We examine a novel type of disorder in quantum antiferromagnets. Our model consists of localized spins with antiferromagnetic exchanges on a bipartite quasiperiodic structure, which is geometrically disordered in such a way that no frustration is introduced. In the limit of zero disorder, the structure is the perfect Penrose rhombus tiling. This tiling is progressively disordered by augmenting the number of random "phason flips" or local tile-reshuffling operations. The ground state remains Néel ordered, and we have studied its properties as a function of increasing disorder using linear spin wave theory and quantum Monte Carlo. We find that the ground state energy decreases, indicating enhanced quantum fluctuations with increasing disorder. The magnon spectrum is progressively smoothed, and the effective spin wave velocity of low energy magnons increases with disorder. For large disorder, the ground state energy as well as the average staggered magnetization tend towards limiting values characteristic of this type of randomized tilings.
We discuss the ground state of a disordered two dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The starting structure is taken to be a perfectly deterministic quasiperiodic tiling, and the type of disorder we consider is geometric, involving frozen phason flips of a randomly selected subset of sites. We consider S=1/2 quantum spins placed on the vertices of the tiling, and interacting with the nearest neighbor spins with a uniform exchange interaction J. We calculate the energy spectrum, ground state energy and real space local magnetization values as a function of degree of disorder. We find that qu…
Thin ferromagnetic films can possess unconventional magnetic properties, opening a new road for using them in spintronic technologies. In the present work exploiting three different methods, we comprehensively analyze phason excitations of a skyrmion lattice in synthetic antiferromagnets. To analyze phason excitations of the skyrmion lattice, we have constructed an analytical model based on three coupled helices and found a linear gapless mode. Micromagnetic simulations also support this result. Moreover, a similar result has been achieved within the rigid skyrmion lattice model based on the c…
The paper considers the effects of random fluctuations of the local spin connectivities (fluctuations of the geometry) on ground state properties of a two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnet. We analyse the behavior of spins described by the Heisenberg model as a function of what we call phason flip disorder, following a terminology used for aperiodic systems. The calculations were carried out both within linear spin wave theory and using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. An "order by disorder" phenomenon is observed in this model, wherein antiferromagnetism is found to be enhanced by phason di…
Site dilution of spin-gapped antiferromagnets leads to localized free moments, which can order antiferromagnetically in two and higher dimensions. Here we show how a weak magnetic field drives this order-by-disorder state into a novel disordered-free-moment phase, characterized by the formation of local singlets between neighboring moments and by localized moments aligned antiparallel to the field. This disordered phase is characterized by the absence of a gap, as it is the case in a Bose glass. The associated field-driven quantum phase transition is consistent with the universality of a super…
We investigate the field-induced insulator-to-superfluid transition of bosonic quasiparticles in $S=1/2$ weakly-coupled dimer antiferromagnets. In presence of realistic disorder due to site dilution of the magnetic lattice, we show that the system displays an extended Bose-glass phase characterized by the localization of the hard-core quasiparticles.
We present a large-N variational approach to describe the magnetism of insulating doped semiconductors based on a disorder-generalization of the resonating-valence-bond theory for quantum antiferromagnets. This method captures all the qualitative and even quantitative predictions of the strong-disorder renormalization group approach over the entire experimentally relevant temperature range. Finally, by mapping the problem on a hard-sphere fluid, we could provide an essentially exact analytic solution without any adjustable parameters.
