We propose a generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for the angle- and system-averaged exchange-correlation hole of a many-electron system. This hole, which satisfies known exact constraints, recovers the PBEsol (Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof for solids) exchange-correlation energy functional, a GGA that accurately describes the equilibrium properties of densely packed solids and their surfaces. We find that our PBEsol exchange-correlation hole describes the wavevector analysis of the jellium exchange-correlation surface energy in agreement with a sophisticated time-dependent density-functional calculation (whose three-dimensional wavevector analysis we report here).
Assessment of long-range-corrected exchange-correlation kernels for solids: accurate exciton binding energies via an empirically scaled Bootstrap kernel
A procedure for removing explicit orbital dependence from meta-generalized-gradient approximation (mGGA) exchange-correlation functionals by converting them into Laplacian-dependent functionals recently was developed by us and shown to be successful in molecules. It uses an approximate kinetic energy density functional (KEDF) parametrized to Kohn-Sham results (not experimental data) on a small training set. Here we present extensive validation calculations on periodic solids that demonstrate that the same deorbitalization with the same parametrization also is successful for those extended syst…
A recent study of Mejia-Rodriguez and Trickey [Phys. Rev. A 96, 052512 (2017)] showed that the deorbitalization procedure (replacing the exact Kohn-Sham kinetic-energy density by an approximate orbital-free expression) applied to exchange-correlation functionals of the meta-generalized gradient approximation (MGGA) can lead to important changes in the results for molecular properties. For the present work, the deorbitalization of MGGA functionals is further investigated by considering various properties of solids. It is shown that depending on the MGGA, common orbital-free approximations to th…
Kohn-Sham (KS) density functional theory (DFT) is a very efficient method for calculating various properties of solids as, for instance, the total energy, the electron density, or the electronic band structure. The KS-DFT method leads to rather fast calculations, however the accuracy depends crucially on the chosen approximation for the exchange and correlation (xc) functional $E_{\text{xc}}$ and/or potential $v_{\text{xc}}$. Here, an overview of xc methods to calculate the electronic band structure is given, with the focus on the so-called semilocal methods that are the fastest in KS-DFT and …
We assess the performance of Tao-Mo semilocal exchange correlation (TM) functional [J. Tao and Y. Mo, Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 073001 (2016)] using projector-augmented-wave method with the plane wave basis set in Vienna ab initio simulation package (VASP). The meta-GGA level semilocal functional TM is an all purpose exchange-correlation functional which performs accurately for the wide range of molecular and solid state properties. The exchange functional part of TM is designed from the density matrix expansion (DME) technique together with the slowly varying fourth order gradient expansion. The …
Electrically induced ionic motion offers a new way to realize voltage-controlled magnetism, opening the door to a new generation of logic, sensor, and data storage technologies. Here, we demonstrate an effective approach to magneto-ionically and electrically tune exchange bias in Gd/Ni$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O thin films (x=0.50, 0.67), where neither of the layers alone is ferromagnetic at room temperature. The Gd capping layer deposited onto antiferromagnetic Ni$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O initiates a solid-state redox reaction that reduces an interfacial region of the oxide to ferromagnetic NiCo. Exchange bias…
In this work, we developed and showcased the occ-RI-K algorithm to compute the exact exchange contribution in density functional calculations of solids near the basis set limit. Within the gaussian planewave (GPW) density fitting, our algorithm achieves a 1-2 orders of magnitude speedup compared to conventional GPW algorithms. Since our algorithm is well-suited for simulations with large basis sets, we applied it to 12 hybrid density functionals with pseudopotentials and a large uncontracted basis set to assess their performance on band gaps of 25 simple solids near the basis set limit. The la…
Unconventional and Powerful Ion Sources for Solid-State Ion Exchange, Cu2SO4 and Cu3PO4: Exemplified by Synthesis of Metastable β-CuGaO2 from Stable β-LiGaO2
We adopt a broken-symmetry strategy for evaluating effective magnetic constants $J$ within the fully self-consistent GW method. To understand the degree of spin contamination present in broken-symmetry periodic solutions, we propose several size-extensive quantities that demonstrate that the unrestricted self-consistent GW preserves well the broken-symmetry character of the unrestricted Hartree--Fock solutions. The extracted $J$ are close to the ones obtained from multireference wave-function calculations. In this paper, we establish a robust computational procedure for finding magnetic coupli…
Range separated hybrid density functionals are very successful in describing a wide range of molecular and solid state properties accurately. Range separated hybrid functionals are designed from spherically averaged or system averaged reversed engineered exchange hole. In the present attempt, we employ screened range separated hybrid functional scheme to the meta-GGA rung by using Tao-Mo semilocal exchange hole (or functional). The hybrid functional proposed here utilizes the spherically averaged density matrix expansion based exchange hole in range separation scheme. For slowly varying densit…
We demonstrate the feasibility of performing sufficient configurational sampling of disordered oxides directly from first principles without resorting to the use of fitted models such as cluster expansion. This is achieved by harnessing the power of modern-day cluster supercomputers using the replica exchange Monte Carlo method coupled directly with structural relaxation and energy calculation performed by density functional codes. The idea is applied successfully to the calculation of the temperature-dependence of the degree of inversion in the cation sublattice of MgAl$_2$O$_4$ spinel oxide.…
Uncertainty of DFT calculated mechanical and structural properties of solids due to incompatibility of pseudopotentials and exchange-correlation functionals
An atomic-orbital basis set framework is presented for carrying out velocity- gauge real-time time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) simulations in periodic systems employing range-separated hybrid functionals. Linear optical response obtained from real-time propagation of the time-dependent Kohn-Sham equations including nonlocal exchange is considered in prototypical solid-state materials such as bulk Si, LiF and monolayer hexagonal-BN. Additionally core excitations in monolayer hexagonal-BN at the B and N K-edges are investigated and the role of long-range and short-range nonlocal …
