We present the results of a high resolution optical spectroscopic study of nine white dwarf candidate members of Praesepe undertaken with the VLT and UVES. We find, contrary to a number of previous studies, that WD0836+201 (LB390, EG59) and WD0837+199 (LB393, EG61) are magnetic and non-magnetic white dwarfs respectively. Subsequently, we determine the radial velocities for the eight non-magnetic degenerates and provide compelling evidence that WD0837+185 is a radial velocity variable and possibly a double-degenerate system. We also find that our result for WD0837+218, in conjunction with its projected spatial location and position in initial mass-final mass space, argues it is more likely to be a field star than a cluster member. After eliminating these two white dwarfs, and WD0836+199 which has no clean SDSS photometry, we use the remaining 5 stars to substantiate modern theoretical mass-radius relations for white dwarfs. In light of our new results we re-examine the white dwarf members of Praesepe and use them to further constrain the initial mass-final mass relation. We find a a near monotonic IFMR, which can still be adequately represented by simple linear function with only one outlier which may have formed from a blue straggler star.
We have obtained a low-resolution optical spectrum for one of the faintest cluster member candidates in Praesepe with the Optical System for Imaging and low Resolution Integrated Spectroscopy mounted on the 10.4m Gran Telescopio de Canarias. We confirm spectroscopically the first L dwarf member in Praesepe, UGCS J084510.66+214817.1. We derived an optical spectral type of L0.3+/-0.4 and estimated its effective temperature to Teff=2279+/-371 K and a mass of 71.1+/-23.0M_Jup, according to state-of-the-art models, placing it at the hydrogen-burning boundary. We measured the equivalent width of the…
We have obtained near-IR photometry for the 11 Praesepe white dwarfs, to search for an excess indicative of a dusty debris disk. All the white dwarfs are in the DAZ temperature regime, however we find no indications of a disk around any white dwarf. We have, however determined that the radial velocity variable white dwarf WD0837+185 could have an unresolved T8 dwarf companion that would not be seen as a near-IR excess.
There is a striking and unexplained dearth of brown dwarf companions in close orbits (< 3AU) around stars more massive than the Sun, in stark contrast to the frequency of stellar and planetary companions. Although rare and relatively short-lived, these systems leave detectable evolutionary end points in the form of white dwarf - brown dwarf binaries and these remnants can offer unique insights into the births and deaths of their parent systems. We present the discovery of a close (orbital separation ~ 0.006 AU) substellar companion to a massive white dwarf member of the Praesepe star cluster. …
Rotation periods from Kepler K2 are combined with projected rotation velocities from the WIYN 3.5-m telescope, to determine projected radii for fast-rotating, low-mass ($0.15 \leq M/M_{\odot} \leq 0.6$) members of the Praesepe cluster. A maximum likelihood analysis that accounts for observational uncertainties, binarity and censored data, yields marginal evidence for radius inflation -- the average radius of these stars is $6\pm4$ per cent larger at a given luminosity than predicted by commonly-used evolutionary models. This over-radius is smaller (at 2-sigma confidence) than was found for sim…
[Abridged] In this paper, we present the results of a photometric survey to identify low mass and brown dwarf members of the old open cluster Praesepe (age of 590[+150][-120]Myr and distance of 190[+6.0][-5.8]pc) and use this to infer its mass function which we compare with that of other clusters. We have performed an optical (Ic-band) and near-infrared (J and Ks-band) photometric survey of Praesepe with a spatial coverage of 3.1deg^2. With 5sigma detection limits of Ic=23.4 and J=20.0, our survey is sensitive to objects with masses from about 0.6 to 0.05Msol. The mass function of Praesepe ris…
Within a 400 pc sphere around the Sun, we search for Praesepe's tidal tails in the Gaia DR2 dataset. We used a modified convergent-point method to search for stars with space velocities close to the space velocity of the Praesepe cluster. We find a clear indication for the existence of Praesepe's tidal tails, both extending up to 165~pc from the centre of the cluster. A total of 1393 stars populate the cluster and its tails, giving a total mass of 794 M_Sun. We determined a tidal radius of 10.77 pc for the cluster and a tidal mass of 483 M_Sun. The corresponding half-mass radius is 4.8 pc. We …
