We study the effects of interference on the quenching dynamics of a one-dimensional spin 1/2 $XY$ model in the presence of a transverse field ($h(t)$) which varies sinusoidally with time as $h = h_0\cos{ωt}$, with $|t| \leq t_f = π/ω$. We also consider the situation where the magnetic field consists of an oscillatory as well as a linearly varying component, i.e., $h(t) = h_0\cos{ωt} + t/τ$. Our purpose is to estimate the defect density and the local entropy density in the final state if the system is initially prepared in its ground state. For a single crossing through the quantum critical point with $h = h_0\cos{ωt}$, the density of defects in the final state is calculated by mapping the dynamics to an equivalent Landau Zener problem by linearizing near the crossing point, and is found to vary as $\sqrtω$ in the limit of small $ω$. On the other hand, the local entropy density is found to attain a maximum as a function of $ω$ near a characteristic scale $ω_0$. Extending to the situation of multiple crossings, we show that the non-trivial interference effects of certain resonance modes solely contribute to the production of defects. Kink density as well as the diagonal entropy density show oscillatory dependence on the number of full cycles of oscillation. Finally, the inclusion of a linear term in the transverse field on top of the oscillatory component, results to a kink density which decreases continuously with $τ$ and $ω$. The entropy density shows monotonous growth with both $τ$ and $ω$, in sharp contrast to the situations studied earlier. We do also propose appropriate scaling relations for the defect density in above situations and compare the results with the numerical results obtained by integrating the Schrodinger equations.
We study the coherent dynamics of a quantum many-body system subject to a time-periodic driving. We argue that in many cases, destructive interference in time makes most of the quantum averages time-periodic, after an initial transient. We discuss in detail the case of a quantum Ising chain periodically driven across the critical point, finding that, as a result of quantum coherence, the system never reaches an infinite temperature state. Floquet resonance effects are moreover observed in the frequency dependence of the various observables, which display a sequence of well-defined peaks or dip…
Using free-fermionic techniques we study the entanglement entropy of a block of contiguous spins in a large finite quantum Ising chain in a transverse field, with couplings of different types: homogeneous, periodically modulated and random. We carry out a systematic study of finite-size effects at the quantum critical point, and evaluate subleading corrections both for open and for periodic boundary conditions. For a block corresponding to a half of a finite chain, the position of the maximum of the entropy as a function of the control parameter (e.g. the transverse field) can define the effec…
We explore the charging of a quantum battery based on spin systems through periodic modulation of a transverse-field like Ising Hamiltonian. In the integrable limit, we find that resonance tunneling can lead to a higher transfer of energy to the battery and better stability of the stored energy at specific drive frequencies. When the integrability is broken in the presence of an additional longitudinal field, we find that the effective Floquet Hamiltonian contains terms which may lead to a global charging of the battery. However, we do not find any quantum advantage in the charging power, thus…
Understanding the equilibration of isolated quantum systems under unitary dynamics is an interesting topic. In this paper, we look at the early time behaviour of periodically and quasi-periodically driven Transverse field Ising chains when and their corresponding dynamical free energies. We study the system under different frequencies and observe how the system evolves with changes in the field amplitudes in both types of oscillations.
By means of a Floquet analysis, we study the quantum dynamics of a fully connected Lipkin-Ising ferromagnet in a periodically driven transverse field showing that thermalization in the steady state is intimately connected to properties of the $N\to \infty$ classical Hamiltonian dynamics. When the dynamics is ergodic, the Floquet spectrum obeys a Wigner-Dyson statistics and the system satisfies the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH): Independently of the initial state, local observables relax to the $T=\infty$ thermal value, and Floquet states are delocalized in the Hilbert space. On th…
Quantum interference lies at the heart of several surprising equilibrium and non-equilibrium phenomena in many-body Physics. Here we discuss two recently explored non-equilibrium scenarios where external periodic drive applied to closed (i.e., not attached to any external bath) quantum many-body systems have apparently opposite effects in respective cases. In one case it freezes/localizes a disorder free system dynamically, while in the other it delocalizes a disordered many-body localized system, and quantum interference is responsible for both the effects. We review these in the perspective …
We study the dynamical fidelity $\mathcal{F} (t)$ and the Loschmidt echo $\mathcal{L} (t)$, following a periodic driving of the transverse magnetic field of a quantum Ising chain (back and forth across the quantum critical point) by calculating the overlap between the initial ground state and the state reached after $n$ periods $τ$. We show that $\log{\mathcal{F}}(nτ)/L$ (the logarithm of the fidelity per-site) reaches a steady value in the asymptotic limit $n\to \infty$, and we derive an exact analytical expression for this quantity. Remarkably, the steady state value of $[\log{\mathcal{F}}(n…
