Pulsation period of Cepheids should change as stars evolve through the instability strip. Rates of these changes found by other authors based on the decades-long O-C diagrams show rather good agreement with theoretical predictions. We have checked the variability on the scale of a few years on the data recently published by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) for the Large Magellanic Cloud Cepheids and found period changes for 18% of fundamental mode and 41% of first overtone pulsators. It suggest the overtone pulsations are less stable than the fundamental ones. For stars which had the cross-references in the MACHO catalog we have checked if the period change rates derived from the OGLE and the MACHO data are consistent. It was found that there is no correlation and opposite signs of changes in both data sets are more common than the same ones. Many O-C diagrams show nonlinear period changes similarly as for some stars the diagrams derived from the OGLE data only (spanning up to 4100 days) show random fluctuations. These fluctuations are common on the long-term O-C diagrams and we conclude they dominate the diagrams for the timescales of a few thousand of days. The distributions of periods and colors for all Cepheids and for those with statistically significant period changes are the same. Times of maximum light obtained using the MACHO and the OGLE data as well as the examples of O-C diagrams are presented.
We report on the results of a comprehensive search for Cepheid variable stars in the fields photometricallymonitored by the OGLE Galaxy Variability Survey. We identify 742 Cepheids not included in the first release of the OGLE Collection of Galactic Cepheids and reclassify several dozen previously published variables. The upgraded collection comprises 1974 classical, 1625 type II, and 119 anomalous Cepheids located in the area of about 3000 square degrees covering the disk and bulge of the Milky Way. We present the most interesting objects in our sample: an isolated group of long-period double…
We report the discovery of additional 22 RV Tau stars located in the OGLE-II and OGLE-III fields toward the Galactic bulge, increasing to 357 objects the OGLE-III catalog of type II Cepheids in the Galactic center. Four of the newly detected RV Tau stars belong to the RVb class, i.e. they show large-amplitude, long-period modulation of the mean luminosity. In the updated catalog, the relative number of RV Tau stars in the whole sample of the Galactic bulge type II Cepheids is similar to the Magellanic Cloud samples.
We present here a new major part of the OGLE Collection of Variable Stars - OGLE Collection of Galactic Cepheids. The new dataset was extracted from the Galaxy Variability Survey images - a dedicated large-scale survey of the Galactic disk and outer bulge conducted by the OGLE project since 2013. The OGLE collection contains 2721 Cepheids of all types - classical, type II and anomalous. It more than doubles the number of known Galactic classical Cepheids. Due to the long-term monitoring and large number of epochs the selected sample is very pure, generally free from contaminating stars of othe…
The period-luminosity (P-L) relation for Cepheid variables is important in modern astrophysics. In this work, we present the multi-band P-L relations derived from the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) Cepheids, based on the latest release of OGLE-III catalogs. In addition to the V I band mean magnitudes adopted from OGLE-III catalogs, we also cross-matched the LMC and SMC Cepheids to the 2MASS point source catalogs and publicly available Spitzer catalogs from SAGE program. Mean magnitudes for these Cepheids were corrected for extinction using available extinction ma…
The fourteenth part of the OGLE-III Catalog of Variable Stars (OIII-CVS) contains Cepheid variables detected in the OGLE-II and OGLE-III fields toward the Galactic bulge. The catalog is divided into two main categories: 32 classical Cepheids (21 single-mode fundamental-mode F, four first-overtone 1O, two double-mode F/1O, three double-mode 1O/2O and two triple-mode 1O/2O/3O pulsators) and 335 type II Cepheids (156 BL Her, 128 W Vir and 51 RV Tau stars). Six of the type II Cepheids likely belong to the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy. The catalog data include the time-series photometry coll…
