We discuss the behavior of a two-level system coupled to a quantum dot contacted by superconducting source/drain electrodes, representing a simple model for the conformational degree of freedom of a molecular dot or a break junction. The Josephson current is shown to induce conformational changes, including a complete reversal. For small bias voltage, periodic conformational motions induced by Landau-Zener transitions between Andreev states are predicted.
Josephson junctions and superconducting wires when probed with current pulses exhibit stochastic switching from superconducting to a stable non-zero voltage state. Electrical current dependence of the switching probability (so called S-curve) or switching current distribution is a fingerprint of the physics governing the escape process. This work addresses the criterion of independent switching event in a series of switching experiments. Treating Josephson junction as an electrical coin with current-tuned switching probability we investigate effect of correlation between switching events on th…
We investigate electronic transport in single layer graphene coupled to superconducting electrodes. In these Josephson transistors, we observe significant suppression in the critical current Ic and large variation in the product IcRn in comparison to theoretic predictions in the ballistic limit. We show that the depression of Ic can be explained by premature switching in underdamped Josephson junctions described within the resistively and capacitively shunted junction (RCSJ) model. By considering the effect of premature switching and dissipation, the calculated gate dependence of product IcRn …
Control of the Josephson current by varying a gate current has recently been demonstrated in both 4-terminal and 3-terminal junctions. We show that, when the the gates are weakly coupled to the Josephson junction, the Josephson current versus gate current (or versus gate voltage) relation is the same for both the 4- and 3- terminal geometries. At low temperature, the supercurrent switches abruptly as a function of the gate voltage, but only slowly as a function of the gate current.
We calculate the electrical currents through a superconductor - insulator - superconductor junction which is also weakly coupled to a normal metal side probe. The voltage $V$ applied to the normal metal terminal controls the occupation of Andreev energy levels $E_n$, and therefore controls the Josephson current flowing through these levels. Whenever the probe voltage crosses an Andreev level, the Josephson current changes abruptly by an amount equal to the current flowing through the Andreev level. The differential conductance along the normal metal terminal permits spectroscopy of the Andreev…
We study the voltage noise properties including the switching rates and statistics of phase-slips in moderately damped Josephson junctions using a novel efficient numerical approach combining the matrix continued-fraction method with the full counting statistics. By analyzing the noise results obtained for the RCSJ model we identify different dominating components, namely the thermal noise close to equilibrium (small current-bias regime), the shot noise of (multiple) phase-slips in the intermediate range of biases and the switching noise for yet higher bias currents. We extract thus far inacce…
We investigate the DC Josephson effect in a superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junction where the normal region consists of a ballistic ring. We show that a fully controllable $π$-junction can be realized through the electro-magnetostatic Aharonov-Bohm effect in the ring. The sign and the magnitude of the supercurrent can be tuned by varying the magnetic flux and the gate voltage applied to one arm, around suitable values. The implementation in a realistic set-up is discussed.
We predict that the amplitude of the Josephson current through an antiferromagnetic weak link changes by several orders of magnitude upon rotation of the Néel order parameter characterizing the staggered magnetic order. This occurs due the presence of spin-orbit coupling arising from structural inversion asymmetry which makes the band gap in the antiferromagnet highly sensitive to the staggered order parameter direction. We also demonstrate that when phase-biasing the junction, magnetization dynamics is induced which switches the direction of the Néel vector in the antiferromagnet. These resul…
We discuss the effects of thermal noise on the magnetic response of a lateral ferromagnetic Josephson junction with spin-orbit coupling and out-of-plane magnetization. The direction of the magnetic moment in the ferromagnetic layer can be inverted by using controlled current pulses. This phenomenon is due to the magnetoelectric effect that couples the flowing charge current and the magnetization of the ferromagnet. We investigate the magnetization reversal effect versus intrinsic parameters of the ferromagnet, such as the Gilbert damping and strength of the spin-orbit coupling. We estimate the…
Josephson current of spin-entangled electrons through the two branches of a SQUID-like structure with two quantum dots exhibits a magnetic-flux response different from the conventional Josephson current. Due to their interference, the period of maximum Josephson current changes from $h/2e$ to $h/e$, which can be used for detecting the Cooper-pair splitting efficiency. The nonlocal spin entanglement provides a quantum mechanical functionale for switching on and off this novel Josephson current, and explicitly a switch is formulated by including a pilot junction. It is shown that the device can …
We compute the critical Josephson current through a single-molecule junction. As a model for a molecule with a bistable conformational degree of freedom, we study an interacting single-level quantum dot coupled to a two-level system and weakly connected to two superconducting electrodes. We perform a lowest-order perturbative calculation of the critical current and show that it can significantly change due to the two-level system. In particular, the π-junction behavior, generally present for strong interactions, can be completely suppressed.
