We consider all complex projective manifolds X that satisfy at least one of the following three conditions:
1. There exists a pair $(C ,φ)$, where $C$ is a compact connected Riemann surface and $φ: C\to X$ a holomorphic map, such that the pull back $φ^*TX$ is not semistable.
2. The variety $X$ admits an étale covering by an abelian variety.
3. The dimension $\dim X \leq 1$.
We conjecture that all complex projective manifolds are of the above type, and prove that the following classes are among those that are of the above type. i) All $X$ with a finite fundamental group. ii) All $X$ such that there is a nonconstant morphism from the projective line to $X$. iii) All $X$ such that the canonical line bundle $K_X$ is either positive or negative or $c_1(K_X) \in H^2(X, {\mathbb Q})$ vanishes. iv) All projective surfaces.
Let M be a complex projective manifold with the property that for any compact Riemann surface C and holomorphic map f: C -> M the pullback of the tangent bundle of M is semistable. We prove that in this case M is a curve or a finite etale quotient of an abelian variety answering a conjecture of I. Biswas.
We give an example of a strongly semistable vector bundle of rank two on the projective plane such that there exist smooth curves of arbitrary high degree with the property that the restriction of the bundle to the curve is not strongly semistable anymore. This shows that a Bogomolov type restriction theorem does not hold for strong semistability in positive characteristic.
In this article we study asymptotic slopes of strongly semistable vector bundles on a smooth projective surface. A connection between asymptotic slopes and strong restriction theorem of a strongly semistable vector bundle is shown. We also give an equivalent criterion of strong semistability of a vector bundle in terms of its asymptotic slopes under some assumptions on the surface and on the bundle.
This paper is devoted to generalizing the Mehta-Ramanathan restriction theorem to the case of ε-semistable and k-semistable decorated sheaves. After recalling the definition of decorated sheaves and their usual semistability we define the ε and k-(semi)stablility. We first prove the existence of a (unique) ε-maximal destabilizing subsheaf for decorated sheaves (Section 3.1). After some others preliminar results (such as the opennes condition for families of ε-semistable decorated sheaves) we finally prove, in Section 3.7, a restriction theorem for slope ε-semistable decorated sheaves. In Secti…
For $n\geq 3$, let $M$ be an $(n+r)$-dimensional irreducible Hermitian symmetric space of compact type and let $\mathcal{O}_M(1)$ be the ample generator of $Pic(M)$. Let $Y=H_1\cap\dots\cap H_r$ be a smooth complete intersection of dimension $n$ where $H_i\in\vert \mathcal{O}_M(d_i)\vert$ with $d_i\geq 2$. We prove a vanishing theorem for twisted holomorphic forms on $Y$. As an application, we show that the tangent bundle $T_Y$ of $Y$ is stable. Moreover, if $X$ is a smooth hypersurface of degree $d$ in $Y$ such that the restriction $Pic(Y)\rightarrow Pic(X)$ is surjective, we establish some e…
The present paper concerns the invariants of generically nef vector bundles on ruled surfaces. By Mehta - Ramanathan Restriction Theorem and by Miyaoka characterization of semistable vector bundles on a curve, the generic nefness can be considered as a weak form of semistability. We establish a Bogomolov type inequality for generically nef vector bundles with nef general fiber restriction on ruled surfaces with no negative section. This gives an affermative answer in this case to a problem posed by Th. Peternell. Concerning ruled surfaces with a negative section, we prove a a similar result fo…
Let $X = \mathbb{P}(E_1) \times_C \mathbb{P}(E_2)$ where $C$ is a smooth curve and let $E_1$, $E_2$ be vector bundles over $C$. In this paper, we extend the results in \cite{K-M-R} by computing the nef cone of $X$ without restriction on the rank or semistability of $E_1$ and $E_2$. We also study the Seshadri constants of ample line bundles on $X$. We calculate the Seshadri constants in some cases and give bounds in some of the remaining cases.
We show that the tangent bundle of a projective manifold with nef anticanonical class is generically nef. That is, its restriction to a curve cut out by general sufficiently ample divisors is a nef vector bundle. This confirms a conjecture of Peternell. As a consequence, the second Chern class of such a manifold has non-negative intersections with ample divisors. We also investigate under which conditions these positivities are strict, and answer a question of Yau.
In this article, we give numerical restrictions on the Chern classes of Ulrich bundles on higher-dimensional manifolds, which are inspired by the results of Casnati in the case of surfaces. As a by-product, we prove that the only projective manifolds whose tangent bundle is Ulrich are the twisted cubic and the Veronese surface. Moreover, we prove that the cotangent bundle is never Ulrich.
