We consider special quantum systems containing both distinguishable and identical constituents. It is shown that for these systems the Freudenthal construction based on cubic Jordan algebras naturally defines entanglement measures invariant under the group of stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC). For this type of multipartite entanglement the SLOCC classes can be explicitly given. These results enable further explicit constructions of multiqubit entanglement measures for distinguishable constituents by embedding them into identical fermionic ones. We also prove that the Plucker relations for the embedding system provide a sufficient and necessary condition for the separability of the embedded one. We argue that this embedding procedure can be regarded as a convenient representation for quantum systems of particles which are really indistinguishable but for some reason they are not in the same state of some inner degree of freedom.
Using a generalization of Cayley's hyperdeterminant as a new measure of tripartite fermionic entanglement we obtain the SLOCC classification of three-fermion systems with six single particle states. A special subclass of such three-fermion systems is shown to have the same properties as the well-known three-qubit ones. Our results can be presented in a unified way using Freudenthal triple systems based on cubic Jordan algebras. For systems with an arbitrary number of fermions and single particle states we propose the Plücker relations as a sufficient and necessary condition of separability.
Special unextendible entangled basis of "type $k$" (SUEBk), a set of incomplete orthonormal special entangled states of "type $k$" whose complementary space has no special entangled state of "type $k$". This concept can be seem as a generalization of the unextendible product basis (UPB) introduced by Bennett et al. in [ Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{82}, 5385(1999) ] and the unextendible maximally entangled basis (UMEB) introduced by Bravyi and Smolin in [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{84}, 042306(2011)]. We present an efficient method to construct sets of SUEBk. The main strategy here is to decompose the wh…
The maximally entangled mixed states of Munro, James, White, and Kwiat [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 64} (2001) 030302] are shown to exhibit interesting features vis a vis conditional entropic measures. The same happens with the Ishizaka and Hiroshima states [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 62} 022310 (2000)], whose entanglement-degree can not be increased by acting on them with logic gates. Special types of entangled states that do not violate classical entropic inequalities are seen to exist in the space of two qubits. Special meaning can be assigned to the Munro {\it et al.} special participation ratio of 1.8.
We investigate sharing of bipartite entanglement in a scenario where half of an entangled pair is possessed and projectively measured by one observer, called Alice, while the other half is subjected to measurements performed sequentially, independently, and unsharply, by multiple observers, called Bobs. We find that there is a limit on the number of observers in this entanglement distribution scenario. In particular, for a two-qubit maximally entangled initial shared state, no more than twelve Bobs can detect entanglement with a single Alice for arbitrary -- possibly unequal -- sharpness param…
Entangled SU(2) and SU(1,1) coherent states are developed as superpositions of multiparticle SU(2) and SU(1,1) coherent states. In certain cases, these are coherent states with respect to generalized su(2) and su(1,1) generators, and multiparticle parity states arise as a special case. As a special example of entangled SU(2) coherent states, entangled binomial states are introduced and these entangled binomial states enable the contraction from entangled SU(2) coherent states to entangled harmonic oscillator coherent states. Entangled SU(2) coherent states are discussed in the context of pairs…
Gram matrix approach to an entanglement analysis of pure states describing $(d,\infty)$ -- quantum systems is being introduced. In particular, maximally entangled states are described as those having a special forms of the corresponding Gram matrices.
Entangled states of light exhibit measurable correlations between light detections at separated locations. These correlations are exploited in entangled-state quantum key distribution. To do so involves setting up and maintaining a rhythm of communication among clocks at separated locations. Here, we try to disentangle our thinking about clocks as used in actual experiments from theories of time, such as special relativity or general relativity, which already differ between each other. Special relativity intertwines the concept of time with a particular definition of the synchronization of clo…
We investigate the asymptotic rates of entanglement transformations for bipartite mixed states by local operations and classical communication (LOCC). We analyse the relations between the rates for different transitions and obtain simple lower and upper bound for these transitions. In a transition from one mixed state to another and back, the amount of irreversibility can be different for different target states. Thus in a natural way, we get the concept of "amount" of irreversibility in asymptotic manipulations of entanglement. We investigate the behaviour of these transformation rates for di…
We describe quantum circuits generating four-qubit maximally entangled states, the amount of entanglement being quantified by using the absolute value of the Cayley hyperdeterminant as an entanglement monotone. More precisely, we show that this type of four-qubit entangled states can be obtained by the action of a family of CNOT circuits on some special states of the LU orbit of the state |0000 >.
