Local spin and charge properties were studied on beta-Ag0.33V2O5, a pressure-induced superconductor, at ambient pressure using 51V-NMR and zero-field-resonance (ZFR) techniques. Three inequivalent Vi sites (i=1, 2, and 3) were identified from 51V-NMR spectra and the principal axes of the electric-field-gradient (EFG) tensor were determined in a metallic phase and the following charge-ordering phase. We found from the EFG analysis that the V1 sites are in a similar local environment to the V3 sites. This was also observed in ZFR spectra as pairs of signals closely located with each other. These results are well explained by a charge-sharing model where a 3d1 electron is shared within a rung in both V1-V3 and V2-V2 two-leg ladders.
We report 51V NMR experiments in the metallic phase of the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) conductor beta-Sr0.33V2O5. The Knight shift and the quadrupole splitting of all six vanadium sites were determined as a function of the direction of magnetic field perpendicular to the conducting b-axis. Magnetic properties of the three 1D structural units are remarkably heterogeneous. In particular, the V2 ladder unit shows pronounced charge disproportionation among the two (V2a and V2b) sites. At one of these sites, the absolute value of the Knight shift and 1/(T1T) increase steeply with decreasing temperat…
Co-oxides beta-Na0.5CoO2 and gamma-K0.5CoO2 have been prepared by the Na de-intercalation from alpha-NaCoO2 and by the floating-zone method, respectively. It has been found that successive phase transitions take place at temperatures Tc1 and Tc2 in both systems. The appearance of the internal magnetic field at Tc1 with decreasing temperature T indicates that the antiferromagnetic order exists at T < Tc1, as in gamma-Na0.5CoO2. For beta-Na0.5CoO2, the transition temperatures and the NMR parameters determined from the data taken for magnetically ordered state are similar to those of gamma-Na0.5C…
Beta-NMR has been used to study vortex lattice disorder near the surface of the high-Tc superconductor YBCO. The magnetic field distribution from the vortex lattice was detected by implanting a low energy beam of highly polarized 8Li into a thin overlayer of silver on optimally doped, twinned and detwinned YBCO samples. The resonance in Ag broadens significantly below the transition temperature Tc as expected from the emerging field lines of the vortex lattice in YBCO. However, the lineshape is more symmetric and the dependence on the applied magnetic field is much weaker than expected from an…
We report ^{13}C NMR spectra and nuclear spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 for a quasi-one-dimensional quarter-filled organic material (TMTTF)_{2}AsF_{6}, which undergoes charge ordering (T_{CO} = 102 K) and spin-Peierls phase transitions (T_{SP} = 14 K). The ratio of two 1/T_1 for the charge accepting and donating TMTTF sites which grows from T_{CO} finally saturates in approaching T_{SP}, indicating one spin correlation function even in the charge ordered state. Below T_{SP}, however, the doubly split NMR lines from inequivalently charged molecules merge into one line, originated from the v…
We report ^{17}O Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) results in the stripe ordered La_{1.8-x}Eu_{0.2}Sr_{x}CuO_4 system. Below a temperature T_q ~ 80K, the local electric field gradient (EFG) and the absolute intensity of the NMR signal of the planar O site exhibit a dramatic decrease. We interpret these results as microscopic evidence for a spatially inhomogeneous charge distribution, where the NMR signal from O sites in the domain walls of the spin density modulation are wiped out due to large hyperfine fields, and the remaining signal arises from the intervening Mott insulating regions.
