In a previous paper (Gayon & Bois 2008a), we have shown the general efficiency of retrograde resonances for stabilizing compact planetary systems. Such retrograde resonances can be found when two-planets of a three-body planetary system are both in mean motion resonance and revolve in opposite directions. For a particular two-planet system, we have also obtained a new orbital fit involving such a counter-revolving configuration and consistent with the observational data.
In the present paper, we analytically investigate the three-body problem in this particular case of retrograde resonances. We therefore define a new set of canonical variables allowing to express correctly the resonance angles and obtain the Hamiltonian of a system harboring planets revolving in opposite directions. The acquiring of an analytical "rail" may notably contribute to a deeper understanding of our numerical investigation and provides the major structures related to the stability properties. A comparison between our analytical and numerical results is also carried out.
Several planets have been found that orbit their host star on retrograde orbits (spin-orbit angle ϕ > 90°). Currently, the largest measured projected angle between the orbital angular momentum axis of a planet and the rotation axis of its host star has been found for HAT-P-14b to be $\approx$ 171°. One possible mechanism for the formation of such misalignments is through long-term interactions between the planet and other planetary or stellar companions. However, with this process, it has been found to be difficult to achieve retrogradely orbiting planets, especially planets that almost exactl…
We have investigated the dependence of the prograde/retrograde temporary capture of asteroids by a planet on their original heliocentric semimajor axes through analytical arguments and numerical orbital integrations in order to discuss the origins of irregular satellites of giant planets. We found that capture is mostly retrograde for the asteroids near the planetary orbit and is prograde for those from further orbits. An analytical investigation reveals the intrinsic dynamics of these dependences and gives boundary semimajor axes for the change in prograde/retrograde capture. The numerical ca…
We start by reviewing our previous work on retrograde orbital configurations and on modeling and identifying retrograde resonances. Then, we present new results regarding the enhanced stability of retrograde configurations with respect to prograde configurations in the low mass ratio regime of the planar circular restricted 3-body problem. Motivated by the recent discovery of small bodies which are in retrograde resonance with the Solar System's giant planets we then explore the case with mass ratio 0.001 and show new stability maps in a grid of semi-major axis versus eccentricity for the 2/1 …
We identify a set of asteroids among Centaurs and Damocloids, that orbit contrary to the common direction of motion in the Solar System and that enter into resonance with Jupiter and Saturn. Their orbits have inclinations I >= 140 deg and semi-major axes a < 15 AU. Two objects are currently in retrograde resonance with Jupiter: 2006 BZ8 in the 2/-5 resonance and 2008 SO218 in the 1/-2 resonance. One object, 2009 QY6, is currently in the 2/-3 retrograde resonance with Saturn. These are the first examples of Solar System objects in retrograde resonance. The present resonant configurations last f…
We present a numerical study on the stability of all fourth- and fifth-order retrograde mean motion resonances (1/3, 3/1, 1/4, 4/1, 2/3, and 3/2) in the 3-body problem composed of a solar mass star, a Jupiter mass planet, and an additional body with zero mass (elliptic restricted problem) or masses corresponding to either Neptune, Saturn, or Jupiter (planetary problem). The fixed point families exist in all cases and are identified through libration of all resonant angles simultaneously. In addition, configurations with libration of a single resonant angle were also observed. Our results for t…
Asteroids in mean motion resonances with giant planets are common in the solar system, but it was not until recently that several asteroids in retrograde mean motion resonances with Jupiter and Saturn were discovered. A retrograde co-orbital asteroid of Jupiter, 2015 BZ509 is confirmed to be in a long-term stable retrograde 1:1 mean motion resonance with Jupiter, which gives rise to our interests in its unique resonant dynamics. In this paper, we investigate the phase-space structure of the retrograde 1:1 resonance in detail within the framework of the circular restricted three-body problem. W…

As the discoveries of more minor bodies in retrograde resonances with giant planets, such as 2015 BZ509 and 2006 RJ2, our curiosity about the Kozai-Lidov dynamics inside the retrograde resonance has been sparked. In this study, we focus on the 3D retrograde resonance problem and investigate how the resonant dynamics of a minor body impacts on its own Kozai-Lidov cycle. Firstly we deduce the action-angle variables and canonical transformations that deal with the retrograde orbit specifically. After obtaining the dominant Hamiltonian of this problem, we then carry out the numerical averaging pro…
We report the discovery of WASP-8, a transiting planet of 2.25+-0.08 M_Jup on a strongly inclined eccentric 8.15-day orbit, moving in a retrograde direction to the rotation of its late-G host star. Evidence is found that the star is in a multiple stellar system with two other companions. The dynamical complexity of the system indicates that it may have experienced secular interactions such as the Kozai mechanism or a formation that differs from the ``classical" disc-migration theory.