We in this paper strictly prove that some block diagonalizable two qubit entangled state with six none zero elements reaches its quantum relative entropy entanglement by the a separable state having the same matrix structure. The entangled state comprises local filtering result state as a special case.
Demonstrations of quantum entanglement which confirm the violation of Bell's inequality indicate that under certain conditions action at a distance is possible. This consequence seems to contradict the relativistic principle of causality, which asserts that an effect never precedes its cause, in any reference frame. By analyzing a numerical example of Bell's experiment with entangled pairs of photons, we show how observers in two inertial reference frames can disagree about the causality relation between two events. One observer claims that event 1 is the cause of event 2, while the other clai…
Long-distance Bell-type experiments are presented. The different experimental challenges and their solutions in order to maintain the strong quantum correlations between energy-time entangled photons over more than 10 km are reported and the results analyzed from the point of view of tests of fundamental physics as well as from the more applied side of quantum communication, specially quantum key distribution. Tests using more than one analyzer on each side are also presented.
For an atom in an externally driven cavity, we show that special initial states lead to near-disentangled atom-field evolution, and superpositions of these can lead to near maximally-entangled states. Somewhat counterintutively, we find that (moderate) spontaneous emission in this system actually leads to a transient increase in entanglement beyond the steady-state value. We also show that a particular field correlation function could be used, in an experimental setting, to track the time evolution of this entanglement.
We report that entangled pairs of quantum clocks (non-degenerate quantum bits) can be used as a specialized detector for precisely measuring difference of proper-times that each constituent quantum clock experiences. We describe why the proposed scheme would be more precise in the measurement of proper-time difference than a scheme of two-separate-quantum-clocks. We consider possibilities that the proposed scheme can be used in precision test of the relativity theory.
The structure of all completely positive quantum operations is investigated which transform pure two-qubit input states of a given degree of entanglement in a covariant way. Special cases thereof are quantum NOT operations which transform entangled pure two-qubit input states of a given degree of entanglement into orthogonal states in an optimal way. Based on our general analysis all covariant optimal two-qubit quantum NOT operations are determined. In particular, it is demonstrated that only in the case of maximally entangled input states these quantum NOT operations can be performed perfectl…
We demonstrate a compressive normalized ghost imaging system with entangled photons employing complementary compressive imaging (CCI) technique. The quantum ghost image reconstruction was achieved at only 19.53% sampling ratio of raster scanning. With the special +1/-1 type sensing matrix and appropriate optimal algorithm, the photon utilization efficiency and robustness of the imaging system is enhanced significantly. Our results reveal the great potential of CCI technique applied in quantum imaging and other quantum optics field such as quantum charactering and quantum state tomography to us…
According to the Black Hole/Qubit Correspondence (BHQC) certain black hole entropy formulas in supergravity can be related to multipartite entanglement measures of quantum information. Here we show that the origin of this correspondence is a connection between Hitchin functionals used as action functionals for form theories of gravity related to topological strings, and entanglement measures for systems with a small number of constituents. The basic idea acting as a unifying agent in these seemingly unrelated fields is stability connected to the mathematical notion of special prehomogeneous ve…
We study how well answer to the question ``Is the given quantum state equal to a certain maximally entangled state?'' using LOCC, in the context of hypothesis testing. Under several locality and invariance conditions, optimal tests will be derived for several special cases by using basic theory of group representations. Some optimal tests are realized by performing quantum teleportation and checking whether the state is teleported. We will also give a finite process for realizing some optimal tests. The performance of the tests will be numerically compared.
