This paper presents an analytical characterization of the ergodic capacity of amplify-and-forward (AF) MIMO dual-hop relay channels, assuming that the channel state information is available at the destination terminal only. In contrast to prior results, our expressions apply for arbitrary numbers of antennas and arbitrary relay configurations. We derive an expression for the exact ergodic capacity, simplified closed-form expressions for the high SNR regime, and tight closed-form upper and lower bounds. These results are made possible to employing recent tools from finite-dimensional random matrix theory to derive new closed-form expressions for various statistical properties of the equivalent AF MIMO dual-hop relay channel, such as the distribution of an unordered eigenvalue and certain random determinant properties. Based on the analytical capacity expressions, we investigate the impact of the system and channel characteristics, such as the antenna configuration and the relay power gain. We also demonstrate a number of interesting relationships between the dual-hop AF MIMO relay channel and conventional point-to-point MIMO channels in various asymptotic regimes.
In this paper, we propose a comprehensive research over triple hop all-optical relaying free-space optical (FSO) systems in the presence of all main noise sources including background, thermal and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise and by considering the effect of the optical degree-of- freedom (DoF). Using full CSI relaying, we derive the exact expressions for the noise variance at the destination. Then, in order to simplify the analytical expressions of full CSI relaying, we also propose and investigate the validity of different approximations over noise variance at the destination. …
In this correspondence, we consider an amplify-and-forward relay network in which relayed information is overheard by an eavesdropper. In order to confound the eavesdropper, a wireless-powered jammer is also considered which harvests energy from a multiple-antenna source. We proposed a new secure beamforming scheme in which beamforming vector is a linear combination of the energy beamforming (EB) and information beamforming (IB) vectors. We also present a new closed-form solution for the proposed beamforming vector which is shown to achieve a higher secrecy rate as compared to the trivial EB a…
A MIMO secure two-hop wireless communication system is considered in this paper. In this model, there are no direct links between the source-destination and the source-eavesdropper. The problem is maximizing the secrecy capacity of the system over all possible amplify and forward (AF) relay strategies, such that the power consumption at the source node and the relay node is limited. When all the nodes are equipped with single antenna, this non-convex optimization problem is fully characterized. When all the nodes (except the intended receiver) are equipped with multiple antennas, the optimizat…
The present paper studies the asymptotic performance of multi-hop amplify-and-forward relay multiple-antenna communication channels. Each multi-antenna terminal in the network amplifies the received signal, sent by a source, and retransmits it upstream towards a destination. Achievable ergodic rates under both jointly optimal detection and decoding and practical separate decoding schemes for arbitrary signaling schemes, along with the average bit error rate for various receiver structures are derived in the regime where the number of antennas at each terminal grows large without a bound. To ov…
Relaying has been extensively studied during the last decades and has found numerous applications in wireless communications. The simplest relaying method, namely amplify and forward, has shown potential in MIMO multiple access systems, when Gaussian fading channels are assumed for both hops. However, in some cases ill conditioned channels may appear on the second hop. For example, this impairment could affect cooperative BS systems with microwave link backhauling, which involve strong line of sight channels with insufficient scattering. In this paper, we consider a large system analysis of su…
In this paper, linear beamforming design for amplify-and-forward relaying cellular networks is considered, in which base station, relay station and mobile terminals are all equipped with multiple antennas. The design is based on minimum mean-square-error criterion, and both uplink and downlink scenarios are considered. It is found that the downlink and uplink beamforming design problems are in the same form, and iterative algorithms with the same structure can be used to solve the design problems. For the specific cases of fully loaded or overloaded uplink systems, a novel algorithm is derived…
