The perturbative construction of the S-matrix in the causal spacetime approach of Epstein and Glaser may be interpreted as a method of regularization for divergent Feynman diagrams. The results of any method of regularization must be equivalent to those obtained from the Epstein-Glaser (EG) construction, within the freedom left by the latter. In particular, the conceptually well-defined approach of Bogoliubov, Parasuk, Hepp, and Zimmermann (BPHZ), though conceptually different from EG, meets this requirement. Based on this equivalence we propose a modified BPHZ procedure which provides a significant simplification of the techniques of perturbation theory, and which applies equally well to standard quantum field theory and to chiral theories. We illustrate the proposed method by a number of examples of various orders in perturbation theory. At the level of multi-loop diagrams we find that subdiagrams as classified by Zimmermann's forest formula in BPHZ may be restricted to subdiagrams in the sense of Epstein-Glaser, thus entailing an important reduction of actual computations. Furthermore, the relationship of our approach to the method of dimensional regularization is particularly transparent, without having to invoke analytic continuation to unphysical spacetime dimension, and sheds new light on certain parameters within dimensional regularization.
We construct entanglement renormalization schemes which provably approximate the ground states of non-interacting fermion nearest-neighbor hopping Hamiltonians on the one-dimensional discrete line and the two-dimensional square lattice. These schemes give hierarchical quantum circuits which build up the states from unentangled degrees of freedom. The circuits are based on pairs of discrete wavelet transforms which are approximately related by a "half-shift": translation by half a unit cell. The presence of the Fermi surface in the two-dimensional model requires a special kind of circuit archit…
We provide a rigorous construction of the Schwinger functions for the massive and massless Thirring models. We use the renormalization group approach, controlling its flow through the Ward-Takahashi identities combined with the Schwinger-Dyson equation. The role of the anomalies is discussed.
we show there exists a mathematically consistent framework in which the Renormalization Program can be understood in a natural manner. The framework does not require any violations of mathematical rigor usually associated with the Renormalization program. We use the framework of the non-local field theories [these carry a finite mass scale (Λ)]and set up a finite perturbative program. We show how this program leads to the perturbation series of the usual renormalization program [except one difference] if the series is restructured .We further show that the comparison becomes possible if there …
We study the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of renormalization in the case of gauge theories. We show that the Ward identities and the Slavnov-Taylor identities (in the abelian and non-abelian case respectively) are compatible with the Hopf algebra structure, in that they generate a Hopf ideal. Consequently, the quotient Hopf algebra is well-defined and has those identities built in. This provides a purely combinatorial and rigorous proof of compatibility of the Slavnov-Taylor identities with renormalization.
Much of our understanding of critical phenomena is based on the notion of Renormalization Group (RG), but the actual determination of its fixed points is usually based on approximations and truncations, and predictions of physical quantities are often of limited accuracy. The RG fixed points can be however given a fully rigorous and non-perturbative characterization, and this is what is presented here in a model of symplectic fermions with a nonlocal ("long-range") kinetic term depending on a parameter $\varepsilon$ and a quartic interaction. We identify the Banach space of interactions, which…
The multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz describes quantum many-body states by a hierarchical entanglement structure organized by length scale. Numerically, it has been demonstrated to capture critical lattice models and the data of the corresponding conformal field theories with high accuracy. However, a rigorous understanding of its success and precise relation to the continuum is still lacking. To address this challenge, we provide an explicit construction of entanglement-renormalization quantum circuits that rigorously approximate correlation functions of the massless Dirac confo…
Proceeding by way of examples, we update the combinatorics of the treatment of Feynman diagrams with subdivergences in differential renormalization from more recent viewpoints in Epstein--Glaser renormalization in $x$-space.
We report a rigorous quantization of topological quantum mechanics on $\mathbb{R}_{\geqslant 0}$ and $\mathbf{I}= [0, 1]$ in perturbative BV-BFV formalism. Costello's homotopic renormalization is extended, and incorporated in our construction. Moreover, BV quantization of the same model studied in our previous work is derived from the BV-BFV quantization, leading to a comparison between different interpretations of ''state'' in these two frameworks.
