We have obtained a low-resolution optical spectrum for one of the faintest cluster member candidates in Praesepe with the Optical System for Imaging and low Resolution Integrated Spectroscopy mounted on the 10.4m Gran Telescopio de Canarias. We confirm spectroscopically the first L dwarf member in Praesepe, UGCS J084510.66+214817.1. We derived an optical spectral type of L0.3+/-0.4 and estimated its effective temperature to Teff=2279+/-371 K and a mass of 71.1+/-23.0M_Jup, according to state-of-the-art models, placing it at the hydrogen-burning boundary. We measured the equivalent width of the gravity-sensitive sodium doublet at 8182/8194 A, which adds credit to the membership of this new L dwarf to Praesepe. We also derived a probability of ~20.5% that our candidate would be a field L0 dwarf. We conclude that this object is likely to be a true member of Praesepe, with evidence of being a binary system.
We have obtained near-IR photometry for the 11 Praesepe white dwarfs, to search for an excess indicative of a dusty debris disk. All the white dwarfs are in the DAZ temperature regime, however we find no indications of a disk around any white dwarf. We have, however determined that the radial velocity variable white dwarf WD0837+185 could have an unresolved T8 dwarf companion that would not be seen as a near-IR excess.
There is a striking and unexplained dearth of brown dwarf companions in close orbits (< 3AU) around stars more massive than the Sun, in stark contrast to the frequency of stellar and planetary companions. Although rare and relatively short-lived, these systems leave detectable evolutionary end points in the form of white dwarf - brown dwarf binaries and these remnants can offer unique insights into the births and deaths of their parent systems. We present the discovery of a close (orbital separation ~ 0.006 AU) substellar companion to a massive white dwarf member of the Praesepe star cluster. …
Rotation periods from Kepler K2 are combined with projected rotation velocities from the WIYN 3.5-m telescope, to determine projected radii for fast-rotating, low-mass ($0.15 \leq M/M_{\odot} \leq 0.6$) members of the Praesepe cluster. A maximum likelihood analysis that accounts for observational uncertainties, binarity and censored data, yields marginal evidence for radius inflation -- the average radius of these stars is $6\pm4$ per cent larger at a given luminosity than predicted by commonly-used evolutionary models. This over-radius is smaller (at 2-sigma confidence) than was found for sim…
[Abridged] In this paper, we present the results of a photometric survey to identify low mass and brown dwarf members of the old open cluster Praesepe (age of 590[+150][-120]Myr and distance of 190[+6.0][-5.8]pc) and use this to infer its mass function which we compare with that of other clusters. We have performed an optical (Ic-band) and near-infrared (J and Ks-band) photometric survey of Praesepe with a spatial coverage of 3.1deg^2. With 5sigma detection limits of Ic=23.4 and J=20.0, our survey is sensitive to objects with masses from about 0.6 to 0.05Msol. The mass function of Praesepe ris…
We present the results of a high resolution optical spectroscopic study of nine white dwarf candidate members of Praesepe undertaken with the VLT and UVES. We find, contrary to a number of previous studies, that WD0836+201 (LB390, EG59) and WD0837+199 (LB393, EG61) are magnetic and non-magnetic white dwarfs respectively. Subsequently, we determine the radial velocities for the eight non-magnetic degenerates and provide compelling evidence that WD0837+185 is a radial velocity variable and possibly a double-degenerate system. We also find that our result for WD0837+218, in conjunction with its p…
We present the results of an abundance analysis of three G and two K dwarfs in the Praesepe open cluster based on high-resolution, moderate signal-to-noise-ratio spectra obtained with the ARC 3.5-m Telescope at Apache Point Observatory. Using a Principle Component Analysis and the BACCHUS automated spectral analysis code, we determined stellar parameters and abundances of up to 24 elements for each of our targets, which range in temperature from 6000 to 4600 K. The average derived iron abundance for the three G stars is 0.17+/-0.07 dex, consistent with the 0.12+/-0.04 dex derived by Boesgaard …
Presented are the results of a large and deep optical-near-infrared multi-epoch survey of the Praesepe open star cluster using data from the UKIDSS Galactic Clusters Survey. Multiple colour magnitude diagrams were used to select potential members and proper motions were used to assign levels of membership probability. From our sample, 145 objects were designated as high probability members (p >= 0.6) with most of these having been found by previous surveys although 14 new cluster members are also identified. Our membership assignment is restricted to the bright sample of objects (Z < 18). From…
