We report developments of the kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) method with improved accuracy and increased versatility for the description of atomic diffusivity on metal surfaces. The on-lattice constraint built into our recently proposed Self-Learning KMC (SLKMC) [1] is released, leaving atoms free to occupy Off-Lattice positions to accommodate several processes responsible for small-cluster diffusion, periphery atom motion and hetero-epitaxial growth. The technique combines the ideas embedded in the SLKMC method with a new pattern recognition scheme fitted to an Off-Lattice model in which relative atomic positions is used to characterize and store configurations. Application of a combination of the drag and the Repulsive Bias Potential (RBP) methods for saddle points searches, allows the treatment of concerted cluster, and multiple and single atom motions on equal footing. This tandem approach has helped reveal several new atomic mechanisms which contribute to cluster migration. We present applications of this Off-Lattice SLKMC to the diffusion of 2D islands of Cu (containing 2 to 30 atoms) on Cu and Ag(111), using interatomic potential from the Embedded Atom Method. For the hetero system Cu/Ag(111), this technique has uncovered mechanisms involving concerted motions such as shear, breathing and commensurate-incommensurate occupancies. Although the technique introduces complexities in storage and retrieval, it does not introduce noticeable extra computational cost.
Extensive atomistic simulations based on the quasiparticle (QA) approach are performed to determine the momentous aspects of the displacive fcc/bcc phase transformation in a binary system. We demonstrate that the QA is able to predict the major structural characteristics of fcc/bcc phase transformations, including the growth of a bcc nuclei in a fcc matrix, and eventually the formation of an internally twinned structure consisting in two variants with Kurdjumov-Sachs orientation relationship. At atomic level, we determine the defect structure of twinning boundaries and fcc/bcc interfaces, and …
We use new equations for the interstitial impurity diffusion fluxes under strain to study impurity atom redistribution in the vicinity of dislocations. Two levels of simulation are applied. The first one is evaluation of coefficients that determine the influence of strain tensor components on interstitial diffusion fluxes in FCC structures. For this purpose we have developed a model into the framework of a molecular static method taking into account an atom environment both near the interstitial site and for the saddle-point configuration. The second level is modeling the interstitial segregat…
The compositional ordering of Ag, Pb, Sb, Te ions in (AgSbTe$_{2}$)$_{x}$(PbTe)$_{2(1-x)}$ systems possessing a NaCl structure is studied using a Coulomb lattice gas (CLG) model on a face-centered cubic (fcc) lattice and Monte Carlo simulations. Our results show different possible microstructural orderings. Ordered superlattice structures formed out of AgSbTe$_{2}$ layers separated by Pb$_{2}$Te$_{2}$ layers are observed for a large range of $x$ values. For $x=0.5$, we see an array of tubular structures formed by AgSbTe$_{2}$ and Pb$_{2}$Te$_{2}$ blocks. For $x=1$, AgSbTe$_{2}$ has a body-cent…
The magnetic phase diagram at zero external field of an ensemble of dipoles with uniaxial anisotropy on a FCC lattice is investigated from tempered Monte Carlo simulations. The uniaxial anisotropy is characterized by a random distribution of easy axes and its magnitude $λ_u$ is the driving force of disorder and consequently frustration. The phase diagram, separating the paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, quasi long range ordered ferromagnetic and spin-glass regions is thus considered in the temperature, $λ_u$ plane. This system is aimed at modeling the magnetic phase diagram of supracrystals of magn…

The diffusion kinetics in a CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy is investigated by a combined radiotracer--interdiffusion experiment applied to a pseudo-binary Co$_{15}$Cr$_{20}$Fe$_{20}$Mn$_{20}$Ni$_{25}$ / Co$_{25}$Cr$_{20}$Fe$_{20}$Mn$_{20}$Ni$_{15}$ couple. As a result, the composition-dependent tracer diffusion coefficients of Co, Cr, Fe and Mn are determined. The elements are characterized by significantly different diffusion rates, with Mn being the fastest element and Co being the slowest one. The elements having originally equiatomic concentration through the diffusion couple are found to r…
Results are presented on analytic and computational analyses of the spin states associated with a 3D fcc lattice composed of ABC stacked kagome planes of magnetic ions with only long-range dipole-dipole interactions. Extending previous work on the 2D kagome system, where discrete six-fold discrete degeneracy of the ground state was revealed [Holden et al. Phys. Rev. B 91, 224425 (2015)], we show that the 3D lattice exhibits a continuous degeneracy characterized by just two spherical angles involving six sublattice spin vectors. Application of a Heat Bath Monte Carlo algorithm shows that therma…
The phase stability of fcc and bcc magnetic binary Fe-Cr, Fe-Ni, Cr-Ni alloys and ternary Fe-Cr-Ni alloys is investigated using a combination of density functional theory (DFT), Cluster Expansion (CE) and Magnetic Cluster Expansion (MCE). Energies, magnetic moments, and volumes of more than 500 alloy structures are evaluated using DFT, and the most stable magnetic configurations are compared with experimental data. Deviations from the Vegard law in fcc Fe-Cr-Ni alloys, associated with non-linear variation of atomic magnetic moments as functions of alloy composition, are observed. Accuracy of t…
Using atomistic Monte Carlo simulations, we investigated the impact of the interface on the structural properties of iron and copper (Fe/Cu) magnetic multilayers grown by Voronoï diagram. Interest in magnetic multilayers has recently emerged as they are shown to be promising candidates for magnetic storage media, magneto-resistive sensors, and personalized medical treatment. As these artificial materials show large differences in properties compared to conventional ones, many experimental and theoretical works have been dedicated on shedding light on these differences and tremendous results ha…
Radiation-induced segregation (RIS) of solutes in materials exposed to irradiation is a well-known problem. It affects the life-time of nuclear reactor core components by favouring radiation-induced degradation phenomena such as hardening and embrittlement. In this work, RIS tendencies in face-centered cubic (fcc) Ni-X (X = Cr, Fe, Ti, Mn, Si, P) dilute binary alloys are examined. The goal is to investigate the driving forces and kinetic mechanisms behind the experimentally observed segregation. By means of ab initio calculations, point-defect stabilities and interactions with solutes are dete…
Surfaces bombarded with low energy ion beams often display development of self assembled patterns and quasi-periodic structures. Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations have been performed to describe ion sputtered Tantalum surfaces. A weak nonlinearity in the relaxation process has been introduced and the results show that the Positive Schwoebel barrier, produced by the nonlinear Hamiltonian, is necessary in describing ion bombarded Tantalum surfaces. Furthermore, their scaling exponents suggest presence of a class other than KPZ.

