We prove a ratio ergodic theorem for non-singular free $Z^d$ and $R^d$ actions, along balls in an arbitrary norm. Using a Chacon-Ornstein type lemma the proof is reduced to a statement about the amount of mass of a probability measure that can concentrate on (thickened) boundaries of balls in $R^d$. The proof relies on geometric properties of norms, including the Besicovitch covering lemma and the fact that boundaries of balls have lower dimension than the ambient space. We also show that for general group actions, the Besicovitch covering property not only implies the maximal inequality, but is equivalent to it, implying that further generalization may require new methods.
We find limits of some multiple ergodic averages, generalizing a result of Bergelson to the setting of two commuting transformations and actions of amenable groups.
We use techniques of proof mining to obtain a computable and uniform rate of metastability (in the sense of Tao) for the mean ergodic theorem for a finite number of commuting linear contractive operators on a uniformly convex Banach space.

We prove the mean ergodic theorem of von Neumann in a Hilbert-Kaplansky space. We also prove a multiparameter, modulated, subsequential and a weighted mean ergodic theorems in a Hilbert-Kaplansky space
In the present paper we prove weighted ergodic theorems and multiparameter weighted ergodic theorems for positive contractions acting on $L_p(\hat{\nabla},\hatμ)$. Our main tool is the use of methods of measurable bundles of Banach-Kantorovich lattices.
We show that there is a sequence of subsets of each discrete Heisenberg group for which the non-singular ergodic theorem holds. The sequence depends only on the group; it works for any of its non-singular actions. To do this we use a metric which was recently shown by Le Donne and Rigot to have the Besicovitch covering property and then apply an adaptation of Hochman's proof of the multiparameter non-singular ergodic theorem. An exposition of how one proves non-singular ergodic theorems of this type is also included, along with a new proof for one of the key steps.
In this paper, we prove a criterion for the local ergodicity of non-uniformly hyperbolic symplectic maps with singularities. Our result is an extension of a theorem of Liverani and Wojtkowski.
We show some results about the Hausdorff dimension of particular minimal but not uniquely ergodic interval exchange transformations. There is an appendix which shows that typical points for two different ergodic measures of an interval exchange can approximate each other differently.
We adapt techniques of Hochman to prove a non-singular ergodic theorem for $\mathbb{Z}^d$-actions where the sums are over rectangles with side lengths increasing at arbitrary rates, and in particular are not necessarily balls of a norm. This result is applied to show that the critical dimensions with respect to sequences of such rectangles are invariants of metric isomorphism. These invariants are calculated for a class of product actions.
In this paper we present a conditional proof of Wojtkowski's Ergodicity Conjecture for the system of 1D perfectly elastic balls falling down in a half line under constant gravitational acceleration. Namely, we prove that almost every such system is (completely hyperbolic and) ergodic, by assuming the transversality between different singularities and between singularities and stable (unstable) invariant manifolds.
We establish characterization results for the ergodicity of stationary symmetric $α$-stable (S$α$S) and $α$-Frechet random fields. We show that the result of Samorodnitsky [Ann. Probab. 33 (2005) 1782-1803] remains valid in the multiparameter setting, that is, a stationary S$α$S ($0<α<2$) random field is ergodic (or, equivalently, weakly mixing) if and only if it is generated by a null group action. Similar results are also established for max-stable random fields. The key ingredient is the adaption of a characterization of positive/null recurrence of group actions by Takahashi [Kodai Math. Se…
In this article we will see some properties that guarantee that a product of an ergodic non-singular action and a probability preserving ergodic action is also an ergodic action. We will start by proving 'The multiplier theorem' for locally compact abelian groups. Then we will show that for certain locally compact Polish groups (Moore groups, and minimally weakly mixing groups), a non-singular G action is weakly mixing if and only if any finite dimensional G-invariant subspace of L_\infty is trivial. Finally, we will show that the Gaussian action associated to the infinite dimensional irreduci…
It is known that nonuniformly hyperbolic maps admitting singularities have at most countably many ergodic Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen (SRB) measures. These maps include the Belykh attractor, the geometric Lorenz attractor, and more general Lorenz-type systems. In this paper, we establish easily verifiable sufficient conditions guaranteeing that the number of ergodic SRB measures is at most finite, and provide examples and nonexamples showing that the conditions are necessary in general.
