New classes composite vacuum wormhole solutions of Jordan-Brans-Dicke gravitation is presented and analysed. It is shown that such solution holds for both, a bridge between separated Schwarzschild and Brans Universes and for a bridge connecting two Schwarzschild asymptotically flat regions joined by Brans throat. We have also noticed that there are some new possible candidates for wormhole spacetimes.
We present the static spherically symmetric vacuum solutions of the Jordan, Brans-Dicke field equations. The new solutions are obtained by considering a polar Gaussian, isothermal and radial hyperbolic metrics.
We study spherically symmetric solutions to the Jordan-Brans-Dicke field equations under the assumption that the space-time may possess an arbitrary number of spatial dimensions. Assuming a perfect fluid with the equation of state, we show that there are static interior nontrivial solutions in three dimensional Jordan-Brans-Dicke gravity theory.
In this short letter we present a some rigorous vacuum solutions of the D-dimensional Jordan-Brans-Dicke field equations. In contrast with the well known Brans-Dicke solutions, to the search of static and spherically symmetric space-time we choose the widespread Hilbert coordinates.
We have studied the properties of the static, spherically symmetric solution of Jordan, Brans-Dicke theory. An exact interior solution for standard space-time line element in the Schwarzschild form is obtained.
A simple Heckmann's vacuum wormhole solution of Jordan-Brans-Dicke gravitation is presented and analysed. It is shown that in contrast with class I Brans solution where the throat radius becomes real when $ω< -4/3$ here it becomes positive when $ω< -1$.
In this article, a study of the scalar field shells in relativistic spherically symmetric configurations has been performed. We construct the composite solution of Jordan-Brans-Dicke field equation by matching the conformal Brans solutions at each junction surfaces. This approach allows us to associate rigorously with all solutions as a single glued "space", which is a unique differentiable manifold M^4.
We discuss stability of spherically symmetric static solutions in Newtonian limit of Jordan, Brans-Dicke field equations. The behavior of the stable equilibrium solutions for the spherically symmetric configurations considered here, it emerges that the more compact a model is, the more stable it is. Moreover, linear stability analysis shows the existence of stable configurations for any polytropic index.
We consider the embedding of 3+1 dimensional cosmology in 4+1 dimensional Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory. We show that exponentially growing and power law scale factors are implied. Whereas the 4+1 dimensional scalar field is approximately constant for each, the effective 3+1 dimensional scalar field is constant for exponentially growing scale factor and time dependent for power law scale factor.
It is well known that, in contrast to general relativity, there are two conformally related frames, the Jordan frame and the Einstein frame, in which the Brans-Dicke theory, a prototype of generic scalar-tensor theory, can be formulated. There is a long standing debate on the physical equivalence of the formulations in these two different frames. It is shown here that gravitational deflection of light to second order accuracy may observationally distinguish the two versions of the Brans-Dicke theory.
Vacuum Brans-Dicke theory can be self-consistently described in two frames, the Jordan frame (JF) and the conformally rescaled Einstein frame (EF), the transformations providing an easy passage from one frame to the other at the level of actions and solutions. Despite this, the conformal frames are inequivalent describing different geometries. It is shown that the predictions of the weak field lensing (WFL) observables in the EF are different from those recently obtained in the JF for the vacuum Brans-Dicke class 1 solution. The value of the Brans-Dicke coupling parameter $ω$ from the Cassini …
We examine the possibility of static wormhole solutions in the vacuum Brans-Dicke theory both in the original (Jordan) frame and in the conformally rescaled (Einstein) frame. It turns out that, in the former frame, wormholes exist only in a very narrow interval of the coupling parameter, viz., -3/2<omega<-4/3. It is shown that these wormholes are not traversable in practice. In the latter frame, wormhole solutions do not exist at all unless energy conditions are violated by hand.
