Measuring the 3D distribution of mass on galaxy cluster scales is a crucial test of the LCDM model, providing constraints on the nature of dark matter. Recent work investigating mass distributions of individual galaxy clusters (e.g. Abell 1689) using weak and strong gravitational lensing has revealed potential inconsistencies between the predictions of structure formation models relating halo mass to concentration and those relationships as measured in massive clusters. However, such analyses employ simple spherical halo models while a growing body of work indicates that triaxial 3D halo structure is both common and important in parameter estimates. We recently introduced a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method to fit fully triaxial models to weak lensing data that gives parameter and error estimates that fully incorporate the true shape uncertainty present in nature. In this paper we apply that method to weak lensing data obtained with the ESO/MPG Wide-Field Imager for galaxy clusters A1689, A1835, and A2204, under a range of Bayesian priors derived from theory and from independent X-ray and strong lensing observations. For Abell 1689, using a simple strong lensing prior we find marginalized mean parameter values M_200 = (0.83 +- 0.16)x10^15 M_solar/h and C=12.2 +- 6.7, which are marginally consistent with the mass-concentration relation predicted in LCDM. The large error contours that accompany our triaxial parameter estimates more accurately represent the true extent of our limited knowledge of the structure of galaxy cluster lenses, and make clear the importance of combining many constraints from other theoretical, lensing (strong, flexion), or other observational (X-ray, SZ, dynamical) data to confidently measure cluster mass profiles. We here combine Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, X-ray observations and spectroscopic redshifts of member galaxies, to constrain the intrinsic three-dimensional shape of the galaxy cluster: Abell 370. The cluster turns out to be strongly elongated along the l.o.s., with two (or more) substructures in the process of merging. Spectroscopy further suggests that the process must be taking place at a small angle respect to the l.o.s.
We present two weak lensing reconstructions of the nearby ($z_{cl}=0.055$) merging cluster Abell 3667, based on observations taken $\sim 1$ year apart under different seeing conditions. This is the lowest redshift cluster with a weak lensing mass reconstruction to date. The reproducibility of features in the two mass maps demonstrate that weak lensing studies of low-redshift clusters are feasible. These data constitute the first results from an X-ray luminosity-selected weak lensing survey of 19 low-redshift ($z< 0.1$) southern clusters.
We analyze the mass content of the massive strong-lensing cluster Abell 586 ($z = 0.17$). We use optical data (imaging and spectroscopy) obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) mounted on the 8-m Gemini-North telescope, together with publicly available X-ray data taken with the \textit{Chandra} space telescope. Employing different techniques -- velocity distribution of galaxies, weak gravitational lensing, and X-ray spatially resolved spectroscopy -- we derive mass and velocity dispersion estimates from each of them. All estimates agree well with each other, within a 68% conf…
We discuss lensing properties of the nearby cluster Abell 2152. Recent work shows that Abell 2152 is actually the projection of two different clusters, one of which is a Hercules supercluster member at z=0.043, while the other is more than 3 times as distant. The cluster centers have a projected separation of only 2.4 arcmin, and our data indicate that the foreground cluster lenses members of the background one. We have an ongoing program to measure the magnification of the fundamental plane in the background cluster. The magnification of this standard rod will provide an estimate of the foreg…
Measuring the distribution of mass on galaxy cluster scales is a crucial test of the Lambda CDM model, providing constraints on the nature of dark matter. Recent work investigating mass distributions of individual galaxy clusters using gravitational lensing has illuminated potential inconsistencies between the predictions of structure formation models relating halo mass to concentration and those relationships as measured in massive clusters. However, such analyses typically employ only simple spherical halo models with canonical NFW slopes, while the halos formed in simulations show a range o…