We present a numerical study on the stability of the 1/2, 2/1 and 1/1 retrograde mean motion resonances in the 3-body problem composed of a solar mass star, a Jupiter mass planet and an additional body with zero mass (elliptic restricted 3-body problem) or masses corresponding to either Neptune, Saturn or Jupiter (planetary 3-body problem). For each system we obtain stability maps using the n-body numerical integrator REBOUND and computing the chaos indicator mean exponential growth factor of nearby orbits (MEGNO). We show that families of periodic orbits exist in all configurations and they c…
We continue the investigation of the dynamics of retrograde resonances initiated in Morais & Giuppone (2012). After deriving a procedure to deduce the retrograde resonance terms from the standard expansion of the three-dimensional disturbing function, we concentrate on the planar problem and construct surfaces of section that explore phase-space in the vicinity of the main retrograde resonances (2/-1, 1/-1 and 1/-2). In the case of the 1/-1 resonance for which the standard expansion is not adequate to describe the dynamics, we develop a semi-analytic model based on numerical averaging of the u…
We survey the methods proposed in the literature for detecting moons of extrasolar planets in terms of their ability to distinguish between prograde and retrograde moon orbits, an important tracer of moon formation channel. We find that most moon detection methods, in particular, sensitive methods for detecting moons of transiting planets, cannot observationally distinguishing prograde and retrograde moon orbits. The prograde and retrograde cases can only be distinguished where dynamical evolution of the orbit due to e.g. three body effects is detectable, where one of the two cases is dynamica…
Previous studies have shown that planets that rotate retrograde (backwards with respect to their orbital motion) generally experience less severe obliquity variations than those that rotate prograde (the same direction as their orbital motion). Here we examine retrograde-rotating planets on eccentric orbits and find a previously unknown secular spin-orbit resonance that can drive significant obliquity variations. This resonance occurs when the frequency of the planet's rotation axis precession becomes commensurate with an orbital eigenfrequency of the planetary system. The planet's eccentricit…
We investigate the stability of prograde versus retrograde planets in circular binary systems using numerical simulations. We show that retrograde planets are stable up to distances closer to the perturber than prograde planets. We develop an analytical model to compute the prograde and retrograde mean motion resonances' locations and separatrices. We show that instability is due to single resonance forcing, or caused by nearby resonances' overlap. We validate our results regarding the role of single resonances and resonances' overlap on orbit stability, by computing surfaces of section of the…
We find an interesting fact that fictitious retrograde co-orbitals of Saturn, or small bodies inside the retrograde 1:1 resonance with Saturn, are highly unstable in our numerical simulations. It is shown that in the presence of Jupiter, the retrograde co-orbitals will get ejected from Saturn's co-orbital space within a timescale of 10 Myr. This scenario reminds us of the instability of Saturn Trojans caused by both the Great Inequality and the secular resonances. Therefore, we carry out in-depth inspections on both mechanisms and prove that the retrograde resonance overlap, raised by Great In…
We perform numerical calculations of the expected transit timing variations (TTVs) induced on a Hot-Jupiter by an Earth-mass perturber. Motivated by the recent discoveries of retrograde transiting planets, we concentrate on an investigation of the effect of varying relative planetary inclinations, up to and including completely retrograde systems. We find that planets in low order (E.g. 2:1) mean-motion resonances (MMRs) retain approximately constant TTV amplitudes for $0<\,^{\circ}i<170\,^{\circ}$, only reducing in amplitude for $i > 170\,^{\circ}$. Systems in higher order MMRs (E.g. 5:1) inc…
We observed with the SOPHIE spectrograph (OHP, France) the transit of the HAT-P-6b exoplanet across its host star. The resulting stellar radial velocities display the Rossiter-McLaughlin anomaly and reveal a retrograde orbit: the planetary orbital spin and the stellar rotational spin point towards approximately opposite directions. A fit to the anomaly measures a sky-projected angle lambda = 166 +/- 10 degrees between these two spin axes. All seven known retrograde planets are hot jupiters with masses M_p < 3 M_Jup. About two thirds of the planets in this mass range however are prograde and al…

