A detailed analysis of the classical nonlinear dynamics of a single driven square potential barrier with harmonically oscillating position is performed. The system exhibits dynamical trapping which is associated with the existence of a stable island in phase space. Due to the unstable periodic orbits of the KAM-structure, the driven barrier is a chaotic scatterer and shows stickiness of scattering trajectories in the vicinity of the stable island. The transmission function of a suitably prepared ensemble yields results which are very similar to tunneling resonances in the quantum mechanical regime. However, the origin of these resonances is different in the classical regime.
Linear response theory relates the response of a system to the power-spectrum of its fluctuations. However, the response to external driving in realistic models exhibits a pronounced non-linear blurring of the spectral line-shape. Considering a driven Bose-Hubbard trimer model we figure out what is the hidden time scale that controls this smearing effect. Contrary to conventional wisdom, the Fermi-golden-rule picture fails miserably in predicting the non-linear width of the transitions. Instead, if the system has a classical limit, the determination of the hidden time scale requires taking int…
The noise-enhanced trapping is a surprising phenomenon that has already been studied in chaotic scattering problems where the noise affects the physical variables but not the parameters of the system. Following this research, in this work we provide strong numerical evidence to show that an additional mechanism that enhances the trapping arises when the noise influences the energy of the system. For this purpose, we have included a source of Gaussian white noise in the Hénon-Heiles system, which is a paradigmatic example of open Hamiltonian system. For a particular value of the noise intensity…
The dynamics in three-dimensional billiards leads, using a Poincaré section, to a four-dimensional map which is challenging to visualize. By means of the recently introduced 3D phase-space slices an intuitive representation of the organization of the mixed phase space with regular and chaotic dynamics is obtained. Of particular interest for applications are constraints to classical transport between different regions of phase space which manifest in the statistics of Poincaré recurrence times. For a 3D paraboloid billiard we observe a slow power-law decay caused by long-trapped trajectories wh…
A chaotic autonomous Hamiltonian systems, perturbed by small damping and small external force, harmonically dependent on time, can acquire a strange attractor with properties similar to that of the canonical distribution - the Gibbs attractor. The evolution of the energy in such systems can be described as the energy diffusion. For the nonlinear Pullen - Edmonds oscillator with two degrees of freedom the properties of the Gibbs attractor and their dependence on parameters of the perturbation are studied both analytically and numerically.
We study the occurence of delay mechanisms other than periodic orbits in systems with time dependent potentials that exhibit chaotic scattering. By using as model system two harmonically oscillating disks on a plane, we have found the existence of a mechanism not related to the periodic orbits of the system, that delays trajectories in the scattering region. This mechanism creates a fractal-like structure in the scattering functions and can possibly occur in several time-dependent scattering systems.
The stationary and highly non-stationary resonant dynamics of the harmonically forced pendulum are described in the framework of a semi-inverse procedure combined with the Limiting Phase Trajectory concept. This procedure, implying only existence of slow time scale, permits to avoid any restriction on the oscillation amplitudes. The main results relating to the dynamical bifurcation thresholds are represented in a closed form. The small parameter defining the separation of the time scales is naturally identified in the analytical procedure. Considering the pendulum frequency as the control par…
The energy evolution of a quantum chaotic system under the perturbation that harmonically depends on time is studied for the case of large perturbation, in which the rate of transition calculated from the Fermi golden rule exceeds the frequency of perturbation. It is shown that the energy evolution retains its diffusive character, with the diffusion coefficient that is asymptotically proportional to the magnitude of perturbation and to the square root of the density of states. The results are supported by numerical calculation. They imply the absence of the quantum-classical correspondence for…
In this letter we consider the phase diffusion of a harmonically driven undamped pendulum and show that it is anomalous in the strong sense. The role played by the fractal properties of the phase space is highlighted, providing an illustration of the link between deterministic chaos and anomalous transport. Finally, we build a stochastic model which reproduces most properties of the original Hamiltonian system by alternating ballistic flights and random diffusion.
We show that noise enhances the trapping of trajectories in scattering systems. In fully chaotic systems, the decay rate can decrease with increasing noise due to a generic mismatch between the noiseless escape rate and the value predicted by the Liouville measure of the exit set. In Hamiltonian systems with mixed phase space we show that noise leads to a slower algebraic decay due to trajectories performing a random walk inside Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser islands. We argue that these noise-enhanced trapping mechanisms exist in most scattering systems and are likely to be dominant for small noise …
Control schemes for dynamical systems typically involve stabilizing unstable periodic orbits. In this paper we introduce a new paradigm of control that involves `trapping' the dynamics arbitrarily close to any desired trajectory. This is achieved by a state-dependent dynamical selection of the input signal applied to the driven nonlinear system. An emergent property of the trapping process is that the signal changes in a chaotic sequence: a manifestation of chaos-induced order. The simplicity of the control scheme makes it easily implementable in experimental systems.
