We investigate the line element of spacetime around a linear cosmic string in the presence of a cosmological constant. We obtain the metric and argue that it should be discarded because of asymptotic considerations. Then a time dependent and consistent form of the metric is obtained and its properties are discussed.
The spontaneous loss of angular momentum of a spinning cosmic string due to particle emission is discussed. The rate of particle production between two assymptotic spacetimes: the spinning cosmic string spacetime in the infinite past and a non-spinning cosmic string spacetime in the infinite future is calculated.
We study the behaviour of a non-relativistic quantum particle interacting with different potentials, in the background spacetime generated by a cosmic string. We find the energy spectra for the quantum systems under consideration and discuss how they differ from their flat Minkowski spacetime values.
In this article we study the geodesic motion of test particles and light in the five-dimensional (rotating) black string spacetime. If a compact dimension is added to the four-dimensional Schwarzschild or Kerr spacetime, the new five-dimensional metric describes a (rotating) black string. The geodesics in the Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetime have been studied in great detail, however, when a compact dimension is added new behaviour occurs. We present the analytical solutions of the geodesic equations and discuss the possible orbits. The motion in the ordinary four-dimensional Schwarzschild and…
We analyse the properties of a fluid generating a spinning cosmic string spacetime with flat limiting cases corresponding to a constant angular momentum in the infinite past and static configuration in the infinite future. The spontaneous loss of angular momentum of a spinning cosmic string due to particle emission is discussed. The rate of particle production between the spinning and non-spinning cosmic string spacetimes is calculated.
Distributional sources of cosmic walls crossed by cosmic strings from Riemann-Cartan (RC) Geometry. The matter density of the planar wall is maximum at the point where the cosmic string crosses the cosmic wall. Cartan torsion is has a support on the cosmic string given by the Dirac $ δ$-function. Off the sources are left with a torsionless vacuum.
We prove strong cosmic censorship for T^2-symmetric cosmological spacetimes (with spatial topology T^3 and vanishing cosmological constant Lambda) with collisionless matter. Gowdy symmetric spacetimes constitute a special case. The formulation of the conjecture is in terms of generic C^2-inextendibility of the metric. Our argument exploits a rigidity property of Cauchy horizons, inherited from Killing fields.
The interpretation of so-called cosmic string in black hole spacetimes has settled down to an unsatisfactory state. In this article we try to provide a different model for these cosmic strings by explicit construction of these spacetimes from the Bonnor rocket solution. It is shown that the correct stress-energy tensor is that of null dust with a rather strange energy density --- first derivative of Dirac delta distribution. We will discuss the Schwarzschild solution and the C--metric. In the latter case we will show that there is a momentum flux through the cosmic string, causing the accelera…
In a certain sense riemannian geometry can be thought of as geometry built up from the finslerian properties of point particles. The generalization of this to where the geometry is built up from the finslerian properties of string and membranes is investigated. Solely classical arguments suggest a physical interpretation in which microscopic strings are directly related to macroscopic geometry; alternatively the resulting geometry can be interpretated as that describing microsopic spacetime.
In this work cosmological models are considered for the low energy string cosmological effective action (tree level) in the absence of dilaton potential. A two parametric non-diagonal family of analytic solutions is found. The curvature is non singular, however the string coupling diverges exponentially.
A class of curved spacetimes with global parabolic isometries (GPI) is introduced. These isometries have fixed point sets on two-dimensional null surfaces which can be interpreted as worldsheets of massless cosmic strings. Back reaction effects of the strings in such spacetimes can be described exactly, in terms of a nontrivial holonomy at the worldsheet. We show that the GPI spacetimes are type $N$ geometries of the Petrov classification. We describe a number of features of these spacetimes, including properties of Killing horizons associated to GPI. As an example, we consider a circular mass…
We calculate the electromagnetic self-force on a stationary linear distribution of four-current in the spacetime of multiple cosmic strings. It is shown that if the current is infinitely thin and stretched along a line which is parallel to the strings the problem admits an explicit solution.
Misner spacetime is among the simplest solutions of Einstein's equation that exhibits a Cauchy horizon with a smooth extension beyond it. Besides violating strong cosmic censorship, this extension contains closed timelike curves. We analyze the stability of the Cauchy horizon, and prove that neighboring spacetimes in one parameter families of solutions through Misner's in pure gravity, gravity coupled to a scalar field, or Einstein-Maxwell theory, end at the Cauchy horizon developing a curvature singularity.
