We present the Submillimeter Array observation of the CO J=2-1 transition towards the northern galaxy, ARP 302N, of the early merging system, ARP 302. Our high angular resolution observation reveals the extended spatial distribution of the molecular gas in ARP 302N. We find that the molecular gas has a very asymmetric distribution with two strong concentrations on either side of the center together with a weaker one offset by about 8 kpc to the north. The molecular gas distribution is also found to be consistent with that from the hot dust as traced by the 24 micro continuum emission observed by the Spitzer. The line ratio of CO J=2-1/1-0 is found to vary strongly from about 0.7 near the galaxy center to 0.4 in the outer part of the galaxy. Excitation analysis suggests that the gas density is low, less than 10$^3$ cm$^{-3}$, over the entire galaxy. By fitting the SED of ARP 302N in the far infrared we obtain a dust temperature of $T\rm_d$=26-36 K and a dust mass of M$\rm _{dust}$=2.0--3.6$\times10^8$ M$\rm_\odot$. The spectral index of the radio continuum is around 0.9. The spatial distribution and spectral index of the radio continuum emission suggests that most of the radio continuum emission is synchrotron emission from the star forming regions at the nucleus and ARP302N-cm. The good spatial correspondance between the 3.6 cm radio continuum emission, the Spitzer 8 & 24 $μ$m data and the high resolution CO J=2-1 observation from the SMA shows that there is the asymmetrical star forming activities in ARP 302N.
We report velocity-resolved spectroscopy of infrared hydrogen recombination lines in the interacting region of the Antennae galaxies (NGC 4038/4039). It generally has been assumed that the active star formation found there is due to the interaction of the disks of the two galaxies and indeed two molecular cloud complexes, separated in velocity by $\sim$100 km s$^{-1}$, have been observed in the southern part of this region. Our measurements imply that the two cloud complexes are moving away from each other. This result poses interesting questions about the physical mechanisms leading to starbu…
We present $^{12}$CO(1-0) observations of the interacting galaxy system Arp 94, which contains the Seyfert galaxies NGC 3227 and NGC 3226 as well as the star-forming candidate dwarf galaxy J1023+1952. We mapped the CO distribution in J1023+1952 with the IRAM 30m telescope and found molecular gas across the entire extent of the neutral hydrogen cloud -- an area of about 9 by 6 kpc. The region where star formation (SF) takes place is restricted to a much smaller ($\sim$ 1.5 by 3 kpc) region in the south where the narrow line width of the CO shows that the molecular gas is dynamically cold. Neith…
We present new interferometric HI and CO (1-0) observations of the luminous infrared source, Arp 256. Arp 256 consists of two spiral galaxies in an early stage of merging, with a projected nuclear separation of 29 kpc (54") and an infrared luminosity of 2.0E11 L_sun. Despite the large separation of the galaxies' nuclei and mildly disrupted stellar components, the HI disks are found to be strongly disrupted, and the southern galaxy in Arp 256 shows an elevated star formation efficiency, which is consistent with a nuclear starburst. Both of these results run contrary to expectations, posing inte…
We investigate the atomic and molecular interstellar medium and star formation of NGC 275, the late-type spiral galaxy in Arp 140, which is interacting with NGC 274, an early-type system. The atomic gas (HI) observations reveal a tidal tail from NGC 275 which extends many optical radii beyond the interacting pair. The HI morphology implies a prograde encounter between the galaxy pair approximately 1.5 x 10**8 years ago. The Halpha emission from NGC 275 indicates clumpy irregular star-formation, clumpiness which is mirrored by the underlying mass distribution as traced by the Ks-band emission. …
(abridged) We report here a factor of 5.7 higher total CO flux in Arp~244 (the ``Antennae'' galaxies) than that previously accepted in the literature (thus a total molecular gas mass of 1.5x10$^{10}$ Msun), based on our fully sampled CO(1-0) observations at the NRAO 12m telescope. Our observations show that the molecular gas peaks predominately in the disk-disk overlap region between the nuclei, similar to the far-infrared (FIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) emission. The bulk of the molecular gas is forming into stars with a normal star formation efficiency (SFE) L_{IR}/M(H_2) \approx 4.2 Lsun/Msun,…
High resolution observations of 12CO (2.''3), 13CO (3.''9), and HCN (5.''4) J=1--0 in the galaxy merger Arp 299 (IC 694 and NGC 3690) show the line ratios vary dramatically across the system. The 12CO/13CO ratio is unusually large, 60 +- 15, at the IC 694 nucleus, where 12CO emission is very strong, and much smaller, 10 +- 3, in the southern extended disk of that galaxy. Elsewhere, the 12CO/13CO line ratio is 5-20, typical of spiral galaxies. The line ratio variation in the overlap between the two galaxies is smaller, ranging from 10 +- 3 in the east to 20 +- 4 in the west. The 12CO/HCN line r…