About 25 per cent of `hot Jupiters' (extrasolar Jovian-mass planets with close-in orbits) are actually orbiting counter to the spin direction of the star. Perturbations from a distant binary star companion can produce high inclinations, but cannot explain orbits that are retrograde with respect to the total angular momentum of the system. Such orbits in a stellar context can be produced through secular (that is, long term) perturbations in hierarchical triple-star systems. Here we report a similar analysis of planetary bodies, including both octupole-order effects and tidal friction, and find …
We report the discovery of the transiting giant planet WASP-17b, the least-dense planet currently known. It is 1.6 Saturn masses but 1.5-2 Jupiter radii, giving a density of 6-14 per cent that of Jupiter. WASP-17b is in a 3.7-day orbit around a sub-solar metallicity, V = 11.6, F6 star. Preliminary detection of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect suggests that WASP-17b is in a retrograde orbit (lambda ~ -150 deg), indicative of a violent history involving planet-planet or star-planet scattering. WASP-17b's bloated radius could be due to tidal heating resulting from recent or ongoing tidal circularis…
Motivated by the dynamics of resonance capture, we study numerically the coorbital resonance for inclination180 >=I>=0 in the circular restricted three-body problem. We examine the similarities and differences between planar and three dimensional coorbital resonance capture and seek their origin in the stability of coorbital motion at arbitrary inclination. After we present stability maps of the planar prograde and retrograde coorbital resonances, we characterize the new coorbital modes in three dimensions. We see that retrograde mode I (R1) and mode II (R2) persist as we change the relative i…
We explore the possibly that either star-spots or pulsations are the cause of a periodic radial-velocity signal (P~400 days) from the K-giant binary nu Octantis (P~1050 days, e~0.25), alternatively conjectured to have a retrograde planet. Our study is based on temperatures derived from 22 line-depth ratios (LDRs) for nu Oct and twenty calibration stars. Empirical evidence and stability modelling provide unexpected support for the planet since other standard explanations (star-spots, pulsations and additional stellar masses) each have credibility problems. However, the proposed system presents …
In this work, retrograde mean motion resonances (MMRs) are investigated by means of analytical and numerical approaches. Initially, we define a new resonant angle to describe the retrograde MMRs and then perform a series of canonical transformations to formulate the resonant model, in which the phase portrait, resonant centre and resonant width can be analytically determined. To validate the analytical developments, the non-perturbative analysis is made by taking advantage of Poincaré surfaces of section. Some modifications are introduced in the production of Poincaré sections and, in particul…
We present the first evidence of a retrograde orbit of the transiting exoplanet HAT-P-7b. The discovery is based on a measurement of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect with the Subaru HDS during a transit of HAT-P-7b, which occurred on UT 2008 May 30. Our best-fit model shows that the spin-orbit alignment angle of this planet is λ= -132.6 (+10.5, -16.3) degrees. The existence of such a retrograde planet have been predicted by recent planetary migration models considering planet-planet scattering processes or the Kozai migration. Our finding provides an important milestone that supports such dynami…
We report 1212 radial-velocity (RV) measurements obtained in the years 2009-2013 using an iodine cell for the spectroscopic binary nu Octantis (K1III/IV). This system (a_bin~2.6 au, P~1050 days) is conjectured to have a Jovian planet with a semi-major axis half that of the binary host. The extreme geometry only permits long-term stability if the planet is in a retrograde orbit. Whilst the reality of the planet (P~415 days) remains uncertain, other scenarios (stellar variability or apsidal motion caused by a yet unobserved third star) continue to appear substantially less credible based on CCF …
We report the detection of a double planetary system around the evolved intermediate-mass star HD 47366 from precise radial-velocity measurements at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory, Xinglong Station, and Australian Astronomical Observatory. The star is a K1 giant with a mass of 1.81+-0.13M_sun, a radius of 7.30+-0.33R_sun, and solar metallicity. The planetary system is composed of two giant planets with minimum mass of 1.75^{+0.20}_{-0.17}Mjup and 1.86^{+0.16}_{-0.15}Mjup, orbital period of 363.3^{+2.5}_{-2.4} d and 684.7^{+5.0}_{-4.9} d, and eccentricity of 0.089^{+0.079}_{-0.060} and 0.278…

