We present a method for calculating scattering phase shifts which utilizes continuum-discretized states obtained in a bound-state type calculation. The wrong asymptotic behavior of the discretized state is remedied by means of the Green's function formalism. Test examples confirm the accuracy of the method. The $α+n$ scattering is described using realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials. The $3/2^-$ and $1/2^-$ phase shifts obtained in a single-channel calculation are too small in comparison with experiment. The $1/2^+$ phase shifts are in reasonable agreement with experiment, and gain contributions both from the tensor and central components of the nucleon-nucleon potential.
We investigate theoretically $Λ$ production spectra of $^3$He($π$, $K$) reactions at $p_π=$ 1.05--1.20 GeV/$c$ in the distorted-wave impulse approximation, using the continuum-discretized coupled-channel method. The production cross section of a $^3_Λ$H(1/2$^+$) ground state is also discussed.
We re-examine the deuteron elastic breakup cross sections on 12C and 10Be at low incident energies, for which a serious discrepancy between the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method (CDCC) and the Faddeev-Alt-Grassberger-Sandhas theory (FAGS) was pointed out. We show the closed-channels neglected in the preceding study affect significantly the breakup cross section calculated with CDCC, resulting in good agreement with the result of FAGS.
Relativistic effects in the breakup of weakly-bound nuclei at intermediate energies are studied by means of the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method with eikonal approximation. Nuclear coupling potentials with Lorentz contraction are newly included and those effects on breakup cross sections are investigated. We show that relativistic corrections lead to larger breakup cross sections. Coupled-channel effects on the breakup cross sections are also discussed.
We present a practical way of smoothing discrete breakup S-matrix elements calculated by the continuum-discretized coupled-channel method (CDCC). This method makes the smoothing procedure much easier. The reliability of the smoothing method is confirmed for the three-body breakup reactions, 58Ni(d,pn) at 80 MeV and 12C(6He,4He2n) at 229.8 MeV.
We investigate the elastic scattering of $^9$Be on $^{208}$Pb at beam energies above (50 MeV) and below (40 MeV) the Coulomb barrier. The reaction is described within a four-body framework using the Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels (CDCC) method. The $^9$Be projectile states are generated using the analytical Transformed Harmonic Oscillator (THO) basis in hyperspherical coordinates. Our calculations confirm the importance of continuum effects at low energies.
This is a review on recent developments of the continuum discretized coupled-channels method (CDCC) and its applications to nuclear physics, cosmology and astrophysics, and nuclear engineering. The theoretical foundation of CDCC is shown, and a microscopic reaction theory for nucleus-nucleus scattering is constructed as an underlying theory of CDCC. CDCC is then extended to treat Coulomb breakup and four-body breakup. We also propose a new theory that makes CDCC applicable to inclusive reactions
The development of a continuum-bins scheme of discretization for three-body projectiles is necessary for studies of reactions of Borromean nuclei such as 6He within the continuum-discretized coupled-channels approach. Such a procedure, for constructing bin states on selected continuum energy intervals, is formulated and applied for the first time to reactions of a three-body projectile. The continuum representation uses the eigenchannel expansion of the three-body S-matrix. The method is applied to the challenging case of the 6He + 208Pb reaction at 22 MeV, where an accurate treatment of both …
A new method of pseudo-state discretization is proposed for the method of continuum discretized coupled channels (CDCC) to deal with three-body breakup processes. We propose real- and complex-range Gaussian bases for the pseudo-state wave functions, and show that they form in good approximation a complete set in the configuration space which is important for breakup processes. Continuous S-matrix elements are derived with the approximate completeness from discrete ones calculated by CDCC. Accuracy of the method is tested quantitatively for two realistic examples, d+$^{58}$Ni scattering at 80 M…
We propose a fully quantum-mechanical method of treating four-body nuclear breakup processes in scattering of a projectile consisting of three constituents, by extending the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method. The three-body continuum states of the projectile are discretized by diagonalizing the internal Hamiltonian of the projectile with the Gaussian basis functions. For $^6$He+$^{12}$C scattering at 18 and 229.8 MeV, the validity of the method is tested by convergence of the elastic and breakup cross sections with respect to increasing the number of the basis functions. Effects of…
We present a method for smoothing discrete breakup $S$-matrix elements calculated by the method of continuum-discretized coupled-channels (CDCC). This smoothing method makes it possible to apply CDCC to four-body breakup reactions. The reliability of the smoothing method is confirmed for two cases, $^{58}$Ni($d$, $p n$) at 80 MeV and the $E1$ transition of $^6$He. We apply CDCC with the smoothing method to $^6$He breakup reaction at 22.5 MeV. Multi-step breakup processes are found to be important.
