Low-lying relaxation satellites give rise to ultrafast electron dynamics following outer-valence ionization of a molecular system is studied. To demonstrate the impact of such satellites, the evolution of the electronic cloud after sudden removal of an electron from the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of the organic unsaturated nitroso compound 2-Nitroso[1,3]oxazolo[5,4-d][1,3]oxazole is traced in real time and space using ab initio methods only. Our results show that the initially created hole charge remains stationary but on top of it the system reacts by an ultrafast pi-pi* excitation followed by a cyclic excitation-deexcitation process which leads to a redistribution of the charge. The pi-pi* excitation following the removal of the HOMO electron takes place on a sub-femtosecond time scale and the period of the excitation-deexcitation alternations is about 1.4 fs. In real space the processes of excitation and de-excitation represent ultrafast delocalization and localization of the charge. The results are analyzed by a simple two- and three-state model.
X-ray diffraction from molecules in the ground state produces an image of their charge density, and time-resolved X-ray diffraction can thus monitor the motion of the nuclei. However, the density change of excited valence electrons upon optical excitation can barely be monitored with regular diffraction techniques due to the overwhelming background contribution of the core electrons. We present a nonlinear X-ray technique made possible by novel free electron laser sources, which provides a spatial electron density image of valence electron excitations. The technique, sum frequency generation c…
Recently developed circularly polarized X-ray light sources can probe ultrafast chiral electronic and nuclear dynamics through spatially localized resonant core transitions. We present simulations of time-resolved circular dichroism (TRCD) signals given by the difference of left and right circularly polarized X-ray probe transmission following an excitation by a circularly polarized optical pump with variable time delay. Application is made to formamide which is achiral in the ground state and assumes two chiral geometries upon optical excitation to the first valence excited state. Probes reso…
Recent advances in attosecond physics provide access to the correlated motion of valence and core electrons on their intrinsic timescales. For valence excitations, processes related to the electron spin are usually driven by nuclear motion. For core-excited states, where the core hole has a nonzero angular momentum, spin-orbit coupling is strong enough to drive spin-flips on a much shorter time scale. Here, unprecedented short spin-crossover driven by spin-orbit coupling is demonstrated for L-edge (2p$\rightarrow$3d) excited states of a prototypical Fe(II) complex. It occurs on a time scale, w…
Tracing ultrafast processes induced by interaction of light with matter is often very challenging. In molecular systems, the initially created electronic coherence becomes damped by the slow nuclear rearrangement on a femtosecond timescale which makes real-time observations of electron dynamics in molecules particularly difficult. In this work, we report an extension of the theory underlying the attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (ATAS) for the case of molecules, including a full account for the coupled electron-nuclear dynamics in the initially created wave packet, and apply it to p…
Photo-ionization induced ultrafast electron dynamics is considered as a precursor to the slower nuclear dynamics associated with molecular dissociation. Here, using ab initio multielectron wave-packet propagation method, we study the overall many-electron dynamics, triggered by the ionization of outer-valence orbitals of different tautomers of a prototype molecule with more than one symmetry element. From the time evolution of the initially created averaged hole density of each system, we identify distinctly different charge dynamics response in the tautomers. We observe that keto form shows c…
We have investigated the photodynamics of $β$-D-glucose employing our field-induced surface hopping method (FISH), which allows us to simulate the coupled electron-nuclear dynamics, including explicitly nonadiabatic effects and light-induced excitation. Our results reveal that from the initially populated S$_{1}$ and S$_{2}$ states, glucose returns nonradiatively to the ground state within about 200 fs. This takes place mainly via conical intersections (CIs) whose geometries in most cases involve the elongation of a single O-H bond, while in some instances ring-opening due to dissociation of a…
