The eclipsing and double-lined spectroscopic binary system V453 Cygni consists of two early B-type stars, one of which is nearing the terminal age main sequence and one which is roughly halfway through its main sequence lifetime. Accurate measurements of the masses and radii of the two stars are available, which makes a detailed abundance analysis both more interesting and more precise than for isolated stars. We have reconstructed the spectra of the individual components of V453 Cyg from the observed composite spectra using the technique of spectral disentangling. From these disentangled spectra we have obtained improved effective temperature measurements of 27900 +/- 400 K and 26200 +/- 500 K, for the primary and secondary stars respectively, by fitting non-LTE theoretical line profiles to the hydrogen Balmer lines. Armed with these high-precision effective temperatures and the accurately known surface gravities of the stars we have obtained the abundances of helium and metallic elements. A detailed abundance analysis of the primary star shows a normal (solar) helium abundance if the microturbulence velocity derived from metallic lines is used. The elemental abundances show no indication that CNO-processed material is present in the photosphere of this high-mass terminal age main sequence star. The elemental abundances of the secondary star were derived by differential study against a template spectrum of a star with similar characteristics. Both the primary and secondary components display elemental abundances which are in the ranges observed in the Galactic OB stars.
EM Cygni is a Z Cam-subtype eclipsing dwarf nova. Its orbital period variations were reported in the past but the results were in conflict to each other while other studies allowed the possibility of no period variation. In this study we report accurate new times of minima of this eclipsing binary and update its O-C diagram. We also estimate the mass transfer rate in EM Cygni system and conclude that the mass transfer is far from the critical value. The mass transfer rate determined from the eclipse timings is in agreement with the spectroscopically determined value.
New photometric solutions have been carried out on the important eccentric eclipsing system V380 Cygni (B1.5II-III + B2V) from UBV differential photoelectric photometry obtained by us. The photometric elements obtained from the analysis of the light curves have been combined with the spectroscopic solution recently published by Popper & Guinan and have led to the physical properties of the system components. The effective temperature of the stars has been determined by fitting IUE UV spectrophotometry to Kurucz model atmospheres and compared with other determinations from broad-band and interm…
In the last decade, over 7000 eclipsing binaries have been discovered in the Local Group through various variability surveys. Measuring fundamental parameters of these eclipsing binaries has become feasible with 8 meter class telescopes, making it possible to use eclipsing binaries as distance indicators. Distances with eclipsing binaries provide an independent method for calibrating the extragalactic distance scale and thus determining the Hubble constant. This method has been used for determining distances to eclipsing binaries in the Magellanic Clouds and the Andromeda Galaxy and most recen…
(Abridged) We present spectroscopic and photometric observations of the eclipsing system V1061 Cyg (P = 2.35 days). We show that it is a hierarchical triple in which the third star is visible in the spectra. We combine the radial velocities for the three stars, times of eclipse, and intermediate astrometric data from the HIPPARCOS mission (abscissa residuals) to establish the elements of the outer orbit (P = 15.8 yr) and accurate values for the masses and radii (1-2% errors) and the effective temperatures of the binary components. Both stars are rotating rapidly and have their rotation synchro…
We present 13 new ASAS eclipsing binaries that exhibit additional periodic variability due to pulsations, eclipses with another period or spots. All contact and semi-detached binaries from the ASAS Catalogue were investigated.
We review the results of our analysis of the OGLE LMC eclipsing binaries (Mazeh, Tamuz & North 2006), using EBAS -- Eclipsing Binary Automated Solver, an automated algorithm to fit lightcurves of eclipsing binaries (Tamuz, Mazeh & North 2006). After being corrected for observational selection effects, the set of detected eclipsing binaries yielded the period distribution and the frequency of all LMC short-period binaries, and not just the eclipsing systems. Somewhat surprisingly, the period distribution is consistent with a flat distribution in log P between 2 and 10 days. The total number of …
Because of GAIA's estimated harvest of cca. 10^5 eclipsing binaries (Munari et al. 2001) automative procedures for extracting physical parameters from observations must be introduced. We present preliminary results of automative scripting applied to 5 eclipsing binaries, for which photometric and radial velocity observations were taken from literature. Although the results are encouraging, extensive testing on a wider sample has to be performed.
