We present new mid-infrared ($5 - 35μ$m) and ultraviolet (1539 -- 2316 Å) observations of the interacting galaxy system Arp 143 (NGC 2444/2445) from the Spitzer Space Telescope and GALEX. In this system, the central nucleus of NGC 2445 is surrounded by knots of massive star-formation in a ring-like structure. We find unusually strong emission from warm H$_2$ associated with an expanding shock wave between the nucleus and the western knots. At this ridge, the flux ratio between H$_2$ and PAH emission is nearly ten times higher than in the nucleus. Arp 143 is one of the most extreme cases known in that regard. From our multi-wavelength data we derive a narrow age range of the star-forming knots between 2 Myr and 7.5 Myr, suggesting that the ring of knots was formed almost simultaneously in response to the shock wave traced by the H$_2$ emission. However, the knots can be further subdivided in two age groups: those with an age of 2--4 Myr (knots A, C, E, and F), which are associated with $8μ$m emission from PAHs, and those with an age of 7-8 Myr (knots D and G), which show little or no $8μ$m emission shells surrounding them. We attribute this finding to an ageing effect of the massive clusters which, after about 6 Myr, no longer excite the PAHs surrounding the knots.
The ESO-Spitzer extragalactic Imaging Survey (ESIS) is the optical follow up of the Spitzer Wide-Area InfraRed Extragalactic (SWIRE) survey in the ELAIS-S1 area. This paper presents B, V, R Wide Field Imager observations of the first 1.5 square degree of the ESIS survey. Data reduction is described including astrometric calibration, illumination and color corrections, completeness and photometric accuracy estimates. Number counts and color distributions are compared to literature observational and theoretical data, including non-evolutionary, PLE, evolutionary and semi-analytic Lambda-CDM gala…
We combine data from SDSS and the GALEX and Spitzer observatories to create a sample of galaxies observed homogeneously from the UV to the Far-IR. This sample, consisting of ~460 galaxies observed spectroscopically by SDSS provides a multiwavelength (0.15-24 micron) view of obscured and unobscured star formation in nearby (z<0.3) galaxies with SFRs ranging from 0.01 to 100 M_solar/yr. We calculate a robust dust measure from the infrared to UV ratio (IRX) and explore the influence of star formation history (SFH) on the dust-UV color relation (i.e. the IRX-beta relation). We find that the UV col…
We present Spitzer mid-infrared imaging of a sample of 35 tidally-distorted pre-merger interacting galaxy pairs selected from the Arp Atlas. We compare their global mid-infrared properties with those of normal galaxies from the SINGS Spitzer Legacy survey, and separate the disk emission from that of the tidal features. The [8.0 micron] - [24 micron], [3.6 micron] - [24 micron], and [5.8 micron] - [8.0 micron] colors of these optically-selected interacting galaxies are redder on average than those of spirals, implying enhancements to the mass-normalized star formation rates (SFRs) of a factor o…
We present Spitzer infrared imaging of the peculiar galaxy pair Arp 107, and compare with an optical H-alpha map and a numerical model of the interaction. The [3.6 micron] - [4.5 micron] colors of clumps in the galaxy do not vary around the ring-like primary spiral arm and are consistent with those of stars, thus these bands are dominated by starlight. In contrast, the [5.8 micron] - [8.0 micron] colors are consistent with those of interstellar dust, and vary by about 0.2 magnitudes around the ring/spiral, with redder colors associated with regions with stronger star formation as indicated by …
(Abridged) Far ultraviolet to far infrared images of the nearby galaxy NGC5194, from Spitzer, GALEX, Hubble Space Telescope and ground--based data, are used to investigate local and global star formation, and the impact of dust extinction in HII-emitting knots. In the IR/UV-UV color plane, the NGC5194 HII knots show the same trend observed for normal star-forming galaxies, having a much larger dispersion than starburst galaxies. We identify the dispersion as due to the UV emission predominantly tracing the evolved, non-ionizing stellar population, up to ages 50-100 Myr. While in starbursts the…
To help understand the effects of galaxy interactions on star formation, we analyze Spitzer infrared and GALEX ultraviolet images of the interacting galaxy pair Arp 82 (NGC 2535/6), and compare to a numerical simulation of the interaction. We investigate the UV and IR properties of several star forming regions (clumps). Using the FUV/NUV colors of the clumps we constrain the ages. The 8 micron and 24 micron luminosities are used to estimate the far-infrared luminosities and the star formation rates of the clumps. We investigate possible gradients in the UV and IR colors. See Smith et al. (2006…
We present deep R and narrow-band Halpha images of Arp 78 obtained with the WIYN 3.5-m telescope on Kitt Peak. GALEX observations had shown a very extended UV structure for this system, reaching beyond the optical radius of Arp 78 and also beyond its previously known Halpha-radius. Our new Halpha data now show agreement not only with the spatial extent of the near- and far-UV maps, but also in terms of structural details. Star formation rates derived from L(Halpha) and L(FUV) are in reasonable agreement, indicating that in this case the upper stellar IMF in the UV-bright outer arm is relativel…
We present measurements obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope in five bands from 3.6-24 microns of the northern inner radio lobe of Centaurus A, the nearest powerful radio galaxy. We show that this emission is synchrotron in origin. Comparison with ultraviolet observations from GALEX shows that diffuse ultraviolet emission exists in a smaller region than the infrared but also coincides with the radio jet. We discuss the possibility, that synchrotron emission is responsible for the ultraviolet emission and conclude that further data are required to confirm this.