Intersystem crossings between singlet and triplet states represent a crucial relaxation pathway in photochemical processes. Herein, we probe the intersystem crossing in hexafluoro-acetylacetone with ultrafast X-ray transient absorption spectroscopy at the carbon K-edge. We observe the excited state dynamics following excitation with 266 nm UV light to the $^1ππ^{*}$ (S$_2$) state with element and site-specificity using a broadband soft X-ray pulse produced by high harmonic generation. These results are compared to X-ray spectra computed from orbital optimized density functional theory methods.…
In earlier work [J. Chem. Phys. 144, 064102 (2016)], we introduced a time-dependent formulation of the second-order N-electron valence perturbation theory (t-NEVPT2) which (i) had a lower computational scaling than the usual internally-contracted perturbation formulation, and (ii) yielded the fully uncontracted NEVPT2 energy. Here, we present a combination of t-NEVPT2 with a matrix product state (MPS) reference wavefunction (t-MPS-NEVPT2) that allows to compute uncontracted dynamic correlation energies for large active spaces and basis sets, using the time-dependent density matrix renormalizat…
The rovibronic structure of A$^2Σ^+$, B$^2Π$ and C$^2Π$ states of nitric oxide (NO)is studied with the aim of producing comprehensive line lists for its near ultraviolet spectrum. Empirical energy levels for the three electronic states are determined using the a combination of the empirical MARVEL procedure and ab initio calculations, and the available experimental data are critically evaluated. Abinito methods which deal simultaneously with the Rydberg-like A$^2Σ^+$ and C$^2Π$, and the valence B$^2Π$ state are tested. Methods of modeling the sharp avoided crossing between the B$^2Π$ and C$^2Π…
Resonant Raman excitation by ultrafast vacuum ultraviolet laser pulses is a powerful means to study electron dynamics in molecules, but experiments must contend with linear background ionization: frequencies high enough to reach resonant core-valence transitions will usually ionize all occupied orbitals as well, and the ionization cross sections are usually dominant. Here we show that attosecond pulses can induce a process, transient impulsive stimulated Raman scattering, which can overwhelm valence ionization. Calculations are performed for atomic sodium, but the principal is valid for many m…
Recent developments in attosecond spectroscopy yield access to the correlated motion of electrons on their intrinsic time scales. Spin-flip dynamics is usually considered in the context of valence electronic states, where spin-orbit coupling is weak and processes related to the electron spin are usually driven by nuclear motion. However, for core-excited states, where the core hole has a nonzero angular momentum, spin-orbit coupling is strong enough to drive spin-flips on a much shorter time scale. Using density matrix based time-dependent restricted active space configuration interaction incl…
Tracing the motion of electrons has enormous relevance to understanding ubiquitous phenomena in ultrafast science, such as the dynamical evolution of the electron density during complex chemical and biological processes. Scattering of ultrashort x-ray pulses from an electronic wavepacket would appear to be the most obvious approach to image the electronic motion in real-time and real-space with the notion that such scattering patterns, in the far-field regime, encode the instantaneous electron density of the wavepacket. However, recent results by Dixit {\em et al.} [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.…
An array of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice (Mott insulator) excited to a state where single electron wave-functions spatially overlap would represent a new and ideal platform to simulate exotic electronic many-body phenomena in the condensed phase. However, this highly excited non-equilibrium system is expected to be so short-lived that it has eluded observation so far. Here, we demonstrate the first step toward its realization by exciting high-lying electronic (Rydberg) states of the atomic Mott insulator with a coherent ultrashort laser pulse. Beyond a threshold principal quantum numb…

Chirality is ubiquitous in nature and of fundamental importance in science. The present work focuses on understanding the conditions required to modify the chirality during ultrafast electronic motion by bringing enantiomers out-of-equilibrium. Different kinds of ultrashort linearly-polarised laser pulses are used to drive an ultrafast charge migration process by the excitation of a small number of low-lying excited states from the ground electronic state of S- and R-epoxypropane. Control over chiral electron dynamics is achieved by choosing the different orientations of the linearly polarised…