We analysed the wide-field near-infrared survey of the Praesepe cluster carried out by the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Galactic Clusters Survey (GCS) and released by the Data Release 9 (DR9). We compare our Praesepe mass function (MF) with the ones of the Pleiades, alpha Per, and the Hyades. We also present preliminary results of a spectroscopic follow-up for the low mass members (M=<0.1Msol) in Praesepe, alpha Per and Pleiades using the Optical System for Imaging and low Resolution Integrated Spectroscopy (OSIRIS) mounted on the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). We also presen…
We present the results of an abundance analysis of three G and two K dwarfs in the Praesepe open cluster based on high-resolution, moderate signal-to-noise-ratio spectra obtained with the ARC 3.5-m Telescope at Apache Point Observatory. Using a Principle Component Analysis and the BACCHUS automated spectral analysis code, we determined stellar parameters and abundances of up to 24 elements for each of our targets, which range in temperature from 6000 to 4600 K. The average derived iron abundance for the three G stars is 0.17+/-0.07 dex, consistent with the 0.12+/-0.04 dex derived by Boesgaard …
Presented are the results of a large and deep optical-near-infrared multi-epoch survey of the Praesepe open star cluster using data from the UKIDSS Galactic Clusters Survey. Multiple colour magnitude diagrams were used to select potential members and proper motions were used to assign levels of membership probability. From our sample, 145 objects were designated as high probability members (p >= 0.6) with most of these having been found by previous surveys although 14 new cluster members are also identified. Our membership assignment is restricted to the bright sample of objects (Z < 18). From…
Studies of the mass function (MF) of open clusters of different ages allow us to probe the efficiency with which brown dwarfs (BDs) are evaporated from clusters to populate the field. Surveys in old clusters (age > 100 Myr) do not suffer so severely from several problems encountered in young clusters, such as intra-cluster extinction and large uncertainties in BD models. Here we present the results of a deep photometric survey to study the MF of the old open cluster Praesepe (age 590 Myr and distance 190 pc), down to a 5 sigma detection limit at i~25.6 mag (~40M_Jup). We identify 62 cluster me…
Aims: Our scientific goal is to provide revised membership lists of the Alpha Per, Pleiades, and Praesepe clusters exploiting the second data release of Gaia and produce five-dimensional maps (ra, dec, parallax, pmRA, pmDEC) of these clusters. Methods: We implemented the kinematic method combined with the statistical treatment of parallaxes and proper motions to identify astrometric member candidates of three of the most nearby and best studied open clusters in the sky. Results: We cross-correlated the Gaia catalogue with large-scale public surveys to complement the astrometry of Gaia with mul…
Studies of the mass function (MF) of open clusters of different ages allow us to probe the efficiency with which brown dwarfs evaporate from clusters to populate the field. Surveys of older clusters (age >100 Myr) are not affected so severely by several problems encountered in young clusters, such as intra-cluster extinction and large uncertainties in brown dwarf models. We present the results of a deep photometric survey to study the MF of the central region of the old open cluster Praesepe (age~590$^{+150}_{-120}$ Myr, distance ~190$^{+6.0}_{-5.8}$ pc), down to the substellar regime. We perf…
We present the results from a systematic study of temporal variation of stellar activity in young late-type stars. We used multi-epoch LAMOST low-resolution spectra of over 300 member candidates in three young open clusters: Pleiades, Praesepe, and Hyades. The spectral measurements of TiO band strength near 7050 Å (TiO2) and equivalent width of Hα line (EW Hα ) are used as the tracers of cool-spot coverage and chromospheric emission strength, respectively. The analysis of time-variation patterns of these two tracers suggested there exist detectable variabilities in TiO2 and EW Hα , and their t…