A multi-wavelength set of photometric data including UV (GALEX), optical, near-IR, infrared (Spitzer) and radio (VLA 20cm) images and spectroscopic observations are used to map the dust-obscured and unobscured star formation in the galaxy pair ARP 32. The system consists of an actively star-forming galaxy and another one with depressed star formation. The most active galaxy has disrupted morphology and different sites of star formation. Spectroscopic data show hints of nuclear activity in its core, intense star formation in limited regions of the galaxy as well as an underlying population of s…
We present the Submillimeter Array observation of the CO J=2-1 transition towards the northern galaxy, ARP 302N, of the early merging system, ARP 302. Our high angular resolution observation reveals the extended spatial distribution of the molecular gas in ARP 302N. We find that the molecular gas has a very asymmetric distribution with two strong concentrations on either side of the center together with a weaker one offset by about 8 kpc to the north. The molecular gas distribution is also found to be consistent with that from the hot dust as traced by the 24 micro continuum emission observed …
We present GALEX NUV (2310 A) and FUV (1530 A) images of the interacting galaxy NGC 4438 (Arp 120) in the center of the Virgo cluster. These images show an extended (20 kpc) tidal tail at the north-west edge of the galaxy previously undetected at other wavelengths, at 15-25 kpc from its nucleus. Except in the nucleus, the UV morphology of NGC 4438 is totally different from the Halpha+[NII] one, more similar to the X-ray emission, confirming its gas cooling origin. We study the star formation history of NGC 4438 combining spectro-photometric data in the UV-visible-near-IR wavelength range with …
We present Spitzer observations of Tidal Dwarf Galaxies (TDGs) in three interacting systems: NGC 5291, Arp105 and Stephan's Quintet. The spectra show bright emission from polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nebular lines and warm molecular hydrogen, characteristic of recent episodes of star formation. The PAH emission that falls in the IRAC 8.0 micron band leads to the TDGs having an extremely red IRAC color, with [4.5] - [8.0] > 3. The emission from PAHs is characterized by a model with mainly neutral 100-C PAH atoms.