The scattering of a weakly bound three-body system by a target is discussed. A transformed harmonic oscillator basis is used to provide an appropriate discrete and finite basis for treating the continuum part of the spectrum of the projectile. The continuum-discretized coupled channels framework is used for the scattering calculations. The formalism is applied to different reactions, 6He+12C at 229.8 MeV, 6He+64Zn at 10 and 13.6 MeV, and 6He+208Pb at 22 MeV, induced by the Borromean nucleus 6He. Both the Coulomb and nuclear interactions with a target are taken into account.
The scattering of $^9$Be on $^{208}$Pb is addressed within a four-body Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels (CDCC) framework, considering a three-body $α+ α+ n$ projectile plus a structureless target. The projectile states are generated using the analytical Transformed Harmonic Oscillator (THO) basis in hyperspherical coordinates. Both the elastic and breakup channels are described on the same footing. We find a good agreement between our calculations and the experimental data at beam energies around and below the Coulomb barrier.
The Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) formalism is extended by including the single-particle continuum in order to analyse the evolution of pairing in an isotopic chain from stability up to the drip line. We propose a continuum discretized generalized BCS based on single-particle pseudostates (PS). These PS are generated from the diagonalization of the single-particle Hamiltonian within a Transformed Harmonic Oscillator (THO) basis. The consistency of the results versus the size of the basis is studied. The method is applied to neutron rich Oxygen and Carbon isotopes and compared with similar pr…
Development of the method of CDCC (Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels) from the level of three-body CDCC to that of four-body CDCC is reviewed. Introduction of the pseudo-state method based on the Gaussian expansion method for discretizing the continuum states of two-body and three-body projectiles plays an essential role in the development. Furthermore, introduction of the complex-range Gaussian basis functions is important to improve the CDCC for nuclear breakup so as to accomplish that for Coulomb and nuclear breakup. A successful application of the four-body CDCC to $^6$He+$^{12}$C sca…
The effect of core excitation in the elastic scattering and breakup of a two-body halo nucleus on a stable target nucleus is studied. The structure of the weakly-bound projectile is described in the weak-coupling limit, assuming a particle-rotor model. The eigenfunctions and the associated eigenvalues are obtained by diagonalizing this Hamiltonian in a square-integrable basis (pseudo-states). For the radial coordinate between the particle and the core, a transformed harmonic oscillator (THO) basis is used. For the reaction dynamics, an extension of the Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels (C…
The continuum discretized coupled channels (CDCC) method is compared to the exact solution of the three-body Faddeev equations in momentum space. We present results for: i) elastic and breakup observables of d-12C at E_d=56 MeV, ii) elastic scattering of d-58Ni at E_d=80 MeV, and iii) elastic, breakup and transfer observables for 11Be+p at E_{11Be}/A=38.4 MeV. Our comparative studies show that, in the first two cases, the CDCC method is a good approximation to the full three-body Faddeev solution, but for the 11Be exotic nucleus, depending on the observable or the kinematic regime, it may miss…
We propose a new method for evaluating incomplete and complete fusion cross sections separately using the Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels method. This method is applied to analysis of the deuteron induced reaction on a 7Li target up to 50 MeV of the deuteron incident energy. Effects of deuteron breakup on this reaction are explicitly taken into account. Results of the method are compared with those of the Glauber model, and the difference between the two is discussed. It is found that the energy dependence of the incomplete fusion cross sections obtained by the present calculation is al…
We apply the Lagrange-mesh method to discretize continuum states of weakly bound nuclei for continuum-discretized coupled-channel (CDCC) calculations of three-body breakup reactions. This discretization method is compared with the bin method, which is regarded as the standard continuum discretization method, for the $d$ and $^6$Li induced reactions. An improved Numerov algorithm is used to solve the coupled channels equations, which permits a fast integration of equations and a convenient treatment of the closed channels. A new CDCC model code named \emph{CDCC-R} is developed. In all cases, th…
