A high percentage of the astrophysically important RR Lyrae stars show a periodic amplitude and/or phase modulation of their pulsation cycles. More than a century after its discovery, this "Blazhko effect" still lacks acceptable theoretical understanding. In one of the plausible models for explaining the phenomenon, the modulation is caused by the effects of a magnetic field. So far, the available observational data have not allowed us to either support nor rule out the presence of a magnetic field in RR Lyrae stars. We intend to determine whether RR Lyrae stars are generally characterized by the presence of a magnetic field organized on a large scale. With the help of the FORS1 instrument at the ESO VLT we performed a spectropolarimetric survey of 17 relatively bright southern RR Lyrae stars, both Blazhko stars and non-modulated stars, and determined their mean longitudinal magnetic field with a typical error bar < 30 G. All our measurements of the mean longitudinal magnetic field resulted in null detections within 3 sigma. From our data we can set an upper limit for the strength of the dipole component of the magnetic fields of RR Lyrae stars to ~ 130 G. Because of the limitations intrinsic to the diagnostic technique, we cannot exclude the presence of higher order multipolar components. The outcome of this survey clarifies that the Blazhko modulation in the pulsation of RR Lyrae stars is not correlated with the presence of a strong, quasi-dipolar magnetic field.
One of the major science goals of the SkyMapper Survey of the Southern Hemisphere sky is the determination of the shape and extent of the halo of the Galaxy. In this paper we quantify the likely efficiency and completeness of the survey as regards the detection of RR Lyrae variable stars, which are excellent tracers of the halo stellar population. We have accomplished this via observations of the RR Lyrae-rich globular cluster NGC 3201. We find that for single epoch uvgri observations followed by two further epochs of g, r imaging, as per the intended three-epoch survey strategy, we recover kn…
We carry out a spectral analysis of the archival FUSE spectrum of the VY Scl nova-like cataclysmic variable MV Lyrae obtained in the high state. We find that standard disk models fail to fit the flux in the shorter wavelengths of FUSE (< 950$A). An improved fit is obtained by including a modeling of the boundary layer at the inner edge of the disk. The result of the modeling shows that in the high state the disk has a moderate accretion rate of about 2.E09 solar mass per year, a low inclination, a boundary layer with a temperature of around 100,000K, and size 0.20Rwd, and the white dwarf is po…
We present a group of 3740 previously identified RR Lyrae variables well-observed with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). We explore how the shape of the generic RR Lyrae mid-infrared light curve evolves in period-space, comparing light curves in mid-infrared and optical bands. We find that optical light curves exhibit high amplitudes and a large spectrum of light curve shapes, while mid-infrared light curves have low amplitudes and uniform light curve shapes. From the period-space analysis, we hope to improve the classification methods of RR Lyrae variables and enable reliable di…
We use the pulsational properties of the RR Lyrae variables in the globular cluster NGC 1851 to obtain detailed constraints of the various sub-stellar populations present along its horizontal branch. On the basis of detailed synthetic horizontal branch modeling, we find that minor helium variations (Y~0.248-0.280) are able to reproduce the observed periods and amplitudes of the RR Lyrae variables, as well as the frequency of fundamental and first-overtone RR Lyrae stars. Comparison of number ratios amongst the blue and red horizontal branch components and the two observed subgiant branches als…
On the basis of an extended set of nonlinear convective RR Lyrae pulsation models we derive the first theoretical light curves in the Gaia bands and the corresponding intensity-weighted mean magnitudes and pulsation amplitudes. The effects of chemical com-position on the derived Bailey diagrams in the Gaia filters are discussed for both Fundamental and First Overtone mode pulsators. The inferred mean magnitudes and colors are used to derive the first theoretical Period-Wesenheit relations for RR Lyrae in the Gaia filters. The application of the theoretical Period-Wesenheit relations for both t…
