We consider a quantum two-dimensional O(N)xO(2)/O(N-2)xO(2) nonlinear sigma model for frustrated spin systems and formulate its 1/N-expansion which involves fluctuating scalar and vector fields describing kinematic and dynamic interactions, respectively. The ground state phase diagram of this model is obtained within the 1/N-expansion and 2+εrenormalization group approaches. The temperature dependence of correlation length in the renormalized classical and quantum critical regimes is discussed. In the region of the symmetry broken ground state ρ_in<ρ_out, χ_in<χ_out (rho_in,out and chi_in,out are the in- and out-of-plane spin stiffnesses and susceptibilities), where the mass M_μof the vector field can be arbitrarily small, physical properties at finite temperatures are universal functions of rho_in,out, chi_in,out, and temperature T. For small M_μthese properties show a crossover from low- to high temperature regime at T \sim M_μ. For ρ_in>ρ_out or χ_in>χ_out finite-temperature properties are universal functions only at sufficiently large M_μ. The high-energy behaviour in the latter regime is similar to the Landau-pole dependence of the physical charge e in quantum electrodynamics, with mass M_μplaying a role of e^{-1}. The application of the results obtained to the triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet is considered.
We propose to use the Contractor Renormalization (CORE) technique in order to derive effective models for quantum magnets in a magnetic field. CORE is a powerful non-perturbative technique that can reduce the complexity of a given microscopic model by focusing on the low-energy part. We provide a detailed analysis of frustrated spin ladders which have been widely studied in the past: in particular, we discuss how to choose the building block and emphasize the use of their reduced density matrix. With a good choice of basis, CORE is able to reproduce the existence or not of magnetization platea…
We show that the two-dimensional density-matrix renormalization analysis is useful to detect the symmetry breaking in the fermionic model on a triangular lattice. Under the cylindrical boundary conditions with chemical potentials on edge sites, we find that the open edges work as perturbation to select the strongest correlations {\it only in the presence of a long range order}. We also demonstrate that the ordinary size scaling analysis on the charge gap as well as that of the local charge density under this boundary condition could determine the metal-insulator phase boundary, which scales al…
Entanglement renormalization techniques are applied to numerically investigate the ground state of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on a kagome lattice. Lattices of N={36,144,inf} sites with periodic boundary conditions are considered. For the infinite lattice, the best approximation to the ground state is found to be a valence bond crystal (VBC) with a 36-site unit cell, compatible with a previous proposal. Its energy per site, E=-0.43221, is an exact upper bound and is lower than the energy of any previous (gapped or algebraic) spin liquid candidate for the ground state.
Spontaneous current orders due to odd-parity order parameters attract increasing attention in various strongly correlated metals. Here, we discover a novel spin-fluctuation-driven charge loop current (cLC) mechanism based on the functional renormalization group (fRG) theory. The present mechanism leads to the ferro-cLC order in a simple frustrated chain Hubbard model. The cLC appears between the antiferromagnetic and $d$-wave superconducting ($d$SC) phases. While the microscopic origin of the cLC has a close similarity to that of the $d$SC, the cLC transition temperature $T_{\rm cLC}$ can be h…
We study the ground state properties of the two-dimensional spin-1/2 J_1-J_2-Heisenberg model on a square lattice, within diagrammatic approximations using an auxiliary fermion formulation with exact projection. In a first approximation we assume a phenomenological width of the pseudofermion spectral function to calculate the magnetization, susceptibilities and the spin correlation length within RPA, demonstrating the appearance of a paramagnetic phase between the Neel ordered and Collinear ordered phases, at sufficiently large pseudo fermion damping. Secondly we use a Functional Renormalizati…
We study the phase diagram of a frustrated spin-1/2 ferromagnetic chain with anisotropic exchange interactions in an external magnetic field, using the density matrix renormalization group method. We show that an easy-axis anisotropy enhances the tendency towards multimagnon bound states, while an easy-plane anisotropy favors chirally ordered phases. In particular, a moderate easy-plane anisotropy gives rise to a quantum phase transition at intermediate magnetization. We argue that this transition is related to the finite-field phase transition experimentally observed in the spin-1/2 compound …
The pseudofermion functional renormalization group (PFFRG) method has proven to be a powerful numerical approach to treat frustrated quantum spin systems. In its usual implementation, however, the complex fermionic representation of spin operators introduces unphysical Hilbert space sectors which renders an application at finite temperatures inaccurate. In this work, we formulate a general functional renormalization group approach based on Majorana fermions to overcome these difficulties. We, particularly, implement spin operators via an $SO(3)$ symmetric Majorana representation which does not…