Cylindrically symmetric stationary spacetimes are examined in the framework of string-inpired generalized theory of gravity. In four dimensions this theory contains a dilatonic scalar field in addition to gravity. A charged perfect fluid representing fermionic matter is also considered. Explicit solution is given and a discussion of the geometrical properties of the solutions found is carried out.
The Ernst spacetime is a solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations describing two charged black holes accelerating apart in a uniform electric (or magnetic) field. As the field approaches a critical value, the black hole horizon appears to touch the acceleration horizon. We show that weak cosmic censorship cannot be violated by increasing the field past this critical value: The event horizon remains intact. On the other hand, strong cosmic censorship does appear to be violated in this spacetime: For a certain range of parameters, we find evidence that the inner horizon is classically stable.
We consider a local cosmic string described by the Abelian-Higgs model in the framework of scalar-tensor gravities. We find the metric of the cosmic string in the weak-field approximation. The propagation of particles and light is analysed in this background. This analysis shows that the (unperturbed) cosmic string in scalar-tensor theories presents some analogous features to the wiggly cosmic string in General Relativity.
The exact metric around a wiggly cosmic string is found by modifying the energy momentum-tensor of a straight infinitely thin cosmic string to include an electric current along the symmetry axis.
In dilaton gravity theories, we consider a string-like topological defect formed during U(1) gauge symmetry-breaking phase transition in the early Universe, and far from the cosmic string we have vacuum solutions of the generalized Einstein equation. We discuss how they can be related to the flatness of galactic rotation curves.
We study the vacuum polarization effect in the spacetime generated by a magnetic flux cosmic string in the framework of a scalar-tensor gravity. The vacuum expectation values of the energy-momentum tensor of a conformally coupled scalar field are calculated. The dilaton's contribution to the vacuum polarization effect is shown explicitly.
In this paper we add a compact dimension to Schwarzschild-(anti-) de sitter and Kerr-(anti-) de sitter spacetimes, which describes (rotating) black string-(anti-) de sitter spacetime. We study the geodesic motion of test particles and light rays in this spacetime. We present the analytical solutions of the geodesic equations in terms of Weierstrass elliptic and Kleinian sigma hyperelliptical functions. We also discuss the possible orbits and classify them according to particle's energy and angular momentum. Moreover, the obtained results, are compared to Schwarzschild-(anti-) de sitter and Ker…
We extend the work done for cosmic strings and show that for a more general class of locally flat metrics the one loop calculation do not introduce any new divergences to the VEV of the energy of a scalar particle. We explicitly perform the calculation for the configuration where we have one cosmic string in the presence of a dipole made out of cosmic strings.
We find a class of solutions of Einstein's field equations representing spacetime outside a spinning cosmic string surrounded by a gas of non-spinning cosmic strings, and show that there exist closed timelike geodesics in this spacetime.
Topological defects experimentally induced by rotational dynamics in a continuous media replicate the coherent structure features of cosmic strings as well as hadrons.
We study massless cosmic strings which are one-dimensional objects moving with the speed of light. Perturbations of velocities of test bodies and anisotropy of cosmic microwave background generated by massless cosmic strings are analysed. These phenomena are analogous to the string wake effect and the Kaiser-Stebbins effect for standard (massive) cosmic strings. There are two regimes depending on the energy $E$ of a massless string per unit length. At low energies, $EG/c^4\ll 1$, massless and massive strings act similarly. At high energies, $EG/c^4 \sim 1$, massless string effects are quite di…
Presently, the inclusion of the vacuum energy in the energy momentum tensor, and the inclusion of the extra dimensions in the spacetime, can not be rule out of the research in gravitation. In this work we study the influence of the vacuum energy in the collapse process of a stellar fluid, and consequently for the cosmic censorship conjecture, considering a homogeneous and isotropic spacetime with arbitrary number of dimensions. We discuss the active gravitational mass of the black hole formed, where the vacuum energy and the number of dimensions has a crucial role in the process.
Dirac equation for a general black hole metric having a cosmic string is derived. The quasi-normal mode frequencies for Schwarzschild, RN extremal, SdS and near extremal SdS black hole space-times with cosmic string perturbed by a massless Dirac field are obtained using WKB approximation and found that in all these cases, decay is less in black holes having cosmic string compared to black holes with out string.