Studies of the mass function (MF) of open clusters of different ages allow us to probe the efficiency with which brown dwarfs (BDs) are evaporated from clusters to populate the field. Surveys in old clusters (age > 100 Myr) do not suffer so severely from several problems encountered in young clusters, such as intra-cluster extinction and large uncertainties in BD models. Here we present the results of a deep photometric survey to study the MF of the old open cluster Praesepe (age 590 Myr and distance 190 pc), down to a 5 sigma detection limit at i~25.6 mag (~40M_Jup). We identify 62 cluster me…
Studies of the mass function (MF) of open clusters of different ages allow us to probe the efficiency with which brown dwarfs evaporate from clusters to populate the field. Surveys of older clusters (age >100 Myr) are not affected so severely by several problems encountered in young clusters, such as intra-cluster extinction and large uncertainties in brown dwarf models. We present the results of a deep photometric survey to study the MF of the central region of the old open cluster Praesepe (age~590$^{+150}_{-120}$ Myr, distance ~190$^{+6.0}_{-5.8}$ pc), down to the substellar regime. We have obtained low and medium resolution spectra of 9 brown dwarf candidate members of Coma Berenices and the Hyades using SpEX on the NASA InfaRed Telescope Facility and LIRIS on the William Herschel Telescope. We conclude that 7 of these objects are indeed late M or early L dwarfs, and that two are likely members of Coma Berenices, and four of the Hyades. Two objects, cbd40 and Hy3 are suggested to be a field L dwarfs, although there is also a possibility that Hy3 is an unresolved binary belonging to the cluster. These objects have masses between 71 and 53 M$_{\rm Jup}$, close to the hydro…
We present the discovery of four low-mass ($M<0.6$ $M_\odot$) eclipsing binary (EB) systems in the sub-Gyr old Praesepe open cluster using Kepler/K2 time-series photometry and Keck/HIRES spectroscopy. We present a new Gaussian process eclipsing binary model, GP-EBOP, as well as a method of simultaneously determining effective temperatures and distances for EBs. Three of the reported systems (AD 3814, AD 2615 and AD 1508) are detached and double-lined, and precise solutions are presented for the first two. We determine masses and radii to 1-3% precision for AD 3814 and to 5-6% for AD 2615. Toge…
We present a catalog of GALEX Near-UV (NUV) and Far-UV (FUV) photometry for the Palomar/MSU and SDSS DR7 spectroscopic M dwarf catalogs. The catalog contains NUV measurements matched to 577 spectroscopically confirmed M dwarfs and FUV measurements matched to 150 spectroscopically confirmed M dwarfs. Using these data, we find that NUV and FUV luminosities strongly correlate with Hα emission, a typical indicator of magnetic activity in M dwarfs. We also examine the fraction of M dwarfs with varying degrees of strong line emission at NUV wavelengths. Our results indicate that the frequency of M d…
Stellar rotation was proposed as a potential age diagnostic that is precise, simple, and applicable to a broad range of low-mass stars ($\leq$1 $M_\odot$). Unfortunately, rotation period $(P_{\rm rot})$ measurements of low-mass members of open clusters have undermined the idea that stars spin down with a common age dependence (i.e., $P_{\rm rot} \propto \sqrt{\rm age}$): K dwarfs appear to spin down more slowly than F and G dwarfs. Agüeros et al. (2018) interpreted data for the $\approx$1.4-Gyr-old cluster NGC 752 differently, proposing that after having converged onto a slow-rotating sequence…
We have analysed K2 light curves for more than 3,000 low mass stars in the $\sim$8 Myr old Upper Sco association, the $\sim$125 Myr age Pleiades open cluster and the $\sim$700 Myr old Hyades and Praesepe open clusters to determine stellar rotation rates. Many of these K2 targets show two distinct periods, and for the lowest mass stars in these clusters virtually all of these systems with two periods are photometric binaries. The most likely explanation is that we are detecting the rotation periods for both components of these binaries. We explore the evolution of the rotation rate in both comp…

Spectroscopically identified white dwarfs from the SDSS data release 1 are matched against SDSS data release 1 proper motion survey in the search for common proper motion companions
