We explore consistency among different distance measures, including Supernovae Type Ia data, measurements of the Hubble parameter, and determination of the Baryon acoustic oscillation scale. We present new constraints on the cosmic transparency combining $H(z)$ data together with the latest Supernova Type Ia data compilation. This combination, in the context of a flat $Λ$CDM model, improves current constraints by nearly an order of magnitude. We re-examine the recently reported tension between the Baryon acoustic oscillation scale and Supernovae data in light of possible deviations from transparency, concluding that the source of the discrepancy may most likely be found among systematic effects of the modelling of the low redshift data or a simple $\sim 2-σ$ statistical fluke, rather than in exotic physics. Finally, we attempt to draw model-independent conclusions about the recent accelerated expansion, determining the acceleration redshift to be $z_{acc}=0.35^{+0.20}_{-0.13}$ (1-$σ$).
Massive gravity in the presence of doubly coupled matter field via en effective composite metric yields an accelerated expansion of the universe. It has been recently shown that the model admits stable de Sitter attractor solutions and could be used as a dark energy model. In this work, we perform a first analysis of the constraints imposed by the SNIa, BAO and CMB data on the massive gravity model with the effective composite metric and show that all the background observations are mutually compatible at the one sigma level with the model.
The motivation of the present work is to reconstruct a dark energy model through the {\it dimensionless dark energy function} $X(z)$, which is the dark energy density in units of its present value. In this paper, we have shown that a scalar field $ϕ$ having a phenomenologically chosen $X(z)$ can give rise to a transition from a decelerated to an accelerated phase of expansion for the universe. We have examined the possibility of constraining various cosmological parameters (such as the deceleration parameter and the effective equation of state parameter) by comparing our theoretical model with…
The $Λ$CDM model is the current standard model in cosmology thanks to its ability to reproduce the observations. Its first observational evidence appeared from the type Ia supernovae (SNIa) Hubble diagram. However, there has been some debate in the literature concerning the statistical treatment of SNIa. In this paper we relax the standard assumption that SNIa intrinsic luminosity is independent of the redshift, and we examine whether it may have an impact on the accelerated nature of the expansion of the Universe. In order to be as general as possible, we reconstruct the expansion rate of the…
Observational Constraints on Visser's Cosmological Model
The Universe is currently undergoing accelerated expansion driven by dark energy. Dark energy's essential nature remains mysterious: one means of revealing it is by measuring the Universe's size at different redshifts. This may be done using the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) feature, a standard ruler in the galaxy 2-Point Correlation Function (2PCF). In order to measure the distance scale, one dilates and contracts a template for the 2PCF in a fiducial cosmology, using a scaling factor $α$. The standard method for finding the best-fit $α$ is to compute the likelihood over a grid of roughly…
Observations of high-redshift Type Ia supernovae (SNe~Ia) are used to study the cosmic transparency at optical wavelengths. Assuming a flat $Λ$CDM cosmological model based on BAO and CMB results, redshift dependent deviations of SN~Ia distances are used to constrain mechanisms that would dim light. The analysis is based on the most recent Pantheon SN compilation, for which there is a $0.03\pm0.01 {\textrm \,(\rm stat)}$ mag discrepancy in the distant supernova distance moduli relative to the $Λ$CDM model anchored by supernovae at $z<0.05$. While there are known systematic uncertainties that co…
We use 38 C IV quasar (QSO) reverberation-mapped (RM) observations, which span eight orders of magnitude in luminosity and the redshift range $0.001064 \leq z \leq 3.368$, to simultaneously constrain cosmological-model and QSO radius-luminosity ($R-L$) relation parameters in six cosmological models, using an improved technique that more correctly accounts for the asymmetric errors bars of the time-lag measurements. We find that $R-L$ relation parameters are independent of the cosmological models used in the analysis and so the $R-L$ relation can be used to standardize the C IV QSOs. The C IV Q…

We study induced gravity dark energy models coupled with a simple monomial potential $\propto σ^n$ and a positive exponent $n$. These simple potentials lead to viable dark energy models with a weak dependence on the exponent, which characterizes the accelerated expansion of the cosmological model in the asymptotic attractor, when ordinary matter becomes negligible. We use recent cosmological data to constrain the coupling $γ$ to the Ricci curvature, under the assumptions that the scalar field starts at rest deep in the radiation era and that the gravitational constant in the Einstein equations…

Recently, Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) have been proposed as standardizable candles, thanks to an observed non-linear relation between their X-ray and optical-ultraviolet (UV) luminosities, which provides an independent measurement of their distances. In this paper, we use these observables for the first time to estimate the parameters of f(R) gravity models (specifically the Hu-Sawicki and the exponential models) together with the cosmological parameters. The importance of this type of modified gravity theories lies in the fact that they can explain the late time accelerated expansion of the…
In this paper we summarise the constraints that low-redshift data --such as supernovae Ia (SN Ia), baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) and cosmic chronometers (CC)-- are able to set on the concordance model and its extensions, as well as on inhomogeneous but isotropic models. We provide a broad overlook into these cosmological scenarios and several aspects of data analysis. In particular, we review a number of systematic issues of SN Ia analysis that include magnitude correction techniques, selection bias and their influence on the inferred cosmological constraints. Furthermore, we examine the …

The Galileon theory belongs to the class of modified gravity models that can explain the late-time accelerated expansion of the Universe. In previous works, cosmological constraints on the Galileon model were derived, both in the uncoupled case and with a disformal coupling of the Galileon field to matter. There, we showed that these models agree with the most recent cosmological data. In this work, we used updated cosmological data sets to derive new constraints on Galileon models, including the case of a constant conformal Galileon coupling to matter. We also explored the tracker solution of…
If the FRW metric is a good approximation on large scales, then the distance and the expansion rate, as well different notions of distance, satisfy certain consistency conditions. We fit the JLA SNIa distance data to determine the expected amplitude of the violation of these conditions if accelerated expansion is due to backreaction. Adding cosmic clock and BAO expansion rate data, we also model-independently determine the current observational limits on such violation. We find that the predicted maximum backreaction amplitude $|k_H|\lesssim1$ (95% C.I.) is of the same order as the current obs…
Observational evidence for the accelerated expansion of the universe requires dark energy for its explanation if general relativity is an accurate model of gravity. However, dark energy is a mysterious quantity and we do not know much about its nature so understanding dark energy is an exciting scientific challenge. Cosmological dark energy models are fairly well tested in the low and high redshift parts of the universe. The highest of the low redshift, $z\sim2.3$, region is probed by baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements and the only high redshift probe is the cosmic microwave backgr…

The fundamental nature and origin of dark energy are one of the premier mysteries of theoretical physics. In General Relativity Theory, the cosmological constant $Λ$ is the simplest explanation for dark energy. On the other hand, the cosmological constant $Λ$ suffers from a delicate issue so-called fine-tuning problem. This motivates one to modify the spacetime geometry of Einstein's GR. The $f(Q)$ gravity is a recently proposed modified theory of gravity in which the non-metricity scalar $Q$ drives the gravitational interaction. In this article, we consider a linear $f(Q)$ model, specifically…