We consider the metric perturbations around a stationary rotating Nambu-Goto string in Minkowski spacetime. By solving the linearized Einstein equations, we study the effects of azimuthal frame-dragging around the rotation axis and linear frame-dragging along the rotation axis, the Newtonian logarithmic potential, and the angular deficit around the string as the potential mode. We also investigate gravitational waves propagating off the string and propagating along the string, and show that the stationary rotating string emits gravitational waves toward the directions specified by discrete ang…
An implicit, fully characteristic, numerical scheme for solving the field equations of a cosmic string coupled to gravity is described. The inclusion of null infinity as part of the numerical grid allows us to apply suitable boundary conditions on the metric and matter fields to suppress unphysical divergent solutions. The code is tested by comparing the results with exact solutions, checking that static cosmic string initial data remain constant when evolved and undertaking a time dependent convergence analysis of the code. It is shown that the code is accurate, stable and exhibits clear seco…
Circular massless cosmic strings which move with the speed of light in the de Sitter universe are described. Construction of the background geometry is based on parabolic isometries of the de Sitter spacetime. Microscopic circular cosmic strings may appear at the Planck epoch and then grow up to the Hubble size. We analyze: images of the strings, influence of strings on trajectories of matter, formation of overdensities, and shifts of energies of photons. These effects allow one to discriminate massless strings from their massive cousins. The present work extends our results on straight massle…
Gravitational and massless particle radiation of straight cosmic strings with finite thickness is studied analytically. It is found that the non-linear interaction of the radiation fields emitted by a cosmic string with the ones of the string always makes the spacetime singular at the symmetry axis. The singularity is not removable and is a scalar one.
The interaction of a cosmic string and a maximally charged dilatonic black hole is studied in the low-velocity limit. In particular, the string-black hole scattering at a low velocity is investigated.
We extend the work done for cosmic strings on the perturbative calculation of vacuum polarization of a massless field in the space-time of multiple cosmic strings and show that for a more general class of locally flat metrics the one loop calculation do not introduce any new divergences to the VEV of the energy of a scalar particle or a spinor particle. We explicitly perform the calculation for the configuration where we have one cosmic string in the presence of a dipole made out of cosmic strings both for the scalar and the spinor cases.
We study the interaction of a massless quantized spinor field with the gravitational filed of N parallel static cosmic strings by using a perturbative approach. We show that the presence of more than one cosmic string gives rise to an additional contribution to the energy density of vacuum fluctuations, thereby leading to a vacuum force attraction between two parallel cosmic strings.
The null string's equations of motion and constraints in the Kerr spacetime are given. We assume a generic ansatz for the null strings in the Kerr spacetime and we present the resulting solutions in quadratures. Some specific string configurations, that follow from the generic one, are considered separately. In each case we also extract the corresponding solutions in the Schwarzschild spacetime.
We give a brief overview of the nature of spacetime emerging from string theory. This is radically different from the familiar spacetime of Einstein's relativity. At a perturbative level, the spacetime metric appears as ``coupling constants" in a two dimensional quantum field theory. Nonperturbatively (with certain boundary conditions), spacetime is not fundamental but must be reconstructed from a holographic, dual theory.
In the interface between general relativity and relativistic quantum mechanics, we analyse rotating effects on the scalar field subject to a hard-wall confining potential. We consider three different scenarios of general relativity given by the cosmic string spacetime, the spacetime with space-like dislocation and the spacetime with a spiral dislocation. Then, by searching for a discrete spectrum of energy, we analyse analogues effects of the Aharonov-Bohm effect for bound states and the Sagnac effect.
We present a framework for reducing all possible cohomogeneity-one strings, i.e., strings with geometrical symmetry, in a given spacetime to mechanical systems, and for analyzing integrability of the systems. As applications, it is clarified whether the systems of cohomogeneity-one strings in $AdS_5$, $AdS_5 \times S^5$, and $AdS_5 \times T^{p,q}$ are integrable or not. This method may reveal a different type of hidden symmetry of spacetimes.
Two dimensional classical string theory is solved in any curved spacetime. The complete spacetime required to describe the classical string motions turns out to be larger than the global space required by complete particle geodesics. The solutions are fully classified by their behavior in the asymptotically flat region of spacetime. When the curvature is smooth, the string solutions are deformed folded string solutions as compared to flat spacetime folded strings that were known for 19 years. However, surprizing new stringy behavior becomes evident at curvature singularities such as black hole…
In this paper we present well-posedness results of the wave equation in $H^{1}$ for spacetimes that contain string-like singularities. These results extend a framework able to characterise gravitational singularities as obstruction to the dynamics of test fields rather than point particles. In particular, we discuss spacetimes with cosmic strings and the relation of our results to the Strong Cosmic Censorship Conjecture.