We present Spitzer mid-infrared images from a survey of three dozen pre-merger strongly interacting galaxy pairs selected from the Arp Atlas. The global mid-infrared colors of these galaxies and their tidal tails and bridges are similar to those of normal spiral galaxies, thus this optically selected sample of interacting galaxies does not have strongly enhanced normalized star formation rates in their disks or tidal features. Despite distortion and disturbance these systems continue to form stars at a normal rate on average. The morphology of these galaxies is generally smoother in the shorte…
As part of our Spitzer Spirals, Bridges, and Tails project to help understand the effects of galaxy interactions on star formation, we analyze GALEX ultraviolet, SARA optical, and Spitzer infrared images of the interacting galaxy pair Arp 82 (NGC 2535/6) and compare to a numerical simulation of the interaction. We investigate the multiwavelength properties of several individual star forming complexes (clumps). Using optical and UV colors, EW(Halpha), and population synthesis models we constrain the ages of the clumps and find that the median clump age is about 12 Myr. The clumps have masses ra…
Arp102B is a nearby radio galaxy which displays the presence of double peaked Balmer emission lines. Sub-arcsec Keck mid-infrared imaging and Spitzer spectroscopy reveal a spatially compact mid-infrared source which displays tentative evidence for variability. The F$_ν\proptoν^{-1.2}$ spectral energy distribution is suggestive of an advection dominated accretion flow. The absence of dust features over the 5-40 micron range make it unlikely that thermal dust emission dominates the mid-infrared luminosity. We also detect the presence of molecular hydrogen in emission which is asymmetrically reds…
Spitzer IRAC observations of two fields in the XUV-disk of M83 have been recently obtained,3R_{HII} away from the center of the galaxy (R_{HII)=6.6 kpc).GALEX UV images have shown the two fields to host in-situ recent star formation. The IRAC images are used in conjunction with GALEX data and new HI imaging from THINGS to constrain stellar masses and ages of the UV clumps in the fields, and to relate the local recent star formation to the reservoir of available gas. multi wavelength photometry in the UV and mid-IR bands of 136 UV clumps(spatial resolution >220pc) identified in the two target fie…
We present Spitzer infrared, GALEX UV, and SDSS and SARA optical images of the peculiar interacting galaxy pair Arp 285 (NGC 2856/4), and compare with a new numerical model of the interaction. We estimate the ages of clumps of star formation in these galaxies using population synthesis models, carefully considering the uncertainties on these ages. This system contains a striking example of `beads on a string': a series of star formation complexes ~1 kpc apart. These `beads' are found in a tail-like feature that is perpendicular to the disk of NGC 2856, which implies that it was formed from mat…
We made a multi-wavelength study of young massive star clusters (YSCs) in the interacting galaxy ARP 24, using the optical and ultraviolet images from Hubble Space Telescope (HST), Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and Galaxy Evolution Explorer; the mid-infrared images from Spitzer Space Telescope; and the narrow-band Ha image and optical spectra from the NAOC 2.16m telescope. Based on the HST images, we found that the brightest infrared knot in ARP 24 is associated with a complex of five young massive star clusters, within a region of ~ 0.95" radius (127pc) in size. The ages and masses of the star cl…
We present photometric and spectroscopic data of the interacting starburst galaxy NGC 6052 obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The mid-infrared (MIR) spectra of the three brightest spatially resolved regions in the galaxy are remarkably similar and are consistent with dust emission from young nearly coeval stellar populations. Analysis of the brightest infrared region of the system, which contributes ~18.5 % of the total 16\micron flux, indicates that unlike similar off-nuclear infrared-bright regions found in Arp 299 or NGC 4038/9, its MIR spectrum is inconsistent with an enshrouded ho…
Based on GALEX and IRAS/Spitzer datasets, we have found that both FUV and FIR luminosity functions (LFs) show a strong evolution from z=0 to z=1, but the FIR LF evolves much stronger than the FUV one. Consequently, the FIR/FUV luminosity density ratio increases from 4 (z=0) to 15 (z=1). It means that more than 80% of the star-forming activity in the Universe is hidden by dust at z=1. To explore this issue further, we have performed a combined analysis of the galaxy sample in FUV and FIR. For the Local Universe we used GALEX-IRAS sample, whereas at z=1 we used the Lyman-break galaxy sample sele…
Ultraviolet Luminous Galaxies (UVLGs) have been identified as intensely star-forming, nearby galaxies. A subset of these, the supercompact UVLGs, are believed to be local analogs of high redshift Lyman Break Galaxies. Here we investigate the radio continuum properties of this important population for the first time. We have observed 42 supercompact UVLGs with the VLA, all of which have extensive coverage in the UV/optical by GALEX and SDSS. Our analysis includes comparison samples of multiwavelength data from the Spitzer First Look Survey and from the SDSS-Galex matched catalogs. In addition w…
