We present new results for the molecular gas, dust emission and the ionized gas in J1023+1952, an HI rich intergalactic star-forming tidal dwarf galaxy candidate. It is located at the projected intersection of two faint stellar tidal streams wrapped around the interacting pair of galaxies NGC 3227/6 (Arp~94). Using the IRAM 30m telescope, emission from CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) was detected across the entire extent of the neutral hydrogen cloud associated with J1023+1952, a region of the size of 8.9$ x 5.9 kpc, as well as in the nuclear region and outer disk of NGC 3227. The molecular gas is found to be abundant over the entire HI cloud, with H2-to-HI gas mass ratios between 0.5 and 1.7. New Spitzer mid-infrared observations at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0, 15 and 24mu show that young SF is restricted to the southern part of the cloud. Despite the relatively uniform H$_2$ and HI column density across the cloud, young SF occurs only where the velocity dispersion in the CO and HI is a factor of $\sim$two lower (FWHM of 30 - 70 \kms) than elsewhere in the cloud (FWHM of 80 - 120 \kms). Thus the kinematics of the gas, in addition to its column density, seems to be a crucial factor in triggering SF. Optical/infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and Halpha photometry confirm that all the knots are young, with a tentative age sequence from the south-west (oldest knots) to the north-east (youngest). Optical spectroscopy of the brightest SF region allowed us to determine the metallicity (12+log(O/H) = 8.6 +- 0.2) and the extinction ($A_B$=2.4). This shows that J1023+1952 is made from metal-enriched gas which is inconsistent with the hypothesis that it represents a pre-existing dwarf galaxy. Instead, it must be formed from recycled, metal-enrichd gas, expelled from NGC 3227 or NGC 3226 in a previous phase of the interaction.
We have re-analyzed the 6-12 micron ISO spectrum of the ultra-luminous infrared galaxy Arp220 with the conclusion that it is not consistent with that of a scaled up version of a typical starburst. Instead, both template fitting with spectra of the galaxies NGC4418 and M83 and with dust models suggest that it is best represented by combinations of a typical starburst component, exhibiting PAH emission features, and a heavily absorbed dust continuum which contributes ~40% of the 6-12 micron flux and likely dominates the luminosity. Of particular significance relative to previous studies of Arp22…
We present new observations with the IRAM Interferometer, in its longest-baseline configuration, of the CO(2-1) line and the 1.3mm dust radiation from the Arp 220 nuclear region. The dust source in the West nucleus has a size of 0.19 x 0.13 arcsec and a 1.3mm brightness temperature of 90K. This implies that the dust ring in the West nucleus has a high opacity, with tau = 1 at 1.1mm. Not only is the dust ring itself optically thick in the submm and far-IR, but it is surrounded by the previously-known, rapidly rotating molecular disk of size 0.5 arcsec that is also optically thick in the mid-IR.…
We present the Submillimeter Array observation of the CO J=2-1 transition towards the northern galaxy, ARP 302N, of the early merging system, ARP 302. Our high angular resolution observation reveals the extended spatial distribution of the molecular gas in ARP 302N. We find that the molecular gas has a very asymmetric distribution with two strong concentrations on either side of the center together with a weaker one offset by about 8 kpc to the north. The molecular gas distribution is also found to be consistent with that from the hot dust as traced by the 24 micro continuum emission observed …
We used the Submillimeter Array (SMA) to image 860 micron continuum and CO(3-2) line emission in the ultraluminous merging galaxy Arp 220, achieving a resolution of 0.23" (80 pc) for the continuum and 0.33" (120 pc) for the line. The CO emission peaks around the two merger nuclei with a velocity signature of gas rotation around each nucleus, and is also detected in a kpc-size disk encompassing the binary nucleus. The dust continuum, in contrast, is mostly from the two nuclei. The beam-averaged brightness temperature of both line and continuum emission exceeds 50 K at and around the nuclei, rev…
We present mid-infrared spectro-imaging (5 - 16 microns) observations of the infrared luminous interacting system Arp 299 (=Mrk171 =IC694+NGC3690) obtained with the ISOCAM instrument aboard ISO. Our observations show that nearly 40% of the total emission at 7 and 15 microns is diffuse, originating from the interacting disks of the galaxies. Moreover, they indicate the presence of large amounts of hot dust in the main infrared sources of the system and large extinctions toward the nuclei. While the observed spectra have an overall similar shape, mainly composed of Unidentified Infrared Bands (U…