Effect of surface nanostructure on temperature programmed reaction spectroscopy: First-principles kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of CO oxidation at RuO2(110)
We derive an Ising Hamiltonian for kinetic simulations involving interstitial and vacancy defects in binary alloys. Our model, which we term `ABVI', incorporates solute transport by both interstitial defects and vacancies into a mathematically-consistent framework , and thus represents a generalization to the widely-used ABV model for alloy evolution simulations. The Hamiltonian captures the three possible interstitial configurations in a binary alloy: A-A, A-B, and B-B, which makes it particularly useful for irradiation damage simulations. All the constants of the Hamiltonian are expressed in…
In this work we introduce the Object Kinetic Monte Carlo (OKMC) simulator MMonCa and simulate the defect evolution in three different materials. We start by explaining the theory of OKMC and showing some details of how such theory is implemented by creating generic structures and algorithms in the objects that we want to simulate. Then we successfully reproduce simulated results for defect evolution in iron, silicon and tungsten using our simulator and compare with available experimental data and similar simulations. The comparisons validate MMonCa showing that it is powerful and flexible enou…
We present a density-functional theory based kinetic Monte Carlo study of CO oxidation at the (111) facet of RuO$_2$. We compare the detailed insight into elementary processes, steady-state surface coverages and catalytic activity to equivalent published simulation data for the frequently studied RuO$_2$(110) facet. Qualitative differences are identified in virtually every aspect ranging from binding energetics over lateral interactions to the interplay of elementary processes at the different active sites. Nevertheless, particularly at technologically relevant elevated temperatures, near-ambi…
Sampling minimum energy grain boundary (GB) structures in the five-dimensional crystallographic phase space can provide much-needed insight into how GB crystallography affects various interfacial properties. However, the complexity and number of parameters involved often limits the extent of this exploration to a small set of interfaces. In this article, we present a fast Monte Carlo scheme for generating zero-Kelvin, low energy GB structures in the five-dimensional crystallographic phase space. The Monte Carlo trial moves include removal and insertion of atoms in the GB region, which create a…
The radiofrequency dielectric response of the lead-free Ba(Zr$_{0.5}$Ti$_{0.5}$)O$_3$ relaxor ferroelectric is simulated using a coarse-grained Hamiltonian. This concept, taken from Real-Space Renormalization Group theories, allows depicting the collective behavior of correlated local modes gathered in blocks. Free-energy barriers for their thermally activated collective hopping are deduced from this {\it ab-initio}-based approach, and used as input data of Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. The resulting numerical scheme allows to simulate the dielectric response for external field frequencies …
We present a comparison of the kinetic Activation-Relaxation Technique (k-ART) and the Self-Evolving Atomistic Kinetic Monte Carlo (SEAKMC), two off-lattice, on-the-fly kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) techniques that were recently used to solve several materials science problems. We show that if the initial displacements are localized the dimer method and the Activation-Relaxation Technique \emph{nouveau} provide similar performance. We also show that k-ART and SEAKMC, although based on different approximations, are in agreement with each other, as demonstrated by the examples of 50 vacancies in a 1…
A kinetic Monte Carlo simulations with model asymmetry in binary Fe-Cu alloy leading to the same microstructure are presented. A method based on thermodynamic data for calculation of interatomic potentials dependent on model asymmetry is presented and evaluated. Results show that kinetic pathways are sensitive to model asymmetry and are compared to the classical growth and coarsening theories. Experimental diffusion data is used and compared to simulation results to determine a realistic combination for simulations.
In this study, a variational method for the inverse problem of self-assembly, i.e., a reconstruction of the interparticle interaction potential of a given structure, is applied to three-dimensional crystals. According to the method, the interaction potential is derived as a function that maximizes the free-energy functional of the one- and two-particle density distribution functions. The interaction potentials of the target crystals, including those with face-centered cubic (fcc), body-centered cubic (bcc), and simple hexagonal (shx) lattices, are obtained by numerical maximization of the func…
Studies of concentration and temperature dependencies of precipitation kinetics in iron-copper alloys using kinetic monte carlo and stochastic statistical simulations
The kinetic Monte Carlo method is used to model the dynamic properties of proton diffusion in anhydrous proton conductors. The results have been discussed with reference to a two-step process called the Grotthuss mechanism. There is a widespread belief that this mechanism is responsible for fast proton mobility. We showed in detail that the relative frequency of reorientation and diffusion processes is crucial for the conductivity. Moreover, the current dependence on proton concentration has been analyzed. In order to test our microscopic model the proton transport in polymer electrolyte membr…