We present and discuss an extensive data set for the non-Blazhko ab-type RR Lyrae star SDSSJ015450+001501, including optical SDSS ugriz light curves and spectroscopic data, LINEAR and CSS unfiltered optical light curves, and infrared 2MASS JHKs and WISE W1 and W2 light curves. Most notably, light curves obtained by 2MASS include close to 9000 photometric measures collected over 3.3 years and provide exceedingly precise view of near-IR variability. These data demonstrate that static atmosphere models are insufficient to explain multi-band photometric light curve behavior and present strong cons…
We present results from six years of recalibrated and new spectropolarimetric data taken with the University of Wisconsin's Half-Wave Spectropolarimeter (HPOL) and six years of new data taken with the photoelastic modulating polarimeter (PEMP) at the Flower and Cook Observatory. Combining these data with polarimetric data from the literature allows us to characterize the intrinsic BVRI polarized light curves. A repeatable discrepancy of 0.245 days (approximately 6 hours) between the secondary minima in the total light curve and the polarization curve in the V band, with similar behavior in the…
Recent theoretical and observational findings breathed new life into the field of RR Lyrae stars. The ever more precise and complete measurements of the space asteroseismology missions revealed new details, such as the period doubling and the presence of the additional modes in the stars. Theoretical work also flourished: period doubling was explained and an additional mode has been detected in hydrodynamic models as well. Although the most intriguing mystery, the Blazhko-effect has remained unsolved, new findings indicate that the convective cycle model can be effectively ruled out for short-…
The nature of shock waves in non-fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars remains a mystery because of limited spectroscopic observations. We apply a pattern recognition algorithm on spectroscopic data from SDSS and LAMOST and report the first evidence of hydrogen emission in first-overtone and multi-mode RR Lyrae stars showing the "first apparition", which is the most prominent observational characteristic of shock in RR Lyrae variables. We find ten RRc stars in SDSS, ten RRc stars in LAMOST, and three RRd stars in LAMOST that show blueshifted Balmer emissions. The emission features possibly indicate …
AR Herculis is an RR Lyrae star of type RRab whose spectral type ranges from A7 to F3. Its visual brightness varies between 10.59 mag and 11.63 mag (V). By analysis of 34,000 measurements from the AAVSO International Database and additional data from the BAV, 116 times of maximum between 2003 and 2015 were derived. For the time span 2009 to 2015, a new period value of P = 0.46999746(145) days was derived from the (O-C) analysis. Furthermore, the derived maximum timings indicate a strong Blazhko effect with a Blazhko period of PB = 32.062(13) days. The evolution of the observed maximum brightne…
The study of RR Lyrae stars has recently been invigorated thanks to the long, uninterrupted, ultra-precise time series data provided by the Kepler and CoRoT space telescopes. We give a brief overview of the new observational findings concentrating on the connection between period doubling and the Blazhko modulation, and the omnipresence of additional periodicities in all RR Lyrae subtypes, except for non-modulated RRab stars. Recent theoretical results demonstrate that if more than two modes are present in a nonlinear dynamical system such as a high-amplitude RR Lyrae star, the outcome is ofte…
We report the first extensive model atmosphere and detailed chemical abundance study of eight RR Lyrae variable stars of c subclass throughout their pulsation cycles. Atmospheric parameters effective temperature, surface gravity, microturbulent velocity, and metallicity have been derived. Spectra for this abundace analysis have been obtained with the echelle spectrograph of 100-inch du Pont telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. We have found metallicities and element abundance ratios to be constant within observational uncertainties at all phases of all stars. Moreover, the $α$-element and Fe…
We present BVR light curves of pulsating stars, ST Boo and RR Leo, obtained between March and September 2007 at the Ankara University Observatory (AUG) and the TÜB{İ}TAK National Observatory (TUG). Although these observational data are insufficient to obtain the reliable results for a frequency analysis of ST Boo and RR Leo stars, in this study, we tried to investigate the pulsation phenomena of these two stars, as an overview, using the Period04 software package. As preliminary results, we present the possible frequencies for ST Boo and RR Leo.
Developments of this far-reaching research field are summarized from an observational point of view, mentioning important and interesting phenomena discovered recently by photometry of stellar oscillations of any kind. A special emphasis is laid on Cepheids and RR Lyrae type variables.
