetry of the universe in the minimal seesaw model. A measurement of the Dirac phase $δ$ would allow to make testable predictions for the couplings of the heavy neutrinos to individual Standard Model lepton flavours. If any heavy neutral leptons are experimentally discovered in the future, this provides a powerful test for the mechanism of neutrino mass generation and baryogenesis.
In order to address the baryon asymmetry in the Universe one needs to understand the origin of baryon (B) and lepton (L) number violation. In this article, we discuss the mechanism of baryogenesis via leptogenesis to explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry in theories with spontaneous breaking of baryon and lepton number. In this context, a lepton asymmetry is generated through the out-of-equilibrium decays of right-handed neutrinos at the high-scale, while local baryon number must be broken below the multi-TeV scale to satisfy the cosmological bounds on the dark matter relic density. We demon…
We present and discuss constraints on supersymmetric type I seesaw models imposed by neutrino data, charged lepton flavor violation and thermal leptogenesis.
How is CP violation of low energy related to CP violation required from baryon number asymmetry ? We give an example which shows a direct link between CP violation of neutrino oscillation and baryogenesis through leptogenesis.
We study the implications of a successful leptogenesis within the framework of Minimal Lepton Flavour Violation combined with radiative resonant leptogenesis and the PMNS matrix being the only source of CP violation, which can be obtained provided flavour effects are taken into account. We find that the right amount of the baryon asymmetry of the universe can be generated under the conditions of a normal hierarchy of the light neutrino masses, a non-vanishing Majorana phase, sin(theta_{13})>0.13 and m_{nu,lightest}<0.04 eV. If this is fulfilled, we find strong correlations among ratios of char…
We propose a special type-I seesaw scenario in which the Yukawa coupling matrix $Y^{}_ν$ can be fully reconstructed by using the light Majorana neutrino masses $m^{}_i$, the heavy Majorana neutrino masses $M^{}_i$ and the PMNS lepton flavor mixing matrix $U$. It is the RGE-induced correction to the seesaw relation that helps interpret the observed baryon-antibaryon asymmetry of the Universe via flavored resonant thermal leptogenesis with $M^{}_1 \simeq M^{}_2 \ll M^{}_3$. We show that our idea works well in either the $τ$-flavored regime with equilibrium temperature $T \simeq M^{}_1 \in (10^9,…
In thermal leptogenesis, the cosmic matter-antimatter asymmetry is produced by CP violation in the decays N --> l + Φof heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos N into ordinary leptons l and Higgs particles Φ. If some charged-lepton Yukawa couplings are in equilibrium during the leptogenesis epoch, the l interactions with the background medium are flavor sensitive and the coherence of their flavor content defined by N --> l+Φis destroyed, modifying the efficiency of the inverse decays. We point out, however, that it is not enough that the flavor-sensitive processes are fast on the cosmic expansio…
In this letter we give a class of examples where the decays of the heavy Majorana neutrinos may violate CP even if there is no CP violation at low energies, i.e., leptogenesis can take place without Majorana or Dirac type CP phases at low energies.
We review some recent results on the connection between CP violation at low energies and Leptogenesis in the framework of specific flavour structures for the fundamental leptonic mass matrices with zero textures.
Assuming the seesaw and leptogenesis mechanisms, I give some general remarks on possible connection or disconnection between CP violation in heavy Majorana neutrino decays and that in neutrino oscillations. A simple but predictive ansatz is proposed to simultaneously interpret the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe and oscillations of solar and atmospheric neutrinos.
We analyze lepton flavour violation (LFV) and the generation of the observed baryon-antibaryon asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) within a generalized minimal lepton flavour violation framework with three quasi-degenerate heavy Majorana neutrinos. The BAU which is obtained through radiative resonant leptogenesis can successfully be generated widely independent of the Majorana scale in this scenario and flavour effects are found to be relevant. Then we discuss the specific case in which CP violation is exclusively present at low-energies (a real R matrix) in the flavour sensitive temperature regim…
We analyze leptogenesis in the context of seesaw models with almost conserved lepton number, focusing on the L-conserving contribution to the flavoured CP asymmetries. We find that, contrary to previous claims, successful leptogenesis is feasible for masses of the lightest heavy neutrino as low as M1 ~ 10^6 GeV, without resorting to the resonant enhancement of the CP asymmetry for strongly degenerate heavy neutrinos. This lower limit renders thermal leptogenesis compatible with the gravitino bound in supersymmetric scenarios.