Classical Cepheids are key probes of both stellar astrophysics and cosmology as standard candles and pulsating variable stars. It is important to understand Cepheids in unprecedented detail in preparation for upcoming GAIA, JWST and extremely-large telescope observations. Cepheid eclipsing binary stars are ideal tools for achieving this goal, however there are currently only three known systems. One of those systems, OGLE-LMC-CEP1812, raises new questions about the evolution of classical Cepheids because of an apparent age discrepancy between the Cepheid and its red giant companion. We show th…
We have analyzed the double-lined eclipsing binary system OGLE-LMC-CEP-1812 in the LMC and demonstrate that it contains a classical fundamental mode Cepheid pulsating with a period of 1.31 days. The secondary star is a stable giant. We derive the dynamical masses for both stars with an accuracy of 1.5%, making the Cepheid in this system the second classical Cepheid with a very accurate dynamical mass determination, following the OGLE-LMC-CEP-0227 system studied by Pietrzynski et al. (2010). The measured dynamical mass agrees very well with that predicted by pulsation models. We also derive the…
We present a collection of classical, type II, and anomalous Cepheids detected in the OGLE fields toward the Galactic center. The sample contains 87 classical Cepheids pulsating in one, two or three radial modes, 924 type II Cepheids divided into BL Her, W Vir, peculiar W Vir, and RV Tau stars, and 20 anomalous Cepheids - first such objects found in the Galactic bulge. Additionally, we upgrade the OGLE Collection of RR Lyr stars in the Galactic bulge by adding 828 newly identified variables. For all Cepheids and RR Lyr stars, we publish time-series VI photometry obtained during the OGLE-IV pro…
In this article, we test the hypothesis that Cepheids have infrared excesses due to mass loss. We fit a model using the mass-loss rate and the stellar radius as free parameters to optical observations from the OGLE-III survey and infrared observations from the 2MASS and SAGE data sets. The sample of Cepheids have predicted minimum mass-loss rates ranging from zero to $10^{-8}M_\odot$ $yr^{-1}$, where the rates depend on the chosen dust properties. We use the predicted radii to compute the Period-Radius relation for LMC Cepheids, and to estimate the uncertainty caused by the presence of infrare…
We present a census of eclipsing binary systems with classical Cepheid as a component. All such systems known were found in the OGLE collection of classical Cepheids in the Magellanic System. We extend the list of potential candidates adding four new objects found in the OGLE-IV photometric data. One of the new Cepheids in the eclipsing system, OGLE-SMC-CEP-3235, revealed only one eclipse during 15 years of the OGLE photometric monitoring. However, it additionally shows very well pronounced light-time effect indicating that the binarity is real. We also search for the light-time effect in othe…
The status of our work on binary classical cepheid systems in the Large Magellanic Cloud is presented. We report on results from our follow up of two eclipsing binary cepheids OGLE-LMC-CEP-0227 and OGLE-LMC-CEP-1812. Here we presented for the first time confirmation that a third cepheid OGLE-LMC-CEP-2532 is a true eclipsing binary cepheid with a period of 800 days. Two other very good candidates for eclipsing binaries detected during OGLE-IV survey are also discussed.
Context. The Cepheid mass discrepancy, the difference between masses predicted from stellar evolution and stellar pulsation calculations, is a challenge for the understanding of stellar astrophysics. Recent models of the eclipsing binary Cepheid OGLE-LMC-CEP-0227 have suggested that the discrepancy may be resolved. Aims. We explore for what physical parameters do stellar evolution models agree with the measured properties of OGLE-LMC-CEP0227 and compare to canonical stellar evolution models assuming no convective core overshooting. Methods. We construct state-of-the-art stellar evolution model…
We present a new sample of 525 Mira variables in the direction of the Galactic Bulge, expanding on previous samples of 69 and 500 objects, respectively, and thereby concluding our search for new Mira variables in the MACHO Galactic Bulge fields. 364 Miras of the present sample are reported as variable stars for the first time. We have cross-correlated our sample with the sample of Mira stars from the OGLE-III Catalog of Long-Period Variables (LPVs) in the Galactic Bulge and found 146 matches; MACHO and OGLE periods are in very good overall agreement. We present summary data for all stars of th…