Aims: Our scientific goal is to provide revised membership lists of the Alpha Per, Pleiades, and Praesepe clusters exploiting the second data release of Gaia and produce five-dimensional maps (ra, dec, parallax, pmRA, pmDEC) of these clusters. Methods: We implemented the kinematic method combined with the statistical treatment of parallaxes and proper motions to identify astrometric member candidates of three of the most nearby and best studied open clusters in the sky. Results: We cross-correlated the Gaia catalogue with large-scale public surveys to complement the astrometry of Gaia with mul…
A sample of Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) is presented including spectroscopically identified 380 spectra of 245 objects, of which 58 CV candidates are new discoveries. The BaggingTopPush and the Random Forest algorithms are applied to the Fifth Data Release (DR5) of LAMOST to retrieve CVs with strong emission lines and with broad absorption lines respectively. Based on spectroscopic classification, 134 dwarf novae, 41 nova-like variables and 19 magnetic CVs are identified from the sample. In addition, 89 high--inclination systems and 33 CVs showing companion stars are recognized and discussed f…
X-ray observations of low-mass stars in open clusters are critical to understanding the dependence of magnetic activity on stellar properties and their evolution. Praesepe and the Hyades, two of the nearest, most-studied open clusters, are among the best available laboratories for examining the dependence of magnetic activity on rotation for stars with masses lower than $\approx 1\ M_{\odot}$. We present an updated study of the rotation X-ray activity relation in the two clusters. We updated membership catalogs that combine pre-Gaia catalogs with new catalogs based on Gaia Data Release 2. The …
We present spectroscopic follow-up observations of 68 red, faint candidates from our multi-epoch, multi-wavelength, previously published survey of NGC 2264. Using near-infrared spectra from VLT/KMOS, we measure spectral types and extinction for 32 young low-mass sources. We confirm 13 as brown dwarfs in NGC 2264, with spectral types between M6 and M8, corresponding to masses between 0.02 and 0.08$M_{\odot}$. These are the first spectroscopically confirmed brown dwarfs in this benchmark cluster. 19 more objects are found to be young M-type stars of NGC 2264 with masses of 0.08 to 0.3$\,M_{\odot…
Our aim is to compile a catalog of white dwarfs within 40 parsecs of the Sun, in which newly discovered objects would significantly increase the completeness of the current census. White dwarf candidates are identified from the SUPERBLINK proper motion database (Lepine & Shara 2005), which allows us to investigate stars down to a proper motion limit as low as 40 mas yr-1. The selection criteria and distance estimates are based on a combination of color-magnitude and reduced proper motion diagrams. Candidates with distances less than 50 parsecs are selected for spectroscopic follow-up. We prese…
We present an analysis of K2 light curves (LCs) for candidate members of the young Upper Sco (USco) association $\sim$8 Myr) and the neighboring Rho Oph embedded cluster ($\sim$1 Myr). We establish $\sim$1300 stars as probable members, $\sim$80\% of which are periodic. The phased LCs have a variety of shapes which can be attributed to physical causes ranging from stellar pulsation and stellar rotation to disk-related phenomena. We identify and discuss a number of observed behaviors. The periods are $\sim$0.2-30 days with a peak near 2 days and the rapid period end nearing break-up velocity. M …
Many stellar models present difficulties in reproducing basic observational relations of very low mass stars (VLMS), including the mass--radius relation and the optical colour--magnitudes of cool dwarfs. Here, we improve PARSEC models on these points. We implement the T--tau relations from PHOENIX BT-Settl model atmospheres as the outer boundary conditions in the PARSEC code, finding that this change alone reduces the discrepancy in the mass--radius relation from 8 to 5 per cent. We compare the models with multi--band photometry of clusters Praesepe and M67, showing that the use of T--tau rela…
Context. The second Gaia data release (Gaia DR2) contains high precision positions, parallaxes and proper motions for 1.3 billion sources. The resulting Hertzsprung-Russel diagram reveals fine structures all over the mass range. Aims. This paper aims to investigate the content of Gaia DR2 at the low-mass end and to characterize ultra-cool and brown dwarfs. Methods. We first retrieve the sample of spectroscopically confirmed ultra-cool and brown dwarfs in Gaia DR2. We use their locus in the precise Hertzsprung-Russel diagram to select new candidates, and to investigate their properties. Results…