WIYN/Hydra spectroscopy (at R~15,000) of the moderately metal-rich Praesepe and Hyades open clusters was used to study their main sequence (MS) iron ([Fe/H]) and lithium (A(Li)) abundances. Self-consistent [Fe/H] and Li analyses of these clusters of consistent age, which we re-evaluate, confirms they have consistent [Fe/H] and provides a foundation to investigate the poorly understood G-dwarf and F-dwarf Li-depletions. Neither phenomenon agrees with standard stellar evolution theory, but possible explanations abound. We supplement our A(Li) with previously published results placed on a uniform…
X-ray observations of low-mass stars in open clusters are critical to understanding the dependence of magnetic activity on stellar properties and their evolution. Praesepe and the Hyades, two of the nearest, most-studied open clusters, are among the best available laboratories for examining the dependence of magnetic activity on rotation for stars with masses lower than $\approx 1\ M_{\odot}$. We present an updated study of the rotation X-ray activity relation in the two clusters. We updated membership catalogs that combine pre-Gaia catalogs with new catalogs based on Gaia Data Release 2. The …
We analyze {\it K2} light curves for 794 low-mass ($1 > M_* > 0.1$ $M_{\odot}$) members of the $\approx$650-Myr-old open cluster Praesepe, and measure rotation periods ($P_{rot}$) for 677 of these stars. We find that half of the rapidly rotating $>$0.3 $M_{\odot}$ stars are confirmed or candidate binary systems. The remaining $>0.3$ $M_{\odot}$ fast rotators have not been searched for companions, and are therefore not confirmed single stars. We found previously that nearly all rapidly rotating $>$0.3 $M_{\odot}$ stars in the Hyades are binaries, but we require deeper binary searches in Praesep…
We present the discovery of four low-mass ($M<0.6$ $M_\odot$) eclipsing binary (EB) systems in the sub-Gyr old Praesepe open cluster using Kepler/K2 time-series photometry and Keck/HIRES spectroscopy. We present a new Gaussian process eclipsing binary model, GP-EBOP, as well as a method of simultaneously determining effective temperatures and distances for EBs. Three of the reported systems (AD 3814, AD 2615 and AD 1508) are detached and double-lined, and precise solutions are presented for the first two. We determine masses and radii to 1-3% precision for AD 3814 and to 5-6% for AD 2615. Toge…
Star clusters have long been used to illuminate both stellar evolution and Galactic evolution. They also hold clues to the chemical and nucleosynthetic processes throughout the history of the Galaxy. We have taken high signal-to-noise, high-resolution spectra of 11 solar-type stars in the Praesepe open cluster to determine the chemical abundances of 16 elements: Li, C, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Ni, Y, and Ba. We have determined Fe from Fe I and Fe II lines and find [Fe/H] = +0.12 $\pm$0.04. We find that Li decreases with temperature due to increasing Li depletion in cooler star…
Flares, energetic eruptions on the surfaces of stars, are an unmistakable manifestation of magnetically driven emission. Their occurrence rates and energy distributions trace stellar characteristics such as mass and age. But before flares can be used to constrain stellar properties, the flaring-age-mass relation requires proper calibration. This work sets out to quantify flaring activity of independently age-dated main sequence stars for a broad range of spectral types using optical light curves obtained by the Kepler satellite. Drawing from the complete K2 archive, we searched 3435 $\sim 80$ …
We present a coherent and detailed Monte Carlo simulation of the population of hot white dwarfs. We assess the statistical significance of the hot end of the white dwarf luminosity function and the role played by the bolometric corrections of hydrogen-rich white dwarfs at high effective temperatures. We use the most up-to-date stellar evolutionary models and implement a full description of the observational selection biases to obtain realistic simulations of the observed white dwarf population. Our theoretical results are compared with the luminosity function of hot white dwarfs obtained from …
The contribution of white dwarfs of the different Galactic populations to the stellar content of our Galaxy is only poorly known. Some authors claim a vast population of halo white dwarfs, which would be in accordance with some investigations of the early phases of Galaxy formation claiming a top-heavy initial-mass-function. Here, I present a model of the population of white dwarfs in the Milky Way based on observations of the local white dwarf sample and a standard model of Galactic structure. This model will be used to estimate the space densities of thin disc, thick disc and halo white dwar…