M55 (NGC 6809) and NGC 6362 are among the few globular clusters for which masses and radii have been derived to high precision for member binary stars. They also contain RR Lyrae variables which, together with their non-variable horizontal-branch (HB) populations, provide tight constraints on the cluster reddenings and distance moduli through fits of stellar models to their pulsational and evolutionary properties. Reliable (m-M)_V estimates yield M_V and M_bol values of comparable accuracy for binary stars because the V-band bolometric corrections applicable to them have no more than a weak de…
The Blazhko effect is the conspicuous amplitude and phase modulation of the pulsation of RR Lyrae stars that was discovered in the early 20th century. The field of study of this mysterious modulation has recently been invigorated thanks to the space photometric missions providing long, uninterrupted, ultra-precise time series data. In this paper I give a brief overview of the new observational findings related to the Blazhko effect, like extreme modulations, irregular modulation cycles and additional periodicities. I argue that these findings together with dedicated ground-based efforts now pr…
Up-to-date isochrones, zero-age horizontal branch (ZAHB) loci, and evolutionary tracks for core He-burning stars are applied to the color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of M3, M15, and M92, focusing in particular on their RR Lyrae populations. Periods for ab- and c-type variables are calculated using the latest theoretical calibrations of log P_ab and log P_c as a function of luminosity, mass, effective temperature, and metallicity. Our models are generally able to reproduce the measured periods to well within the uncertainties implied by the stellar properties on which pulsation periods depend, as…
The Blazhko effect is a long term, generally irregular modulation of the light curves that occurs in a sizeable number of RR Lyrae stars. The physical origin of the effect has been a puzzle ever since its discovery over a hundred years ago. We build here upon the recent observational and theoretical work of Szabo et al. on RRab stars who found with hydrodynamical simulations that the fundamental pulsation mode can get destabilized by a 9:2 resonant interaction with the 9th overtone. Alternating pulsation cycles arise, although these remain periodic, i.e. not modulated as in the observations. H…
We report the first estimate of the He abundance of the population of RR Lyrae stars in the Galactic bulge. This is done by comparing the recent observational data with the latest models. We use the large samples of ab type RR Lyrae stars found by OGLE IV in the inner bulge and by the VVV survey in the outer bulge. We present the result from the new models computed by Marconi et al. (2017), showing that the minimum Period for fundamental RR Lyrae pulsators depends on the He content. By comparing these models with the observations in a Period versus effective temperature plane, we find that the…
Hydrogen emissions of RR Lyrae variables are the imprints of shock waves traveling through their atmospheres. We develop a pattern recognition algorithm, which is then applied to single-epoch spectra of SDSS and LAMOST. These two spectroscopic surveys covered $\sim$ 10,000 photometrically confirmed RR Lyrae stars. We discovered in total 127 RR Lyrae stars with blueshifted Balmer emission feature, including 103 fundamental mode (RRab), 20 first-overtone (RRc), 3 double-mode (RRd), and 1 Blazhko type (temporary classification for RR Lyrae stars with strong Blazhko modulation in Catalina sky surv…
We present some recent findings concerning the use of RR Lyrae as distance indicators and stellar tracers. We outline pros and cons of field and cluster RR Lyrae stars and discuss recent theoretical findings concerning the use of the Bailey (amplitude vs pulsation period) diagram to constrain the possible occurrence of Helium enhanced RR Lyrae stars. Nonlinear, convective RR Lyrae models indicate that the pulsation properties of RR Lyrae stars are minimally affected by the helium content. The main difference between canonical and He enhanced models is due to the increase in luminosity predicte…
A new, extended time-series photometry of M3 RR Lyrae stars has revealed that four of the ten double-mode stars show large-amplitude Blazhko modulation of both radial modes. The first, detailed analysis of the peculiar behavior of the unique, Blazhko RRd stars is given. While the P1/P0 period ratio is normal, and the overtone mode is dominant in the other RRd stars of the cluster, the period ratio is anomalous and the fundamental mode has a larger (or similar) mean amplitude than the overtone has in Blazhko RRd stars. The modulations of the fundamental and overtone modes are synchronized only …