A method for finding the renormalization group (RG) improved effective Lagrangian for a massive interacting field theory in curved spacetime is presented. As a particular example, the $λφ^4$-theory is considered and the RG improved effective Lagrangian is explicitly found up to second order in the curvature tensors. As a further application, the curvature-induced phase transitions are discussed for both the massive and the massless versions of the theory. The problems which appear when calculating the RG improved effective Lagrangian for gauge theories are discussed, taking as example the asym…

In a series of papers, we investigate the reformulation of Epstein-Glaser renormalization in coordinate space, both in analytic and Hopf algebraic terms. This first article deals with analytical aspects. Some of the historically good reasons for the divorces of the Epstein-Glaser method, both from mainstream quantum field theory and the mathematical literature on distributions, are made plain; and overcome.
The possibility to construct an inflationary scenario for renormalization-group improved potentials corresponding to the Higgs sector of quantum field models is investigated. Taking into account quantum corrections to the renormalization-group potential which sums all leading logs of perturbation theory is essential for a successful realization of the inflationary scenario, with very reasonable parameters values. The scalar electrodynamics inflationary scenario thus obtained are seen to be in good agreement with the most recent observational data.
A method for computing the low-energy non-perturbative properties of SUSY GFT, starting from the microscopic lagrangian model, is presented. The method relies on covariant SUSY Feynman graph techniques, adapted to low energy, and Renormalization-Group-improved perturbation theory. We apply the method to calculate the glueball superpotential in N=1 SU(2) SYM and obtain a potential of the Veneziano-Yankielowicz type.
The renormalization-group improved effective potential ---to leading-log and in the linear curvature approximation--- is constructed for ``finite'' theories in curved spacetime. It is not trivial and displays a quite interesting, exponential-like structure ---in contrast with the case of flat spacetime where it coincides with the classical potential. Several possible cosmological applications, as curvature-induced phase transitions and modifications of the values of the gravitational and cosmological constants, are briefly discussed.
We apply an improved renormalization group analysis for pure Yang-Mills theory at one loop order and obtained the result that a non-perturbatively generated pole mass of gluon emerges as $M_P^2/Λ^2 \simeq 0.66$, where $Λ$ is the $MS$-bar scale.
We propose a method using perturbation theory in the running coupling constant and the idea of scaling to determine improved actions for lattice field theories combining Wilson's renormalization group with Symanzik's improvement program . The method is based on the analysis of a single renormalization group transformation. We test it on the hierarchical $O(N)$ invariant $σ$ model in two dimensions.
We discuss a resummed perturbation theory based on the Wilson renormalization group. In this formulation the Wilsonian flowing couplings, which generalize the running coupling, enter directly into the loop expansion. In the case of an asymptotically free theory the flowing coupling is well defined since the infrared Landau pole is absent. We show this property in the case of the $ϕ^3_6$ theory. We also extend this formulation to the QED theory and we prove that it is consistent with gauge invariance.
The renormalization-group improved effective potential for an arbitrary renormalizable massless gauge theory in curved spacetime is found, thus generalizing Coleman-Weinberg's approach corresponding to flat space. Some explicit examples are considered, among of them:scalar self-interacting theory, scalar electrody namics, the asymptotically-free SU(2) gauge model, and the SU(5) GUT theory. The possibility of curvature-induced phase transitions is analyzed. It is shown that such a phase transition may take place in a SU(5) inflationary universe. The inclusion of quantum gravity effects isbriefly discus…
We give a rigorous nonperturbative construction of a massless discrete trajectory for Wilson's exact renormalization group. The model is a three dimensional Euclidean field theory with a modified free propagator. The trajectory realizes the mean field to critical crossover from the ultraviolet Gaussian fixed point to an analog recently constructed by Brydges, Mitter and Scoppola of the Wilson-Fisher nontrivial fixed point.
The renormalization group (RG) is used in order to obtain the RG improved effective potential in curved spacetime. This potential is explicitly calculated for the Yukawa model and for scalar electrodynamics, i.e. theories with several (namely, more than one) mass scales, in a space of constant curvature. Using the $λφ^4$-theory on a general curved spacetime as an example, we show how it is possible to find the RG improved effective Lagrangian in curved spacetime. As specific applications, we discuss the possibility of curvature induced phase transitions in the Yukawa model and the effective eq…
Renormalization of massless Feynman amplitudes in $x$-space is reexamined here, using almost exclusively real-variable methods. We compute a wealth of concrete examples by means of recursive extension of distributions. This allows us to show perturbative expansions for the four-point and two-point functions at several loop order. To deal with internal vertices, we expound and expand on convolution theory for log-homogeneous distributions. The approach has much in common with differential renormalization as given by Freedman, Johnson and Latorre; but differs in important details.