The Perey-effect in two-body channels of $(d,p)$ reactions has been known for a long time. It arises when the nonlocal two-body deuteron-target and/or proton-target problem is approximated by a local one, manifesting itself in a reduction of the scattering channel wave functions in the nuclear interior. However, the $(d,p)$ reaction mechanism requires explicit accounting for three-body dynamics involving the target and the neutron and proton in the deuteron. Treating nonlocality of the nucleon-target interactions within a three-body context requires significant effort and demands going beyond …
A novel method to extract the $B(E1)$ strength of a weakly bound nucleus from experimental Coulomb dissociation data is proposed. The method makes use of continuum discretized coupled channels (CDCC) calculations, in which both nuclear and Coulomb forces are taken into account to all orders. This is a crucial advantage with respect to the standard procedure based on the Equivalent Photon Method (EPM) which does not properly take into account nuclear distortion, higher order coupling effects, or Coulomb-nuclear interference terms. The procedure is applied to the $^{11}$Be nucleus using two sets…
A novel approach is developed to find the three-body breakup amplitudes and cross sections within the modified Faddeev equation framework. The method is based on the lattice-like discretization of the three-body continuum with a three-body stationary wave-packet basis in momentum space. The approach makes it possible to simplify drastically all the three- and few-body breakup calculations due to discrete wave-packet representations for the few-body continuum and simultaneous lattice representation for all the scattering operators entering the integral equation kernels. As a result, the few-bod…
The astrophysical factor for 7Be(p,γ)8B at zero energy, S17(0), is determined from an analysis of 208Pb(8B, p+7Be)208Pb at 52 MeV/nucleon by means of the method of continuum-discretized coupled-channels (CDCC) taking account of all nuclear and Coulomb breakup processes. The asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) method is used to extract S17(0) from the calculated breakup-cross-section. The main result of the present paper is S17(0)=20.9 +2.0/-1.9 eV b. The error consists of 8.4% experimental systematic error and the error due to the ambiguity in the s-wave p-7Be scattering length. This va…
In this work we investigate the connection between discretized three-body continuum wave functions, in particular via a box boundary condition, and the wave functions computed with the correct asymptotics. The three-body wave functions are in both cases obtained by means of the adiabatic expansion method. The information concerning all the possible incoming and outgoing channels, which appears naturally when the continuum is not discretized, seems to be lost when the discretization is implemented. In this work we show that both methods are fully equivalent, and the full information contained i…
The Continuum Discretized Coupled Channels (CDCC) method is a well established theory for direct nuclear reactions which includes breakup to all orders. Alternatively, the 3-body problem can be solved exactly within the Faddeev formalism which explicitly includes breakup and transfer channels to all orders. With the aim to understand how CDCC compares with the exact 3-body Faddeev formulation, we study deuteron induced reactions on: i) $^{10}$Be at $E_{\rm d}= 21.4, 40.9 \; {\rm and} \; 71$ MeV; ii) $^{12}$C at $E_{\rm d} = 12 \; {\rm and} \; 56$ MeV; and iii) $^{48}$Ca at $E_{\rm d} = 56$ MeV…
Practical methods to compute dipole strengths for a three-body system by using a discretized continuum are analyzed. New techniques involving Green's function are developed, either by correcting the tail of the approximate wave function in a direct calculation of the strength function or by using a solution of a driven Schroedinger equation in a summed expression of the strength. They are compared with the complex scaling method and the Lorentz integral transform, also making use of a discretized continuum. Numerical tests are performed with a hyperscalar three-body potential in the hyperspher…
It is shown that the continuum level density (CLD) at unbound energies can be calculated with the complex scaling method (CSM), in which the energy spectra of bound states, resonances and continuum states are obtained in terms of $L^2$ basis functions. In this method, the extended completeness relation is applied to the calculation of the Green functions, and the continuum-state part is approximately expressed in terms of discretized complex scaled continuum solutions. The obtained result is compared with the CLD calculated exactly from the scattering phase shift. The discretization in the CSM…