Arp102B is a nearby radio galaxy which displays the presence of double peaked Balmer emission lines. Sub-arcsec Keck mid-infrared imaging and Spitzer spectroscopy reveal a spatially compact mid-infrared source which displays tentative evidence for variability. The F$_ν\proptoν^{-1.2}$ spectral energy distribution is suggestive of an advection dominated accretion flow. The absence of dust features over the 5-40 micron range make it unlikely that thermal dust emission dominates the mid-infrared luminosity. We also detect the presence of molecular hydrogen in emission which is asymmetrically reds…
We present new high-resolution HI observations of the disk of the collisional infrared luminous (L$_{\rm IR}=2.2\times10^{11}$ L$_{\sun}$) galaxy NGC 1144, which reveal an apparent large-scale azimuthal and kinematic segregation of neutral hydrogen relative to the molecular gas distribution. Even among violently collisional galaxies, the CO/HI asymmetry in NGC 1144 is unusual, both in the inner regions, and in the outer disk. We suggest that we are observing Arp 118 at a special moment, shortly after a high-speed collision between NGC 1144 and its elliptical companion NGC 1143. HI emission wit…
We report single-dish multi-transition measurements of the 12^CO, HCN, and HCO^+ molecular line emission as well as HNC J=1-0 and HNCO in the two ultraluminous infra-red galaxies Arp220 and NGC6240. Using this new molecular line inventory, in conjunction with existing data in the literature, we compiled the most extensive molecular line data sets to date for such galaxies. The many rotational transitions, with their different excitation requirements, allow the study of the molecular gas over a wide range of different densities and temperatures with significant redundancy, and thus allow good c…
Colliding galaxies are excellent laboratories for studying galactic evolution and global star formation. Computer simulations of galaxy collisions, in which at least one galaxy has a significant gaseous component, show the production of density enhancements and shock waves in the interstellar medium. These high-density regions coincide with the locations of recent, large-scale star formation in observations of some real colliding galaxies. Thus, combined n-body/hydrodynamic computer simulations can be used to explore the history and conditions of star forming regions in colliding galaxies. The…
The Fabry-Perot scanning interferometer mounted on the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences is used to study the distribution and kinematics of ionized gas in the peculiar galaxy Arp 212 (NGC 7625, III Zw 102). Two kinematically distinct subsystems - the inner disk and outer emission filaments, are found within the optical radius of the galaxy. The first subsystem, at galactocentric distances r<3.5 kpc, rotates in the plane of the stellar disk. The inner part of the ionized-gas disk (r<1.5-2 kpc) exactly coincides with the previously known d…
Integral field optical spectroscopy with the INTEGRAL system has been used to investigate for the first time the two-dimensional kinematic and ionization properties of the extended, warm ionized gas in Arp 220 over an area of 28 kpc by 15 kpc. The structure of the ionized gas is divided into well identified regions associated with the X-ray emitting plumes and extended lobes. Changes in the ionization state of the gas along the major axis of the plumes are detected, in particular in the outer regions of the northwestern plume where the transition between the main stellar body of the galaxy and…
We present a detailed investigation of the X-ray and optical properties of the starburst-merger system Arp299 (NGC 3690, Mrk 171), with an emphasis on its spectacular gaseous nebula. We analyse \rosat and \asca X-ray data and optical spectra and narrow-band images. We suggest that the on-going galaxy collision has tidally-redistributed the ISM of the merging galaxies. The optical emission-line nebula results as this gas is photoionized by radiation that escapes from the starburst, and is shock-heated, accelerated, and pressurized by a `superwind' driven by the collective effect of the starburs…
In this paper we demonstrate for the first time the connection between the spatial and temporal progression of star formation and the changing locations of the very dense regions in the gas of a massive disk galaxy (NGC 1144) in the aftermath of its collision with a massive elliptical (NGC 1143). These two galaxies form the combined object Arp 118, a collisional ring galaxy system. The results of 3D, time-dependent, numerical simulations of the behavior of the gas, stars, and dark matter of a disk galaxy and the stars and dark matter in an elliptical during a collision are compared with multiw…
Arp220 is a nearby system in final stages of galaxy merger with powerful ongoing star-formation at and surrounding the two nuclei. Arp 220 was detected in HI absorption and OH Megamaser emission and later recognized as the nearest ultra-luminous infrared galaxy also showing powerful molecular and X-ray emissions. In this paper we review the available radio and mm-wave observational data of Arp 220 in order to obtain an integrated picture of the dense interstellar medium that forms the location of the powerful star-formation at the two nuclei.