The dynamics of three coupled bosonic wells (trimer) containing $N$ bosons is investigated within a standard (mean-field) semiclassical picture based on the coherent-state method. Various periodic solutions (configured as $π$-like, dimerlike and vortex states) representing collective modes are obtained analitically when the fixed points of trimer dynamics are identified on the $N$=const submanifold in the phase space. Hyperbolic, maximum and minimum points are recognized in the fixed-point set by studying the Hessian signature of the trimer Hamiltonian. The system dynamics in the neighbourhood…
The energy evolution of a quantum chaotic system under the perturbation that harmonically depends on time is studied for the case of large perturbation, in which the rate of transition calculated from the Fermi golden rule (FGR) is about or exceeds the frequency of perturbation. For this case the models of Hamiltonian with random non-correlated matrix elements demonstrate that the energy evolution retains its diffusive character, but the rate of diffusion increases slower than the square of the magnitude of perturbation, thus destroying the quantum-classical correspondence for the energy diffu…
We investigate the dynamics of passive particles in a two-dimensional incompressible open flow composed of a fixed topographical point vortex and a background current with a periodic component. The tracer dynamics is found to be typically chaotic in a mixing region and regular in far upstream and downstream regions of the flow. Chaotic advection of tracers is proven to be of a homoclinic nature with transversal intersections of stable and unstable manifolds of the saddle point. In spite of simplicity of the flow, chaotic trajectories are very complicated alternatively sticking nearby boundarie…
The statistics of Poincaré recurrence times in Hamiltonian systems typically shows a power-law decay with chaotic trajectories sticking to some phase-space regions for long times. For higher-dimensional systems the mechanism of this power-law trapping is still unknown. We investigate trapped orbits of a generic 4D symplectic map in phase space and frequency space and find that, in contrast to 2D maps, the trapping is (i) not due to a hierarchy in phase space. Instead, it occurs at the surface of the regular region, (ii) outside of the Arnold web. The chaotic dynamics in this sticky region is (…
Stickiness is a well known phenomenon in which chaotic orbits expend an expressive amount of time in specific regions of the chaotic sea. This phenomenon becomes important when dealing with area-preserving open systems because, in this case, it leads to a temporary trapping of orbits in certain regions of phase space. In this work, we propose that the different scenarios of dynamical trapping can be explained by analyzing the crossings between invariant manifolds. In order to corroborate this assertion, we use an adaptive refinement procedure to approximately obtain the sets of homoclinic and …
In this article, we study the classical chaotic scattering of a He atom off a harmonically vibrating Cu surface. The three degrees of freedom (3- dof) model is studied by first considering the non-vibrating 2-dof model for different values of the energy. We calculate the set of singularities of the scattering functions and study its connection with the tangle between the stable and unstable manifolds of the fixed point at an infinite distance to the Cu surface in the Poincaré map for different values of the initial energy. With these manifolds, it is possible to construct the stable and unstab…
We present and analyze mechanisms for the patterned deposition of particles in a spatio-temporally driven lattice. The working principle is based on the breaking of the spatio-temporal translation symmetry, which is responsible for the equivalence of all lattice sites, by applying modulated phase shifts to the lattice sites. The patterned trapping of the particles occurs in confined chaotic seas, created via the ramping of the height of the lattice potential. Complex density profiles on the length scale of the complete lattice can be obtained by a quasi-continuous, spatial deformation of the c…
We perform echo spectroscopy on ultra cold atoms in atom optics billiards, to study their quantum dynamics. The detuning of the trapping laser is used to change the ``perturbation'', which causes a decay in the echo coherence. Two different regimes are observed: First, a perturbative regime in which the decay of echo coherence is non-monotonic and partial revivals of coherence are observed. These revivals are more pronounced in traps with mixed dynamics as compared to traps where the dynamics is fully chaotic. Next, for stronger perturbations, the decay becomes monotonic and independent of the…
We study the quantum coherent-tunneling between two Bose-Einstein condensates separated through an oscillating trap potential. The cases of slowly and rapidly varying in time trap potential are considered. In the case of a slowly varying trap we study the nonlinear resonances and chaos in the oscillations of the relative atomic population. Using the Melnikov function approach, we find the conditions for chaotic macroscopic quantum-tunneling phenomena to exists. Criteria for the onset of chaos are also given. We find the values of frequency and modulation amplitude which lead to chaos on oscill…
Interpreting the oscillations of massive and intermediate mass stars remains a challenging task. In fast rotators, the oscillation spectrum of p-modes is a superposition of sub-spectra which correspond to different types of modes, among which island modes and chaotic modes are expected to be the most visible. In the case of island modes, a semi-analytic formula describing the asymptotic behavior of island modes has been obtained previously. We study the properties of high frequency chaotic p-modes in a polytropic model. Unexpected peaks appear in the frequency autocorrelations of the spectra. …
Single trajectories of magnetic line motion indicate the persistence of a central protected plasma core, surrounded by a chaotic shell enclosed in a double-sided transport barrier : the latter is identified as being composed of two Cantori located on two successive "most-noble" numbers values of the perturbed safety factor, and forming an internal transport barrier (ITB). Magnetic lines which succeed to escape across this barrier begin to wander in a wide chaotic sea extending up to a very robust barrier (as long as L<1) which is identified mathematically as a robust KAM surface at the plasma …
We propose a new dynamical model for capture of irregular moons which identifies chaos as the essential feature responsible for initial temporary gravitational trapping within a planet's Hill sphere. The key point is that incoming potential satellites get trapped in chaotic orbits close to "sticky" KAM tori in the neighbourhood of the planet, possibly for very long times, so that the chaotic layer largely dictates the final orbital properties of captured moons.