In the field of quantum magnetism, the advent of numerous spin-orbit assisted Mott insulating compounds, such as the family of Kitaev materials, has led to a growing interest in studying general spin models with non-diagonal interactions that do not retain the SU(2) invariance of the underlying spin degrees of freedom. However, the exchange frustration arising from these non-diagonal and often bond-directional interactions for two- and three-dimensional lattice geometries poses a serious challenge for numerical many-body simulation techniques. In this paper, we present an extended formulation …
We study the fully gapped chiral Mott insulator (CMI) of frustrated Bose-Hubbard models on ladders and two-dimensional lattices by perturbative strong-coupling analysis and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). First we show the existence of a low-lying exciton state on all geometries carrying the correct quantum numbers responsible for the condensation of excitons and formation of the CMI in the intermediate interaction regime. Then we perform systematic DMRG simulations on several two-leg ladder systems with $π$-flux and carefully characterize the two quantum phase transitions. We dis…
We investigate non-equilibrium properties of the frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the triangular lattice. Nonequilibrium critical relaxation of frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnets shows a dynamic transition (or, at least, sharp crossover) at the same temperature $T_{\rm u}=0.282 J$ as for static properties due to unbinding of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-vortices. We show that starting from the high-temperature initial state, due to presence of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-vortices in the considering system, in a broad temperature range $T<T_{\rm u}$ the dynamic properties in the intermediate time range are s…
A review of the Contractor Renormalization (CORE) method, as a systematic derivation of the low energy effective hamiltonian, is given, with emphasis on its differences and advantages over traditional perturbative (weak/strong links) real space RG. For the low energy physics of the 2D Hubbard model, we derive the plaquette bosons (projected SO(5)) model which connects the microscopic model to phases and phenomenology of high-Tc cuprates. For the S=1/2 Pyrochlore and Kagome antiferromagnets, the effective hamiltonians predict spin-disordered, lattice symmetry breaking, ground states with a larg…
We study states with spontaneous spin current, emerging in frustrated antiferromagnetic spin-$S$ chains subject to a strong external magnetic field. As a numerical tool, we use a non-Abelian symmetry realization of the density matrix renormalization group. The field dependence of the order parameter and the critical exponents are presented for zigzag chains with S=1/2, 1, 3/2, and 2.
We study a model of three $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains weakly coupled by on-rung and plaquette-diagonal interchain interactions. It is shown that the model exhibits a critical phase with central charge C=2 and belongs to the class of ``chirally stabilized'' liquids recently introduced by Andrei, Douglas, and Jerez. By allowing anisotropic interactions in spin space, we find an exact solution at a Toulouse point which captures all universal properties of the model, including the SU(2) symmetric case. At the new critical point the massless degrees of freedom are described in …
We study a two-dimensional frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the windmill lattice consisting of triangular and dual honeycomb lattice sites. In the classical ground state the spins on different sublattices are decoupled, but quantum and thermal fluctuations drive the system into a coplanar state via an "order from disorder" mechanism. We obtain the finite temperature phase diagram using renormalization group approaches. In the coplanar regime, the relative U$(1)$ phase between the spins on the two sublattices decouples from the remaining degrees of freedom, and is described by a six-sta…
We use a recently proposed perturbative numerical renormalization group algorithm to investigate ground-state properties of a frustrated three dimensional Heisenberg model on an anisotropic lattice. We analyze the ground state energy, the finite size spin gap and the static magnetic structure factor. We find in two dimensions a frustration-induced gapless spin liquid state which separates two magnetically ordered phases. In the spin liquid state, the magnetic structure factor shows evidence that this state is made of nearly disconnected chains. This spin liquid state is unstable against unfrus…
We present a numerical study of the magnetization process of frustrated quantum spin-S chains with S=1, 3/2, 2 as well as the classical limit. Using the exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization techniques, we provide evidence that a plateau at one third of the saturation magnetization exists in the magnetization curve of frustrated spin-S chains with S>1/2. Similar to the case of S=1/2, this plateau state breaks the translational symmetry of the Hamiltonian and realizes an up-up-down pattern in the spin component parallel to the external field. Our study further shows that this…
Motivated by the intriguing properties of the vanadium spin tube Na2V3O7, we show that an effective spin-chirality model similar to that of standard Heisenberg odd-legged S=1/2 spin tubes can be derived for frustrated inter-ring couplings, but with a spin-chirality coupling constant alpha that can be arbitrarily small. Using density matrix renormalization group and analytical arguments, we show that, while spontaneous dimerization is always present, solitons become bound into low-lying singlets as alpha is reduced. Experimental implications for strongly frustrated tubes are discussed.
