The universal scaling function of the square lattice Ising model in a magnetic field is obtained numerically via Baxter's variational corner transfer matrix approach. The high precision numerical data is in perfect agreement with the remarkable field theory results obtained by Fonseca and Zamolodchikov, as well as with many previously known exact and numerical results for the 2D Ising model. This includes excellent agreement with analytic results for the magnetic susceptibility obtained by Orrick, Nickel, Guttmann and Perk. In general the high precision of the numerical results underlines the potential and full power of the variational corner transfer matrix approach.
Based on the results published recently [SciPost Phys. 7, 026 (2019)], the influence of surfaces and boundary fields are calculated for the ferromagnetic anisotropic square lattice Ising model on finite lattices as well as in the finite-size scaling limit. Starting with the open cylinder, we independently apply boundary fields on both sides which can be either homogeneous or staggered, representing different combinations of boundary conditions. We confirm several predictions from scaling theory, conformal field theory and renormalisation group theory: we explicitly show that anisotropic coupli…
I propose a variational approach to maximum pseudolikelihood inference of the Ising model. The variational algorithm is more computationally efficient, and does a better job predicting out-of-sample correlations than $L_2$ regularized maximum pseudolikelihood inference as well as mean field and isolated spin pair approximations with pseudocount regularization. The key to the approach is a variational energy that regularizes the inference problem by shrinking the couplings towards zero, while still allowing some large couplings to explain strong correlations. The utility of the variational pseu…
We present detailed calculations for the partition function and the free energy of the finite two-dimensional square lattice Ising model with periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions, variable aspect ratio, and anisotropic couplings, as well as for the corresponding universal free energy finite-size scaling functions. Therefore, we review the dimer mapping, as well as the interplay between its topology and the different types of boundary conditions. As a central result, we show how both the finite system as well as the scaling form decay into contributions for the bulk, a characteristic f…
We introduce a new variational approach to the stationary state of kinetic Ising-like models. The approach is based on the cluster expansion of the entropy term appearing in a functional which is minimized by the system history. We rederive a known mean-field theory and propose a new method, here called diamond approximation, which turns out to be more accurate and faster than other methods of comparable computational complexity.
We have dramatically extended the zero field susceptibility series at both high and low temperature of the Ising model on the triangular and honeycomb lattices, and used these data and newly available further terms for the square lattice to calculate a number of terms in the scaling function expansion around both the ferromagnetic and, for the square and honeycomb lattices, the antiferromagnetic critical point.
We present a systematic method to calculate the universal scaling functions for the critical Casimir force and the according potential of the two-dimensional Ising model with various boundary conditions. Therefore we start with the dimer representation of the corresponding partition function $Z$ on an $L\times M$ square lattice, wrapped around a torus with aspect ratio $ρ=L/M$. By assuming periodic boundary conditions and translational invariance in at least one direction, we systematically reduce the problem to a $2\times2$ transfer matrix representation. For the torus we first reproduce the …
We obtain an explicit expression for the multipoint energy correlations of a non solvable two-dimensional Ising models with nearest neighbor ferromagnetic interactions plus a weak finite range interaction of strength $λ$, in a scaling limit in which we send the lattice spacing to zero and the temperature to the critical one. Our analysis is based on an exact mapping of the model into an interacting lattice fermionic theory, which generalizes the one originally used by Schultz, Mattis and Lieb for the nearest neighbor Ising model. The interacting model is then analyzed by a multiscale method fi…
We study the decay of the false vacuum in the scaling Ising and tricritical Ising field theories using the Truncated Conformal Space Approach and compare the numerical results to theoretical predictions in the thin wall limit. In the Ising case, the results are consistent with previous studies on the quantum spin chain and the $φ^4$ quantum field theory; in particular we confirm that while the theoretical predictions get the dependence of the bubble nucleation rate on the latent heat right, they are off by a model dependent overall coefficient. The tricritical Ising model allows us on the othe…
The 2-dimensional Ising model on a square lattice is investigated with a variational autoencoder in the non-vanishing field case for the purpose of extracting the crossover region between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. The encoded latent variable space is found to provide suitable metrics for tracking the order and disorder in the Ising configurations that extends to the extraction of a crossover region in a way that is consistent with expectations. The extracted results achieve an exceptional prediction for the critical point as well as agreement with previously published results …
We report an effective functional form for the spin-spin correlation function of the 2D Ising model as a function of temperature and field. Although the Ising model has been well studied, no analytical result for the spin-spin correlation function exists for arbitrary magnetic fields and temperatures. We show the validity of our form by comparison with simulations using the Wolff algorithm, and obtain remarkable precision by including analytic corrections to scaling. Given recent interest in comparing biomembrane heterogeneity to Ising criticality, our spin-spin correlation function may be use…
In the 1977 paper \cite{MTW} of B. McCoy, C. Tracy and T. Wu it was shown that the limiting two-point correlation function in the two-dimensional Ising model is related to a second order nonlinear Painlevé function. This result identified the scaling function as a tau-function and the corresponding connection problem was solved by C. Tracy in 1991 \cite{T}, see also the works by C. Tracy and H. Widom in 1998 \cite{TW}. Here we present the solution to a certain generalized version of the above connection problem which is obtained through a refinement of the techniques in \cite{B}.