The fundamental properties of detached eclipsing binary stars can be measured very accurately, which could make them important objects for constraining the treatment of convection in theoretical stellar models. However, only four or five pieces of information can be found for the average system, which is not enough. We discuss studies of more interesting and useful objects: eclipsing binaries in clusters and eclipsing binaries with pulsating components.
A list of 50 bright Detached Eclipsing Binaries proposed for precise parallax measurements for the FAME is presented. The eclipsing binaries, with precise distances and with photometric and double-line spectroscopic orbits determined, are essential for a full calibration of relations that could be used for very precise distance determination of globular clusters, LMC, SMC, and perhaps also M31 and M33.
The parallaxes determined by Lacy (1979) by means of eclipsing binaries method are compared with the Hipparcos parallaxes for 19 systems. The residual scatter of the distance moduli inferred from eclipsing binaries method - after allowing for known errors as given by Lacy and Hipparcos - is equal to 0.18 mag. It decreases to 0.08 mag when obviously not fitting semi-detached systems and systems with chromospheric activity of components are removed from the sample.
Extensive monitoring of the central part of Omega Cen has lead to the discovery of 12 eclipsing binaries and 9 SX~Phe stars. We report also finding 6 contact binaries in the field of 47~Tuc.
Detached eclipsing binaries are very useful objects for calibrating theoretical stellar models and checking their predictions. Detached eclipsing binaries in open clusters are particularly important because of the additional constraints on their age and chemical composition from their membership of the cluster. I compile a list containing absolute parameters of well-studied eclipsing binaries in open clusters, and present new observational data on the B-type systems V1481 Cyg and V2263 Cyg which are members of the young open cluster NGC 7128.
This paper contains the list of Hipparcos eclipsing binaries that fulfill the following conditions: the star is classified in the Hipparcos Catalogue as EA-type eclipsing binary and its parallax is either larger than 5 mas or it is five times larger than its mean error. An eclipsing binary with known distance and with photometric and double-line spectroscopic orbits determined can be used in the process of calibrating the relation between the stellar surface brightness and the color that is crucial for the method of the distance determination by means of eclipsing binaries. This list is being …
In the first paper of this series we presented EBAS, a new fully automated algorithm to analyse the lightcurves of eclipsing binaries, based on the EBOP code. Here we apply the new algorithm to the whole sample of 2580 binaries found in the OGLE LMC photometric survey and derive the orbital elements for 1931 systems. To obtain the statistical properties of the short-period binaries of the LMC we construct a well defined subsample of 938 eclipsing binaries with main-sequence B-type primaries. Correcting for observational selection effects, we derive the distributions of the fractional radii of …
The orbits and physical parameters of three detached, double-lined A-F eclipsing binaries have been derived combining H_P, V_T, B_T photometry from the Hipparcos/Tycho mission with 8500-8750 Ang ground-based spectroscopy, mimicking the photometric+spectroscopic observations that should be obtained by GAIA, the approved Cornerstone 6 mission by ESA. This study has two main objectives, namely (a) to derive reasonable orbits for a number of new eclipsing binaries and (b) to evaluate the expected performances by GAIA on eclipsing binaries and the accuracy achievable on the determination of fundame…
In this work we present a system for the automatic classification of the light curves of eclipsing binaries. This system is based on a classification scheme that aims to separate eclipsing binary sistems according to their geometrical configuration in a modified version of the traditional classification scheme. The classification is performed by a Bayesian ensemble of neural networks trained with {\em Hipparcos} data of seven different categories including eccentric binary systems and two types of pulsating light curve morphologies.