We report combined magnetic susceptibility, dielectric constant, nuclear quadruple resonance (NQR) and zero-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on single crystals of multiferroics CuBr$_2$. High quality of the sample is demonstrated by the sharp magnetic and magnetic-driven ferroelectric transition at $T_N=T_C\approx$ 74~K. The zero-field $^{79}$Br and $^{81}$Br NMR are resolved below $T_N$. The spin-lattice relaxation rates reveal charge fluctuations when cooled below 60~K. Evidences of an increase of NMR linewidth, a reduction of dielectric constant, and an increase of magnet…
The possibility that strongly correlated many-electron systems may exhibit spin-charge separation has generated great excitement, particularly in the light of recent experiments on low dimensional conductors and high temperature superconductors. However, finding experimental support for this hypothesis has been made difficult by the fact that most commonly used probes couple simultaneously to spin and charge excitations. We argue that core hole photoemission (XPS)/nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) couple independently and in exactly comparable ways to the local charge/spin susceptibilities of t…
We have compared by $^{23}$Na NMR and magnetic susceptibility the magnetic properties of oriented powder samples of Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ compounds. The NMR spectra are found identical for various samples with nominal $0.50\leq x\leq 0.70,$ which establishes that the dominant phase has a single composition $x\approx 0.70$. Three Na sites are identified from their single valued quadrupole effects and magnetic shifts which implies a very definite order of the Na$^{+}$ ions and of the Co charges in the CoO$_{2}$ planes. The local susceptibility of the magnetic cobalt sites displays a large enhancemen…
The charge and orbital ordering in Pr_{0.5} Ca_{0.5} MnO_3 is studied for the first time by ^{17}O NMR. This local probe is sensitive to spin, charge and orbital correlations. Two transitions exist in this system: the charge and orbital ordering at T_{CO} = 225 K and the antiferromagnetic (AF) transition at T_N = 170 K. Both are clearly seen in the NMR spectra measured in a magnetic field of 7T. Above T_{CO} there exists only one NMR line with a large isotropic shift, whose temperature dependence is in accordance with the presence of ferromagnetic (FM) correlations. This line splits into two p…
A theory for anomalous enhancement of NMR relaxation rate $1/T_{1}T$ of $^{125}$Te toward zero temperature observed in Pb$_{1-x}$Tl$_{x}$Te ($x$=0.01) is presented on the idea of the charge Kondo effect of valence skipping element Tl. It is found that such enhancement in $1/T_{1}T$ is caused through enhancement of the pair-hopping and inter-orbital interactions between 6s electrons localized on Tl site and conduction electrons doped in the hole band the semiconductor PbTe, which is the heart of the charge Kondo effect. It is also found that the Knight shift is not influenced in the temperature…
We present a detailed local probe study of the magnetic order in the oxychalcogenide La2O2Fe2OSe2 utilizing 57Fe Moessbauer, 139La NMR, and muon spin relaxation spectroscopy. This system can be regarded as an insulating reference system of the Fe arsenide and chalcogenide superconductors. From the combination of the local probe techniques we identify a non-collinear magnetic structure similar to Sr2F2Fe2OS2. The analysis of the magnetic order parameter yields an ordering temperature TN = 90.1 K and a critical exponent of beta = 0.133, which is close to the 2D Ising universality class as report…
Detailed $^{195}$Pt- and $^{171}$Yb nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies on the heterogeneous mixed valence system YbPtGe$_2$ are reported. The temperature dependence of the $^{195}$Pt-NMR shift $^{195}K(T)$ indicates the opening of an unusual magnetic gap below 200\,K. $^{195}K(T)$ was analyzed by a thermal activation model which yields an isotropic gap $Δ/k_B \approx 200$\,K. In contrast, the spin-lattice relaxation rate $^{195}$($1/T_1$) does not provide evidence for the gap. Therefore, an intermediate-valence picture is proposed while a Kondo-insulator scenario can be excluded. Moreove…

Hole doped transition metal oxides are famous due to their extraordinary charge transport properties, such as high temperature superconductivity (cuprates) and colossal magnetoresistance (manganites). Astonishing, the mother system of these compounds is a Mott insulator, whereas important role in the establishment of the metallic or superconducting state is played by the way that holes are self-organized with doping. Experiments have shown that by adding holes the insulating phase breaks into antiferromagnetic (AFM) regions, which are separated by hole rich clumps (stripes) with a rapid change…
We successfully isolated the $^{17}$O NMR signals at the planar sites in La$_{1.885}$Sr$_{0.115}$CuO$_4$ ($T_{c}=30$ K) by applying an external magnetic field along the Cu-O-Cu bond direction of a single crystal. We demonstrate that charge order enhances incommensurate Cu spin fluctuations below $T_{charge} \simeq 80$ K.