Arp102B is a nearby radio galaxy which displays the presence of double peaked Balmer emission lines. Sub-arcsec Keck mid-infrared imaging and Spitzer spectroscopy reveal a spatially compact mid-infrared source which displays tentative evidence for variability. The F$_ν\proptoν^{-1.2}$ spectral energy distribution is suggestive of an advection dominated accretion flow. The absence of dust features over the 5-40 micron range make it unlikely that thermal dust emission dominates the mid-infrared luminosity. We also detect the presence of molecular hydrogen in emission which is asymmetrically reds…
We report high resolution imaging of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy Arp 220 at 1.1, 1.6, and 2.22 microns with NICMOS on the HST. The diffraction-limited images at 0.1--0.2 arcsecond resolution clearly resolve both nuclei of the merging galaxy system and reveal for the first time a number of luminous star clusters in the circumnuclear envelope. The morphologies of both nuclei are strongly affected by dust obscuration, even at 2.2 microns : the primary nucleus (west) presents a crescent shape, concave to the south and the secondary (eastern) nucleus is bifurcated by a dust lane with the sout…
We have used the Submillimeter Array (SMA) to make the first interferometric observations (beam size ~1") of the 12CO J=6-5 line and 435 micron (690 GHz) continuum emission toward the central region of the nearby ULIRG Arp 220. These observations resolve the eastern and western nuclei from each other, in both the molecular line and dust continuum emission. At 435 micron, the peak intensity of the western nucleus is stronger than the eastern nucleus, and the difference in peak intensities is less than at longer wavelengths. Fitting a simple model to the dust emission observed between 1.3 mm and…
We present Spitzer infrared imaging of the peculiar galaxy pair Arp 107, and compare with an optical H-alpha map and a numerical model of the interaction. The [3.6 micron] - [4.5 micron] colors of clumps in the galaxy do not vary around the ring-like primary spiral arm and are consistent with those of stars, thus these bands are dominated by starlight. In contrast, the [5.8 micron] - [8.0 micron] colors are consistent with those of interstellar dust, and vary by about 0.2 magnitudes around the ring/spiral, with redder colors associated with regions with stronger star formation as indicated by …
A multi-wavelength set of photometric data including UV (GALEX), optical, near-IR, infrared (Spitzer) and radio (VLA 20cm) images and spectroscopic observations are used to map the dust-obscured and unobscured star formation in the galaxy pair ARP 32. The system consists of an actively star-forming galaxy and another one with depressed star formation. The most active galaxy has disrupted morphology and different sites of star formation. Spectroscopic data show hints of nuclear activity in its core, intense star formation in limited regions of the galaxy as well as an underlying population of s…
We present optical spectra of the merging system Arp 220,taken with the William Herschel Telescope(WHT) on La Palma. These data were taken with the aim of investigating the evolution and star formation history of this object. Spectral synthesis modelling has been used to estimate the ages of the stellar populations found in the diffuse light sampled by the spectra. The data show a remarkable uniformity in the stellar populations across the full 65 arcsec covered by our slit positions, sampling the measurable extent of the galaxy. The results are consistent with a dominant intermediate-age stel…
We perform UBR imaging and optical spectroscopy of the interacting galaxy pair Arp 104, at z=0.0098. This consists of NGC5218, a disturbed Sb barred spiral with an inclined outer shell, the round spheroidal NGC5216, a connecting bridge of length 50 kpc and a curved plume. Neither galaxy shows emission lines. NGC5218 has strong Balmer lines and appears to have undergone a major starburst some 0.2 Gyr ago, triggered by the last close passage of the two galaxies. The galaxy is very red in its centre, suggesting it is dusty, but its outer regions, and the bridge connecting the two galaxies, have t…
We present observations of radio recombination lines from the starburst galaxy Arp 220 at 1.4, 8.1, 84, 96 and 207 GHz (sensitive upper limit for the 1.4 GHz line and firm detections at the other frequencies), and the radio continuum spectrum between 330 MHz and 207 GHz. We show that a model with three components of ionized gas with different densities and area covering factors can consistently explain both RRL and continuum data. The total mass of ionized gas in the three components is 3 x 10^7 M_sun requiring 3 x 10^5 O5 stars with a total Lyman continuum production rate (NLyc) of 1.3 x 10^{…