We report on the switching current distributions in nano-hybrid Josephson junctions made of InAs semiconductor nanowires. Temperature dependence of the switching current distribution can be understood by motion of Josephson phase particle escaping from a tilted washboard potential, fitted well to the macroscopic quantum tunneling, thermal activation and phase diffusion models, depending on temperature. Application of gate voltage to tune the Josephson coupling strength enables us to adjust the effective temperature for the escaping process, which would be promising for developing gate-tunable …
We investigate electronic transport in Josephson junctions formed by single-walled carbon nanotubes coupled to superconducting electrodes. We observe enhanced zero-bias conductance (up to 10e^2/h) and pronounced sub-harmonic gap structures in differential conductance, which arise from the multiple Andreev reflections at superconductor/nanotube interfaces. The voltage-current characteristics of these junctions display abrupt switching from the supercurrent branch to resistive branch, with a gate-tunable switching current ranging from 50 pA to 2.3 nA. The finite resistance observed on the superc…
We investigate the superconducting lifetime of long current-biased Josephson junctions, in the presence of Gaussian and non-Gaussian noise sources. In particular, we analyze the dynamics of a Josephson junction as a function of the noise signal intensity, for different values of the parameters of the system and external driving currents. We find that the mean lifetime of the superconductive state is characterized by nonmonotonic behavior as a function of noise intensity, driving frequency and junction length. We observe that these nonmonotonic behaviours are connected with the dynamics of the …
We investigate the roto-breathers recently observed in experiments on Josephson ladders subjected to a uniform transverse bias current. We describe the switching mechanism in which the number of rotating junctions increases. In the region close to switching we find that frequency locking, period doubling, quasi-periodic behaviour and symmetry breaking all occur. This suggests that a chaotic dynamic occurs in the switching process. Close to switching the induced flux increases sharply and clearly plays an important role in the switching mechanism. We also find three critical frequencies which a…
We have investigated the intrinsic Josephson properties in slightly underdoped (Hg,Re)Ba2Ca2Cu3Oy [Hg(Re)1223] intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) with a dimension of 1.0x1.5x0.11 um^3. The current-voltage characteristics of the IJJs exhibit clear multiple branches with subgap structures similar to those of other cuprate superconductors. The switching current distributions P(I) from the zero-voltage to the nonzero-voltage state in the current-biased IJJs agree well with the theoretical curves of the thermally assisted escape model at temperatures above ~5 K. The plasma frequency fp of the IJJ…
An experimental investigation of the critical current noise in underdamped niobium based Josephson junctions by a technique based on the switching current measurements is reported. By sweeping the junction with a current ramp we measure the critical current switching using the standard time of flight technique and analyze the data to extract the current noise. The experimental results show a linear behavior of the current white noise from both the junction area and the temperature. These measurement provide very useful information about the intrinsic noise of Josephson devices involving SQUIDs…
We study the thermal escape problem in the low damping limit. We find that finiteness of the barrier is crucial for explaining the thermal activation results. In this regime low barrier non-equilibrium corrections to the usual theories become necessary. We propose a simple theoretical extension accounting for these non-equilibrium processes which agrees numerical results. We apply our theory to the understanding of switching current curves in underdamped Josephson junctions.
We investigated the switching dynamics of two kinds of EuBa2Cu3Oy (Eu123) intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) with different anisotropy parameters gamma (= (m*c/m*ab)1/2) tuned to 37 and 22. In contrast to weakly-coupled IJJs in Bi2212, significant deviations from the thermally activated escape model of a single-stack Josephson junction were observed in their switching current distributions, P(I), due to the strongly-coupled nature of the Eu123 IJJs, The P(I) of the two IJJs are found to be independent of temperature, below 1.4 K and 4.2 K, respectively; which indicates the observation of mac…
We propose theoretically a thermal switch operating by the magnetic-flux controlled diffraction of phase-coherent heat currents in a thermally biased Josephson junction based on a two-dimensional topological insulator. For short junctions, the system shows a sharp switching behavior while for long junctions the switching is smooth. Physically, the switching arises from the Doppler shift of the superconducting condensate due to screening currents induced by a magnetic flux. We suggest a possible experimental realization that exhibits a relative temperature change of 40\% between the on and off …
Swept bias experiments carried out on Josephson junctions yield the distributions of the probabilities of early switching from the zero voltage state. Kramers' theory of thermally activated escape from a one-dimensional potential is well known to fall short of explaining such experiments when the junctions are at millikelvin temperatures. We propose a simple revision of the theory which is shown to yield extremely good agreement with experimental data.