In quantum information theory, it is a fundamental problem to construct multipartite unextendible product bases (UPBs). We show that there exist two families UPBs in Hilbert space $\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathbb{C}^2\otimes\mathbb{C}^4$ by merging two different systems of an existing $7$-qubit UPB of size $11$. Moreover, a new family of $7$-qubit positive-partial-transpose (PPT) entangled states of rank $2^7-11$ is constructed. We analytically derive a geometric measure of entanglement of a special PPT entangled states. Also an upper bound a…
We propose a class of path-entangled photon Fock states for robust quantum optical metrology, imaging, and sensing in the presence of loss. We model propagation loss with beam-splitters and derive a reduced density matrix formalism from which we examine how photon loss affects coherence. It is shown that particular entangled number states, which contain a special superposition of photons in both arms of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, are resilient to environmental decoherence. We demonstrate an order of magnitude greater visibility with loss, than possible with N00N states. We also show that t…
We present a full definition of mixed maximally entangled (MME) states for multipartite systems, generalizing their existing definition for bipartite systems by using multipartite Schmidt decomposition. MME states are a special kind of maximally entangled mixed state (MEMS) for which every pure decomposition state in all decompositions is maximally entangled. Thus, MME states have entanglement 1 by all valid unit-normalized entanglement measures, whereas general MEMS can have entanglement less than 1. Multipartite MME states likely have important applications such as remote state preparation, …
Entanglement between the constituents of a quantum system is an essential resource in the implementation of many quantum processes and algorithms. Indeed, universal quantum computation is possible by measuring individual qubits comprising highly entangled cluster states. In this work it is shown that the unique gapped ground state of non-interacting fermions hopping on a specially prepared lattice is equivalent to a cluster state, where the entanglement between qubits results solely by fermionic indistinguishability and antisymmetry. A deterministic strategy for universal measurement-based qua…
We consider one-round games between a classical verifier and two provers who share entanglement. We show that when the constraints enforced by the verifier are `unique' constraints (i.e., permutations), the value of the game can be well approximated by a semidefinite program. Essentially the only algorithm known previously was for the special case of binary answers, as follows from the work of Tsirelson in 1980. Among other things, our result implies that the variant of the unique games conjecture where we allow the provers to share entanglement is false. Our proof is based on a novel `quantum…
We present three quantum key distribution protocols using entangled state. In the first two protocols, all Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen pairs are used to distribute a secret key except those chosen for eavesdropping check, because the communication parties measure each of their particles in an invariable measuring basis. The first protocol is based on the ideal of qubit transmission in blocks. Although it need quantum memory, its theoretic efficiency approximates to 100%. The second protocol does not need quantum memory and its efficiency for qubits can achieve 100%. In the third protocol, we prese…
We propose a simple quantum network to detect multipartite entangled states of bosons, and show how to implement this network for neutral atoms stored in an optical lattice. We investigate the special properties of cluster states, multipartite entangled states and superpositions of distinct macroscopic quantum states that can be identified by the network.