In this contribution, we study the Dirac oscillator under the influence of noninertial effects of a rotating frame in the cosmic string spacetime. We show that both noninertial effects and the topology of the cosmic string spacetime restrict the physical region of the spacetime where the quantum particle can be placed, and discuss two different cases of bound states solutions of the Dirac equation by analysing the behaviour of the Dirac oscillator frequency.
This is a chapter of the planned monograph "Out of Nowhere: The Emergence of Spacetime in Quantum Theories of Gravity", co-authored by Nick Huggett and Christian Wüthrich and under contract with Oxford University Press. (More information at www.beyondspacetime.net.) This chapter analyses the nature and derivation of spacetime topology and geometry according to string theory.
The string propagation equations in axisymmetric spacetimes are exactly solved by quadratures for a planetoid Ansatz. This is a straight non-oscillating string, radially disposed, which rotates uniformly around the symmetry axis of the spacetime. In Schwarzschild black holes, the string stays outside the horizon pointing towards the origin. In de Sitter spacetime the planetoid rotates around its center. We quantize semiclassically these solutions and analyze the spin/(mass$^2$) (Regge) relation for the planetoids, which turns out to be non-linear.
In the present paper we investigate the classical self-interaction associated with a charged scalar point particle placed at rest in the gravitational field of a linear topological defect known in literature as cosmic dispiration, a combination of a cosmic string with a screw dislocation. We found exact expressions for the Green's function and, consequently, for the self-energy by considering both massive and massless scalar point particles. We present numerical graphs and analyze the nature of the self-interactions in the cosmic dispiration spacetime itself and in the cases of pure screw disl…
Recent results on classical and quantum strings in a variety of black hole and cosmological spacetimes, in various dimensions, are presented. The curved backgrounds under consideration include the $2+1$ black hole anti de Sitter spacetime and its dual, the black string, the ordinary $D\geq 4$ black holes with or without a cosmological constant, the de Sitter and anti de Sitter spacetimes and static Robertson-Walker spacetimes. Exact solutions to the string equations of motion and constraints are obtained in these backgrounds and their physical properties (length, energy, pressure) are describe…
We study the average rate of change of energy for a static atom immersed in a thermal bath of electromagnetic radiation in the cosmic string spacetime and separately calculate the contributions of thermal fluctuations and radiation reaction. We find that the transition rates are crucially dependent on the atom-string distance and polarization of the atom and they in general oscillate as the atom-string distance varies. Moreover, the atomic transition rates in the cosmic string spacetime can be larger or smaller than those in Minkowski spacetime contingent upon the atomic polarization and posit…
Special multi-cosmic string metrics are analytically extended to describe configurations of Wheeler-Misner wormholes and ordinary cosmic strings. I investigate in detail the case of flat, asymptotically Minkowskian, Wheeler-Misner wormhole spacetimes generated by two cosmic strings, each with tension $-1/4G$.
We explore a scenario of the general relativity determined by the framework of the rainbow gravity with the purpose of searching for analogues of the Aharonov-Bohm effect. By focusing on the confinement of the Dirac field and the scalar field to a hard-wall confining potential in a modified background of the cosmic string spacetime, we examine the effects of the rainbow gravity and the topology of the cosmic string spacetime. Then, we compare each spectrum of energy with the cases where the rainbow gravity is absent.
We explore the symmetries of classical stationary spacetimes in terms of the dynamics of a spinning string described by a worldsheet supersymmetric action. We show that for stationary configurations of the string, the action reduces to that for a pseudo-classical spinning point particle in an effective space, which is a conformally scaled quotient space of the original spacetime. As an example, we consider the stationary spinning string in the Kerr-Newman spacetime, whose motion is equivalent to that of the spinning point particle in the three-dimensional effective space. We present the Killin…
Global U(1) strings with cylindrical symmetry are studied in anti-de Sitter spacetime. According as the magnitude of negative cosmological constant, they form regular global cosmic strings, extremal black cosmic strings and charged black cosmic strings, but no curvature singularity is involved. The relationship between the topological charge of a neutral global string and the black hole charge is clarified by duality transformation. Physical relevance as straight string is briefly discussed.