The competition between spin glass (SG), antiferromagnetism (AF) and Kondo effect is studied here in a model which consists of two Kondo sublattices with a gaussian random interaction between spins in differents sublattices with an antiferromagnetic mean Jo and standard deviation J. In the present approach there is no hopping of the conduction electrons between the sublattices and only spins in different sublattices can interact. The problem is formulated in the path integral formalism where the spin operators are expressed as bilinear combinations of Grassmann fields which can be solved at me…
The interplay of disorder and spin-fluctuation effects in a disordered antiferromagnet is studied. In the weak-disorder regime (W \le U), while the energy gap decreases rapidly with disorder, the sublattice magnetization, including quantum corrections, is found to remain essentially unchanged in the strong correlation limit. Magnon energies and Neel temperature are enhanced by disorder in this limit. A single paradigm of disorder-enhanced delocalization qualitatively accounts for all these weak disorder effects. Vertex corrections and magnon damping, which appear only at order (W/U)^4, are als…
We show the presence of a Casimir type force between domain walls in a two dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet subject to geometrical fluctuations. The type of fluctuations that we consider, called phason flips, are well known in quasicrystals, but less so in periodic structures. As the classical ground state energy of the antiferromagnet is unaffected by this type of fluctuation, energy changes are purely of quantum origin. We calculate the effective interaction between two parallel domain walls, defining a slab of thickness d, in such an antiferromagnet within linear spin wave theory. The…
The Néel temperature, staggered magnetization density, as well as the spinwave velocity of a three-dimensional (3D) quantum Heisenberg model with antiferromagnetic disorder (randomness) are calculated using first principles non-perturbative quantum Monte Carlo simulations. In particular, we examine the validity of universal scaling relations that are related to these three studied physical quantities. These relations are relevant to experimental data and are firmly established for clean (regular) 3D dimerized spin-1/2 Heisenberg models. Remarkably, our numerical results show that the considere…
Interplay between Kondo effect and trends to antiferromagnetic and spin glass ordering in perfect and disordered bipartite Kondo lattices is considered. Ginzburg-Landau equation is derived from the microscopic effective action written in three mode representation (Kondo screening, antiferromagnetic correlations and spin liquid correlations). The problem of local constraint is resolved by means of Popov-Fedotov representation for localized spin operators. It is shown that the Kondo screening enhances the trend to a spin liquid crossover and suppresses antiferromagnetic ordering in perfect Kondo…
We present a certain class of two-dimensional frustrated quantum Heisenberg spin systems with multiple ring exchange interactions which are rigorously demonstrated to have quantum disordered ground states without magnetic long-range order. The systems considered in this paper are s=1/2 antiferromagnets on a honeycomb and square lattices, and an s=1 antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice. We find that for a particular set of parameter values, the ground state is a short-range resonating valence bond state or a valence bond crystal state. It is shown that these systems are closely related to th…
Bi3Mn4O12(NO3), in which the Mn4+ ions carry S=3/2, is the first honeycomb lattice system that shows no long-range magnetic order. Using neutron scattering, we have determined that short-range antiferromagnetic correlations develop at low temperatures. Applied magnetic fields induce a magnetic transition, in which the short-range order abruptly expands into a long-range order.
The field-induced antiferromagnetic ordering in systems of weakly coupled S=1/2 dimers at zero temperature can be described as a Bose-Einstein condensation of triplet quasiparticles (singlet quasiholes) in the ground state. For the case of a Heisenberg bilayer, it is here shown how the above picture is altered in the presence of site dilution of the magnetic lattice. Geometric randomness leads to quantum localization of the quasiparticles/quasiholes and to an extended Bose-glass phase in a realistic disordered model. This localization phenomenon drives the system towards a quantum-disordered p…
Ag2CrO2 is an S=3/2 frustrated triangular lattice antiferromagnet without orbital degree of freedom. With decreasing temperature, a 4-sublatice spin state develops. However, a long-range partially disordered state with 5 sublattices abruptly appears at TN=24 K, accompanied by a structural distortion, and persists at least down to 2 K. The spin-lattice coupling stabilizes the anomalous state, which is expected to appear only in limited ranges of further-neighbor interactions and temperature. It was found that the spin-lattice coupling is a common feature in triangular lattice antiferromagnets w…
Motivated by puzzling spin-glass behaviors observed in many pyrochlore-based magnets, effects of magnetoelastic coupling to local lattice distortions were recently studied by the authors for a bond-disordered antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 047204 (2011)]. Here, we extend the analyses with focusing on the critical property of the spin-glass transition which occurs concomitantly with a nematic transition. Finite-size scaling analyses are performed up to a larger system size with 8192 spins to estimate the transition temperature and critical exponents. The exponent…
We have studied a system of light bosonic spinons interacting with compact gauge fields. By the generalization of the works by Polyakov on compact gauge fields the system is mapped to monopole plasma model and a model of open surfaces coupled to antisymmetric Kalb-Ramond gauge fields. The monopole correlation function in the presence of light spinon is computed based on these two models.
