Structural study on the photo-switching system Pr{0.55}(Ca{1-y}Sr y){0.45}MnO3 thin films on perovskite (011) substrate has been made with synchrotron radiation diffraction experiment. The insulating phase of y=0.20 sample was found to be an antiferro-orbital ordered phase with large lattice distortion and the ferromagnetic metallic phase of y=0.40 film show no distinct lattice distortion from the paramagnetic phase, which are very similar with (Nd,Pr)0.5Sr0.5MnO3 films. A striking contrast of the orbital ordered phase of y=0.20 film to (Nd,Pr)0.5Sr0.5MnO3 films was its untwinned structure.
Transition metal oxides are promising candidates for thermoelectric applications, because they are stable at high temperature and because strong electronic correlations can generate large Seebeck coefficients, but their thermoelectric power factors are limited by the low electrical conductivity. We report transport measurements on Ca3Co4O9 films on various perovskite substrates and show that reversible incorporation of oxygen into SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 substrates activates a parallel conduction channel for p-type carriers, greatly enhancing the thermoelectric performance of the film-substrate syst…
Electronic transport has been investigated for strong spin-orbit coupled perovskite SrIrO3 thin films grown at various substrate temperatures. The electronic transport of the SrIrO3 films is found to be very sensitive to the growth parameters; in particular, the film can either be a metal or an insulator depending upon the substrate growth temperature. While all the metallic films show unusual sublinear temperature dependent non-Fermi liquid behaviors in resistivity, the insulating film grown at a higher temperature stands out for its inhomogeneous Ir distribution, as analyzed by secondary ion…
We have investigated the electronic structure of meta-stable perovskite Ca1-xSrxIrO3 (x = 0, 0.5, and 1) thin films using transport measurements, optical spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations. We artificially fabricated the perovskite phase of Ca1-xSrxIrO3, which has a hexagonal or post perovskite crystal structure in bulk form, by growing epitaxial thin films on perovskite GdScO3 substrates using epi-stabilization technique. The transport properties of the perovskite Ca1-xSrxIrO3 films systematically changed from nearly insulating (or semi-metallic) for x = 0 to bad metallic for x =…
The control of matter properties (transport, magnetic, dielectric,...) using synthesis as thin films is strongly hindered by the lack of reliable theories, able to guide the design of new systems, through the understanding of the interface effects and of the way the substrate constraints are imposed to the material. The present paper analyses the energetic contributions at the interfaces, and proposes a model describing the microscopic mechanisms governing the interactions at an epitaxial interface between a manganite and another transition metal oxide in perovskite structure (as for instance …
We have investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of perovskite SrRu1-xIrxO3 thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition on atomically-flat (001) SrTiO3 substrates. SrRuO3 has the properties of a ferromagnetic metal with Curie temperature 150 K. Substituting Ir for Ru in SrRuO3, films showed fully-metallic behavior and ferromagnetic ordering, although resistivity increased and the ferromagnetic TC decreased. Films with x = 0.25 underwent the metal-to-insulator transition at 75 K, and spin-glass-like ordering at 45 K with the elimination of ferromagnetic long-range ordering caused by …
We investigate the effects of compressive strain on the electrical resistivity of 5d iridium based perovskite SrIrO3 by depositing epitaxial films of thickness 35 nm on various substrates such as GdScO3 (110), DyScO3 (110), and SrTiO3 (001). Surprisingly, we find anomalous transport behaviors in the tempeature dependent resistivity, where the temperature exponent evolves continuously from 4/5 to 1 and to 3/2 with an increase of compressive strain. Furthermore, magnetoresistance always remains positive irrespective of resistivity upturns at low temperatures. These observations imply that the de…
5d transition-metal-based oxides display emergent phenomena due to the competition between the relevant energy scales of the correlation, bandwidth, and most importantly, the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Starting from the prediction of novel oxide topological insulators in bilayer ABO3 (B = 5d elements) thin-film grown along the (111) direction, 5d-based perovskites (Pv) form a new paradigm in the thin-film community. Here, we reviewed the scientific accomplishments in Pv-SrIrO3 thin films, a popular candidate for observing non-trivial topological phenomena. Although the predicted topolog…
Motivated by the goal of realizing topological phases in thin films and heterostructures of correlated oxides, we propose here a quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI) in ultrathin films of double perovskites based on mixed 3d-5d or 3d-4d transition metal ions, grown along the [111] direction. Considering the specific case of ultrathin Ba2FeReO6, we present a theoretical analysis of an effective Hamiltonian derived from first-principles. We establish that a strong spin-orbit coupling at Re site, t2g symmetry of the low-energy d-bands, polarity of its [111] orientation of perovskite structure,…