Quantum entanglement is a fundamental resource for quantum information processing and is widely used in quantum communication, quantum computation and quantum metrology. Early research on quantum entanglement mainly focus on qubit states, but in recent years, more and more research has begun to focus on high-dimensional entangled states. Compared with qubit entangled states, higher-dimensional entangled states have a larger information capacity and the potential to realize more complex quantum applications. In this Letter, we have experimentally prepared a special high-dimensional entangled st…
Focus is on two parties with Hilbert spaces of dimension d, i.e. "qudits". In the state space of these two possibly entangled qudits an analogue to the well known tetrahedron with the four qubit Bell states at the vertices is presented. The simplex analogue to this magic tetrahedron includes mixed states. Each of these states appears to each of the two parties as the maximally mixed state. Some studies on these states are performed, and special elements of this set are identified. A large number of them is included in the chosen simplex which fits exactly into conditions needed for teleportati…
We investigate some properties of multipartite entanglement of hypergraph states in purely hypergraph theoretical terms. We first introduce an approach for computing the concurrence between two specific qubits of a hypergraph state by using the so-called Hamming weights of several special subhypergraphs of the corresponding hypergraph. Then we quantify and characterize bipartite entanglement between each qubit pair of several special hypergraph states in terms of the concurrence obtained by using the above approach. Our main results include that (i) a graph g has a component with the vertex se…
A multipartite entanglement measure called the ent is presented and shown to be an entanglement monotone, with the special property of automatic normalization. Necessary and sufficient conditions are developed for constructing maximally entangled states in every multipartite system such that they are true-generalized X states (TGX) states, a generalization of the Bell states, and are extended to general nonTGX states as well. These results are then used to prove the existence of maximally entangled basis (MEB) sets in all systems. A parameterization of general pure states of all ent values is …
Entanglement and Bell nonlocality are used to describe quantum inseparabilities. Bell-nonlocal states form a strict subset of entangled states. A natural question arises concerning how much territory Bell nonlocality occupies entanglement for a general two-qubit entangled state. In this work, we investigate the relation between entanglement and Bell nonlocality by using lots of randomly generated two-qubit states, and give out a constraint inequality relation between the two quantum resources. For studying the upper or lower boundary of the inequality relation, we discover maximally (minimally…
One of the most striking features of quantum theory is the existence of entangled states, responsible for Einstein's so called "spooky action at a distance". These states emerge from the mathematical formalism of quantum theory, but to date we do not have a clear idea of the physical principles that give rise to entanglement. Why does nature have entangled states? Would any theory superseding classical theory have entangled states, or is quantum theory special? One important feature of quantum theory is that it has a classical limit, recovering classical theory through the process of decoheren…
Although the path-integral formalism is known to be equivalent to conventional quantum mechanics, it is not generally obvious how to implement path-based calculations for multi-qubit entangled states. Whether one takes the formal view of entangled states as entities in a high-dimensional Hilbert space, or the intuitive view of these states as a connection between distant spatial configurations, it may not even be obvious that a path-based calculation can be achieved using only paths in ordinary space and time. Previous work has shown how to do this for certain special states; this paper extend…
According to Quantum Mechanics, the particles can exhibit either particle properties or wave properties depending on the experimental set up (wave-particle dualism). A special behavior occurs for a system of two entangled particles 1 and 2 that propagate along two different directions in the space. In such a case, the entangled particle 2 should exhibit either the particle behavior or the wave behavior depending on the kind of measurement that is performed on particle 1 whatever is the actual distance between the two particles. The apparently surprising fact is that the "choice" of what kind o…
Relativistic bipartite entangled quantum states is studied to show that Nature doesn't favor nonlocality for massive particles in the ultra-relativistic limit. We found that to an observer (Bob) in a moving frame S', the entangled Bell state shared by Alice and Bob appears as the superposition of the Bell bases in the frame S' due to the requirement of the special relativity. It is shown that the entangled pair satisfies the Bell's inequality when the boost speed approaches the speed of light, thus providing a counter example for nonlocality of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen(EPR) paradox.