Background: Microscopic description of the projectile, based on an effective NN interaction, in a microscopic CDCC (MCDCC) model [PRL 111, 082701 (2013)] has been successfully applied to the 7Li+208Pb scattering. Purpose: The MCDCC method is applied to the low energy elastic scattering of 17F, 17O and 19F on 58Ni and 208Pb targets. The goal of the calculations is twofold - to test the adequacy and the accuracy of the MCDCC model for the heavier projectiles, and to study the contribution of various channels to the elastic scattering cross sections. Methods: The elastic scattering cross sections…

Background: In the continuum-discretized coupled-channel method, a breakup cross section (BUX) is obtained as an admixture of several components of different channels in multi-channel scattering. Purpose: Our goal is to propose an approximate way of decomposing the discretized BUX into components of each channel. This approximation is referred to as the "probability separation (P-separation)". Method: As an example, we consider $^{11}$Be scattering by using the three-body model with core excitation ($^{10}\mathrm{Be}+n+\mathrm{T}$, where T is a target). The structural part is constructed by th…
We accurately analyze the $^6$He+$^{209}$Bi scattering at 19 and 22.5 MeV near the Coulomb barrier energy, using the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method (CDCC) based on the $n$+$n$+$^4$He+$^{209}$Bi four-body model. The three-body breakup continuum of $^6$He is discretized by diagonalizing the internal Hamiltonian of $^6$He in a space spanned by the Gaussian basis functions. The calculated elastic and total reaction cross sections are in good agreement with the experimental data, while the CDCC calculation based on the di-neutron model of $^6$He, i.e., the $^2n$+$^{4}$He+$^{209}$Bi t…
A continuum-QRPA approach to calculation of the $2νββ$- and $0νββ$-amplitudes has been formulated. For $^{130}$Te a regular suppression (about 20%) of the high-multipole contributions to the $0νββ$-amplitude has been found which can be associated with additional ground state correlations appearing from the transitions to collective states in the continuum. At the same time the total calculated $0νββ$-amplitude for $^{130}$Te gets suppressed by about 20% as compared to the result of the usual, discretized, QRPA.
We have calculated the strength distributions of the dipole response in spherical nuclei, ranging all over the periodic table. The calculations were performed within two microscopic models: the discretized quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) and the quasiparticle continuum RPA, which takes into account the coupling of the single-particle continuum in an exact way. Pairing correlations are treated with the BCS model. In the calculations, two density functionals were used, namely the functional PC-F1 and the functional DD-PC1. Both are based on relativistic point coupling Lagrangians…
The direct comparison of two different continuum discretization methods towards the solution of a composite particle scattering off a nucleus is presented. The first approach -- the Continumm-Discretized Coupled Channel method -- is based on the differential equation formalism, while the second one -- the Wave-Packet Continuum Discretization method -- uses the integral equation formulation for the composite-particle scattering problem. As benchmark calculations we have chosen the deuteron off \nuc{58}{Ni} target scattering (as a realistic illustrative example) at three different incident energ…
We present a new reaction model, which permits the description of reactions where both colliding nuclei present a low threshold to breakup. The method corresponds to a four-body extension of the Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel (CDCC) model. We first discuss the theoretical formalism, and then apply the method to 11Be+d scattering at Ecm = 45.5 MeV. The 11Be nucleus and the deuteron are described by 10Be+n and p + n structures, respectively. The model involves very large bases, but we show that an accurate description of elastic-scattering data may be achieved only when continuum states o…
The semiclassical method of Alder and Winther is generalized to study fusion reactions. As an illustration, we evaluate the fusion cross section in a schematic two-channel calculation. The results are shown to be in good agreement with those obtained with a quantal Coupled-Channels calculation. We suggest that in the case of coupling to continuum states this approach may provide a simpler alternative to the Continuum Discretized Coupled-Channels method.
