A systematic method to construct the complete set of conserved quantities of the Haldane-Shastry type spin chains is proposed. The hidden relationship between the Yang-Baxter relation and the conservation laws of the long-range interacting integrable models is exposed explicitly. An integrable anisotropic Haldane-Shastry model is also constructed.
Majorana fermion representations of the algebra associated with spin, charge, and flavor currents have been used to transform the two-channel Kondo Hamiltonian. Using a path integral formulation, we derive a reduced effective action with long-range impurity spin-spin interactions at different imaginary times. In the semiclassical limit, it is equivalent to a one-dimensional Heisenberg spin chain with two-spin, three-spin, etc. long-range interactions, as a generalization of the inverse-square long-range Haldane-Shastry spin model. In this representation the elementary excitations are "semions"…
The Haldane-Shastry spin chain can be mapped to the infinite coupling limit of the SU(2) spin Calogero-Sutherland model. We use the $\mathfrak{gl}_2$ Jack polynomials' technology to compute the form factors of the spin operator on the multi-spinon spectrum. The spin structure factor is obtained through a form factor expansion. The expansion is proven to converge in the small momentum limit. Numerics based on two- and four-spinons contributions give an approximate result for the infinite temperature static and dynamic spin structure factor.
We study the relation of Yangians and spinons in the SU(n) Haldane--Shastry model. The representation theory of the Yangian is shown to be intimately related to the fractional statistics of the spinons. We construct the spinon Hilbert space from tensor products of the fundamental representations of the Yangian.
While the Bethe Ansatz solution of the Haldane--Shastry model appears to suggest that the spinons represent a free gas of half-fermions, Bernevig, Giuliano, and Laughlin (BGL) (cond-mat/0011069, cond-mat/0011270) have concluded recently that there is an attractive interaction between spinons. We argue that the dressed scattering matrix obtained with the asymptotic Bethe Ansatz is to be interpreted as the true and physical scattering matrix of the excitations, and hence, that the result by BGL is inconsistent with an earlier result by Essler (cond-mat/9406081). We critically re-examine the anal…
We present analytical and numerical results regarding the magnetization full counting statistics (FCS) of a subsystem in the ground-state of the Haldane-Shastry chain. Exact Pfaffian expressions are derived for the cumulant generating function, as well as any observable diagonal in the spin basis. In the limit of large systems, the scaling of the FCS is found to be in agreement with the Luttinger liquid theory. The same techniques are also applied to inhomogeneous deformations of the chain. This introduces a certain amount of disorder in the system; however we show numerically that this is not…
We show that infinite Matrix Product States (MPS) constructed from conformal field theories can describe ground states of one-dimensional critical systems with open boundary conditions. To illustrate this, we consider a simple infinite MPS for a spin-1/2 chain and derive an inhomogeneous open Haldane-Shastry model. For the spin-1/2 open Haldane-Shastry model, we derive an exact expression for the two-point spin correlation function. We also provide an SU($n$) generalization of the open Haldane-Shastry model and determine its twisted Yangian generators responsible for the highly degenerate mult…
The Haldane-Shastry model is one of the most studied interacting spin systems. The Yangian symmetry makes it exactly solvable, and the model has semionic excitations. We introduce disorder into the Haldane-Shastry model by allowing the spins to sit at random positions on the unit circle and study the properties of the eigenstates. At weak disorder, the spectrum is similar to the spectrum of the clean Haldane-Shastry model. At strong disorder, the long-range interactions in the model do not decay as a simple power law. The eigenstates in the middle of the spectrum follow a volume law, but the c…
We introduce four types of SU(2M+1) spin chains which can be regarded as the BC_N versions of the celebrated Haldane-Shastry chain. These chains depend on two free parameters and, unlike the original Haldane-Shastry chain, their sites need not be equally spaced. We prove that all four chains are solvable by deriving an exact expression for their partition function using Polychronakos's "freezing trick". From this expression we deduce several properties of the spectrum, and advance a number of conjectures that hold for a wide range of values of the spin M and the number of particles. In particu…
