Motivated by the gluon-chain model of flux tube formation, we compute and diagonalize the transfer matrix in lattice SU(2) gauge theory for states containing heavy static quark-antiquark sources, with separations up to one fermi. The elements of the transfer matrix are calculated by variational Monte Carlo methods, in a basis of states obtained by acting on the vacuum state with zero, one, and two-gluon operators in Coulomb gauge. The color Coulomb potential is obtained from the zero gluon to zero gluon element of the transfer matrix, and it is well-known that while this potential is asymptotically linear, it has a slope which is two to three times larger than the standard asymptotic string tension. We show that the addition of one and two gluon states results in a potential which is still linear, but the disagreement with the standard asymptotic string tension is reduced to 38% at the largest lattice coupling we have studied.
The flux tube between a quark and an antiquark in Coulomb gauge is imagined in the gluon-chain model as a sequence of constituent gluons bound together by Coulombic nearest-neighbor interactions. We diagonalize the transfer matrix in SU(2) lattice gauge theory in a finite basis of states containing a static quark-antiquark pair together with zero, one, and two gluons in Coulomb gauge. We show that while the string tension of the color-Coulomb potential (obtained from the zero-gluon to zero-gluon element of the transfer matrix) overshoots the true asymptotic string tension by a factor of about …
In Coulomb gauge a longitudinal electric field is generated instantaneously with the creation of a static quark-antiquark pair. The field due to the quarks is a sum of two contributions, one from the quark and one from the antiquark, and there is no obvious reason that this sum should fall off exponentially with distance from the sources. We show here, however, from numerical simulations in pure SU(2) lattice gauge theory, that the color Coulomb electric field does in fact fall off exponentially with transverse distance away from a line joining static quark-antiquark sources, indicating the ex…
We consider the four point connected correlator representing a static quark-antiquark pair separated by a spatial distance R, propagating for a Euclidean time T. This function is computed by lattice Monte Carlo in SU(2) pure gauge theory at lattice couplings $β=2.2$ and $β=2.5$ in both Coulomb and Landau gauges. The Coulomb gauge correlator is well behaved, and is dominated at large T by a state whose energy grows linearly as $σR$, with $σ$ the known asymptotic string tension. The connected correlator in Landau gauge behaves differently. At intermediate R there is clear evidence of a linear po…
Thermodynamics of a heavy quark-antiquark pair in SU(3)-QCD is studied both below and above the deconfinement critical temperature $T_c$. In the quenched case, a model of the string passing through heavy valence gluons yields a correct estimate of $T_c$ and the critical behavior of the string tension below $T_c$. For two light flavors, entropy and internal energy below $T_c$ can be obtained from the partition function of heavy-light mesons and baryons. To calculate the free energy of the system above $T_c$, we apply second-order perturbation theory in the interaction of the quark-gluon plasma …
The quark sector of Coulomb gauge quantum chromodynamics is considered within the functional integral approach. The quark contributions to the Dyson-Schwinger equations are derived and one-loop perturbative results for the two-point functions are presented. The problem of confinement is addressed in the heavy quark limit, by rewriting the generating functional of quantum chromodynamics in terms of a heavy quark mass expansion. By restricting to leading order in this expansion and considering only the two-point functions of the Yang-Mills sector, the rainbow-ladder approximation to the gap and …
Recently, an instantaneous approximation to the Bethe-Salpeter formalism for the analysis of bound states in quantum field theory has been proposed which retains, in contrast to the Salpeter equation, as far as possible the exact propagators of the bound-state constituents, extracted nonperturbatively from Dyson-Schwinger equations or lattice gauge theory. The implications of this improvement for the solutions of this bound-state equation, that is, the spectrum of the mass eigenvalues of its bound states and the corresponding wave functions, when considering the quark propagators arising in qu…
We suggest that Hamiltonian matrix elements between physical states in QCD might be approximated, in Coulomb gauge, by "lattice-improved" tree diagrams; i.e. tree diagram contributions with dressed ghost, transverse gluon, and Coulomb propagators obtained from lattice simulations. Such matrix elements can be applied to a truncated-basis treatment of hadronic states which include constituent gluons. As an illustration, we apply this hybrid approach to the heavy quark potential, for quark-antiquark separations up to 2.4 fm. The Coulomb string tension in SU(3) gauge theory is about a factor of fo…