We present an overview of the sample of northern hemisphere white dwarfs within 40 pc of the Sun detected from $Gaia$ Data Release 2 (DR2). We find that 521 sources are spectroscopically confirmed degenerate stars, 111 of which were first identified as white dwarf candidates from $Gaia$ DR2 and followed-up recently with the William Herschel Telescope and Gran Telescopio Canarias. Three additional white dwarf candidates remain spectroscopically unobserved and six unresolved binaries are known to include a white dwarf but were not in our initial selection of white dwarfs in the $Gaia$ DR2 Hertzs…
Recent observations of the low-mass rotation distributions of the Pleiades and Praesepe clusters have revealed a ubiquitous correlation between mass and rotation, such that late M dwarfs rotate an order-of-magnitude faster than early M dwarfs. In this paper, we demonstrate that this mass-rotation correlation is present in the 10 Myr Upper Scorpius association, as revealed by new ${\it K2}$ rotation measurements. Using rotational evolution models we show that the low-mass ($0.1-0.6 M_{\odot}$) rotation distribution of the 125 Myr Pleiades cluster can only be produced if it hosted an equally str…
We cross-matched 1.3 million white dwarf (WD) candidates from Gaia EDR3 with spectral data from LAMOST DR7 within 3 arcsec. Applying machine learning described in our previous work, we spectroscopically identified 6,190 WD objects after visual inspection, among which 1,496 targets were firstly confirmed. 32 detailed classes were adopted for them, including but not limited to DAB and DB+M. We estimated the atmospheric parameters for the DA and DB type WD using Levenberg-Marquardt least-squares algorithm (LM). Finally, a catalog of WD spectra from LAMOST was provided online.
We report two nearby high proper motion dwarfs of special interest identified using the Preliminary Data Release of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS). WISEP J191239.91-361516.4 has a motion of 2.1 arcseconds per year. Photometry identifies it as a mid-M dwarf. WISEP J190648.47+401106.8 is a spectroscopically confirmed L1 dwarf in the Kepler Mission field with a motion of 0.48 arcseconds per year. The estimated distance is 17 parsecs. Both lie at relatively low galactic latitudes and demonstrate the possibility of discovering proper motion …

We present optical spectra of 144 white dwarfs detected in the Montreal-Cambridge-Tololo (MCT) colorimetric survey, including 120 DA, 12 DB, 4 DO, 1 DQ, and 7 DC stars. We also perform a model atmosphere analysis of all objects in our sample using the so-called spectroscopic technique, or the photometric technique in the case of DC white dwarfs. The main objective of this paper is to contribute to the ongoing effort of confirming spectroscopically all white dwarf candidates in the Gaia survey, in particular in the southern hemisphere. All our spectra are made available in the Montreal White Dw…
We present a spectroscopically identified catalogue of 72 DA white dwarfs from the LAMOST pilot survey. 35 are found to be new identifications after cross-correlation with the Eisenstein et al. and Villanova catalogues. The effective temperature and gravity of these white dwarfs are estimated by Balmer lines fitting. Most of them are hot white dwarfs. The cooling times and masses of these white dwarfs are estimated by interpolation in theoretical evolution tracks. The peak of mass distribution is found to be $\sim$ 0.6 $M_\odot$ which is consistent with prior work in the literature. The distan…
We use Gaia Data Release 2 to identify 13,928 white dwarfs within 100 pc of the Sun. The exquisite astrometry from Gaia reveals for the first time a bifurcation in the observed white dwarf sequence in both Gaia and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) passbands. The latter is easily explained by a helium atmosphere white dwarf fraction of 36%. However, the bifurcation in the Gaia colour-magnitude diagram depends on both the atmospheric composition and the mass distribution. We simulate theoretical colour-magnitude diagrams for single and binary white dwarfs using a population synthesis approach…
According to the fossil-field hypothesis magnetic fields are remnants of the previous stages of evolution. However, population synthesis calculations are unable to reproduce the magnetic white dwarf (MWD) sample without binary interaction or inclusion of a population of progenitor with unobservable small-scale fields. One necessary ingredient in population synthesis is the initial-to-final-mass relation (IFMR) which describes the mass-loss processes during the stellar evolution. When white dwarfs are members of open clusters, their evolutionary histories can be assessed through the use of clus…