We present new radial velocities, improved pulsation periods and reference epoch s of 11 field RR Lyrae ab-type variables: AS Vir, BS Aps, CD Vel, DT Hya, RV Oct, TY Gru, UV Oct, V1645 Sgr, WY Ant, XZ Aps and Z Mic. This study is based on high resolution spectra obtained with the echelle spectro graph of the 2.5-m du Pont telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. We obtained ~200 spectra per star (i.e, total of ~2300 spectra) distributed more or less uniformly throughout their pulsation cycles. Radial velocity curves and photometric lightcurves phased to our new ephemerides are presented for all …
The CoRoT (Convection, Rotation and planetary Transits) space mission provides a valuable opportunity to monitor stars with uninterrupted time sampling for up to 150 days at a time. The study of RR Lyrae stars, performed in the framework of the Additional Programmes belonging to the exoplanetary field, will particularly benefit from such dense, long-duration monitoring. The Blazhko effect in RR Lyrae stars is a long-standing, unsolved problem of stellar astrophysics. We used the CoRoT data of the new RR Lyrae variable CoRoT 101128793 (f0=2.119 c/d, P=0.4719296 d) to provide us with more detail…
We observed two fields near M32 with the Advanced Camera for Surveys/High Resolution Channel (ACS/HRC) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The main field, F1, is 1.8 arcmin from the center of M32; the second field, F2, constrains the M31 background, and is 5.4 arcmin distant. Each field was observed for 16-orbits in each of the F435W (narrow B) and F555W (narrow V) filters. The duration of the observations allowed RR Lyrae stars and other short-period variables to be detected. A population of RR Lyrae stars determined to belong to M32 would prove the existence of an ancient population i…
We present 87 candidates for RR Lyrae variable stars in binary systems, based on our new search using the light-travel time effect (LTTE) and observed - calculated ($O-C$) diagrams in the Galactic bulge time-series photometry of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. Out of these, 61 are new candidates, while 26 have been announced previously. Furthermore, 12 stars considered as binary candidates in earlier works are discarded from the list, either as they were found to have $O-C$ diagrams incompatible with the LTTE or because their long-term periodicity is definitely caused by the Blaz…
We present results from a comparative study of light curves of Cepheid and RR Lyrae stars in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds with their theoretical models generated from the stellar pulsation codes. Fourier decomposition method is used to analyse the theoretical and the observed light curves at multiple wavelengths. In case of RR Lyrae stars, the amplitude and Fourier parameters from the models are consistent with observations in most period bins except for low metal-abundances ($Z<0.004$). In case of Cepheid variables, we observe a greater offset between models and observations for both …
Steps toward the nature inside RR Lyrae variables can not only improve our understanding of variable stars but also innovate the precision when we use them as tracers to map the structure of the universe. In this work, we develop a hand-crafted one-dimensional pattern recognition pipeline to fetch out the "first apparitions", the most prominent observational characteristic of shock. We report the first detection of hydrogen emission lines in the first-overtone and multi-mode RR Lyrae variables. We find that there is an anti-correlation between the intensity and the radial velocity of the emiss…
We made a supplemental study of the superoutbursts and superhumps in SU UMa stars by using the recently released Kepler public data of V1504 Cyg and V344 Lyr. One of the superoutbursts in V1504 Cyg was preceded by a precursor normal outburst which was well separated from the main superoutburst. The superhump first appeared during the descending branch of the precursor normal outburst and it continued into quiescence (the deep dip between the precursor and the main superoutburst), and it began to grow in amplitude with the growth of the main superoutburst after quiescence ended. A similar pheno…
We present new nonlinear, time-dependent convective hydrodynamical models of RR Lyrae stars computed assuming a constant helium-to-metal enrichment ratio and a broad range in metal abundances (Z=0.0001--0.02). The stellar masses and luminosities adopted to construct the pulsation models were fixed according to detailed central He burning Horizontal Branch evolutionary models. The pulsation models cover a broad range in stellar luminosity and effective temperatures and the modal stability is investigated for both fundamental and first overtones. We predict the topology of the instability strip …
Classical double-mode pulsators (RR Lyrae stars and delta Cepheids) are important for their simultaneous pulsation in low-order radial modes. This enables us to put stringent constraints on their physical parameters. We use 30 bright galactic double-mode RR~Lyrae (RRd) stars to estimate their luminosities and compare them with those derived from the parallaxes of the recent data release (EDR3) of the Gaia survey. We employ pulsation and evolutionary models, together with observationally determined effective temperatures to derive the basic stellar parameters. Excluding 6 outlying stars (e.g., …
