We investigated temperature and magnetic field dependent radio-frequency electromagnetic absorption in La0.67Ba0.33MnO3 by monitoring changes in resonance frequency (fr) and current (II) through a LC resonant circuit powered by an integrated chip oscillator. The ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition at Tc in zero external magnetic field is accompanied by an abrupt increase in fr and I and they are tunable by small external magnetic field. We observed fractional changes as much as 46% in delfr/fr and 23% in delI/I around Tc under H = 0.1 T that can be exploited for low magnetic field sensors and other applications.
The magnetic characteristics of polycrystalline exchange-biased antiferromagnet/ferromagnet-bilayers are determined by a complex interplay of parameters, describing structural and magnetic properties of the material system, including in particular the grain volume distribution of the antiferromagnet. An ideal characterization of such systems would be a non-destructive determination of the relevant parameters for each individual grain. This is in most cases not feasible, since typical characterization methods do average over larger areas. Here, we show that it is however possible to determine a…
Hybrid magnonic systems host a variety of characteristic quantum phenomena such as the magnetically-induced transparency (MIT) and Purcell effect, which are considered useful for future coherent quantum information processing. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a tunable MIT effect in the Y3Fe5O12(YIG)/Permalloy(Py) magnon-magnon coupled system via changing the magnetic field orientations. By probing the magneto-optic effects of Py and YIG, we identify clear features of MIT spectra induced by the mode hybridization between the uniform mode of Py and the perpendicular standing spin-wav…
The first observation of tungsten disulfide liquid crystalline nanocomposites in dispersions of liquid phase-exfoliated flakes is demonstrated in a range of organic solvents. The nanocomposites demonstrate significant birefringence and reconfigurable optical chirality as observed in the linear and circular dichroism measurements respectively. Under an applied magnetic field of +/-1.5T the chirality can be switched ON/OFF, while the wavelength range for switching can be tuned from large to narrow range by the proper selection of the host solvent. In combination with photoluminescence capabiliti…
External magnetic fields provide a macroscopic control mechanism to influence the microstructure of polycrystalline materials. We model the influence of strong magnetic fields on grain growth in thin films with a magnetic extended phase field crystal (XPFC) model. The magneto-structural effects are incorporated into the correlation function in reciprocal space. With this approach magnetic anisotropy, magnetostriction and mobility of grain boundary can be controlled and a variety of geometrical and topological properties consistent with experimental results can be determined.
We create a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) at the interface between EuO, a ferromagnetic insulator, and SrTiO3, a transparent non-magnetic insulator considered the bedrock of oxide-based electronics. This is achieved by a controlled in-situ redox reaction between pure metallic Eu deposited at room temperature on the surface of SrTiO3, an innovative bottom-up approach that can be easily generalized to other functional oxides and scaled to applications. Additionally, we find that the resulting EuO capping layer can be tuned from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic, depending on the layer thick…
Hybridization of semiconducting and magnetic materials into a single heterostructure is believed to be potentially applicable to the design of novel functional spintronic devices. In the present work we report epitaxial stabilization of four magnetically ordered iron oxide phases (Fe3O4, γ-Fe2O3, α-Fe2O3 and most exotic metastable ε-Fe2O3) in the form of nanometer sized single crystalline films on GaN(0001) surface. The epitaxial growth of as many as four distinctly different iron oxide phases is demonstrated within the same single-target Laser MBE technological process on a GaN semiconductor …
Shubnikov-de Hass oscillations are directly observed in undoped antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4. With increasing magnetic fields, the oscillation period decreases gradually in the magnetic transition from canted antiferromagnetism to ferromagnetism and then saturates in high magnetic fields, indicating the field-induced evolution of the band structure. From the analysis of the high-field oscillations, a nontrivial Berry phase and a small effective mass are extracted, in agreement with the predicted Weyl semimetal phase in ferromagnetic MnBi2Te4. Furthermore, rotating the magne…