The CP violation required in leptogenesis may have different origin, but in an effective theory they all are related to the rephasing invariant CP violating measure in the mixing matrix of the leptonic sector. We point out that the maximum amount of CP violation in some models can be estimated with our present knowledge of the neutrino mixing angles, which can help us understand the CP violation in the generation of the lepton asymmetry of the universe. For example, the possibility of leptogenesis may be ruled out in some models from an knowledge of the effective neutrino mass matrix.
If the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is produced by leptogenesis, CP violation is required in the lepton sector. In the seesaw extension of the Standard Model with three hierarchical right-handed neutrinos, we show that the baryon asymmetry is insensitive to the PMNS phases: thermal leptogenesis can work for any value of the observable phases. This result was well-known when there are no flavour effects in leptogenesis; we show that it remains true when flavour effects are included.
Leptogenesis is the most favourable mechanism for generating the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) which implies CP violation in the high energy scale. The low energy leptonic CP violation is expected to be observed in the neutrino oscillations and $0ν2 β$ decay experiments. Generally it is not possible to connect both the CP violations. Here we revisit the issue of connecting the two in flavoured leptogenesis scenario within the Type I seesaw in the light of recent neutrino oscillation and {\it Planck} data. With the recent precise measurements of $θ_{13}$ and BAU we are able to…
We discuss minimal non-supersymmetric models of resonant leptogenesis, based on an approximate flavour symmetries. As an illustrative example, we consider a resonant tau-leptogenesis model, compatible with universal right-handed neutrino masses at the GUT scale, where the required heavy-neutrino mass splittings are generated radiatively. In particular, we explicitly demonstrate, how a minimum number of three heavy Majorana neutrinos is needed, in order to obtain successful leptogenesis and experimentally testable rates for processes of lepton flavour violation, such as mu --> e gamma and mu --…
Recently a model of chaotic inflation was proposed, where the right handed sneutrinos drive the baryogenesis. We study some of the details of the model, particularly the aspect of CP violation, and determine the number of right handed sneutrinos required for the viability of such models.
A discrepancy between the experimental and theoretical results was reported for the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. In leptogenesis scenarios which are due to a decay of right-handed neutrinos, this anomaly leads to large violations of lepton flavour within the framework of supersymmetric see-saw models. It is shown that for a hierarchical right-handed neutrino mass spectrum, we generically expect to observe μ\to e γin the near future experiment.
We discuss the possibility of relating the size and sign of the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe to CP violation observable at low energies, in a framework where the observed baryon asymmetry is produced by leptogenesis through the out of the equilibrium decay of heavy Majorana neutrinos. We identify the CP violating phases entering in leptogenesis as well as those relevant for CP violation at low energies in the minimal seesaw model. We show that although in general there is no relation between these two sets of phases, there are specific frameworks in which such a connection may be …
We study the constraints on a minimal supersymmetric seesaw model imposed by neutrino data, charged lepton flavor violation, thermal leptogenesis and perturbativity. We show that it is possible to constrain the three heavy Majorana neutrino masses as well as the complex Yukawa coupling matrix. Our results provide a first step towards a seesaw benchmark model for further phenomenological studies and model building.
The CP-violation necessary for the generation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe $Y_B$ in the "flavoured" leptogenesis scenario can arise from the "low energy" PMNS neutrino mixing matrix $U$ and/or from the "high energy" part of neutrino Yukawa couplings, which can mediate CP-violating phenomena only at some high energy scale. The possible interplay between these two types of CP-violation is analysed. The type I see-saw model with three heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos having hierarchical spectrum is considered. We show that in the case of inverted hierarchical light neutrino mass s…
In the framework of a SUSY SO(10) model a phase is generated spontaneously for the B-L breaking VEV. Fitting this phase to the observed CP violating K,B decays all other CP breaking effects are uniquely predicted. In particular, the amount of Leptogenesis can be explicitly calculated and found to be in the right range and sign for the BAU.