We study the evolution of magnetic excitations in the disordered two-dimensional antiferromagnet Sr2Ir1-xRuxO4. A gigantic magnetic gap greater than 40 meV opens at x = 0.27 and increases with Ru concentration, rendering the dispersive magnetic excitations in Sr2IrO4 almost momentum independent. Up to a Ru concentration of x = 0.77, both experiments and first-principles calculations show the Ir Jeff = 1/2 state remains intact. The magnetic gap arises from the local interaction anisotropy in the proximity of the Ru disorder. Under the coherent potential approximation, we reproduce the experimen…
We report the results of dc and ac magnetization measurements as a function of temperature (1.8 - 300 K) for the spin chain compound, Ca$_3$CoRhO$_6$, which has been recently reported to exhibit a partially disordered antiferromagnetic (PDAF) structure in the range 30 - 90 K and spin-glass freezing below 30 K. We observe an unexpectedly large frequency dependence of ac susceptibility in the T range 30 - 90 K, typical of superparamagnets. In addition, we find that there is no difference in the isothermal remanent magnetization behavior for the two regimes below 90 K. These findings call for mor…
Only 3% hole doping by Li is sufficient to suppress the long-range antiferromagnetic order in La2CuO4. Spin dynamics in such a disordered state was investigated with measurements of the dynamic magnetic structure factor S(omega,q), using cold neutron spectroscopy, for La2(Cu0.94Li0.06)O4. The S(omega,q) is found to sharply peak at (pi,pi), and its dynamics to be relaxational. Confirming theoretical expectation for the quantum disordered 2D S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet, the energy scale saturates at a finite value at low temperatures. Possible connection to the ``pseudo spin gap'' phenomeno…
We investigate quantum phase transitions in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on square lattices with inhomogeneous bond dilution. It is shown that quantum fluctuations can be continuously tuned by inhomogeneous bond dilution, eventually leading to the destruction of long-range magnetic order on the percolating cluster. Two multicritical points are identified at which the magnetic transition separates from the percolation transition, introducing a novel quantum phase transition. Beyond these multicritical points a quantum-disordered phase appears, characterized by an infinite percolating…
Two-dimensional disordered quantum antiferromagnets are studied by means of a continuum description in which disorder is introduced by a random distribution of couplings (spin stiffnesses) in the ordered phase of the Nonlinear Sigma Model. Quenched soliton (skyrmion) correlation functions are evaluated and used, along with the quenched magnetization, to characterize the phase structure of the system. When magnetic dilution is exponentially suppressed, the introduction of disorder only modifies the subleading terms in the large distance behavior of the soliton correlation functions, yielding th…
A model of disordered spin-Peierls system is considered, where domain walls are randomly distributed as a telegraph noise. For this realization of the disorder in an XX spin chain, we calculate exactly the density of states as well as several thermodynamic quantities. The resulting physical behavior should be qualitatively unchanged even for an XXZ chain, up to the isotropic XXX point. For weak disorder, besides a high energy regime where the behavior of a pure spin-Peierls system is recovered, there is a cross-over to a low energy regime with singular thermodynamic properties and enhanced ant…
Motivated by puzzling characteristics of spin-glass transitions widely observed in pyrochlore-based frustrated materials, we investigate effects of coupling to local lattice distortions in a bond-disordered antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We show that the spin-glass transition temperature $\TSG$ is largely enhanced by the spin-lattice coupling, and furthermore, becomes almost independent of $Δ$ in a wide range of the disorder strength $Δ$. The critical property of the spin glass transition is indistinguishable from that of the canonical Heisenber…
We investigated the crystal and magnetic structures of the spin-1/2 frustrated antiferromagnet Cu3Mo2O9 in which the spin system consists of antiferromagnetic chains and dimers. The space group at room temperature has been reported to be orthorhombic Pnma (No. 62). We infer that the space group above TN = 7.9 K is monoclinic P2_1/m (No. 11) from the observation of reflections forbidden in Pnma in x-ray powder diffraction experiments at room temperature. We determined the magnetic structure of Cu3Mo2O9 in neutron powder diffraction experiments. Magnetic moments on dimer sites lie in the ac plan…