We consider the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on two one-dimensional frustrated lattices, double-tetrahedral chain and octahedral chain, with almost dispersionless (flat) lowest magnon band in a strong magnetic field. Using the localized magnons picture, we construct an effective description of the one-dimensional chains with triangle and square traps within the strong coupling approximation. We perform extensive exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group calculations to check the validity of the obtained effective Hamiltonians by comparison with the initial m…
Magnetic field effects on the one-dimensional frustrated ferromagnetic chain are studied by means of effective field theory approaches in combination with numerical calculations utilizing Lanczos diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group method. The nature of the ground state is shown to change from a spin-density-wave region to a nematic-like one upon approaching the saturation magnetization. The excitation spectrum is analyzed and the behavior of the single spin-flip excitation gap is studied in detail, including the emergent finite-size corrections.
Using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group method, we determined the phase diagram of a frustrated antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac 1 2$ ladder at zero temperature. Two spin-gapped phases, the Haldane phase and the singlet phase, are identified. A phase transition between the two phases occurs at any non-zero value of frustration coupling $J_{\times}$. On the phase boundary, the spin gap vanishes for sufficiently small $J_{\times}$. Crossing this non-gapped line, the transition is of second order, while of first order for larger $J_{\times}$. Striking frustration effects are predicted for lad…
Pseudo-Majorana functional renormalization for frustrated XXZ spin-1/2 models with field or magnetization along the spin-Z direction at finite temperature
Using the density-matrix renormalization group, we determine the phase diagram of the spin 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a honeycomb lattice with a nearest neighbor interaction J1 and a frustrating, next-neighbor exchange J2. As frustration increases, the ground state exhibits Neel, plaquette and dimer orders, with critical points at J2/J1 = 0.22 and 0.35. We observe that both the spin gap and the corresponding order parameters vanish continuously at both the critical points, indicating the presence of deconfined quantum criticality.
We consider the spin-$1/2$ XY frustrated antiferromagnetic Heisenberg honeycomb model. There is an unclear intermediate region in the ground state phase diagram of the model. The most recognized phases are the quantum spin-liquid (QSL) and the antiferromagnetic Ising ordering. From the viewpoint of the quantum correlations, the QSL phase is expected to be entangled. Motivated by this fact, we have calculated the concurrence, the quantum discord (QD), and the entanglement entropy, by using numerical Lanczos and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods. Our results explicitly show tha…
Single crystal elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments are performed on the frustrated ferro-antiferromagnet SrZnVO(PO4)2 in high magnetic fields. The fully polarized state, the presaturation phase and the columnar-antiferromagnetic phase just bellow the presaturation phase were investigated. The observed renormalization of spin wave bandwidths, re-distribution of intensities between different branches and non-linearities in the magnetization curve are all indicative of strong deviations from classical spin wave theory. The previously observed presaturation transition is attribute…
The static structure factor S(q) of frustrated spin-1/2 chains with isotropic exchange and a singlet ground state (GS) diverges at wave vector q_m when the GS has quasi-long-range order (QLRO) with periodicity 2π/q_m but S(q_m) is finite in bond-order-wave (BOW) phases with finite-range spin correlations. Exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations of S(q) indicate a decoupled phase with QLRO and q_m = π/2 in chains with large antiferromagnetic exchange between second neighbors. S(q_m) identifies quantum phase transitions based on GS spin correlations.