Four eclipsing binaries, which show apparent changes of period, have been studied with respect to a possible presence of the light time effect. With a least squares method we calculated new light elements of these systems, the mass function of the predicted third body, and its minimum mass. We discuss the probability of the presence of such bodies in terms of mass function, changes in radial velocity and third light in solution of light curves.
Eclipsing binaries are extremely attractive objects because absolute physical parameters (masses, luminosities, radii) of both components may be determined from observations. Since most efforts to extract these parameters were based on dedicated observing programs, existing modeling code is based on interactivity. Gaia will make a revolutionary advance in shear number of observed eclipsing binaries and new methods for automatic handling must be introduced and thoroughly tested. This paper focuses on Nelder & Mead's downhill simplex method applied to a synthetically created test binary as it wi…
I present a review of recent observational work on Cepheid variables and eclipsing binaries in our Galaxy, the Magellanic Clouds, and other members of the Local Group.
As a result of the search among about 11 000 stars from the public ASAS-3 database, we report detection of pulsating components in eleven eclipsing binaries. In particular, we have found three classical Algols, MX Pav, IZ Tel, and VY Mic, with $δ$ Sct-type primary components. In six other eclipsing binaries, the short-period variability can also be interpreted in terms of $δ$ Sct-type pulsations, but in these systems both components are probably main-sequence stars. In HD 99612, the pulsation mode shows significant amplitude decrease during the time interval covered by observations. In additio…
We obtained BV time series photometry for 12 variable stars from the field of the old open cluster NGC 2243. The sample includes 3 newly identified detached/semi-detached binaries. There are now four detached eclipsing binaries which are likely members of the cluster. Determination of the absolute parameters of the components would provide a valuable check on evolutionary models of low-mass stars. An accurate ephemeris and orbital period analysis are presented for the previously-known detached binary NV CMa. We also provide ephemerides for 7 other periodic variables. We show that 3 contact bin…
Detached eclipsing binary stars provide a robust one-step distance determination to nearby galaxies. As a by-product of Galactic microlensing searches, catalogs of thousands of variable stars including eclipsing binaries have been produced by the OGLE, MACHO and EROS collaborations. We present photometric solutions for detached eclipsing binaries in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) discovered by the OGLE collaboration. The solutions were obtained with an automated version of the Wilson-Devinney program. By fitting mock catalogs of eclipsing binaries we find that the normalized stellar radii (p…
Interstellar and atmospheric extinctions redden the observational photometric data and they should be handled rigorously. This paper simulates the effect of reddening for the modest case of two main sequence T1 = 6500K and T2 = 5500K components of a detached eclipsing binary system. It is shown that simply subtracting a constant from measured magnitudes (the approach often used in the field of eclipsing binaries) to account for reddening should be avoided. Simplified treatment of the reddening introduces systematics that reaches \~0.01mag for the simulated case, but can be as high as ~0.2mag f…
We combine the catalogue of eclipsing binaries from the All Sky Automated Survey (ASAS) with the ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS). The combination results in 836 eclipsing binaries that display coronal activity and is the largest sample of active binary stars assembled to date. By using the (V-I) colors of the ASAS eclipsing binary catalogue, we are able to determine the distances and thus bolometric luminosities for the majority of eclipsing binaries that display significant stellar activity. A typical value for the ratio of soft X-ray to bolometric luminosity is L_X/L_bol ~ a few x 10^-4, similar…
Years to decade-long cyclic orbital period changes have been observed in several classes of close binary systems including Algols, W Ursae Majoris and RS Canum Venaticorum systems, and the cataclysmic variables. The origin of these changes is unknown, but mass loss, apsidal motion, magnetic activity, and the presence of a third body have all been proposed. In this paper we use new CCD observations and the century-long historical record of the times of primary eclipse for WW Cygni to explore the cause of these period changes. WW Cygni is an Algol binary whose orbital period undergoes a 56 year …
Three Algol-type binaries in Cygnus constellation were selected for an analysis from a huge database of observations made by the INTEGRAL/OMC camera. These data were processed and analyzed, resulting in a first light-curve study of these neglected eclipsing binaries. The temperatures of the primary components range from 9500 K to 10500 K and the inclinations are circa 73deg (for PV Cyg and V1011 Cyg), while almost 90deg for V822 Cyg. All of them seem to be main-sequence stars, well within their critical Roche lobes. Nevertheless, further detailed analyses are still needed.