It is shown that there exist a subsequence for which the multiple ergodic averages of commuting invertible measure preserving transformations of a Lebesgue probability space converge almost everywhere provided that the maps are weakly mixing with an ergodic extra condition. The proof provides a example of non-singular dynamical system for which the maximal ergodic inequality does not hold. We further get that the non-singular strategy to solve the pointwise convergence of the Furstenberg ergodic averages fails.
We prove a ratio ergodic theorem for amenable equivalence relations satisfying a strong form of the Besicovich covering property. We then use this result to study general non-singular actions of non-abelian free groups and establish a ratio ergodic theorem for averages along horospheres.
We discuss an invertible version of Furstenberg's `Ergodic CP Shift Systems'. We show that the explicit regularity of these dynamical systems with respect to magnification of measures, implies certain regularity with respect to translation of measures; We show that the translation action on measures is non-singular, and prove pointwise discrete and continuous ergodic theorems for the translation action.
We show that singular stochastic delay differential equations (SDDEs) induce cocycle maps on a field of Banach spaces. A general Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem on fields of Banach spaces is proved and applied to linear SDDEs. In Part II of this article, we use our results to prove a stable manifold theorem for non-linear singular SDDEs.
We prove that for a minimal rotation T on a 2-step nilmanifold and any measure mu, the push-forward T^n(mu) of mu under T^n tends toward Haar measure if and only if mu projects to Haar measure on the maximal torus factor. For an arbitrary nilmanifold we get the same result along a sequence of uniform density 1. These results strengthen Parry's result that such systems are uniquely ergodic. Extending the work of Furstenberg, we prove an analogous theorem for a large class of iterated skew products. Additionally we prove a multiplicative ergodic theorem for functions taking values in the upper u…
We consider Schrödinger operators with ergodic potential $V_ω(n)=f(T^n(ω))$, $n \in \Z$, $ω\in Ω$, where $T:Ω\to Ω$ is a non-periodic homeomorphism. We show that for generic $f \in C(Ω)$, the spectrum has no absolutely continuous component. The proof is based on approximation by discontinuous potentials which can be treated via Kotani Theory.
We consider the system of $N$ ($\ge2$) elastically colliding hard balls of masses $m_1,...,m_N$ and radius $r$ on the flat unit torus $\Bbb T^ν$, $ν\ge2$. We prove the so called Boltzmann-Sinai Ergodic Hypothesis, i. e. the full hyperbolicity and ergodicity of such systems for every selection $(m_1,...,m_N;r)$ of the external geometric parameters, provided that almost every singular orbit is geometrically hyperbolic (sufficient), i. e. the so called Chernov-Sinai Ansatz is true. The present proof does not use the formerly developed, rather involved algebraic techniques, instead it employs excl…
In the ergodic theory of semi-dispersing billiards the Local Ergodic Theorem, proved by Chernov and Sinai in 1987, plays a central role. So far, all existing proofs of this theorem had to use an annoying global hypothesis, namely the almost sure hyperbolicity of singular orbits. (This is the so called Chernov--Sinai Ansatz.) Here we introduce some new geometric ideas to overcome this difficulty and liberate the proof from the tyranny of the Ansatz. The presented proof is a substantial generalization of my previous joint result with N. Chernov (which is a $2D$ result) to arbitrary dimensions. A…
Given an ergodic measure with positive entropy and only positive Lyapunov exponents, its dynamical quantifiers can be approximated by means of quantifiers of some family of uniformly expanding repellers. Here non-uniformly expanding maps are studied that are $C^{1+β}$ smooth outside a set of possibly critical or singular points.