The presence of charge and spin stripe order in the La2CuO4-based family of superconductors continues to lead to new insight on the unusual ground state properties of high Tc cuprates. Soon after the discovery of charge stripe order at T(charge)=65K in Nd3+ co-doped LSCO ($T_{c}\simeq6$~K) [Tranquada et al., Nature {\bf 375} (1995) 561], Hunt et al. demonstrated that La$_{1.48}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ and superconducting LSCO with x~1/8 (Tc ~ 30K) share nearly identical NMR anomalies near $T_{charge}$ of the former [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 82} (1999) 4300]. Their inevitable conclusion that …
Charge and spin ordering in La2NiO4.17 has been studied by 139La NMR using the field and temperature dependence of the linewidth and relaxation rates. The stripes are site centered and the domain spins freeze at ~ 180 K, followed by a second transition at ~ 50 K, where the spins on the domain walls freeze. Although consistent with the neutron measurements, the results are quantitatively different from the NMR results in a nickelate with quenched Sr disorder.
The spin excitations from the nonmagnetic charge-ordered insulating state of $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ at ambient pressure have been investigated by probing the static and low-frequency dynamic spin susceptibilities via site-selective nuclear magnetic resonance at $^{13}$C sites. The site-dependent values of the shift and the spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ below the charge-ordering transition temperature ($T_{CO} \approx$ 135 K) demonstrate a spin density imbalance in the unit cell, in accord with the charge-density ratio reported earlier. The shift and $1/T_1$ show activated temperature d…
In this communication we consider the doping dependence of the strong antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the cuprate superconductors. We investigate the effect of an incommensurate magnetic response, as recently observed in inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments on several YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x} compounds, on the spin-lattice and spin-echo relaxation rates measured in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments. We conclude that a consistent theoretical description of INS and NMR can be reached if one assumes spatially inhomogeneous but locally commensurate spin correlations and that NM…
By Cu NMR we studied the spin and charge structure in Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4-delta}. For x=0.15, starting from a superconducting sample, the low temperature magnetic order in the sample reoxygenated under 1 bar oxygen at 900^0 C, reveals a peculiar modulation of the internal field, indicative for a phase characterized by large charge droplets ('Blob'-phase). By prolonged reoxygenation at 4 bar the blobs brake up and the spin structure changes to that of an ordered antiferromagnet (AF). We conclude that the superconductivity in the n-type systems competes with a genuine type I Mott-insulating sta…
The CoO$_{2}$ layers in sodium-cobaltates Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ may be viewed as a spin $S=1/2$ triangular-lattice doped with charge carriers. The underlying physics of the cobaltates is very similar to that of the high $T_{c}$ cuprates. We will present unequivocal $^{59}$Co NMR evidence that below $T_{CO}\sim51 K$, the insulating ground state of the itinerant antiferromagnet Na$_{0.5}$CoO$_{2}$ ($T_{N}\sim 86 K$) is induced by charge ordering.