We propose two possible trial wave functions for the elementary excitations of the SU(3) Haldane--Shastry model, but then argue on very general grounds that only one or the other can be a valid excitation. We then prove explicitly that the trial wave function describing a coloron excitation which transforms according to representation $\bar{3}$ under SU(3) rotations if the spins of the original model transform according to representation 3, is exact. If a basis for the spins on the chain is spanned by the colors blue, red, and green, a basis for the coloron excitations is hence given by the co…
In a recent publication, we proposed two possible wave functions for the elementary excitations of the SU(3) Haldane--Shastry model (HSM), but argued on very general grounds that only one or the other can be a valid excitation. Here we provide the explicit details of our calculation proving that the wave function describing a coloron excitation which transforms according to representation $\bar{3}$ under SU(3) rotations if the spins of the original model transform according to representation 3, is exact. We further provide an explicit construction of the exact color-polarized two-coloron eigen…
We describe integrable elliptic q-deformed anisotropic long-range spin chain. The derivation is based on our recent construction for commuting anisotropic elliptic spin Ruijsenaars-Macdonald operators. We prove that the Polychronakos freezing trick can be applied to these operators, thus providing the commuting set of Hamiltonians for long-range spin chain constructed by means of the elliptic Baxter-Belavin ${\rm GL}_M$ $R$-matrix. Namely, we show that the freezing trick is reduced to a set of elliptic function identities, which are then proved. These identities can be treated as conditions fo…
The dynamical structure factor $S(q,ω)$ of the SU(K) (K=2,3,4) Haldane-Shastry model is derived exactly at zero temperature for arbitrary size of the system. The result is interpreted in terms of free quasi-particles which are generalization of spinons in the SU(2) case; the excited states relevant to $S(q,ω)$ consist of K quasi-particles each of which is characterized by a set of K-1 quantum numbers. Near the boundaries of the region where $S(q,ω)$ is nonzero, $S(q,ω)$ shows the power-law singularity. It is found that the divergent singularity occurs only in the lowest edges starting from $(q…
We present a new and simpler expression for the Hamiltonian of the partially isotropic (XXZ-like) version of the Haldane-Shastry model, which was derived by D. Uglov over two decades ago in an apparently little-known preprint. While resembling the pairwise long-range form of the Haldane-Shastry model our formula accounts for the multi-spin interactions obtained by Uglov. Our expression is physically meaningful, makes hermiticity manifest, and is computationally more efficient. We discuss the model's properties, including its limits and (ordinary and quantum-affine) symmetries. In particular we…
The dynamical structure factor $S(q,ω)$ of the K-component (K = 2,3,4) spin chain with the 1/r^2 exchange is derived exactly at zero temperature for arbitrary size of the system. The result is interpreted in terms of a free quasi-particle picture which is generalization of the spinon picture in the SU(2) case; the excited states consist of K quasi-particles each of which is characterized by a set of K-1 quantum numbers. Divergent singularities of $S(q,ω)$ at the spectral edges are derived analytically. The analytic result is checked numerically for finite systems.

We investigate a family of spin-S chain Hamiltonians recently introduced by one of us. For S=1/2, it corresponds to the Haldane-Shastry model. For general spin S, we find indication that the low-energy theory of these spin chains is described by the SU(2)_k Wess-Zumino-Witten model with coupling k=2S. In particular, we investigate the S=1 model whose ground state is given by a Pfaffian for even number of sites N. We reconcile aspects of the spectrum of the Hamiltonian for arbitrary N with trial states obtained by Schwinger projection of two Haldane-Shastry chains.

We study the $q$-analogue of the Haldane-Shastry model, a partially isotropic (XXZ-like) long-range spin chain that enjoys quantum-affine (really: quantum-loop) symmetries at finite size. We derive the pairwise form of the Hamiltonian, found by one of us building on work of Uglov, via 'freezing' from the affine Hecke algebra. We obtain explicit expressions for the spin-analogue of Macdonald operators. Through freezing these yield the higher Hamiltonians of the spin chain, including a Hamiltonian of the opposite chirality. The sum of the two chiral Hamiltonians has a real spectrum also for $q$ …