Flavor effects due to lepton interactions in the early Universe may have played an important role in the generation of the cosmological baryon asymmetry through leptogenesis. If the only source of high-energy CP violation comes from the left-handed leptonic sector, then it is possible to establish a bridge between flavored leptogenesis and low-energy leptonic CP violation. We explore this connection taking into account our present knowledge about low-energy neutrino parameters and the matter-antimatter asymmetry observed in the Universe. In this framework, we find that leptogenesis favors a hi…
We discuss the possibility of relating the size and sign of the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe to CP violation observable at low energies, in a framework where the observed baryon asymmetry is produced by leptogenesis through out of equilibrium decay of heavy Majorana neutrinos. We have shown that although in general such a connection cannot be established, there are specific frameworks where a link does exist. Furthermore, we identify the CP violating phases relevant to leptogenesis and those relevant for low energy CP violation and build weak basis invariant conditions for CP cons…
Several classes of neutrino mass models, which can naturally account for hierarchical masses and the bi-large pattern of neutrino mixing, are constructed from a bottom-up perspective based on the idea of decoupling of one right-chiral neutrino from the seesaw mechanism. The interplay between the predictions for the lepton-flavour violation in the MSSM with universal soft masses and for leptogenesis is studied. In particular, classes of neutrino mass models in which successful leptogenesis implies BR(mu->e gamma) potentially observable in upcoming experiments are identified.
In R parity violating supersymmetry (conserving baryon number B but violating lepton number L), Majorana neutrino masses may arise at tree level, in one loop, and in two loops. The L violating interactions work together with the B + L violating electroweak sphalerons to erase any preexisting B or L asymmetry of the Universe. To have successful leptogenesis nevertheless, a specific scenario is proposed.
We study the possibility of generating the observed baryon asymmetry via leptogenesis in the decay of heavy Standard Model singlet fermions which carry lepton number, in a framework without Majorana masses above the electroweak scale. Such scenario does not contain any source of total lepton number violation besides the Standard Model sphalerons, and the baryon asymmetry is generated by the interplay of lepton flavour effects and the sphaleron decoupling in the decay epoch.
We investigate the viability of leptogenesis in models with three heavy right-handed neutrinos, where the charged-lepton and the neutrino Yukawa couplings are the only irreducible sources of lepton-flavour symmetry breaking (Minimal Lepton Flavour Violation hypothesis). We show that in this framework a specific type of resonant leptogenesis can be successfully accomplished. For natural values of the free parameters, this mechanism requires a high right-handed neutrino mass scale ($M_ν\gsim 10^{12}$ GeV). By means of a general effective field theory approach, we analyse the impact of the CP vio…
The see-saw mechanism to generate small neutrino masses is reviewed. After summarizing our current knowledge about the low energy neutrino mass matrix we consider reconstructing the see-saw mechanism. Low energy neutrino physics is not sufficient to reconstruct see-saw, a feature which we refer to as ``see-saw degeneracy''. Indirect tests of see-saw are leptogenesis and lepton flavor violation in supersymmetric scenarios, which together with neutrino mass and mixing define the framework of see-saw phenomenology. Several examples are given, both phenomenological and GUT-related. Variants of the…
We reveal the origin of the CP violation required by the leptogenesis in variously popular seesaw models. Especially we clarify that in a pure type-I/III seesaw with two fermion singlets/triplets, a combined type-I+III seesaw with one fermion singlet and one fermion triplet, or a combined type-I/III+II seesaw with one fermion singlet/triplet and one Higgs triplet, the CP violation for the leptogenesis can exactly come from the imaginary part of the neutrino mass matrix in a special basis where the Yukawa couplings involving one fermion singlet/triplet are allowed to get rid of any CP phases. W…
In the minimal left-right symmetric model with spontaneous CP violation, there are only two intrinsic CP violating phases to account for all CP violation in both the quark and lepton sectors. In addition, the left-and right-handed Majorana mass terms for the neutrinos are proportional to each other due to the parity in the model. This is thus a very constrained framework, making the existence of correlations among the CP violation in leptogenesis, neutrino oscillation and neutrinoless double beta decay possible.