We present new, high angular resolution (~0.22") MERLIN observations of neutral hydrogen (HI) absorption and 21-cm radio continuum emission across the central ~900 parsecs of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy, Arp220. Spatially resolved HI absorption is detected against the morphologically complex and extended 21-cm radio continuum emission, consistent with two counterrotating disks of neutral hydrogen, with a small bridge of gas connecting the two. We propose a merger model in which the two nuclei represent the galaxy cores which have survived the initial encounter and are now in the final st…
We have detected extremely wide (1100 km/s) CO(1-0) emission from NGC 1144, an interacting, luminous infrared galaxy that is the dominant component of the Arp 118 system. The observations show that NGC 1144 is one of the most CO luminous galaxies in the local universe, with a CO luminosity twice that of Arp 220. Maps with the IRAM interferometer show that the CO is not in or very near the Seyfert 2 nucleus, but in the 20 kpc diameter ring that extends halfway between NGC 1144 and the elliptical galaxy NGC 1143. The greatest gas concentration, with 40% of the CO luminosity, is in the southern p…
Propagating star formation in a collisional ring galaxy Arp10 is investigated by a complex approach, which includes the broad- and narrow-band photometry, long- slit spectroscopy, and scanning Fabry-Perot spectroscopy. The ionized gas velocity field obtained with best spatial resolution to date indicates a non- isotropic expansion of the outer ring with a maximum velocity 110km/s. Strong vertical and non-circular motions are also seen in the vicinity of the inner ring. Our kinematic data suggest that Arp10 has a small inclination i=22\degr and high total (luminous plus dark matter) mass of abo…
In this paper we present the results of a 20 ks high resolution Chandra X-ray observation of the peculiar galaxy pair NGC 3395/3396, a system at a very early stage of merging, and less evolved than the famous Antennae and Mice merging systems. Previously unpublished ROSAT HRI data are also presented. The point source population and the hot diffuse gas in this system are investigated, and compared with other merging galaxy pairs. 16 X-ray point sources are detected in Arp 270, 7 of which are classified as ULXs (Lx > 10^39 erg/s). From spectral fits and the age of the system it seems likely that…
We present observations of the distribution and kinematics of neutral and ionized gas in NGC 1144, a galaxy that forms part of the Arp 118 system. Ionized gas is present over a huge spread in velocity (1100 km/s) in the disk of NGC 1144, but HI emission is detected over only 1/3 of this velocity range, in an area that corresponds to the NW half of the disk. In the nuclear region of NGC 1144, a jump in velocity in the ionized gas component of 600 km/s is observed. Faint, narrow HI absorption lines are also detected against radio sources in the SE part of the disk of NGC 1144, which includes reg…