Double-lined spectroscopic binaries which are also eclipsing provide the most accurate stellar data, and are consequently of first importance to improve stellar evolution modelling. While the mass and radius of each component of detached eclipsing binaries (EBs) can be accurately known, their temperature Teff and chemical composition ([Fe/H]) are still uncertain. To contribute to overcome these difficulties, we present metallicity-dependent Teff determinations of 11 EBs (22 individual stars) from Stromgren synthetic photometry. Inconsistencies suggesting new photometric observations are discus…
General importance and capabilities of observations of eclipsing binaries by the forthcoming ESA mission GAIA are discussed. Availability of spectroscopic observations and a large number of photometric bands on board will make it possible to reliably determine physical parameters for $\sim 10^5$ binary stars. It is stressed that current methods of object by object analysis will have to be modified and included in an automatic analysis pipeline.
I present light curves for two detached eclipsing binary stars in the region of the LMC cluster NGC 1850, which is possibly a young globular cluster still in formation. One, a likely spectral type O star, is a newly detected eclipsing binary in the region of the very young subcluster NGC 1850A. This binary is among a small number of highly massive O-type stars in binary systems found in LMC clusters. These two eclipsing binaries are the first discovered in the well studied NGC 1850, and the O-type star is the first eclisping binary found in NGC 1850A. Light curves for two NGC 1850 region Cephe…
ASAS is a long term project to monitor bright variable stars over the whole sky. It has discovered 50,122 variables brighter than V < 14 mag south of declination +28 degrees, and among them 11,099 eclipsing binaries. We present a preliminary analysis of 5,384 contact, 2,957 semi-detached, and 2,758 detached systems. The statistics of the distribution provides a qualitative confirmation of decades old idea of Flannery and Lucy that W UMa type binaries evolve through a series of relaxation oscillations: ASAS finds comparable number of contact and semidetached systems. The most surprising result …
Using a comprehensive binary population synthesis scheme, we investigate the statistical properties of a sample of eclipsing binaries that is detectable by an idealised extrasolar planet transit survey with specifications broadly similar to those of the SuperWASP (Wide Angle Search for Planets) project. In this idealised survey the total number of detectable single stars in the Galactic disc is of the order of 10^6-10^7, while, for a flat initial mass ratio distribution, the total number of detectable eclipsing binaries is of the order of 10^4-10^5. The majority of the population of detectable…
Full tests to stellar models below 1 Msun have been hindered until now by the scarce number of precise measurements of the stars' most fundamental parameters: their masses and radii. With the current observational techniques, the required precision to distinguish between different models (errors < 2-3 %) can only be achieved using detached eclipsing binaries where 1) both stars are similar in mass, i.e. q = M1/M2 ~ 1.0, and 2) each star is a main sequence object below 1 Msun. Until 2003 only three such binaries had been found and analyzed in detail. Two new systems were published in 2005 (Cree…
We have analysed publicly available MACHO observations of 6833 variable stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, classified as eclipsing binaries. After finding that a significant fraction of the sample was misclassified, we redetermined periods and variability class for all stars, producing a clean sample of 3031 eclipsing binaries. We have investigated their distribution in the period-color-luminosity space, which was used, for example, to assign a foreground probability to every object and establish new period-luminosity relations to selected types of eclipsing stars. We found that the orbital …
The period changes of six eclipsing binaries have been studied with focus on the light-time effect. With the least squares method we also calculated parameters of such an effect and properties of the unresolved body in these systems. With these results we discussed the probability of presence of such bodies in the systems with respect to possible confirmation by another method. In two systems we also suggested the hypothesis of fourth body or magnetic activity for explanation of the "second-order variability" after subtraction of the light-time effect of the third body.