We present new data taken at 850 $μ$m with SCUBA at the JCMT for a sample of 19 luminous infrared galaxies. Fourteen galaxies were detected. We have used these data, together with fluxes at 25, 60 and 100 $μ$m from IRAS, to model the dust emission. We find that the emission from most galaxies can be described by an optically thin, single temperature dust model with an exponent of the dust extinction coefficient ($k_λ\propto λ^{-β}$) of $β\simeq 1.5 - 2$. A lower $β\simeq 1$ is required to model the dust emission from two of the galaxies, Arp 220 and NGC 4418. We discuss various possibilities f…
I report on the discovery of two faint (~ 26.8 Rmag/arcsec^2) tidal tails around the shell elliptical NGC 3656 (Arp 155). This galaxy had previously been interpreted as a case of accretion, or minor merger. The two tidal tails are inconsistent with a minor merger, and point instead to a disk-disk major merger origin. NGC 3656 extends Toomre's merger sequence toward normal elliptical galaxies, and hints at a major merger origin for shells and minor-axis dust lanes. A dwarf galaxy lies at the tip of one of the tidal tails. A prominent shell, which shows sharp azymuthal color discontinuities, bel…
Mid-infrared (MIR) imaging and spectroscopic observations are presented for a well defined sample of eight closely interacting (CLO) pairs of spiral galaxies that have overlapping disks and show enhanced far-infrared (FIR) emission. The goal is to study the star formation distribution in CLO pairs, with special emphasis on the role of 'overlap starbursts'. Observations were made with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) using the CAM and SWS instruments. The ISO~CAM maps, tracing the MIR emission of warm dust heated by young massive stars, are compared to new ground based H$α$ and R-band image…
We made a multi-wavelength study of young massive star clusters (YSCs) in the interacting galaxy ARP 24, using the optical and ultraviolet images from Hubble Space Telescope (HST), Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and Galaxy Evolution Explorer; the mid-infrared images from Spitzer Space Telescope; and the narrow-band Ha image and optical spectra from the NAOC 2.16m telescope. Based on the HST images, we found that the brightest infrared knot in ARP 24 is associated with a complex of five young massive star clusters, within a region of ~ 0.95" radius (127pc) in size. The ages and masses of the star cl…
We present new high-resolution HI observations of the disk of the collisional infrared luminous (L$_{\rm IR}=2.2\times10^{11}$ L$_{\sun}$) galaxy NGC 1144, which reveal an apparent large-scale azimuthal and kinematic segregation of neutral hydrogen relative to the molecular gas distribution. Even among violently collisional galaxies, the CO/HI asymmetry in NGC 1144 is unusual, both in the inner regions, and in the outer disk. We suggest that we are observing Arp 118 at a special moment, shortly after a high-speed collision between NGC 1144 and its elliptical companion NGC 1143. HI emission wit…
(abridged) We report here a factor of 5.7 higher total CO flux in Arp~244 (the ``Antennae'' galaxies) than that previously accepted in the literature (thus a total molecular gas mass of 1.5x10$^{10}$ Msun), based on our fully sampled CO(1-0) observations at the NRAO 12m telescope. Our observations show that the molecular gas peaks predominately in the disk-disk overlap region between the nuclei, similar to the far-infrared (FIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) emission. The bulk of the molecular gas is forming into stars with a normal star formation efficiency (SFE) L_{IR}/M(H_2) \approx 4.2 Lsun/Msun,…
We investigate expected sub-mm emission and dust properties of the Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) in the Hubble Deep Field (HDF). The SCUBA Deep Survey (Hughes et al., 1998) provides an upper limit of the 850 micron flux densities of the LBGs. With this constraint, we argue that a typical ultra-violet to far-infrared spectral shape of the high-redshift LBGs is rather close to a template spectrum of low-reddening starburst galaxies in the local universe but different from that of heavily dust-enshrouded ultra-luminous far-infrared galaxies like Arp220. We also evaluate the lower-limit temperature …
This is the second in a series of papers presenting results from the SCUBA Local Universe Galaxy Survey. In our first paper we provided 850 micron flux densities for 104 galaxies selected from the IRAS Bright Galaxy Sample and we found that the 60, 100 micron (IRAS) and 850 micron (SCUBA) fluxes could be adequately fitted by emission from dust at a single temperature. In this paper we present 450 micron data for the galaxies. With the new data, the spectral energy distributions of the galaxies can no longer be fitted with an isothermal dust model - two temperature components are now required. …