We present the analysis of the Blazhko effect - quasi-periodic modulation of pulsation amplitude and/or phase - in the Galactic bulge first overtone RR Lyrae stars (RRc). We used the data gathered during the fourth phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE). Out of 10 826 analyzed RRc stars, Blazhko effect was detected in 607 stars which constitute 5.6 percent of the sample. It is the largest and most homogeneous sample of modulated RRc stars analyzed so far. Modulation periods cover a wide range, from slightly above 2 d to nearly 3000 d. Multiperiodic modulation was detected…
We report the results of CCD $V$, $r$ and $I$ time-series photometry of the globular cluster NGC 5053. New times of maximum light are given for the eight known RR Lyrae stars in the field of our images and their periods are revised. Their $V$ light curves were Fourier decomposed to estimate their physical parameters. A discussion on the accuracy of the Fourier-based iron abundances, temperatures, masses and radii is given. New periods are found for the 5 known SX Phe stars and a critical discussion of their secular period changes is offered. The mean iron abundance for the RR Lyrae stars is fo…
We present a new set of horizontal-branch (HB) models computed with the MESA stellar evolution code. The models adopt $α$-enhanced \cite{ags09} metals mixtures and include the gravitational settling of He. They are used in our HB population synthesis tool to generate theoretical distributions of HB stars in order to describe the multiple stellar populations in the globular clusters 47Tuc, M3, and M13. The observed HB in 47Tuc is reproduced very well by our simulations for [Fe/H] $= -0.70$ and [$α$/Fe] $= +0.4$ if the initial helium mass fraction varies by $ΔY_0 \sim 0.03$ and approximately 21%…
We present a Bayesian analysis of the distances to 15,040 Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) RR Lyrae stars using $V$- and $I$-band light curves from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment, in combination with new $z$-band observations from the Dark Energy Camera. Our median individual RR Lyrae distance statistical error is 1.89 kpc (fractional distance error of 3.76 per cent). We present three-dimensional contour plots of the number density of LMC RR Lyrae stars and measure a distance to the core LMC RR Lyrae centre of ${50.2482\pm0.0546 {\rm(statistical)} \pm0.4628 {\rm(systematic)} {\rm kpc…
Like Hipparcos, Gaia is designed to give absolute parallaxes, independent of any astrophysical reference system. And indeed, Gaia's internal zero-point error for parallaxes is likely to be smaller than any individual parallax error. Nevertheless, due in part to mechanical issues of unknown origin, there are many astrophysical questions for which the parallax zero-point error $σ(π_0)$ will be the fundamentally limiting constraint. These include the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Galactic Center. We show that by using the photometric parallax estimates for RR Lyrae stars (RRL) wi…
In spite of the accumulating high quality data on RR Lyrae stars, the underlying cause of the (quasi)periodic light curve modulation (the so-called Blazhko effect) of these objects remains as mysterious as it was more than hundred years ago when the first RR Lyrae observations were made. In this review we briefly summarize the current observational status of the Blazhko stars, discuss the failure of all currently available ideas attempting to explain the Blazhko effect and finally, we contemplate on various avenues, including massive 2-3D modeling to make progress. Somewhat unconventionally to…

We have discovered a new, rare triple-mode RR Lyr star, EPIC 201585823, in the Kepler K2 mission Campaign 1 data. This star pulsates primarily in the fundamental and first-overtone radial modes, and, in addition, a third nonradial mode. The ratio of the period of the nonradial mode to that of the first-overtone radial mode, 0.616285, is remarkably similar to that seen in 11 other triple-mode RR Lyr stars, and in 260 RRc stars observed in the Galactic Bulge. This systematic character promises new constraints on RR Lyr star models. We detected subharmonics of the nonradial mode frequency, which …
Recent progress in the studies of pulsating variable stars is summarized from an observational point of view. A number of unexpected phenomena have been revealed in the case of pulsators in the classical instability strip. These discoveries -- lacking theoretical explanation yet -- make pulsating stars more valuable objects for astrophysics than before. The emphasis is laid on Cepheids of all kind and RR Lyrae type variables, as well as binarity among pulsating variable stars.