We show how to couple two free-fermion chains so that the excitations consist of Cooper pairs with zero energy, and free particles obeying (mutual) exclusion statistics. This behavior is reminiscent of anyonic superconductivity, and of a ferromagnetic version of the Haldane-Shastry spin chain, although here the interactions are local. We solve this model using the nested Bethe ansatz, and find all the eigenstates; the Cooper pairs correspond to exact-string or ``0/0'' solutions of the Bethe equations. We show how the model possesses an infinite-dimensional symmetry algebra, which is a supersym…
We consider a family of spin-1/2 models with few-body, SU(2) invariant Hamiltonians and analytical ground states related to the 1D Haldane-Shastry wavefunction. The spins are placed on the surface of a cylinder, and the standard 1D Haldane-Shastry model is obtained by placing the spins with equal spacing in a circle around the cylinder. Here, we show that another interesting family of models with two-body exchange interactions is obtained if we instead place the spins along one or two lines parallel to the cylinder axis, giving rise to chain and ladder models, respectively. We can change the s…
This monograph introduces an exact model for a critical spin chain with arbitrary spin S, which includes the Haldane--Shastry model as the special case S=1/2. While spinons in the Haldane--Shastry model obey abelian half-fermi statistics, the spinons in the general model introduced here obey non-abelian statistics. This manifests itself through topological choices for the fractional momentum spacings. The general model is derived by mapping exact models of quantized Hall states onto spin chains. The book begins with pedagogical review of all the relevant models including the non-abelian statis…
In this paper we study Inozemtsev's su(m) quantum spin model with hyperbolic interactions and the associated spin chain of Haldane-Shastry type introduced by Frahm and Inozemtsev. We compute the spectrum of Inozemtsev's model, and use this result and the freezing trick to derive a simple analytic expression for the partition function of the Frahm-Inozemtsev chain. We show that the energy levels of the latter chain can be written in terms of the usual motifs for the Haldane-Shastry chain, although with a different dispersion relation. The formula for the partition function is used to analyze th…
Magnetic excitations of the quasi-1D S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet (HAF) Cs2CuCl4 have been measured as a function of magnetic field using neutron scattering. For T<0.62 K and B=0 T the weak inter-chain coupling produces 3D incommensurate ordering. Fields greater than Bc =1.66 T, but less than the field (~8 T) required to fully align the spins, are observed to decouple the chains, and the system enters a disordered intermediate-field phase (IFP). The IFP excitations are in agreement with the predictions of Muller et al. for the 1D S=1/2 HAF, and Talstra and Haldane for the related 1/r^2 cha…
In this paper we discuss $R$-matrix-valued Lax pairs for ${\rm sl}_N$ Calogero-Moser model and their relation to integrable quantum long-range spin chains of the Haldane-Shastry-Inozemtsev type. First, we construct the $R$-matrix-valued Lax pairs for the third flow of the classical Calogero-Moser model. Then we notice that the scalar parts (in the auxiliary space) of the $M$-matrices corresponding to the second and third flows have form of special spin exchange operators. The freezing trick restricts them to quantum Hamiltonians of long-range spin chains. We show that for a special choice of t…
The mapping between the fermion and spinon compositions of eigenstates in the one-dimensional spin-1/2 XX model on a lattice with N sites is used to describe the spinon interaction from two different perspectives: (i) For finite N the energy of all eigenstates is expressed as a function of spinon momenta and spinon spins, which, in turn, are solutions of a set of Bethe ansatz equations. The latter are the basis of an exact thermodynamic analysis in the spinon representation of the XX model. (ii) For N -> infinity the energy per site of spinon configurations involving any number of spinon orbit…
We propose a set of spin system wavefunctions that are very similar to lattice versions of the Laughlin states. The wavefunction are conformal blocks of conformal field theories, and for filling factor ν=1/2 we provide a parent Hamiltonian, which is valid for any even number of spins and is at the same time a 2D generalization of the Haldane-Shastry model. We also demonstrate that the Kalmeyer-Laughlin state is reproduced as a particular case of this model. Finally, we discuss various properties of the spin states and point out several analogies to known results for the Laughlin states.
