We study tidal stripping of fuzzy dark matter (FDM) subhalo cores using simulations of the Schrödinger-Poisson equations and analyze the dynamics of tidal disruption, highlighting the differences with standard cold dark matter. Mass loss outside of the tidal radius forces the core to relax into a less compact configuration, lowering the tidal radius. As the characteristic radius of a solitonic core scales inversely with its mass, tidal stripping results in a runaway effect and rapid tidal disruption of the core once its central density drops below $4.5$ times the average density of the host within the orbital radius. Additionally, we find that the core is deformed into a tidally locked ellipsoid with increasing eccentricities until it is completely disrupted. Using the core mass loss rate, we compute the minimum mass of cores that can survive several orbits for different FDM particle masses and compare it with observed masses of satellite galaxies in the Milky Way.
Several recent studies have indicated that artificial subhalo disruption (the spontaneous, non-physical disintegration of a subhalo) remains prevalent in state-of-the-art dark matter-only cosmological simulations. In order to quantify the impact of disruption on the inferred subhalo demographics, we augment the semi-analytical SatGen dynamical subhalo evolution model with an improved treatment of tidal stripping that is calibrated using the DASH database of idealized high-resolution simulations of subhalo evolution, which are free from artificial disruption. We also develop a model of artifici…
Dark Matter Substructure in Numerical Simulations: A Tale of Discreteness Noise, Runaway Instabilities, and Artificial Disruption
We describe a simple extension to existing models for the tidal heating of dark matter subhalos which takes into account second order terms in the impulse approximation for tidal heating. We show that this revised model can accurately match the tidal tracks along which subhalos evolve as measured in high-resolution N-body simulations. We further demonstrate that, when a constant density core is introduced into a subhalo, this model is able to quantitatively reproduce the evolution and artificial disruption of N-body subhalos arising from finite resolution effects. Combining these results we co…
We compare the results of high-resolution simulations of individual dark matter subhalos evolving in external tidal fields with and without baryonic bulge and disk components, where the average dark matter particle mass is three orders of magnitude smaller than cosmological zoom-in simulations of galaxy formation. The Via Lactea II simulation is used to setup our initial conditions and provides a basis for our simulations of subhalos in a dark matter-only tidal field, while an observationally motivated model for the Milky Way is used for the tidal field that is comprised of a dark matter halo,…
The evolution of a dark matter halo in a dark matter only simulation is governed purely byNewtonian gravity, making a clean testbed to determine what halo properties drive its fate.Using machine learning, we predict the survival, mass loss, final position, and merging time of subhalos within a cosmological N-body simulation, focusing on what instantaneous initial features of the halo, interaction, and environment matter most. Survival is well predicted, with our model achieving 96.5% accuracy using only 3 model inputs from the initial interaction. However, the mass loss, final location, and mer…
We analyse the gas content evolution of infalling haloes in cluster environments from THE THREE HUNDRED project, a collection of 324 numerically modelled galaxy clusters. The haloes in our sample were selected within $5R_{200}$ of the main cluster halo at $z=0$ and have total halo mass $M_{200}\geq10^{11} h^{-1} M_{\odot}$. We track their main progenitors and study their gas evolution since their crossing into the infall region, which we define as $1-4R_{200}$. Studying the radial trends of our populations using both the full phase space information and a line-of-sight projection, we confirm t…
Given recent developments in our understanding of the Large Magellanic Cloud's (LMC) impact on the Milky Way's (MW) dark matter subhalo population, we compare the signatures of dark matter and baryonic physics on subhalos in MW systems with realistic LMC analogs. In particular, we study the effects of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM), warm dark matter (WDM), and the Galactic disk on the peak maximum circular velocity ($V_{\mathrm{peak}}$) function, radial distribution, and spatial distribution of MW and LMC-associated subhalos using cosmological dark matter-only zoom-in simulations of MW+LM…
The demographics of dark matter substructure depend sensitively on the nature of dark matter. Optimally leveraging this probe requires accurate theoretical predictions regarding the abundance of subhaloes. These predictions are hampered by artificial disruption in numerical simulations, by large halo-to-halo variance, and by the fact that the results depend on the baryonic physics of galaxy formation. In particular, numerical simulations have shown that the formation of a central disc can drastically reduce the abundance of substructure compared to a dark matter-only simulation, which has been…
We perform a numerical comparison between the fuzzy dark matter model and the cold dark matter model, focusing on formation of satellite galaxy planes around massive galaxies. Such galactic dynamics with controlled initial subhalo configurations are investigated using GADGET2 for the cold dark matter and PyUltraLight for the fuzzy dark matter, respectively. We demonstrate that satellite galaxies in the fuzzy dark matter side have a tendency to form more flattened and corotating satellite systems than in the cold dark matter side mainly due to the dissipation by the gravitational cooling effect…
The diverse dark matter density at sub-kiloparsec scales in Milky Way satellites:implications for the nature of dark matter
We explore the impact of elastic, anisotropic, velocity-dependent dark matter (DM) self-interactions on the host halo and subhalos of Milky Way (MW)--mass systems. We consider a generic self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) model parameterized by the masses of a light mediator and the DM particle. The ratio of these masses, $w$, sets the velocity scale above which momentum transfer due to DM self-interactions becomes inefficient. We perform high-resolution zoom-in simulations of an MW-mass halo for values of $w$ that span scenarios in which self-interactions either between the host and its subha…
Fuzzy dark matter (FDM) has been a promising alternative to standard cold dark matter. The model consists of ultralight bosons with mass $m_b \sim 10^{-22}$ eV and features a quantum-pressure-supported solitonic core that oscillates. In this work, we show that the soliton density oscillations persist even after significant tidal stripping of the outer halo. We report two intrinsic yet distinct timescales associated, respectively, with the ground-state soliton wavefunction $τ_{00}$ and the soliton density oscillations $τ_\text{soliton}$, obeying $τ_\text{soliton} /τ_{00} \simeq 2.3$. The centra…