The ultraluminous infrared galaxy Arp 220 has been observed at 0.5" resolution in CO(2-1) and 1 mm continuum using the newly expanded Owens Valley Millimeter Array. The CO and continuum peaks at the double nuclei and the surrounding molecular gas disk are clearly resolved. We find steep velocity gradients across each nucleus (dV ~ 500 km/s within r= 0.3") whose directions are not aligned with each other and with that of the outer gas disk. We conclude that the double nuclei have their own gas disks (r ~ 100 pc). They are counterrotating with respect to each other and embedded in the outer gas …
We present new imaging and spectroscopic observations of the interacting system Arp 194 (= UGC 06945 = VV 126). The northern component (A194N) is a distorted spiral or ring galaxy likely disrupted by a collision or close encounter with a southern galaxy (A194S). There is evidence that a third galaxy with similar recession velocity is projected on A194N but its role is likely secondary. A194S is connected to A194N by a string of emission knots which motivates our interpretation that the former was the intruder. Three of the knots are easily discernible in B,R, and H-alpha images and are assumed…
We have imaged the kpc scale distribution of 12CO(J=1-0) emission in the ring galaxy Arp 143 (NGC 2444/5) using the OVRO millimeter array. We find two giant molecular complexes in the ring component (NGC 2445) and a bright central source. The ring complexes comprise 20-60% of the detected H_2 mass, depending on the relative I(CO)-N(H_2) for the ring & nucleus. Their individual H_2 masses and surface densities (S(H_2)) exceed typical spiral GMAs regardless of the conversion factor. Both are associated with a 6 kpc ridge of high S(HI) and massive star formation (MSF) activity. H-alpha imaging sh…
An on-going Arecibo line search between 1.1 and 10 GHz of the prototypical starburst/megamaser galaxy, Arp 220, has revealed a spectrum rich in molecular transitions. These include the ``pre-biotic'' molecules: methanimine (CH$_{2}$NH) in emission, three $v_{2}=1$ direct l-type absorption lines of HCN, and an absorption feature likely to be from either $^{18}$OH or formic acid (HCOOH). In addition, we report the detection of two, possibly three, transitions of $λ$4-cm excited OH not previously detected in Arp~220 which are seen in absorption, and a possible absorption feature from the 6.668-GH…
We present data probing the spatial and kinematical distribution of both the atomic (HI) and molecular (CO) gas in NGC 5218, the late-type barred spiral galaxy in the spiral-elliptical interacting pair, Arp 104. We consider these data in conjunction with far-infrared and radio continuum data, and N-body simulations, to study the galaxies interactions, and the star formation properties of NGC 5218. We use these data to assess the importance of the bar and tidal interaction on the evolution of NGC 5218, and the extent to which the tidal interaction may have been important in triggering the bar. …
We present results of Fabry-Perot and long-slit spectroscopy of the peculiar galaxy Arp 10. The ionized gas velocity field shows evidence for significant radial motions in both outer and inner galactic rings. Long-slit spectroscopy reveals gradients of age and metallicity of stellar population in agreement with the propagating nature of star formation in the galaxy. We present strong evidence that a small ``knot'' at 5 arcsec from the center of Arp 10 is its dwarf elliptic satellite, the most probable ``intruder'' responsible for triggering the expanding rings in Arp 10.
