We introduce the class of projective reflection groups which includes all complex reflection groups. We show that several aspects involving the combinatorics and the representation theory of all non exceptional irreducible complex reflection groups find a natural description in this wider setting.
Projective re ection groups have been recently dened by the second author. They include a special class of groups denoted G(r; p; s; n) which contains all classical Weyl groups and more generally all the complex re ection groups of type G(r; p; n). In this paper we dene some statistics analogous to descent number and major index over the projective re ection groups G(r; p; s; n), and we compute several generating functions concerning these parameters. Some aspects of the representation theory of G(r; p; s; n), as distribution of one-dimensional characters and computation of Hilbert series of i…
Popov classified crystallographic complex reflection groups by determining lattices they stabilize. These analogs of affine Weyl groups have infinite order and are generated by reflections about affine hyperplanes; most arise as the semi-direct product of a finite complex reflection group and a full rank lattice. Steinberg's fixed point theorem asserts that the regular orbits under the action of a reflection group are exactly the orbits lying off of reflecting hyperplanes. This theorem holds for finite reflection groups (real or complex) and also affine Weyl groups but fails for some crystallo…
A finite subgroup of $GL(n,\mathbb C)$ is involutory if the sum of the dimensions of its irreducible complex representations is given by the number of absolute involutions in the group. A uniform combinatorial model is constructed for all non-exceptional irreducible complex reflection groups which are involutory including, in particular, all infinite families of finite irreducible Coxeter groups.
We extend the usual notion of fully commutative elements from the Coxeter groups to the complex reflection groups. Then we decompose the sets of fully commutative elements into natural subsets according to their combinatorial properties, and investigate the structure of these decompositions. As a consequence, we enumerate and describe the form of these elements in the complex reflection groups.
Renteln proved that the eigenvalues of the distance matrix of a Cayley graph of a real reflection group with respect to the set of all reflections are integral and provided a combinatorial formula for some such spectra. We prove the eigenvalues of the distance, adjacency, and codimension matrices of Cayley graphs of complex reflection groups with connection sets consisting of all reflections are integral and provide a combinatorial formula for the codimension spectra for a family of monomial complex reflection groups.
We show that in the complex reflection group $G_6$, reflection factorizations of a Coxeter element that have the same length and multiset of conjugacy classes are in the same Hurwitz orbit. This confirms one case of a conjecture of Lewis and Reiner.
This article computes the Tutte polynomial of the hyperplane arrangements associated to the complex reflection groups. The calculations are based on both formulas of De Concini and Procesi for Tutte polynomial and the normaliser of parabolic subgroups in complex reflection groups determined by Krishnasamy and Taylor.
We present an elementary type preserving bijection between noncrossing and nonnesting partitions for all classical reflection groups, answering a question of Athanasiadis.
Generalizing a result of Conway, Sloane, and Wilkes for real reflection groups, we show the Cayley graph of an imprimitive complex reflection group with respect to standard generating reflections has a Hamiltonian cycle. This is consistent with the long-standing conjecture that for every finite group, G, and every set of generators, S, of G the undirected Cayley graph of G with respect to S has a Hamiltonian cycle.
We show that the Hurwitz action is "as transitive as possible" on reflection factorizations of Coxeter elements in the well-generated complex reflection groups $G(d, 1, n)$ (the group of $d$-colored permutations) and $G(d, d, n)$.
Reflection length and codimension of fixed point spaces induce partial orders on a complex reflection group. While these partial orders are of independent combinatorial interest, our investigation is motivated by a connection between the codimension order and the algebraic structure of cohomology governing deformations of skew group algebras. In this article, we compare the reflection length and codimension functions and discuss implications for cohomology of skew group algebras. We give algorithms using character theory for computing reflection length, atoms, and poset relations. Using a mixt…
The eigenspace theory of unitary reflection groups, initiated by Springer and Lehrer, suggests that the following object is worthy of study: the poset of eigenspaces of elements of a unitary reflection group, for a fixed eigenvalue, ordered by the reverse of inclusion. We investigate topological properties of this poset. The new results extend the well-known work of Orlik and Solomon on the lattice of intersections of hyperplanes.
In this article we prove that the lattice of noncrossing partitions is EL-shellable when associated with the well-generated complex reflection group of type $G(d,d,n)$, for $d,n\geq 3$, or with the exceptional well-generated complex reflection groups which are no real reflection groups. This result was previously established for the real reflection groups and it can be extended to the well-generated complex reflection group of type $G(d,1,n)$, for $d,n\geq 3$, as well as to three exceptional groups, namely $G_{25},G_{26}$ and $G_{32}$, using a braid group argument. We thus conclude that the la…
In this paper we investigate light dual multinets labeled by a finite group in the projective plane $PG(2,\mathbb{K})$ defined over a field $\mathbb{K}$. We present two classes of new examples. Moreover, under some conditions on the characteristic $\mathbb{K}$, we classify group-labeled light dual multinets with lines of length least $9$.