Weak lensing analysis is applied to a deep, one square degree r-band CFHT-Megacam image of the Abell 2163 field. The observed shear is fitted with Single Isothermal Sphere and Navarro-Frenk-White models to obtain the velocity dispersion and the mass, respectively; in addition, aperture densitometry is also used to provide a mass estimate at different distances from the cluster centre. The luminosity function is finally derived, allowing to estimate the mass/luminosity ratio. Previous weak lensing analyses performed at smaller scales produced somewhat contradictory results. The mass and velocit…
We present a new estimate of the projected X-ray mass of Abell 1689 observed with Chandra, in an attempt to clarify the issue of whether or not there exists a discrepancy between X-ray and gravitational lensing mass estimates claimed in previous investigations based on {\it Einstein}, {\it ROSAT} and {\it ASCA} observations. A particular attention is paid to examining if there is an offset between X-ray centroid and central dominant cD galaxy, which may be an indicator of the presence of local dynamical activities of intracluster gas in the central core and therefore, explain the discrepancy b…
We present a high resolution dark matter reconstruction of the z=0.165 Abell 901/902 supercluster from a weak lensing analysis of the HST STAGES survey. We detect the four main structures of the supercluster at high significance, resolving substructure within and between the clusters. We find that the distribution of dark matter is well traced by the cluster galaxies, with the brightest cluster galaxies marking out the strongest peaks in the dark matter distribution. We also find a significant extension of the dark matter distribution of Abell 901a in the direction of an infalling X-ray group …
We apply a new non-parametric technique to reconstruct, with uncertainties, the projected mass distribution of the inner region of Abell 2218, using combined strong and weak lensing constraints from multiple-image systems and arclets with known redshifts. The reconstructed mass map broadly resembles previous, less detailed, parametric models, but when examined in detail shows several sub-structures, not necessarily associated with light but strongly required by the lensing data. In particular, the highest mass peak is offset by about 30 kpc/h50 from the main light peak, and projected mass-to-l…
We discuss the physical nature of a remarkably faint pair of Lyman alpha-emitting images discovered close to the giant cD galaxy in the lensing cluster Abell 2218 (z=0.18) during a systematic survey for highly-magnified star-forming galaxies beyond z=5. A well-constrained mass model suggests the pair arises via a gravitationally-lensed source viewed at high magnification. Keck spectroscopy confirms the lensing hypothesis and implies the unlensed source is a very faint (I~30) compact (<150 pc) and isolated object at z=5.576 whose optical emission is substantially contained within the Lyman alph…
The steep mass profile of A1689 derived from recent detailed lensing observations is not readily reconciled with the low concentration halos predicted by the standard CDM model. However, halo triaxiality may act to bias the profile constraints derived assuming a spherically symmetric mass distribution, since lensing relates only to the projected mass distribution. A degree of halo triaxiality is inherent to the CDM structure formation, arising from the collision-less nature of the dark matter. Here we compare the CDM-based model predictions of triaxial halo with the precise lensing measurement…
Abell 2029 is one of the most studied clusters due to its proximity (z=0.07), its strong X-ray brightness and its giant cD galaxy which is one of the biggest stellar aggregates we know. We present here the first weak lensing mass reconstruction of this cluster made from a deep I-band image of 28.5'x28.5' centered on the cluster cD galaxy. This preliminary result allows us already to show the shape similarities between the cD galaxy and the cluster itself, suggesting that they form actually a single structure. We find a lower estimate of the total mass of 1.8 10^14 h^-1 solar masses within a ra…
The Hubble constant can be constrained using the time delays between multiple images of gravitationally lensed sources. In some notable cases, typical lensing analyses assuming isothermal galaxy density profiles produce low values for the Hubble constant, inconsistent with the result of the HST Key Project (72 +- 8 km/s/Mpc). Possible systematics in the values of the Hubble constant derived from galaxy lensing systems can result from a number of factors, e.g. neglect of environmental effects, assumption of isothermality, or contamination by line-of-sight structures. One additional potentially …
