The accurate solution of some of the main problems in numerical linear algebra (linear system solving, eigenvalue computation, singular value computation and the least squares problem) for a totally positive Bernstein-Vandermonde matrix is considered. Bernstein-Vandermonde matrices are a generalization of Vandermonde matrices arising when considering for the space of the algebraic polynomials of degree less than or equal to $n$ the Bernstein basis, a widely used basis in Computer Aided Geometric Design, instead of the monomial basis.
Our approach is based on the computation of the bidiagonal factorization of a totally positive Bernstein-Vandermonde matrix (or its inverse) by means of Neville elimination. The explicit expressions obtained for the determinants involved in the process makes the algorithm both fast and accurate.
Bernstein polynomials, long a staple of approximation theory and computational geometry, have also increasingly become of interest in finite element methods. Many fundamental problems in interpolation and approximation give rise to interesting linear algebra questions. When attempting to find a polynomial approximation of boundary or initial data, one encounters the Bernstein-Vandermonde matrix, which is found to be highly ill-conditioned. Previously, we used the relationship between monomial Bezout matrices and the inverse of Hankel matrices to obtain a decomposition of the inverse of the Ber…
We present a method to derive new explicit expressions for bidiagonal decompositions of Vandermonde and related matrices such as the (q-, h-) Bernstein-Vandermonde ones, among others. These results generalize the existing expressions for nonsingular matrices to matrices of arbitrary rank. For totally nonnegative matrices of the above classes, the new decompositions can be computed efficiently and to high relative accuracy componentwise in floating point arithmetic. In turn, matrix computations (e.g., eigenvalue computation) can also be performed efficiently and to high relative accuracy.
We prove explicit lower bounds for the smallest singular value and upper bounds for the condition number of rectangular, multivariate Vandermonde matrices with scattered nodes on the complex unit circle. Analogously to the Shannon-Nyquist criterion, the nodes are assumed to be separated by a constant divided by the used polynomial degree. If this constant grows linearly with the spatial dimension, the condition number is uniformly bounded. If it grows only logarithmically with the spatial dimension, the condition number grows slightly stronger than exponentially with the spatial dimension. Bot…
We prove lower bounds for the smallest singular value of rectangular, multivariate Vandermonde matrices with nodes on the complex unit circle. The nodes are ``off the grid'', groups of nodes cluster, and the studied minimal singular value is bounded below by the product of inverted distances of a node to all other nodes in the specific cluster. By providing also upper bounds for the smallest singular value, this completely settles the univariate case and pairs of nodes in the multivariate case, both including reasonable sharp constants. For larger clusters, we show that the smallest singular v…
We prove upper and lower bounds for the spectral condition number of rectangular Vandermonde matrices with nodes on the complex unit circle. The nodes are "off the grid", pairs of nodes nearly collide, and the studied condition number grows linearly with the inverse separation distance. Such growth rates are known in greater generality if all nodes collide or for groups of colliding nodes. For pairs of nodes, we provide reasonable sharp constants that are independent of the number of nodes as long as non-colliding nodes are well-separated.
We study the problem of super-resolution of a linear combination of Dirac distributions and their derivatives on a one-dimensional circle from noisy Fourier measurements. Following numerous recent works on the subject, we consider the geometric setting of "partial clustering", when some Diracs can be separated much below the Rayleigh limit. Under this assumption, we prove sharp asymptotic bounds for the smallest singular value of a corresponding rectangular confluent Vandermonde matrix with nodes on the unit circle. As a consequence, we derive matching lower and upper min-max error bounds for …
Following recent interest by the community, the scaling of the minimal singular value of a Vandermonde matrix with nodes forming clusters on the length scale of Rayleigh distance on the complex unit circle is studied. Using approximation theoretic properties of exponential sums, we show that the decay is only single exponential in the size of the largest cluster, and the bound holds for arbitrary small minimal separation distance. We also obtain a generalization of well-known bounds on the smallest eigenvalue of the generalized prolate matrix in the multi-cluster geometry. Finally, the results…
Vandermonde matrices are exponentially ill-conditioned, rendering the familiar "polyval(polyfit)" algorithm for polynomial interpolation and least-squares fitting ineffective at higher degrees. We show that Arnoldi orthogonalization fixes the problem.