The seventh part of the OGLE-III Catalog of Variable Stars (OIII-CVS) consists of 4630 classical Cepheids in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The sample includes 2626 fundamental-mode (F), 1644 first-overtone (1O), 83 second-overtone (2O), 59 double-mode F/1O, 215 double-mode 1O/2O, and three triple-mode classical Cepheids. For each object basic parameters, multi-epoch VI photometry collected within 8 or 13 years of observations, and finding charts are provided in the OGLE Internet archive. We present objects of particular interest: exceptionally numerous sample of single-mode second-overtone…
Anomalous Cepheids (ACs) are metal-deficient, core-helium-burning pulsating stars with masses in the range 1.2-2.2 M_S. Until recently, all known ACs were pure single-mode pulsators. The first candidate for an AC pulsating in more than one radial mode - OGLE-GAL-ACEP-091 - was recently identified in the Milky Way based on the photometric database of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) survey. We analyze this object showing that it is actually a triple-mode pulsator. Its position in the Petersen diagram, the light-curve morphology quantified by Fourier coefficients, and absolute…
We present a nearly complete collection of type II Cepheids in the Magellanic System. The sample consists of 338 objects: 285 and 53 variables in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, respectively. Based on the pulsation periods and light-curve morphology, we classified 118 of our type II Cepheids as BL Herculis, 120 as W Virginis, 34 as peculiar W Virginis, and 66 as RV Tauri stars. For all objects, we publish time-series VI photometry obtained during the OGLE-IV survey, from 2010 to the end of 2017. We present the most interesting individual objects in our collection: 16 type II Cepheids sh…
We report the discovery of the first type II Cepheids (BL Herculis stars) pulsating solely in the first overtone. We found two such objects among tens of millions of stars regularly observed by the OGLE survey in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Our classification and the pulsation mode identification is based on the position of these stars on the period-luminosity and color-magnitude diagrams and on the light curve analysis. We discuss why single-mode first-overtone BL Her pulsators must be very rare. For the two discovered stars we present non-linear models that successfully reproduce their light…
More than a century ago, Henrietta Leavitt discovered the first Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds together with the famous period-luminosity relationship revealed by these stars, which soon after revolutionized our view of the Universe. Over the years, the number of known Cepheids in these galaxies has steadily increased with the breakthrough in the last two decades thanks to the new generation of large-scale long-term sky variability surveys. Here we present the final upgrade of the OGLE Collection of Cepheids in the Magellanic System which already contained the vast majority of known Cepheid…
The eighth part of the OGLE-III Catalog of Variable Stars (OIII-CVS) contains type II Cepheids in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The sample consists of 43 objects, including 17 BL Her, 17 W Vir and 9 RV Tau stars (first examples ever found in the SMC). Seven stars have been classified as peculiar W Vir stars - a recently identified subclass of type II Cepheids. These stars have distinctive light curves, are brighter and bluer than the ordinary W Vir variables. We confirm that a large fraction of the peculiar W Vir stars are members of binary systems. Three type II Cepheids exhibit eclipsing…
We present the final release of the OGLE collection of classical pulsators (Cepheids and RR Lyr stars) in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The sky coverage has been increased from 670 to 765 square degrees compared to the previous edition of the collection. We also add some Cepheids and RR Lyr stars found by the Gaia team and reclassify three Cepheids. Ultimately, our collection consists of 9650 classical Cepheids, 343 type II Cepheids, 278 anomalous Cepheids, and 47828 RR Lyr stars inside and toward the Magellanic System.