We study the correlation between CP violation in neutrino oscillations and leptogenesis in the framework with two heavy Majorana neutrinos and three light neutrinos. Among three unremovable CP phases, a heavy Majorana phase contributes to leptogenesis. We show how the heavy Majorana phase contributes to Jarlskog determinant $J$ as well as neutrinoless double $β$ decay by identifying a low energy CP violating phase which signals the CP violating phase for leptogenesis. For some specific cases of the Dirac mass term of neutrinos, a direct relation between lepton number asymmetry and $J$ is obtai…
We revisit the possibility of producing the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe via thermal leptogenesis, where $CP$ violation comes exclusively from the low-energy phases of the neutrino mixing matrix. We demonstrate the viability of thermal flavoured leptogenesis across seven orders of magnitude $\left(10^{6}<T \text{ (GeV)}< 10^{13}\right)$, using modern numerical machinery, where the lower bound can be reached only if flavour effects are taken into account and its value depends on the allowed degree of cancellation between the tree-level and radiative contributions to the light neutr…
Leptogenesis in left-right symmetric theories is studied. The usual see-saw mechanism is modified by the presence of a left-handed Higgs triplet. A simple connection between the properties of the light left-handed and heavy right-handed neutrinos is found. Predictions of this scenario for neutrinoless double beta decay and terrestrial CP violation in long-baseline experiments are given. These observables can in principle distinguish different realizations of the model.
It was commonly thought that the observation of low energy leptonic CP-violating phases would not automatically imply the existence of a baryon asymmetry in the leptogenesis scenario. This conclusion does not generically hold when the issue of flavour is relevant and properly taken into account in leptogenesis. We illustrate this point with various examples studying the correlation between the baryon asymmetry and the CP-violating asymmetry in neutrino oscillations and the effective Majorana mass in neutrinoless double beta decay.
Dirac leptogenesis (or Dirac neutrinogenesis), in which neutrinos are purely Dirac particles, is an interesting alternative to the standard leptogenesis scenario. In its supersymmetric version, the modified form of the superpotential required for successful baryogenesis contributes new, generically non-flavor-diagonal terms to the slepton and sneutrino mass matrices. In this work, we examine how current experimental bounds on flavor-changing effects in the lepton sector (and particularly the bound on Mu -> e Gamma) constrain Dirac leptogenesis and we find that it is capable of succeeding with …
The complex Clebsch-Gordon coefficients in the double tetrahedral group T' offers the possibility that CP violation can be entirely geometrical in origin, as pointed out by us recently. In this note, we investigate leptogenesis in a SUSY SU(5) x T' model, which gives rise to realistic quark masses and CKM matrix elements, a near tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing pattern, as well as CP violating measures for all quarks and leptons. In terms of 9 independent parameters in the Yukawa sector, the predicted values of the 22 observables agree with current experimental values, including the recent T2K an…
We perform a comprehensive analysis of the phenomenology of leptonic low and high energy CP phases in a scenario with three heavy right-handed neutrinos in which a flavor and a CP symmetry are non-trivially broken. All CP phases as well as lepton mixing angles are determined by the properties of the flavor and CP symmetry and one free real parameter. We focus on the generation of the baryon asymmetry Y_B of the Universe via unflavored leptogenesis and the predictions of m_ee, the quantity measurable in neutrinoless double beta decay. We show that the sign of Y_B can be fixed and the allowed pa…
We study the baryogenesis via leptogenesis in a class of left-right symmetric models, in which $D$-parity is broken spontaneously. We first discuss the consequence of the spontaneous $D$-parity breaking on the neutrino masses. Than we study the lepton asymmetry in various cases, from the decay of right handed neutrino as well as the triplet Higgs, depending on their relative masses they acquire from the symmetry breaking pattern. The leptogenesis bound on their masses are discussed by taking into account the low energy neutrino oscillation data. It is shown that a TeV scale leptogenesis is via…
The link between low-energy CP violation and leptogenesis became more accessible with the understanding of flavor effects. However, a definite well-motivated model where such a link occurs was still lacking. Adjoint SU(5) is a simple grand unified theory where neutrino masses are generated through the Type I and Type III seesaw mechanisms, and the lepton asymmetry is generated by the fermionic triplet responsible for the Type III seesaw. We focus exclusively on the case of inverted hierarchy for neutrinos, and we show that successful flavored leptogenesis in this theory strongly points towards…
We construct a model in which neutrinos and anti-neutrinos acquire the same mass but slightly different energy dispersion relations.Despite CPT violation, spin-statistics is preserved. We find that leptogenesis can be easily explained within this model, without upsetting the solar, atmospheric and reactor neutrino data. Leptogenesis occurs without lepton number violation and the non-equilibrium condition. We consider only three active Dirac neutrinos, and no new particles or symmetries are introduced.