We study rectangular Vandermonde matrices $\mathbf{V}$ with $N+1$ rows and $s$ irregularly spaced nodes on the unit circle, in cases where some of the nodes are "clustered" together -- the elements inside each cluster being separated by at most $h \lesssim {1\over N}$, and the clusters being separated from each other by at least $θ\gtrsim {1\over N}$. We show that any pair of column subspaces corresponding to two different clusters are nearly orthogonal: the minimal principal angle between them is at most $$\fracπ{2}-\frac{c_1}{N θ}-c_2 N h,$$ for some constants $c_1,c_2$ depending only on the…
This paper presents a self-contained factorization for the Vandermonde matrices associated with true-time delay based wideband analog multi-beam beamforming using antenna arrays. The proposed factorization contains sparse and orthogonal matrices. Novel self-recursive radix-2 algorithms for Vandermonde matrices associated with true time delay based delay-sum filterbanks are presented to reduce the circuit complexity of multi-beam analog beamforming systems. The proposed algorithms for Vandermonde matrices by a vector attain $\mathcal{O}(N \log N)$ delay-amplifier circuit counts. Error bounds fo…
In the papers dealing with derivation and applications of operational matrices of Bernstein polynomials, a basis transformation, commonly a transformation to power basis, is used. The main disadvantage of this method is that the transformation may be ill-conditioned. Moreover, when applied to the numerical simulation of a functional differential equation, it leads to dense operational matrices and so a dense coefficient matrix is obtained. In this paper, we present a new property for Bernstein polynomials. Using this property, we build exact banded operational matrices for derivatives of Berns…
For many functions of matrices $f(A)$, it is known that their entries exhibit a rapid -- often exponential or even superexponential -- decay away from the sparsity pattern of the matrix $A$. In this paper we specifically focus on the class of Bernstein functions, which contains the fractional powers $A^α$, $α\in (0,1)$ as an important special case, and derive new decay bounds by exploiting known results for the matrix exponential in conjunction with the Lévy--Khintchine integral representation. As a particular special case, we find a result concerning the power law decay of the strength of con…
Inverse Vandermonde matrix calculation is a long-standing problem to solve nonsingular linear system $Vc=b$ where the rows of a square matrix $V$ are constructed by progression of the power polynomials. It has many applications in scientific computing including interpolation, super-resolution, and construction of special matrices applied in cryptography. Despite its numerous applications, the matrix is highly ill-conditioned where specialized treatments are considered for approximation such as conversion to Cauchy matrix, spectral decomposition, and algorithmic tailoring of the numerical solut…
Bernstein polynomials, long a staple of approximation theory and computational geometry, have also increasingly become of interest in finite element methods. Many fundamental problems in interpolation and approximation give rise to interesting linear algebra questions. Previously, we gave block-structured algorithms for inverting the Bernstein mass matrix on simplicial cells, but did not study fast alorithms for the univariate case. Here, we give several approaches to inverting the univariate mass matrix based on exact formulae for the inverse; decompositions of the inverse in terms of Hankel,…
This paper offers a review of numerical methods for computation of the eigenvalues of Hermitian matrices and the singular values of general and some classes of structured matrices. The focus is on the main principles behind the methods that guarantee high accuracy even in the cases that are ill-conditioned for the conventional methods. First, it is shown that a particular structure of the errors in a finite precision implementation of an algorithm allows for a much better measure of sensitivity and that computation with high accuracy is possible despite a large classical condition number. Such…
This work extends the concepts of algebraic flux correction and convex limiting to continuous high-order Bernstein finite element discretizations of scalar hyperbolic problems. Using an array of adjustable diffusive fluxes, the standard Galerkin approximation is transformed into a nonlinear high-resolution scheme which has the compact sparsity pattern of the piecewise-linear or multilinear subcell discretization. The representation of this scheme in terms of invariant domain preserving states makes it possible to prove the validity of local discrete maximum principles under CFL-like conditions…
A quasi-Toeplitz (QT) matrix is a semi-infinite matrix of the form $A=T(a)+E$ where $T(a)$ is the Toeplitz matrix with entries $(T(a))_{i,j}=a_{j-i}$, for $a_{j-i}\in\mathbb C$, $i,j\ge 1$, while $E$ is a matrix representing a compact operator in $\ell^2$. The matrix $A$ is finitely representable if $a_k=0$ for $k<-m$ and for $k>n$, given $m,n>0$, and if $E$ has a finite number of nonzero entries. The problem of numerically computing eigenpairs of a finitely representable QT matrix is investigated, i.e., pairs $(λ,{\bf v})$ such that $A{\bf v}=λ{\bf v}$, with $λ\in\mathbb C$, ${\bf v}=(v_j)_{j…
We improve the current best running time value to invert sparse matrices over finite fields, lowering it to an expected $O\big(n^{2.2131}\big)$ time for the current values of fast rectangular matrix multiplication. We achieve the same running time for the computation of the rank and nullspace of a sparse matrix over a finite field. This improvement relies on two key techniques. First, we adopt the decomposition of an arbitrary matrix into block Krylov and Hankel matrices from Eberly et al. (ISSAC 2007). Second, we show how to recover the explicit inverse of a block Hankel matrix using low disp…
