In this work, we calculate the next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD corrections to the process $p+p \to J/ψ+ γ$ via the color-singlet mechanism at the LHC. The results show that the partial cross section ($p_t^{J/ψ}>$3GeV and $|y^{J/ψ,γ}|<$3) is enhanced by a factor of about 2.0, and the differential cross section can be enhanced by two orders of magnitude in the large transverse momentum region of $J/ψ$. Furthermore, the polarization of $J/ψ$ changes from transverse polarization at leading-order to longitudinal polarization at NLO. For the inclusive $J/ψ$ hadroproduction, it is known that the color-octet contributions are one order of magnitude larger than the color-singlet contribution, and the polarization distribution is dominated by the color-octet behavior at NLO. In contrast, for $J/ψ+γ$ production the color-singlet contribution is of the same order as the color-octet contribution, and the polarization distribution arises from both the color-singlet and color-octet. Therefore, measurements of $J/ψ$ production associated with a direct photon at the hadron collider could be an important supplement to testify the theoretical framework treating with the heavy quarkonium. In addition, an NLO QCD correction to $Υ+γ$ production at the LHC is also presented in this paper.
Hadronic final states at the LHC will be an interesting testing ground for QCD. A good understanding of QCD radiation will also be important for the discovery of new physics at the LHC. I discuss some aspects of this subject and give a few examples.
As an introduction to QCD at the LHC I give an overview of QCD at the Tevatron, emphasizing the high Q^2 frontier which will be taken over by the LHC. After describing briefly the LHC detectors I discuss high mass diffraction, in particular central exclusive production of Higgs and vector boson pairs. I introduce the FP420 project to measure the scattered protons 420m downstream of ATLAS and CMS.
The study of QCD processes at the LHC will serve two main goals. First the predictions of QCD will be tested and precision measurements will be performed. Second QCD processes represent a major part of the background to other Standard Model processes and signals of new physics at the LHC and thus need to be understood precisely in the new kinematic region available here. Furthermore, the production cross-sections for almost all processes are controlled by QCD.
We present the theory of QED x QCD resummation and its interplay with shower/matrix element matching in precision LHC physics scenarios. We illustrate the theory using single heavy gauge boson production at hadron colliders.
We present some physics topics that can be studied at the LHC using proton tagging. We distinguish the QCD (Pomeron structure, BFKL analysis...) from the exploratory physics topics (HIggs boson, anomalous couplings between photons and $W/Z$ bosons
We compute the mixed QCD$\otimes$QED corrections to the production of on-shell $Z$ bosons at the LHC at a fully-exclusive level. We also include the factorised NLO QCD correction to $Z$ boson production and NLO QED correction to $Z$ boson decay into two leptons. We make use of an abelianised version of the nested soft-collinear subtraction formalism to perform this computation. We study the phenomenological impact of the mixed QCD$\otimes$QED corrections for a number of observables relevant for LHC phenomenology.
I discuss a number of novel tests of QCD at the LHC, measurements which can illuminate fundamental features of hadron physics. I also review the "Principle of Maximum Conformality" (PMC) which systematically sets the renormalization scale order-by-order in pQCD, eliminating an unnecessary theoretical uncertainty. The PMC allows LHC experiments to test QCD much more precisely, and the sensitivity of LHC measurements to physics beyond the Standard Model is increased.
These proceedings discuss some of the highlights of recent research in perturbative QCD as it relates to the LHC. Topics covered include the new generation of Monte Carlo event generators, the revolution that is occurring in NLO calculations, progress towards NNLO predictions and developments in the definition and use of jets.
I review the status of the comparisons between a few measurements at hadronic colliders and perturbative QCD predictions, which emphasize the need for improving the current computations. Such improvements will be mandatory for a satisfactory understanding of high-energy collisions at the LHC
We discuss the elements of QED X QCD exponentiation and its interplay with shower/ME matching and IR-improved DGLAP theory in precision LHC physics scenarios. Applications to single heavy gauge boson production at hadron colliders are illustrated.
We discuss novel QCD phenomena in pA collisions at LHC energies such as the possibility to invesigate the behaviour of hard processes at $x $ as low as $10^{-7}$, signals for onset of the black body limit in the hard processes and in the nucleon fragmentation, multijet production.
We briefly review the status of high precision QCD predictions available for LHC processes, focusing on corrections beyond NLO and ways to make the latter available in a convenient format. As a phenomenological example we discuss the two-loop corrections to Higgs boson pair production in gluon fusion.