We compare the physical potential $V_D(R)$ of an external quark-antiquark pair in the representation $D$ of SU(N), to the color-Coulomb potential $V_{\rm coul}(R)$ which is the instantaneous part of the 44-component of the gluon propagator in Coulomb gauge, $D_{44}(\vx,t) = V_{\rm coul}(|\vx|) δ(t)$ + (non-instantaneous). We show that if $V_D(R)$ is confining, $\lim_{R \to \infty}V_D(R) = + \infty$, then the inequality $V_D(R) \leq - C_D V_{\rm coul}(R)$ holds asymptotically at large $R$, where $C_D > 0$ is the Casimir in the representation $D$. This implies that $ - V_{\rm coul}(R)$ is also c…
We study the approach, initiated by Marinari et al., to the static inter-quark potential based on Polyakov lines of finite temporal extent, evaluated in Coulomb gauge. We show that, at small spatial separations, the potential can be understood as being between two separately gauge invariant colour charges. At larger separations Gribov copies obstruct the non-perturbative identification of individually gauge invariant colour states. We demonstrate, for the first time, how gauge invariance can be maintained quite generally by averaging over Gribov copies. This allows us to extend the analysis of…
We investigate the static $\overline{Q}Q$-potential for $N_f = 2+1$ QCD at the physical point in the presence of a constant and uniform external magnetic field. The potential is found to be anisotropic and steeper in the directions transverse to the magnetic field than in the longitudinal one. In particular, when compared to the standard case with zero background field, the string tension increases (decreases) in the transverse (longitudinal) direction, while the absolute value of the Coulomb coupling and the Sommer parameter show an opposite behavior.
We present a state-of-the-art determination of the complex valued static quark-antiquark potential at phenomenologically relevant temperatures around the deconfinement phase transition. Its values are obtained from non-perturbative lattice QCD simulations using spectral functions extracted via a novel Bayesian inference prescription. We find that the real part, both in a gluonic medium as well as in realistic QCD with light $u$, $d$ and $s$ quarks, lies close to the color singlet free energies in Coulomb gauge and shows Debye screening above the (pseudo) critical temperature $T_c$. The imagina…
In Coulomb gauge there is a longitudinal color electric field associated with a static quark-antiquark pair. We have measured the spatial distribution of this field, and find that it falls off exponentially with transverse distance from a line joining the two quarks. In other words there is a Coulomb flux tube, with a width that is somewhat smaller than that of the minimal energy flux tube associated with the asymptotic string tension. A confinement criterion for gauge theories with matter fields is also proposed.
We study the static potential between external quark-antiquark pairs in a strongly coupled gauge theory with a large number of colors and massive dynamical flavors, using a dual string description. When the constituent mass of the dynamical quarks is set below a certain critical value, we find a first order phase transition between a linear and a Coulomb-like regime. Above the critical mass the two phases are smoothly connected. We also study the dependence on the theory parameters of the quark-antiquark separation at which the static configuration decays into specific static-dynamical mesons.
We study trial states modelling the heavy quark-antiquark ground state in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. A state describing the flux tube between quarks as a thin string of glue is found to be a poor description of the continuum ground state; the infinitesimal thickness of the string leads to UV artifacts which suppress the overlap with the ground state. Contrastingly, a state which surrounds the quarks with non-abelian Coulomb fields is found to have a good overlap with the ground state for all charge separations. In fact, the overlap increases as the lattice regulator is removed. This opens up the…
In this paper we describe gauge invariant multi-quark states generalising the path integral framework developed by Parrinello, Jona-Lasinio and Zwanziger to amend the Faddeev-Popov approach. This allows us to produce states such that, in a limit which we call the ice-limit, fermions are dressed with glue exclusively from the fundamental modular region associated with Coulomb gauge. The limit can be taken analytically without difficulties, avoiding the Gribov problem. This is llustrated by an unambiguous construction of gauge invariant mesonic states for which we simulate the static quark--anti…
We study the chiral crossover, the spectra of light-light and of static-light mesons and the deconfinement crossover at finite temperature T. Our framework is the confining and chiral invariant quark model, related to truncated Coulomb gauge QCD. Since we are dealing with light quarks, where the linear potential dominates the quark condensate and the spectrum, we only specialize in the linear confining potential for the quark-antiquark interaction. We utilize T dependent string tensions previously fitted from lattice QCD data, and a fit of previously computed dynamically generated constituent …