We obtain two dimensional analogue of the Jordan-Brans-Dicke (JBD) gravity action described in four dimensional spherically symmetric curved space time metric. There will be two scalar fields, namely, the Brans Dicke (BD) $ϕ$ and scale factor of 2-sphere part of the space time $ψ.$ We obtained suitable duality transformations between $(ψ,ϕ)$ and $(ρ,S)$ where $ρ$ and $S$ is respectively amplitude and phase part of the corresponding de Broglie pilot wave function $Ψ(ρ,S)=\sqrtρe^{iS}.$ Covariant conservation of mass-energy current density of particles ensemble $J_a=ρ\partial_aS,$ is established…
In the context of scalar-tensor theories we study the evolution of the density contrast for Jordan-Fierz-Brans-Dicke theories in a Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker Universe. Calculations are performed in the Einstein Frame with the cosmological background described as Lambda-Cold Dark Matter (Lambda-CDM) and supplemented by a Jordan-Fierz-Brans-Dicke field. By using a completely general procedure valid for all scalar-tensor theories, we obtain the exact fourth-order differential equation for the density contrast evolution in modes of arbitrary size. In the case of sub-Hubble modes, the expr…
We consider the evolution of primordial black holes in a generalyzed Jordan-Brans-Dicke cosmological model where both the Brans-Dicke scalar field and its coupling to gravity are dynamical functions determined from the evolution equations. The evaporation rate for the black holes changes compared to that in standard cosmology. We show that accretion of radiation can proceed effectively in the radiation dominated era. The black hole lifetime shortens for low initial mass, but increases for high initial mass, and is thus considerably modified compared to the case of standard cosmology. We derive…
Analyzing the static spherically symmetric and rotating ellipsoid solutions in the Newtonian limit of Jordan, Brance - Dicke theory we find the following. In empty space scalar-tensor theories have trivial solution of field equation with constant scalar potential (efficient value of gravitation constant). In this case no celestial-mechanical experiments to reveal a difference between scalar-tensor theories and Einstein theory is not presented possible. However, scalar field, inside the matter, has characteristics like gravitation permeability of material similar electromagnetic permeability of…
In this work, we present a complete analysis of the quantisation of the classical Brans-Dicke Theory using the method of affine quantisation in the Hamiltonian description of the theory. The affine quantisation method is based on the symmetry of the phase-space of the system, in this case the (positive) half-plane, that is identified with the affine group. We consider a FLRW-type spacetime, and since the scale factor is always positive, the affine method seems to be more suited than the canonincal quantisation for our Quantum Cosmology. We find the wave function of the Brans-Dicke universe, an…
A classification of Brans-Dicke theories of gravitation, based on the behaviour of the dimensionless gravitational coupling constant, is given. It is noted that the discussion takes place in the current literature, about which of the two distinguished conformal frames in which scalar-tensor theories of gravity can be formulated: the Jordan frame and the Einstein frame, is the physical one, may, in most cases, be meaningless for both frames may belong to the same conformal class. It is also noted that the Jordan frame formulation of Brans-Dicke gravity with ordinary matter nonminimally coupled,…
The static spheroidal solutions of Jordan-Brands-Dicke theory (JBD) are studied. We consider the effect of the anisotropic stresses of scalar field on the shape of JBD self-graviting objects. It is shown that scalar fields can have significant effect on the structure and properties of self-graviting objects. In contrast with general relativity in JBD theory there are nonflat static spheroidal solutions.
Approximate vacuum solutions of Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory for perturbed scalar field and perturbed Robertson-Walker metric, are found. Solutions for the scale factor and the scalar field in unperturbed JBD theory are dependent on the $ω$ parameter which determines how the scalar field is coupled to geometry of space-time. After adding a metric perturbation to Robertson-Walker metric and a perturbation to the scalar field, we solved the linearized JBD equations and found the scale factor and the scalar field as $a\propto t$ and $ϕ\propto t^{-2}$ with $ω=$-3/2. The results are necessary conditio…
Jordan-Brans-Dicke cosmology with a standard kinetic term for the scalar field and no mass term has the same radiation dominated solution as standard Einstein cosmology without the cosmological constant. Because of this, the primordial nucleosynthesis (Big - Bang nucleosynthesis) result obtained for standard cosmology remains the same for Jordan-Brans-Dicke cosmology. We show that Jordan-Brans-Dicke cosmology with a mass term for the scalar field as well as explaining dark energy for the present era, can also explain radiation dominated cosmology for the primordial nucleosynthesis era.
