Consider the two-way rate-distortion problem in which a helper sends a common limited-rate message to both users based on side information at its disposal. We characterize the region of achievable rates and distortions where a Markov form (Helper)-(User 1)-(User 2) holds. The main insight of the result is that in order to achieve the optimal rate, the helper may use a binning scheme, as in Wyner-Ziv, where the side information at the decoder is the "further" user, namely, User 2. We derive these regions explicitly for the Gaussian sources with square error distortion, analyze a trade-off between the rate from the helper and the rate from the source, and examine a special case where the helper has the freedom to send different messages, at different rates, to the encoder and the decoder.
We consider the one helper source coding problem posed and investigated by Ahlswede, Körner and Wyner. In this system, the error probability of decoding goes to one as the source block length $n$ goes to infinity. This implies that we have a strong converse theorem for the one helper source coding problem. In this paper we provide a much stronger version of this strong converse theorem for the one helper source coding problem. We prove that the error probability of decoding tends to one exponentially and derive an explicit lower bound of this exponent function.
We investigate the privacy of two approaches to (biometric) template protection: Helper Data Systems and Sparse Ternary Coding with Ambiguization. In particular, we focus on a privacy property that is often overlooked, namely how much leakage exists about one specific binary property of one component of the feature vector. This property is e.g. the sign or an indicator that a threshold is exceeded. We provide evidence that both approaches are able to protect such sensitive binary variables, and discuss how system parameters need to be set.
In this work, we investigate two source coding models, a \emph{Helper} problem and a \emph{Gray-Wyner} problem, under equivocation constraints. Specifically, in the Helper problem, an encoder communicates with a legitimate receiver through noise-free rate-limited public and private links; and an external passive eavesdropper intercepts every information that is sent on the public link. We study two classes of this model: i) when a pair of arbitrarily correlated discrete memoryless sources is to be encoded such that one component has to be recovered lossily at the legitimate receiver while the …
In a distributed storage systems (DSS) with $k$ systematic nodes, robustness against node failure is commonly provided by storing redundancy in a number of other nodes and performing repair mechanism to reproduce the content of the failed nodes. Efficiency is then achieved by minimizing the storage overhead and the amount of data transmission required for data reconstruction and repair, provided by coding solutions such as regenerating codes [1]. Common explicit regenerating code constructions enable efficient repair through accessing a predefined number, $d$, of arbitrary chosen available nod…
We study side-channel attacks for the Shannon cipher system. To pose side channel-attacks to the Shannon cipher system, we regard them as a signal estimation via encoded data from two distributed sensors. This can be formulated as the one helper source coding problem posed and investigated by Ahlswede, Körner(1975), and Wyner(1975). We further investigate the posed problem to derive new secrecy bounds. Our results are derived by a coupling of the result Watanabe and Oohama(2012) obtained on bounded storage evasdropper with the exponential strong converse theorem Oohama(2015) established for th…
Coded source compression, also known as source compression with helpers, has been a major variant of distributed source compression, but has hitherto received little attention in the quantum regime. This work treats and solves the corresponding quantum coded source compression through an observation that connects coded source compression with channel simulation. First, we consider classical source coding with quantum side information where the quantum side information is observed by a helper and sent to the decoder via a classical channel. We derive a single-letter characterization of the achi…
We study the decentralized caching scheme in a two-layer network, which includes a sever, multiple helpers, and multiple users. Basically, the proposed caching scheme consists of two phases, i.e, placement phase and delivery phase. In the placement phase, each helper/user randomly and independently selects contents from the server and stores them into its memory. In the delivery phase, the users request contents from the server, and the server satisfies each user through a helper. Different from the existing caching scheme, the proposed caching scheme takes into account the pre-stored contents…
We study the transmission of confidential messages across a wireless broadcast channel with K>2 receivers and K helpers. The goal is to transmit all messages reliably to their intended receivers while keeping them confidential from the unintended receivers. We design a codebook based on nested lattice structure, cooperative jamming, lattice alignment, and i.i.d. coding. Moreover, we exploit the asymmetric compute-and-forward decoding strategy to handle finite SNR regimes. Unlike previous alignment schemes, our achievable rates are attainable at any finite SNR value. Also, we show that our sche…
Caching popular contents at base stations (BSs) is a promising way to unleash the potential of cellular heterogeneous networks (HetNets), where backhaul has become a bottleneck. In this paper, we compare a cache-enabled HetNet where a tier of multi-antenna macro BSs is overlaid by a tier of helper nodes having caches but no backhaul with a conventional HetNet where the macro BSs tier is overlaid by a tier of pico BSs with limited-capacity backhaul. We resort stochastic geometry theory to derive the area spectral efficiencies (ASEs) of these two kinds of HetNets and obtain the closed-form expre…
This work considers the problem of multiterminal secret key agreement by limited total public discussion under the hypergraphical source model. The secrecy capacity as a function of the total discussion rate is completely characterized by a polynomial-time computable linear program. Compared to the existing solution for a particular hypergraphical source model called the pairwise independent network (PIN) model, the current result is a non-trivial extension as it applies to a strictly larger class of sources and a more general scenario involving helpers and wiretapper's side information. In pa…
We consider the following communication task in the multi-party setting, which involves a joint random variable $XYZMN$ with the property that $M$ is independent of $YZN$ conditioned on $X$ and $N$ is independent of $XZM$ conditioned on $Y$. Three parties Alice, Bob and Charlie, respectively, observe samples $x,y$ and $z$ from $XYZ$. Alice and Bob communicate messages to Charlie with the goal that Charlie can output a sample from $MN$ having correct correlation with $XYZ$. This task reflects the simultaneous message passing model of communication complexity. Furthermore, it is a generalization…
Biometric authentication systems, based on secret key generation, work as follows. In the enrollment stage, an individual provides a biometric signal that is mapped into a secret key and a helper message, the former being prepared to become available to the system at a later time (for authentication), and the latter is stored in a public database. When an authorized user requests authentication, claiming his/her identity as one of the subscribers, he/she has to provide a biometric signal again, and then the system, which retrieves also the helper message of the claimed subscriber, produces an …
An adaptive joint source-channel coding (JSCC) scheme is presented for transmitting correlated sources over discrete-memoryless two-way channels subject to distortion constraints. The proposed JSCC scheme makes use of the previously transmitted and received channel signals as well as the sources' correlation to facilitate coordination between terminals. It is shown that the adaptive scheme strictly subsumes prior lossy coding methods for two-way simultaneous transmission and yields a new adaptive separate source-channel coding result. Two examples are given to show the scheme's advantages.