In extending the analysis of the four secular resonances between close orbits in Li and Christou (Celest Mech Dyn Astron 125:133-160, 2016) (Paper I), we generalise the semianalytical model so that it applies to both prograde and retrograde orbits with a one to one map between the resonances in the two regimes. We propose the general form of the critical angle to be a linear combination of apsidal and nodal differences between the two orbits $ b_1 Δ\varpi + b_2 ΔΩ$, forming a collection of secular resonances in which the ones studied in Paper I are among the strongest. Test of the model in the…
Aims. 2015 BZ509 is the first asteroid confirmed to be in retrograde co-orbit resonance (or 1/-1 resonance) with the giant planets in the solar system. While Saturn is the only giant planet whose Trojans are not discovered until now, we identify some small bodies among Centaurs and Damocloids that are potentially in 1/-1 resonance with Saturn in the present study. Methods. We integrate numerically the motion of the 1000 clones (include the nominal orbit) of each Centaur whose orbit has a semi-major axis between 9.3 au and 9.8 au and an inclination i > 90 deg. To confirm and evaluate the 1/-1 r…
Resonance capture is studied numerically in the three-body problem for arbitrary inclinations. Massless particles are set to drift from outside the 1:5 resonance with a Jupiter-mass planet thereby encountering the web of the planet's diverse mean motion resonances. Randomly constructed samples explore parameter space for inclinations from 0 to 180 deg with 5deg increments totalling nearly 6x10^5 numerical simulations. Thirty resonances internal and external to the planet's location are monitored. We find that retrograde resonances are unexpectedly more efficient at capture than prograde resona…
We investigate the dynamics of a nonzero mass, circular orbit planet around an eccentric orbit binary for various values of the binary eccentricity, binary mass fraction, planet mass, and planet semi--major axis by means of numerical simulations. Previous studies investigated the secular dynamics mainly by approximate analytic methods. In the stationary inclination state, the planet and binary precess together with no change in relative tilt. For both prograde and retrograde planetary orbits, we explore the conditions for planetary orbital libration versus circulation and the conditions for st…
The giant planet atmospheres exhibit alternating prograde (eastward) and retrograde (westward) jets of different speeds and widths, with an equatorial jet that is prograde on Jupiter and Saturn and retrograde on Uranus and Neptune. The jets are variously thought to be driven by differential radiative heating of the upper atmosphere or by intrinsic heat fluxes emanating from the deep interior. But existing models cannot account for the different flow configurations on the giant planets in an energetically consistent manner. Here a three-dimensional general circulation model is used to show that…
We present high-precision radial velocity observations of WASP-17 throughout the transit of its close-in giant planet, using the MIKE spectrograph on the 6.5m Magellan Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. By modeling the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect, we find the sky-projected spin-orbit angle to be lambda = 167.4 \pm 11.2 deg. This independently confirms the previous finding that WASP-17b is on a retrograde orbit, suggesting it underwent migration via a mechanism other than just the gravitational interaction between the planet and the disk. Interestingly, our result for lambda differs by 45 \p…
Observations of exoplanets over the last two decades have revealed a new class of Jupiter-size planets with orbital periods of a few days, the so-called "hot Jupiters". Recent measurements using the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect have shown that many (~ 50%) of these planets are misaligned; furthermore, some (~ 15%) are even retrograde with respect to the stellar spin axis. Motivated by these observations, we explore the possibility of forming retrograde orbits in hierarchical triple configurations consisting of a star-planet inner pair with another giant planet, or brown dwarf, in a much wider or…
Asteroid (514107) 2015 BZ509 was discovered recently in Jupiter's co-orbital region with a retrograde motion around the Sun. The known chaotic dynamics of the outer Solar System have so far precluded the identification of its origin. Here, we perform a high-resolution statistical search for stable orbits and show that asteroid (514107) 2015 BZ509 has been in its current orbital state since the formation of the Solar System. This result indicates that (514107) 2015 BZ509 was captured from the interstellar medium 4.5 billion years in the past as planet formation models cannot produce such a prim…
Constructing dynamical maps from the filtered output of numerical integrations, we analyze the structure of the $ν_\odot$ secular resonance for fictitious irregular satellites in retrograde orbits. This commensurability is associated to the secular angle $θ= \varpi - \varpi_\odot$, where $\varpi$ is the longitude of pericenter of the satellite and $\varpi_\odot$ corresponds to the (fixed) planetocentric orbit of the Sun. Our study is performed in the restricted three-body problem, where the satellites are considered as massless particles around a massive planet and perturbed by the Sun. Depend…