Quantum spin-liquid van der Waals magnets such as TaS$_2$, TaSe$_2$, and RuCl$_3$ provide a natural platform to explore new exotic phenomena associated with spinon physics, whose properties can be controlled by exchange proximity with ferromagnetic insulators such as CrBr$_3$. Here we put forward a twisted van der Waals heterostructure based on a quantum spin-liquid bilayer encapsulated between ferromagnetic insulators. We demonstrate the emergence of spinon flat bands and topological spinon states in such heterostructure, where the emergence of a topological gap is driven by the twist. We fur…
We successfully dope the magnetically silent double perovskite semiconductor Sr2GaSbO6 to induce ferromagnetism and tune its band gap, with Ga3+ partially substituted by the magnetic trivalent cation Mn3+, in a rigid cation ordering with Sb5+. Our new ferromagnetic semiconducting Sr2Ga1-xMnxSbO6 double perovskite, which crystallizes in tetragonal symmetry (space group I4/m) and has tunable ferromagnetic ordering temperature and band gap, suggests that magnetic ion doping of double perovskites is a productive avenue towards obtaining materials for application in next-generation oxide-based spin…
Recent classification efforts encompassing crystalline symmetries have revealed rich possibilities for solid-state systems to support a tapestry of exotic topological states. However, finding materials that realize such states remains a daunting challenge. Here we show how the interplay of topology, symmetry, and magnetism combined with doping and external electric and magnetic field controls can be used to drive the previously unreported SrIn$_2$As$_2$ materials family into a variety of topological phases. Our first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis reveal that SrIn$_2$As$_2$ is a…
We report the occurrence of the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) in polycrystalline perovskite La0.5Ca0.5CoO3. The sample is ferromagnetic below TC = 147 K and resistivity shows non-metallic behavior above and below the TC with only a small negative magnetoresistance (~2%) around TC. Field dependence of magnetization at 10 K shows large hysteresis with a coercive field of 6 kOe but a small magnetization ~ 0.64 Bohr magneton/Co even in a field of 50 kOe, which indicates the presence of magnetically heterogeneous ground state consisting of ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic phases. The field depen…

The magnetic state of 1212-type ruthenocuprate in magnetocaloric and magnetoresistivity measurements of polycrystalline samples of RuSr2Gd1-xCexCu2O8 and Ru1-xSr2GdCu2O8
External magnetic fields influence the microstructure of polycrystalline materials. We explore the influence of strong external magnetic fields on the long time scaling of grain size during coarsening in thin films with an extended phase-field-crystal model. Additionally, the change of various geometrical and topological properties is studied. In a situation which leads to stagnation, an applied external magnetic field can induce further grain growth. The induced driving force due to the magnetic anisotropy defines the magnetic influence of the external magnetic field. Different scaling regime…
The ternary nitride CaZn2N2, composed only of earth-abundant elements, is a novel semiconductor with a band gap of 1.8 eV. First-principles calculations predict that continuous Mg substitution at the Zn site will change the optical band gap in a wide range from ~3.3 eV to ~1.9 eV for Ca(Mg1-xZnx)2N2 (x = 0-1). In this study, we demonstrate that a solid-state reaction at ambient pressure and a high-pressure synthesis at 5 GPa produce x = 0 and 0.12, and x = 0.12-1 polycrystalline samples, respectively. It is experimentally confirmed that the optical band gap can be continuously tuned from ~3.2 …
Weyl semimetals (WSM) have been extensively studied due to their exotic properties such as topological surface states and anomalous transport phenomena. Their band structure topology is usually predetermined by material parameters and can hardly be manipulated once the material is formed. Their unique transport properties appear usually at very low temperature, which sets challenges for practical device applications. In this work, we demonstrate a way to modify the band topology via a weak magnetic field in a ferromagnetic topological semimetal, Co2MnAl, at room temperature. We observe a tunab…
