Using the speckle camera SHARP at the 3.5m ESO NTT, Köhler and collaborators found an object ~3.5 mag fainter in K only 1.3" north-east of the T Tauri star [MR81] Ha 17 in the Corona Australis (CrA) star-forming region, which could be either a brown dwarf or a T Tauri star with an edge-on disk. We attempt to study this faint object in detail. We acquired deep VLT NACO near-infrared images at three epochs to determine, whether [MR81] Ha 17 and the nearby faint object are co-moving and to measure the infrared colors of both objects. We obtained optical and infrared spectra of both objects with the VLT using FORS and ISAAC, respectively, to determine spectral types and temperatures as well as ages and masses. The T Tauri star [MR81] Ha 17 and the faint nearby object have a projected separation of 1369.58 mas, i.e. 178 AU at 130 pc. They share the same proper motion (~5 sigma), so that they most certainly form a bound binary pair. The apparently fainter component [MR81] Ha 17 NE has a spectral type of M2e, while the apparently brighter component [MR81] Ha 17 SW, the previously known T Tauri star, has a spectral type of M4-5e. We can identify a nearly edge-on disk around [MR81] Ha 17 NE by visual inspection, which has a diameter of at least 30 to 50 AU. We are able to detect strong emission lines in [MR81] Ha 17 NE, which are almost certainly due to ongoing accretion. The NE object is detectable only by means of its scattered light. If both objects are coeval (2-3 Myr) and located at the same distance (~130 pc as CrA), then the apparently fainter [MR81] Ha 17 NE is more massive (primary) component with a nearly edge-on disk and the apparently brighter component [MR81] Ha 17 SW is less massive (com- panion). Both are low-mass T Tauri stars with masses of ~0.5 and 0.23 \pm 0.05 solar masses, respectively.
Spectral observations of classical T Tauri stars show a wide range of line profiles, many of which reveal signs of matter inflow and outflow. Halpha is the most commonly observed line profile due to its intensity, and it is highly dependent on the characteristics of the surrounding environment of these stars. Our aim is to analyze how the Halpha line profile is affected by the various parameters of our model which contains both the magnetospheric and disk wind contributions to the Halpha flux. We used a dipolar axisymmetric stellar magnetic field to model the stellar magnetosphere and a modifi…
We present results from an Halpha emission-line survey in a one square degree area centered on the Orion Nebula Cluster, obtained with the Wide Field Grism Spectrograph-2 on the 2.2-meter telescope of the University of Hawaii. We identified 587 stars with Halpha emission, 99 of which, located mainly in the outer regions of the observed area, have not appeared in previous Halpha surveys. We determined the equivalent width (EW) of the line, and based on it classified 372 stars as classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) and 187 as weak line T Tauri stars (WTTS). Simultaneous r', i' photometry indicates a …
Young T Tauri stars (TTS) are surrounded by an accretion disk, which over time disperses due to photoevaporation, accretion, and possibly planet formation. The accretion shock on the central star produces an UV/optical veiling continuum, line emission, and X-ray signatures. As the accretion rate decreases, the impact on the central star must change. In this article we study MN Lup, a young star where no indications of a disk are seen in IR observations. We present XMM-Newton and VLT/UVES observations, some of them taken simultaneously. The X-ray data show that MN Lup is an active star with L_X…
Aims: We investigate the structure of the circumstellar disk of the T Tauri star S CrA N and test whether the observations agree with the standard picture proposed for Herbig Ae stars. Methods: Our observations were carried out with the VLTI/AMBER instrument in the H and K bands with the low spectral resolution mode. For the interpretation of our near-infrared AMBER and archival mid-infrared MIDI visibilities, we employed both geometric and temperature-gradient models. Results: To characterize the disk size, we first fitted geometric models consisting of a stellar point source, a ring-shaped d…
We present Halpha linear spectropolarimetry of a large sample of Herbig Ae/Be stars. Together with newly obtained data for 17 objects, the sample contains 56 objects, the largest such sample to date. A change in linear polarization across the Halpha line is detected in 42 (75 %) objects, which confirms the previous finding that the circumstellar environment around these stars on small spatial scales has an asymmetric structure, which is typically identified with a disk. A second outcome of this research is that we confirm that Herbig Ae stars are similar to T Tauri stars in displaying a line p…
The star S CrA is a tight visual binary consisting of two classical T Tauri stars, both with outstanding spectral characteristics and brightness variations. High-resolution spectra were collected at ESO and photometric observations with the SMARTS telescope. Both stars undergo large variation in brightness caused mainly by variable foreground extinction. From the stellar parameters we conclude that the two stars are remarkably similar, and that S CrA can be regarded as a T Tauri twin. Rotational periods and inclinations are also similar. The stars differ, however, in terms of degree of veiling…

This paper summarizes several results concerning the comparison between accretion-related properties of cool (T Tauri; T < 7000 K, M < 1 Msun and hot (Herbig Ae/Be; 7000 < T(K) < 13000; 1 < M(Msun) < 6) pre-main sequence (PMS) stars. This comparison gives insight into the analogies/differences in the physics of the star-disk interaction and in the physical mechanisms driving disk dissipation. Several optical and near-IR line luminosities used for low-mass objects are also valid to estimate typical accretion rates for intermediate-mass stars under similar empirical expressions. In contrast, the…
We conducted a 12-month monitoring campaign of 33 T Tauri stars (TTS) in Taurus. Our goal was to monitor objects that possess a disk but have a weak Halpha line, a common accretion tracer for young stars, to determine whether they host a passive circumstellar disk. We used medium-resolution optical spectroscopy to assess the objects' accretion status and to measure the Halpha line. We found no convincing example of passive disks; only transition disk and debris disk systems in our sample are non-accreting. Among accretors, we find no example of flickering accretion, leading to an upper limit o…