Using a mix of numerical and analytic methods, we show that recent NMR $^{17}$O measurements provide detailed information about the structure of the charge-density wave (CDW) phase in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$. We perform Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) calculations of both the local density of states and the orbitally resolved charge density, which are closely related to the magnetic and electric quadrupole contributions to the NMR spectrum, using a microscopic model that was shown previously to agree closely with x-ray experiments. The BdG results reproduce qualitative features of the exp…
We report a first experimental evidence that a vortex in the high temperature superconductors (HTSC) traps a finite electric charge from the high resolution measurements of the nuclear quadrupole frequencies. In slightly overdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_7 the vortex is negatively charged by trapping electrons, while in underdoped YBa_2Cu_4O_8 it is positively charged by expelling electrons. The sign of the trapped charge is opposite to the sign predicted by the conventional BCS theory. Moreover, in both materials, the deviation of the magnitude of the charge from the theory is also significant. These unex…
We report $^{139}$La and $^{63}$Cu NMR investigation of the successive charge order, spin order, and superconducting transitions in super-oxygenated La$_2$CuO$_{4+y}$ single crystal with stage-4 excess oxygen order at $T_{stage}\simeq 290$ K. We show that the stage-4 order induces tilting of CuO$_6$ octahedra below $T_{stage}$, which in turn causes $^{139}$La NMR line broadening. The structural distortion continues to develop far below $T_{stage}$, and completes at $T_{charge}\simeq 60$ K, where charge order sets in. This sequence is reminiscent of the the charge order transition in Nd co-dope…
We use single crystal $^{63}$Cu NMR techniques to revisit the early $^{63}$Cu NQR signature of charge order observed for La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$ ($T_{\text{c}} =4$~K) [A. W. Hunt et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 82}, 4300 (1999)]. We show that the growth of spin correlations is accelerated below $\sim 80$~K, where the inverse Laplace transform (ILT) T$_{1}$ analysis of the $^{139}$La NMR spin-lattice relaxation curve recently uncovered emergence of the slow components in the lattice and/or charge fluctuations [P. M. Singer et al., {\bf 101}, 174508 (2020)]. From the accurate measurement…
We present a detailed NMR study of the insulator to metal transition induced by an applied pressure $p$ in the A15 phase of Cs$_{3}$C$_{60}$. We evidence that the insulating antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting (SC) phases only coexist in a narrow $p$ range. At fixed $p$, in the metallic state above the SC transition $T_c$, the $^{133}$Cs and $^{13}$C NMR spin lattice relaxation data are seemingly governed by a pseudogap like feature. We prove that this feature, also seen in the $^{133}$Cs NMR shift data is rather a signature of the Mott transition, which broadens and smears out progress…
We report nuclear magnetic resonance studies on the beta-pyrochlore oxide superconductor KOs2O6. The nuclear relaxation at the K sites is entirely caused by fluctuations of electric field gradient, which we ascribe to highly anharmonic low frequency oscillation (rattling) of K ions. A phenomenological analysis shows a crossover from overdamped to underdamped behavior of the rattling phonons with decreasing temperature and its sudden sharpening below the superconducting transition temperature Tc. Absence of the Hebel-Slichter peak in the relaxation rate at the O sites below Tc also indicates st…
NMR measurements of the ^{17}O nuclear quadrupole interactions, ^{17}ν_{Q}, show that the charge environment of the S=1/2 Cu_{2}O_{3} two-leg spin-ladder layer of hole-doped A_{14}Cu_{24}O_{41} changes dramatically above a certain temperature, T*. This temperature, T*, decreases with additional doping and is correlated with the magnetic crossover from the spin gap regime to the paramagnetic regime. We demonstrate that these changes in ^{17}ν_{Q} are consistent with an increase in the effective hole concentration in the Cu_{2}O_{3} two-leg ladder above T*. The effective hole concentration incre…