Quantum mechanics of composite systems, gives rise to certain special states called entangled states. A physical system, that is in an entangled state displays an intricate correlation between its subsystems. There are also some composite quantum states (classically correlated states or separable states) that are not entangled. It is generally claimed, often without a rigorous proof to support, that these intricate correlations of an entangled state cannot occur in a classical system. This expository article, provides an elementary proof that entangled states cannot arise in the setting of cla…
In this work, we study the local distinguishability of maximally entangled states (MESs). In particular, we are concerned with whether any fixed number of MESs can be locally distinguishable for sufficiently large dimensions. Fan and Tian \emph{et al.} have already obtained two satisfactory results for the generalized Bell states (GBSs) and the qudit lattice states when applied to prime or prime power dimensions. We construct a general twist-teleportation scheme for any orthonormal basis with MESs that is inspired by the method used in [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{70}, 022304 (2004)]. Using this tele…
In this paper, we study three specific aspects of entanglement in small spin clusters. We first study the effect of inhomogeneous exchange coupling strength on the entanglement properties of the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic linear chain tetramer compound NaCuAsO_{4}. The entanglement gap temperature, T_{E}, is found to have a non-monotonic dependence on the value of $α$, the exchange coupling inhomogeneity parameter. We next determine the variation of T_{E} as a function of S for a spin dimer, a trimer and a tetrahedron. The temperature T_{E} is found to increase as a function of S, but the scaled …
Systems of four nonbinary particles, each having three or more internal states, exhibit maximally entangled states that are inaccessible to four qubits. This breaks the pattern of two- and three-particle systems, in which the existing graph states are equally accessible to binary and nonbinary systems alike. We compare the entanglement properties of these special states (called P-states) with those of the more familiar GHZ and cluster states accessible to qubits. The comparison includes familiar entanglement measures, the "steering" of states by projective measurements, and the probability tha…
Multipartite entanglement purification is revisited by using the Local operations and classical communications(LOCCs). We demonstrate our idea by considering the tripartite case, i.e. the purification of tripartite entanglement. We express the general tripartite entangled states in a special representation of total spin operators $J_{123}^{2}$ and $% J_{12}^{2}$ of tripartite system with eigenvalues 15/4 and 2 respectively. This basis is a \textit{genuine basis} because it consists of of all the genuine entangled states of tripartite system. Our protocol is a recurrence one, and only two copie…
We analyse the role of degree of entanglement for Vaidman's game in a setting where the players share a set of partially entangled three-qubit states. Our results show that the entangled states combined with quantum strategies may not be always helpful in winning a game as opposed to the classical strategies. We further find the conditions under which quantum strategies are always helpful in achieving higher winning probability in the game in comparison to classical strategies. Moreover, we show that a special class of W states can always be used to win the game using quantum strategies irresp…
We argue that quantum nonlocality of entangled states is not an actual phenomenon. It appears in quantum mechanics as a consequence of the inconsistency of its superposition principle with the corpuscular properties of a quantum particle. In the existing form, this principle does not distinguish between macroscopically distinct states of a particle and their superpositions: it implies introducing observables for a particle, even if it is in an entangled state. However, a particle cannot take part simultaneously in two or more alternative macroscopically distinct sub-processes. Thus, calculatin…
One of the most striking features of quantum theory is the existence of entangled states, responsible for Einstein's so called "spooky action at a distance". These states emerge from the mathematical formalism of quantum theory, but to date we do not have a clear idea of which physical principles give rise to entanglement. Why does quantum theory have entangled states? Would any theory superseding classical theory have entangled states, or is quantum theory special? We demonstrate that without entanglement, non-classical degrees of freedom cannot reversibly interact. We present two postulates,…
We derive a class of inequalities, from the uncertainty relations of the SU(1,1) and the SU(2) algebra in conjunction with partial transposition, that must be satisfied by any separable two-mode states. These inequalities are presented in terms of the su(2) operators J_x, J_y, and the total photon number N_a+N_b. They include as special cases the inequality derived by Hillery and Zubairy [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 050503 (2006)], and the one by Agarwal and Biswas [New J. Phys. 7, 211 (2005)]. In particular, optimization over the whole inequalities leads to the criterion obtained by Agarwal and Bisw…
We argue that the so-called entangled states in quantum theory are not something exceptional, deserving a special attention in our efforts to understand conceptual foundations of quantum world. They appear by constructing the basis states of a compound system via the basis states of entering subsystems and describe it as a wholeness. While a system is considered as a wholeness, the individual members, forming the entangled state, have no physical meaning. In consequence, there is no physical ground for Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen (EPR) correlations arising in a process of decaying the system,…