This paper studies a three-node network in which an intermediate nano-transceiver, acting as a relay, is placed between a nano-transmitter and a nano-receiver to improve the range of diffusion-based molecular communication. Motivated by the relaying protocols used in traditional wireless communication systems, we study amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying with fixed and variable amplification factor for use in molecular communication systems. To this end, we derive a closed-form expression for the expected end-to-end error probability. Furthermore, we derive a closed-form expression for the optim…
In this paper, we present an analysis of the outage probability for fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) multihop relay links operating in the high SNR regime. Our analysis exploits properties of Mellin transforms to derive an asymptotic approximation that is accurate even when the per-hop channel gains adhere to completely different fading models. The main result contained in the paper is a general expression for the outage probability, which is a functional of the Mellin transforms of the per-hop channel gains. Furthermore, we explicitly calculate the asymptotic outage probability for four di…
The remarkable promise of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless channels has motivated an intense research activity to characterize the theoretical and practical issues associated with the design of transmit (source) and receive (destination) processing matrices under different operating conditions. This activity was primarily focused on point-to-point (single-hop) communications but more recently there has been an extensive work on two-hop or multi-hop settings in which single or multiple relays are used to deliver the information from the source to the destination. The aim of this t…
In this paper a unified approach for power allocation (PA) problem in multi-hop orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying systems has been developed. In the proposed approach, we consider short and long-term individual and total power constraints at the source and relays, and devise decentralized low complexity PA algorithms when wireless links are subject to channel path-loss and small-scale Rayleigh fading. In particular, aiming at improving the instantaneous rate of multi-hop transmission systems with AF relaying, we develop (i) a near-optimal itera…
The various wireless networks have made the ambient radio frequency signals around the world. Wireless information and power transfer enables the devices to recycle energy from these ambient radio frequency signals and process information simultaneously. In this paper, we develop a wireless information and power transfer protocol in two-way amplify-and-forward relaying channels, where two sources exchange information via an energy harvesting relay node. The relay node collects energy from the received signals and uses it to provide the transmission power to forward the received signals. We ana…
The ergodic capacity of underlay cognitive (secondary) dual-hop relaying systems is analytically investigated. Specifically, the amplify-and-forward transmission protocol is considered, while the received signals undergo multipath fading and shadowing with non-identical statistics. To efficiently describe this composite type of fading, the well-known generalized-$K$ fading model is used. New analytical expressions and quite accurate closed-form approximations regarding the ergodic capacity of the end-to-end communication are obtained, in terms of finite sum series of the Meijer's-$G$ function.…
In this paper, we study the performance of an amplify-and-forward (AF) based analog network coding (ANC) relay scheme in a multi-hop wireless network under individual power constraints. In the first part, a unicast scenario is considered. The problem of finding the maximum achievable rate is formulated as an optimization problem. Rather than solving this non-concave maximization problem, we derive upper and lower bounds for the optimal rate. A cut-set like upper bound is obtained in a closed form for a layered relay network. A pseudo-optimal AF scheme is developed for a two-hop parallel networ…
In this paper, linear transceiver design for multi-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) relaying systems with Gaussian distributed channel estimation errors is investigated. Commonly used transceiver design criteria including weighted mean-square-error (MSE) minimization, capacity maximization, worst-MSE/MAX-MSE minimization and weighted sum-rate maximization, are considered and unified into a single matrix-variate optimization problem. A general robust design algorithm is proposed to solve the unified problem. Specifically, by exploiting majorization theory and prop…
We consider a generalized multi-hop MIMO amplify-and-forward (AF) relay network with multiple sources/destinations and arbitrarily number of relays. We establish two dualities and the corresponding dual transformations between such a network and its dual, respectively under single network linear constraint and per-hop linear constraint. The result is a generalization of the previous dualities under different special cases and is proved using new techniques which reveal more insight on the duality structure that can be exploited to optimize MIMO precoders. A unified optimization framework is pr…