As part of a combined Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect (SZE), X-ray and weak lensing survey of low redshift (z<0.1) X-ray clusters, we present SZE images of the z=0.059 X-ray cluster Abell 3266 at three observing frequencies (150, 220, 275 GHz) and after the spectral subtraction of primary Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies. These images were generated using the ACBAR bolometer array operated on the Viper telescope at the South Pole. The multi-frequency data from ACBAR should allow us to overcome one of the main obstacles facing the analysis of SZE observations of nearby clusters, i.e. con…
We present a gravitational lensing analysis of the galaxy cluster Abell 1689, incorporating measurements of the weak shear, flexion, and strong lensing induced in background galaxies. This is the first time that a shapelet technique has been used to reconstruct the distribution of mass in this cluster, and the first time that a flexion signal has been measured using cluster members as lenses. From weak shear measurements alone, we generate a non-parametric mass reconstruction, which shows significant substructure corresponding to groups of galaxies within the cluster. Additionally, our galaxy-…
There is a long-standing discrepancy between galaxy cluster masses determined from X-ray and gravitational lensing observations of which Abell 1689 is a well-studied example. In this work we take advantage of 180 ks of Chandra X-ray observations and a new weak gravitational study based on a Hubble Space Telescope mosaic covering the central 1.8 Mpc x 1.4 Mpc to eliminate the mass discrepancy. In contrast to earlier X-ray analyses where the very circular surface brightness has been inferred as Abell 1689 being spherically symmetric and in hydrostatic equilibrium, a hardness ratio map analysis r…

The lensing cross section of triaxial halos depends on the relative orientation between a halo's principal axes and its line of sight. Consequently, a lensing subsample of randomly oriented halos is not, in general, randomly oriented. Using an isothermal mass model for the lensing galaxies and their host halos, we show that the lensing subsample of halos that produces doubles is preferentially aligned along the lines of sight, whereas halos that produce quads tend to be projected along their middle axes. These preferred orientations result in different projected ellipticity distributions for qu…
We present a gravitational lensing study of the massive galaxy cluster A2219 (redshift 0.22). This investigation is based on multicolour images from U through H, which allows photometric redshifts to be estimated for the background sources. The redshifts provide useful extra information for the lensing models: we show how they can be used to identify a new multiple-image system (and rule out an old one), how this information can be used to anchor the mass model for the cluster, and how the redshifts can be used to construct optimal samples of background galaxies for a weak lensing analysis. Co…
We present a reconstruction of the mass distribution of galaxy cluster Abell 1689 at z = 0.18 using detected strong lensing features from deep HST/ACS observations and extensive ground based spectroscopy. Earlier analyses have reported up to 32 multiply imaged systems in this cluster, of which only 3 were spectroscopically confirmed. In this work, we present a parametric strong lensing mass reconstruction using 24 multiply imaged systems with newly determined spectroscopic redshifts, which is a major step forward in building a robust mass model. In turn, the new spectroscopic data allows a mor…
We present a striking new Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observation of the rich cluster Abell 2218 taken with the Wide-Field and Planetary Camera (WFPC2). HST's restored image quality reveals a sizeable number of gravitationally-lensed features in this cluster, significantly more than had been identified using ground-based telescopes. The brightest arcs are resolved by HST and show internal features enabling us to identify multiply-imaged examples, confirming and improving the mass models of the cluster determined from ground-based observations. Although weak lensing has been detected statistic…
We provide a new framework for the joint analysis of cluster observations (JACO) using simultaneous fits to X-ray, Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ), and weak lensing data. Our method fits the mass models simultaneously to all data, provides explicit separation of the gaseous, dark, and stellar components, and--for the first time--allows joint constraints on all measurable physical parameters. JACO includes additional improvements to previous X-ray techniques, such as the treatment of the cluster termination shock and explicit inclusion of the BCG's stellar mass profile. An application of JACO to the ri…
