A general formulation of the Boundary Quantum Inverse Scattering Method is given which is applicable in cases where $R$-matrix solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation do not have the property of crossing unitarity. Suitably modified forms of the reflection equations are presented which permit the construction of a family of commuting transfer matrices. As an example, we apply the formalism to determine the most general solutions of the reflection equations for a solution of the Yang-Baxter equation with underlying symmetry given by the Drinfeld double $D(D_3)$ of the dihedral group $D_3$. This $R$-matrix does not have the crossing unitarity property. In this manner we derive integrable boundary conditions for an open chain model of interacting non-abelian anyons.
Long ago, Arad and Herzog (AH) conjectured that, in finite simple groups, the product of two conjugacy classes of length greater than one is never a single conjugacy class. We discuss implications of this conjecture for non-abelian anyons in 2+1-dimensional discrete gauge theories. Thinking in this way also suggests closely related statements about finite simple groups and their associated discrete gauge theories. We prove these statements and provide some physical intuition for their validity. Finally, we explain that the lack of certain dualities in theories with non-abelian finite simple ga…
We propose a many-body index that extends Fredholm index theory to many-body systems. The index is defined for any charge-conserving system with a topologically ordered $p$-dimensional ground state sector. The index is fractional with the denominator given by $p$. In particular, this yields a new short proof of the quantization of the Hall conductance and of Lieb-Schulz-Mattis theorem. In the case that the index is non-integer, the argument provides an explicit construction of Wilson loop operators exhibiting a non-trivial braiding and that can be used to create fractionally charged Abelian an…