Detached eclipsing double line spectroscopic binaries offer an opportunity to measure directly stellar parameters: mass, luminosity, radius, as well as the distance. The only non-trivial step is the need to determine surface brightness of each component on the basis of something measurable, like the color or the line ratios. Modern model atmospheres provide a fairly good calibration of that relation, but empirical verification is possible, and it is needed to achieve the highest accuracy. When this approach is fully developed the detached eclipsing binaries should provide direct (single step) …
Detached eclipsing double line spectroscopic binaries are accurate distance indicators. They can be used for the direct determination of distances to globular clusters in which such systems can be identified. The results of major photometric surveys aimed at identification of variable stars in omega Cen are summarized. Over 43 eclipsing binaries have been identified so far in the cluster field of which only 8 objects are true detached systems. Distance and age determinations are presented for the system OGLEGC-17. The apparent distance modulus is (m-M)_{V}=14.09\pm 0.04 and the age of this bin…
Eclipsing binaries offer a unique opportunity to determine fundamental physical parameters of stars using the constraints on the geometry of the systems. Here we present a reanalysis of publicly available two-color observations of about 6800 stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, obtained by the MACHO project between 1992 and 2000 and classified as eclipsing variable stars. Of these, less than half are genuine eclipsing binaries. We determined new periods and classified the stars, 3031 in total, using the Fourier parameters of the phased light curves. The period distribution is clearly bimodal, …
We present a preliminary statistical analysis of a period change of eclipsing binaries from the ASAS Catalog of Variable Stars. For each contact and semidetached system brighter than 13.3$mag$ (in V) with a period shorter than 0.4 days and at least 300 observation points we have found an angular velocity $ω$ and its time derivative $\frac{dω}{dt}$. According to our accuracy there is no evidence that average $\frac{dω}{dt}$ differs from 0. Light curves for selected stars are presented.
PHOEBE (PHysics Of Eclipsing BinariEs) is a modeling package for eclipsing binary stars, built on top of the widely used WD program (Wilson & Devinney 1971). This introductory paper overviews most important scientific extensions (incorporating observational spectra of eclipsing binaries into the solution-seeking process, extracting individual temperatures from observed color indices, main-sequence constraining and proper treatment of the reddening), numerical innovations (suggested improvements to WD's Differential Corrections method, the new Nelder & Mead's downhill Simplex method) and techni…
The expected performance of GAIA satellite on eclipsing binaries is reviewed on the basis of (a) combined Hipparcos and ground-based observations mimicking GAIA data harvest, and (b) accurate simulations using the latest instrument model. It is found that for a large majority of the 16000 SB2 eclipsing binaries that GAIA will discover at magnitudes V<13, the orbital solutions and physical parameters will be derived with formal accuracies better than 2%. For the same stars the GAIA parallax errors will be about 5 micro-arcsec, i.e. an error of 0.5% at 1 kpc, which will allow to iteratively refi…
GAIA observations of eclipsing binary stars will have a large impact on stellar astrophysics. Accurate parameters, including absolute masses and sizes will be derived for $\sim 10^4$ systems, orders of magnitude more than what has ever been done from the ground. Observations of 18 real systems in the GAIA-like mode as well as with devoted ground-based campaigns are used to assess binary recognition techniques, orbital period determination, accuracy of derived fundamental parameters and the need to automate the whole reduction and interpretation process.