We analyze the seldomly discussed lensing effects expected in low-z clusters (z = 0.05-0.15), using as an example the bright arc (z=0.073) discovered by Campusano and Hardy(1996) near the dominant cD galaxy of the cluster Abell 3408 (z=0.042). We present photometric and spectroscopic observations for both the dominant galaxy and the arc. The mass distribution in A3408 is modeled by scaled versions of the representative distributions derived from studies of clusters at higher redshifts. The two gravitational potentials considered are: i) a ``minimum'' mass case where the mass distribution follo…
(abridged) We utilize existing imaging and spectroscopic data for the galaxy clusters MS2137-23 and Abell 383 to present improved measures of the distribution of dark and baryonic material in the clusters' central regions. Our method, based on the combination of gravitational lensing and dynamical data, is uniquely capable of separating the distribution of dark and baryonic components at scales below 100 kpc. We find a variety of strong lensing models fit the available data, including some with dark matter profiles as steep as expected from recent simulations. However, when combined with stell…
The different regimes of gravitational lensing constitutes an interesting tool in order to map the mass distribution in galaxy clusters on different scales. In this proceedings article, I review some work I have performed on this topic. More precisely, I will focus on : (i) galaxy scale substructures, using weak galaxy-galaxy lensing in order to study how does the environment shape their properties; (ii) the mass profile of Abell~1689 as probed combining strong and weak lensing; (iii) the slope of the inner dark matter distribution in Abell~1703 as measured by strong lensing. The lensing resul…
We report on the detection of dark matter in the cluster Abell 2390 using the weak gravitational distortion of background galaxies. We find that the cluster light and total mass distributions are quite similar over an angular scale of $\simeq 7^\prime \;(1 \Mpc$). The cluster galaxy and mass distributions are centered on the cluster cD galaxy and exhibit elliptical isocontours in the central $\simeq 2^\prime \; (280 \kpc)$. The major axis of the ellipticity is aligned with the direction defined by the cluster cD and a ``straight arc'' located $\simeq 38^{\prime\prime}$ to the northwest. We det…
Weak lensing applied to deep optical images of clusters of galaxies provides a powerful tool to reconstruct the distribution of the gravitating mass associated to these structures. We use the shear signal extracted by an analysis of deep exposures of a region centered around the galaxy cluster Abell 209, at redshift z=0.2, to derive both a map of the projected mass distribution and an estimate of the total mass within a characteristic radius. We use a series of deep archival R-band images from CFHT-12k, covering an area of 0.3 deg^2. We determine the shear of background galaxy images using a n…
We report on the detection of dark matter in the cluster Abell 2218 using the weak gravitational distortion of background galaxies. We find a highly significant, coherent detection of the distortion in the images of the background galaxies. The inferred 2D mass distribution has a peak that is coincident with the optical and X-ray centroid. The qualitative distributions of the cluster light, the X-ray emission and the dark matter are similar and the projected total mass, gas, and light surface densities are consistent with a $r^{-1}$ profile at distance of $r > 180^{\prime\prime}$ from the clus…
Here we apply a recently developed maximum likelihood method for determining best-fit parameterised lens models to observations of the rich lensing cluster Abell 1689. The observations that we use were taken with the ESO/MPG Wide Field Imager. The wide field-of-view enables us to use the weakly lensed images of faint background objects on an unsurpassed range of scales, 0.12Mpc/h<R<1.8Mpc/h from the cluster centre, to determine best-fit models for the 1-parameter singular isothermal sphere (SIS), 2-parameter general power-law and NFW models, and 3-parameter singular isothermal ellipsoid (SIE).…