We present a detailed Monte Carlo simulation of the population of the hot branch of the white dwarf luminosity function. We used the most up-to-date stellar evolutionary models and we implemented a full description of the observational selection biases. Our theoretical results are compared with the luminosity function of hot white dwarfs obtained from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), for both DA and non-DA white dwarfs. For non-DA white dwarfs we find an excellent agreement with the observational data, while for DA white dwarfs our simulations show some discrepancies with the observations …
We searched through the entire Gaia EDR3 candidate white dwarf catalogue for stars with proper motions and positions that are consistent with the stars having escaped from the Alpha Persei cluster within the past 81~Myr, the age of the cluster. In this search we found five candidate white dwarf escapees from Alpha Persei and obtained spectra for all five. We confirm that three are massive white dwarfs sufficiently young to have originated in the cluster. All three are more massive than any white dwarf previously associated with a cluster using Gaia astrometry, and possess some of the most mass…
Context. Globular clusters host stars with chemical peculiarities. The associated helium enrichment is expected to affect the evolution of stars, in general, and of low-mass stars, and in particular the progenitors of white dwarfs (WDs). Aims. We investigate the effects of different initial helium contents on the properties of white dwarfs such as their masses, compositions, and the time since their formation. Results. In a globular cluster at a given age, the He enrichment implies lower initial masses for stars at a given phase. Thus it leads to a decrease of the masses of white dwarfs reachi…
We estimate the merger rate of double degenerate binaries containing extremely low mass (ELM) <0.3 Msun white dwarfs in the Galaxy. Such white dwarfs are detectable for timescales of 0.1 Gyr -- 1 Gyr in the ELM Survey; the binaries they reside in have gravitational wave merger times of 0.001 Gyr -- 100 Gyr. To explain the observed distribution requires that most ELM white dwarf binary progenitors detach from the common envelope phase with <1 hr orbital periods. We calculate the local space density of ELM white dwarf binaries and estimate a merger rate of 3e-3/yr over the entire disk of the Mil…
We present follow-up spectroscopy of 711 white dwarfs within 100 pc, and present a detailed model atmosphere analysis of the 100 pc white dwarf sample in the SDSS footprint. Our spectroscopic follow-up is complete for 83% of the white dwarfs hotter than 6000 K, where the atmospheric composition can be constrained reliably. We identify 1508 DA white dwarfs with pure hydrogen atmospheres. The DA mass distribution has an extremely narrow peak at $0.59~M_{\odot}$, and reveals a shoulder from relatively massive white dwarfs with $M=0.7$-$0.9~M_{\odot}$. Comparing this distribution with binary popul…

Stellar rotation was proposed as a potential age diagnostic that is precise, simple, and applicable to a broad range of low-mass stars ($\leq$1 $M_\odot$). Unfortunately, rotation period $(P_{\rm rot})$ measurements of low-mass members of open clusters have undermined the idea that stars spin down with a common age dependence (i.e., $P_{\rm rot} \propto \sqrt{\rm age}$): K dwarfs appear to spin down more slowly than F and G dwarfs. Agüeros et al. (2018) interpreted data for the $\approx$1.4-Gyr-old cluster NGC 752 differently, proposing that after having converged onto a slow-rotating sequence…
We have analysed K2 light curves for more than 3,000 low mass stars in the $\sim$8 Myr old Upper Sco association, the $\sim$125 Myr age Pleiades open cluster and the $\sim$700 Myr old Hyades and Praesepe open clusters to determine stellar rotation rates. Many of these K2 targets show two distinct periods, and for the lowest mass stars in these clusters virtually all of these systems with two periods are photometric binaries. The most likely explanation is that we are detecting the rotation periods for both components of these binaries. We explore the evolution of the rotation rate in both comp…
