Tidal disruption by massive black holes is a phenomenon, during which a large part of gravitational energy can be released on a very short time-scale. The time-scales and energies involved during X-ray and IR flares observed in Galactic centre suggest that they may be related to tidal disruption events. Furthermore, aftermath of a tidal disruption of a star by super-massive black hole has been observed in some galaxies, e.g. RX J1242.6-1119A. All these discoveries increased the demand for tools for tidal disruption study in curved space-time. Here we summarise our study of general relativistic effects on tidal deformation of stars and compact objects.
We show results from the radiation hydrodynamics (RHD) simulations of tidal disruption of a star on a parabolic orbit by a supermassive black hole (SMBH) based on a three-dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics code with radiative transfer. We find that such a tidally disrupted star fragment and form clumps soon after its tidal disruption. The fragmentation results from the endothermic processes of ionization and dissociation that reduce the gas pressure, leading to local gravitational collapse. Radiative cooling is less effective because the stellar debris is still highly optically thick …
Accretion of tidally disrupted stars (TDSs) is expected to contribute significantly to the growth of massive black holes (MBHs) with mass $\sim 10^6 M_{\odot}$ in galactic centers. In this paper, we quantitatively investigate the effect of the TDS accretion on the spin evolution of these relatively small MBHs, by also considering the accretion of gas-clouds with (many) chaotic episodes. We find that the accretion of TDSs can play an important role or even a dominant role in shaping the spin distribution of $\sim 10^6 M_{\odot}$ MBHs, depending on the contribution fraction ($f_{\rm TDE}$) of th…

We present the high angular resolution and high sensitivity images of the "Circum-Nuclear Disk (CND)" and its surrounding region of Milky Way Galaxy in the CS J=2-1, SiO v=0 J=2-1, H^13CO^+ J=1-0, C^34S J=2-1, and CH_3OH J_{K_a, K_c}=2_{1,1}-1_{1,0}A_{--} emission lines using ALMA. The CND is recognized as a torus-like molecular gas with gaps in these emission lines except for the CH_3OH emission line. The inner and outer radii of the CND are estimated to be R_in~1.5 and R_out~2 pc, respectively. The velocities of the rotation and radial motion are estimated to be V_rot~115 km s^-1 and V_rad~2…
We present an analysis of $\emph{VI}$ CCD time series photometry of globular cluster NGC 6712. Our main goal is to study the variable star population as indicators of the cluster mean physical parameters. We employed the Fourier decomposition of RR Lyrae light curves to confirm that $[\rm Fe/H]_{UVES} = -1.0 \pm 0.05$ is a solid estimate. We estimated the reddening to the cluster as $E(B-V)$ = 0.35 $\pm$ 0.04 from the RRab stars colour curves. The distance to the cluster was estimated using three independent methods which yielded a weighted mean distance $\big < d \big>$ = 8.1 $\pm$ 0.2 kpc. T…

We propose that the cloud moving on a highly eccentric orbit near the central black hole in our Galaxy, reported by Gillessen et al., is formed by a photoevaporation wind originating in a disk around a star that is tidally perturbed and shocked at every peribothron passage. The disk is proposed to have formed when a stellar black hole flew by the star, tidally disrupted its envelope, and placed the star on its present orbit with some of the tidal debris forming a disk. A disrupting encounter at the location of the observed cloud is most likely to be caused by a stellar black hole because of th…
The tidal disruption of a star by a supermassive black hole, and the subsequent accretion of the disrupted debris by that black hole, offers a direct means to study the inner regions of otherwise-quiescent galaxies. These tidal disruption events (TDEs) are being discovered at an ever-increasing rate. We present a model for the evolution of the tidally-disrupted debris from a partial TDE, in which a stellar core survives the initial tidal encounter and continues to exert a gravitational influence on the expanding stream of tidally-stripped debris. We use this model to show that the asymptotic f…
The Milky Way is filled with the tidally-disrupted remnants of globular clusters and dwarf galaxies. Determining the properties of these objects -- in particular, initial masses and density profiles -- is relevant to both astronomy and dark matter physics. However, most direct measures of mass cannot be applied to tidal debris, as the systems of interest are no longer in equilibrium. Since phase-space density is conserved during adiabatic phase mixing, Liouville's theorem provides a connection between stellar kinematics as measured by observatories such as Gaia and the original mass of the dis…
We present a spectroscopic study of the tidal tails and core of the Milky Way satellite Tucana III, collectively referred to as the Tucana III stream, using the 2dF+AAOmega spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope and the IMACS spectrograph on the Magellan/Baade Telescope. In addition to recovering the brightest 9 previously known member stars in the Tucana III core, we identify 22 members in the tidal tails. We observe strong evidence for a velocity gradient of 8.0 km/s/deg (or 18.3 km/s/kpc over at least 3$^{\circ}$ (or 1.3 kpc) on the sky. Based on the continuity in velocity we confir…
A population of highly energetic transient events in the centres of active galaxies
The destruction of a star by the tides of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) powers a bright accretion flare, and the theoretical modeling of such tidal disruption events (TDEs) can provide a direct means of inferring SMBH properties from observations. Previously it has been shown that TDEs with $β= r_{\rm t}/r_{\rm p} = 1$, where $r_{\rm t}$ is the tidal disruption radius and $r_{\rm p}$ is the pericenter distance of the star, form an in-plane caustic, or ``pancake,'' where the tidally disrupted debris is compressed into a one-dimensional line within the orbital plane of the star. Here we show …
The flare produced when a star is tidally disrupted by a supermassive black hole holds potential as a diagnostic of both the black hole mass and the star mass. We propose a new method to realize this potential based upon a physical model of optical/UV light production in which shocks near the apocenters of debris orbits dissipate orbital energy, which is then radiated from that region. Measurement of the optical/UV luminosity and color temperature at the peak of the flare leads directly to the two masses. The black hole mass depends mostly on the temperature observed at peak luminosity, while …