The effect of hydrostatic pressure (P) on charge density waves (CDW) in YBa2Cu3Oy has recently been controversial. Using NMR, we find that both the short-range CDW in the normal state and the long-range CDW in high fields are, at most, slightly weakened at P=1.9 GPa. This result is in contradiction with x-ray scattering results finding complete suppression of the CDW at ~1 GPa and we discuss possible explanations of this discrepancy. Quantitative analysis, however, shows that the NMR data is not inconsistent with a disappearance of the CDW on a larger pressure scale, typically ~10-20 GPa. We a…
23Na NMR spectrum measurements in alpha'-NaV2O5 with a single- crystalline sample are reported. In the charge-ordered phase, the number of inequivalent Na sites observed is more than that expected from the low-temperature structures of space group Fmm2 reported so far. This disagreement indicates that the real structure including both atomic displacement and charge disproportionation is of lower symmetry. It is suggested that zigzag ordering is the most probable. The temperature variation of the NMR spectra near the transition temperature is incompatible with that of second-order transitions. …
31^P NMR spectral features in polycrystalline SmCoPO reveal an axially symmetric local magnetic field. At low temperature, the anisotropy of the internal magnetic field increases rapidly, with K_ab increasing faster than that of K_c. The dominant contribution to this anisotropy arises from Sm-4f electron contribution over that of Co-3d. The intrinsic width 2*(Beta) deviates from linearity with respect to bulk susceptibility below 170 K due to the enhancement of (1/T_2)dynamic, which along with the continuous increase of anisotropy in the internal magnetic field is responsible for the wipe out …
Temperature dependent optical spectra are reported for beta-Na0.33V2O5. The sodium ordering transition at T_Na = 240 K, and in particular the charge ordering transition at T_MI = 136 K strongly influence the optical spectra. The metal-insulator transition at \tmi leads to the opening of a psuedogap (\hbarω= 1700 cm-1), and to the appearance of a large number of optical phonons. These observations, and the presence of a mid-infrared band (typical for low dimensional metals) strongly suggests that the charge carriers in beta-Na0.33V2O5 are small polarons.
Polarized Raman and optical spectra for the quasi one-dimensional metallic vanadate beta-Na0.33V2O3 are reported for various temperatures. The spectra are discussed in the light of the sodium and charge ordering transitions occurring in this material, and demonstrate the presence of strong electron phonon coupling.
Single crystals of pristine and 6% Pd-intercalated 2H-TaSe$_2$ have been studied by means of $^{77}$Se nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The temperature dependence of the $^{77}$Se spectrum, with an unexpected line narrowing upon Pd intercalation, unravels the presence of correlated local lattice distortions far above the transition temperature of the charge density wave (CDW) order, thereby supporting a strong-coupling CDW mechanism in 2H-TaSe$_2$. While, the Knight shift data suggest that the incommensurate CDW transition involves a partial Fermi surface gap opening. As for spin dynamics, th…
Co and Na NMR are used to probe the local susceptibility and charge state of the two Co sites of the Na-ordered orthorhombic Na0.5CoO2. Above T_N=86K, both sites display a similar T-dependence of the spin shift, suggesting that there is no charge segregation into Co3+ and Co4+ sites. Below T_N, the magnetic long range commensurate order found is only slightly affected by the metal-insulator transition (MIT) at T_MIT=51K. Furthermore, the electric field gradient at the Co site does not change at these transitions, indicating the absence of charge ordering. All these observations can be explaine…
A 63Cu and 139La NMR/NQR study of superconducting (Tc=7 K) La1.94Sr0.06CuO4 single crystal is reported. Coexistence of spin-glass and superconducting phases is found below ~5 K from 139La NMR relaxation. 63Cu and 139La NMR spectra show that, upon cooling, CuO2 planes progressively separate into two magnetic phases, one of them having enhanced antiferromagnetic correlations. These results establish the AF-cluster nature of the spin-glass. We discuss how this phase can be related to the microsegregation of mobile holes and to the possible pinning of charge-stripes.