The eXtended Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel (XCDCC) method is developed to treat reactions where core degrees of freedom play a role. The projectile is treated as a multi-configuration coupled channels system generated from a valence particle coupled to a deformed core which is allowed to excite. The coupled channels initial state breaks up into a coupled channels continuum which is discretized into bins, similarly to the original CDCC method. Core collective degrees of freedom are also included in the interaction of the core and the target, so that dynamical effects can occur during th…
Breakup reactions are one of the favored probes to study loosely bound nuclei, particularly those in the limit of stability forming a halo. In order to interpret such breakup experiments, the continuum discretized coupled channel method is typically used. In this study, the first Bayesian analysis of a breakup reaction model is performed. We use a combination of statistical methods together with a three-body reaction model (the continuum discretized coupled channel method) to quantify the uncertainties on the breakup observables due to the parameters in the effective potential describing the l…
The problem of Coulomb breakup in the scattering of a two-body loosely bound projectile by a heavy target is addressed. A basis of transformed harmonic oscillator (THO) wave functions is used to discretize the projectile continuum and to diagonalize the Hamiltonian of the two-body system. Results for the reaction $^{8}$B+$^{58}$Ni at subcoulomb energies are presented. Comparison of different observables with those obtained with the standard Continuum Discretized Coupled-Channels (CDCC) method shows good agreement between both approaches.
The goal of this paper is to calculate bound, resonant and scattering states in the coupled-channel formalism without relying on the boundary conditions at large distances. The coupled-channel solution is expanded in eigenchannel bases i.e. in eigenfunctions of diagonal Hamiltonians. Each eigenchannel basis may include discrete and discretized continuum (real or complex energy) single particle states. The coupled-channel solutions are computed through diagonalization in these bases. The method is applied to a few two-channels problems. The exact bound spectrum of the Poeschl-Teller potential i…
We investigate the influence of couplings among continuum states in collisions of weakly bound nuclei. For this purpose, we compare cross sections for complete fusion, breakup and elastic scattering evaluated by continuum discretized coupled channel (CDCC) calculations, including and not including these couplings. In our study, we discuss this influence in terms of the polarization potentials that reproduce the elastic wave function of the coupled coupled channel method in single channel calculations. We find that the inclusion of couplings among the continuum states renders the real part of t…
Background: The numerical solution of few-body scattering problems with realistic interactions is a difficult problem that normally must be solved on powerful supercomputers, taking a lot of computer time. This strongly limits the possibility of accurate treatments for many important few-particle problems in different branches of quantum physics. Purpose: To develop a new general highly effective approach for the practical solution of few-body scattering equations that can be implemented on a graphics processing unit. Methods: The general approach is realized in three steps: (i) the reformulat…
We investigate the 9Be + 208Pb elastic scattering and fusion at energies around the Coulomb barrier. The $^9$Be nucleus is described in a α+ α+ n three-body model, using the hyperspherical coordinate method. The scattering with $^{208}$Pb is then studied with the Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel (CDCC) method, where the α+ α+ n continuum is approximated by a discrete number of pseudostates. Optical potentials for the $α+^{208}$Pb and $n+^{208}$Pb systems are taken from the literature. We present elastic-scattering and fusion cross sections at different energies, and investigate the conver…
Background: The influence of halo structure of $^6$He, $^8$B, $^{11}$Be and $^{11}$Li nuclei in several mechanisms such as direct reactions and fusion is already established, although not completely understood. The influence of the $^{10}$C Brunnian structure is less known. Purpose: To investigate the influence of the cluster configuration of $^{10}$C on the elastic scattering at an energy close to the Coulomb barrier. Methods: We present experimental data for the elastic scattering of the $^{10}$C+$^{208}$Pb system at $E_{\rm lab}$ = 66 MeV. The data are compared to the three- and the four-bo…
The Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels (CDCC) has been successfully employed to describe elastic and breakup of nuclear reactions induced by weakly bound projectiles. In this contribution, we review some other, less widespread applications of the CDCC wavefunction, some of them in combination with other reaction formalisms, which are being currently employed in the analysis of reactions involving three or more fragments in the initial or final state.