We present new observations with the IRAM Interferometer, in its longest-baseline configuration, of the CO(2-1) line and the 1.3mm dust radiation from the Arp 220 nuclear region. The dust source in the West nucleus has a size of 0.19 x 0.13 arcsec and a 1.3mm brightness temperature of 90K. This implies that the dust ring in the West nucleus has a high opacity, with tau = 1 at 1.1mm. Not only is the dust ring itself optically thick in the submm and far-IR, but it is surrounded by the previously-known, rapidly rotating molecular disk of size 0.5 arcsec that is also optically thick in the mid-IR.…
We present the first detection of a large quantity of molecular gas in the extended tail of an interacting galaxy. Using the NRAO 12m telescope, we have detected CO (1 - 0) at five locations in the eastern tail of the peculiar starburst galaxy NGC 2782. The CO velocities and narrow (FWHM = 50 km/s) line widths in these positions agree with those seen in HI, confirming that the molecular gas is indeed associated with the tail rather than the main disk. As noted previously, the gas in this tail has an apparent `counter-rotation' compared to gas in the core of the galaxy, probably because the tai…
We present new results for the molecular gas, dust emission and the ionized gas in J1023+1952, an HI rich intergalactic star-forming tidal dwarf galaxy candidate. It is located at the projected intersection of two faint stellar tidal streams wrapped around the interacting pair of galaxies NGC 3227/6 (Arp~94). Using the IRAM 30m telescope, emission from CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) was detected across the entire extent of the neutral hydrogen cloud associated with J1023+1952, a region of the size of 8.9$ x 5.9 kpc, as well as in the nuclear region and outer disk of NGC 3227. The molecular gas is found t…
We present VLA HI observations and UH88 deep optical B- and R-band observations of the IR luminous merger Arp 299 (= NGC 3690 + IC 694). These data reveal a gas-rich, optically faint tidal tail with a length of over 180 kpc. The size of this tidal feature necessitates an old interaction age for the merger (~750 Myr since first periapse), which is currently experiencing a very young star burst (~20 Myr). The observations reveal a most remarkable structure within the tidal tail: it appears to be composed of two parallel filaments separated by ~20 kpc. One of the filaments is gas rich with little…
We find that the HNC J=3-2 emission is brighter than the HCN 3-2 emission by factors of 1.5 to 2.3 in the ultraluminous mergers Arp220 and Mrk231 and the luminous IR galaxy NGC4418. We furthermore report the detection of HNC J=4-3 in Mrk231. Overluminous HNC emission is unexpected in warm molecular gas in ultraluminous galaxies since I(HNC)>I(HCN) is usually taken as a signature of cold (10 - 20 K) dark clouds. Since the molecular gas of the studied galaxies is warm (T_k > 40 K) we present two alternative explanations to the overluminous HNC: a) HNC excitation is affected by pumping of the rot…
Using published luminosity and molecular gas profiles of the late-stage mergers NGC 3921, NGC 7252 and Arp 220, we examine the expected luminosity profiles of the evolved merger remnants, especially in light of the massive CO complexes that are observed in their nuclei. For NGC 3921 and NGC 7252 we predict that the resulting luminosity profiles will be characterized by an r^{1/4} law. In view of previous optical work on these systems, it seems likely that they will evolve into normal ellipticals as regards their optical properties. Due to a much higher central molecular column density, Arp 220…
We present high spatial resolution 21 cm HI maps of the interacting galaxy pair NGC 7714/7715. We detect a massive (2 x 10**9 M(sun)) HI bridge connecting the galaxies that is parallel to but offset from the stellar bridge. A chain of HII regions traces the gaseous bridge, with H-alpha peaks near but not on the HI maxima. An HI tidal tail is also detected to the east of the smaller galaxy NGC 7715, similarly offset from a stellar tail. The strong partial stellar ring on the eastern side of NGC 7714 has no HI counterpart, but on the opposite side of NGC 7714 there is a 10**9 M(sun) HI loop 11 k…
New high resolution interferometer data of 10 IR ultraluminous galaxies shows the molecular gas is in rotating nuclear rings or disks with radii 300 to 800 pc. Most of the CO flux comes from a moderate-density, warm, intercloud medium rather than self-gravitating clouds. Gas masses of ~ 5 x 10^9 Msun, 5 times lower than the standard method are derived from a model of the molecular disks. The ratio of molecular gas to dynamical mass, is M_gas/M_dyn ~ 1/6 with a maximum ratio of gas to total mass surface density of 1/3. For the galaxies VIIZw31, Arp193, and IRAS 10565+24, there is good evidence …