We have obtained extensive high-quality spectroscopic observations of the OGLE-LMC-CEP-1718 eclipsing binary system in the Large Magellanic Cloud which Soszynski et al. (2008) had identified as a candidate system for containing two classical Cepheids in orbit. Our spectroscopic data clearly demonstrate binary motion of the Cepheids in a 413-day eccentric orbit, rendering this eclipsing binary system the first ever known to consist of two classical Cepheid variables. After disentangling the four different radial velocity variations in the system we present the orbital solution and the individua…
We present here a nearly complete census of classical Cepheids in the Magellanic System. The sample extends the set of Cepheids published in the past by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) to the outer regions of the Large (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The entire collection consists of 9535 Cepheids of which 4620 belong to the LMC and 4915 are members of the SMC. We provide the I- and V-band time-series photometry of the published Cepheids, their finding charts, and basic observational parameters. Based on this unique OGLE sample of Cepheids we present updated period-…
We present here the first spectroscopic and photometric analysis of the double-lined eclipsing binary containing the classical, first-overtone Cepheid OGLE-LMC-CEP-2532 (MACHO 81.8997.87). The system has an orbital period of 800 days and the Cepheid is pulsating with a period of 2.035 days. Using spectroscopic data from three high-class telescopes and photometry from three surveys spanning 7500 days we are able to derive the dynamical masses for both stars with an accuracy better than 3%. This makes the Cepheid in this system one of a few classical Cepheids with an accurate dynamical mass dete…
We present a detailed study of the classical Cepheid in the double-lined, highly eccentric eclipsing binary system OGLE-LMC562.05.9009. The Cepheid is a fundamental mode pulsator with a period of 2.988 days. The orbital period of the system is 1550 days. Using spectroscopic data from three 4-8-m telescopes and photometry spanning 22 years, we were able to derive the dynamical masses and radii of both stars with exquisite accuracy. Both stars in the system are very similar in mass, radius and color, but the companion is a stable, non-pulsating star. The Cepheid is slightly more massive and bigg…
A novel method of analysis of double-lined eclipsing binaries containing a radially pulsating star is presented. The combined pulsating-eclipsing light curve is built up from a purely eclipsing light curve grid created using an existing modeling tool. For every pulsation phase the instantaneous radius and surface brightness are taken into account, being calculated from the disentangled radial velocity curve of the pulsating star and from its out-of-eclipse pulsational light curve and the light ratio of the components, respectively. The best model is found using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo met…
The carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) ratio of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars constitutes an important index of evolutionary and environment/metallicity factor. We develop a method for mass C/O classification of AGBs in photometric surveys without using periods. For this purpose we rely on the slopes in the tracks of individual stars in the colour-magnitude diagram. We demonstrate that our method enables the separation of C-rich and O-rich AGB stars with little confusion. For the Magellanic Clouds we demonstrate that this method works for several photometric surveys and filter combinations. As we re…
We present the results of a study of the type II Cepheid ($P_{puls} = 4.974 d$) in the eclipsing binary system OGLE-LMC-T2CEP-098 ($P_{orb} = 397.2 d$). The Cepheid belongs to the peculiar W Vir group, for which the evolutionary status is virtually unknown. It is the first single-lined system with a pulsating component analyzed using the method developed by Pilecki et al. (2013). We show that the presence of a pulsator makes it possible to derive accurate physical parameters of the stars even if radial velocities can be measured for only one of the components. We have used four different metho…
Detailed knowledge of the variability of classical Cepheids, in particular their modulations and mode composition, provides crucial insight into stellar structure and pulsation. However, tiny modulations of the dominant radial-mode pulsation were recently found to be very frequent, possibly ubiquitous in Cepheids, which makes secondary modes difficult to detect and analyse, since these modulations can easily mask the potentially weak secondary modes. The aim of this study is to re-investigate the secondary mode content in the sample of OGLE-III and -IV single-mode classical Cepheids using kern…
We performed a new and accurate fit of light and radial velocity curves of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheid --OGLE-LMC-CEP-0227-- belonging to a detached double-lined eclipsing binary system. We computed several sets of nonlinear, convective models covering a broad range in stellar mass, effective temperature and in chemical composition. The comparison between theory and observations indicates that current theoretical framework accounts for luminosity --V and I band-- and radial velocity variations over the entire pulsation cycle. Predicted pulsation mass --M=4.14+-0.06 Mo-- and mean e…