The luminous infrared galaxy Arp299 (IC694+NGC3690) is studied using optical integral field spectroscopy obtained with the INTEGRAL system, together with archival Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 and NICMOS images. The stellar and ionized gas morphology shows lambda-dependent variations due to the combined effects of the dust internal extinction, and the nature and spatial distribution of the different ionizing sources. The two-dimensional ionization maps have revealed an off-nuclear conical structure of about 4 kpc in length, characterized by high excitation conditions and a radial gradient in th…
Our current understanding of ultraluminous infrared galaxies suggest that they are recent galaxy mergers in which much of the gas in the former spiral disks, particularly that located at distances less than 5 kpc from each of the pre-merger nuclei, has fallen into a common center, triggering a huge starburst phenomenon. This large nuclear concentration of molecular gas has been detected by many groups, and estimates of molecular mass and density have been made. Not surprisingly, these estimates were found to be orders of magnitude larger than the corresponding values found in our Galaxy. In th…
We used the IRAM Interferometer to detect CO(3-2), CO(7-6), and 1.3 mm dust continuum emission from the submillimeter galaxy SMM J14011+0252 at a redshift of 2.6. Contrary to a recent claim that the CO was extended over 6.6 arcsec (57 kpc), the new data yield a size of 2 x 0.5 arcsec for the CO and the dust. Although previous results placed the CO peak in a region with no visible counterpart, the new maps show the CO and dust are centered on the J1 complex seen on K-band and optical images. We suggest the CO is gravitationally lensed not only by the foreground cluster A1835, but also by an ind…
A study of the gas content in 1038 interacting galaxies, essentially selected from Arp, Arp and Madore, Vorontsov-Velyaminov catalogues and some of the published literature, is presented here. The data on the interstellar medium have been extracted from a number of sources in the literature and compared with a sample of 1916 normal galaxies. The mean values for each of the different ISM tracers (FIR, 21 cm, CO lines, X-ray) have been estimated by means of survival analysis techniques, in order to take into account the presence of upper limits. From the data it appears that interacting galaxies…
We present photometric and spectroscopic data of the interacting starburst galaxy NGC 6052 obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The mid-infrared (MIR) spectra of the three brightest spatially resolved regions in the galaxy are remarkably similar and are consistent with dust emission from young nearly coeval stellar populations. Analysis of the brightest infrared region of the system, which contributes ~18.5 % of the total 16\micron flux, indicates that unlike similar off-nuclear infrared-bright regions found in Arp 299 or NGC 4038/9, its MIR spectrum is inconsistent with an enshrouded ho…
New high resolution interferometer data of 10 IR ultraluminous galaxies shows the molecular gas is in rotating nuclear rings or disks with radii 300 to 800 pc. Most of the CO flux comes from a moderate-density, warm, intercloud medium rather than self-gravitating clouds. Gas masses of ~ 5 x 10^9 Msun, 5 times lower than the standard method are derived from a model of the molecular disks. The ratio of molecular gas to dynamical mass, is M_gas/M_dyn ~ 1/6 with a maximum ratio of gas to total mass surface density of 1/3. For the galaxies VIIZw31, Arp193, and IRAS 10565+24, there is good evidence …
The gravitationally lensed Lyman-alpha emitting galaxy, HCM6A, detected by Hu et al. (2002) at z=6.56 behind the Abell 370 cluster was observed with the MAMBO-2 array of bolometers at 1.2mm wavelength. The galaxy was not detected down to 1.08 mJy (3 sigma), but the depth of the observations and the lens amplification allow us to improve by approximately one order of magnitude previously published upper limits on far infrared emission of Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies at this redshift. The following upper limits are derived from our observations assuming typical dust parameters: dust mass <5.3x1…
We report on 450- and 850-micron observations of the interacting galaxy pair, VV114E+W (IC1623), taken with the SCUBA camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, and near-infrared observations taken with UFTI on the UK Infrared Telescope. The system VV114 is in an early stage of a gas-rich merger. We detect submillimeter (sub-mm) emission extended over 30 arcsec (12 kpc) and find a good correlation between the spatial distribution of the sub-mm and CO emission. Both the CO and sub-mm emission peak near the reddest region of VV114E and extend toward VV114W. The bulk of the sub-mm emission resi…