Field-induced magnetic ordering in the structurally disordered quantum magnets Ni(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_2$$\cdot$4SC(NH$_2$)$_2$, $x=8$% and 13%, is studied by means of neutron diffraction. The order parameter critical exponent is found to be very close to its value $β=0.5$ expected for magnetic Bose-Einstein condensation in the absence of disorder. This result applies to temperatures down to 40 mK, and a 1 T range in magnetic field. The crossover exponent is found to be $ϕ\sim 0.4$, for temperature ranges as small as 300 mK. Possible reasons for a discrepancy with recent numerical simulations an…
The low temperature phase diagram of 1D weakly disordered quantum systems like charge or spin density waves and Luttinger liquids is studied by a \emph{full finite temperature} renormalization group (RG) calculation. For vanishing quantum fluctuations this approach is amended by an \emph{exact} solution in the case of strong disorder and by a mapping onto the \emph{Burgers equation with noise} in the case of weak disorder, respectively. At \emph{zero} temperature we reproduce the quantum phase transition between a pinned (localized) and an unpinned (delocalized) phase for weak and strong quant…
We review recent progress in our theoretical understanding of strongly correlated fermion systems in the presence of disorder. Results were obtained by the application of a powerful nonperturbative approach, the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT), to interacting disordered lattice fermions. In particular, we demonstrate that DMFT combined with geometric averaging over disorder can capture Anderson localization and Mott insulating phases on the level of one-particle correlation functions. Results are presented for the ground-state phase diagram of the Anderson-Hubbard model at half filling, bot…
We study a class of disordered continuous classical spin systems including the kagome Heisenberg magnet. While each term in its local Hamiltonian can be independently minimised, we find {\it discrete} degenerate ground states whose number grows exponentially with system size. These states do not exhibit zero-energy `excitations' characteristic of highly frustrated magnets but instead are local minima of the energy landscape, albeit with an anomalously soft excitation spectrum. This represents a spin liquid version of the phenomenon of jamming familiar from granular media and structural glasses…
$S$ = 1/2 Ising kagome antiferromagnets (KAFs) are rare in reality. In this work, we report the magnetic ground state and field-induced transitions of an $S$ = 1/2 Ising antiferromagnet with a stacked kagome geometry, Na$_5$Co$_{15.5}$Te$_6$O$_{36}$. Upon cooling, magnetic susceptibility measurement reveals three successive magnetic transitions at $T_1$ = 45.2 K, $T_2$ = 35.4 K, and $T_3 \sim$ 20 K. When the magnetic field is applied along the Ising $c$ axis, a strikingly anomalous initial magnetization lying outside the hysteresis loop is observed below $T_3$. Through the detailed characteriz…
Motivated by impurity-induced magnetic ordering phenomena in spin-gap materials like TlCuCl3, we develop a mean-field theory for strongly disordered antiferromagnets, designed to capture the broad distribution of coupling constants in the effective model for the impurity degrees of freedom. Based on our results, we argue that in the presence of random magnetic couplings the conventional first-order spin-flop transition of an anisotropic antiferromagnet is split into two transitions at low temperatures, associated with separate order parameters along and perpendicular to the field axis. We demo…
Quantum magnets represent an ideal playground for the controlled realization of novel quantum phases and of quantum phase transitions. The Hamiltonian of the system can be indeed manipulated by applying a magnetic field or pressure on the sample. When doping the system with non-magnetic impurities, novel inhomogeneous phases emerge from the interplay between geometric randomness and quantum fluctuations. In this paper we review our recent work on quantum phase transitions and novel quantum phases realized in disordered quantum magnets. The system inhomogeneity is found to strongly affect phase…