The cluster Abell 2104 is one of the lowest redshift clusters (z=0.153) known to have a gravitational lensing arc. We present detailed analysis of the cluster properties such as the gravitational potential using the X-ray data from ROSAT (HRI) and ASCA, as well as optical imaging and spectroscopic data from the CFHT. The cluster is highly luminous in the X-ray with a bolometric luminosity of Lx ~3x10^{45} ergs/s and a high gas temperature of ~10.4 keV. The X-ray emission extending out to at least a radius of 1.46 Mpc, displays significant substructure. The total mass deduced from the X-ray dat…
We have carried out an extensive spectroscopic survey with the Keck and VLT telescopes, targeting lensed galaxies in the background of the massive cluster Abell 68. Spectroscopic measurements are obtained for 26 lensed images, including a distant galaxy at z=5.4 . Redshifts have been determined for 5 out of 7 multiply-image systems. Through a careful modeling of the mass distribution in the strongly-lensed regime, we derive a mass estimate of 5.3 x 10^14 Msun within 500 kpc. Our mass model is then used to constrain the redshift distribution of the remaining multiply-imaged and singly-imaged so…
We study the statistics of large-separation gravitational lens systems produced by non-spherical halos in the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) model. Specifically, we examine how the triaxiality of CDM halos affects the overall lensing probabilities and the relative numbers of different image configurations (double, quadruple, and naked cusp lenses). We find that triaxiality significantly enhances lensing probabilities by a factor of ~2-4, so it cannot be ignored. If CDM halos have central density slopes alpha<~1.5, we predict that a significant fraction (>~20%) of large-separation lenses should have na…
The theory predicts that the effect of gravitational lensing by the matter associated with clusters of galaxies can magnify background sources, leading to an enhancement of source number density around foreground clusters of galaxies. We conduct a search for the associations of distant radio-bright quasars with Abell clusters using the 1-Jy and 2-Jy all-sky catalogs. Statistics turns to be very poor on the basis of the 1-Jy sample, which shows no correlations between the distant radio quasars with the foreground Abell clusters above $1σ$ level. However, an apparent association ($>1σ$) of the 2…
We report on the detection of dark matter in the cluster of galaxies Abell~2163 using the weak gravitational distortion of background galaxies, and an analysis of the cluster X-ray emission. We find that while the qualitative distributions of the cluster light and the dark matter are similar -- shallow and extended, with significant substructure -- the X-ray morphology shows a more regular overall appearance. We interpret the joint lensing and X-ray observations as a signature of a merger event in the cluster. We present new ROSAT/HRI data and reanalyze ROSAT/PSPC data, accounting for the effe…
(abridged) We present extensive multi-color imaging and low resolution VIMOS Integral Field Unit spectroscopic observations of the X-ray luminous cluster Abell 2667 (z=0.233). An extremely bright giant gravitational arc (z=1.0334) is easily identified as part of a triple image system and other fainter multiple images are also revealed by the HST-WFPC2 images. The VIMOS-IFU observations cover a field of view of 54'' x 54'' and enable us to determine the redshift of all galaxies down to V=22.5. Furthermore, redshifts could be identified for some sources down to V=23.2. In particular we identify …
We present spatially-resolved X-ray spectroscopy of the luminous lensing cluster Abell 2390, using observations made with the Chandra observatory. The temperature of the X-ray gas is shown to rise with increasing radius within the central ~200 kpc of the cluster, and then remain approximately isothermal, with kT =11.5^{+1.5}_{-1.6} keV, out to the limits of the observations at r~1.0 Mpc. The total mass profile determined from the Chandra data has a form in good agreement with the predictions from numerical simulations. Using the parameterization of Navarro, Frenk & White (1997), we measure a s…
Comparison of the high resolution X-ray ROSAT HRI image of A2218 with the optical HST image shows several interesting correlations. The X-ray emission within a 1' radius core is resolved into several components; the central dominant galaxy does not coincide with either of them or the emission centroid. The major X-ray peak is an elongated feature which coincides with optical arcs at r=20'' from the cD. We speculate that this may be lensed X-ray emission, for example, of the same object lensed in the optical. Alternatively, this feature may be a merger shock, or a gas trail of an infalling subg…