We describe the families of periodic orbits in the 2-dimensional 1/2 retrograde resonance at mass ratio 0.001, analyzing their stability and bifurcations into 3-dimensional periodic orbits. We explain the role played by periodic orbits in adiabatic resonance capture, in particular how the proximity between a stable family and an unstable family with a nearly critical segment, associated with Kozai separatrices, determines the transition between distinct resonant modes observed in numerical simulations. Combining the identification of stable, critical and unstable periodic orbits with analytica…
We present observations of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect for two exoplanetary systems, revealing the orientations of their orbits relative to the rotation axes of their parent stars. HAT-P-4b is prograde, with a sky-projected spin-orbit angle of lambda = -4.9 +/- 11.9 degrees. In contrast, HAT-P-14b is retrograde, with lambda = 189.1 +/- 5.1 degrees. These results conform with a previously noted pattern among the stellar hosts of close-in giant planets: hotter stars have a wide range of obliquities and cooler stars have low obliquities. This, in turn, suggests that three-body dynamics and tid…
Among all the asteroid dynamical groups, Centaurs have the highest fraction of objects moving in retrograde orbits. The distribution in absolute magnitude, H, of known retrograde Centaurs with semi-major axes in the range 6-34 AU exhibits a remarkable trend: 10% have H < 10 mag, the rest have H > 12 mag. The largest objects, namely (342842) 2008 YB3, 2011 MM4 and 2013 LU28, move in almost polar, very eccentric paths; their nodal points are currently located near perihelion and aphelion. In the group of retrograde Centaurs, they are obvious outliers both in terms of dynamics and size. Here, we …
The aim of our study is to investigate the possibility of habitable moons orbiting the giant planet HD 23079b, a Jupiter-mass planet, which follows a low-eccentricity orbit in the outer region of HD 23079's habitable zone. We show that HD 23079b is able to host habitable moons in prograde and retrograde orbits, as expected, noting that the outer stability limit for retrograde orbits is increased by nearly 90% compared to that of prograde orbits, a result consistent with previous generalized studies. For the targeted parameter space it was found that the outer stability limit for habitable moon…
Over the course of the last decade, observations of highly-inclined (orbital inclination i > 60°) Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs) have posed an important challenge to current models of solar system formation (Levison et al. 2008; Nesvorný 2015). These remarkable minor planets necessitate the presence of a distant reservoir of strongly-out-of-plane TNOs, which itself requires some dynamical production mechanism (Gladman et al. 2009; Gomes et al. 2015; Batygin and Brown 2016). A notable recent addition to the census of high-i minor bodies in the solar system is the retrograde asteroid 514107 Ka'e…
The effect of radial drift rate on mean motion resonance capture is studied for prograde, polar and retrograde orbits. We employ the numerical framework of our earlier exploration of resonance capture at arbitrary inclination. Randomly constructed samples of massless particles are set to migrate radially from outside the orbit of a Jupiter-mass planet at different drift rates totalling more than $1.6\times 10^6$ numerical simulations. Slower drift rates reduce overall capture probability especially for prograde orbits and enhance capture at specific initial inclinations of high order resonance…

The single-lined spectroscopic binary $ν$ Octantis provided evidence of the first conjectured circumstellar planet demanding an orbit retrograde to the stellar orbits. The planet-like behaviour is now based on 1437 radial velocities (RVs) acquired from 2001 to 2013. $ν$ Oct's semimajor axis is only 2.6 AU with the candidate planet orbiting $ν$ Oct A about midway between. These details seriously challenge our understanding of planet formation and our decisive modelling of orbit reconfiguration and stability scenarios. However, all non-planetary explanations are also inconsistent with numerous q…
The measurement of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect for transiting exoplanets places constraints on the orientation of the orbital axis with respect to the stellar spin axis, which can shed light on the mechanisms shaping the orbital configuration of planetary systems. Here we present the interesting case of the Saturn-mass planet HAT-P-18b, which orbits one of the coolest stars for which the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect has been measured so far. We acquired a spectroscopic time-series, spanning a full transit, with the HARPS-N spectrograph mounted at the TNG telescope. The very precise radial vel…

