In this note we prove a correspondence between the Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model of the Lie supergroup GL(1|1) and a free model consisting of two scalars and a pair of symplectic fermions. This model was discussed earlier by LeClair. Vertex operators for the symplectic fermions include twist fields, and correlation functions of GL(1|1) agree with the known results for the scalars and symplectic fermions. We perform a detailed study of boundary states for symplectic fermions and apply them to branes in GL(1|1). This allows us to compute new amplitudes of strings stretching between branes of different types and confirming Cardy's condition.
We investigate the set of boundary states in the symplectic fermion description of the logarithmic conformal field theory with central charge c=-2. We show that the thus constructed states correspond exactly to those derived under the restrictions of the maximal chiral symmetry algebra for this model, W(2,3,3,3). This connects our previous work to the coherent state approach of Kawai and Wheater.
We study two-dimensional conformal field theories generated from a ``symplectic fermion'' - a free two-component fermion field of spin one - and construct the maximal local supersymmetric conformal field theory generated from it. This theory has central charge c=-2 and provides the simplest example of a theory with logarithmic operators. Twisted states with respect to the global SL(2,C)-symmetry of the symplectic fermions are introduced and we describe in detail how one obtains a consistent set of twisted amplitudes. We study orbifold models with respect to finite subgroups of SL(2,C) and obta…
The microscopic spectral correlations of the Dirac operator in Yang-Mills theories coupled to fermions in (2+1) dimensions can be related to three universality classes of Random Matrix Theory. In the microscopic limit the Orthogonal Ensemble (OE) corresponds to a theory with 2 colors and fermions in the fundamental representation and the Symplectic Ensemble (SE) corresponds to an arbitrary number of colors and fermions in the adjoint representation. Using a new method of Widom, we derive an expression for the two scalar kernels which through quaternion determinants give all spectral correlatio…
The aim of this paper is two-fold. First, we define symplectic maps between Hitchin systems related to holomorphic bundles of different degrees. We call these maps the Symplectic Hecke Correspondence (SHC) of the corresponding Higgs bundles. They are constructed by means of the Hecke correspondence of the underlying holomorphic bundles. SHC allows to construct Bäcklund transformations in the Hitchin systems defined over Riemann curves with marked points. We apply the general scheme to the elliptic Calogero-Moser (CM) system and construct SHC to an integrable $\SLN$ Euler-Arnold top (the ellipt…
We review the classical boson-fermion correspondence in the context of the $\widehat{sl(2)}$ current algebra at level 2. This particular algebra is ideal to exhibit this correspondence because it can be realized either in terms of three real bosonic fields or in terms of one real and one complex fermionic fields. We also derive a fermionic realization of the quantum current algebra $U_q(\widehat{sl(2)})$ at level 2 and by comparing this realization with the existing bosonic one we extend the classical correspondence to the quantum case.
Recently, Okuyama and Sakai proposed a novel holomorphic anomaly equation for the partition function of 2d Yang-Mills theory on a torus, based on an anholomorphic deformation of the propagator in the bosonic formulation. Using the boson-fermion correspondence, we derive the formula for the deformed partition function in fermionic description and give a proof of the holomorphic anomaly equation.
We construct a wave-functional whose argument couples to boundary fermion currents in the AdS/CFT correspondence. Using this we calculate the contributions from bulk fermions to the chiral anomaly that give the subleading order term in the exact $N$-dependence of the chiral anomaly of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM. The result agrees with the calculation of Bilal & Chu.
Courant algebroids correspond to degree-2 symplectic differential graded manifolds or NQ-manifolds for short. We review how a similar construction shows that locally the gauge structure of Double Field Theory corresponds to degree-2 symplectic pre-NQ manifolds. To illustrate first steps towards a global understanding of the pre-NQ case, we apply the local constructions to 3-dimensional nilmanifolds carrying an abelian gerbe. These are among prime examples where T-duality is well-understood and allow us to investigate classic results in the graded language.
In the Standard Model of electroweak interactions the fundamental fermions acquire masses by the Yukawa interaction with the (spin 0) Higgs field. In our model spin 1/2 fermions acquire masses by an interaction with (spin 1) gauge field with symplectic symmetry.