Polarized Raman spectra of the calcium vanadium oxide bronze beta-Ca0.33V2O5 are measured in the temperature range between 300 K and 20 K. The charge ordering phase transition at about 150 K is characterized by the appearance of the new Raman-active modes in the spectra, and by anomalies in the electronic background scattering. The high temperature Raman scattering spectra of beta-Ca0.33V2O5 are in apparent resemblance with those of alpha'-NaV2O5, which suggests that there is a similar charge-phonon dynamics in both compounds. The study of dynamical properties and the symmetry analysis of the …
The new Kondo material YbIr$_3$Si$_7$, similar to other Kondo insulators, has been reported to exhibit charge-neutral fermionic excitations through measurements of specific heat and thermal conductivity at low temperatures. We performed $^{29}$Si-NMR on YbIr$_3$Si$_7$ to investigate the magnetic response of charge-neutral fermions from a microscopic perspective. In low magnetic fields parallel to the $c$ axis, a single NMR peak in the paramagnetic state splits into three peaks below $T_{\rm N}$. In contrast, only a slight shift of the single NMR peak was observed in high magnetic fields. This …
The pseudogap regime of high-temperature cuprates harbours diverse manifestations of electronic ordering whose exact nature and universality remain debated. Here, we show that the short-ranged charge order recently reported in the normal state of YBa2Cu3Oy corresponds to a truly static modulation of the charge density. We also show that this modulation impacts on most electronic properties, that it appears jointly with intra-unit-cell nematic, but not magnetic, order, and that it exhibits differences with the charge density wave observed at lower temperatures in high magnetic fields. These obs…
The results of 13C NMR spectra and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 for the quasi-one-dimensional quarter-filled organic material (TMTTF)2SCN are presented. A new inhomogeneous line appears below the anion ordering temperature (T_AO), below which the intensity of the distinct line owing to the inner carbon site from the inversion center is halved. This indicates that the charge transfer (disproportionation) occurs from one inner carbon site to the other inner site exclusively within one unit cell triggered by anion ordering. The 1/T_1 for the charge-donating inner site shows activate…
A $^{13}$C NMR study of the normal and superconducting states of the all-organic charge-transfer salt $β"$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$SF$_5$CH$_2$CF$_2$SO$_3$ is presented. We find that the normal state is a charge-ordered metal configured as vertical stripes, produced by a combination of 1/4-filling, correlations, and a polar counterion sublattice. The NMR properties associated with the superconducting state are consistent with gap nodes and singlet pairing, and therefore similar to other organic superconductors. Quite distinct, however, is the absence of evidence for low-energy antiferromagnetic spin flu…
The static and dynamic properties of V^{4+} spins (S = 1/2) in the frustrated square lattice compound Pb2(VO)(PO4)2 were investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility chi and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shift (K) and 31P nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 measurements on a single crystal. This compound exhibits long-range antiferromagnetic order below TN \simeq 3.65 K. NMR spectra above TN show two distinct lines corresponding to two inequivalent P sites present in the crystal structure. The observed asymmetry in hyperfine coupling constant for the in-plane (P1) P site direc…
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of CuO chains of detwinned Ortho-II YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.5}$ (YBCO6.5) single crystals reveal unusual and remarkable properties. The chain Cu resonance broadens significantly, but gradually, on cooling from room temperature. The lineshape and its temperature dependence are substantially different from that of a conventional spin/charge density wave (S/CDW) phase transition. Instead, the line broadening is attributed to small amplitude static spin and charge density oscillations with spatially varying amplitudes connected with the ends of the finite l…
Magnetic properties in the quasi-one-dimensional organic salt (TMTTF)2SbF6 are investigated by 13C NMR under pressures. Antiferromagnetic phase transition at ambient pressure (AFI) is confirmed. Charge-ordering is suppressed by pressure and is not observed under 8 kbar. For 5 < P < 20 kbar, a sharp spectrum and the rapid decrease of the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 were observed below about 4 K, attributed to a spin-gap transition. Above 20 kbar, extremely broadened spectrum and critical increase of 1/T1 were observed. This indicates that the system enters into another antiferromagnetic p…