We perform an exact renormalization-group analysis of one-dimensional 4-state clock models with complex interactions. Our aim is to provide a simple explicit illustration of the behavior of the renormalization-group flow in a system exhibiting a rich phase diagram. In particular we study the flow in the vicinity of phase transitions with a first-order character, a matter that has been controversial for years. We observe that the flow is continuous and single-valued, even on the phase transition surface, provided that the renormalized Hamiltonian exist. The characteristics of such a flow are in…
The stability conditions of a renormalization group improved effective potential have been discussed in the case of scalar QED and QCD with a colorless scalar. We calculate the same potential in these models assuming the existence of non-perturbative fixed points associated to a conformal phase. In the case of scalar QED the barrier of instability found previously is barely displaced as we approach the fixed point, and in the case of QCD with a colorless scalar not only the barrier is changed but the local minimum of the potential is also changed.
The Epstein--Glaser type T-subtraction introduced by one of the authors in a previous paper is extended to the Lorentz invariant framework. The advantage of using our subtraction instead of Epstein and Glaser's standard W-subtraction method is especially important when working in Minkowski space, as then the counterterms necessary to keep Lorentz invariance are simplified. We show how T-renormalization of primitive diagrams in the Lorentz invariant framework directly relates to causal Riesz distributions. A covariant subtraction rule in momentum space is found, sharply improving upon the BPHZL…
In this article we provide the complete proof of the result announced in arXiv:1210.7717 about the construction of scale invariant non-Gaussian generalized stochastic processes over three dimensional p-adic space. The construction includes that of the associated squared field and our result shows this squared field has a dynamically generated anomalous dimension which rigorously confirms a prediction made more than forty years ago, in an essentially identical situation, by K. G. Wilson. We also prove a mild form of universality for the model under consideration. Our main innovation is that our…
The effective potential $V$ is considered in massless $λϕ^4_4$ theory. The expansion of $V$ in powers of the coupling $λ$ and of the logarithm of the background field $ϕ$ is reorganized in two ways; first as a series in $λ$ alone, then as a series in $\lnϕ$ alone. By applying the renormalization group (RG) equation to $V$, these expansions can be summed. Using the condition $V^\prime(v) = 0$ (where $v$ is the vacuum expectation value of $ϕ$) in conjunction with the expansion of $V$ in powers of $\lnϕ$ fixes $V$ provided $v\neq 0$. In this case, the dependence of $V$ on $ϕ$ drops out and $V$ is…
We present a rigorous proof of the convergence theorem for the Feynman graphs in arbitrary massive Euclidean quantum field theories on non-commutative R^d (NQFT). We give a detailed classification of divergent graphs in some massive NQFT and demonstrate the renormalizability of some of these theories.
In this paper we present an improved RI-type prescription appropriate for the non-perturbative renormalization of gauge invariant nonlocal operators. In this prescription, the non-perturbative vertex function is improved by subtracting unwanted finite lattice spacing ($a$) effects, calculated in lattice perturbation theory. The method is versatile and can be applied to a wide range of fermion and gluon actions, as well as types of nonlocal operators. The presence of operator mixing can also be accommodated. Compared to the standard RI' prescription, this variant can be recast as a supplementar…
Different phenomenological RG transformations based on scaling relations for the derivatives of the inverse correlation length and singular part of the free-energy density are considered. These transformations are tested on the 2D square Ising and Potts models as well as on the 3D simple-cubic Ising model. Variants of RG equations yielding more accurate results than Nightingale's RG scheme are obtained. In the 2D case the finite-size equations which give the {\it exact} values of the critical point or the critical exponent are found.
Scalar field theory at finite temperature is investigated via an improved renormalization group prescription which provides an effective resummation over all possible non-overlapping higher loop graphs. Explicit analyses for the lambda phi^4 theory are performed in d=4 Euclidean space for both low and high temperature limits. We generate a set of coupled equations for the mass parameter and the coupling constant from the renormalization group flow equation. Dimensional reduction and symmetry restoration are also explored with our improved approach.