We analyze a secure two-hop mixed radio frequency (RF) and underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) system using a fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relay. The UWOC channel is modeled using a unified mixture exponential-generalized Gamma distribution to consider the combined effects of air bubbles and temperature gradients on transmission characteristics. Both legitimate and eavesdropping RF channels are modeled using flexible $α-μ$ distributions. Specifically, we first derive both the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the received signa…
The problem of minimizing the total power consumption while satisfying different quality-of-service (QoS) requirements in a two-hop multiple-input multiple-output network with a single non-regenerative relay is considered. As shown by Y. Rong in [1], the optimal processing matrices for both linear and non-linear transceiver architectures lead to the diagonalization of the source-relay-destination channel so that the power minimization problem reduces to properly allocating the available power over the established links. Unfortunately, finding the solution of this problem is numerically difficu…
This paper studies the general multi-antenna multiple-relay network. Every two nodes of the network are either connected together through a Rayleigh fading channel or disconnected. We study the ergodic capacity of the network in the high SNR regime. We prove that the traditional amplify-forward relaying achieves the maximum multiplexing gain of the network. Furthermore, we show that the maximum multiplexing gain of the network is equal to the minimum vertex cut-set of the underlying graph of the network, which can be computed in polynomial time in terms of the number of network nodes. Finally,…
We consider a fading AWGN 2-user 2-hop network where the channel coefficients are independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) drawn from a continuous distribution and vary over time. For a broad class of channel distributions, we characterize the ergodic sum capacity to within a constant number of bits/sec/Hz, independent of signal-to-noise ratio. The achievability follows from the analysis of an interference neutralization scheme where the relays are partitioned into $M$ pairs, and interference is neutralized separately by each pair of relays. When $M=1$, the proposed ergodic interferenc…
In this paper, we analyze the ergodic capacity of a dual-hop amplify-and-forward relaying system where the relay is equipped with multiple antennas and subject to co-channel interference (CCI) and the additive white Gaussian noise. Specifically, we consider three heuristic precoding schemes, where the relay first applies the 1) maximal-ratio combining (MRC) 2) zero-forcing (ZF) 3) minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) principle to combine the signal from the source, and then steers the transformed signal towards the destination with the maximum ratio transmission (MRT) technique. For the MRC/MRT a…
Consider a wireless MIMO multi-hop channel with n_s non-cooperating source antennas and n_d fully cooperating destination antennas, as well as L clusters containing k non-cooperating relay antennas each. The source signal traverses all L clusters of relay antennas, before it reaches the destination. When relay antennas within the same cluster scale their received signals by the same constant before the retransmission, the equivalent channel matrix H relating the input signals at the source antennas to the output signals at the destination antennas is proportional to the product of channel matr…
In this paper, we consider a three node relay network comprising a source, a relay, and a destination. The source transmits the message to the destination using hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) with incremental redundancy (IR). The relay overhears the transmitted message, amplifies it using a variable gain amplifier, and then forwards the message to the destination. This latter combines both the source and the relay message and tries to decode the information. In case of decoding failure, the destination sends a negative acknowledgement. A new replica of the message containing new parity…
A novel asymptotic closed-form probability density function (pdf) of the two-hop (TH) link is derived for a simultaneous wireless information and power transfer based differential amplify-and-forward system. Based on the pdf, asymptotic closed-form average bit-error rate expressions of the single TH link and the TH link with direct link combined with a linear combining scheme are both derived. Monte Carlo simulations verify the analytical expressions.