Using the recently introduced adaptive density-matrix renormalization-group method, we study the many spin-spin correlations of the spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with random coupling constants, namely, the mean value of the bulk and of the end-to-end correlations, the typical value of the bulk correlations, and the distribution of the bulk correlations. Our results are in striking agreement with the predictions of the strong-disorder renormalization group method. We do not find any hint of logarithmic corrections neither in the bulk average correlations, which were recently rep…
In addition to the well known ferromagnetism, double perovskites are also expected to exhibit antiferromagnetic (AF) order driven by electron delocalisation. This has been seen in model Hamiltonian studies and confirmed via ab initio calculations. The AF phases should occur, for example, on sufficient electron doping of materials like Sr_2FeMoO_6 (SFMO) via La substitution for Sr. Clear experimental indication of such AF order is limited, possibly because of increase in antisite disorder with La doping on SFMO, although intriguing signatures of non ferromagnetic behaviour are seen. We study th…
The quantum critical regime (QCR) of a two-dimensional (2D) disordered and a 2D clean dimerized spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg models are studied using the first principles nonperturbative quantum Monte Carlo simulations (QMC). In particular, the three well-known universal coefficients associated with QCR are investigated in detail. While in our investigation we find the obtained results are consistent with the related analytic predictions, non-negligible finite temperature ($T$) effects are observed. Such an influence from $T$ on the properties of the considered spin systems related to QCR has…
We have systematically investigated the variation of the exchange parameters and the ground state in the $S = 1/2$ kagome-lattice antiferromagnet (Rb$_{1-x}$Cs$_{x}$)$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$, via magnetic measurements using single crystals. One of the parent compounds, Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$, which has a distorted kagome lattice accompanied by four sorts of nearest-neighbor exchange interaction, has a disordered ground state described by a pinwheel valence-bond-solid state. The other parent compound, Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$, which has a uniform kagome lattice at room temperature, has an ordered gro…
We present large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations of a two-dimensional (2d) bilayer quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet with random dimer dilution. In contrast to the exotic scaling scenarios found in many other random quantum systems, the quantum phase transition in this system is characterized by a finite-disorder fixed point with power-law scaling. After accounting for strong corrections to scaling, characterized by a leading irrelevant exponent of ω= 0.48, we find universal, i.e., disorder-independent, critical exponents z=1.310(6) and ν=1.16(3). We discuss the consequences of these findings a…
The spin-fermion model has long been used to describe the quantum-critical behavior of 2d electron systems near an antiferromagnetic (AFM) instability. Recently, the standard procedure to integrate out the fermions to obtain an effective action for spin waves has been questioned in the clean case. We show that in the presence of disorder, the single fermion loops display two crossover scales: upon lowering the energy, the singularities of the clean fermionic loops are first cut off, but below a second scale new singularities arise that lead again to marginal scaling. In addition, impurity line…
The magnetic ground state phase diagram of the disordered Hubbard model at half-filling is computed in dynamical mean-field theory supplemented with the spin resolved, typical local density of states. The competition between many-body correlations and disorder is found to stabilize paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic metallic phases at weak interactions. Strong disorder leads to Anderson localization of the electrons and suppresses the antiferromagnetic long-range order. Slater and Heisenberg antiferromagnets respond characteristically different to disorder. The results can be tested with cold …
We study the quantum phase transition in the three-dimensional disordered itinerant antiferromagnet by Monte-Carlo simulations of the order-parameter field theory. We find strong evidence for the transition being controlled by an infinite-randomness fixed point: The dynamical scaling is activated, i.e., the logarithm of the energy scales like a power of the length, implying a dynamical exponent of infinity. The probability distribution of the energy gaps is very broad and becomes broader with increasing system size, even on a logarithmic scale.