We present the results of a study to discover prospective new white dwarf-L dwarf binaries as identified by their near-infrared excesses in the UKIDSS catalogue. We obtained optical spectra to validate the white dwarf nature for 22 of the candidate primary stars, confirming ten as white dwarfs and determining their effective temperatures and gravities. For all ten white dwarfs we determined that the near-infrared excess was indeed indicative of a cool companion. Six of these are suggestive of late M dwarf companions, and three are candidate L dwarf companions, with one straddling the M$-$L bou…
Studies of excess infrared radiation around white dwarfs provide important constraints on the evolution of planetary systems and low-mass stars beyond the main sequence stage. In this paper series, we focus on identifying and characterizing bright white dwarfs with an infrared excess. Here, we present 188 infrared excess candidates from Gaia and unWISE, 147 of which are new discoveries. Further characterization of this sample can significantly increase the current list of white dwarf debris disks and white dwarfs with low-mass companions.
It is not known how single white dwarfs with masses less than 0.5Msolar -- low-mass white dwarfs -- are formed. One way in which such a white dwarf might be formed is after the merger of a helium-core white dwarf with a main-sequence star that produces a red giant branch star and fails to ignite helium. We use a stellar-evolution code to compute models of the remnants of these mergers and find a relation between the pre-merger masses and the final white dwarf mass. Combining our results with a model population, we predict that the mass distribution of single low-mass white dwarfs formed throug…
The article covers the physical properties and evolution of single white dwarfs ranging in temperature from 20,000K to 200,000 and higher, the hottest know electron-degenerate stars. After discussing the classification of their spectra, the author reviews the known properties, parameters, evolutionary state, as well as persisting and new puzzles regarding all spectroscopic subclasses of hot white dwarfs: the hot DA white dwarfs, the DAO white dwarfs, the PG1159 degenerates, the DO white dwarfs, the DB white dwarfs, the DBA white dwarfs, and the Hot DQ white dwarfs (an entirely new class). The …
The origin of strong magnetic fields in white dwarfs has been a puzzle for decades. Recently, a dynamo mechanism operating in rapidly rotating and crystallizing white dwarfs has been suggested to explain the occurrence rates of strong magnetic fields in white dwarfs with close low-mass main sequence star companions. Here we investigate whether the same mechanism may produce strong magnetic fields in close double white dwarfs. The only known strongly magnetic white dwarf that is part of a close double white dwarf system, the magnetic component of NLTT 12758, is rapidly rotating and likely cryst…
The presence and strength of a stellar magnetic field and activity is rooted in a star's fundamental parameters such as mass and age. Can flares serve as an accurate stellar "clock"? To explore if we can quantify an activity-age relation in the form of a flaring-age relation, we measured trends in the flaring rates and energies for stars with different masses and ages. We investigated the time-domain photometry provided by Kepler's follow-up mission K2 and searched for flares in three solar metallicity open clusters with well-known ages, M45 (0.125 Gyr), M44 (0.63 Gyr), and M67 (4.3 Gyr). We u…
The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) survey of helium-rich hot subdwarfs aims to explore evolutionary pathways amongst groups of highly-evolved stars. The selection criteria mean that several hot white dwarfs and related objects have also been included. This paper reports the discovery and analysis of eight new very hot white dwarf and pre-white dwarf stars with effective temperatures exceeding 100,000 K. They include two PG1159 stars, one DO white dwarf, three O(He) and two O(H) stars. One of the O(H) stars is the central star of a newly-discovered planetary nebula, the other is the ho…
We report the discovery of 9 089 new spectroscopically confirmed white dwarfs and subdwarfs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 10. We obtain Teff, log g and mass for hydrogen atmosphere white dwarf stars (DAs) and helium atmosphere white dwarf stars (DBs), and estimate the calcium/helium abundances for the white dwarf stars with metallic lines (DZs) and carbon/helium for carbon dominated spectra DQs. We found 1 central star of a planetary nebula, 2 new oxygen spectra on helium atmosphere white dwarfs, 71 DQs, 42 hot DO/PG1159s, 171 white dwarf+main sequence star binaries, 206 magneti…