Tunable exchange bias effect in magnetic Bi$_{0.9}$Gd$_{0.1}$Fe$_{0.9}$Ti$_{0.1}$O$_3$ nanoparticles at temperatures up to 250 K
We present spin transport studies on a low-field, room-temperature magnetoelectric multiferroic polycrystalline $\text{Sr}_{3}\text{Co}_{2}\text{Fe}_{24}\text{O}_{41}$ (SCFO)|Pt heterostructure wherein a highly tunable transverse conical magnetic phase is responsible for static and dynamic magnetoelectric coupling. We measured angular dependence of spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) at constant magnetic fields ($H$) in the range of 50 to 100 kOe. Application of field below the critical value (2.5 kOe), yielded negative SMR and the $H$-evolution of normalized SMR exhibited a negative gradient. F…
We report on the synthesis and superconductivity of high-entropy-alloy-type (HEA-type) compounds TrZr2 (Tr = Fe, Co, Ni, Rh, Ir), in which the Tr site satisfies the criterion of HEA. Polycrystalline samples of HEA-type TrZr2 with four different compositions at the Tr site were synthesized by arc melting method. The phase purity and crystal structure were examined by Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction profile. It has been confirmed that the obtained samples have a CuAl2-type tetragonal structure. From analyses of elemental composition and mixing entropy at the Tr site, the HEA state for t…

The Berry curvature in magnetic systems is attracting interest due to the potential tunability of topological features via the magnetic structure. $f$-electrons, with their large spin-orbit coupling, abundance of non-collinear magnetic structures and high electronic tunability, are attractive candidates to search for tunable topological properties. In this study, we measure anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the distorted kagom$\acute{e}$ heavy fermion antiferromagnet U$_3$Ru$_4$Al$_{12}$. A large intrinsic AHE in high fields reveals the presence of a large Berry curvature. Moreover, the fields re…

The compound Ni2Mn0.75Cu0.25Ga0.84Al0.16 presents a large magnetocaloric effect among magnetically aligned structures and its causes are explored. In addition, Ni2Mn0.70Cu0.30Ga0.84Al0.16 shows very high, although irreversible, entropy and adiabatic temperature change at room temperature und…
We theoretically demonstrate that class-I topological Dirac semimetals (TDSMs) can provide a platform for realizing both electrically and magnetically tunable spin-charge conversion. With time-reversal symmetry, the spin component along the uniaxial rotation axis ($z$-axis) is approximately conserved, which leads to an anisotropic spin Hall effect -- the resulting spin Hall current relies on the relative orientation between the external electric field and the $z$-axis. The application of a magnetic field, on the other hand, breaks time-reversal symmetry, driving the TDSM into a Weyl semimetal …
The inherent existence of multi phases in iron oxide nanostructures highlights the significance of them being investigated deliberately to understand and possibly control the phases. Here, the effects of annealing at 250 0C with a variable duration on the bulk magnetic and structural properties of high aspect ratio bi-phase iron oxide nanorods with ferrimagnetic Fe3O4 and antiferromagnetic alpha-Fe2O3 is explored. Increasing annealing time under a free flow of oxygen enhanced the alpha-Fe2O3 volume fraction, and improved the crystallinity of the Fe3O4 phase, identified in changes in the magnet…
We report the low-temperature properties of SrNd$_2$O$_4$, a geometrically frustrated magnet. Magnetisation and heat capacity measurements performed on polycrystalline samples indicate the appearance of a magnetically ordered state at $T_{\rm N}=2.28(4)$~K. Powder neutron diffraction measurements reveal that an \afm\ state with the propagation vector \QV\ is stabilised below this temperature. The magnetic order is incomplete, as only one of the two Nd$^{3+}$ sites carries a significant magnetic moment while the other site remains largely disordered. The presence of a disordered magnetic compon…
To achieve room-temperature superconductivity, a mechanism is needed that provides heavy quasiparticles at room temperature. In heavy fermion systems such localization is prototypically present only at liquid helium temperatures. In these $f$-electron Kondo systems, conduction electrons magnetically couple to localized moments, enhancing their mass and scatting time. These quasiparticles may form Cooper pairs and cause unconventional superconductivity with a critical temperature $T_c$ of the order of the Fermi energy $\varepsilon_F$. In relative terms, this $T_c$ is much larger than in cuprate…