High entropy oxides (HEOs) are a class of materials, containing equimolar portions of five or more transition metal and/or rare-earth elements. We report here about the layer-by-layer growth of HEO [(La$_{0.2}$Pr$_{0.2}$Nd$_{0.2}$Sm$_{0.2}$Eu$_{0.2}$)NiO$_3$] thin films on NdGaO$_3$ substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The combined characterizations with in-situ reflection high energy electron diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray diffraction affirm the single crystalline nature of the film with smooth surface morphology. The desired +3 oxidation of Ni has been confirmed by an elem…
In this work multiferroic thin films of Bi containing perovskite oxides are discussed, where the driving force for ferroelectricity are the Bi3+ lone-pair electrons. First, a brief introduction of Bi containing multiferroic perovskite oxides will be presented to describe the mechanisms for establishing magnetic and ferroelectric order in these compounds and some recent developments in this field of research are reported. The second section addresses experimental aspects of epitaxial thin film growth of BiMnO3, (Bi0.9La0.1)2NiMnO6 (BLNMO) and BiFeO3 thin films by pulsed laser deposition. The th…
B-site ordered thin films of double perovskite Sr$_2$CoIrO$_6$ were epitaxially grown by a metal-organic aerosol deposition technique on various substrates, actuating different strain states. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and polarized far-field Raman spectroscopy confirm the strained epitaxial growth on all used substrates. Polarization dependent Co $L_{2,3}$ X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals a change of the magnetic easy axis of the antiferromagnetically ordered (high-spin) Co$^{3+}$ sublattice within the strain series. By reversing the applied strain direction from…
We investigated the nature of transport and magnetic properties in SrIr0.5Ru0.5O3, (SIRO) which has characteristics intermediate between a correlated non-Fermi liquid state and an itinerant Fermi liquid state, by growing perovskite thin films on various substrates (SrTiO3 (001), (LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2TaAlO6)0.7 (001) and LaAlO3 (001)). We observed systematic variation of underlying substrate dependent metal-to-insulator transition temperatures at 80 K on SrTiO3, 90 K on (LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2TaAlO6)0.7 and 100 K on LaAlO3) in resistivity. Resistivity in the metallic region follows a T3/2 power law; whereas …
Understanding of metal insulator transitions in a strongly correlated system, driven by Anderson localization (disorder) and/or Mott localization (correlation), is a long standing problem in condensed matter physics. The prevailing fundamental question would be how these two mechanisms contrive to accomplish emergent anomalous behaviors. Here, we have grown high quality perovskite SrIrO3 thin films, containing a strong spin orbit coupled 5d element Ir, on various substrates such as GdScO3 (110), DyScO3 (110), SrTiO3 (001), and NdGaO3 (110) with increasing lattice mismatch, in order to carry ou…
A multilayer perovskite thin film resistive memory device has been developed comprised of: a Pr0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (PCMO) perovskite oxide epitaxial layer on a YBCO bottom thin film electrode; a thin yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) buffer layer grown on the PCMO layer, and a gold thin film top electrode. The multi-layer thin film lattice structure has been characterized by XRD and TEM analyses showing a high quality heterostructure. I-AFM analysis indicated nano granular conductivity distributed uniformly throughout the PCMO film surface. With the addition of the YSZ buffer layer, the pulse voltage …
We have investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of Co-doped Pr0.8Ca0.2MnO3 thin films using various spectroscopic techniques. X-ray absorption and hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy revealed that the substituted Co ions are in the divalent state, resulting in hole doping on the Mn atoms. Studies of element-selective magnetic properties by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism found a large orbital magnetic moment for the Co ions. These spectroscopic studies reveal that the substituted Co ions play several roles of hole doping for Mn, ferromagnetic superexchange coupling between the …
The first examples of single crystal epitaxial thin films of a high entropy perovskite oxide are synthesized. Pulsed laser deposition is used to grow the configurationally disordered ABO3 perovskite, Ba(Zr0.2Sn0.2Ti0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2)O3, epitaxially on SrTiO3 and MgO substrates. X-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy demonstrate that the films are single phase with excellent crystallinity and atomically abrupt interfaces to the underlying substrates. Atomically-resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy mapping shows a uniform and random distribution of all B-site cations. …