We study the transition from radiation domination to matter domination in Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory, in particular examining how the Hubble length at equality depends on the coupling parameter $ω$. We consider the prospects for using high-accuracy microwave anisotropy and large-scale structure data to constrain $ω$ more strongly than by conventional solar system gravity experiments.
When Brans-Dicke Theory is formulated in terms of the Jordan scalar field ϕ, dark energy is related to the mass of this field. We show that if ϕis taken to be a complex scalar field then an exact solution of the vacuum equations shows that Friedmann equation possesses a term, proportional to the inverse sixth power of the scale factor, as well as a constant term. Possible interpretations and phenomenological implications of this result are discussed.
We consider the quantum gravity and cosmology of a Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory, predicted by string effective actions. We study its canonical formalism and find that the constraint algebra is that of general relativity, as a consequence of the general covariance of scalar-tensor theories. We also analyze the problem of boundary conditions and propose that they must be imposed in the Jordan frame, in which particles satisfy the strong equivalence principle. Specifically, we discuss both Hartle-Hawking and wormhole boundary conditions in the context of quantum cosmology. We find quantum wormhole s…
We present an intermediate inflationary stage in a Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory. In this scenario we analyze the quantum fluctuations corresponding to adiabatic and isocurvature modes. The model is compared to that described by using the intermediate model in Einstein General Relativity theory. We assess the status of this model in light of the WMAP7 data.
Jordan and Einstein frame are studied under the light of Hamiltonian formalism. Dirac's constraint theory for Hamiltonian systems is applied to Brans-Dicke theory in the Jordan Frame. In both Jordan and Einstein frame, Brans-Dicke theory has four secondary first class constraints and their constraint algebra is closed. We show, contrary to what is generally believed, the Weyl (conformal) transformation, between the two frames, is not a canonical transformation, in the sense of Hamiltonian formalism. This addresses quantum mechanical inequivalence as well. A canonical transformation is shown.
We use cosmic microwave background data from WMAP, ACBAR, VSA and CBI, and galaxy power spectrum data from 2dF, to constrain flat cosmologies based on the Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory, using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach. Using a parametrization based on ξ=1/4ω, and performing an exploration in the range \lnξ\in [-9,3], we obtain a 95% marginalized probability bound of \lnξ< -6.2, corresponding to a 95% marginalized probability lower bound on the Brans-Dicke parameter ω>120.
In this paper we study emergent universe model in the context of a self interacting Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory. The model presents a stable past eternal static solution which eventually enters a phase where the stability of this solution is broken leading to an inflationary period. We also establish constraints for the different parameters appearing in our model.
We discuss the physical equivalence between the Einstein and Jordan frames in Brans-Dicke theory. The inequivalence of conformal transformed theories is clarified with the help of an old equivalence theorem of Chrisholm's.
In this paper we analyze the signal emitted by a compact binary system in the Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory. We compute the scalar and tensor components of the power radiated by the source and study the scalar waveform. Eventually we consider the detectability of the scalar component of the radiation by interferometers and resonant-mass detectors.
It is well known that the Jordan and Einstein frames are equivalent to each other in classical Brans-Dicke theory, provided that one and the same metric is employed for the physical space-time. Nevertheless, it is shown in this paper by cosmological models that the loop quantisation in the two different frames will lead to inequivalent effective theories. Analytical solutions have been found in both frames for the effective loop quantum Brans-Dicke cosmology without potential in: (i) vacuum case, (ii) additional massless scalar field case. In Einstein frame the analytical solution for the Bran…
We investigate a field theoretical approach to the Jordan-Brans- Dicke (JBD) theory extended with a particular potential term on a cosmological background by starting with the motivation that the Higgs field and the scale factor of the universe are related. Based on this relation, it is possible to come up with mathematically equivalent but two different interpretations. From one point of view while the universe is static, the masses of the elementary particles change with time. The other one, which we stick with throughout the manuscript, is that while the universe is expanding, particle mass…