The scaling function of the 2D Ising model in a magnetic field on the square and triangular lattices is obtained numerically via Baxter's variational corner transfer matrix approach. The use of the Aharony-Fisher non-linear scaling variables allowed us to perform calculations sufficiently away from the critical point to obtain very high precision data, which convincingly confirm all predictions of the scaling and universality hypotheses. The results are in excellent agreement with the field theory calculations of Fonseca and Zamolodchikov as well as with many previously known exact and numeric…
We present and solve the Replica Symmetric equations in the context of the Replica Cluster Variational Method for the 2D random bond Ising model (including the 2D Edwards-Anderson spin glass model). First we solve a linearized version of these equations to obtain the phase diagrams of the model on the square and triangular lattices. In both cases the spin-glass transition temperatures and the tricritical point estimations improve largely over the Bethe predictions. Moreover, we show that this phase diagram is consistent with the behavior of inference algorithms on single instances of the probl…
We provide a simple derivation of the constant factor in the short-distance asymptotics of the tau-function associated with the $2$-point function of the two-dimensional Ising model. This factor was first computed by C. Tracy in \cite{T} via an exponential series expansion of the correlation function. Further simplifications in the analysis are due to Tracy and Widom \cite{TW} using Fredholm determinant representations of the correlation function and Wiener-Hopf approximation results for the underlying resolvent operator. Our method relies on an action integral representation of the tau-functi…
The full replica symmetry breaking free energy of the Ising spin glass on random regular graphs is given by the solutions of two auxiliary variational problems inside a global (physical) variational problem on the order parameter. In this paper, we provide a detailed study of the auxiliary variational problems. We get the self-consistency equation for the auxiliary order parameter and obtain the existence and uniqueness results. We also show that the full replica symmetry breaking free energy functional recovers the discrete replica symmetry breaking solutions, by imposing some proper conditio…
A new approximation of the cluster variational method is introduced for the three-dimensional Ising model on the simple cubic lattice. The maximal cluster is, as far as we know, the largest ever used in this method. A message-passing algorithm, generalized belief propagation, is used to minimize the variational free energy. Convergence properties and performance of the algorithm are investigated. The approximation is used to compute the spontaneous magnetization, which is then compared to previous results. Using the present results as the last step in a sequence of three cluster variational ap…
We examine the Ising model at its critical temperature with an external magnetic field $h a^{\frac{15}{8}}$ on $a\mathbb{Z}^2$ for $a,h >0$. A new proof of exponential decay of the truncated two-point correlation functions is presented. It is proven that the mass (inverse correlation length) is of the order of $h^\frac{8}{15}$ in the limit $h \to 0$. This was previously proven with CLE-methods in $\lbrack 1 \rbrack$. Our new proof uses instead the random current representation of the Ising model and its backbone exploration. The method further relies on recent couplings to the random cluster m…
Based on the results published recently [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 50, 065201 (2017)], the universal finite-size contributions to the free energy of the square lattice Ising model on the $L\times M$ rectangle, with open boundary conditions in both directions, are calculated exactly in the finite-size scaling limit $L,M\to\infty$, $T\to T_\mathrm{c}$, with fixed temperature scaling variable $x\propto(T/T_\mathrm{c}-1)M$ and fixed aspect ratio $ρ\propto L/M$. We derive exponentially fast converging series for the related Casimir potential and Casimir force scaling functions. At the critical point…
We study finite size scaling for the magnetic observables of an impurity residing at the endpoint of an open quantum Ising chain in a transverse magnetic field, realized by locally rescaling the magnetic field by a factor $μ\neq 1$. In the homogeneous chain limit at $μ= 1$, we find the expected finite size scaling for the longitudinal impurity magnetization, with no specific scaling for the transverse magnetization. At variance, in the classical impurity limit, $μ= 0$, we recover finite scaling for the longitudinal magnetization, while the transverse one basically does not scale. For this case…
We consider the three-dimensional site-diluted Ising model with power-law correlated defects and study the critical behavior of the second-moment correlation length and the magnetic susceptibility in the high-temperature phase. By comparing, for various defect correlation strengths, the extracted critical exponents $ν$ and $γ$ with the results of our previous finite-size scaling study, we consolidate the exponent estimates.