Classical Cepheid and RR Lyrae variables are radially pulsating stars that trace young and old-age stellar populations, respectively. These classical pulsating stars are the most sensitive probes for the precision stellar astrophysics and the extragalactic distance measurements. Despite their extensive use as standard candles thanks to their well-defined Period-Luminosity relations, distance measurements based on these objects suffer from their absolute primary calibrations, metallicity effects, and other systematic uncertainties. Here, I present a review of classical Cepheid, RR Lyrae, and Ty…
We present a comprehensive study of Z CVn, an RR Lyrae star that shows long-term cyclic variations of its pulsation period. A possible explanation suggested from the shape of the O-C diagram is the light travel-time effect, which we thoroughly examine. We used original photometric and spectroscopic measurements and investigated the period evolution using available maximum times spanning more than one century. If the binary hypothesis is valid, Z CVn orbits around a black hole with minimal mass of $56.5$ $\mathfrak{M}_{\odot}$ on a very wide ($P_{\rm orbit}=78.3$ years) and eccentric orbit ($e=…

In a recent paper (Kovacs 2018) we examined the incidence rate of the modulated RR Lyrae stars by using the data from Campaigns 01 - 04 of the Kepler K2 mission. We found an observed rate of ~90%, implying near 100% underlying rate, after correcting for detection bias due to observational noise. In this work we extend the sample to Campaign 08 and check the reliability of our earlier estimate. We get the same high rate, stressing the importance of full time series modelling (including systematics) in searching for shallow signals in the presence of large amplitude variabilities.
Radial velocities of 2768 fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) toward the Southern Galactic bulge are presented, spanning the southern bulge from -8 < l < +8 and -3 < b <-6. Distances derived from the pulsation properties of the RRLs are combined with Gaia proper motions to give constraints on the orbital motions of 1389 RRLs. The majority (~75%) of the bulge RRLs have orbits consistent with these stars being permanently bound to <3.5 kpc from the Galactic Center, similar to the bar. However, unlike the bulge giants, the RRLs exhibit slower rotation and a higher velocity dispersion. The high…

The projected density distribution of type ab RR Lyrae (RRab) stars was characterised from the innermost regions of the Milky Way to the halo, with the aim of placing constraints on the Galaxys evolution. The compiled sample (N_RRab = 64,850) stems from fundamental mode RR Lyrae variables identified by the VVV, OGLE, and Gaia surveys. The distribution is well fitted by three power laws over three radial intervals. In the innermost region (R < 2.2 deg) the distribution follows Sigma_RRab[1] propto R ^(-0.94 +- 0.051), while in the external region the distribution adheres to Sigma_RRab[2] propto…
Recent pieces of evidence have revealed that most, and possibly all, globular star clusters are composed of groups of stars that formed in multiple episodes with different chemical compositions. In this sense, it has also been argued that variations in the initial helium abundance ($Y$) from one population to the next are also the rule, rather than the exception. In the case of the metal-intermediate globular cluster M4 (NGC 6121), recent high-resolution spectroscopic observations of blue horizontal branch (HB) stars (i.e., HB stars hotter than the RR Lyrae instability strip) suggest that a la…
We developed a new approach to provide accurate estimates of metal content, reddening and true distance modulus of RR Lyrae stars (RRLs). The method is based on homogeneous optical ($BVI$) and near-infrared ($JHK$) mean magnitudes and on predicted period--luminosity--metallicity relations ($IJHK$) and absolute mean magnitude--metallicity relations ($BV$). We obtained solutions for three different RRL samples in $ω$ Cen: first overtone (RRc,~90), fundamental (RRab,~80) and global (RRc+RRab) in which the period of first overtones were fundamentalized. The metallicity distribution shows a well de…