(abridged) We present new N-body, hydrodynamical simulations of the interaction between the starburst galaxy NGC 7714 and its post-starburst companion NGC 7715, focusing on the formation of the collisional features, including: 1) the gas-rich star forming bridge, 2) the large gaseous loop (and stellar tails) to the west of the system, 3) the very extended HI tail to the west and north of NGC 7714, and 4) the partial stellar ring in NGC 7714. Our simulations confirm the results of earlier work that an off-center inclined collision between two disk galaxies is almost certainly responsible for th…
The luminous infrared galaxy Arp299 (IC694+NGC3690) is studied using optical integral field spectroscopy obtained with the INTEGRAL system, together with archival Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 and NICMOS images. The stellar and ionized gas morphology shows lambda-dependent variations due to the combined effects of the dust internal extinction, and the nature and spatial distribution of the different ionizing sources. The two-dimensional ionization maps have revealed an off-nuclear conical structure of about 4 kpc in length, characterized by high excitation conditions and a radial gradient in th…
Among the various phenomena observed in interacting galaxies is the ejection due to tidal forces of material into the intergalactic medium and its subsequent rearranging which can lead to the formation of self-gravitating tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs). We investigate this process with a detailed multiwavelength study of the interacting system Arp 245 (NGC 2992/3) and a numerical model of the collision. The system is observed at an early stage of the interaction, about 100 Myr after perigalacticon, though at a time when tidal tails have already developed. Our HI map shows prominent counterparts t…
The H3O+ molecule probes the oxygen chemistry and the ionization rate of dense circumnuclear gas in galaxies. In particular, recent H3O+ observations show variations in the cosmic-ray ionization rate by factors of $>$10 within our Galaxy. Using the JCMT, we have observed the 364 GHz line of p-H3O+ in the centers of M82 and Arp 220. In Arp 220, the line profile suggests that the emission originates in the Western nucleus. In M82, both the eastern molecular peak and the circumnuclear region contribute to the emission. The derived column densities, abundances, and H3O+ / H2O ratios indicate ioniz…
We present observations of radio recombination lines from the starburst galaxy Arp 220 at 1.4, 8.1, 84, 96 and 207 GHz (sensitive upper limit for the 1.4 GHz line and firm detections at the other frequencies), and the radio continuum spectrum between 330 MHz and 207 GHz. We show that a model with three components of ionized gas with different densities and area covering factors can consistently explain both RRL and continuum data. The total mass of ionized gas in the three components is 3 x 10^7 M_sun requiring 3 x 10^5 O5 stars with a total Lyman continuum production rate (NLyc) of 1.3 x 10^{…
Our current understanding of ultraluminous infrared galaxies suggest that they are recent galaxy mergers in which much of the gas in the former spiral disks, particularly that located at distances less than 5 kpc from each of the pre-merger nuclei, has fallen into a common center, triggering a huge starburst phenomenon. This large nuclear concentration of molecular gas has been detected by many groups, and estimates of molecular mass and density have been made. Not surprisingly, these estimates were found to be orders of magnitude larger than the corresponding values found in our Galaxy. In th…
Ultra Luminous Infra-Red Galaxies (ULIRGs) -- gas-rich mergers harboring the most extreme star-forming conditions encountered in the local Universe -- are thought to re-enact the galaxy formation processes we are only barely able to glimpse in the distant Universe. Combining new single-dish molecular line observations of 12CO, 13CO, HCO+, HCN, and CS towards the two ULIRGs Arp220 and NGC6240 with existing data in the literature, we have compiled the most extensive molecular line data-sets to date of such galaxies. The data allow us to put strong constraints on the properties of the dense star …
We report the first submillimeter interferometric observations of an ultraluminous infrared galaxy. We observed Arp220 in the CO J=3-2 line and 342GHz continuum with the single baseline CSO-JCMT interferometer consisting of the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO) and the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). Models were fit to the measured visibilities to constrain the structure of the source. The morphologies of the CO J=3-2 line and 342GHz continuum emission are similar to those seen in published maps at 230 and 110GHz. We clearly detect a binary source separated by about 1 arcsec in the…
We present MERLIN observations of the continuum (both 1.6 and 5 GHz) and OH maser emission towards Arp220. the correct spatial configuration of the various componnents of the galaxy is revealed. In the eastern component the masers are shown to be generally coincident with the larger scale continuum emission; in the west, the masers and continuum do not generally arise from the same location. A velocity gradient (0.32+/-0.03km/s/pc) is found in the eastern nuclear region in MERLIN scales; this gradient is three times smaller than seen in OH and implies that the OH gas lies inside the HI. A re-a…