We present switching current measurements in niobium-aluminum oxide-niobium underdamped Josephson rings. Underdamped Josephson rings display hysteretic current-voltage curves which can be characterized by their switching current, the value of applied current at which the junctions switch to the energy-gap voltage. The value of the switching current is strongly affected by temperature and by the presence of fluxons in the system. We observe a very small voltage (0.2 nV) across the ring prior to switching, indicating a low-velocity fluxon diffusion state before the jump to a full running state. …
We consider a superconducting coplanar waveguide resonator where the central conductor is interrupted by a series of uniformly spaced Josephson junctions. The device forms an extended medium that is optically nonlinear on the single photon level with normal modes that inherit the full nonlinearity of the junctions but are nonetheless accessible via the resonator ports. For specific plasma frequencies of the junctions a set of normal modes clusters in a narrow band and eventually become entirely degenerate. Upon increasing the intensity of a red detuned drive on these modes, we observe a sharp …
We have developed a scheme for a high resolution measurement of the switching current distribution of a current biased Josephson tunnel junction using a timing technique. The measurement setup is implemented such that the digital control and read-out electronics are optically decoupled from the analog bias electronics attached to the sample. We have successfully used this technique to measure the thermal activation and the macroscopic quantum tunneling of the phase in a small Josephson tunnel junction with a high experimental resolution. This technique may be employed to characterize current-b…
We propose a threshold detector for Lévy distributed fluctuations based on a Josephson junction. The Lévy noise current added to a linearly ramped bias current results in clear changes in the distribution of switching currents out of the zero-voltage state of the junction. We observe that the analysis of the cumulative distribution function of the switching currents supplies information on both the characteristics shape parameter $α$ of the Lévy statistics and the intensity of the fluctuations. Moreover, we discuss a theoretical model which allows to extract characteristic features of the Lévy…
We study the dynamics of multi-junction switching (MJS): several intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) in an array switch to the finite voltage state simultaneously. The number of multi-switching junctions ($N$) was successfully tuned by changing the load resistance serially connected to an Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ IJJ array. The independence of the escape rates of $N$ in the macroscopic quantum tunneling regime indicates that MJS is a $successive$ switching process rather than a $collective$ process. The origin of MJS is explained by the gradient of a load curve and the relative m…
The transient dynamics of long overlap Josephson junctions in the frame of the sine-Gordon model with a white noise source is investigated. The effect of noise delayed decay is observed for the case of overdamped sine-Gordon equation. It is shown that this noise induced effect, in the range of small noise intensities, vanishes for junctions lengths greater than several Josephson penetration length.
Experiments on the distributions of switching currents in Josephson junctions are sensitive probes of the mechanism by which a junction changes abruptly to a finite voltage state. At low temperatures data exhibit smooth and gradual deviations from the expectations of the classical theory of thermal activation over the barrier in the tilted washboard potential. In this paper it is shown that if a very small proportion of the noise energy entering the apparatus at room temperature survives filtering and reaches the sample, it can enhance the escape rate sufficiently to replicate experimental obs…
We present an experimental and theoretical study of row switching in two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays. We have observed novel dynamic states with peculiar percolative patterns of the voltage drop inside the arrays. These states were directly visualized using laser scanning microscopy and manifested by fine branching in the current-voltage characteristics of the arrays. Numerical simulations show that such percolative patterns have an intrinsic origin and occur independently of positional disorder. We argue that the appearance of these dynamic states is due to the presence of various m…
The switching dynamics of current-biased Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) was studied to clarify the effect of d-wave superconductivity and the stack structure on the switching properties. High quality IJJs were fabricated, and then the temperature dependence of the switching probability distribution was measured for the first and second switchings. Although the standard deviation of the distribution detected for both switchings showed similar saturation characteristics with decreasing temperature, the temperature at saturation was about 13 times higher …
We propose to use a time-dependent imaginary potential to describe quantum mechanical tunneling through time-varying potential barriers. We use Gamow solutions for stationary tunneling problems to justify our choice of potential, and we apply our method to describe tunneling of a mesoscopic quantum variable: the phase change across a Josephson junction. The Josephson junction phase variable behaves as the position coordinate of a particle moving in a tilted washboard potential, and our general solution to the motion in such a potential with a time-dependent tilt reproduces a number of features…
By coupling a harmonic oscillator to a quantum system it is possible to perform a dispersive measurement that is quantum non-demolition (QND), with minimal backaction. A non-linear oscillator has the advantage of measurement gain, but what is the backaction? Experiments on superconducting quantum bits (qubits) coupled to a non-linear Josephson oscillator have thus far utilized the switching of the oscillator near a dynamical bifurcation for sensitivity, and have demonstrated partial QND measurement. The detailed backaction associated with the switching process is complex, and may ultimately li…
We performed a novel phase sensitive microwave reflection experiment which directly probes the dynamics of the Josephson plasma resonance in both the linear and non-linear regime. When the junction was driven below the plasma frequency into the non-linear regime, we observed for the first time the transition between two different dynamical states predicted for non-linear systems. In our experiment, this transition appears as an abrupt change in the reflected signal phase at a critical excitation power.