The next generation of spectroscopic surveys is expected to provide spectra for hundreds of thousands of white dwarf (WD) candidates in the upcoming years. Currently, spectroscopic classification of white dwarfs is mostly done by visual inspection, requiring substantial amounts of expert attention. We propose a data-driven pipeline for fast, automatic selection and spectroscopic classification of WD candidates, trained using spectroscopically confirmed objects with available Gaia astrometry, photometry, and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectra with signal-to-noise ratios $\geq9$. The pipeli…
In the first paper of this series (Blouin et al. 2018), we presented our upgraded cool white dwarf atmosphere code. In this second paper, we use our new models to analyze SDSS J080440.63+223948.6 (J0804+2239), the first DZ star to show collision-induced absorption (CIA). This object provides a crucial test for our models, since previous versions of our code were unable to simultaneously fit the metal absorption lines and the CIA. We find an excellent fit to both the spectroscopic and photometric data, which further validates the improved constitutive physics of our models. We also show that th…
We present a sample of 59 periodic variables from the Palomar Transient Factory, selected from published catalogues of white dwarf (WD) candidates. The variability can likely be attributed to ellipsoidal variation of the tidally distorted companion induced by the gravity of the primary (WD or hot subdwarf) or to the reflection of hot emission by a cooler companion. We searched 11311 spectroscopically or photometrically selected WD candidates from three hot star/WD catalogues, using the Lomb-Scargle periodogram to single out promising sources. We present period estimates for the candidates, 45 …
We present the discovery of 49 new photometrically classified T dwarfs from the combination of large infrared and optical surveys combined with follow-up TNG photometry. We used multi-band infrared and optical photometry from the UKIRT and Sloan Digital Sky Surveys to identify possible brown dwarf candidates, which were then confirmed using methane filter photometry. We have defined a new photometric conversion between CH4s - CH4l colour and spectral type for T4 to T8 brown dwarfs based on a part of the sample that has been followed up using methane photometry and spectroscopy. Using methane d…
We present a set of white dwarf-main sequence (WDMS) binaries identified spectroscopically from the Large sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST, also called the Guo Shou Jing Telescope) pilot survey. We develop a color selection criteria based on what is so far the largest and most complete Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7 WDMS binary catalog and identify 28 WDMS binaries within the LAMOST pilot survey. The primaries in our binary sample are mostly DA white dwarfs except for one DB white dwarf. We derive the stellar atmospheric parameters, masses, and radii for the two…
We report the discovery of 42 white dwarfs in the original Kepler mission field, including nine new confirmed pulsating hydrogen-atmosphere white dwarfs (ZZ Ceti stars). Guided by the Kepler-INT Survey (KIS), we selected white dwarf candidates on the basis of their U-g, g-r, and r-H_alpha photometric colours. We followed up these candidates with high-signal-to-noise optical spectroscopy from the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope. Using ground-based, time-series photometry, we put our sample of new spectroscopically characterized white dwarfs in the context of the empirical ZZ Ceti instability s…
We present preliminary results of long-term monitoring of the peculiar cataclysmic variable FS Aurigae conducted during the 2010-2011 observational season. The multicolor observations revealed, for the first time in photometric data, the precession period of the white dwarf, previously seen only spectroscopically. This is best seen in the (B-I) color index and reflects the spectral energy distribution variability. Analysis of X-ray observations made with Chandra and Swift, also revealed the existence of both the orbital and precession periods in the light curve. We also show that the long-term…