We Consider a multihop relay network in which two terminals are communicating with each other via a number of cluster of relays. Performance of such networks depends on the routing protocols employed. In this paper, we find the expressions for the average symbol error probability (ASEP) performance of amplify-and-forward (AF) multihop transmission for the simplest routing protocol in which the relay transmits using the channel having the best symbol to noise ratio (SNR). The ASEP performance of a better protocol proposed in [1] known as the adhoc protocol is also analyzed. The derived expressi…
In interference alignment, users sharing a wireless channel are each able to achieve data rates of up to half of the non-interfering channel capacity, no matter the number of users. In an ergodic setting, this is achieved by pairing complementary channel realizations in order to amplify signals and cancel interference. However, this scheme has the possibility for large delays in decoding message symbols. We show that delay can be mitigated by using outputs from potentially more than two channel realizations, although data rate may be reduced. We further demonstrate the tradeoff between rate an…
Cooperative relaying is utilized as an efficient method for data communication in wireless sensor networks and the Internet of Things (IoT). However, sometimes due to the necessity of multi-hop relaying in such communication networks, it is challenging to guarantee the secrecy of cooperative transmissions when the relays may themselves be eavesdroppers, i.e., we may face with the untrusted relaying scenario where the relays are both necessary helpers and potential adversary. To obviate this issue, a new cooperative jamming scheme is proposed in this paper, in which the data can be confidential…
A theorem that describes the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) outage behavior of fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (FGAF) relay systems is given. Qualitatively, the theorem states that the outage probability decays according to a power law, where the power is dictated by the poles of the moments of the underlying per-hop fading distributions. The power law decay is dampened by a logarithmic factor when the leading pole (furthest to the right in the plane) is of order two or more. The theorem is easy to apply and several examples are presented to this effect.
In this paper, robust transceiver design based on minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) criterion for dual-hop amplify-and-forward MIMO relay systems is investigated. The channel estimation errors are modeled as Gaussian random variables, and then the effect are incorporated into the robust transceiver based on the Bayesian framework. An iterative algorithm is proposed to jointly design the precoder at the source, the forward matrix at the relay and the equalizer at the destination, and the joint design problem can be efficiently solved by quadratic matrix programming (QMP).
In this paper, the performance of a dual-hop energy harvesting-based fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying communication system, subject to fading impairments, is investigated. We consider a source node ($S$) communicating with a destination node ($D$) through a fixed distant relay ($R$), which harvests energy from its received signals and uses it to amplify and forward the received signals to $D$. Power-splitting (PS) and time-switching (TS) schemes are considered in the analysis for energy harvesting. The $S$-$R$ and $R$-$D$ hops are modeled by the Nakagami-$m$ and $α$-$μ$ fading mode…
In this correspondence the cumulants of the mutual information of the flat Rayleigh fading amplify-and-forward MIMO relay channel without direct link between source and destination are derived in the large array limit. The analysis is based on the replica trick and covers both spatially independent and correlated fading in the first and the second hop, while beamforming at all terminals is restricted to deterministic weight matrices. Expressions for mean and variance of the mutual information are obtained. Their parameters are determined by a nonlinear equation system. All higher cumulants are…
This paper investigates the impact of the channel state information (CSI) and antenna correlation at the multi-antenna relay on the performance of wireless powered dual-hop amplify-and-forward relaying systems. Depending on the available CSI at the relay, two different scenarios are considered, namely, instantaneous CSI and statistical CSI where the relay has access only to the antenna correlation matrix. Adopting the power-splitting architecture, we present a detailed performance study for both cases. Closed-form analytical expressions are derived for the outage probability and ergodic capaci…
In this paper, we consider a two-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying system, where the relay node is energy-constrained and harvests energy from the source node. In the literature, there are three main energy-harvesting (EH) protocols, namely, time-switching relaying (TSR), power-splitting (PS) relaying (PSR) and ideal relaying receiver (IRR). Unlike the existing studies, in this paper, we consider $α$-$μ$ fading channels. In this respect, we derive accurate unified analytical expressions for the ergodic capacity for the aforementioned protocols over independent but not identically distribut…