Colorelectric and Colormagnetic structure of the flux tubes, connecting heavy quark and antiquark, is investigated in the framework of the Field Correlator method which describes all resulting fields in terms of correlators $D^E$ and $D^E_1$. The latter have been computed via gluelumps, which allows to predict the resulting distribution of color fields $\mathbf{E} (\mathbf{r}),$ and colormagnetic currents $\mathbf{k} (\mathbf{r})$ in the flux tubes. It is shown, that at large distances $r\gg λ\approx 0.2$ fm the whole structure of fields and relations between them is similar to that of the dua…
We estimate the Coulomb energy of static quarks from a Monte Carlo calculation of the correlator of timelike link variables in Coulomb gauge. We find, in agreement with Cucchieri and Zwanziger, that this energy grows linearly with distance at large quark separations. The corresponding string tension, however, is several times greater than the accepted asymptotic string tension, indicating that a state containing only static sources, with no constituent gluons, is not the lowest energy flux tube state. The Coulomb energy is also measured on thermalized lattices with center vortices removed by t…
We study the color correlation between static quark and antiquark ($q\bar q$) in the confined phase via reduced density matrices $ρ$ defined in color space. We adopt the standard Wilson gauge action and perform quenched calculations with the Coulomb gauge condition for reduced density matrices. The spatial volumes are $L^3 = 8^3$, $16^3$, $32^3$ and $48^3$, with the gauge couplings $β= 5.7$, 5.8 and 6.0. Each element of the reduced density matrix in the sub space of quarks' color degrees of freedom of the $q\bar q$ pair is calculated from staples defined by link variables. As a result, we find…
I present some new results regarding confinement as it appears in Coulomb gauge. It is found that: i) a recently proposed Yang-Mills vacuum wavefunctional in temporal gauge and 2+1 dimensions yields a Coulomb-gauge ghost propagator and linear Coulomb potential in good agreement with lattice Monte Carlo results; ii) adding a few constituent gluons to heavy quark-antiquark states brings the interaction energy much closer to that of the static quark potential, and suggests the beginnings of gluon-chain formation at roughly one fermi; iii) a perturbative approach to Faddeev-Popov eigenvalues indic…
We discuss color screening in 2+1 flavor QCD in terms of free energies of a static quark-antiquark pair. Thermal modifications of long distance correlations in quark-antiquark systems are studied in terms of static meson correlators. We calculate the Polyakov loop correlator, the color-singlet Wilson line correlator in Coulomb gauge and the cyclic Wilson loop on lattices using the HISQ/Tree action and almost physical quark mases with $N_τ= 4, 6, 8, 10, 12$. We present results in the continuum limit for temperatures up to $T \lesssim 650$ MeV and discuss the linear divergence of the cyclic Wils…
Using lattice Monte Carlo simulations of SU(3) pure gauge theory, we determine the spatial distribution of all components of the color fields created by a static quark and antiquark. We identify the components of the measured chromoelectric field transverse to the line connecting the quark-antiquark pair with the transverse components of an effective Coulomb-like field $\vec{E}^C $ associated with the quark sources. Subtracting $\vec{E}^C$ from the total simulated chromoelectric field $\vec{E}$ yields a non-perturbative, primarily longitudinal chromoelectric field $\vec{E}^{NP}$, which we iden…
With the aim of clarification of color correlations among quarks, we investigate the color correlation between a static quark and an antiquark (static $q\bar q$) below and above the phase transition temperature $T_c$ through the entanglement entropy(EE). By a quenched lattice QCD calculation on an anisotropic lattice adopting the standard Wilson gauge action in the Coulomb gauge, we compute a reduced density matrix $ρ$ defined in the color space, and the entanglement entropy $S_{\rm EE}$ constructed from $ρ$. The spatial volume is $L^3 = 24^3$ and the temporal extents are $N_T = 12,13,14,15,16…
We study the QCD phase diagram, in particular we study the critical points of the two main QCD phase transitions, confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. Confinement drives chiral symmetry breaking, and, due to the finite quark mass, at small density both transitions are a crossover, while they are a first or second order phase transition in large density. We study the QCD phase diagram with a quark potential model including both confinement and chiral symmetry. We present the confinement of quark fields into a flux tube, obtained in SU(3) quenched lattice QCD, to illustrate the importance o…