We extend the non-relativistic AdS/CFT correspondence to the fermionic fields. In particular we study the two point function of a fermionic operator in non-relativistic CFTs by making use of a massive fermion propagating in geometries with Schrodinger group isometry. Although the boundary of the geometries with Schrodinger group isometry differ from that in AdS geometries where the dictionary of AdS/CFT is established, using the general procedure of AdS/CFT correspondence, we see that the resultant two point function has the expected form for fermionic operators in non-relativistic CFTs, thoug…
We study the equations of motion of fermions in type IIB supergravity in the context of the gauge/gravity correspondence. The main motivation is the search for normalizable fermionic zero modes in such backgrounds, to be interpreted as composite massless fermions in the dual theory. We specialize to backgrounds characterized by a constant dilaton and a self-dual three-form. In the specific case of the Klebanov--Strassler solution we construct explicitly the fermionic superpartner of the Goldstone mode associated with the broken baryonic symmetry. The fermionic equations could also be used to s…
We consider the problem of Dirac fermions propagating on a spacetime of Schrödinger isometry and the associated boundary Euclidean two-point function of fermionic scaling operators of the holographic dual non-relativistic conformal theory. Paying careful attention to the representations of the Schrödinger algebra that appear in this problem, we show carefully how the on-shell action is constructed and how the boundary theory may be renormalized consistently by the inclusion of appropriate Galilean invariant boundary counterterms.
Let V be the even part of the vertex operator super-algebra of r pairs of symplectic fermions. Up to two conjectures, we show that V admits a unique holomorphic extension if r is a multiple of 8, and no holomorphic extension otherwise. This is implied by two results obtained in this paper: 1) If r is a multiple of 8, one possible holomorphic extension is given by the lattice vertex operator algebra for the even self dual lattice $D_r^+$ with shifted stress tensor. 2) We classify Lagrangian algebras in SF(h), a ribbon category associated to symplectic fermions. The classification of holomorphic…
We describe a class of examples of braided monoidal categories which are built from Hopf algebras in symmetric categories. The construction is motivated by a calculation in two-dimensional conformal field theory and is tailored to contain the braided monoidal categories occurring in the study of the Ising model, their generalisation to Tamabara-Yamagami categories, and categories occurring for symplectic fermions.
We identify natural degrees of freedom of polycrystalline materials -- affine transformations of grains -- with those of a three-dimensional lattice theory for $(T\otimesΩ)(\mathbb{R}^3)$. We define a lattice Dirac operator on this space and identify its continuous limit with the free field limit of the whole fermionic sector of the standard model. Fermion doubling is used here as a tool to obtain the necessary number of steps of freedom. The correspondence extends to important structural properties (families, colors, flavor pairs, electromagnetic charge). We find a lattice version of chiral s…
A free quantum field theory with Lorentz symmetry is derived for spin-half symplectic fermions in 2+1 dimensions. In particular, we show that fermionic spin-half fields may be canonically quantized in a free theory with a Klein-Gordon Lagrangian. This theory is shown to have all the required properties of a consistent free quantum field theory, namely causality, unitarity, adherence to the spin-statistics theorem, CPT symmetry, and the Hermiticity and positive definiteness of the Hamiltonian. The global symmetry of the free theory is Sp(4) $\simeq$ SO(5). Possible interacting theories of both …
In these lectures I consider the Hitchin integrable systems and their relations with the self-duality equations and the twisted super-symmetric Yang-Mills theory in four dimension follow Hitchin and Kapustin-Witten. I define the Symplectic Hecke correspondence between different integrable systems. As an example I consider Elliptic Calogero-Moser system and integrable Euler-Arnold top on coadjoint orbits of the group GL(N,C) and explain the Symplectic Hecke correspondence for these systems.