We present the first detection of a gravitational depletion signal at near-infrared wavelengths, based on deep panoramic images of the cluster Abell 2219 (z=0.22) taken with the Cambridge Infrared Survey Instrument (CIRSI) at the prime focus of the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope. Infrared studies of gravitational depletion offer a number of advantages over similar techniques applied at optical wavelengths, and can provide reliable total masses for intermediate redshift clusters. Using the maximum likelihood technique developed by Schneider, King & Erben (1999), we detect the gravitational dep…
The strong lensing modelling of gravitational ``rings'' formed around massive galaxies is sensitive to the amplitude of the external shear and convergence produced by nearby mass condensations. In current wide field surveys, it is now possible to find out a large number of rings, typically 10 gravitational rings per square degree. We propose here, to systematically study gravitational rings around galaxy clusters to probe the cluster mass profile beyond the cluster strong lensing regions. For cluster of galaxies with multiple arc systems, we show that rings found at various distances from the …
We study density cusps in the center of clusters of galaxies to reconcile X-ray mass estimates with gravitational lensing masses. For various mass density models with cusps we compute X-ray surface brightness distribution, and fit them to observations to measure the range of parameters in the density models. The Einstein radii estimated from these density models are compared with Einstein radii derived from the observed arcs for Abell 2163, Abell 2218, and RX J1347.5-1145. The X-ray masses and lensing masses corresponding to these Einstein radii are also compared. While steeper cusps give smal…
We present a deep H-band image of the region in the vicinity of the cluster Abell 1942 containing the puzzling dark matter concentration detected in an optical weak lensing study by Erben et al. (2000). We demonstrate that our limiting magnitude, H=22, would be sufficient to detect clusters of appropriate mass out to redshifts comparable with the mean redshift of the background sources. Despite this, our infrared image reveals no obvious overdensity of sources at the location of the lensing mass peak, nor an excess of sources in the I-H vs. H colour-magnitude diagram. We use this to further co…
We analyze three-band HST/ACS imaging data of the giant elliptical galaxy ESO325-G004. This is the nearest known strongly lensing galaxy, and it resides in the center of the poor cluster Abell S0740 at redshift z=0.034. Based on magnitude, color, and size selection criteria, we identify a sample of 15 ultra-compact dwarf (UCD) galaxy candidates within the ACS field. This is comparable to the numbers of UCDs found within similar regions in more nearby clusters (Virgo, Fornax, Hydra). We estimate circular half-light radii R_e,c from 2-D Sersic and King model fits and apply an upper cutoff of 100…
In this article, we apply strong lensing techniques in Abell 1703, a massive X-ray luminous galaxy cluster at z=0.28. Our analysis is based on imaging data both from space and ground in 8 bands, complemented with a spectroscopic survey. Abell 1703 looks rather circular from the general shape of its multiply imaged systems and present a dominant giant elliptical cD galaxy in its centre. This cluster exhibits a remarkable bright 'central ring' formed by 4 bright images at z_{spec}=0.888 located very close to the cD galaxy, providing observational constraints that are potentially very interesting…
We present spatially-resolved X-ray spectroscopy of the X-ray luminous cluster of galaxies, PKS0745-191, using observations made with the ASCA and ROSAT satellites. The X-ray data measure the density, temperature, and metallicity profiles of the cluster gas and constrain the distribution of mass in the cluster to a radius of \sim 1.5 Mpc. We report the discovery of a bright gravitationally-lensed arc at a redshift, z_{\rm arc} = 0.433, in the cluster. This result identifies PKS0745 as the lowest-redshift cluster (z_{\rm clus} = 0.1028) known to exhibit gravitational lensing. The properties of …
We use the weak gravitational lensing effect to study the mass distribution and dynamical state of a sample of 24 X-ray luminous clusters of galaxies ($0.05<z<0.31$) observed with the VLT-FORS1 under homogeneous sky conditions and subarsecond image quality. The galaxy shapes were measured after deconvolution with a locally determined point-spread-function, while the two-dimensional mass distributions of the clusters were computed using an algorithm based on the maximum entropy method. By comparing the mass and light distributions of the clusters in our sample, we find that their mass centers, …