We have investigated the classical phase dynamics of underdamped ferromagnetic Josephson junctions by measuring the switching probability in both the stationary and nonstationary regimes down to 350 mK. We found the escape temperature to be the bath temperature, with no evidence of additional spin noise. In the nonstationary regime, we have performed a pump-probe experiment on the Josephson phase by increasing the frequency of the junction current bias. We show that an incomplete energy relaxation leads to dynamical phase bifurcation. Bifurcation manifests itself as premature switching, result…
Carbon nanotube (CNT) Josephson junctions in the open quantum dot limit exhibit superconducting switching currents which can be controlled with a gate electrode. Shapiro voltage steps can be observed under radiofrequency current excitations, with a damping of the phase dynamics that strongly depends on the gate voltage. These measurements are described by a standard RCSJ model showing that the switching currents from the superconducting to the normal state are close to the critical current of the junction. The effective dynamical capacitance of the nanotube junction is found to be strongly gat…
In this paper, we present data for two nanocrystalline YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) samples which both exhibit Josephson-like Colossal Resistive Switching (JCRS) in voltage-current (V-I) traces from 4.2 K up to room temperature, in magnetic fields up to 8 T. We report Josephson-like hysteresis for both positive and negative current that has not been observed before in colossal resistive switching materials. Non-zero resistance was measured in transport measurements at all temperatures. At low temperatures (< 90 K), we also observed the usual properties for YBCO including weak superconducting and paramag…
The combination of superconducting and magnetic materials to create novel superconducting devices has been motivated by the discovery of Josephson critical current (Ics) oscillations as a function of magnetic layer thickness and the demonstration of devices with switchable critical currents. However, none of the hybrid devices have shown any spintronic effects, such as spin-transfer torque, which are currently used in room-temperature magnetic devices, including spin-transfer torque random-access memory and spin-torque nano-oscillators. We have developed nanopillar Josephson junctions with a m…

We discuss the use of a hysteretic Josephson junction to detect current fluctuations with frequencies below the plasma frequency of the junction. These adiabatic fluctuations are probed by switching measurements observing the noise-affected average rate of macroscopic quantum tunneling of the detector junction out of its zero-voltage state. In a proposed experimental scheme, frequencies of the noise are limited by an on-chip filtering circuit. The third cumulant of current fluctuations at the detector is related to an asymmetry of the switching rates.