We investigate the inclusive and jet production rates of $b-$quarks and also the $J/ψ-$meson production at the LHC in the framework of $k_T$-factorization QCD approach. Our study is based on the off-shell partonic QCD subprocesses. The unintegrated gluon densities in a proton are determined using the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin (KMR) prescription as well as CCFM evolution equation. Our predictions are compared with the recent experimental data taken by the ATLAS, CMS and LHCb collaborations.
In this talk I review some challenges which await perturbative QCD at the Large Hadron Collider. In particular, I consider the underlying event, Monte Carlo methods and next-to-leading order (NLO) calculations.
We report on recently computed mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to on-shell $W$ and $Z$ boson production. We use these differential predictions to estimate their impact on the $W$ boson mass determination at the LHC.
I briefly review the progress in perturbative QCD calculations in LEP era and discuss the prospects for the extension of their accuracy to higher orders.
With an eye toward LHC processes in which theoretical precisions of 1 percent are desired, we introduce the theory of the simultaneous YFS resummation of QED and QCD to compute the size of the expected resummed soft radiative threshold effects in precision studies of heavy particle production at the LHC. Our results show that both QED and QCD soft threshold effects must be controlled to be on the conservative side to achieve such precision goals.
The $J/ψ+Z^0$ associated production at the LHC is an important process in investigating the color-octet mechanism of non-relativistic QCD in describing the processes involving heavy quarkonium. We calculate the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to the $J/ψ+Z^0$ associated production at the LHC within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic QCD, and provide the theoretical predictions for the distribution of the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum. Our results show that the differential cross section at the leading-order is significantly enhanced by the NLO QCD corrections. We conclude t…
We present next-to-leading order QCD corrections to production of two $W$ bosons at the LHC in the Randall-Sundrum model. Various kinematical distributions are obtained to order $α_s$ in QCD by taking into account all the parton level subprocesses. We estimate the impact of the QCD corrections on various observables and find that they are significant. We also show the reduction in factorization scale uncertainty when ${\cal O}(α_s)$ effects are included.
In this work, we investigate the one-loop QCD correction to top pair production in the littlest Higgs model with T-parity at the LHC. We calculate the relative correction of the top pair production cross section and top-antitop spin correlation at the LHC for $\sqrt{s}=8,14$ TeV. We find that the relative corrections of top pair production cross section can reach about $-0.35\%$, and the top-antitop spin correlation can reach $1.7\%$($2\%$) at the 8(14) TeV LHC in the favorable parameter space.
We present cross sections and differential distributions for QCD radiative corrections to the QCD processes pp -> W+2j and pp -> Z+2j at the CERN LHC. Calculations are performed with the Monte Carlo program MCFM. Cross section dependence on the renormalization and factorization scales is greatly reduced, except for the heavy-flavor case of Wbb~, which has new features at next-to-leading order at the LHC. We also present cross sections for Wbb~ and Z+2j in kinematic configurations relevant for Higgs boson searches.
We calculate the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to the $J/ψ+W$ production at the LHC, and provide the theoretical distribution of the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum. Our results show that the differential cross section $\frac{dσ}{dp_T^{J/ψ}}$ at the LO is significantly enhanced by the NLO QCD corrections. We believe that the comparison between the theoretical predictions for the $J/ψ+W$ production and the experimental data at the LHC can provide a verification for the colour-octet mechanism of non-relativistic QCD in the description of the processes involving heavy quarkonium.
Possible consequences of the production of small black holes at the LHC for different scenarios with large extra dimensions are investigated. The effects from black hole production on some standard jet observables are examined, concentrating on the reduction of the QCD cross section. It is found that black hole production of partons interacting on a short enough distance indeed seem to generate a drastic drop in the QCD cross section. However from an experimental point of view this will in most cases be camouflaged by energetic radiation from the black holes.
In this talk we discuss the implementation of the full next-to-leading order QCD corrections to electroweak Higgs boson plus three jet production at the LHC within the Matchbox framework of the Herwig++ event generator. We also present numerical results for integrated cross sections and kinematic distributions.
If Micro Black Holes (MBHs) can be produced at the LHC, they will decay very fast. We study hypothetical MBHs that do not decay; in particular, QCD effects on accretion by MBHs that are produced at rest. We explain why accretion of a nucleon by such MBHs is associated with pion emission. This pion emission results in a kick to the MBHs, such that their velocities are large enough to escape the Earth. Our study provides an extra assurance that MBHs which might be produced at the LHC are not dangerous.