We describe a new non-parametric technique for reconstructing the mass distribution in galaxy clusters with strong lensing, i.e., from multiple images of background galaxies. The observed positions and redshifts of the images are considered as rigid constraints and through the lens (ray-trace) equation they provide us with linear constraint equations. These constraints confine the mass distribution to some allowed region, which is then found by linear programming. Within this allowed region we study in detail the mass distribution with minimum mass-to-light variation; also some others, such as…
We present interferometric measurements of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect towards the galaxy cluster Abell 370. These measurements, which directly probe the pressure of the cluster's gas, show the gas distribution to be strongly aspherical, as do the x-ray and gravitational lensing observations. We calculate the cluster's gas mass fraction in two ways. We first compare the gas mass derived from the SZ measurements to the lensing-derived gravitational mass near the critical lensing radius. We also calculate the gas mass fraction from the SZ data by deprojecting the three-dimensional gas den…
Weak lensing surveys provide the possibility of identifying dark matter halos based on their total matter content rather than just the luminous matter content. On the basis of two sets of observations carried out with the CFHT, Erben et al. (2000) presented the first candidate dark clump, i.e. a dark matter concentration identified by its significant weak lensing signal without a corresponding galaxy overdensity or X-ray emission. We present a set of HST mosaic observations which confirms the presence of an alignment signal at the dark clump position. The signal strength, however, is weaker th…
(Abridged) We measure the mass distribution of galaxy cluster Abell 1689 within 0.3 Mpc/h_70 of the cluster centre using its strong lensing effect on 32 background galaxies. The multiple images are based on those of Broadhurst et al. 2005 with some modifications. The cluster profile is explored further out to ~2.5 Mpc/h_70 with weak lensing shear measurements from Broadhurst et al. 2005b. The masses of ~200 cluster galaxies are measured with Fundamental Plane in order to accurately model the small scale mass structure in the cluster. The galaxies are modelled as elliptical truncated isothermal…
The Abell 1689 galaxy cluster has recently become a subject of intensive study. Thanks to its intermediate redshift (z=0.183) its mass distribution can be reconstructed using numerous methods including gravitational lensing, galaxy kinematics and X-ray imaging. The methods used to yield conflicting mass estimates in the past and recently the cluster mass distribution has been claimed to be in conflict with standard CDM scenarios due to rather large concentration and steep mass profile obtained from detailed studies of Broadhurst et al. using lensing. By studying in detail the kinematics of abo…
We present the first application of lens magnification to measure the absolute mass of a galaxy cluster; Abell 1689. The absolute mass of a galaxy cluster can be measured by the gravitational lens magnification of a background galaxy population by the cluster potential. The lensing signal is complicated by the variation in number counts due to galaxy clustering and shot-noise, and by additional uncertainties in relating magnification to mass in the strong lensing regime. Clustering and shot-noise can be dealt with using maximum likelihood methods. Local approximations can then be used to estim…
Subaru observations of A1689 (z=0.183) are used to derive an accurate, model-independent mass profile for the entire cluster, r<2 Mpc/h, by combining magnification bias and distortion measurements. The projected mass profile steepens quickly with increasing radius, falling away to zero at r~1.0 Mpc/h, well short of the anticipated virial radius. Our profile accurately matches onto the inner profile, r<200 kpc/h, derived from deep HST/ACS images. The combined ACS and Subaru information is well fitted by an NFW profile with virial mass, (1.93 \pm 0.20)10^15 M_sun, and surprisingly high concentra…