We identify SDSS011009.09+132616.1, SDSS030308.35+005444.1, SDSS143547.87+373338.5 and SDSS154846.00+405728.8 as four eclipsing white dwarf plus main sequence (WDMS) binaries from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and report on follow-up observations of these systems. Orbital periods and ephemerides have been established from multi-season photometry. SDSS1435+3733, with Porb=3h has the shortest orbital period of all known eclipsing WDMS binaries. Time-resolved spectroscopic observations have been obtained and the radial velocities of the secondary stars in all four systems were measured. A spectra…
We show how the assumption of coeval formation can be used to constrain the effective temperatures of the components of young eclipsing double-lined spectroscopic binaries. Our method extends the approach of White et al. (1999) to a two-step analysis. The first step compares evolutionary models to the observed masses and radii and selects those models that predict ages that are consistent with coeval formation. The second step then uses these models to constrain the effective temperatures. We applied the method on literature values of the stellar parameters of the eclipsing binaries RX J0529.4…
We study the radial-velocity and light curves of the two eclipsing binaries EE Aqr and Z Vul. Using the latest version of the Wilson & Van Hamme (2003) model, absolute parameters for the systems are determined. We find that EE Aqr and Z Vul are near-contact and semi-detached systems, respectively. The primary component of EE Aqr fills about 96% of its 'Roche lobe', while its secondary one appears close to completely filling this limiting volume. In a similar way, we find fill-out proportions of about 72 and 100% of these volumes for the primary and secondary components of Z Vul respectively. W…
We present 31 bright eclipsing contact and semi-detached binaries that showed high period change rates in a 5 year interval in observations by the All-Sky Automated Survey (ASAS). The time-scales of these changes range from only 50 up to 400 kyr. The orbital periods of 10 binaries are increasing and of 21 are decreasing, and even a larger excess is seen in contact binaries, where the numbers are 5 and 17, respectively. Period change has previously been noticed for only two of these binaries; our observations confirmed a secular period drift for SV Cen and period oscillations for VY Cet. The sp…
We have conducted a programme to determine the fundamental parameters of a substantial number of eclipsing binaries of spectral types O and B in the Small Magellanic Cloud. New spectroscopic data, obtained with the two-degree-field multi-object spectrograph on the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope, have been used in conjunction with photometry from the Optical Gravitational Lens Experiment (OGLE-II) database of SMC eclipsing binaries. Previously we reported results for 10 systems; in this second and concluding paper we present spectral types, masses, radii, temperatures, surface gravities and l…
We undertook a long term project, DIRECT, to obtain the direct distances to two important galaxies in the cosmological distance ladder -- M31 and M33, using detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs) and Cepheids. While rare and difficult to detect, detached eclipsing binaries provide us with the potential to determine these distances with an accuracy better than 5%. The massive photometry obtained in order to detect DEBs provides us with good light curves for the Cepheid variables. These are essential to the parallel project to derive direct Baade-Wesselink distances to Cepheids in M31 and M33. For b…

We present the first results of an observational programme to measure the fundamental parameters of over 100 eclipsing binaries in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The spectroscopic data were obtained by using the 2dF multi-object spectrograph on the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope, and are used in conjunction with photometry from the OGLE database of SMC eclipsing binaries. Ten systems are discussed in this first paper. Three are detached early-B binaries, six are in a semi-detached configuration, and one is in a marginal contact state. We conclude that the semi-detached systems are undergo…
The 222~000 I-band light curves of variable stars detected by the OGLE-II survey in the direction of the Galactic Bulge have been searched for eclipsing binaries (EBs). A previously developed code to analyze lightcurve shapes and identify long period variables (LPVs) has been adapted to identify EBs. The parameters in the modified code have been optimised to recover a list of about 140 detached EBs in the Small Magellanic Cloud previously identified in the literature as particularly well suited for distance estimates (and wich have periods \more 0.85 days). The power of the code is demonstrate…