Soft supersymmetry breaking terms involving heavy singlet sneutrinos provide new sources of lepton number violation and of CP violation. In addition to the CP violation in mixing, investigated previously, we find that `soft leptogenesis' can be generated by CP violation in decay and in the interference of mixing and decay. These additional ways to leptogenesis can be significant for a singlet neutrino Majorana mass that is not much larger than the supersymmetry breaking scale, $M < 100 m_{SUSY}$. In contrast to CP violation in mixing, for some of these new contributions the sneutrino oscillati…
We study how lepton flavor violation (LFV) is related to the reactor angle $θ_{13}$, LHC/dark matter (DM) signal with a successful leptogenesis in a radiative seesaw model through $A_4$ flavor symmetry breaking, in the light of the deviation of tri-bimaximal mixing (TBM) angles and the recent precision oscillation data. To do this, we consider the normal mass spectrum of light neutrino giving a successful leptogenesis at electroweak (EW) scale or more with a relatively large $\sinθ_{13}\simeq{\cal O}(0.1)$, where a successful leptogenesis requires LHC/DM signal $m_{-}\lesssim$ a few keV in our…
The CP-violation necessary for the generation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe in the "flavoured" leptogenesis scenario can arise from the "low energy" PMNS neutrino mixing matrix and/or from the "high energy" part of neutrino Yukawa couplings, which can mediate CP-violating phenomena only at some high energy scale. The possible interplay between these two types of CP-violation is discussed. The type I see-saw model with three heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos having hierarchical spectrum is considered. The analysis shows that there exist regions in the leptogenesis parameter space …
We present a study of resonant leptogenesis in a radiative seesaw model. We consider the case where two quasi-degenerate right-handed neutrinos realize resonant leptogenesis, and the CP violation necessary to achieve leptogenesis occurs through the CP phases present in the neutrino mixing matrix. A numerical analysis is performed by taking the best-fit values from the current global data for three neutrino mixing angles and two mass-squared differences. We have shown how the predicted value of baryon asymmetry depends on the Dirac and Majorana CP phases. With the particular choice for the mass…
Within a supersymmetric (SUSY) type-I seesaw framework with flavor-blind universal boundary conditions, we study the consequences of requiring that the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe be explained by either thermal or non-thermal leptogenesis. In the former case, we find that the parameter space is very constrained. In the bulk and stop-coannihilation regions of mSUGRA parameter space (that are consistent with the measured dark matter abundance), lepton flavor-violating (LFV) processes are accessible at MEG and future experiments. However, the very high reheat temperature of the Univ…
It has been recently shown that the quantum Boltzmann equations may be relevant for the leptogenesis scenario. In particular, they lead to a time-dependent CP asymmetry which depends upon the previous dynamics of the system. This memory effect in the CP asymmetry is particularly important in resonant leptogenesis where the asymmetry is generated by the decays of nearly mass-degenerate right-handed neutrinos. We study the impact of the non-trivial time evolution of the CP asymmetry in the so-called Minimal Lepton Flavour Violation framework where the charged-lepton and the neutrino Yukawa coupl…