We determined the crystal structure of Cs$_2$LiRuCl$_6$, which was synthesized first in this work, and investigated its magnetic properties. Cs$_2$LiRuCl$_6$ has a hexagonal structure composed of linear chains of face-sharing RuCl$_6$ and LiCl$_6$ octahedra. In two-thirds of the structural chains, Ru$^{3+}$ and Li$^+$ sites are almost ordered, while in the other chains their sites are disordered. This situation is analogous to the ground state of the antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice. Using electron paramagnetic resonance, we evaluated the $g$ factors of Ru$^{3+}$ with effe…
We study antiferromagnetic two-leg spin-1/2 ladders with strong bond randomness, using the real space renormalization group method. We find the low-temperature spin susceptibility of the system follows non-universal power laws, and the ground state spin-spin correlation is short-ranged. Our results suggest that there is no phase transition when the bond randomness increases from zero; for strong enough randomness the system is in a Griffith region with divergent spin susceptibility and short-range spin-spin correlation.
The multiple reentrant quantum phase transitions in the $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with random bond alternation in the magnetic field are investigated by the density matrix renormalization group method combined with the interchain mean field approximation. It is assumed that the odd-th bond is antiferromagnetic with strength $J$ and even-th bond can take the values ${\JS}$ and ${\JW}$ $ ({\JS} > J > {\JW} > 0)$ randomly with probability $p$ and $1-p$, respectively. The pure version ($p=0$ and $p=1$) of this model has a spin gap but exhibits a field induced antiferromagnetism i…
I use the two-step density-matrix renormalization group method to extract the critical exponents $β$ and $ν$ in the transition from a Néel $Q=(π,π)$ phase to a magnetically disordered phase with a spin gap. I find that the exponent $β$ computed from the magnetic side of the transition is consistent with that of the classical Heisenberg model, but not the exponent $zν$ computed from the disordered side. I also show the contrast between integer and half-integer spin cases.
We study the effects of disorder on long-range antiferromagnetic correlations in the half-filled, two dimensional, repulsive Hubbard model at T=0. A mean field approach is first employed to gain a qualitative picture of the physics and to guide our choice for a trial wave function in a constrained path quantum Monte Carlo (CPQMC) method that allows for a more accurate treatment of correlations. Within the mean field calculation, we observe both Anderson and Mott insulating antiferromagnetic phases. There are transitions to a paramagnet only for relatively weak coupling, U < 2t in the case of b…
Antiferromagnetically coupled S=1/2 spins on an isotropic triangular lattice is the paradigm of frustrated quantum magnetism, but structurally ideal realizations are rare. Here we investigate NaYbO$_2$, which hosts an ideal triangular lattice of $J_{eff}=1/2$ moments with no inherent site disorder. No signatures of conventional magnetic order appear down to 50 mK, strongly suggesting a quantum spin liquid ground state. We observe a two-peak specific heat and a nearly quadratic temperature dependence in accord with expectations for a two-dimensional Dirac spin liquid. Application of a magnetic …
We show that the effect of disorder on a Mott-Hubbard insulator of interacting electrons produces a quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetic to a paramagnetic phase governed by a percolation of the singly occupied weakly disordered sites. Near the transition, we propose that a new type of defect, formed by the resonant exchange between a spin singlet and a doubly occupied site with an attractive disorder potential, plays an important role. These resonant pair exchange defects reduce the staggered magnetization but enhance the coupling of the two spins and produce characteristic signa…