The self-consistent treatment of real and imaginary renormalizations in the dynamic spin susceptibility for the frustrated Heisenberg model reproduces for cuprates at low doping: a spin spectrum, a saddle point for q near (pi/2,pi/2), nearly constant q-integrated susceptibility for energy less than 150 meV and a scaling law. Frustration increase (optimally doped case) leads to a stripe scenario with a saddle point at q near (pi,pi/2) and $χ_{2D}(ω)$ peak near 30meV. The obtained $χ(\mathbf{q},ω)$ describes neutron scattering results and leads to well-known temperature transport anomalies in do…
We investigate the zero-temperature quantum phases of a quasi-one-dimensional zigzag chain of dipoles that are polarized in a plane by an external electric field. Since the Hamiltonian contains nearest-neighbor (NN) and next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) hopping and interaction terms, this model allows frustration which induces phases that can be interesting and unusual. By using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm, we produce a complex phase diagram. This is an extension of an earlier work by Wang et. al. [Phys. Rev. A 96, 043615 (2017)].
We investigate the dynamical quadrupole structure factor of a spin-1/2 $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$ Heisenberg chain with competing ferromagnetic $J_{1}$ and antiferromagnetic $J_{2}$ in a magnetic field by exploiting density-matrix renormalization group techniques. In a field-induced spin nematic regime, we observe gapless excitations at $q=π$ according to quasi-long-range antiferro-quadrupole correlations. The gapless excitation mode has a quadratic form at the saturation, while it changes into a linear dispersion as the magnetization decreases.
Recently it was argued that quantum phase transitions can be radically different from classical phase transitions with as a highlight the 'deconfined critical points' exhibiting fractionalization of quantum numbers due to Berry phase effects. Such transitions are supposed to occur in frustrated ('$J_1$-$J_2$') quantum magnets. We have developed a novel renormalization approach for such systems which is fully respecting the underlying lattice structure. According to our findings, another profound phenomenon is around the corner: a fluctuation induced (order-out-of-disorder) first order transiti…
Single crystals of the frustrated S=1/2 ferro-antiferromagnetic proximate square lattice material SrZnZnVO(PO$_4$)$_2$ are studied in magnetometric, calorimetric, neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The measured spin wave spectrum reveals a substantial degree of magnetic frustration and a large quantum renormalization of the exchange constants. The H-T magnetic phase diagram is established. It features a novel pre-saturation phase, which appears for only one particular field orientation. The results are discussed noting the similarities and differences with the pr…
We theoretically study a spin-spin correlation enhanced by non-magnetic impurities in a frustrated two-leg spin ladder. The frustration is introduced by the next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction in the leg direction in the antiferromagnetic two-leg spin ladder. The spin-spin correlation function around impurity site is calculated by the density-matrix renormalization-group method. We find that the spin-spin correlation is enhanced around impurity site with the wavenumber reflecting the frustration. As increasing the frustration, the wavenumber is shifted from commensurate to inco…
We study the ground-state properties of weakly frustrated Heisenberg ferrimagnetic chains with nearest and next-nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange interactions and two types of alternating sublattice spins S_1 > S_2, using 1/S spin-wave expansions, density-matrix renormalization group, and exact- diagonalization techniques. It is argued that the zero-point spin fluctuations completely destroy the classical commensurate- incommensurate continuous transition. Instead, the long-range ferrimagnetic state disappears through a discontinuous transition to a singlet state at a larger value of…
We study the frustrated ferromagnetic spin-1 chains, where the ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor coupling competes with the antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor coupling. We use the density matrix renormalization group to obtain the ground states. Through the analysis of spin-spin correlations we identify the double Haldane phase as well as the ferromagnetic phase. It is shown that the ferromagnetic coupling leads to incommensurate correlations in the double Haldane phase. Such short-range correlations transform continuously into the ferromagnetic instability at the transition to the ferromagn…
We apply a generalization of the time-dependent DMRG to study finite temperature properties of several quantum spin chains, including the frustrated $J_1-J_2$ model. We discuss several practical issues with the method, including use of quantum numbers and finite size effects. We compare with transfer-matrix DMRG, finding that both methods produce excellent results.