The YY Ori stars are T Tauri stars with prominent time-variable redshifted absorption components that flank certain emission lines. One of the brightest in this class is S CrA, a visual double star. We have obtained a series of high-resolution spectra of the two components during four nights with the UVES spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope. We followed the spectral changes occurring in S CrA to derive the physical structure of the accreting gas. We found that both stars are very similar with regard to surface temperature, radius, and mass. Variable redshifted absorption components are pa…
To investigate the inner regions of protoplanetary disks, we performed near-infrared interferometric observations of the classical TTauri binary system S CrA. We present the first VLTI-GRAVITY high spectral resolution ($R\sim$4000) observations of a classical TTauri binary, S CrA (composed of S CrA N and S CrA S and separated by $\sim$1.4"), combining the four 8-m telescopes in dual-field mode. Our observations in the near-infrared K-band continuum reveal a disk around each binary component, with similar half-flux radii of about 0.1 au at d$\sim$130 pc, inclinations ($i=$28$\pm$3$^o$\ and $i=$…
We present the results of an optical photometry and high-resolution spectroscopy campaign for a modest sample of X-ray selected stars in the Chamaeleon and Rho Ophiuchus star forming regions. With R~50000 optical spectra, we establish kinematic membership of the parent association and confirm stellar youth for each star in our sample. With the acquisition of new standardized BVIc photometry, in concert with near-infrared data from the literature, we derive age and mass from stellar positions in model-dependent Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams. We compare isochronal ages derived using colour-depend…
Young stars surrounded by disks with very low mass accretion rates are likely in the final stages of inner disk evolution and therefore particularly interesting to study. We present ultraviolet (UV) observations of the ~5-9 Myr old stars RECX-1 and RECX-11, obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) and Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), as well as optical and near infrared spectroscopic observations. The two stars have similar levels of near UV emission, although spectroscopic evidence indicates that RECX-11 is accreting and RECX-1 is not…
A multiwavelength observing campaign of the T Tauri star (TTS) GM Aur was undertaken in 2019 December that obtained Swift X-ray and NUV fluxes, HST NUV spectra, LCOGT ugri and TESS photometry, CHIRON Halpha spectra, ALMA 13CO and C18O line fluxes, and VLA 3 cm continuum fluxes taken contemporaneously over one month. The X-ray to optical observations were presented previously. Here we present the ALMA and VLA data and make comparisons to GM Aur's accretion and X-ray properties. We report no variability in the observed millimeter CO emission. Using disk chemistry models, we show that the magnitu…
We present pre- and post-outburst observations of the new FU Orionis-like young stellar object PTF 10qpf (also known as LkHa 188-G4 and HBC 722). Prior to this outburst, LkHa 188-G4 was classified as a classical T Tauri star on the basis of its optical emission-line spectrum superposed on a K8-type photosphere, and its photometric variability. The mid-infrared spectral index of LkHa 188-G4 indicates a Class II-type object. LkHa 188-G4 exhibited a steady rise by ~1 mag over ~11 months starting in Aug. 2009, before a subsequent more abrupt rise of > 3 mag on a time scale of ~2 months. Observatio…
There are many pertinent open issues in the area of star and planet formation. Large statistical samples of young stars across star-forming regions are needed to trigger a breakthrough in our understanding, but most optical studies are based on a wide variety of spectrographs and analysis methods, which introduces large biases. Here we show how graphical Bayesian networks can be employed to construct a hierarchical probabilistic model which allows pre-main sequence ages, masses, accretion rates, and extinctions to be estimated using two widely available photometric survey databases (IPHAS r/i/…
The goal of the paper is to present new results on light echoes from young stellar objects. Broad band CCD images were obtained over three months at one-to-two week intervals for the field of NGC 6726, using the large field-of-view remotely-operated telescope on top of Cerro Burek. We detected scattered light echoes around two young, low-amplitude, irregular variable stars. Observations revealed not just one, but multiple light echoes from brightness pulses of the T Tauri star S CrA and the Herbig Ae/Be star R CrA. Analysis of S CrA's recurring echoes suggests that the star is located 138 +/- …
Given that a majority of stars form in multiple systems, in order to fully understand the star- and planet-formation processes we must seek to understand them in multiple stellar systems. With this in mind, we present an analysis of the enigmatic binary T-Tauri system VV Corona Australis, in which both components host discs, but only one is visible at optical wavelengths. We seek to understand the peculiarities of this system by searching for a model for the binary which explains all the available continuum observations of the system. We present new mid-infrared interferometry and near-infrare…
We show that the very young brown dwarf candidate ISO217 (M6.25) is driving an intrinsically asymmetric bipolar outflow with a stronger and slightly faster red-shifted component based on spectro-astrometry of forbidden [SII] emission lines observed in UVES/VLT spectra taken in 2009. ISO217 is only one of a handful of brown dwarfs and VLMS (M5-M8) for which an outflow has been detected and that show that the T Tauri phase continues at the substellar limit. We measure a spatial extension of the outflow of +/-190mas (+/-30AU) and velocities of +/-40-50kms/s. We show that the velocity asymmetry be…
(Abridged) The detection of forming planets in disks around young stars remains elusive, and state-of-the-art observational techniques provide somewhat ambiguous results. It has been reported that the pre-transitional T Tauri star LkCa 15 could host three planets; candidate planet b is in the process of formation, as inferred from its H$α$ emission. However, a more recent work casts doubts on the planetary nature of the previous detections. We have observed LkCa 15 with ISIS/WHT. The spectrograph's slit was oriented towards the last reported position of LkCa 15 b (parallel direction) and 90deg…