We compute the dynamical spin structure factor $S(k,ω)$ of the SU(3) Heisenberg chain variationally using a truncated Hilbert space spanned by the Gutzwiller projected particle-hole excitations of the Fermi sea, introduced in [B. Dalla Piazza et al., Nature Physics 11, 62 (2015)], with a modified importance sampling. We check the reliability of the method by comparing the $S(k,ω)$ to exact diagonalization results for 18 sites and to the two-soliton continuum of the Bethe Ansatz for 72 sites. We get an excellent agreement in both cases. Detailed analysis of the finite-size effects shows that th…
In integrable one-dimensional quantum systems an infinite set of local conserved quantities exists which can prevent a current from decaying completely. For cases like the spin current in the XXZ model at zero magnetic field or the charge current in the attractive Hubbard model at half filling, however, the current operator does not have overlap with any of the local conserved quantities. We show that in these situations transport at finite temperatures is dominated by a diffusive contribution with the Drude weight being either small or even zero. For the XXZ model we discuss in detail the rel…
We develop a framework to analyze one-dimensional topological superconductors with charge conservation. In particular, we consider models with $N$ flavors of fermions and $(\mathbb{Z}_2)^N$ symmetry, associated with the conservation of the fermionic parity of each flavor. For a single flavor, we recover the result that a distinct topological phase with exponentially localized zero modes does not exist due to absence of a gap to single particles in the bulk. For $N>1$, however, we show that the ends of the system can host low-energy, exponentially-localized modes. The analysis can readily be ge…
In this paper we study an su$(m)$-invariant open version of the Haldane-Shastry spin chain whose ground state can be obtained from the chiral correlator of the $c=m-1$ free boson boundary conformal field theory. We show that this model is integrable for a suitable choice of the chain sites depending on the roots of the Jacobi polynomial $P_N^{β-1,β'-1}$, where $N$ is the number of sites and $β,β'$ are two positive parameters. We also compute in closed form the first few nontrivial conserved charges arising from the twisted Yangian invariance of the model. We evaluate the chain's partition func…
We develop a method of constructing excited states in one dimensional spin chains which are derived from the $SU(2)_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten Conformal Field Theory (CFT) using a parent Hamiltonian approach. The resulting systems are equivalent to the Haldane-Shastry model. In our ansatz, correlation functions between primary fields correspond to the ground state of the spin system, whereas excited states are obtained by insertion of descendant fields. Our construction is based on the current algebra of the CFT and emphasizes the close relation between the spectrum of the spin system and the under…
We solve in closed form the simplest (su(1|1)) supersymmetric version of Inozemtsev's elliptic spin chain, as well as its infinite (hyperbolic) counterpart. The solution relies on the equivalence of these models to a system of free spinless fermions, and on the exact computation of the Fourier transform of the resulting elliptic hopping amplitude. We also compute the thermodynamic functions of the finite (elliptic) chain and their low temperature limit, and show that the energy levels become normally distributed in the thermodynamic limit. Our results indicate that at low temperatures the su(1…
We construct 1D and 2D long-range SU(N) spin models as parent Hamiltonians associated with infinite matrix product states. The latter are constructed from correlators of primary fields in the SU(N) level 1 WZW model. Since the resulting groundstates are of Gutzwiller-Jastrow type, our models can be regarded as lattice discretizations of fractional quantum Hall systems. We then focus on two specific types of 1D spin chains with spins located on the unit circle, a uniform and an alternating arrangement. For an equidistant distribution of identical spins we establish an explicit connection to the…
Fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states are topologically ordered which indicates that their essential properties are insensitive to smooth deformations of the manifold on which they are studied. Their microscopic Hamiltonian description, however, strongly depends on geometrical details. Recent work has shown how this dependence can be exploited to generate effective models that are both interesting in their own right and also provide further insight into the quantum Hall system. We review and expand on recent efforts to understand the FQH system close to the solvable thin-torus limit in terms of…
We construct a new exactly solvable supersymmetric spin chain related to the BC_N extended root system, which includes as a particular case the BC_N version of the Polychronakos-Frahm spin chain. We also introduce a supersymmetric spin dynamical model of Calogero type which yields the new chain in the large coupling limit. This connection is exploited to derive two different closed-form expressions for the chain's partition function by means of Polychronakos's freezing trick. We establish a boson-fermion duality relation for the new chain's spectrum, which is in fact valid for a large class of…
We provide a quantitative analysis of the splittings in low-lying numerical entanglement spectra (ES), at given momentum, of a number of quantum states that can be identified, based on "Li-Haldane state-counting", as ground states of (2+1)-dimensional chiral topological phases with global SU(2) symmetry. The ability to account for numerical ES splittings solely within the context of conformal field theory (CFT) is an additional diagnostic of the underlying topological theory, of finer sensitivity than "state-counting". We use the conformal boundary state description of the ES, which can be vie…
The ground-state phases of alternating-bond spin-1 diamond chains are investigated. Each ground state consists of an array of spin clusters separated by singlet dimers owing to an infinite number of local conservation laws. If no singlet dimers are present, the ground state is equivalent to that of a spin chain with infinite length. For strong frustration, we find a series of quantum phase transitions as in the case of alternating-bond mixed diamond chains with spins 1 and 1/2. For intermediate frustration, we find the nonmagnetic Haldane or dimer phases according to whether the bond alternatio…
Three decades ago, Inozemtsev found an isotropic long-range spin chain with elliptic pair potential that interpolates between the Heisenberg and Haldane-Shastry (HS) spin chains while admitting an exact solution throughout, based on a connection with the elliptic quantum Calogero-Sutherland model. Though Inozemtsev's spin chain is widely believed to be quantum integrable, the underlying algebraic reason for its exact solvability is not yet well understood. As a step in this direction we refine Inozemtsev's `extended coordinate Bethe ansatz' and clarify various aspects of the model's exact spec…