Transition metal perovskite oxides display a variety of emergent phenomena which are tunable by tailoring the oxygen octahedral rotation. SrRuO$_3$, a ferromagnetic perovskite oxide, is well-known to have various atomic structures and octahedral rotations when grown as thin films. However, how the electronic structure changes with the film thickness has been hardly studied. Here, by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and electron diffraction techniques, we study the electronic structure of SrRuO$_3$ thin films as a function of the film thickness. Different reconstructed electronic…
Strong spin-orbit coupled 5d transition metal based ABO3 oxides, especially iridates, allow tuning parameters in the phase diagram and may demonstrate important functionalities, for example, by means of strain effects and symmetry-breaking, because of the interplay between the Coulomb interactions and strong spin-orbit coupling. Here, we have epitaxially stabilized high quality thin films of perovskite (Pv) CaIrO3. Film on the best lattice-matched substrate shows semi-metal-like characteristics. Intriguingly, imposing tensile or compressive strain on the film by altering the underlying lattice…
Perovskite oxides ABO$_3$ containing heavy B-site elements are a class of candidate materials to host topological metals with a large spin-orbit interaction. In contrast to the band insulator BaSnO$_3$, the semimetal BaPbO$_3$ is proposed to be a typical example with an inverted band structure, the conduction band of which is composed of mainly the O-2p orbital. In this study, we exemplify a band-gap modification by systematic structural, optical, and transport measurements in BaSn$_{1-x}$Pb$_x$O$_3$ films. A sudden suppression of the conductivity and an enhancement of the weak antilocalizatio…
Epitaxial strain is a proven route to enhancing the properties of complex oxides, however, the details of how the atomic structure accommodates strain are poorly understood due to the difficulty of measuring the oxygen positions in thin films. We present a general methodology for determining the atomic structure of strained oxide films via x-ray diffraction, which we demonstrate using LaNiO3 films. The oxygen octahedral rotations and distortions have been quantified by comparing the intensities of half-order Bragg peaks, arising from the two unit cell periodicity of the octahedral rotations, w…
We report the direct observation of the electric pulse induced resistance-change (EPIR) effect at the nano scale on La1-xSrxMnO3 (LSMO) thin films by the current measurement AFM technique. After a switching voltage of one polarity is applied across the sample by the AFM tip, the conductivity in a local nanometer region around the AFM tip is increased, and after a switching voltage of the opposite polarity is applied, the local conductivity is reduced. This reversible resistance switching effect is observed under both continuous and short pulse voltage switching conditions. It is important for …
We report on the synthesis and transport properties of perovskite (Pv) CaIrO3 thin films. The Pv phase of CaIrO3 was stabilized by epitaxial growth on SrTiO3, (LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2AlTaO6)0.7, and LaAlO3 substrates with strong tensile, weak tensile, and compressive strains, respectively. The resistivity of these films showed a poorly metallic behavior. The Hall resistivity exhibited a sign change as a function of temperature and a nonlinear magnetic-field dependence, which clearly indicated the coexistence of electrons and holes and hence supported that Pv CaIrO3 films are semimetallic. The observed …
Perovskite SrIrO3 has long been proposed as an exotic semimetal induced by the interplay between the spin-orbit coupling and electron correlations. However, its low-lying electronic structure is still lacking. We synthesize high-quality perovskite SrIrO3 (100) films by means of oxide molecular beam epitaxy, and then systemically investigate their low energy electronic structure using in-situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We find that the hole-like bands around R and the electron-like bands around U(T) intersect the Fermi level simultaneously, providing the direct evidence of the s…
Local configurational disorder can have a dominating role in the formation of macroscopic functional responses in strongly correlated materials. Here, we use entropy-stabilization synthesis to create single crystal epitaxial ABO3 perovskite thin films with equal atomic concentration of 3d transition metal cations on the B-site sublattice. X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy of La(Cr0.2Mn0.2Fe0.2Co0.2Ni0.2)O3 (L5BO) films demonstrate excellent crystallinity, smooth film surfaces, and uniform mixing of the 3d transition metal cations througho…
Structural study of orbital-ordered manganite thin films has been conducted using synchrotron radiation, and a ground state electronic phase diagram is made. The lattice parameters of four manganite thin films, Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 (NSMO) or Pr0.5Sr0.5MnO3 (PSMO) on (011) surfaces of SrTiO3 (STO) or [(LaAlO3){0.3}(SrAl0.5Ta0.5O3){0.7}] (LSAT), were measured as a function of temperature. The result shows, as expected based on previous knowledge of bulk materials, that the films' resistivity is closely related to their structures. Observed superlattice reflections indicate that NSMO thin films have an…