Let $X$ be a nonempty real variety that is invariant under the action of a reflection group $G$. We conjecture that if $X$ is defined in terms of the first $k$ basic invariants of $G$ (ordered by degree), then $X$ meets a $k$-dimensional flat of the associated reflection arrangement. We prove this conjecture for the infinite types, reflection groups of rank at most $3$, and $F_4$ and we give computational evidence for $H_4$. This is a generalization of Timofte's degree principle to reflection groups. For general reflection groups, we compute nontrivial upper bounds on the minimal dimension of …
We study the geometry of point-orbits of elation groups with a given center and axis of a finite projective space. We show that there exists a 1-1 correspondence from conjugacy classes of such groups and orbits on projective subspaces (of a suitable dimension) of Singer groups of projective spaces. Together with a recent result of Drudge we establish the number of these elation groups.
We exhibit a family of real rotation groups whose subspace arrangements are not contained in that of any real reflection group, answering a question of Martino and Singh.
In any Coxeter group, the conjugates of elements in the standard minimal generating set are called reflections and the minimal number of reflections needed to factor a particular element is called its reflection length. In this article we prove that the reflection length function on an affine Coxeter group has a uniform upper bound. More precisely we prove that the reflection length function on an affine Coxeter group that naturally acts faithfully and cocompactly on $\R^n$ is bounded above by $2n$ and we also show that this bound is optimal. Conjecturally, spherical and affine Coxeter groups …
This article proves the existence of completely positive quasimultiplicative maps from the group algebra of imprimitive reflection groups to the set of bounded operators, and uses those linear maps to define creation and annihilation operators on the full Fock space.
We prove an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon, occurring in the context of noncrossing parititions for well-generated complex reflection groups.
This is a chapter in an upcoming Tamari Festscrift. Permutahedra are a class of convex polytopes arising naturally from the study of finite reflection groups, while generalized associahedra are a class of polytopes indexed by finite reflection groups. We present the intimate links those two classes of polytopes share.
We enumerate Hurwitz orbits of shortest reflection factorizations of an arbitrary element in the infinite family $G(m, p, n)$ of complex reflection groups. As a consequence, we characterize the elements for which the action is transitive and give a simple criterion to tell when two shortest reflection factorizations belong to the same Hurwitz orbit. We also characterize the quasi-Coxeter elements (those with a shortest reflection factorization that generates the whole group) in $G(m, p, n)$.
We define the excedance number on the complex reflection groups and compute its multidistribution with the number of fixed points on the set of involutions in these groups. We use some recurrence formulas and generating functions manipulations to obtain our results.
In any Coxeter group, the conjugates of elements in its Coxeter generating set are called reflections and the reflection length of an element is its length with respect to this expanded generating set. In this article we give a simple formula that computes the reflection length of any element in any affine Coxeter group and we provide a simple uniform proof.
For a finite real reflection group $W$ with Coxeter element $γ$ we give a uniform proof that the closed interval, $[I, γ]$ forms a lattice in the partial order on $W$ induced by reflection length. The proof involves the construction of a simplicial complex which can be embedded in the type W simplicial generalised associahedron.
In this note, we prove that for any finite dimensional vector space $V$ over $\mathbb {C}$, and for a finite cyclic group $G$, the projective variety $\mathbb P(V)/G$ is projectively normal with respect to the descent of $\mathcal O(1)^{\otimes |G|}$ by a method using toric variety, and deduce the EGZ theorem as a consequence.
This is the first of a series of papers in which we initiate and develop the theory of reflection monoids, motivated by the theory of reflection groups. The main results identify a number of important inverse semigroups as reflection monoids, introduce new examples, and determine their orders.
Let $W$ be a finite Coxeter group. We classify the reflection subgroups of $W$ up to conjugacy and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the map that assigns to a reflection subgroup $R$ of $W$ the conjugacy class of its Coxeter elements to be injective, up to conjugacy.
Suppose that a group $G$ acts transitively on the points of $\mathcal{P}$, a finite non-Desarguesian projective plane. We prove that if $G$ is insoluble then $G/O(G)$ is isomorphic to $SL_2(5)$ or $SL_2(5).2$.