The Hamiltonian of any quantum cosmological model must obey some conditions in order to be self-adjoint, or to admit self-adjoint extensions. We will consider in this paper the self-adjoint character of the Hamiltonian resulting from the Brans-Dicke theory, both in Einstein and Jordan frames. In both cases we find the wave-function solutions in order to obtain concrete predictions for the evolution of the Universe. We show that the specific cosmological scenarios obtained depend very weakly on the conditions of having a self-adjoint operator. The problem of equivalence between Einstein and Jor…
The Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory of gravitation, which promotes the gravitational constant to a dynamical scalar field, predicts a value for the Eddington-Robertson post-Newtonian parameter gamma that is significantly different from the general relativistic value of unity. This contradicts precision solar system measurements that tightly constrain gamma around 1. We consider a modification of the theory, in which the scalar field is sourced explicitly by matter. We find that this leads to a modified expression for the gamma-parameter. In particular, a specific choice of the scalar current yields …
Any quantum theory of gravity which treats the gravitational constant as a dynamical variable has to address the issue of superpositions of states corresponding to different eigenvalues. We show how the unobservability of such superpositions can be explained through the interaction with other gravitational degrees of freedom (decoherence). The formal framework is canonically quantized Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory. We discuss the concepts of intrinsic time and semiclassical time as well as the possibility of tunneling into regions corresponding to a negative gravitational constant. We calculate th…
In this work we study an alternative scheme for an Emergent Universe scenario in the context of a Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory, where the universe is initially in a truly static state supported by a scalar field located in a false vacuum. The model presents a classically stable past eternal static state which is broken when, by quantum tunneling, the scalar field decays into a state of true vacuum and the universe begins to evolve following the extended open inflationary scheme.
We interpret the Brans-Dicke gravity from entropic viewpoint. We first apply the Verlinde's entropic formalism in the Einstein frame, then perform the conformal transformation which connects the Einstein frame to the Jordan frame. The transformed result yields the equation of motion of the Brans-Dicke theory in the Jordan frame.
The effective dynamics of scalar-tensor theory (STT) in the Jordan frame is studied in the context of loop quantum cosmology with holonomy corrections. After deriving the effective Hamiltonian from the connection dynamics formulation, we obtain the holonomy-corrected evolution equations of STT on spatially flat Friedmann-Robterson-Walker background, which exhibit some interesting features unique to the Jordan frame of STT. In particular, the linear term of the cosine function appearing in the equations could lead to dynamics much different from the classical theory in the low-energy limit. In …
With an explicit example, we show that Jordan frame and the conformally transformed Einstein frames clearly lead to different physics for a non-minimally coupled theory of gravity, namely Brans-Dicke theory, at least at the quantum level. The example taken up is the spatially flat Friedmann cosmology in Brans-Dicke theory.
We apply the holographic principle to the Brans-Dicke cosmology. We analyze the holographic bound in both the Jordan and Einstein frames. The holographic bound is satisfied for both the k=0 and k=-1 universe, but it is violated for the k=1 matter dominated universe.
In this work we study the stability of the Jordan-Brans-Dicke (JBD) static universe. This is motivated by the possibility that the universe might have started out in an asymptotically JBD static state, in the context of the so called emergent universe scenario. We extent our previous results on stability of JBD static universe by considering spatially homogeneous Bianchi type IX anisotropic perturbation modes and by including more general perfect fluids. Contrary to general relativity, we have found that the JBD static universe, dominated by a standard perfect fluid, could be stable against is…
We make a detailed study of boson star configurations in Jordan--Brans--Dicke theory, studying both equilibrium properties and stability, and considering boson stars existing at different cosmic epochs. We show that boson stars can be stable at any time of cosmic history and that equilibrium stars are denser in the past. We analyze three different proposed mass functions for boson star systems, and obtain results independently of the definition adopted. We study how the configurations depend on the value of the Jordan--Brans--Dicke coupling constant, and the properties of the stars under extre…
The definition of the Sparling-Thirring form is extended to the Brans-Dicke theory. By writing the Brans-Dicke field equations in a formally Maxwell-like form, a superpotential and a corresponding pseudo energy-momentum form are defined. The general energy expression provided by the superpotential in the Jordan frame is discussed in relation to the corresponding expression in the Einstein frame. In order to substantiate its formal definition, the generalized Sparling-Thirring form is used to calculate the energy for the spherically symmetric vacuum solution in the Brans-Dicke theory.