In this letter, we analyze the ergodic capacity of bidirectional amplify-and-forward relay selection (RS) with imperfect channel state information (CSI), i.e., outdated CSI and imperfect channel estimation. Practically, the optimal RS scheme in maximizing the ergodic capacity cannot be achieved, due to the imperfect CSI. Therefore, two suboptimal RS schemes are discussed and analyzed, in which the first RS scheme is based on the imperfect channel coefficients, and the second RS scheme is based on the predicted channel coefficients. The lower bound of the ergodic capacity with imperfect CSI is …
In this two-part paper, we consider the multiantenna multihop relay channels in which the source signal arrives at the destination through N independent relaying hops in series. The main concern of this work is to design relaying strategies that utilize efficiently the relays in such a way that the diversity is maximized. In part I, we focus on the amplify-and-forward (AF) strategy with which the relays simply scale the received signal and retransmit it. More specifically, we characterize the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) of the AF scheme in a general multihop channel with arbitrary nu…
Aligned-Images Sumset Inequalities are used in this work to study the Generalized Degrees of Freedom (GDoF) of the symmetric layered multi-hop interference channel under the robust assumption that the channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT) is limited to finite precision. First, the sum-GDoF value is characterized for the $2\times 2\times 2$ setting that is comprised of $2$ sources, $2$ relays, and $2$ destinations. It is shown that the sum-GDoF do not improve even if perfect CSIT is allowed in the first hop, as long as the CSIT in the second hop is limited to finite precision. Th…
We consider the two-hop interference channel (IC) with constant real channel coefficients, which consists of two source-destination pairs, separated by two relays. We analyze the achievable degrees of freedom (DoF) of such network when relays are restricted to perform scalar amplify-forward (AF) operations, with possibly time-varying coefficients. We show that, somewhat surprisingly, by providing the flexibility of choosing time-varying AF coefficients at the relays, it is possible to achieve 4/3 sum-DoF. We also develop a novel outer bound that matches our achievability, hence characterizing …
In this paper, robust transceiver design with Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) for multi-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relaying systems is investigated. At source node, THP is adopted to mitigate the spatial intersymbol interference. However, due to its nonlinear nature, THP is very sensitive to channel estimation errors. In order to reduce the effects of channel estimation errors, a joint Bayesian robust design of THP at source, linear forwarding matrices at relays and linear equalizer at destination is proposed. With novel applications of elegant chara…
In this paper, we consider unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) assisted cellular communication system, where UAVs can be used as amplify-and-forward (AF) relays. The effective channel with UAV assisted communication can be modeled as a Rayleigh product-channel, and we derive a tight lower-bound of the ergodic capacity in closed-form. With the obtained lower-bound, trade-offs between the transmit power and the equipped number of antennas of the UAVs can be analyzed. Alternatively, for a giving setting of users and the base-transceiver station (BTS), the needed transmit power and number of antennas …
This paper considers a two-hop interference network, where two users transmit independent messages to their respective receivers with the help of two relay nodes. The transmitters do not have direct links to the receivers; instead, two relay nodes serve as intermediaries between the transmitters and receivers. Each hop, one from the transmitters to the relays and the other from the relays to the receivers, is modeled as a Gaussian interference channel, thus the network is essentially a cascade of two interference channels. For this network, achievable symmetric rates for different parameter re…
In this paper, optimal linear transceiver designs for multi-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) Multiple-input Multiple-out (MIMO) relaying systems with Gaussian distributed channel estimation errors are investigated. Some commonly used transceiver design criteria are unified into a single matrix-variate optimization problem. With novel applications of majorization theory and properties of matrix-variate function, the optimal structure of robust transceiver is first derived. Based on the optimal structure, the original transceiver design problems are reduced to much simpler problems with only scalar …
Schein and Gallager introduced the Gaussian parallel relay channel in 2000. They proposed the Amplify-and-Forward (AF) and the Decode-and-Forward (DF) strategies for this channel. For a long time, the best known achievable rate for this channel was based on the AF and DF with time sharing (AF-DF). Recently, a Rematch-and-Forward (RF) scheme for the scenario in which different amounts of bandwidth can be assigned to the first and second hops were proposed. In this paper, we propose a \emph{Combined Amplify-and-Decode Forward (CADF)} scheme for the Gaussian parallel relay channel. We prove that …