We present the analysis of a peculiar W~Virginis (pWVir) type-II Cepheid, OGLE-LMC-T2CEP-211 ($P_{puls}=9.393\,d$), in a double-lined binary system ($P_{orb}=242\,d$), which shed light on virtually unknown evolutionary status and structure of pWVir stars. The dynamical mass of the Cepheid (first ever for a type-II Cepheid) is $0.64\pm{}0.02\,M_\odot$ and the radius $R=25.1\pm{}0.3\,R_\odot$. The companion is a massive ($5.67\,M_\odot$) main-sequence star obscured by a disk. Such configuration suggests a mass transfer in the system history. We found that originally the system ($P_{orb}^{init}=1…
We present a sample of the most interesting classical Cepheids selected from the OGLE collection of classical Cepheids in the Magellanic System. The main selection criterion for this sample was the presence of non-standard, unique pulsational properties. The sample contains the first known double-mode Cepheid pulsating in the second- and third-overtone modes and a large number of objects with non-radial modes excited. We also found Cepheids revealing Blazhko-like light curve modulation, objects ceasing pulsations or showing atypical shapes of their light curves. Additionally, the status of sev…
We present results from the Large Magellanic Cloud Near-infrared Synoptic Survey (LMCNISS) for classical and type II Cepheid variables that were identified by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-III) catalogue. Multiwavelength time-series data for classical Cepheid variables are used to study light-curve structures as a function of period and wavelength. We exploit a sample of $\sim$1400 classical and $\sim$80 type II Cepheid variables to derive Period--Wesenheit relations that combine both optical and near-infrared data. The new Period--Luminosity and Wesenheit relations are us…
In this paper we present multi-band period-luminosity (P-L) relations for fundamental mode Cepheids in the SMC. The optical VI-band mean magnitudes for these SMC Cepheids were taken from the third phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-III) catalog. We also matched the OGLE-III SMC Cepheids to 2MASS and SAGE-SMC catalog to derive mean magnitudes in the JHK-bands and the four {\it Spitzer} IRAC bands, respectively. All photometry was corrected for extinction by adopting the Zaritsky's extinction map. Cepheids with periods smaller than $\sim2.5$ days were removed from the sa…
We analyse photometry of $\sim$2000 Galactic Cepheids available in the OGLE Collection of Variable Stars. We analyse both Galactic disk and Galactic bulge fields; stars classified both as single- and multi-periodic. Our goal was to search for additional low-amplitude variability. We extend the sample of multi-mode radial pulsators by identifying ten new candidates for double-mode and six new candidates for triple-mode pulsation. In the first overtone OGLE sample, we found twelve Cepheids with additional periodicity having period ratio $P_{\rm x}/P_{\rm 1O}\in (0.60,\, 0.65)$. These periodiciti…
We present a detailed analysis of Magellanic Bridge Cepheid sample constructed using the OGLE Collection of Variable Stars. Our updated Bridge sample contains 10 classical and 13 anomalous Cepheids. We calculate their individual distances using optical period--Wesenheit relations and construct three-dimensional maps. Classical Cepheids on-sky locations match very well neutral hydrogen and young stars distributions, thus they add to the overall Bridge young population. In three dimensions, eight out of ten classical Cepheids form a bridge-like connection between the Magellanic Clouds. The other…
We share the most up-to-date, carefully verified list of classical Cepheids residing in the Galaxy. Based on long-term OGLE experience in the field of variable stars, we have inspected candidates for Cepheids from surveys such as ASAS, ASAS-SN, ATLAS, Gaia, NSVS, VVV, WISE, ZTF, among others, and also known sources from the General Catalogue of Variable Stars. Only objects confirmed in the optical range as classical Cepheids are included in the list. We provide Gaia EDR3 identifications of the stars. Purity of the sample exceeds 97 per cent, while its completeness is of about 88 per cent down …
Multi-mode Cepheids pulsate simultaneously in more than one mode of oscillation. They provide an independent means to test stellar models and pulsation theories. They can also be used to derive metallicities. In recent years, the number of known multi-mode Cepheids has increased dramatically with the discovery of a large number of Galactic double-mode Cepheids. To date, 209 double-mode Cepheids have been detected in the Galactic bulge and disk, mostly based on the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment's (OGLE) catalog. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive search for double-mode Cepheid…
We present multi-band Period-Luminosity (PL) relations for first-overtone mode Cepheids in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We derive optical band PL relations and the Wesenheit function using $VI$ mean magnitudes from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-III) survey. We cross-match OGLE-III first-overtone mode Cepheids to the 2MASS and SAGE-SMC catalogs to derive PL relations at near-infrared ($JHK_s$) and mid-infrared ($3.6~\&~4.5μ\mathrm{m}$) wavelengths. We test for possible non-linearities in these PL relations using robust statistical tests and find a significant break onl…