A joint source-channel coding (JSCC) scheme based on hybrid digital/analog coding is proposed for the transmission of correlated sources over discrete-memoryless two-way channels (DM-TWCs). The scheme utilizes the correlation between the sources in generating channel inputs, thus enabling the users to coordinate their transmission to combat channel noise. The hybrid scheme also subsumes prior coding methods such as rate-one separate source-channel coding and uncoded schemes for two-way lossy transmission, as well as the correlation-preserving coding scheme for (almost) lossless transmission. M…
We propose an adaptive lossy joint source-channel coding (JSCC) scheme for sending correlated sources over two-terminal discrete-memoryless two-way channels (DM-TWCs). The main idea is to couple the independent operations of the terminals via an adaptive coding mechanism, which can mitigate cross-interference resulting from simultaneous channel transmissions and concurrently exploit the sources' correlation to reduce the end-to-end reconstruction distortions. Our adaptive JSCC scheme not only subsumes existing lossy coding methods for two-way simultaneous communication but also improves their …
We establish the rate region of an extended Gray-Wyner system for 2-DMS $(X,Y)$ with two additional decoders having complementary causal side information. This extension is interesting because in addition to the operationally significant extreme points of the Gray-Wyner rate region, which include Wyner's common information, G{á}cs-K{ö}rner common information and information bottleneck, the rate region for the extended system also includes the K{ö}rner graph entropy, the privacy funnel and excess functional information, as well as three new quantities of potential interest, as extreme points. T…
In this paper, we study a half-duplex two-way relay channel (TWRC) with correlated sources exchanging bidirectional information. In the case, when both sources have the knowledge of correlation statistics, a source compression with physical-layer network coding (SCPNC) scheme is proposed to perform the distributed compression at each source node. When only the relay has the knowledge of correlation statistics, we propose a relay compression with physical-layer network coding (RCPNC) scheme to compress the bidirectional messages at the relay. The closed-form block error rate (BLER) expressions …
An efficient analog network coding transmission protocol is proposed in this letter for a MIMO two way cellular network. Block signal alignment is first proposed to null the inter-user interference for multi-antenna users, which makes the dimensions of aligned space larger compared with the existing signal alignment. Two algorithms are developed to jointly design the precoding matrices at the relay and BS for outage optimization. Especially, the last algorithm is designed to maximize the effective channel gain to the effective noise gain ratio. The performance of this transmission protocol is …
In this paper, we adopt the relay selection (RS) protocol proposed by Bletsas, Khisti, Reed and Lippman (2006) with Enhanced Dynamic Decode-and-Forward (EDDF) and network coding (NC) system in a two-hop two-way multi-relay network. All nodes are single-input single-output (SISO) and half-duplex, i.e., they cannot transmit and receive data simultaneously. The outage probability is analyzed and we show comparisons of outage probability with various scenarios under Rayleigh fading channel. Our results show that the relay selection with EDDF and network coding (RS-EDDF&NC) scheme has the best perf…
Achievability and converse results for the lossy transmission of correlated sources over Shannon's two-way channels (TWCs) are presented. A joint source-channel coding theorem for independent sources and TWCs for which adaptation cannot enlarge the capacity region is also established. We further investigate the optimality of scalar coding for TWCs with discrete modulo additive noise as well as additive white Gaussian noise. Comparing the distortion of scalar coding with the derived bounds, we observe that scalar coding achieves the minimum distortion over both families of TWCs for independent …
This paper studies the transceiver design of the Gaussian two-pair two-way relay channel (TWRC), where two pairs of users exchange information through a common relay in a pairwise manner. Our main contribution is to show that the capacity of the Gaussian two-pair TWRC is achievable to within 1/2 bit for arbitrary channel conditions. In the proof, we develop a hybrid coding scheme involving Gaussian random coding, nested lattice coding, superposition coding, and network-coded decoding. Further, we present a message-reassembling strategy to decouple the coding design for the user-to-relay and re…