We report a complete set of $^{59}$Co NMR data taken on the $x=2/3$ phase of sodium cobaltates Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$, for which we have formerly established the in plane Na ordering and its three dimensional stacking from a combination of symmetry arguments taken from Na and Co NQR/NMR data. Here we resolve all the parameters of the Zeeman and quadrupolar Hamiltonians for all cobalt sites in the unit cell and report the temperature dependencies of the NMR shift and spin lattice relaxation $T_{1}$ data for these sites. We confirm that three non-magnetic Co$^{3+}$ (Co1) are in axially symmetric posi…
We present a $^{209}$Bi and $^{17}$O NMR study of the Mn electron spin correlations developed in the charge ordered state of Bi$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ and Bi$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$. The unusually large local magnetic field $^{209}H_{loc}$ indicates the dominant $6s^{2}$ character of the lone electron pair of Bi$^{3+}$-ions in both compounds. The mechanism connecting the $s$ character of the lone pairs to the high temperature of charge ordering $T_{CO}$ is still not clarified. The observed difference in $^{209}H_{loc}$ for Bi$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ to Bi$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ i…
$^{59}$Co NMR spectra in oriented powders of Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}$ and in its hydrated superconducting phase (HSC) Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}$,1.3H$_{2}$O reveal a single electronic Co state with identical $T$ independent NMR shift tensor. These phases differ markedly from Na$_{0.7}$CoO$_{2}$, in which we resolve 3 types of Co sites. The large T variation of their spin susceptibilities $χ^{s}$ and the anisotropy of the orbital susceptibility $χ^{orb}$ allow us to conclude that charge disproportionation occurs, in a non magnetic Co$^{3+}$ and two magnetic sites with about 0.3 and 0.7 holes in the $t_{2…
We have investigated the origin of the large increase in spin-echo decay rates for the $^{77}$Se nuclear spins at temperatures near to $T=30K$ in the organic superconductor (TMTSF)$_2$ClO$_4$. The measured angular dependence of $T_2^{-1}$ demonstrates that the source of the spin-echo decays lies with carrier density fluctuations rather than fluctuations in TMTSF molecular orientation. The very long time scales are directly associated with the dynamics of the anion ordering occurring at $T=25K$, and the inhomogeneously broadened spectra at lower temperatures result from finite domain sizes. Our…
Time-resolved optical measurements give information on the quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in YBCO, from which the evolution of the gap with doping and temperature can be systematically deduced. In this paper these optical charge-channel `pseudogap' data are compared with the `pseudogap' obtained from the NMR Knight shift Ks, spin polarized neutron scattering (SPNS) and single particle tunneling measurements. A simple energy level diagram is proposed to explain the different `gap' magnitudes observed by different spectroscopies in Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O7-y, whereby the spin gap Delta_s in NMR and SP…
$^{139}$La- and $^{55}$Mn-NMR spectra demonstrate that the ground state of the A-site ordered perovskite manganite LaBaMn$_2$O$_6$ is a spatial mixture of the ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFI(CE)) regions, which are assigned to the metallic and the insulating charge ordered state, respectively. This exotic coexisting state appears below 200 K via a first-order-like formation of the AFI(CE) state inside the FM one. Mn spin-spin relaxation rate indicates that the FM region coexisting with the AFI(CE) one in LaBaMn$_2$O$_6$ is identical to the bulk FM phase of the disordered form La$…
We have synthesized and characterized different stable phases of sodium cobaltates Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ with sodium content $0.65<x<0.80$. We demonstrate that $^{23}$Na NMR allows to determine the difference in the susceptibility of the phases and reveals the presence of Na order in each phase. $^{59}$Co NMR experiments give clear evidence that Co charge disproportionation is a dominant feature of Na cobaltates. Only a small fraction ($\approx$ 25%) of cobalts are in a non-magnetic Co$^{3+}$ charge state whereas electrons delocalize on the other cobalts. The magnetic and charge properties of the …