Cobalt nanoparticle-based ferrofluid in the presence of external magnetic field forms a self-assembled hyperbolic metamaterial. Wave equation describing propagation of extraordinary light inside the ferrofluid exhibits 2+1 dimensional Lorentz symmetry. The role of time in the corresponding effective 3D Minkowski spacetime is played by the spatial coordinate directed along the periodic nanoparticle chains aligned by the magnetic field. Here we present a microscopic study of point, linear, planar and volume defects of the nanoparticle chain structure and demonstrate that they may exhibit strong …
We make a systematic investigation of stationary cylindrically symmetric solutions to the five-dimensional Einstein and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet equations. Apart from the five-dimensional neutral cosmic string metric, we find two new exact solutions which qualify as cosmic strings, one corresponding to an electrically charged cosmic string, the other to an extended superconducting cosmic string surrounding a charged core. In both cases, test particles are deflected away from the singular line source. We extend both kinds of solutions to exact multi-cosmic string solutions.
We present here a brief review and discussion on recent developments in the theory of spacetime singularities. After mentioning some key motivations on the main ideas and concepts involved, we take the approach that the singularities will be eventually resolved by the quantum gravity effects. Some consequences are indicated when such singularities are visible to far away observers in the universe.
Black holes have been a subject of investigation over years not only because they have interesting physical properties, but also because they seem to be the appropriate tool for studying gravity in quantum scale. Although a lot of effort has been made to understand the aspects of spacetime on the quantum scale, the approach which includes noncommutativity of spacetime proves to be promising among several possibilities. In this paper, we use the Hamilton-Jacobi method to study the thermodynamic properties of cylindrical black holes (black strings) in noncommutative spacetime. It is also investi…
We first calculate equations of motion for particles in the Kerr-Sen-de Sitter black hole spacetime. Then in the eikonal regime, we analytically obtain the quasi-normal resonant modes of massless neutral scalar field perturbation and find its imaginary part to be characterized by the surface gravity of the near-extremal Kerr-Sen-de Sitter black hole with Cauchy horizon approaching the event horizon. We further show that the Penrose strong cosmic censorship conjecture is thus respected in this spacetime with dilaton scalar field and axion pseudoscalar field.
Equations of motion of null cosmic strings near black holes, or other massive sources, are solved exactly in the weak field approximation. The stress-energy tensor of a null string in a curved spacetime is introduced and used to show how scattering by black holes transforms linear and angular momenta of the string. The corresponding recoil effect of a black hole and change of its angular momentum caused by a null cosmic string are calculated. For a null string, its energy $μ$ per unit length evolves along the null direction of the string trajectory. The evolution of $μ$ is connected with a str…
We argue that the emergent spacetime picture admits a background-independent formulation of cosmic inflation. The inflation in this picture corresponds to the dynamical emergence of spacetime while the conventional inflation is simply an (exponential) expansion of a preexisting spacetime owing to the vacuum energy carried by an inflaton field. We show that the cosmic inflation arises as a time-dependent solution of the matrix quantum mechanics describing the dynamical process of Planck energy condensate in vacuum without introducing any inflaton field as well as an {\it ad hoc} inflation poten…
The exact general solution of circular strings in $2+1$ dimensional de Sitter spacetime is described completely in terms of elliptic functions. The novel feature here is that one single world-sheet generically describes {\it infinitely many} (different and independent) strings. This has no analogue in flat spacetime. The circular strings are either oscillating ("stable") or indefinitely expanding ("unstable"). We then compute the {\it exact} equation of state of circular strings in the $2+1$ dimensional de Sitter (dS) and anti de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes, and analyze its properties for the diff…
In this paper we present a complete and detailed analysis of the calculation of both the Wightman function and the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor that arise from quantum vacuum fluctuations of massive and massless scalar fields in the cosmic dispiration spacetime, which is formed by the combination of two topological defects: a cosmic string and a screw dislocation. This spacetime is obtained in the framework of the Einstein-Cartan theory of gravity and is considered to be a chiral space-like cosmic string. For completeness we perform the calculation in a high-dimension…

The particle transmutation phenomena in asymptotically flat spacetimes are detailed including fermion-boson transitions in supergravity backgrounds. The next chapters review the exactly solvable cases…