We study how the indirect observation of dark matter substructures in the Milky Way, using recent stellar stream studies, translates into constraints for different dark matter models. Particularly, we use the measured number of dark subhalos in the mass range $10^7-10^9\,{\rm M_{\odot}}$ to constrain modifications of the subhalo mass function compared to the cold dark matter scenario. We obtain the lower bounds $m_{\rm WDM} > 3.2\,{\rm keV}$ and $m_{\rm FDM} > 5.2\times 10^{-21}\,{\rm eV}$ on the warm dark matter and fuzzy dark matter particle mass, respectively. When dark matter is coupled to…

A Fuzzy Dark Matter (FDM) halo consists of a soliton core close to the center and an NFW-like density profile in the outer region. Previous investigations found that the soliton core exhibits temporal oscillations and random walk excursions around the halo center. Analyzing a set of numerical simulations, we show that both phenomena can be understood as the results of wave interference -- a suitable superposition of the ground (solitonic) state and excited states in a fixed potential suffices to account for the main features of these phenomena. Such an eigenmode analysis can shed light on the …
Cosmological simulations of the same spiral galaxy: satellite properties, the role of baryonic physics and star formation history in shaping dark matter cores/cusps
The cuspy central density profiles of cold dark matter (CDM) haloes make them highly resilient to disruption by tides. Self-interactions between dark matter particles, or the cycling of baryons, may result in the formation of a constant-density core which would make haloes more susceptible to tidal disruption. We use N-body simulations to study the evolution of NFW-like "cored" subhaloes in the tidal field of a massive host, and identify the criteria and timescales for full tidal disruption. Our results imply that the survival of Milky Way satellites places constraints on the sizes of dark mat…
Tidal streams are highly sensitive to perturbations from passing dark matter (DM) subhalos and thus provide a means of measuring their abundance. In a recent paper, we analyzed the distribution of stars along the GD-1 stream with a combination of data from the Gaia satellite and the Pan-STARRS survey, and we demonstrated that the population of DM subhalos predicted by the cold dark matter (CDM) paradigm are necessary and sufficient to explain the perturbations observed in the linear density of stars. In this paper, we use the measurements of the subhalo mass function (SHMF) from the GD-1 data …
We review the physics and phenomenology of wave dark matter: a bosonic dark matter candidate lighter than about 30 eV. Such particles have a de Broglie wavelength exceeding the average inter-particle separation in a galaxy like the Milky Way, and are well described as classical waves. We outline the particle physics motivations for them, including the QCD axion and ultra-light axion-like-particles such as fuzzy dark matter. The wave nature of the dark matter implies a rich phenomenology: (1) Wave interference leads to order unity density fluctuations on de Broglie scale. A manifestation is vor…
We use a recent census of the Milky Way (MW) satellite galaxy population to constrain the lifetime of particle dark matter (DM). We consider two-body decaying dark matter (DDM) in which a heavy DM particle decays with lifetime $τ$ comparable to the age of the Universe to a lighter DM particle (with mass splitting $ε$) and to a dark radiation species. These decays impart a characteristic "kick velocity," $V_{\mathrm{kick}}=εc$, on the DM daughter particles, significantly depleting the DM content of low-mass subhalos and making them more susceptible to tidal disruption. We fit the suppression of…
The radial spatial distribution of low-mass satellites around a Milky Way (MW)-like host is an important benchmark for simulations of small-scale structure. The distribution is sensitive to the disruption of subhalos by the central disk and can indicate whether the disruption observed in simulations of MW analogs is artificial (i.e., numeric) or physical in origin. We consider a sample of 12 well-surveyed satellite systems of MW-like hosts in the Local Volume that are complete to $M_V<-9$ and within 150 projected kpc. We investigate the radial distribution of satellites and compare with $Λ$CDM…
Ultralight axion-like particles $m_a \sim 10^{-22}$ eV, or Fuzzy Dark Matter (FDM), behave comparably to cold dark matter (CDM) on cosmological scales and exhibit a kpc-size de Broglie wavelength capable of alleviating established (sub-)galactic-scale problems of CDM. Substructures inside an FDM halo incur gravitational potential perturbations, resulting in stellar heating sufficient to account for the Galactic disc thickening over a Hubble time, as first demonstrated by Church et al. We present a more sophisticated treatment that incorporates the full baryon and dark matter distributions of t…

We perform a comprehensive study of Milky Way (MW) satellite galaxies to constrain the fundamental properties of dark matter (DM). This analysis fully incorporates inhomogeneities in the spatial distribution and detectability of MW satellites and marginalizes over uncertainties in the mapping between galaxies and DM halos, the properties of the MW system, and the disruption of subhalos by the MW disk. Our results are consistent with the cold, collisionless DM paradigm and yield the strongest cosmological constraints to date on particle models of warm, interacting, and fuzzy dark matter. At $95…