We identify Gaia0007-1605AC as the first inner brown dwarf-white dwarf binary of a hierarchical triple system in which the outer component is another white dwarf (Gaia0007-1605B). From optical/near-infrared spectroscopy obtained at the Very Large Telescope with the X-Shooter instrument and/or from Gaia photometry plus SED fitting, we determine the effective temperatures and masses of the two white dwarfs (12018+-68 K, 0.54+-0.01 Msun for Gaia0007-1605A and 4445+-116 K, 0.56+-0.05 Msun for Gaia0007-1605B) and the effective temperature of the brown dwarf (1850+-50 K; corresponding to a spectral …
The spectral distribution of field white dwarfs shows a feature called the "non-DA gap". As defined by Bergeron et al., this is a temperature range (5100K--6100K) where relatively few non-DA stars are found, even though such stars are abundant on either side of the gap. It is usually viewed as an indication that a significant fraction of white dwarfs switch their atmospheric compositions back and forth between hydrogen-rich and helium-rich as they cool. In this paper, we present a Monte Carlo model of the Galactic disk white dwarf population, based on the spectral evolution model of Chen and H…
White dwarf stars are the final stage of most stars, born single or in multiple systems. We discuss the identification, magnetic fields, and mass distribution for white dwarfs detected from spectra obtained by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey up to Data Release 13 in 2016, which lead to the increase in the number of spectroscopically identified white dwarf stars from 5000 to 39000. This number includes only white dwarf stars with log g >= 6.5 stars, i.e., excluding the Extremely Low Mass white dwarfs, which are necessarily the byproduct of stellar interaction.
The origin of magnetic fields in white dwarfs remains a fundamental unresolved problem in stellar astrophysics. In particular, the very different fractions of strongly (exceeding 1 MG) magnetic white dwarfs in evolutionarily linked populations of close white dwarf binary stars cannot be reproduced by any scenario suggested so far. Strongly magnetic white dwarfs are absent among detached white dwarf binary stars that are younger than approximately 1 Gyr. In contrast, in semi-detached cataclysmic variables in which the white dwarf accretes from a low-mass star companion, more than one third host…
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey has allowed us to increase the number of known white dwarfs by a factor of five and consequently the number of known pulsating white dwarfs also by a factor of five. It has also led to the discovery of new types of variable white dwarfs, as the variable hot DQs, and the pulsating Extremely Low Mass white dwarfs. With the Kepler Mission, it has been possible to discover new phenomena, the outbursts present in a few pulsating white dwarfs.
The emission of the white dwarf-M dwarf binary AR Sco is driven by the rapid synchronization of its white dwarf, rather than by accretion. This requires a comparatively large magnetic field $\sim 100$ gauss at the M dwarf and $\sim 10^8$ gauss on the white dwarf, larger than the fields of most intermediate polars but within the range of fields of known magnetic white dwarfs. The spindown power is dissipated in the atmosphere of the M dwarf by magnetic reconnection, accelerating particles that produce the observed synchrotron radiation. The displacement of the optical maximum from conjunction m…
We consider the effects of rotation and temperature on the structure of white dwarfs in order to compare them with the estimated data from observations.
We present the first white dwarf mass distributions of a large and homogeneous sample of post-common envelope binaries (PCEBs) and wide white dwarf-main sequence binaries (WDMS) directly obtained from observations. Both distributions are statistically independent, with PCEBs showing a clear concentration of systems towards the low-mass end of the distribution, and the white dwarf mass distribution of wide WDMS binaries being similar to those of single white dwarfs. Our results provide evidence that the majority of low-mass (Mwd < 0.5Msun) white dwarfs are formed in close binaries.