Na0.5CoO2 exhibits a metal-insulator transition at 53 K upon cooling. The nature of another transition at 88 K has not been fully clarified yet. We report the results of measurements of the electrical conductivity, the magnetic susceptibility and 23Na NMR on a powder sample of Na0.5CoO2, including the mapping of NMR spectra, as well as probing the spin-lattice relaxation rate and the spin-spin relaxation rate, in the temperature range between 30 K and 305 K. The NMR data reflect the transition at T_X very well but provide less evidence for the metal-insulator transition at T_MI. The temperatur…
The spin-liquid candidate $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ [ET: bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene] does not exhibit magnetic ordering down to a very low temperature, but shows a mysterious anomaly at 6 K. The origin of the so-called 6 K anomaly is still under debate. We carried out nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on the copper sites of the insulating layers, which are sensitive to the charge dynamics unlike the conventional spin-1/2 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The main finding of this study is that the observation of a sharp peak behavior in the nuclear spin-lattice relaxat…
We present an investigation of the near-surface tetragonal phase transition in SrTiO3, using the complementary techniques of beta-detected nuclear magnetic resonance and grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction. The results show a clear depth dependence of the phase transition on scales of a few microns. The measurements support a model in which there are tetragonal domains forming in the sample at temperatures much higher than the bulk phase transition temperature. Moreover, we find that these domains tend to form at higher temperatures preferentially near the free surface of the crystal. The deta…
Using 23Na NMR measurements on sodium cobaltates at intermediate dopings (0.44<=x<=0.62), we establish the qualitative change of behavior of the local magnetic susceptibility at x*=0.63-0.65, from a low x Pauli-like regime to the high x Curie-Weiss regime. For 0.5<=x<=0.62, the presence of a maximum T* in the temperature dependence of the susceptibility shows the existence of an x-dependent energy scale. T_1 relaxation measurements establish the predominantly antiferromagnetic character of spin correlations for x<x*. This contradicts the commonly assumed uncorrelated Pauli behavior in this x r…
We present new 29-Si NMR spectra in URu2Si2 for varying temperature T, and external field H. On lowering T, the systematics of the low-field lineshape and width reveal an extra component (lambda) to the linewidth below T_N ~ 17 K not observed previously. We find that lambda is magnetic-field independent and dominates the low-field lineshape for all orientations of H with respect to the tetragonal c axis. The behavior of lambda indicates a direct relationship between the 29-Si spin and the transition at T_N, but it is inconsistent with a coupling of the nuclei to static antiferromagnetic order/…
We report Cd NMR and Re NQR studies on Cd2Re2O7, the first superconductor among pyrochlore oxides Tc=1 K. Re NQR spectrum at zero magnetic field below 100 K rules out any magnetic or charge order. The spin-lattice relaxation rate below Tc exhibits a pronounced coherence peak and behaves within the weak-coupling BCS theory with nearly isotropic energy gap. Cd NMR results point to moderate ferromagnetic enhancement at high temperatures followed by rapid decrease of the density of states below the structural transition temperature of 200 K.
75As and 31P NMR studies are performed in PrCoAsO and NdCoPO respectively. The Knight shift data in PrCoAsO indicate the presence of an antiferromagnetic interaction between the 4f moments along the c axis in the ferromagnetic state of Co 3d moments. We propose a possible spin structure in this system. The 75As quadrupolar coupling constant, $ν_Q$ increases continuously with the decrease of temperature and is found to vary linearly with the intrinsic spin susceptibility, Kiso. This indicates a possibility of the presence of a coupling between charge density and spin density fluctuations. Furth…
We report $^{125}$Te nuclear magnetic resonance and $^{181}$Ta nuclear quadrupole resonance studies on single-crystal Ta$_{4}$Pd$_{3}$Te$_{16}$, which has a quasi-one-dimensional structure and superconducts below $T_{\rm c}=4.3$ K. $^{181}$Ta with spin $I=7/2$ is sensitive to quadrupole interactions, while $^{125}$Te with spin $I=1/2$ can only relax by magnetic interactions. By comparing the spin-lattice relaxation rate ( $1/T_{1}$) of $^{181}$Ta and $^{125}$Te, we found that electric-field-gradient (EFG) fluctuations develop below $80$ K. The EFG fluctuations are enhanced with decreasing temp…