We prove a log average almost-sure invariance principle (log asip) for renewal processes with positive i.i.d. gaps in the domain of attraction of an $α$-stable law with $0<α<1$. Dynamically, this means that renewal and Mittag-Leffler paths are forward asymptotic in the scaling flow, up to a time average. This strengthens the almost-sure invariance principle in log density we proved in {FisherTalet2011}. The scaling flow is a Bernoulli flow on a probability space. We study a second flow, the increment flow, transverse to the scaling flow, which preserves an infinite invariant measure constructe…
We study double ergodic averages with respect to two general commuting transformations and establish a sharp quantitative result on their convergence in the norm. We approach the problem via real harmonic analysis, using recently developed methods for bounding multilinear singular integrals with certain entangled structure. A byproduct of our proof is a bound for a two-dimensional bilinear square function related to the so-called triangular Hilbert transform.
We introduce the heat equation relative to a positive dd-bar-closed current and apply it to the invariant currents associated with Riemann surface laminations possibly with singularities. The main examples are holomorphic foliations by Riemann surfaces in projective spaces. We prove two kinds of ergodic theorems for such currents: one associated to the heat diffusion and one close to Birkhoff's averaging on orbits of a dynamical system. The heat diffusion theorem with respect to a harmonic measure is also developed for real laminations.
Motivated by Bourgain's work on pointwise ergodic theorems, and the work of Stein and Stein-Wainger on maximally modulated singular integrals without linear terms, we prove that the maximally monomially modulated discrete Hilbert transform, \[ \mathcal{C}_df(x) := \sup_λ\left| \sum_{m \neq 0} f(x-m) \frac{e^{2πi λm^d}}{m} \right| \] is bounded on all $\ell^p, \ 2 - \frac{1}{d^2 + 1} < p < \infty$, for any $d \geq 2$. We also establish almost everywhere pointwise convergence of the modulated ergodic Hilbert transforms (as $λ\to 0$) \[ \sum_{m \neq 0} T^m f(x) \cdot \frac{e^{2πi λm^d}}{m} \] for…
We prove a.e. convergence of continuous-time quadratic averages with respect to two commuting $\mathbb{R}$-actions, coming from a single jointly measurable measure-preserving $\mathbb{R}^2$-action on a probability space. The key ingredient of the proof comes from recent work on multilinear singular integrals; more specifically, from the study of a curved model for the triangular Hilbert transform.
A tale of two vortices: how numerical ergodic theory and transfer operators reveal fundamental changes to coherent structures in non-autonomous dynamical systems
This report discusses recent results as well as new perspectives in the ergodic theory for Riemann surface laminations, with an emphasis on singular holomorphic foliations by curves. The central notions of these developments are leafwise Poincaré metric, directed positive harmonic currents, multiplicative cocycles and Lyapunov exponents. We deal with various ergodic theorems for such laminations: Random and Operator Ergodic Theorems, (Geometric) Birkhoff Ergodic Theorems, Oseledec Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem and Unique Ergodicity Theorems. Applications of these theorems are also given. In p…
Building on results obtained in [GVRS], we prove Local Stable and Unstable Manifold Theorems for nonlinear, singular stochastic delay differential equations. The main tools are rough paths theory and a semi-invertible Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem for cocycles acting on measurable fields of Banach spaces obtained in [GVR].
The Local Ergodic Theorem (also known as the `Fundamental Theorem') gives sufficient conditions under which a phase point has an open neighborhood that belongs (mod 0) to one ergodic component. This theorem is a key ingredient of many proofs of ergodicity for billiards and, more generally, for smooth hyperbolic maps with singularities. However the proof of that theorem relies upon a delicate assumption (Chernov-Sinai Ansatz), which is difficult to check for some physically relevant models, including gases of hard balls. Here we give a proof of the Local Ergodic Theorem for two dimensional bill…