We discuss the X-ray properties of the interacting system Arp 284, consisting of the active nuclear starburst galaxy NGC 7714 and its post-starburst companion NGC 7715. A morphological signature of the interaction, thought to have started <100 Myr ago, is an asymmetric stellar ring dominating the intensity profile of NGC 7714 in the inner disk (~ 2 exponential scale lengths). In agreement to previous Einstein-data our ROSAT PSPC exposure shows the X-ray emission of Arp 284 to be confined to NGC 7714. The bulk of the intrinsic X-ray luminosity in the ROSAT 0.1--2.4 keV band can be accounted for…
We used the Submillimeter Array (SMA) to image 860 micron continuum and CO(3-2) line emission in the ultraluminous merging galaxy Arp 220, achieving a resolution of 0.23" (80 pc) for the continuum and 0.33" (120 pc) for the line. The CO emission peaks around the two merger nuclei with a velocity signature of gas rotation around each nucleus, and is also detected in a kpc-size disk encompassing the binary nucleus. The dust continuum, in contrast, is mostly from the two nuclei. The beam-averaged brightness temperature of both line and continuum emission exceeds 50 K at and around the nuclei, rev…
We have mapped the neutral atomic gas (HI) in the three disk-disk merger systems NGC 520, Arp 220, and Arp 299. These systems differ from the majority of the mergers mapped in HI, in that their stellar and gaseous tidal features do not coincide. In particular, they exhibit large stellar tidal features with little if any accompanying neutral gas and large gas-rich tidal features with little if any accompanying starlight. On smaller scales, there are striking anti-correlations where the gaseous and stellar tidal features appear to cross. We explore several possible causes for these differences, …
We use long-slit spectra obtained with the 6-m telescope BTA (Russian Academy of Sciences) to investigate the history of star formation in the peculiar ring galaxy Arp 10. The radial distributions of quasi-Lick spectral indices are calculated from the observed spectra and are compared with the model spectra, the latter are generated using the Starburst99 population synthesis code. Our model includes an outward propagating density wave which triggers star formation in the gas disk, and an old stellar disk. The metallicity of both old and young stellar populations is a function of radius. We sho…
We present high angular resolution (0.7'') observations made with the Very Large Array (VLA) of the radio recombination line (RRL) H53alpha and radio continuum emission at 43 GHz from the ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) Arp 220. The 43 GHz continuum emission shows a compact structure (~2'') with two peaks separated by ~1'', the East (E) and West (W) components, that correspond to each galactic nucleus of the merger. The spectral indices for both the E and W components, using radio continuum images at 8.3 and 43 GHz are typical of synchrotron emission (alpha ~ -1.0). Our 43 GHz continuum …
We perform UBR imaging and optical spectroscopy of the interacting galaxy pair Arp 104, at z=0.0098. This consists of NGC5218, a disturbed Sb barred spiral with an inclined outer shell, the round spheroidal NGC5216, a connecting bridge of length 50 kpc and a curved plume. Neither galaxy shows emission lines. NGC5218 has strong Balmer lines and appears to have undergone a major starburst some 0.2 Gyr ago, triggered by the last close passage of the two galaxies. The galaxy is very red in its centre, suggesting it is dusty, but its outer regions, and the bridge connecting the two galaxies, have t…
Prominent Fe K line emission is detected at around 6.7 keV in the XMM-Newton spectrum of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy Arp220. The continuum emission in the 2.5-10 keV band is flat and a few other spectral features are suggested. The large EW of the Fe K line poses a problem with interpreting the hard X-ray emission as integrated X-ray binary emission. A thermal emission spectrum with a temperature of kT~7 keV modified by some absorption, which would be expected from an internally shocked hot bubble in a starburst region, can describe the spectrum. An ensemble of radio supernovae in a dens…
There is increasing evidence for the presence of blue super star clusters in the central regions of ultraluminous infrared galaxies like Arp 220. Ultraluminous galaxies are thought to be triggered by galaxy mergers, and it has often been argued that these super star clusters may form during violent collisions between gas clouds in the final phase of the mergers. We now investigate another set of models which differ from previous ones in that the formation of the super star clusters is linked directly to the very intense starburst occurring at the very center of the galaxy. Firstly we show that…