We report the results of our CO J = 4 --> 3 line and rest frame 650 micron continuum observations of the z=0.93 hyperluminous infrared galaxy FSC 15307+3252 using the Owens Valley Millimeter Array. No line or continuum emission was detected, but the derived limits provide a useful constraint on the temperature, emissivity, and mass of the cold dust associated with FSC 15307+3252 and its molecular gas content. The 3 sigma upper limit on the velocity integrated CO (4-3) line flux is 1.6 Jy km/s (for 300 km/s line width). This corresponds to a surprisingly small total molecular gas mass limit of …
We combine the the stellar spectral synthesis code Starburst99, the nebular modelling code MAPPINGSIII, and a 1-D dynamical evolution model of HII regions around massive clusters of young stars to generate improved models of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of starburst galaxies. We introduce a compactness parameter, C, which characterizes the specific intensity of the radiation field at ionization fronts in HII regions, and which controls the shape of the far-IR dust re-emission, often referred to loosely as the dust ``temperature''. We also investigate the effect of metallicity on the …
We present a multifrequency dataset for an optically-selected, volume-limited, complete sample of 118 late-type galaxies (>= S0a) in the Virgo cluster. The database includes UV, visible, near-IR, mid-IR, far-IR, radio continuum photometric data as well as spectroscopic data of Halpha, CO and HI lines, homogeneously reduced, obtained from our own observations or compiled from the literature. Assuming the energy balance between the absorbed stellar light and that radiated in the IR by dust, we calibarte an empirical attenuation law suitable for correcting photometric and spectroscopic data of no…
We present evidence for the dramatically different morphology between the rest frame UV and 7micron mid-IR emission of VV114 and Arp299, two nearby (z~0) violently interacting infrared luminous galaxies (LIRGs). Nearly all LIRGs are interacting systems and it is currently accepted that they dominate the IR emission at z>1. Luminous IR galaxies located at z=1-2 could easily be detected as unresolved sources in deep optical/near-IR ground based surveys, as well as in upcoming 24micron surveys with the Space Infrared Telescope Facility. We demonstrate that the spatial resolution of these surveys …
Markarian (Mkn) 297 is a complex system with two interacting galaxies. Observations were made with ISO using ISOCAM, ISOPHOT and LWS. We present ISOCAM maps at 6.7, 7.7, 12 and 14.3 microns which, with PHT-S spectrometry of the central interacting region, probe the dust obscured star formation and dust properties. ISOCAM reveals that the strongest emission region in the four MIR bands is completely unremarkable at visible and near-IR (e.g. 2MASS) wavelengths, and does not coincide with the nuclear region of either colliding galaxy. It shares this striking characteristic with the overlap region…
We report new K-band, radio continuum, and CO (1-0) imaging observations and 850 micron photometric observations of PDS 456, the most luminous QSO in the local universe (z<0.3). The 0.6'' resolution K-band image obtained using the Keck telescope shows three compact K~16.5 (M(K)~ -21) sources at a projected distance of ~10 kpc to the southwest, and the host galaxy of PDS 456 may be interacting or merging with one or more companions. The observations using the OVRO millimeter array has revealed a narrow CO (1-0) line (FWHM = 181 km/s) centered at z=0.1849, and 9 x 10^9 solar mass of molecular ga…
We present our preliminary BIMA CO(1-0) images of II~Zw~96 which show huge molecular gas concentrations outside the merging disks. The dominant extra-disk CO concentrations in II~Zw~96 correspond to the two star-forming ``knots'' hidden by dust, whereas the others are associated with the two spiral disks. The unique huge CO concentrations, $\approxgt 5$ kpc away from the merging nuclei, account for $\approxgt 50 %$ of the total CO emission, yet only at a moderate gas surface density as compared with that of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs). We tentatively conclude that the huge extra-di…
Based on far-infrared spectroscopy of a small sample of nearby infrared-bright and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with the ISO Long Wavelength Spectrometer, we find a dramatic progression in ionic/atomic fine-structure emission line and molecular/atomic absorption line characteristics in these galaxies extending from strong [O III]52,88 and [N III]57 micron line emission to detection of only faint [C II]158 micron line emission from gas in photodissociation regions in the ULIRGs. The molecular absorption spectra show varying excitation as well, extending from galaxies in which the mo…