We take a central spin model (CSM), consisting of a one dimensional environmental Ising spin chain and a single qubit connected globally to all the spins of the environment, to study numerically the excess energy (EE) of the environment and the logarithm of decoherence factor namely, dynamical fidelity susceptibility per site (DFSS), associated with the qubit under a periodic driving of the transverse field term of environment across its critical point using the Floquet technique. The coupling to the qubit, prepared in a pure state, with the transverse field of the spin chain yields two sets o…
We numerically study the dynamics of entanglement entropy, induced by an oscillating time periodic driving of the transverse field, h(t), of a one-dimensional quantum Ising chain. We consider several realizations of h(t), and we find a number of results in analogy with entanglement entropy dynamics induced by a sudden quantum quench. After short-time relaxation, the dynamics of entanglement entropy synchronises with h(t), displaying an oscillatory behaviour at the frequency of the driving. Synchronisation in the dynamics of entanglement entropy, is spoiled by the appearance of quasi-revivals w…

The out-of-equilibrium dynamics of many body systems has recently received a burst of interest, also due to experimental implementations. The dynamics of both observables, such as magnetization and susceptibilities, and quantum information related quantities, such as concurrence and entanglement entropy, have been investigated under different protocols bringing the system out of equilibrium. In this paper we focus on the entanglement entropy dynamics under a sinusoidal drive of the transverse magnetic field in the 1D quantum Ising model. We find that the area and the volume law of the entangle…
We consider the dynamics of an XY spin chain subjected to an external transverse field which is periodically quenched between two values. By deriving an exact expression of the Floquet Hamiltonian for this out-of-equilibrium protocol with arbitrary driving frequencies, we show how, after an unfolding of the Floquet spectrum, the parameter space of the system is characterized by alternations between local and non-local regions, corresponding respectively to the absence and presence of Floquet resonances. The boundary lines between regions are obtained analytically from avoided crossings in the …
We study the statistics of the work distribution $P(w)$ in a $d-$dimensional closed quantum system with linear dimension $L$ subjected to a periodic drive with frequency $ω_0$. We show that after an integer number of periods of the drive, the corresponding rate function $I(w)= -\ln[P(w)]/L^d$ satisfies an universal lower bound $I(0)\ge n_d$ and has a zero at $w=Q$, where $n_d$ and $Q$ are the defect density and residual energy generated during the drive. We supplement our results by calculating $I(w)$ for a class of $d$-dimensional integrable models and show that it has oscillatory dependence …
As realized by Kapitza long ago, a rigid pendulum can be stabilized upside down by periodically driving its suspension point with tuned amplitude and frequency. While this dynamical stabilization is feasible in a variety of instances in systems with few degrees of freedom, it is natural to search for generalizations to multi-particle systems. In particular, a fundamental question is whether, by periodically driving a single parameter in a many-body system, one can stabilize an otherwise unstable phase of matter against all possible fluctuations of its microscopic degrees of freedom. In this wo…
We experimentally demonstrate the phenomenon of dynamical many-body freezing in a periodically driven Ising chain. Theoretically [Phys. Rev. B 82, 172402 (2010)], for certain values of the drive parameters all fundamental degrees of freedom contributing to the response dynamics freeze for all time and for arbitrary initial states. Also, since the condition of freezing involves only the drive parameters and not on the quantization of the momentum (i.e., the system-size), our simulation with a small (3-spin) chain captures all salient features of the freezing phenomenon predicted for the infinit…
We study the ground-state properties of a spin-1/2 model on a chain containing four-spin Ising-like interactions in the presence of both transverse and longitudinal magnetic fields. We use entanglement entropy and finite-size scaling methods to obtain the phase diagrams of the model. Our numerical calculations reveal a rich variety of phases and the existence of multi-critical points in the system. We identify phases with both ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic orderings. We also find periodically modulated orderings formed by a cluster of like-spins followed by another cluster of opposite l…
We study numerically the entanglement entropy and spatial correlations of the one dimensional transverse field Ising model with three different perturbations. First, we focus on the out of equilibrium, steady state with an energy current passing through the system. By employing a variety of matrix-product state based methods, we confirm the phase diagram and compute the entanglement entropy. Second, we consider a small perturbation that takes the system away from integrability and calculate the correlations, the central charge and the entanglement entropy. Third, we consider periodically weake…
We show that the correlation functions of a class of periodically driven integrable closed quantum systems approach their steady state value as $n^{-(α+1)/β}$, where $n$ is the number of drive cycles and $α$ and $β$ denote positive integers. We find that generically $β=2$ within a dynamical phase characterized by a fixed $α$; however, its value can change to $β=3$ or $β=4$ either at critical drive frequencies separating two dynamical phases or at special points within a phase. We show that such decays are realized in both driven Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) and one-dimensional (1D) transverse fi…