The ESO Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey (SPY) took high-resolution spectra of more than 1000 white dwarfs and pre-white dwarfs. About two thirds of the stars observed are hydrogen-dominated DA white dwarfs. Here we present a catalog and detailed spectroscopic analysis of the DA stars in the SPY. Atmospheric parameters effective temperature and surface gravity are determined for normal DAs. Double-degenerate binaries, DAs with magnetic fields or dM companions, are classified and discussed. The spectra are compared with theoretical model atmospheres using a chi^2 fitting technique. Our final samp…
The number of spatially unresolved white dwarf plus main-sequence star binaries has increased rapidly in the last decade, jumping from only ~30 in 2003 to over 3000. However, in the majority of known systems the companion to the white dwarf is a low mass M dwarf, since these are relatively easy to identify from optical colours and spectra. White dwarfs with more massive FGK type companions have remained elusive due to the large difference in optical brightness between the two stars. In this paper we identify 934 main-sequence FGK stars from the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) survey in the s…
By introducing a simplified transport model of outer layers of white dwarfs we derive an analytical semi-empirical relation which constrains effective temperature-mass-radius for white dwarfs. This relation is used to classify recent data of white dwarfs according to their time evolution in non-accretion process of cooling. This formula permit us to study the population map of white dwarfs in the central temperature and mass plane, and discuss the relation with the ignition temperature for C-O material. Our effective temperature-mass-radius relation provide a quick method to estimate the mass …
It has long been suspected that metal polluted white dwarfs (types DAZ, DBZ, and DZ) and white dwarfs with dusty disks possess planetary systems, but a specific physical mechanism by which planetesimals are perturbed close to a white dwarf has not yet been fully posited. In this paper we demonstrate that mass loss from a central star during post main sequence evolution can sweep planetesimals into interior mean motion resonances with a single giant planet. These planetesimals are slowly removed through chaotic excursions of eccentricity that in time create radial orbits capable of tidally disr…
We report the discovery of 6576 new spectroscopically confirmed white dwarf and subdwarf stars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12. We obtain Teff, log g and mass for hydrogen atmosphere white dwarf stars (DAs) and helium atmosphere white dwarf stars (DBs), estimate the calcium/helium abundances for the white dwarf stars with metallic lines (DZs) and carbon/helium for carbon dominated spectra DQs. We found one central star of a planetary nebula, one ultra-compact helium binary (AM CVn), one oxygen line dominated white dwarf, 15 hot DO/PG1159s, 12 new cataclysmic variables, 36 magne…
Observations of white dwarfs in the globular clusters NGC 6397 and Omega Centauri indicate that these stars may get a velocity kick during their time as giants. If the mass loss while on the asymptotic giant branch is slightly asymmetric, the resulting white dwarf could be born with such a velocity kick. These energetic white dwarfs will impart their excess energy on other stars as they travel through the cluster. A Monte-Carlo simulation of the white-dwarfs kicks combined with estimate of the phase-space diffusion of the white dwarfs reveals that as the white dwarfs equilibrate, they lose mos…
Recently, a class of Roche-lobe-filling binary systems consisting of hot subdwarf stars and white dwarfs with sub-hour periods has been discovered. At present, the hot subdwarf is in a shell He burning phase and is transferring some of its remaining thin H envelope to its white dwarf companion. As the evolution of the hot subdwarf continues, it is expected to detach, leaving behind a low mass C/O core white dwarf secondary with a thick He layer. Then, on a timescale of $\sim 10$ Myr, gravitational wave radiation will again bring the systems into contact. If the mass transfer is unstable and re…
Spectroscopically identified white dwarfs from the SDSS data release 1 are matched against SDSS data release 1 proper motion survey in the search for common proper motion companions