The massive cluster of galaxies Abell 2219 (z = 0.228) was observed at 14.3 $μ$m with the Infrared Space Observatory and results were published by Barvainis et al. (1999). These observations have been reanalyzed using a method specifically designed for the detection of faint sources that had been applied to other clusters. Five new sources were detected and the resulting cumulative total of ten sources all have optical counterparts. The mid-infrared sources are identified with three cluster members, three foreground galaxies, an Extremely Red Object, a star and two galaxies of unknown redshift…
Flat density cores have been obtained for a limited number of clusters of galaxies by strong gravitational lensing. This paper explores the possibility that the degeneracy pressure of fermionic dark matter accounts for the flat top density profiles. This is a case study of A1689 for which the density profile has been obtained from the inner region out to 1Mpc by the combination of strong and weak lensing. In the case that the dark matter consists of the mixture of degenerate relic neutrinos and collisionless cold dark matter particles, the acceptable mass range for relic neutrinos is between 1…
We present the results of a dynamical analysis of the rich X-Ray luminous galaxy cluster Abell 521, and discuss the nature of the arc-like structure first noted by Maurogordato et al. (1996). Our study is based on radial velocities for 41 cluster members, measured from spectra obtained at the European Southern Observatory and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. We find that Abell 521 is an intermediate-redshift cluster (CBI= 74132 (-250,+202)km/s) with a rather high apparent value of the velocity dispersion (SBI= 1386 (-139,+206) km/s). This high value, which cannot be explained by trivial pro…
We present a weak shear analysis of the Abell 901/902 supercluster, composed of three rich clusters at z=0.16. Using a deep R-band image from the 0.5 x 0.5 degree MPG/ESO Wide Field Imager together with supplementary B-band observations, we build up a comprehensive picture of the light and mass distributions in this region. We find that, on average, the light from the early-type galaxies traces the dark matter fairly well, although one cluster is a notable exception to this rule. The clusters themselves exhibit a range of mass-to-light (M/L) ratios, X-ray properties, and galaxy populations. We…
Knowledge of the intrinsic shape of galaxy clusters is very important in investigating cosmic structure formation and astrophysical processes. The reconstruction of the 3-dimensional structure usually relies on deprojecting 2-dimensional X-ray, Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) and/or gravitational lensing observations. As known, a joint analysis of these data sets can provide the elongation of the cluster along the line of sight together with its length and width in the plane of the sky. An unbiased measurement of the Hubble constant can be also inferred. Due to some intrinsic degeneracies, the observat…
We present the on-going observational program of a VIMOS Integral Field Unit survey of the central regions of massive, gravitational lensing galaxy clusters at redshift z~0.2. We have observed six clusters using the low-resolution blue grism (R about 200), and the spectroscopic survey is complemented by a wealth of photometric data, including Hubble Space Telescope optical data and near infrared VLT data. The principal scientific aims of this project are: the study of the high-z lensed galaxies, the transformation and evolution of galaxies in cluster cores and the use of multiple images to con…
We present the first detection of weak gravitational shear at infrared wavelengths, using observations of the lensing cluster Abell 1689, taken with the SofI camera on the ESO-NTT telescope. The imprint of cluster lenses on the shapes of the background galaxy population has previously been harnessed at optical wavelengths, and this gravitational shear signal enables cluster mass distributions to be probed, independent of whether the matter is luminous or dark. At near-infrared wavelengths, the spectrophotometric properties of galaxies facilitate a clean selection of background objects for use …
Abell 2218 is one of a handful of clusters in which X-ray and lensing analyses of the cluster mass are in strong disagreement. It is also a system for which X-ray data and radio measurements of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich decrement have been combined in an attempt to constrain the Hubble constant. However, in the absence of reliable information on the temperature structure of the intracluster gas, most analyses have been carried out under the assumption of isothermality. We combine X-ray data from the ROSAT PSPC and the ASCA GIS instruments, enabling us to fit non-isothermal models, and investigate…