A scaling theory of the Kondo lattices with frustrated exchange interactions is developed, criterium of antiferromagnetic ordering and quantum-disordered state being investigated. The calculations taking into account magnon and incoherent spin dynamics are performed. Depending on the bare model parameters, one or two quantum phase transitions into non-magnetic spin-liquid and Kondo Fermi-liquid ground states can occur with increasing the bare coupling constant. Whereas the renormalization of the magnetic moment in the ordered phase can reach orders of magnitude, spin fluctuation frequency and …
By exploiting density-matrix renormalization group techniques, we investigate the dynamical spin structure factor of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions in an applied magnetic field. In a field-induced spin nematic regime, we find gapless longitudinal and gapped transverse spin excitation spectra, in accordance with quasi-long-ranged longitudinal and short-ranged transverse spin correlations, respectively. The gapless point coincides with the dominant longitudinal spin correlation, whereas the gap pos…
We present a Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) study of the ground-state properties of spin-1/2 frustrated $J_1-J_3$ Heisenberg $n_l$-leg ladders (with $n_l$ up to 8). For strong frustration ($J_3/J_1\simeq 0.5$), both even- and odd-leg ladders display a finite gap to spin excitations, which we argue remains finite in the two-dimensional limit. In this regime, on odd-leg ladders the ground state is spontaneously dimerized, in agreement with the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis prediction, while on even-leg ladders the dimer correlations decay exponentially. The magnitude of the dimer order parame…
Ordering of frustrated S=1/2 and 1 XY and Heisenberg spin chains with the competing nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings is studied by exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization-group methods. It is found that the S=1 XY chain exhibits both gapless and gapped `chiral' phases characterized by the spontaneous breaking of parity, in which the long-range order parameter is a chirality, $κ_i = S_i^xS_{i+1}^y-S_i^yS_{i+1}^x$, whereas the spin correlation decays either algebraically or exponentially. Such chiral phases are not realized in the S=1/2 XY chain nor…
By using the density matrix renormalization group method, we investigate ground- and excited-state properties of the e_g-orbital degenerate Hubbard model at quarter filling for two kinds of lattices, zigzag chain and ladder. In the zigzag chain, the system is effectively regarded as a decoupled double chain of the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model, and the spin gap is approximately zero, similar to the case of weakly coupled Heisenberg chains. On the other hand, in the ladder, the spin correlation on the rung remains robust and the spin gap exists.
Frustrated one-dimensional (1D) magnets are known as ideal playgrounds for new exotic quantum phenomena to emerge. We consider an elementary frustrated 1D system: the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ ferromagnetic ($J_1$) Heisenberg chain with next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic ($J_2$) interactions. On the basis of density-matrix renormalization group calculations we show the existence of a finite spin gap at $J_2/|J_1|>1/4$ and we find the ground state in this region to be a valence bond solid (VBS) with spin-singlet dimerization between third-neighbor sites. The VBS is the consequence of spontaneous …
We propose a general non-perturbative scheme that quantitatively maps the low-energy sector of spin-1/2 frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnets to effective Generalized Quantum Dimer Models. We develop the formal lattice independent frame and establish some important results on (i) the locality of the generated Hamiltonians (ii) how full resummations can be performed in this renormalization scheme. The method is then applied to the much debated kagome antiferromagnet for which a fully resummed effective Hamiltonian - shown to capture the essential properties and provide deep insights on the mic…
We investigate magnetic excitations and spin transport properties of a frustrated spin chain with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchange couplings in a magnetic field by density-matrix renormalization group methods. In the field-induced quadrupole and octupole regimes, the low-energy excitation is governed by two- and three-magnon bound states, respectively, so that bound magnon clusters would contribute to the spin transport. We show that spin current correlations decrease when the system goes from the quadrupole regime into the octupole regime. Th…
The quasi-spin correlations in a frustrated quantum spin ladder with one-half magnetization are theoretically studied by using the density-matrix renormalization-group method and the quasi-spin transformation. In this model, the frustration induces a gapless-to-gapful phase transition with a strong rung coupling. The gapful state is observed as the one-half magnetization plateau in the magnetization curve. In the magnetization-plateau state, we find that the quasi-spin dimer has a large expectation value with long-ranged correlations. This result does not only comes in useful to clarify the ma…