This paper studies dual-hop amplify-and-forward relaying over time-varying Rayleigh fading channels with differential M-PSK modulation and non-coherent detection. For the case of "two-symbol" detection, a first order time-series model is utilized to characterize the time-varying nature of the cascaded channel. Based on this model, an exact bit error rate (BER) expression is derived and confirmed with simulation results. The obtained expression shows that the BER is related to the auto-correlation of the cascaded channel and an irreducible error floor exists at high transmit power. To overcome …
In this paper, joint transceiver design for dual-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) MIMO relay systems with Gaussian distributed channel estimation errors in both two hops is investigated. Due to the fact that various linear transceiver designs can be transformed to a weighted linear minimum mean-square-error (LMMSE) transceiver design with specific weighting matrices, weighted mean square error (MSE) is chosen as the performance metric. Precoder matrix at source, forwarding matrix at relay and equalizer matrix at destination are jointly designed with channel estimation errors taken care of by Bayes…
This paper studies the impact of co-channel interferences (CCIs) on the system performance of multi-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying, in a simple and explicit way. For generality, the desired channels along consecutive relaying hops and the CCIs at all nodes are subject to Nakagami-$m$ fading with different shape factors. This study reveals that the diversity gain is determined only by the fading shape factor of the desired channels, regardless of the interference and the number of relaying hops. On the other hand, although the coding gain is in general a complex function of various syste…
This paper presents an analytical investigation on the outage performance of dual-hop multiple antenna amplify-and-forward relaying systems in the presence of interference. For both the fixed-gain and variable-gain relaying schemes, exact analytical expressions for the outage probability of the systems are derived. Moreover, simple outage probability approximations at the high signal to noise ratio regime are provided, and the diversity order achieved by the systems are characterized. Our results suggest that variable-gain relaying systems always outperform the corresponding fixed-gain relayin…
In this paper, linear transceiver design for dual-hop non-regenerative (amplify-and-forward (AF)) MIMO-OFDM systems under channel estimation errors is investigated. Second order moments of channel estimation errors in the two hops are first deduced. Then based on the Bayesian framework, joint design of linear forwarding matrix at the relay and equalizer at the destination under channel estimation errors is proposed to minimize the total mean-square-error (MSE) of the output signal at the destination. The optimal designs for both correlated and uncorrelated channel estimation errors are conside…
In this paper, we present a novel framework that can be used to study the capacity and power scaling properties of linear multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) $d\times d$ antenna amplify-and-forward (AF) relay networks. In particular, we model these networks as random dynamical systems (RDS) and calculate their $d$ Lyapunov exponents. Our analysis can be applied to systems with any per-hop channel fading distribution, although in this contribution we focus on Rayleigh fading. Our main results are twofold: 1) the total transmit power at the $n$th node will follow a deterministic trajectory thr…
We analyze the performance of amplify-and-forward (AF) automatic repeat request (ARQ) for a two-hop cooperative system with reliability constrains. For this setup, we first derive the closed-form outage probability expression. Next, we present a power allocation scheme that allows us to achieve a target outage probability, while minimizing the outage-weighted average power expenditure for asymmetric power allocation between the source and relay. This is cast as an optimization problem, and the optimal power allocation (OPA) is obtained in closed form by invoking the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) co…
This paper studies dual-hop amplify-and-forward relaying system employing differential encoding and decoding over time-varying Rayleigh fading channels. First, the convectional "two-symbol" differential detection (CDD) is theoretically analysed in terms of the bit-error-rate (BER). The obtained analysis clearly shows that performance of two-symbol differential detection severely degrades in fast-fading channels and reaches an irreducible error floor at high signal-to-noise ratio region. To overcome the error floor experienced with fast-fading, a practical suboptimal "multiple-symbol" detection…
In this paper we investigate the optimal latency of communications. Focusing on fixed rate communication without any feedback channel, this paper encompasses low-latency strategies with which one hop and multi-hop communication issues are treated from an information theoretic perspective. By defining the latency as the time required to make decisions, we prove that if short messages can be transmitted in parallel Gaussian channels, for example, via orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-like signals, there exists an optimal low-latency strategy for every code. This can be achieved v…