The Critical Finite Size Scaling Relation of the Order-Parameter Probability Distribution for the Three-Dimensional Ising Model on the Creutz Cellular Automaton
We review some recent investigations of the 3d plaquette Ising model. This displays a strong first-order phase transition with unusual scaling properties due to the size-dependent degeneracy of the low-temperature phase. In particular, the leading scaling correction is modified from the usual inverse volume behaviour 1/L^3 to 1/L^2. The degeneracy also has implications for the magnetic order in the model which has an intermediate nature between local and global order and gives rise to novel fracton topological defects in a related quantum Hamiltonian.
We study the scaling of the average cluster size and percolation strength of geometrical clusters for the two-dimensional Ising model. By means of Monte Carlo simulations and a finite-size scaling analysis we discuss the appearance of corrections to scaling for different definitions of cluster sets. We find that including all percolating clusters, or excluding only clusters that percolate in one but not the other direction, leads to smaller corrections to scaling for the average cluster size as compared to the other definitions considered. The percolation strength is less sensitive to the defi…

The criticality of the (2+1)-dimensional S=1 transverse-field Ising model is investigated with the numerical diagonalization method. The scaling behavior is improved by tuning the coupling-constant parameters; the S=1 spin model allows us to incorporate a variety of interactions such as the single-ion anisotropy and the biquadratic interactions. Simulating the clusters with N=6,8,...,20 spins, we estimate the critical indices as 1/ν=1.586(6) and η=0.034(4).
We introduce a universal combination of susceptibility and correlation length in the 3D Ising model, depending both on temperature and external magnetic field. Starting from a parametric representation of the equation of state, we study its behaviour close to the critical point. The results we derive can be used as a sort of "reference frame" to chart the scaling region of the 3D Ising universality class. More specifically, we focus on instances of Ising behaviour in finite temperature QCD and, among these, we are particularly interested on the critical ending point in the finite density, fini…
We describe a method for approximating the universal scaling functions for the Ising model in a field. By making use of parametric coordinates, the free energy scaling function has a polynomial series everywhere. Its form is taken to be a sum of the simplest functions that contain the singularities which must be present: the Langer essential singularity and the Yang--Lee edge singularity. Requiring that the function match series expansions in the low- and high-temperature zero-field limits fixes the parametric coordinate transformation. For the two-dimensional Ising model, we show that this pr…
Variational autoencoders employ an encoding neural network to generate a probabilistic representation of a data set within a low-dimensional space of latent variables followed by a decoding stage that maps the latent variables back to the original variable space. Once trained, a statistical ensemble of simulated data realizations can be obtained by randomly assigning values to the latent variables that are subsequently processed by the decoding section of the network. To determine the accuracy of such a procedure when applied to lattice models, an autoencoder is here trained on a thermal equil…
We study numerically the phase-ordering kinetics of the two-dimensional site-diluted Ising model. The data can be interpreted in a framework motivated by renormalization-group concepts. Apart from the usual fixed point of the non-diluted system, there exist two disorder fixed points, characterized by logarithmic and power-law growth of the ordered domains. This structure gives rise to a rich scaling behavior, with an interesting crossover due to the competition between fixed points, and violation of superuniversality.
It is often assumed that for treating numerical (or experimental) data on continuous transitions the formal analysis derived from the Renormalization Group Theory can only be applied over a narrow temperature range, the "critical region"; outside this region correction terms proliferate rendering attempts to apply the formalism hopeless. This pessimistic conclusion follows largely from a choice of scaling variables and scaling expressions which is traditional but which is very inefficient for data covering wide temperature ranges. An alternative "extended caling" approach can be made where the…
We solve for the time-dependent finite-size scaling functions of the 1D transverse-field Ising chain during a linear-in-time ramp of the field through the quantum critical point. We then simulate Mott-insulating bosons in a tilted potential, an experimentally-studied system in the same equilibrium universality class, and demonstrate that universality holds for the dynamics as well. We find qualitatively athermal features of the scaling functions, such as negative spin correlations, and show that they should be robustly observable within present cold atom experiments.