We compare the classification as entangled or separable of Bell diagonal bipartite qudits with positive partial transposition (PPT) and their properties for different dimensions. For dimension $d \geq 3$, a form of entanglement exists that is hard to detect and called bound entanglement due to the fact that such entangled states cannot be used for entanglement distillation. Up to this date, no efficient solution is known to differentiate bound entangled from separable states. We address and compare this problem named separability problem for a family of bipartite Bell diagonal qudits with spec…
We present new bounds on the existence of general quantum maximum distance separable codes (QMDS): the length $n$ of all QMDS codes with local dimension $D$ and distance $d \geq 3$ is bounded by $n \leq D^2 + d - 2$. We obtain their weight distribution and present additional bounds that arise from Rains' shadow inequalities. Our main result can be seen as a generalization of bounds that are known for the two special cases of stabilizer QMDS codes and absolutely maximally entangled states, and confirms the quantum MDS conjecture in the special case of distance-three codes. As the existence of Q…
We develop and experimentally verify a theory of Type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in media with inhomogeneous distributions of second-order nonlinearity. As a special case, we explore interference effects from SPDC generated in a cascade of two bulk crystals separated by an air gap. The polarization quantum-interference pattern is found to vary strongly with the spacing between the two crystals. This is found to be a cooperative effect due to two mechanisms: the chromatic dispersion of the medium separating the crystals and spatiotemporal effects which arise from the inclu…
The behavior of games repeated in parallel, when played with quantumly entangled players, has received much attention in recent years. Quantum analogues of Raz's classical parallel repetition theorem have been proved for many special classes of games. However, for general entangled games no parallel repetition theorem was known. We prove that the entangled value of a two-player game $G$ repeated $n$ times in parallel is at most $c_G n^{-1/4} \log n$ for a constant $c_G$ depending on $G$, provided that the entangled value of $G$ is less than 1. In particular, this gives the first proof that the…
Entangled resources enable quantum sensing that achieves Heisenberg scaling, a quadratic improvement on the standard quantum limit, but preparing large scale entangled states is challenging in the presence of decoherence. We present a quantum control strategy using highly nonlinear geometric phase gates for preparing entangled states on spin ensembles which can be used for practical precision metrology. The method uses a dispersive coupling of $N$ spins to a common bosonic mode and does not require addressability, special detunings, or interactions between the spins. Using a control sequence t…
In a recent paper [Mod. Phys. Lett. A30 (2015) 1550104], the black-hole/qubit correspondence (BHQC) was exploited to define "black hole quantum circuits" allowing for a change of the supersymmetry-preserving features of electromagnetic charge configurations supporting the black hole solution, thus switching from one U-duality orbit to another, or - equivalently - from an element of the corresponding Freudenthal Triple System with a definite rank, to another one. On the supergravity side of BHQC, such quantum gates relate to particular symplectic transformations acting on the black hole charges…
Entanglement catalysis allows one to convert certain entangled states into others by the temporary involvement of another entangled state (so-called catalyst), where after the conversion the catalyst is returned to the same state. For bipartite pure entangled states that can be transformed in this way with unit probability, the respective Schmidt coefficients are said to satisfy the trumping relation, a mathematical relation which is an extension of the majorization relation. This article provides all necessary and sufficient conditions for the trumping relation in terms of the Schmidt coeffic…
We study the sensitivity of phase estimation using a generic class of path-symmetric entangled states $|φ\rangle|0\rangle+|0\rangle|φ\rangle$, where an arbitrary state $|φ\rangle$ occupies one of two modes in quantum superposition. This class of states includes the previously considered states, i.e. $NOON$ states and entangled coherent states, as special cases. With its generalization, we identify the practical limit of phase estimation under energy constraint that is characterized by the photon statistics of the component state $|φ\rangle$. We first show that quantum Cramer-Rao bound (QCRB) c…
The quantum entanglement as one of very important resources has been widely used in quantum information processing. In this work, we present a new kind of genuine multipartite entanglement. It is derived from special geometric feature of entangled systems compared with quantum multisource networks. We prove that any symmetric entangled pure state shows stronger nonlocality than the genuinely multipartite nonlocality in the biseparable model. Similar results hold for other entangled pure states with local dimensions no larger than $3$. We further provide computational conditions for witnessing …
We study the genuine multipartite entanglement in tripartite quantum systems. By using the Schmidt decomposition and local unitary transformation, we convert the general states to simpler forms and consider certain matrices from correlation tensors in the Bloch representation of the simplified density matrices. Using these special matrices, we obtain new criteria for genuine multipartite entanglement. Detail examples show that our criteria are able to detect more tripartite entangled and genuine tripartite entangled states than some existing criteria.