We present a novel explanation of the well known $M_{\bullet}-σ$ relation. In a triaxial potential binaries with chaotic orbits within a sphere that encompass $\sim100$ times the mass of the super-massive black-hole (SMBH) have a finite probability to be tidally disrupted by the SMBH. As a result one component loses energy and might itself break apart tidally and accreted onto the SMBH. More significantly, the other component, which gains energy, returns to the bulge and equilibrates its excess energy with the environment thereby changing the kinetic temperature, hence the velocity dispersion.…
We simulate the star cluster, made of stars in the main sequence and different black hole (BH) remnants, around SgrA* at the center of the Milky Way galaxy. Tracking stellar evolution, we find the BH remnant masses and construct the BH mass function. We sample 4 BH species and consider the impact of the mass-function in the dynamical evolution of system. Starting from an initial 6 dimensional family of parameters and using an MCMC approach, we find the best fits to various parameters of model by directly comparing the results of the simulations after $t = 10.5$ Gyrs with current observations o…
Stars that plunge into the center of a galaxy are tidally perturbed by a supermassive black hole (SMBH), with closer encounters resulting in larger perturbations. Exciting these tides comes at the expense of the star's orbital energy, which leads to the naive conclusion that a smaller pericenter (i.e., a closer encounter between the star and SMBH) always yields a more tightly bound star to the SMBH. However, once the pericenter distance is small enough that the star is partially disrupted, morphological asymmetries in the mass lost by the star can yield an \emph{increase} in the orbital energy…
Mergers are fundamental to the standard paradigm of galaxy evolution, and provide a natural formation mechanism for supermassive black hole binaries. The formation process of such a binary can have a direct impact on the rate at which stars are tidally disrupted by one or the other black hole, and the luminous signature of the tidal disruption itself can have distinct imprints of a binary companion. In this chapter we review our current understanding of the influence of black hole binarity on the properties of tidal disruption events. We discuss the rates of tidal disruption by supermassive bl…
Tidal disruption events occur rarely in any individual galaxy. Over the last decade, however, time-domain surveys have begun to accumulate statistical samples of these flares. What dynamical processes are responsible for feeding stars to supermassive black holes? At what rate are stars tidally disrupted in realistic galactic nuclei? What may we learn about supermassive black holes and broader astrophysical questions by estimating tidal disruption event rates from observational samples of flares? These are the questions we aim to address in this Chapter, which summarizes current theoretical kno…
Dwarf spheroidal galaxies of the Local Group obey a relationship between the line-of-sight velocity dispersion and half-light radius, although there are a number of dwarfs that lie beneath this relation with suppressed velocity dispersion. The most discrepant of these (in the Milky Way) is the `feeble giant' Crater II. Using analytic arguments supported by controlled numerical simulations of tidally-stripped flattened two-component dwarf galaxies, we investigate interpretations of Crater II within standard galaxy formation theory. Heavy tidal disruption is necessary to explain the velocity-dis…
As part of a series of papers aimed at understanding the evolution of the Milky Way's Central Molecular Zone (CMZ), we present hydrodynamical simulations of turbulent molecular clouds orbiting in an accurate model of the gravitational potential extant there. We consider two sets of model clouds differing in the energy content of their velocity fields. In the first, self--virialised set, the turbulent kinetic energies are chosen to be close in magnitude to the clouds' self--gravitational potential energies. Comparison with isolated clouds evolving without an external potential shows that the se…
In dense star clusters, such as globular and open clusters, dynamical interactions between stars and black holes (BHs) can be extremely frequent, leading to various astrophysical transients. Close encounters between a star and a stellar mass BH make it possible for the star to be tidally disrupted by the BH. Due to the relative low mass of the BH and the small cross section of the tidal disruption event (TDE) for cases with high penetration, disruptions caused by close encounters are usually partial disruptions. The existence of the remnant stellar core and its non-negligible mass compared to …
The centers of most galaxies contain massive black holes surrounded by dense star clusters. The structure of these clusters determines the rate and properties of observable transient events, such as flares from tidally disrupted stars and gravitational-wave signals from stars spiraling into the black hole. Most estimates of these rates enforce spherical symmetry on the cluster. Here we show that, in the course of generic evolutionary processes, a star cluster surrounding a black hole can undergo a robust phase transition from a spherical thermal equilibrium to a lopsided equilibrium, in which …
The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a global very long baseline interferometric array observing at a wavelength of 1.3 mm, detected the first image of the M87 supermassive black hole (SMBH). M87 is a giant elliptical galaxy at the center of Virgo cluster, which is expected to have formed through merging of cluster galaxies. Consequently M87* hosted mergers of black holes through dynamical friction and could have one or multiple binary companions with a low mass ratio at large separations. We show that a long-term monitoring of the M87 SMBH image over $\sim$1 year with absolute positional accura…
We study tidal stripping of fuzzy dark matter (FDM) subhalo cores using simulations of the Schrödinger-Poisson equations and analyze the dynamics of tidal disruption, highlighting the differences with standard cold dark matter. Mass loss outside of the tidal radius forces the core to relax into a less compact configuration, lowering the tidal radius. As the characteristic radius of a solitonic core scales inversely with its mass, tidal stripping results in a runaway effect and rapid tidal disruption of the core once its central density drops below $4.5$ times the average density of the host wi…