Interference alignment is a signaling technique that provides high multiplexing gain in the interference channel. It can be extended to multi-hop interference channels, where relays aid transmission between sources and destinations. In addition to coverage extension and capacity enhancement, relays increase the multiplexing gain in the interference channel. In this paper, three cooperative algorithms are proposed for a multiple-antenna amplify-and-forward (AF) relay interference channel. The algorithms design the transmitters and relays so that interference at the receivers can be aligned and …
Higher-order statistics (HOS) of the channel capacity provide useful information regarding the level of reliability of the signal transmission at a particular rate. We propose in this letter a novel and unified analysis, which is based on the moment-generating function (MGF) approach, to efficiently and accurately compute the HOS of the channel capacity for amplify-and-forward multihop transmission over generalized fading channels. More precisely, our mathematical formulism is easy-to-use and tractable specifically requiring only the reciprocal MGFs of the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio d…
This paper presents an analysis of a multiple dual-hop relaying system, which is composed of km-class radio frequency (RF)-free-space optical (FSO) links. Partial relay selection based on outdated channel state information (CSI) is employed in order to select active relay for further transmission. Amplify-and-forward relaying protocol is utilized. The RF links are assumed to be subject to Rayleigh fading, and the FSO links are influenced by both Gamma-Gamma atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors. On the basis of our previously derived expression for cumulative distribution function of the …
In this paper, we consider a two-hop one-way relay network for multigroup multicast transmission between long-distance users, in which the relay is equipped with multiple antennas, while the transmitters and receivers are all with a single antenna. Assuming that perfect channel state information is available, we study amplify-and-forward (AF) schemes that aim at optimizing the max-min-fair (MMF) rate. We begin by considering the classic beamformed AF (BF-AF) scheme, whose corresponding MMF design problem can be formulated as a rank-constrained fractional semidefinite program (SDP). We show tha…
Despite the deleterious effect of hardware impairments on communication systems, most prior works have not investigated their impact on widely used relay systems. Most importantly, the application of inexpensive transceivers, being prone to hardware impairments, is the most cost-efficient way for the implementation of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Consequently, the direction of this paper is towards the investigation of the impact of hardware impairments on MIMO relay networks with large number of antennas. Specifically, we obtain the general expression for the ergodic…
Ergodic capacity is an important performance measure associated with reliable communication at the highest rate at which information can be sent over the channel with a negligible probability of error. In the shadow of this definition, diversity receivers (such as selection combining, equal-gain combining and maximal-ratio combining) and transmission techniques (such as cascaded fading channels, amplify-and-forward multihop transmission) are deployed in mitigating various performance impairing effects such as fading and shadowing in digital radio communication links. However, the exact analysi…
In this paper, we consider the Physical Layer Security(PLS) problem in orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) based dual-hop system which consists of multiple users, multiple amplify and forward relays, and an eavesdropper. The aim is to enhance PLS of the entire system by maximizing sum secrecy rate of secret users through optimal resource allocation under various practical constraints. Specifically, the sub-carrier allocation to different users, the relay assignments, and the power loading over different sub-carriers at transmitting nodes are optimized. The joint optimization …
To improve the sum-rate (SR) of the dual-hop relay system, a novel two-stage power allocation scheme with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is proposed. In this scheme, after the reception of the superposition coded symbol with a power allocation from the source, the relay node forwards a new superposition coded symbol with another power allocation to the destination. By employing the maximum ratio combination (MRC), the destination jointly decodes the information symbols from the source and the relay. Assuming Rayleigh fading channels, closed-form solution of the ergodic SR at high signal…
The exact closed-form expressions for outage probability and bit error rate of spectrum sharing-based multi-hop decodeand- forward (DF) relay networks in non-identical Rayleigh fading channels are derived. We also provide the approximate closed-form expression for the system ergodic capacity. Utilizing these tractable analytical formulas, we can study the impact of key network parameters on the performance of cognitivemulti-hop relay networks under interference constraints. Using a linear network model, we derive an optimum relay position scheme by numerically solving an optimization problem o…