We investigate partially disordered antiferromagnetism in CoCl$_2$-2SC(NH$_2$)$_2$, in which a-b plane hexagonal layers are staggered along the c-axis, rather than stacked. A robust 1/3 state forms in applied magnetic fields which the spins are locked, varying neither as a function of temperature nor field. By contrast, in zero field, partial antiferromagnetic order occurs, in which free spins are available to create a Curie-like magnetic susceptibility. We report measurements of the crystallographic structure, and the specific heat, magnetization, and electric polarization down to $T$ = 50 mK…
General conditions in which disordered, spin liquid, and valence-bond ordered phases occur in quantum Ising antiferromagnets are studied using the prototype Kagome lattice spin models. A range of quantum dynamical processes in the Ising model, with and without total Ising spin conserved, are analytically shown to yield all three characteristic quantum paramagnetic phases in the Kagome system. Special emphasis is given to the XXZ model that can be sensibly compared to the Kagome lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. It is explicitly demonstrated that the total-spin-conserving dynamics can yield a…
Using the Resonant Valence Bond (RVB) concept and the Schwinger-boson mean field approximation, we investigate a two dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We find that increasing the coupling ratio ($α=J_{y}/J_{x}$), a disordered-ordered phase transition appears beyond a critical value ($α_{c}$). When $α>α_{c}$ there exists a finite $T_{N}$ beyond which an ordered-disordered phase transition occurs, while for $α<α_{c}$ there always exists a gap. Also we find that a decoupling temperature $T_{D}$ exists for 1D and 2D isotropic case, when $T$ approaches $T_{D}$ the RVB order parame…
The models constructed by Affleck, Kennedy, Lieb, and Tasaki describe a family of quantum antiferromagnets on arbitrary lattices, where the local spin S is an integer multiple M of half the lattice coordination number. The equal time quantum correlations in their ground states may be computed as finite temperature correlations of a classical O(3) model on the same lattice, where the temperature is given by T=1/M. In dimensions d=1 and d=2 this mapping implies that all AKLT states are quantum disordered. We consider AKLT states in d=3 where the nature of the AKLT states is now a question of det…
We present inelastic neutron scattering and thermodynamic measurements characterizing the magnetic excitations in a disordered non-magnetic substituted spin-liquid antiferromagnet. The parent compound Ba3Mn2O8 is a dimerized, quasi-two-dimensional geometrically frustrated quantum disordered antiferromagnet. We substitute this compound with non-magnetic vanadium for the S = 1 manganese atoms, Ba3(Mn1-xVx)2O8, and find that the singlet-triplet excitations which dominate the spectrum of the parent compound persist for the full range of substitution examined, x = 0.02 to 0.3. We also observe addit…
We study the quantum Ising antiferromagnet on the Kagome lattice, with weak transverse field dynamics and other local perturbations. We analytically demonstrate the possibility of a disordered zero-temperature phase that is smoothly connected to the phase at strong transverse fields. This is done by means of an appropriate mapping to a compact U(1) gauge theory on the honeycomb lattice that is coupled to a charge-1 matter field. Our results are consistent with existing Monte-Carlo calculations. The differences with other commonly studied lattices (in which such disordered phases do not obtain …
The stability of the disordered ground state of the classical Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet is studied within extensive Monte Carlo simulations by introducing an additional exchange interaction $J'$ that interpolates between the pyrochlore lattice ($J'=0$) and the face-centered cubic lattice ($J'=J$). It is found that for $J'/J$ as low as $J'/J\ge 0.01$, the system is long range ordered : the disordered ground state of the pyrochlore antiferromagnet is unstable when introducing very small deviations from the pure $J'=0$ limit. Furthermore, it is found that the selected phase is a colli…