In this article, we construct a $2$-category of Lagrangians in a fixed shifted symplectic derived stack S. The objects and morphisms are all given by Lagrangians living on various fiber products. A special case of this gives a $2$-category of $n$-shifted symplectic derived stacks $Symp^n$. This is a $2$-category version of Weinstein's symplectic category in the setting of derived symplectic geometry. We introduce another $2$-category $Symp^{or}$ of $0$-shifted symplectic derived stacks where the objects and morphisms in $Symp^0$ are enhanced with orientation data. Using this, we define a parti…
We compute the recently introduced Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten theory of W-curves in genus zero for quintic polynomials in five variables and we show that it matches the Gromov-Witten genus-zero theory of the quintic three-fold via a symplectic transformation. More specifically, we show that the J-function encoding the Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten theory on the A-side equals via a mirror map the I-function embodying the period integrals at the Gepner point on the B-side. This identification inscribes the physical Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence within the enumerative geometry of moduli of curve…
We study a model of N component symplectic fermions in D spacetime dimensions. It has an infra-red stable fixed point in 2<D<4 dimensions referred to as Sp{2N}{D}. Based on the comparison of exponents, we conjecture that the critical exponents for the 3D Wilson-Fisher fixed point for an O(N) invariant N-component bosonic field can be computed in the Sp{-2N}{3} theory. The 3D Ising model corresponds to Sp{-2}{3}. The exponent beta agrees with known results to 1 part in 1000 and is within current error bars. The nu exponent agrees to 1% and we suggest this because we only went to 1-loop for this…
We consider critical dense polymers ${\cal L}(1,2)$. We obtain for this model the eigenvalues of the local integrals of motion of the underlying Conformal Field Theory by means of Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz. We give a detailed description of the relation between this model and Symplectic Fermions including the indecomposable structure of the transfer matrix. Integrals of motion are defined directly on the lattice in terms of the Temperley Lieb Algebra and their eigenvalues are obtained and expressed as an infinite sum of the eigenvalues of the continuum integrals of motion. An elegant decompos…
We study a model of N-component complex fermions with a kinetic term that is second order in derivatives. This symplectic fermion model has an Sp(2N) symmetry, which for any N contains an SO(3) subgroup that can be identified with rotational spin of spin-1/2 particles. Since the spin-1/2 representation is not promoted to a representation of the Lorentz group, the model is not fully Lorentz invariant, although it has a relativistic dispersion relation. The hamiltonian is pseudo-hermitian, H^\dagger = C H C, which implies it has a unitary time evolution. Renormalization-group analysis shows the …
We investigate the possibility of spatially homogeneous and inhomogeneous chiral fermion-antifermion condensation and superconducting fermion-fermion pairing in the (1+1)-dimensional model by Chodos {\it et al.} [ Phys. Rev. D 61, 045011 (2000)] generalized to continuous chiral invariance. The consideration is performed at nonzero values of temperature $T$, electric charge chemical potential $μ$ and chiral charge chemical potential $μ_5$. It is shown that at $G_1<G_2$, where $G_1$ and $G_2$ are the coupling constants in the fermion-antifermion and fermion-fermion channels, the $(μ,μ_5)$-phase …
In this paper the duality correspondence between fermion-antifermion and difermion interaction channels is established in two (2+1)-dimensional Gross-Neveu type models with a fermion number chemical potential $μ$ and a chiral chemical potential $μ_5$. The role and influence of this property on the phase structure of the models are investigated. In particular, it is shown that the chemical potential $μ_5$ promotes the appearance of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking, whereas the chemical potential $μ$ contributes to the emergence of superconductivity.
There are important conjectures about logarithmic conformal field theories (LCFT), which are constructed as kernel of screening operators acting on the vertex algebra of the rescaled root lattice of a finite-dimensional semisimple complex Lie algebra. In particular their representation theory should be equivalent to the representation theory of an associated small quantum group. This article solves the case of the rescaled root lattice $B_n/\sqrt{2}$ as a first working example beyond $A_1/\sqrt{p}$. We discuss the kernel of short screening operators, its representations and graded characters. …
We show that the string bit model suffers from doubling in the fermionic sector. The doubling leads to strong violation of supersymmetry in the limit $N\to\infty$. Since there is an exact correspondence between string bits and the algebra of BMN operators even at finite $N$, doubling is expected also on the side of super-Yang--Mills theory. We discuss the origin of the doubling in the BMN sector.