Star formation in interacting systems may take place in various locations, from the dust--enshrouded core of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies to more unusual places such as the debris of colliding galaxies expelled into the intergalactic medium. Determining whether star-formation proceeds in the latter environment, far from the parent galaxies, in a similar way as in spiral disks has motivated the multi--wavelength study presented here. We collected VLA/HI, UV/GALEX, optical Halpha and MIR/Spitzer images of a few nearby interacting systems chosen for their prominent "intergalactic" star formati…
We present new results for the molecular gas, dust emission and the ionized gas in J1023+1952, an HI rich intergalactic star-forming tidal dwarf galaxy candidate. It is located at the projected intersection of two faint stellar tidal streams wrapped around the interacting pair of galaxies NGC 3227/6 (Arp~94). Using the IRAM 30m telescope, emission from CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) was detected across the entire extent of the neutral hydrogen cloud associated with J1023+1952, a region of the size of 8.9$ x 5.9 kpc, as well as in the nuclear region and outer disk of NGC 3227. The molecular gas is found t…
The combination of both contributions from the observed UV emission and the absorbed radiations reprocessed in the infrared represents the ideal approach to constrain the activity of massive star formation in galaxies. Using recent results from GALEX and Spitzer, we compare the evolutions of the UV and IR energy densities with redshift as well as their contributions to the star formation history at 0<z<1. We find that the comoving IR luminosity is characterized by a much faster evolution than seen in the UV. Our results also indicate that ~70% of the star-forming activity at z~1 is produced by…
Recent observational literature suggests that only a small number of colliding galaxies show substantial star formation enhancements before merging. Most have SFRs comparable to those of late-type field galaxies. Preliminary Spitzer studies (with data from the Spirals, Bridges and Tails and SINGs projects) generally confirm this, though with some caveats. If star formation in isolated disks is self-regulated, while collisions disequilibrate much of the disk, then the similarity to star-formation in isolated disks is surprising. Comparisons of observations and dynamical models suggest some reso…
We analyzed the regions of star formation in the spiral galaxies NGC 3184 and NGC 3938 from archive images at multiple wavelengths (NUV from GALEX, H-alpha from JKT and KPNO, 8 and 24 um from Spitzer, and CO from BIMA). We used the Clump Find Algorithm to extract the properties of the star forming tracers shown as emission regions at each wavelength. We obtained a power-law relation between the luminosity and the emission region volume that scales as expected, $L proportional to V, for the H-alpha and NUV emission; but much faster for the dust (8 and 24 um) and molecular gas emitting regions i…
We present a new method for studying the star formation history of late-type, cluster galaxies undergoing gas starvation or a ram-pressure stripping event by combining bidimensional multifrequency observations with multi-zones models of galactic chemical and spectrophotometricevolution. This method is applied to the Virgo cluster anemic galaxy NGC 4569. We extract radial profiles from recently obtained UV GALEX images at 1530 and 2310 A, from visible and near-IR narrow (Halpha) and broad band images at different wavelengths (u, B, g, V, r, i, z, J, H, K), from Spitzer IRAC and MIPS images and …
Star formation (SF) takes place in unusual places such as way out in the intergalactic medium out of material expelled from parent galaxies. We wish to answer whether SF proceeds in this specific environment in a similar way than in galactic disks. We have carried out a multiwavelength analysis of the interacting system NGC 5291, which is remarkable for its extended HI ring hosting numerous intergalactic HII regions. We combined new ultraviolet (GALEX) observations with archival Halpha, 8 mu m (Spitzer Space Telescope) and HI (VLA B-array) images of the system. We have found that the morpholog…
We present new multi-wavelength observations of the dwarf Seyfert 1 galaxy POX 52 in order to investigate the properties of the host galaxy and the active nucleus, and to examine the mass of its black hole, previously estimated to be ~ 10^5 M_sun. Hubble Space Telescope ACS/HRC images show that the host galaxy has a dwarf elliptical morphology (M_I = -18.4 mag, Sersic index n = 4.3) with no detected disk component or spiral structure, confirming previous results from ground-based imaging. X-ray observations from both Chandra and XMM show strong (factor of 2) variability over timescales as shor…
We present far-ultraviolet (FUV) imaging of the Hubble Deep Field North (HDF-N) taken with the Solar Blind Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS/SBC) and the FUV MAMA detector of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The full WFPC2 deep field has been observed at 1600 Angstroms. We detect 134 galaxies and one star down to a limit of FUV_{AB} ~ 29. All sources have counterparts in the WFPC2 image. Redshifts (spectroscopic or photometric) for the detected sources are in the range 0<z<1. We find that the FUV galaxy number counts are higher t…
Aims. We use different tracers, such as Ha, ultraviolet (UV), and infrared (IR) emissions at various wavelengths, to study the dust and star-formation (SF) conditions throughout the disk of M33. Methods. We derive the radial distribution of dust, of the old and young stellar population using Spitzer and GALEX data, complemented by ground-based optical data and available surveys of atomic and molecular gas. We separate the contribution of discrete sources to the IR brightness from the diffuse emission. Results. At 8 and 24 um, discrete sources account for 40% of the IR emission in the innermost…