HD 164604 c是一颗围绕K3.5矮星运行的巨行星,其轨道周期为15年,研究发现其与另一颗行星的互倾角约束及动态历史。
In this paper, we aim to characterize a transiting planetary candidate in the southern skies found in the combined MASCARA and bRing data sets of HD 85628, an A3V star of V = 8.2 mag at a distance 172 pc, to confirm its planetary nature. The candidate was originally detected in data obtained jointly with the MASCARA and bRing instruments using a BLS search for transit events. Further photometry was taken by the 0.7 m CHAT, and radial velocity measurements with FIDEOS on the ESO 1.0 m Telescope. High resolution spectra during a transit were taken with CHIRON on the SMARTS 1.5 m telescope to tar…
In Gayon & Bois (2008) and Gayon etal (2009), (i) we studied the theoretical feasibility and efficiency of retrograde mean motion resonances (i.e. two planets are both in orbital resonance and in counter-revolving configuration), (ii) we showed that retrograde resonances can generate interesting mechanisms of stability, and (iii) we obtained a dynamical fit involving a counter-revolving configuration that is consistent with the observations of the HD73526 planetary system. In the present paper, we present and analyze data reductions assuming counter-revolving configurations for eight compact m…
We show that the exoplanet HAT-P-7b has an extremely tilted orbit, with a true angle of at least 86 degrees with respect to its parent star's equatorial plane, and a strong possibility of retrograde motion. We also report evidence for an additional planet or companion star. The evidence for the unparalleled orbit and the third body is based on precise observations of the star's apparent radial velocity. The anomalous radial velocity due to rotation (the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect) was found to be a blueshift during the first half of the transit and a redshift during the second half, an inversi…
Most of the objects in the trans-Neptunian belt (TNb) and related populations move in prograde orbits with low eccentricity and inclination. However, the list of icy minor bodies moving in orbits with an inclination above 40 deg. has increased in recent years. The origin of these bodies, and in particular of those objects in retrograde orbits, is not well determined, and different scenarios are considered. In this paper, we present new observational and dynamical data of two objects in retrograde orbits, 2008 YB3 and 2005 VD. We find that the surface of these extreme objects is depleted of ice…
Recent studies have analyzed the dynamical evolution of outer small body populations under the effects of an eccentric inner massive perturber. Such outer reservoirs are composed of particles on prograde and retrograde orbits, as well as particles whose orbit flips from prograde to retrograde and back again showing a coupling between the inclination i and the ascending node longitude Ω(Type-F particles). We analyze the role of the General Relativity (GR) on the dynamics of outer particles under the influence of an inner eccentric Jupiter-mass planet produced by a planetary scattering event. In…
The process of capture in the coorbital region of a solar system planet is studied. Absolute capture likelihood in the 1:1 resonance is determined by randomly constructed statistical ensembles numbering $7.24\times 10^5$ of massless asteroids that are set to migrate radially from the outer to the inner boundaries of the coorbital region of a Jupiter-mass planet. Orbital states include coorbital capture, ejection, collisions with the Sun and the planet and free-crossing of the coorbital region. The relative efficiency of retrograde capture with respect to prograde capture is confirmed as an int…
In the framework of the planar and circular restricted three-body problem, we consider an asteroid that orbits the Sun in quasi-satellite motion with a planet. A quasi-satellite trajectory is a heliocentric orbit in co-orbital resonance with the planet, characterized by a non zero eccentricity and a resonant angle that librates around zero. Likewise, in the rotating frame with the planet it describes the same trajectory as the one of a retrograde satellite even though the planet acts as a perturbator. In the last few years, the discoveries of asteroids in this type of motion made the term "qua…
We present spectroscopic measurements of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect for the planet b of Kepler-9 multi-transiting planet system. The resulting sky-projected spin-orbit angle is $λ=-13^{\circ} \pm 16^{\circ}$, which favors an aligned system and strongly disfavors highly misaligned, polar, and retrograde orbits. Including Kepler-9, there are now a total of 4 Rossiter-McLaughlin effect measurements for multiplanet systems, all of which are consistent with spin-orbit alignment.