We introduce a family of factorisable ribbon quasi-Hopf algebras $Q(N)$ for $N$ a positive integer: as an algebra, $Q(N)$ is the semidirect product of $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{Z}_2$ with the direct sum of a Grassmann and a Clifford algebra in $2N$ generators. We show that $Rep Q(N)$ is ribbon equivalent to the symplectic fermion category $SF(N)$ that was computed by the third author from conformal blocks of the corresponding logarithmic conformal field theory. The latter category in turn is conjecturally ribbon equivalent to representations of $V_{ev}$, the even part of the symplectic fermion vertex…
We consider the (finite-dimensional) small quantum group $\bar{U}_q sl(2)$ at $q=i$. We show that $\bar{U}_i sl(2)$ does not allow for an R-matrix, even though $U \otimes V \cong V \otimes U$ holds for all finite-dimensional representations $U,V$ of $\bar{U}_i sl(2)$. We then give an explicit coassociator $Φ$ and an R-matrix $R$ such that $\bar{U}_i sl(2)$ becomes a quasi-triangular quasi-Hopf algebra. Our construction is motivated by the two-dimensional chiral conformal field theory of symplectic fermions with central charge $c=-2$. There, a braided monoidal category, $\mathcal{SF}$, has been…
The emergence of flagpole and flag-dipole singular spinor fields is explored, in the context of fermionic sectors of fluid/gravity correspondence, arising from the duality between the gravitino, in supergravity, and the phonino, in supersymmetric hydrodynamics. Generalized black branes, whose particular case consists of the AdS--Schwarzschild black brane, are regarded. The correspondence between hydrodynamic transport coefficients, and the universal absorption cross sections of the generalized black branes, is extended to fermionic sectors, including supersound diffusion constants. A free para…
The greybody factors for spin 1/2 particles in the BTZ black holes are discussed from 2D CFT in bulk-boundary correspondence. It is found that the initial state of spin 1/2 particle in the BTZ black holes can be described by the Poincaré vacuum state in boundary 2D CFT, and the nonlinear coordinate transformation causes the thermalization of the Poincaré vacuum state. For special case, our results for the greybody factors agree with the semiclassical calculation.
This is an extension of quantum spinor construction in \cite{DF2}. We define quantum affine Clifford algebras based on the tensor category and the solutions of q-KZ equations, construct quantum spinor representations of $U_q(\hat{\frak gl}(n))$ and explain classical and quantum boson-fermion correspondence.
When a quantum field theory possesses topological excitations in a phase with spontaneously broken symmetry, these are created by operators which are non-local with respect to the order parameter. Due to non-locality, such disorder operators have non-trivial correlation functions even in free massive theories. In two dimensions, these correlators can be expressed exactly in terms of solutions of non-linear differential equations. The correlation functions of the one-parameter family of non-local operators in the free charged bosonic and fermionic models are the inverse of each other. We point …
We connect twisted vertex operator presentation of Hall-Littlewood polynomials with the action of charged free fermions, describe a boson-fermion correspondence that relates twisted vertex operators with classical Heisenberg algebra. We also show that the elements of the orthogonal to Schur functions basis of the one-parameter deformation of the ring of symmetric functions $Λ[t]$ are $τ$-functions of KP hierarchy.
The interacting symplectic fermion model in two spatial dimensions is further analyzed. As an effective low energy theory, the model is unitary. We show that a relativistic mass m is dynamically generated and derive a gap equation for it. By incorporating a finite temperature we study some fundamental properties of the model, such as the specific heat and spin response, which clearly show non-Fermi liquid properties. We find that various physical properties are suppressed at temperatures T< T* where the cross-over scale is T* = m. As a simplified, toy model of high Tc superconductivity, we thu…
From a deformed AdS$_5$ space, we used the string/gauge duality to study the deep inelastic scattering for unpolarized fermions with spin 1/2, considering the large Bjorken $x$ parameter regime. Here, we also took into account an anomalous dimension of an operator which represents fermions at the boundary. From this analysis, we compute the corresponding structure functions, which are dependent on $x$ and on the photon virtuality $q$. The results achieved are in agreement with the experimental data.