Based on new observations and improved modeling techniques, we have reanalyzed seven Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Improved physical parameters have been determined for the exotic system OGLE LMC-CEP-1718 composed of two first-overtone Cepheids and a completely new model was obtained for the OGLE LMC-CEP-1812 classical Cepheid. This is now the shortest period Cepheid for which the projection factor is measured. The typical accuracy of our dynamical masses and radii determinations is 1%. The radii of the six classical Cepheids follow period--radius relations in the literature. Our ver…
We present a collection of 250 anomalous Cepheids (ACs) discovered in the OGLE-IV fields toward the Large (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The LMC sample is an extension of the OGLE-III Catalog of ACs published in 2008, while the SMC sample contains the first known bona fide ACs in this galaxy. The total sample is composed of 141 ACs in the LMC and 109 ACs in the SMC. All these stars pulsate in single modes: fundamental (174 objects) or first overtone (76 objects). Additionally, we report the discovery of four ACs located in the foreground of the Magellanic Clouds. These are the first f…
We have analysed the photometry of 924 type II Cepheids from the Galactic bulge observed by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. Our goal was to detect and analyse various dynamical phenomena, including, e.g. multi-mode pulsation, period-doubled pulsation, period-k pulsation, or quasi-periodic modulation of pulsation. First examples of double-mode BL Her-type stars, pulsating simultaneously in the fundamental and first overtone modes are reported. Two double-mode pulsators are not isolated cases however, but form an extension of recently identified class of long-period RRd stars. Peri…
In this work we matched the AKARI archival data to the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment-III (OGLE-III) catalog to derive the mid-infrared period luminosity (PL) relations for Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) Cepheids. Mismatched AKARI sources were eliminated using random-phase colors obtained from the full I-band light curves from OGLE-III. It was possible to derive PL relations in the N3 and N4 bands only, although the S7, S11, L15, and L24 band data were also tested. Random-phase correction was included when deriving the PL relation in the N3 and N4 bands using the available time of obse…
In this paper, we derive the period-luminosity (P-L) relation for Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheids based on mid-infrared AKARI observations. AKARI's IRC sources were matched to the OGLE-III LMC Cepheid catalog. Together with the available I band light curves from the OGLE-III catalog, potential false matches were removed from the sample. This procedure excluded most of the sources in the S7 and S11 bands: hence only the P-L relation in the N3 band was derived in this paper. Random-phase corrections were included in deriving the P-L relation for the single epoch AKARI data, even though the…
Recent studies have revealed a hitherto unknown complexity of Cepheid pulsation. We implement local kernel regression to search for both period and amplitude modulations simultaneously in continuous time and to investigate their detectability, and test this new method on 53 classical Cepheids from the OGLE-III catalog. We determine confidence intervals using parametric and non-parametric bootstrap sampling to estimate significance and investigate multi-periodicity using a modified pre-whitening approach that relies on time-dependent light curve parameters. We find a wide variety of period and …
We have analysed photometric data for the first overtone Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds from the OGLE collection. In more than 500 stars, we have detected additional variability with periods shorter than the first overtone period and period ratios in the (0.60, 0.65) range. The sample includes double periodic stars detected previously by the OGLE team as well as new discoveries. In the Petersen diagram, these stars form three well-separated sequences. In some stars, we have found simultaneously two close periodicities corresponding to two sequences in the Petersen diagram. In a significant …
We present multiphase Period-Color/Amplitude-Color/Period-Luminosity relations using OGLE III and Galactic Cepheid data and compare with state of the art theoretical pulsation models. Using this new way to compare models and observations, we find convincing evidence that both Period-Color and Period-Luminosity Relations as a function of phase are dynamic and highly nonlinear at certain pulsation phases. We extend this to a multiphase Wesenheit function and find the same result. Hence our results cannot be due to reddening errors. We present statistical tests and the urls of movies depicting th…
Data on multimode Cepheids from OGLE-III catalog of the LMC Cepheids are confronted with results from model calculations. Models whose radial mode periods are consistent with observation are not always in agreement with published evolutionary models. Nonradial mode interpretation is considered for the cases of unusual period ratios. The greatest challenge for stellar pulsation theory is explanation of double-mode pulsators with period ratios near 0.6.