The DIRECT project aims to determine direct distances to two important galaxies in the cosmological distance ladder - M31 and M33 - using detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs) and Cepheids. We present the results of the first large-scale CCD-based search for variables in M33. We have observed two fields located in the central region of M33 for a total of 95 nights on the F. L. Whipple Observatory 1.2-m telescope and 36 nights on the Michigan-Dartmouth-MIT 1.3-m telescope. We have found a total of 544 variables, including 251 Cepheids and 47 eclipsing binaries. The catalog of variables is availabl…
Accurate physical parameters have been determined for two early-type detached eclipsing binaries in the open cluster h Persei (NGC 869). Masses accurate to 1.5% are derived from high-resolution spectroscopy and radii accurate to 4--6% have been obtained from fitting the existing light curves. The four stars are placed in the mass radius plane and compared to the theoretical stellar models of the Granada Group. The best-fitting models have a low metallicity of approximately Z=0.01 and a high helium abundance of Y=0.34. This is the first determination of the bulk metallicity of the Perseus Doubl…
The orbits and physical parameters of three close, double-lined G0 eclipsing binaries have been derived combining H_P, V_T, B_T photometry from the Hipparcos/Tycho mission with 8480-8740 Åground-based spectroscopy. The setup is mimicking the photometric and spectroscopic observations that should be obtained by GAIA. The binaries considered here are all of G0 spectral type, but each with its own complications: V781 Tau is an overcontact system with components of unequal temperature, UV Leo shows occasional surface spots and GK Dra contains a delta-Scuti variable. Such peculiarities will be comm…
The orbits and physical parameters of three detached F and G-type eclipsing binaries have been derived combining Hipparcos H(P) photometry with 8480-8740 Ang ground-based spectroscopy, simulating the photometric+spectroscopic observations that the GAIA mission will obtain. Tycho B(T) and V(T) light curves are too noisy to be modeled for the three targets, and only mean Tycho colors are retained to constrain the temperature. No previous combined photometric+spectroscopic solution exists in literature for any of the three targets. Quite remarkably, CN Lyn turned out to be an equal masses F5 trip…
Accurate masses and, in general, all fundamental parameters of distant stars can only be measured in eclipsing binaries. Several massive star candidates with masses near 200 Mo exist, however they have large uncertainties associated with them. The most massive binary ever measured accurately is WR 20a, for which we present the light curve. Measuring the period and inclination, we derive masses greater than 80 Mo for each component. Massive binaries are bound to exist in Local Group galaxies, such as M31 and M33. These can be selected from their light curves, obtained by variability studies, su…
A sample of 33 eclipsing binaries observed in a field of the SMC with FLAMES@VLT is presented. The radial velocity curves obtained, together with existing OGLE light curves, allowed the determination of all stellar and orbital parameters of these binary systems. The mean distance modulus of the observed part of the SMC is 19.05, based on the 26 most reliable systems. Assuming an average error of 0.1 mag on the distance modulus to an individual system, and a gaussian distribution of the distance moduli, we obtain a 2-sigma depth of 0.36 mag or 10.6 kpc. Some results on the kinematics of the bin…
We examine the evolution of low-mass star and brown dwarf eclipsing binaries. These objects are rapid rotators and are believed to shelter large magnetic fields. We suggest that reduced convective efficiency, due to fast rotation and large field strengths, and/or to magnetic spot coverage of the radiating surface significantly affect their evolution, leading to a reduced heat flux and thus larger radii and cooler effective temperatures than for regular objects. We have considered such processes in our evolutionary calculations, using a phenomenological approach. This yields mass-radius and eff…
Individual components of well-detached binary systems are assumed to be two single-like stars with a common origin, i.e. they share the same chemical composition and same age. Therefore, one expects to fit the observed parameters of both components with a single isochrone at the same metallicity. We show that serious problems appear for systems with accurate fundamental data (eclipsing binaries in the field and in the Hyades, and a visual binary) in the 0.7-1.1 Msun mass range. We discuss and briefly review the results obtained so far on these objects. Finally, in an attempt to solve this prob…
This is the first step in a project to combine studies of eclipsing binaries and oscillating stars to probe the interior of Blue Stragglers (BS). This may imply a way to discriminate observationally between different birth mechanisms of BS stars. We study the open cluster NGC2506 which contains oscillating BS stars and detached eclipsing binaries for which accurate parameters can be derived. This will tightly constrain the cluster isochrone and provide an absolute mass, radius and luminosity-scale for the cluster stars along with the cluster age, metallicity and distance. The present work focu…