In this paper, we study generalized line bundles over $C_n$, a primitive multiple curve of arbitrary multiplicity $n$, where $n$ is a positive integer. In particular, we give a structure theorem for them and we characterize their semistability in terms of $n-1$ integral invariants, the indices. These results are used to describe the irreducible components that contain stable generalized line bundles in the Simpson moduli space of semistable sheaves of generalized rank $n$ and fixed generalized degree on $C_n$. We compute also the dimension of the Zariski tangent space to this moduli space in a…
Suppose that $X$ is a smooth projective variety and that $C$ is a general member of a family of free rational curves on $X$. We prove several statements showing that the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of $T_{X}|_{C}$ is approximately the same as the restriction of the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of $T_{X}$ with respect to the class of $C$. When $X$ is a Fano variety, we prove that the set of all restricted tangent bundles for general free rational curves is controlled by a finite set of data. We then apply our work to analyze Peyre's "freeness" formulation of Manin's Conjecture in the setting o…
We study the holomorphic vector bundles E over the twistor space Tw(M) of a compact simply connected hyperkähler manifold $M$. We give a characterization of the semistability condition for E in terms of its restrictions to the holomorphic sections of the holomorphic twistor projection π:Tw(M)\rightarrow CP^1. It is shown that if E admits a holomorphic connection, then E is holomorphically trivial and the holomorphic connection on E is trivial as well. For any irreducible vector bundle E on Tw(M) of prime rank, we prove that its restriction to the generic fibre of πis stable. On the other hand,…
Let C be a smooth projective curve with genus g>1 and Clifford index c(C) and let L be a line bundle on C generated by its global sections. The morphism i:C -->P(H^0(L))=P is well-defined and i*T is the restriction to C of the tangent bundle T of the projective space P. Sharpening a theorem by Paranjape, we show that if deg L>2g-c(C)-1 then i*T is semi-stable, specifying when it is also stable. We then prove the existence on many curves of a line bundle L of degree 2g-c(C)-1 such that i*T is not semi-stable. Finally, we completely characterize the (semi-)stability of i*T when C is hyperellipti…
We prove an effective restriction theorem for stable vector bundles $E$ on a smooth projective variety: $E|_D$ is (semi)stable for all irreducible divisors $D \in |kH|$ for all $k$ greater than an explicit constant. As an application, we show that Mercat's conjecture in any rank greater than $2$ fails for curves lying on K3 surfaces. Our technique is to use wall-crossing with respect to (weak) Bridgeland stability conditions which we also use to reprove Camere's result on slope stability of the tangent bundle of $\mathbb{P}^n$ restricted to a K3 surface.
We introduce Seshadri constants for line bundles in a relative setting. They generalize the classical Seshadri constants of line bundles on projective varieties and their extension to vector bundles studied by Beltrametti-Schneider-Sommese and Hacon. There are similarities to the classical theory. In particular, we give a Seshadri-type ampleness criterion, and we relate Seshadri constants to jet separation and to asymptotic base loci. We give three applications of our new version of Seshadri constants. First, a celebrated result of Mori can be restated as saying that any Fano manifold whose ta…
For a semistable reflexive sheaf $E$ of rank $r$ and $c_1=a$ on $¶^n$ and an integer $d$ such that $r|ad$, we give sufficient conditions so that the restriction of $E$ on a generic rational curve of degree $d$ is balanced, i.e. a twist of the trivial bundle (for instance, if $E$ has balanced restriction on a generic line, or $r=2$ or $E$ is an exterior power of the tangent bundle). Assuming this, we give a formula for the 'virtual degree', interpreted enumeratively, of the locus of rational curves of degree $d$ on which the restriction of $E$ is not balanced, generalizing a classical formula d…
We compute Seshadri constants of a torus equivariant nef vector bundle on a projective space satisfying certain conditions. As an application, we compute Seshadri constants of tangent bundles on projective spaces. We also consider equivariant nef vector bundles on Bott towers of height 2 (i.e. Hirzebruch surfaces) and Bott towers of height 3 respectively. Assuming some conditions on the minimal slope of the restrictions of these bundles to invariant curves, we give precise values of Seshadri constant at an arbitrary point. We also give several examples illustrating our results.
We describe the equivariant Chow ring of the wonderful compactification $X$ of a symmetric space of minimal rank, via restriction to the associated toric variety $Y$. Also, we show that the restrictions to $Y$ of the tangent bundle $T_X$ and its logarithmic analogue $S_X$ decompose into a direct sum of line bundles. This yields closed formulae for the equivariant Chern classes of $T_X$ and $S_X$, and, in turn, for the Chern classes of reductive groups considered by Kiritchenko.
We prove that curves in a non-primitive, base point free, ample linear system on a K3 surface have maximal variation. The result is deduced from general restriction theorems applied to the tangent bundle. We also show how to use specialisation to spectral curves to deduce information about the variation of curves contained in a K3 surface more directly. The situation for primitive linear systems is not clear at the moment. However, the maximal variation holds in genus two and can, in many cases, be deduced from a recent result of van Geemen and Voisin confirming a conjecture due to Matsushita.
The study of entire holomorphic curves contained in projective algebraic varieties is intimately related to fascinating questions of geometry and number theory -- especially through the concepts of curvature and positivity which are central themes in Kodaira's contributions to mathematics. The aim of these lectures is to present recent results concerning the geometric side of the problem. The Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture stipulates that for every projective variety $X$ of general type over~${\mathbb C}$, there exists a proper algebraic subvariety $Y$ of $X$ containing all non constant entir…
In the last decades there have been introduced different concepts of stability for projective varieties. In this paper we give a natural and intrinsic criterion of the Chow, and Hilbert, stability for complex irreducible smooth projective curves $C\subset \mathbb P ^n$. Namely, if the restriction $T\mathbb P_{|C} ^n$ of the tangent bundle of $\mathbb P ^n$ to $C$ is stable then $C\subset \mathbb P ^n$ is Chow stable, and hence Hilbert stable. We apply this criterion to describe a smooth open set of the irreducible component $Hilb^{P(t),s}_{Ch}$ of the Hilbert scheme of $\mathbb{P} ^n$ containi…
Associated to an arrangement of projective hyperplanes A is the module D(A), which consists of derivations tangent to A. We study D(A) when A is a configuration of lines in the projective plane. In this setting, we relate the deletion/restriction construction used in the study of hyperplane arrangements to elementary modifications of bundles. This allows us to obtain bounds on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of D(A). We also give simple combinatorial conditions for the associated bundle to be stable, and describe its jump lines. These regularity bounds and stability considerations impose co…