We discuss the resonant activation phenomenon on a Josephson junction due to the coupling of the Josephson system with axions. We show how such an effect can be exploited for axion detection. A nonmonotonic behavior, with a minimum, of the mean switching time from the superconducting to the resistive state versus the ratio of the axion energy and the Josephson plasma energy is found. We demonstrate how variations in switching times make it possible to detect the presence of the axion field. An experimental protocol for observing axions through their coupling with a Josephson system is proposed…
We test the effect of an external RF field on the switching processes of magnetic Josephson junctions (MJJs) suitable for the realization of fast, scalable cryogenic memories compatible with Single Flux Quantum logic. We show that the combined application of microwaves and magnetic field pulses can improve the performances of the device, increasing the separation between the critical current levels corresponding to logical '0' and '1'. The enhancement of the current level separation can be as high as 80% using an optimal set of parameters. We demonstrate that external RF fields can be used as …
We develop a fast Magnetic Josephson Junction (MJJ) - a superconducting ferromagnetic device for a scalable high-density cryogenic memory compatible in speed and fabrication with energy-efficient Single Flux Quantum (SFQ) circuits. We present experimental results for Superconductor-Insulator-Ferromagnet-Superconductor (SIFS) MJJs with high characteristic voltage IcRn of >700 uV proving their applicability for superconducting circuits. By applying magnetic field pulses, the device can be switched between MJJ logic states. The MJJ IcRn product is only ~30% lower than that of conventional junctio…
The dc transport properties of long arrays of small Al Josephson junctions, biased through on-chip Cr resistors, are studied. The IV-characteristics show a large Coulomb threshold for current as well as negative-slope regions indicating the regime of autonomous Bloch oscillations up to rather high frequencies of f = I/2e ~1 GHz, comparable to those reported by other groups for single junctions. On the other hand, a small depth of the back-bending implies a low duty cycle and a broad spectrum of the oscillations, which we attribute to the insufficiently high impedance of the bias resistors. A s…
We report a theoretical analysis and experimental observation of the quantum dynamics of a single vortex-antivortex (VAV) pair confined in a long narrow annular Josephson junction. The switching of the junction from the superconducting state to the resistive state occurs via the dissociation of a pinned VAV pair. The pinning potential is controlled by external magnetic field $H$ and dc bias current $I$. We predict a specific magnetic field dependence of the oscillatory energy levels of the pinned VAV state and the crossover to a {\it macroscopic quantum tunneling} mechanism of VAV dissociation…
We investigate the dynamics of the phase variable of an ideal underdamped Josephson junction in switching current experiments. These experiments have provided the first evidence for macroscopic quantum tunneling in large Josephson junctions and are currently used for state read-out of superconducting qubits. We calculate the shape of the resulting macroscopic wavepacket and find that the propagation of the wavepacket long enough after a switching event leads to an average voltage increasing linearly with time.
We present the analysis of the mean switching time and its standard deviation of short overdamped Josephson junctions, driven by a direct current and a periodic signal. The effect of noise enhanced stability is investigated. It is shown that fluctuations may both decrease and increase the switching time.
An extended Josephson junction intrinsically couples the superconducting current to the microwave cavity in the insulating barrier. We demonstrate that this coupling produces sidebands in the microwave cavity resonances of the junction. By measuring the switching current distribution, we show that microwave radiation at sidebands brings the Josephson phase out of equilibrium. In particular, the effective phase temperature is reduced or enhanced through anti-Stokes and Stokes scattering, respectively. Phase cooling and heating both increase with microwave power.
A crossover at a temperature T* in the temperature dependence of the width s of the distribution of switching currents of moderately damped Josephson junctions has been reported in a number of recent publications, with positive ds/dT and IV characteristics associated with underdamped behaviour for lower temperatures T<T*, and negative ds/dT and IV characteristics resembling overdamped behaviour for higher temperatures T>T*. We have investigated in detail the behaviour of Josephson junctions around the temperature T* by using Monte Carlo simulations including retrapping from the running state i…
We investigated macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_y$ intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) with two device structures. One is a nanometer-thick small mesa structure with only two or three IJJs and the other is a stack of a few hundreds of IJJs on a narrow bridge structure. Experimental results of switching current distribution for the first switching events from zero-voltage state showed a good agreement with the conventional theory for a single Josephson junction, indicating that a crossover temperature from thermal activation to MQT regime for the former device str…
We present a study of the first and second switches (SWs) with nearly identical switching current $I_{\rm SW}$ in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_{0.85}$Y$_{0.15}$Cu$_2$O$_y$ intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs). In contrast to early studies where a large difference between $I_{\rm SW}^{\rm 1st}$ and $I_{\rm SW}^{\rm 2nd}$ was observed, a crossover temperature $T_{\rm cr}$ to the quantum phase escapes for the 2nd SW is strongly reduced $(\sim$2.8~K) and agrees with that for the 1st SW. This confirms that the anomalous enhancement of $T_{\rm cr}^{\rm 2nd}$, commonly observed in the IJJs with $I_{\rm SW}^{\rm 1…
We study the optimal design of switching measurements of small Josephson junction circuits which operate in the macroscopic quantum tunnelling regime. Starting from the D-optimality criterion we derive the optimal design for the estimation of the unknown parameters of the underlying Gumbel type distribution. As a practical method for the measurements, we propose a sequential design that combines heuristic search for initial estimates and maximum likelihood estimation. The presented design has immediate applications in the area of superconducting electronics implying faster data acquisition. Th…