We revisited excited leptons ($\bar{l^*}l$) production through gauge mediation only at LHC, followed by their two body decays into Standard Model (SM) particles. We include the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to these processes. We have shown that these corrections can be substantial and significant. We also show that the scale dependence of the NLO cross section is greatly reduced as compare to leading order (LO) cross section.
In some processes at the LHC, theoretical precisions of 1 percent are desired. With an eye toward such precisions, we introduce the theory of the simultaneous YFS resummation of QED and QCD to compute the size of the expected resummed soft radiative threshold effects in precision studies of heavy particle production at the LHC. Our results, that the soft QED threshold effects are at the level of 0.3 percent whereas the soft QCD threshold effects enter at the level of 20 percent, show that both must be controlled to be on the conservative side to achieve such precision goals.
We compute the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to the gluon-fusion subprocess of diphoton-plus-jet production at the LHC. We compute fully differential distributions by combining two-loop virtual corrections with one-loop real radiation using antenna subtraction to cancel infrared divergences. We observe significant corrections at NLO which demonstrate the importance of combining these corrections with the quark-induced diphoton-plus-jet channel at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO).
This contribution provides a pedagogical introduction to and review of the current status and ongoing progress in the development of Monte Carlo tools for the calculation and simulation of high-Q^2 processes in hadronic collisions.
We present theoretical predictions for mono-$Z$ production in the search for dark matter in Run-II at the LHC, including next-to-leading order QCD corrections and parton-shower effects. We consider generic simplified models with vector and scalar $s$-channel mediators. The calculation is performed by implementing the simplified models in the FeynRules/MadGraph5_aMC@NLO framework, which allows us to include higher-order QCD corrections and parton-shower effects in an automated way. We find that these corrections are sizeable and help to reduce the theoretical uncertainties. We also investigate …
We present the full NLO QCD corrections to the production of a W^+W^- pair in association with two jets in hadronic collisions, which is an important background to New Physics and Higgs boson searches. We include leptonic decays of the W-bosons with full spin correlations. We find NLO corrections of the order of 10% for standard cuts at the LHC. The scale dependence is considerably reduced by the NLO corrections.
We present the current status of the comparisons with the respective data of the predictions of our approach of exact amplitude-based resummation in quantum field theory as applied to precision QCD calculations as needed for LHC physics, using the MC Herwiri1.031. The agreement between the theoretical predictions and the data exhibited continues to be encouraging.
The implementation of the full next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to electroweak Higgs boson plus three jet production at hadron colliders such as the LHC within the Matchbox NLO framework of the Herwig++ event generator is discussed. We present numerical results for integrated cross sections and kinematic distributions.
This contribution presents a selection of the topics (parton densities, fixed-order calculations, parton showers, soft-gluon resummation) discussed in my introductory lectures at the Workshop and includes a pedagogical overview of the corresponding theoretical tools.
We compute the total cross section and the transverse momentum distribution for single charged slepton and sneutrino production at hadronic colliders including NLO supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric QCD corrections. The supersymmetric QCD corrections can be substantial. We also resum the gluon transverse momentum distribution and compare our results with two Monte Carlo generators. We compute branching ratios of the supersymmetric decays of the slepton and determine event rates for the like-sign dimuon final state at the Tevatron and at the LHC.
We consider Higgs boson production through gluon--gluon fusion in hadron collisions, when a veto is applied on the transverse momenta of the accompanying hard jets. We compute the QCD radiative corrections to this process at NLO and NNLO. The NLO calculation is complete. The NNLO calculation uses the recently evaluated NNLO soft and virtual QCD contributions to the inclusive cross section. We find that the jet veto reduces the impact of the NLO and NNLO contributions, the reduction being more sizeable at the LHC than at the Tevatron.
We present a fully-differential calculation of the NNLO QCD corrections to the t-channel mechanism for producing single top quarks at the LHC. We work in the structure function approximation, computing QCD corrections to the light- and heavy-quark lines separately and neglecting the dynamical cross-talk between the two. The neglected contribution, which appears at NNLO for the first time, is color-suppressed and is expected to be sub-dominant. Within this approximation, we find that, for the total cross section, NNLO QCD corrections are in the few percent range and, therefore, are comparable t…
Charm production in pp collisions is considered in the framework of perturbative QCD. The values of two parameters, the charm quark mass $m_c$ and the QCD scale mu^2, are determined from the comparison of the theoretical calculations with experimental data. The RHIC data on charm and beauty production are compared with the k_T-factorization approach predictions and with standard NLO QCD. The calculated results underestimate the STAR Collaboration data. The role of possible nuclear effects is discussed. The predictions for LHC energies are also given.