The magnetization curve in a frustrated two-leg spin-ladder system is theoretically studied using both analytical and numerical methods. This spin system is mapped onto a hard-core boson system, which is composed of bond-operators describing the triplon excitation. By the analytical method using the mean-field theory on the bond-operators, we show that cusp singularities emerge in the magnetization curve as a function of a magnetic field due to the strong frustration. This originates from a change of number of Fermi points in the bosonic dispersion relation with the applied field. It is analog…
The spin-1/2 J1-J2 antiferromagnet is a prototypical model for frustrated magnetism and one possible candidate for a realization of a spin liquid phase. The generalization of this system on the anisotropic square lattice is given by the J1-J2-J1'-J2' Heisenberg model, which can be treated by a renormalization group (RG) analysis of coupled frustrated chains. The J1-J2-J1'-J2'-model shows an interesting interplay of Néel order, dimerization, and spin liquid behavior. The analytical findings supported by numerical results indicate that for the isotropic model the phase at intermediate coupling s…
In this work we generalize and subsequently apply the Effective Field Renormalization Group technique to the problem of ferro- and antiferromagnetically coupled Ising spins with local anisotropy axes in geometrically frustrated geometries (kagome and pyrochlore lattices). In this framework, we calculate the various ground states of these systems and the corresponding critical points. Excellent agreement is found with exact and Monte Carlo results. The effects of frustration are discussed. As pointed out by other authors, it turns out that the spin ice model can be exactly mapped to the standar…
Magnetization plateaux emerging in quantum spin systems due to spontaneously breaking of translational symmetry have been reported both theoretically and experimentally. The broken symmetry can induce reconstruction of elementary excitations such as Goldstone and Higgs modes, whereas its microscopic mechanism and reconstructed quasi-particle in magnetization-plateau phases have remained unclear so far. Here we theoretically study magnetic excitations in the magnetization-plateau phases of a frustrated spin ladder by using dynamical density-matrix renormalization-group method. Additionally, ana…
We study the low-temperature thermodynamic properties of a number of frustrated quantum antiferromagnets which support localized magnon states in the vicinity of the saturation field. For this purpose we use 1) a mapping of the low-energy degrees of freedom of spin systems onto the hard-core object lattice gases and 2) an exact diagonalization of finite spin systems of up to N=30 sites. The considered spin systems exhibit universal behavior which is determined by a specific hard-core object lattice gas representing the independent localized magnon states. We test the lattice gas description by…
The frustrated isotropic $J_1-J_2$ model with ferromagnetic $J_1$ and anti-ferromagnetic $J_2$ interactions in presence of an axial magnetic field shows many exotic phases, such as vector chiral and multipolar phases. The existing studies of the phase boundaries of these systems are based on the indirect evidences such as correlation functions {\it etc}. In this paper, the phase boundaries of these exotic phases are calculated based on order parameters and jumps in the magnetization. In the strong magnetic field, $Z_2$ symmetry is broken, therefore, order parameter of the vector chiral phase i…
The quantum phases of 2-leg spin-1/2 ladders with skewed rungs are obtained using exact diagonalization of systems with up to 26 spins and by density matrix renormalization group calculations to 500 spins. The ladders have isotropic antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange $J_2 > 0$ between first neighbors in the legs, variable isotropic AF exchange $J_1$ between some first neighbors in different legs, and an unpaired spin per odd-membered ring when $J_1 \gg J_2$. Ladders with skewed rungs and variable $J_1$ have frustrated AF interactions leading to multiple quantum phases: AF at small $J_1$, either F…
The interplay between frustration and quantum fluctuation in magnetic systems is known to be the origin of many exotic states in condensed matter physics. In this paper, we consider a frustrated four-leg spin tube under a magnetic field. This system is a prototype to study the emergence of a nonmagnetic ground state factorizable into local states and the associated order parameter without quantum fluctuation, that appears in a wide variety of frustrated systems. The one-dimensional nature of the system allows us to apply various techniques: a path-integral formulation based on the notion of or…