We have synthesized and characterized laser-deposited film samples of perovskite BaCrO_{3}, a missing member of the perovskite-chromate family. The BaCrO_{3} films have a substantially larger lattice constant than other chromates, are insulating, and exhibit weak ferromagnetism likely associated with canted antiferromagnetism. Comparison with the other sister compounds CaCrO_{3} and SrCrO_{3} suggest an anomalous Mott transition where magnetism is independent of whether the compound is metallic or insulating
We report the relationship between epitaxial strain and the crystallographic orientation of the in-phase rotation axis and A-site displacements in Pbnm-type perovskite films. Synchrotron diffraction measurements of EuFeO3 films under strain states ranging from 2% compressive to 0.9% tensile on cubic or rhombohedral substrates exhibit a combination of a-a+c- and a+a-c- rotational patterns. We compare the EuFeO3 behavior with previously reported experimental and theoretical work on strained Pbnm-type films on non-orthorhombic substrates, as well as additional measurements from LaGaO3, LaFeO3, an…
Anionic ordering is a promising route to engineer physical properties in functional heteroanionic materials. A central challenge in the study of anion-ordered compounds lies in developing robust synthetic strategies to control anion occupation and in understanding the resultant implications for electronic structure. Here, we show that epitaxial strain induces preferential occupation of F and O on the anion sites in perovskite oxyfluoride SrMnO2.5-dFg films grown on different substrates. Under compressive strain, F tends to take the apical-like sites, which was revealed by F and O K-edge linear…
The rich phase diagram of bulk Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_3$ resulting in a high tunability of physical properties gave rise to various studies related to fundamental research as well as prospective applications of the material. Importantly, as a consequence of strong correlation effects, electronic and lattice degrees of freedom are vigorously coupled. Hence, it is debatable whether such bulk phase diagrams can be transferred to inherently strained epitaxial thin films. In this paper, the structural orthorhombic to pseudo-cubic transition for $x=0.1$ is studied in ion-beam sputtered thin films an…
Magnetism and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) are two quintessential ingredients underlying novel topological transport phenomena in itinerant ferromagnets. When spin-polarized bands support nodal points/lines with band degeneracy that can be lifted by SOC, the nodal structures become a source of Berry curvature; this leads to a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE). Contrary to three-dimensional systems that naturally host nodal points/lines, two-dimensional (2D) systems can possess stable nodal structures only when proper crystalline symmetry exists. Here we show that 2D spin-polarized band structures…
We present an interacting model for the electronic and magnetic behavior of a strained $(001)$ atomic layer of Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6,$ which shows room-temperature ferrimagnetism and magnetoresistance with potential spintronics application in the bulk. We find that the strong spin-orbit coupling in the molybdenum 4$d$ shell gives rise to a robust ferrimagnetic state with an emergent spin-polarized electronic structure consisting of flat bands and four massive or massless Dirac dispersions. Based on the spin-wave theory, we demonstrate that the magnetic order remains intact for a wide range of doping,…
We have measured the temperature dependence of the direct band gap, $E_g$, in SrTi$^{16}$O$_3$ and BaTiO$_3$ and related materials with quantum-paraelectric and ferroelectric properties using optical spectroscopy. We show that $E_g$ exhibits an anomalous temperature dependence with pronounced changes in the vicinity of the ferroelectric transition that can be accounted for in terms of the Fröhlich electron-phonon interaction with an optical phonon mode, the so-called soft mode. We demonstrate that these characteristic changes of $E_g$ can be readily detected even in very thin films of SrTi$^{1…
We prepared high epitaxial thin films of the compound Sr_2FeMoO_6 with narrow rocking curves by pulsed laser deposition. The diagonal and nondiagonal elements of the resistivity tensor were investigated at temperatures from 4 K up to room temperature in magnetic fields up to 8 T. An electronlike ordinary Hall effect and a holelike anomalous Hall contribution are observed. Both coefficients have reversed sign compared to the colossal magnetoresistive manganites. We found at 300 K an ordinary Hall coefficent of -1.87x10^{-10} m^3/As, corresponding to a nominal charge carrier density of four elec…
We report the observation that thermoelectric thin-films of La-doped SrTiO3 grown on SrTiO3 substrates yield anomalously high values of thermopower to give extraordinary values of power factor at 300K. Thin-films of Sr0.98La0.02TiO3, grown via pulsed laser deposition at low temperature and low pressure (450C, 10-7Torr), do not yield similarly high values when grown on other substrates. The thin-film growth induces oxygen reduction in the SrTiO3 crystals, doping the substrate n-type. It is found that the backside resistance of the SrTiO3 substrates is as low (~12ohm/square) as it is on the film…