The detailed study of the Higgs boson is one of the main tasks of contemporary particle physics. Gluon fusion, the main production channel of Higgs bosons at the LHC, has been successfully modelled in QCD up to $\text{N}^3\text{LO}$. To fully exploit this unprecedented theoretical effort, sub-leading contributions, such as electroweak corrections, must be investigated. I will present the analytic calculations of the gluon- and quark-induced Higgs plus jet amplitudes in mixed QCD-electroweak corrections mediated by light quarks up to order $v α^2 α_S^{3/2}$.
The process $pp \to W^+W^+jj$ gives rise to an exotic Standard Model signature at the LHC, involving high-$p_{\perp}$ like-sign leptons, missing energy and jets. In this brief article the motivation for study, along with selected results from the computation of NLO QCD corrections to the QCD-mediated part of this process\cite{us} are presented. It is shown that the corrections reduce the dependence of the cross-section on renormalisation and factorisation scales, and produce a relatively hard third jet in a significant fraction of events.
We present next-to-leading order QCD corrections to production of two $W$ bosons in hadronic collisions in the extra dimension ADD model.
The high luminosity that will be accumulated at the LHC will enable precise differential measurements of the hadronic production of a top--antitop-quark pair in association with a $\text{W}$ boson. Therefore, an accurate description of this process is needed for realistic final states. In this work we combine for the first time the NLO QCD and electroweak corrections to the full off-shell $\text{t}\overline{\text{t}}{\text{W}}^+$ production at the LHC in the three-charged-lepton channel, including all spin correlations, non-resonant effects, and interferences. To this end, we have computed the…
Inspired by the recent LHC Higgs data and null search results of supersymmetry (SUSY), we scan the parameter space of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with relatively heavy sparticles (1-3 TeV). Then in the parameter space allowed by current collider experiments and dark matter detections, we calculate the complete one-loop SUSY QCD corrections to $pp\to b\bar{b}h$ at the LHC with $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV and obtain the following observations: (i) For the large values of $\tanβ$ and low values of $m_{A}$, the SUSY QCD effects can be quite large, which, however, have been excluded by t…
The dominant production process for heavy charged Higgs bosons at the LHC is the associated production with heavy quarks. We have calculated the next-to-leading-order supersymmetric QCD corrections to charged-Higgs production through the parton processes $q\bar{q},gg \to tbH^{\pm}$ and present results for total cross sections and differential distributions. The QCD corrections reduce the renormalization and factorization scale dependence and thus stabilize the theoretical predictions. We present a comparison of the next-to-leading-order results for the inclusive cross section with a calculatio…
We present a study of effects of QCD radiation in the production of heavy colored states, employing inclusive multi-jet samples obtained by matching matrix elements and parton showers. We discuss several examples showing that matched samples are in general not only more accurate than a parton shower alone, but also often indispensable to make reliable predictions of beyond the Standard Model signals.
We present the elements of three applications of resummation methods in non-Abelian gauge theories: (1), QED X QCD exponentiation and shower/ME matching for LHC physics; (2), IR improvement of DGLAP theory; (3), resummed quantum gravity and the final state of Hawking radiation. In all cases, the extension of the YFS approach, originally introduced for Abelian gauge theory, to non-Abelian gauge theories, QCD and quantum general relativity, leads to new results and solutions which we briefly summarize.
In this paper we study the Single Top and W boson associated photoproduction via the main reaction $\rm pp\rightarrow pγp\rightarrow pW^{\pm}t+Y$ at the 14 TeV Large Hadron Collider (LHC) up to next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD level assuming a typical LHC multipurpose forward detector. We use the Five-Flavor-Number Schemes (5FNS) with massless bottom quark assumption in the whole calculation. Our results show that the QCD NLO corrections can reduce the scale uncertainty. The typical K-factors are in the range of 1.15 to 1.2 which lead to the QCD NLO corrections of 15$%$ to 20$%$ correspond to t…
We examine a model of hadronic diffractive scattering which interpolates between perturbative QCD and non-perturbative fits. We restrict the perturbative QCD resummation to the large transverse momentum region, and use a simple Regge-pole parametrization in the infrared region. This picture allows us to account for existing data, and to estimate the size of the perturbative contribution to future diffractive measurements. At LHC and SSC energies, we find that a cut-off BFKL equation can lead to a measurable perturbative component in traditionally soft processes. In particular, we show that the…
Extra dimension is one of the most attractive candidates beyond the Standard Model. In warped extra dimensional space-time, not only gauge hierarchy problem but also quark-lepton mass hierarchy can be naturally explained. In this setup, a sizable parity violation through Kaluza-Klein gluon exchange appears in QCD process such as helicity dependent top pair production. We investigate this QCD parity violating process by use of $SO(5) \times U(1)$ gauge-Higgs unification model. We evaluate LHC observable quantities, i.e., a charge asymmetry and a forward-backward asymmetry of the top pair produc…
We present the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the associated production of the vector gauge boson ($Z/W^\pm$) and the graviton in the large extra dimension model at the LHC. We estimate the impact of the QCD corrections on the total cross sections as well as the differential distributions of the gauge bosons and find that they are significant. We also study the dependence of the cross sections on the arbitrary factorization scale and show the reduction in the scale uncertainties at NLO level. Further, we discuss the ultraviolet sensitivity of the theoretical predictions.