We consider a Brans-Dicke cosmology in five-dimensional space-time. Neglecting the quadratic and the mixed Brans-Dicke terms in the Einstein equation, we derive a modified wave equation of the Brans-Dicke field. We show that, at high energy limit, the 3-brane Brans-Dicke cosmology could be described as the standard one by changing the equation of state. Finally as an illustration of the purpose, we show that the dark energy component of the universe agrees with the observations data.
We present the new interpretation of scalar field for the Brans-Dicke theory. This interpretation is obtained by considering a fixed spacetime structure of manifold.
We study the Generalized Brans-Dicke cosmology in the presence of matter and dark energy. Of particular interest for a constant Brans-Dicke parameter, the de Sitter space has also been investigated.
In this paper we investigate the chameleon effect in the different conformal frames of the Brans--Dicke theory. Given that, in the standard literature on the subject, the chameleon is described in the Einstein frame almost exclusively, here we pay special attention to the description of this effect in the Jordan and in the string frames. It is shown that, in general, terrestrial and solar system bounds on the mass of the BD scalar field, and bounds of cosmological origin, are difficult to reconcile at once through a single chameleon potential. We point out that, in a cosmological context, prov…
We consider Brans-Dicke theory with a self-interacting potential in Einstein conformal frame. We show that an accelerating expansion is possible in a spatially flat universe for large values of the Brans-Dicke parameter consistent with local gravity experiments.
We studied the Einstein-Brans-Dicke cosmology in detail. The difference of the evolution of the universe is significant between Einstein-Brans-Dicke cosmology and standard big-bang model during the radiation-dominated era. The power-law evolution of the scale factor is fast enough to solve the cosmological puzzles and slow enough to avoid the graceful exit problem. However, the constraints from the satisfactory bubble distribution (beta^2>0.25) and the solar system observations (beta^2<0.002) are mutually exclusive. This suggests that this kind of inflationary model is ruled out. We also clari…
It is shown that the recently claimed two new Brans-Dicke wormhole solutions [F. He and S-W. Kim, Phys. Rev. D{\bf 65}, 084022 (2002)] are not really new solutions. They are just the well known Brans-Dicke solutions of Class I and II in a different conformal gauge.
A simple Lorentzian vacuum wormhole solution of Brans-Dicke gravitation is presented and analysed. It is shown that such solution holds for both, the Brans-Dicke theory endowed with torsion (for a value of the coupling parameter $ω> 1/2$) and for the vacuum -no torsion- case (for $ω< -2$).
We present static cylindrically symmetric electrovac solutions in the framework of the Brans-Dicke theory and show that our solution yields some of the well-known solutions for special values of the parameters of the resulting metric functions.
The field equations of the scalar-tensor theories of gravitation are presented in different representations, related to each other by conformal transformations of the metric. One of the representations resembles the Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory, and is the starting point for the generation of exact electrostatic and magnetostatic exterior solutions. The corresponding solutions for each specific theory can be obtained by transforming back to the original canonical representation, and the conversions are given for the theories of Jordan-Brans-Dicke, Barker, Schwinger, and conformally invariant coup…
A two-way traversable wormhole solution in Brans-Dicke theory with torsion is obtained using the method of massive thin shells. The solution goes over general relativity for an infinite large value of the coupling parameter, however, the Brans-Dicke scalar could never be the ``carrier'' of exoticity that threads the wormhole throat.
We discuss the correspondence between metric $f(R)$ gravity and $ω=0$ Brans-Dicke theory with a potential, by working out an example that reconfirms this equivalence.
Spherically symmetric thin-shell wormholes are constructed within the framework of Brans-Dicke gravity. It is shown that, for appropriate values of the Brans-Dicke constant, these wormholes can be supported by matter satisfying the energy conditions.
The $ω\to\infty$ limit of Brans-Dicke theory is studied with the help of the conformal transformation approach without resorting, however, to the conformal invariance property of this formalism, that is shown to be spurious.
This paper is devoted to study the accelerated expansion of the universe by exploring the Brans-Dicke parameter in different eras. For this purpose, we take FRW universe model with viscous fluid (without potential) and Bianchi type I universe model with barotropic fluid (with and without potential). We evaluate deceleration parameter as well as Brans-Dicke parameter to explore cosmic acceleration. It is concluded that accelerated expansion of the universe can also be achieved for higher values of the Brans-Dicke parameter in some cases.