Using Random Matrix Theory we set out to compute the microscopic correlators of the Euclidean Dirac operator in four dimensions. In particular we consider: the chiral Orthogonal Ensemble (chOE), corresponding to a Yang-Mills theory with two colors and fermions in the fundamental representation, and the chiral Symplectic Ensemble (chSE), corresponding to any number of colors and fermions in the adjoint representation. In both cases we deal with an arbitrary number of massive fermions. We use a recent method proposed by H. Widom for deriving closed formulas for the scalar kernels from which all …
In this paper, we study five-dimensional Dirac fermions of which extra-dimension is compactified on quantum graphs. We find that there is a non-trivial correspondence between matrices specifying boundary conditions at the vertex of the quantum graphs and zero-dimensional Hamiltonians in gapped free-fermion systems. Based on the correspondence, we provide a complete topological classification of the boundary conditions in terms of non-interacting fermionic topological phases. The ten symmetry classes of topological phases are fully identified in the language of five-dimensional Dirac fermions, …
For the description of space-time fermions, Dirac-Kähler fields (inhomogeneous differential forms) provide an interesting alternative to the Dirac spinor fields. In this paper we develop a similar concept within the symplectic geometry of phase-spaces. Rather than on space-time, symplectic Dirac-Kähler fields can be defined on the classical phase-space of any Hamiltonian system. They are equivalent to an infinite family of metaplectic spinor fields, i.e. spinors of Sp(2N), in the same way an ordinary Dirac-Kähler field is equivalent to a (finite) mulitplet of Dirac spinors. The results are int…
The field theory of nonrelativistic fermions interacting via contact interactions can be used to calculate the properties of few-body systems of cold atoms confined in harmonic traps. The state-operator correspondence of Non-Relativistic Conformal Field Theory (NRCFT) shows that the energy eigenvalues (in oscillator units) of N harmonically trapped fermions can be calculated from the scaling dimensions of N-fermion operators in the NRCFT. They are also in one-to-one correspondence with zero-energy, scale-invariant solutions to the N-body problem in free space. We show that these two mappings o…
We study the algebraic properties of plethystic vertex operators, introduced in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 43 405202 (2010), underlying the structure of symmetric functions associated with certain generalized universal character rings of subgroups of the general linear group, defined to stabilize tensors of Young symmetry type characterized by a partition of arbitrary shape π. Here we establish an extension of the well-known boson-fermion correspondence involving Schur functions and their associated (Bernstein) vertex operators: for each π, the modes generated by the plethystic vertex operators …
We prove a version of the Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence for the mirror quintic. In particular we calculate the genus-zero FJRW theory for the pair (W, G) where W is the Fermat quintic polynomial and G = SL(W). We identify it with the Gromov-Witten theory of the mirror quintic three-fold via an explicit analytic continuation and symplectic transformation. In the process we prove a mirror theorem for the corresponding Landau-Ginzburg model (W,G).
We consider two different physical systems for which the basis of the Hilbert space can be parametrized by Young diagrams: free complex fermions and the phase model of strongly correlated bosons. Both systems have natural, well-known deformations parametrized by a parameter Q: the former one is related to the deformed boson-fermion correspondence introduced by N. Jing, while the latter is the so-called Q-boson, arising also in the context of quantum groups. These deformations are equivalent and can be realized in the same way in the algebra of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. Without a def…
Guided by the many-particle quantum theory of interacting systems, we develop a uniform classification scheme for topological phases of disordered gapped free fermions, encompassing all symmetry classes of the Tenfold Way. We apply this scheme to give a mathematically rigorous proof of bulk-boundary correspondence. To that end, we construct real C$^\ast$-algebras harbouring the bulk and boundary data of disordered free-fermion ground states. These we connect by a natural bulk-to-boundary short exact sequence, realising the bulk system as a quotient of the half-space theory modulo boundary cont…