We investigate the properties of 367 ultra-short period binary candidates selected from 31,000 sources recently identified from Catalina Surveys data. Based on light curve morphology, along with WISE, SDSS and GALEX multi-colour photometry, we identify two distinct groups of binaries with periods below the 0.22 day contact binary minimum. In contrast to most recent work, we spectroscopically confirm the existence of M-dwarf+M-dwarf contact binary systems. By measuring the radial velocity variations for five of the shortest-period systems, we find examples of rare cool-white dwarf+M-dwarf binar…
We present an Ultra-Cool Dwarf (UCD) catalogue compiled from low southern Galactic latitudes and mid-plane, from a cross-correlation of the 2MASS and SuperCOSMOS surveys. The catalogue contains 246 members identified from 5042 sq. deg. within 220 deg. <= l <= 360 deg. and 0 deg. < l <= 30 deg., for |b| <= 15 deg. Sixteen candidates are spectroscopically confirmed in the near-IR as UCDs with spectral types from M7.5V to L9. Our catalogue selection method is presented enabling UCDs from ~M8V to the L-T transition to be selected down to a 2MASS limiting magnitude of Ks ~= 14.5 mag. This method do…
Young brown dwarfs share many properties with directly imaged giant extrasolar planets. They therefore provide unique laboratories for investigating the full range of temperature and mass encompasses by the growing collection of planets discovered outside our Solar System. Furthermore, if they can be tied to a particular group of coeval stars, they also provide vital anchor points for low-mass empirical isochrones. We have developed a novel procedure for identifying such objects based on their unique 2MASS and AllWISE colors. Using our search criteria, we have identified 50 new, late-type L dw…
In Gentile Fusillo et al. (2015) we developed a selection method for white dwarf candidates which makes use of photometry, colours and proper motions to calculate a probability of being a white dwarf (Pwd). The application of our method to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release 10 resulted in nearly 66,000 photometrically selected objects with a derived Pwd, approximately 21000 of which are high confidence white dwarf candidates. Here we present an independent test of our selection method based on a sample of spectroscopically confirmed white dwarfs from the LAMOST (Large Sky Area Mu…
The X-ray emission of O-type stars was first discovered in the early days of the Einstein satellite. Since then many different surveys have confirmed that the ratio of X-ray to bolometric luminosity in O-type stars is roughly constant, but there is a paucity of studies that account for detailed information on spectral and wind properties of O-stars. Recently a significant sample of O stars within our Galaxy was spectroscopically identified and presented in the Galactic O-Star Spectroscopic Survey (GOSS). At the same time, a large high-fidelity catalog of X-ray sources detected by the XMM-Newto…
In the past years, some extremely red brown dwarfs were found. They were believed to have low surface gravity, but many of their spectral characteristics were similar to those of high surface gravity brown dwarfs, showing that youth (or low surface gravity) spectral characteristics are poorly understood. We aim to test surface gravity indicators in late-M and early-L brown dwarf spectra using data obtained with the X-shooter spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope. We selected a benchmark sample of brown dwarfs members of Chamaeleon\,I ($\sim$2 Myr), Upper Scorpius (5$-$10~Myr), Pleiades (132…
In this work, we identify 734 ultracool dwarfs with a spectral type of M6 or later, including one L0. Of this sample, 625 were studied spectroscopically for the first time. All of these ultracool dwarfs are within 360~pc, with a \textit{Gaia} G magnitude brighter than ~19.2 mag. By studying the spectra and checking their stellar parameters (Teff, logg, and [FeH] derived with the LAMOST pipeline, we found their cool red nature and their metallicity to be consistent with the nature of Galactic thin-disk objects. Furthermore, 77 of them show lithium absorption lines at 6708A, further indicating t…
Whilst there is a generally accepted evolutionary scheme for the formation of low-mass stars, the analogous processes when moving down in mass to the brown dwarfs regime are not yet well understood. In this first paper we try to build the most complete and unbiased spectroscopically confirmed census of the population of Collinder 69, the central cluster of the Lambda Orionis star forming region, as a first step in addressing the question of how brown dwarfs and planetary mass objects form. We have studied age dependent features in optical and near-infrared spectra of candidate members to the c…