We investigate a (semi-)metal to insulator transition (MIT) realized in geometrically frustrated electron systems on the basis of the Hubbard model on a three-dimensional pyrochlore lattice and a two-dimensional checkerboard lattice. Using the renormalization group method and mean field analysis, we show that in the half-filling case, MIT occurs as a result of the interplay between geometrical frustration and electron correlation. In the insulating phase, which has a spin gap, the spin rotational symmetry is not broken, while charge ordering exists. The charge ordered state is stabilized so as…
By exploiting density-matrix renormalization group techniques, we investigate the spin dynamics of a spin-1/2 one-dimensional J1-J2 XXZ model with competing ferromagnetic J1 and antiferromagnetic J2 exchange couplings under applied magnetic fields. Numerical results of spin excitation spectra show that in the field-induced spin quadrupole regime, the longitudinal component has a gapless mode and the transverse component has a gapped mode irrespective of the exchange anisotropy. The excitation gap of the transverse spin excitation increases as the exchange anisotropy increases over the XY-like …
Frustrated spin-$1/2$ XXZ zigzag chains relevant to Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ are revisited in the light of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases. Using a density-matrix renormalization group method for infinite systems, we identify projective representations for four distinct time-reversal invariant SPT phases; two parity-symmetric dimer phases near the Heisenberg and XX limits and two parity-broken vector-chiral (VC) dimer phases in between. A small bond alternation in the nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic exchange coupling induces a direct SPT transition between the two distinct VC dime…
Hole-doping effects are investigated on the {\it t-J} ladder model with the linked-tetrahedra structure. We discuss how a metal-insulator transition occurs upon hole doping with particular emphasis on the effects of geometrical frustration. By computing the electron density and the spin correlation function by the density matrix renormalization group, we show that strong frustration triggers a first-order transition to a metallic phase, when holes are doped into the plaquette-singlet phase. By examining spin excitations in a metallic case in detail, we discuss whether the spin-gap phase persis…
The frustrated ferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain is studied by means of a low-energy field theory as well as the density-matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization methods. Firstly, we study the ground-state phase diagram in a magnetic field and find an `even-odd' (EO) phase characterized by bound pairs of magnons in the region of two weakly coupled antiferromagnetic chains. A jump in the magnetization curves signals a first-order transition at the boundary of the EO phase, but otherwise the curves are smooth. Secondly, we discuss thermodynamic properties at zero field, where…
We show that numerical quasi-one-dimensional renormalization group allows accurate study of weakly coupled chains with modest computational effort. We perform a systematic comparison with exact diagonalization results in two and three-leg spin ladders with a transverse Hamiltonian that can involve frustration. Due to the variational nature of the algorithm, the accuracy can be arbitrarily improved enlarging the basis of eigenstates of the density matrix defined in the transverse direction. We observe that the precision of the algorithm is directly correlated to the binding of the chains. We al…
We study the consequences of Coulomb interactions on a system undergoing a putative first order phase transition. In two dimensions (2D), near the critical density, the system is universally unstable to the formation of new intermediate phases, which we call ``electronic microemulsion phases,'' which consist of an intermediate scale mixture of regions of the two competing phases. A correlary is that there can be no direct transition as a function of density from a 2D Wigner crystal to a uniform electron liquid. In 3D, %we find that if the strength of the Coulomb interactions exceeds a critical…
The purpose of the present paper is two-fold. On the one hand, we review some recent studies on the low-temperature strong-field thermodynamic properties of frustrated quantum spin antiferromagnets which admit the so-called localized-magnon eigenstates. One the other hand, we provide some complementary new results. We focus on the linear independence of the localized-magnon states, the estimation of their degeneracy with the help of auxiliary classical lattice-gas models and the analysis of the contribution of these states to thermodynamics.
We employ a recently developed variant of the functional renormalization group method for spin systems, the so-called pseudo Majorana functional renormalization group, to investigate three-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg models at finite temperatures. We study unfrustrated and frustrated Heisenberg systems on the simple cubic and pyrochlore lattices. Comparing our results with other quantum many-body techniques, we demonstrate a high quantitative accuracy of our method. Particularly, for the unfrustrated simple cubic lattice antiferromagnet ordering temperatures obtained from finite-size scali…