We present a simple and consistent way to compute correlation functions in interacting theories with non-trivial phase diagram. As an example we show how to consistently compute the four-point function in three dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$-scalar theories. The idea is to perform the path integral by weighting the momentum modes that contribute to it according to their renormalization group (RG) relevance, i.e. we weight each mode according to the value of the running couplings at that scale. In this way, we are able encode in a loop computation the information regarding the RG trajectory along w…
We apply the renormalization group optimized perturbation theory (RGOPT)to evaluate the QCD (matter) pressure at the two-loop level considering three flavors of massless quarks in a dense and cold medium. Already at leading order ($α_s^0$), which builds on the simple one loop (RG resummed) term, our technique provides a non-trivial non-perturbative approximation which is completely renormalization group invariant. At the next-to-leading order the comparison between the RGOPT and the pQCD predictions shows that the former method provides results which are in better agreement with the state-of-t…
Within the realm of contact potentials, the key structures intrinsic of nonperturbative renormalization of $T$-matrices are unraveled using rigorous solutions and an inverse form of algebraic Lippmann-schwinger equation. The intrinsic mismatches between effective field theory power counting and nonperturbative divergence structures are shown for the first time to preclude the conventional counterterm algorithm from working in the renormalization of EFT for $NN$ scattering in nonperturbative regimes.
A new framework for exploiting information about the renormalization group (RG) behavior of gravity in a dynamical context is discussed. The Einstein-Hilbert action is RG-improved by replacing Newton's constant and the cosmological constant by scalar functions in the corresponding Lagrangian density. The position dependence of $G$ and $Λ$ is governed by a RG equation together with an appropriate identification of RG scales with points in spacetime. The dynamics of the fields $G$ and $Λ$ does not admit a Lagrangian description in general. Within the Lagrangian formalism for the gravitational fi…
Within the framework of RG improved inflationary cosmology motivated by asymptotically safe gravity, we study the dynamics of a scalar field which can be interpreted as the Higgs field. The background trajectories of this model can provide sufficient inflationary e-folds and a graceful exit to a radiation dominated phase. We study the possibility of generating primordial curvature perturbations through the Standard Model Higgs boson. This can be achieved under finely tuned parameter choices by making use of the modulated reheating mechanism. The primordial non-gaussianity is expected to be siz…
Using the harmonic superspace background field formulation for general D=4, N=2 super Yang-Mills theories, with matter hypermultiplets in arbitrary representations of the gauge group, we present the first rigorous proof of the N=2 non-renormalization theorem; specifically, the absence of ultraviolet divergences beyond the one-loop level. Another simple consequence of the background field formulation is the absence of the leading non-holomorphic correction to the low-energy effective action at two loops.
Inflation models can be examined by the cosmological observations, WMAP, Planck, BICEP2 and so on. These observations directly constrain the spectral index, $n_s$, and the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$. Besides, from a theoretical point of view, it has been shown that any inflation models asymptote a universal attractor in $(n_s,r)$ plane for a larger scalar-gravity coupling. In this work we consider a simple chaotic inflation model with a scalar quartic and a scalar-curvature interactions. The quantum corrections are introduced for these interactions through the renormalization group. The infla…
The existence of fluctuations together with interactions leads to scale-dependence in the couplings of quantum field theories for the case of quantum fluctuations, and in the couplings of stochastic systems when the fluctuations are of thermal or statistical nature. In both cases the effects of these fluctuations can be accounted for by solutions of the corresponding renormalization group equations. We show how the renormalization group equations are intimately connected with the effective action: given the effective action we can extract the renormalization group equations; given the renormal…

A recently proposed renormalization group approach to dimensional crossover in quasi-one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets is improved and then shown to give identical results, in some cases, to those obtained earlier.
We introduce an extension of a variationally optimized perturbation method, by combining it with renormalization group properties in a straightforward (perturbative) form. This leads to a very transparent and efficient procedure, with a clear improvement of the non-perturbative results with respect to previous similar variational approaches. This is illustrated here by deriving optimized results for the mass gap of the O(2N) Gross-Neveu model, compared with the exactly know results for arbitrary N. At large N, the exact result is reproduced already at the very first order of the modified pertu…
