We study squeeze flow of two different fluids (castor oil and ethylene glycol) between a pair of glass plates and a pair of perspex plates, under an applied load. The film thickness is found to vary with time as a power-law, where the exponent increases with load. After a certain time interval the area of fluid-solid contact saturates to a constant value. This saturation area, increases with load at different rates for different fluid-solid combinations.
The interplay between phase separation and wetting of multicomponent mixtures is ubiquitous in nature and technology and recently gained significant attention across scientific disciplines, due to the discovery of biomolecular condensates. It is well understood that sessile droplets, undergoing phase separation in a static wetting configuration, exhibit microdroplet nucleation at their contact lines, forming an oil ring during later stages. However, very little is known about the dynamic counterpart, when phase separation occurs in a non-equilibrium wetting configuration, i.e., spreading dropl…
When sand flows out of a funnel onto a surface, a three dimensional pile that is stabilized by friction grows taller as it spreads. Here we investigate an idealized two dimensional analogue: spreading of a pile of monodisperse oil droplets at a boundary. In our system the droplets are buoyant, adhesive, and in contrast to sand, here friction is negligible. The buoyant droplets are added to the pile one-at-a-time. As the aggregate grows, it reaches a critical height and the 2D pile spreads out across the barrier. We find that, while granularity is important, the growth process is reminiscent of…
The fragmentation of liquid sheets produces a collection of droplets. The size distribution of the droplets has a considerable impact on the coating efficiency of sprays and the transport of contaminants. Although many processes commonly used particulate suspensions, the influence of the particles on the spreading dynamics of the sheet and its subsequent fragmentation has so far been considered negligible. In this paper, we consider experimentally a transient suspension sheet that expands radially. We characterize the influence of the particles on the dynamics of the liquid sheet and the fragm…
When a macroscopic droplet spreads, a thin precursor film of liquid moves ahead of the advancing liquid-solid-vapor contact line. Whereas this phenomenon has been explored extensively for planar solid substrates, its presence in nanostructured geometries has barely been studied so far, despite its importance for many natural and technological fluid transport processes. Here we use porous photonic crystals in silicon to resolve by light interferometry capillarity-driven spreading of liquid fronts in pores of few nanometers in radius. Upon spatiotemporal rescaling the fluid profiles collapse on …
When a liquid drop spreads on an adaptive substrate the latter changes its properties what may result in an intricate coupled dynamics of drop and substrate. Here we present a generic mesoscale hydrodynamic model for such processes that is written as a gradient dynamics on an underlying energy functional. We specify the model details for the example of a drop spreading on a dry polymer brush. There, liquid absorption into the brush results in swelling of the brush causing changes in the brush topography and wettability. The liquid may also advance within the brush via diffusion (or wicking) re…
We investigate the rapid spreading dynamics of a viscoelastic drop on a solid. Upon contact, surface tension drives a fast motion of the contact line along the substrate. Here, we resolve this motion for viscoelastic liquids by experiments on aqueous polymer solutions of varying concentration. It is found that while the contact line motion is only mildly affected by the polymers, the interface profile becomes much sharper owing to singular polymer stress. This behaviour is reminiscent of that observed for viscoelastic drop coalescence; in this light we revisit the analogy between spreading and…
The spreading of liquid drops on soft substrates is extremely slow, owing to strong viscoelastic dissipation inside the solid. A detailed understanding of the spreading dynamics has remained elusive, partly owing to the difficulty in quantifying the strong viscoelastic deformations below the contact line that determine the shape of moving wetting ridges. Here we present direct experimental visualisations of the dynamic wetting ridge, complemented with measurements of the liquid contact angle. It is observed that the wetting ridge exhibits a rotation that follows exactly the dynamic liquid cont…
The spreading under surface tension and gravity of a droplet of yield-stress fluid over a thin film of the same material is studied. The droplet converges to a final equilibrium shape once the driving stresses inside the droplet fall below the yield stress. Scaling laws are presented for the final radius and complemented with an asymptotic analysis for shallow droplets. Moreover, numerical simulations using the volume-of-fluid method and a regularized constitutive law, and experiments with an aqueous solution of Carbopol are presented.
When a droplet impacts a fabric mesh at a sufficiently high impact velocity, it not only spreads over the fabric but also penetrate its pores. To determine the influence of this liquid penetration of the fabric on droplet spreading on thin fabric meshes, we measured the droplet spreading ratio on fabric with and without an underlying substrate using a high-speed camera. For fabrics without a substrate, the droplet spreading ratio is reduced as the fabric penetration by the liquid reduces the droplet volume spreading on top of the fabric. Using entropic lattice Boltzmann simulations, we find th…
To reach a deeper understanding of fluid interfaces it is necessary to identify a meaningful coarse-graining length that separates intrinsic fluctuations from capillary ones, given the lack of a proper statistical mechanical definition of the latter. Here, with the help of unsupervised learning techniques, we introduce a new length scale based on the local density of the fluid. This length scale follows a scaling law that diverges more mildly than the bulk correlation length upon approaching the critical point. This allows to distinguish regimes of correlated and uncorrelated capillary waves f…
From hydrogels and plastics to liquid crystals, soft solids cover a wide array of synthetic and biological materials that play key enabling roles in advanced technologies such as 3D printing, soft robotics, wearable electronics, self-assembly, and bioartificial tissues. Their elasticity and stimuli-induced changes in mechanical, optical, or electrical properties offer a unique advantage in designing and creating new dynamically functional components for sensing, micro-actuation, colour changes, information, and mass transport. To harness the vast potential of soft solids, a thorough understand…
Complex fluids exhibit a variety of exotic flow behaviours under high stresses, such as shear thickening and shear jamming. Rheology is a powerful tool to characterise these flow behaviours over the bulk of the fluid. However, this technique is limited in its ability to probe fluid behaviour in a spatially resolved way. Here, we utilise high-speed imaging and the free-surface geometry in drop impact to study the flow of colloidal suspensions. We report, for the first time, observations of coexisting solid and liquid phases due to shear jamming caused by impact. In addition to observing Newtoni…
Here we report experiments on particle cluster settling at high Reynolds number in quiescent fluid contained in a vessel. The particles were observed to settle in a near-circular shape irrespective of the shape of the vessel cross-section and particle shape, size, and types. Effect of different parameters such as mass, type and aspect ratio of the particles, height, and viscosity of liquid was investigated. Formation of the hemispherical bottom cap of the cluster that bounces upon hitting the vessel bottom surface was found to be responsible for the final circular shape of the settled structur…
Stable array of point defects was generated in nematic liquid crystal. Point defects with topological charge of +1 and -1 (hedgehogs) were generated in vertically aligned liquid crystal cell. The hedgehogs were arranged in square or hexagonal arrays, and the shape of defect, such as radial or circular hedgehogs, were under the control of delicately patterned electrodes. Base on the two-dimensional defect array discovered in experiments, three-dimensional crystals of defects were postulated. The flux of the liquid crystal director field was summarized for each unit cell. The analysis showed tha…