We report the discovery of a surprising binary configuration of the double-mode Cepheid OGLE-LMC-CEP-1347 pulsating in the first (P_1=0.690d) and second overtone (P_2=0.556d) modes. The orbital period (P_orb=59d) of the system is five times shorter than the shortest known to date (310d) for a binary Cepheid. The Cepheid itself is also the shortest-period one ever found in a binary system and the first double-mode Cepheid in a spectroscopically double-lined binary. OGLE-LMC-CEP-1347 is most probably on its first crossing through the instability strip, as inferred from both its short period and …
The investigation of the non-linearity of the Leavitt law is a topic that began more than seven decades ago, when some of the studies in this field found that the Leavitt law has a break at about ten days. The goal of this work is to investigate a possible statistical cause of this non-linearity. By applying linear regressions to OGLE-II and OGLE-IV data, we find that, in order to obtain the Leavitt law by using linear regression, robust techniques to deal with influential points and/or outliers are needed instead of the ordinary least-squares regression traditionally used. In particular, by u…
We describe variable stars found in the data collected during the OGLE-III Shallow Survey covering the I-band magnitude range from 9.7 mag to 14.5 mag. The main result is the extension of period--luminosity relations for Cepheids up to 134 days. We also detected 82 binary systems and 110 long-period variables not present in the main OGLE catalogs. Additionally 558 objects were selected as candidates for miscellaneous variables.
A search for variable stars with ultra-low amplitudes (ULA), in the millimag range, has been made in the combined MACHO and OGLE data bases in the broad vicinity of the Cepheid instability strip in the HR diagram. A total of 25 singly periodic and 4 multiply periodic ULA objects has been uncovered. Our analysis does not allow us to distinguish between pulsational and ellipsoidal (binary) variability, nor between LMC and foreground objects. However, the objects are strongly clustered and appear to be associated with the pulsational instability strips of LMC Pop. I and II variables. When combine…
We present a comparison of the Gaia DR1 samples of pulsating variable stars - Cepheids and RR Lyrae type - with the OGLE Collection of Variable Stars aiming at the characterization of the Gaia mission performance in the stellar variability domain. Out of 575 Cepheids and 2322 RR Lyrae candidates from the Gaia DR1 samples located in the OGLE footprint in the sky, 559 Cepheids and 2302 RR Lyrae stars are genuine pulsators of these types. The number of misclassified stars is low indicating reliable performance of the Gaia data pipeline. The completeness of the Gaia DR1 samples of Cepheids and RR …
The recent discovery and analysis of a classical Cepheid in the well detached, double-lined, eclipsing binary OGLE-LMC-CEP0227, has provided the first determination of the dynamical mass of a classical Cepheid variable to an unprecedented 1% accuracy. We show here that modern stellar evolution models widely employed to study Galactic and extragalactic stellar systems, are able to match simultaneously mass and radius (and effective temperature) of the two components with a single value for the age of the system, without any specific fine-tuning. Our conclusion is that there is no discrepancy be…
Period-colour and amplitude-colour (PCAC) relations can be used to probe both the hydrodynamics of outer envelope structure and evolutionary status of Cepheids and RR Lyraes. In this work, we incorporate the PCAC relations for RR Lyraes, BL Her, W Vir and classical Cepheids in a single unifying theory that involves the interaction of the hydrogen ionization front (HIF) and stellar photosphere and the theory of stellar evolution. PC relations for RR Lyraes and classical Cepheids using OGLE-IV data are found to be consistent with this theory: RR Lyraes have shallow/sloped relations at minimum/ma…