We summarize the recent progress in a new approach to precision LHC physics based on the IR-improved DGLAP-CS theory as it relates to a new MC friendly exponentiated scheme for precision calculation of higher order corrections to LHC physics in which IR singularities from both QED and QCD are canceled to all orders in αand in α_s simultaneously in the presence of rigorous shower/ME matching. We present the first MC data comparing the implied new showers themselves with the standard ones using the HERWIG6.5 MC event generator as a test case at LHC energies.
Theoretical predictions used in experimental analysis of LHC data have an inherent theoretical uncertainty associated to the relevant order in the perturbative expansion that the observable is computed. In this talk we briefly introduce and motivate the topic of QCD radiative corrections stressing the impact of including higher-order QCD effects in the theory predictions and in particular we consider two-loop QCD corrections. We present numerical results at NNLO for gluonic jet production where jets are reconstructed using the anti-$k_T$ jet algorithm from gluon-gluon and quark-antiquark scatt…
Precision computations of QCD and QCD+electroweak emission scattering processes will play an important role in understanding experimental data from the LHC, and thereby in uncovering new physics beyond the Standard Model. Recent years have seen substantial progress in expanding our ability to perform and implement such calculations. I discuss several different topics: the resolution of seeming discrepancies between heavy-quark predictions and measurements; the ongoing program of next-to-next-to-leading order calculations; and also progress in merging the parton-shower and matrix-element calcul…
The calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of a neutral Higgs-boson pair is briefly summarized. The dominant production mechanism is gluon fusion via top-quark loops, so that the QCD corrections can be considered, to good approximation, in the limit of a heavy top-quark mass.
We study the dijet production in Randall-Sundrum model at the LHC with QCD next-to-leading(NLO) order accuracy. Our results show that the QCD NLO corrections can increase the total cross sections by more than $80\%$ and reduce the scale dependence. We also explore in detail several important kinematic distributions at the NLO level. Moreover, we discuss the upper limits of the KK graviton excluded mass range and the allowed parameter space for the coupling constant and KK graviton mass, using the experiment data.
We present a complete next to next to leading order QCD corrections to the resonant production of sneutrino and charged slepton at the Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider within the context of R-parity violating supersymmetric model. We have demonstrated the role of NNLO QCD corrections in reducing uncertainties resulting from renormalisation and factorisation scales and thereby making our predictions reliable.
The Standard Model of particle physics predicts the existence of quantum tunnelling processes across topological inequivalent vacua, known as Instantons. In the electroweak sector, instantons provide a source of baryon asymmetry within the Standard Model. In Quantum Chromodynamics they are linked to chiral symmetry breaking and confinement. The direct experimental observation of Instanton-induced processes would therefore be a breakthrough in modern particle physics. Recently, new calculations for QCD Instanton processes in proton-proton collisions became public, suggesting sizable cross secti…
The Higgs boson production in association with a pair of W-bosons at the Large Hadron Collider(LHC) can be used to probe the coupling between Higgs boson and vector gauge bosons and discover the signature of new physics. We describe the impact of the complete QCD NLO radiative corrections and the gluon-gluon fusion subprocesss to the cross section of this process at the LHC, and investigate the dependence of the leading order(LO) and the QCD corrected cross sections on the fctorization/renormalization energy scale and Higgs boson mass. We present the LO and QCD corrected distributions of the i…
We discuss recent theoretical results for the complete mixed QCD-EW corrections to lepton-pair production via the Drell-Yan mechanism, a cornerstone process for the precision physics programme at the LHC. We present results for fiducial cross sections and differential distributions to both the neutral current- and charged current- process. We show that the mixed corrections are relatively large and of similar size to the NNLO QCD ones at central scales. In particular, for the neutral current case, we report the first result at this order that is valid in the entire range of dilepton invariant …