We made a multi-wavelength study of young massive star clusters (YSCs) in the interacting galaxy ARP 24, using the optical and ultraviolet images from Hubble Space Telescope (HST), Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and Galaxy Evolution Explorer; the mid-infrared images from Spitzer Space Telescope; and the narrow-band Ha image and optical spectra from the NAOC 2.16m telescope. Based on the HST images, we found that the brightest infrared knot in ARP 24 is associated with a complex of five young massive star clusters, within a region of ~ 0.95" radius (127pc) in size. The ages and masses of the star cl…
We have used the Submillimeter Array (SMA) to make the first interferometric observations (beam size ~1") of the 12CO J=6-5 line and 435 micron (690 GHz) continuum emission toward the central region of the nearby ULIRG Arp 220. These observations resolve the eastern and western nuclei from each other, in both the molecular line and dust continuum emission. At 435 micron, the peak intensity of the western nucleus is stronger than the eastern nucleus, and the difference in peak intensities is less than at longer wavelengths. Fitting a simple model to the dust emission observed between 1.3 mm and…
Using high spatial resolution Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys archival imaging observations of Arp 116, centred on the elliptical galaxy NGC 4649, we explore the novel technique of pixel-by-pixel analysis of the galaxy's colour-magnitude diagramme to search for any evidence of recent enhanced star formation due to the apparent tidal interaction with its spiral companion, NGC 4647. From a detailed analysis of the system's geometry, and based on additional circumstantial evidence from extant multi-wavelength observations, we conclude that, while there may be grounds for the ti…
We present a comprehensive study of the star-formation properties of the infrared luminous galaxy Arp299 (IC694 + NGC3690). The observations include HST/NICMOS imaging and MMT optical and near-infrared spectroscopy together with HST archival data. We correct the galaxy parameters for extinction and use the results as boundary conditions for evolutionary starburst models. These models and other arguments show that Arp 299 has been going through a broad variety of interaction-induced star formation for the last ~15 Myr. In addition to nuclear starbursts in the two colliding galaxies, there are n…
As part of our Spitzer Spirals, Bridges, and Tails project to help understand the effects of galaxy interactions on star formation, we analyze GALEX ultraviolet, SARA optical, and Spitzer infrared images of the interacting galaxy pair Arp 82 (NGC 2535/6) and compare to a numerical simulation of the interaction. We investigate the multiwavelength properties of several individual star forming complexes (clumps). Using optical and UV colors, EW(Halpha), and population synthesis models we constrain the ages of the clumps and find that the median clump age is about 12 Myr. The clumps have masses ra…
We present VLA \ion{H}{1} and optical spectra of the peculiar galaxy Arp~10. Originally believed to be an example of a classical colliding ring galaxy with multiple rings, the new observations show a large disturbed neutral hydrogen disk extending 2.7 times the radius of the bright optical ring. We also present evidence for optical shells or ripples in the outer isophotes of the galaxy reminiscent of the ripples seen in some early type systems. The small elliptical originally believed to be the companion is shown to be a background galaxy. The \ion{H}{1} disk consists of two main parts: a very…
We present H alpha observations of the isolated interacting galaxy pair NGC 5426/27 using the scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer PUMA. The velocity field, various kinematical parameters and rotation curve for each galaxy were derived. The FWHM map and the residual velocities map were also computed to study the role of non-circular motions of the gas. Most of these motions can be associated with the presence of spiral arms and structure such as central bars. We found a small bar-like structure in NGC 5426, a distorted velocity field for NGC 5427 and a bridge-like feature between both galaxies …
We have searched for molecular gas in the cD galaxy of a poor cluster of galaxies AWM7 using Nobeyama 45 m telescope. We do not detect CO emission in the galaxy. Our limit of molecular gas in the inner 7.5 kpc is M_H_2< 4 x 10^8 M_sun. We estimate the total mass of molecular gas left in the cD galaxy when the gas deposited by a cooling flow once becomes molecular gas and the molecular gas is continuously evaporated by the ambient hot gas. The observational limit of molecular gas requires f >~ 10^{-3}, where f is the ratio of the heat conduction rate to that of Spitzer. However, this contradict…
We report the discovery of the shocked molecular gas in the supernova remnant HB 21. We derive the physical parameters of the shocked gas from CO J=1-0 and J=2-1 line observations. We discuss the correlation of the shocked molecular gas with the previously detected, shocked atomic gas and the associated infrared emission.
