We present a study of effects of QCD radiation in the production of heavy colored states, employing inclusive multi-jet samples obtained by matching matrix elements and parton showers. We discuss several examples showing that matched samples are in general not only more accurate than a parton shower alone, but also often indispensable to make reliable predictions of beyond the Standard Model signals.
Cross sections of the colored scalar particle production in $pp$-collisions are calculated and differential and total cross sections of the corresponding parton subprocesses are obtained. The total cross section of scalar gluon production in $pp$-collisions at the LHC is estimated and the dominant decays of scalar gluons are discussed. The production cross section of scalar gluons $F$ with masses $m_F\lesssim 1300$ GeV is shown to be sufficient for the effective production of these particles at the LHC.
In some new physics models, there exists a long-lived colored particle. Although such a particle is expected be discovered by studying the muon-like tracks, it is not easy to discriminate hadronic events from leptonic ones at the Large Hadron Collider. We focus on the charged track events associated with a single hard gluon jet. They are sensitive to the colored long-lived particle and found to be almost free from the background after applying the velocity cut. We also study the the process to probe properties of the particle.
In this talk, I show the automated Monte Carlo simulations at next-to-leading order in QCD as well as its matching to parton showers are already feasible within the framework of \MG5aMC. I briefly overview the recent activities and take the colored particle production at the LHC as examples. The tools and the models are ready for using by both phenomenologists and experimentalists.
We study the collider signatures of a long-lived massive colored scalar transforming trivially under the weak interaction and decaying within the inner sections of a detector such as ATLAS or CMS. In our study, we assume that the colored scalar couples at tree-level to a top quark and a stable fermion, possibly arising from a dark sector or from supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model. After implementing the latest experimental searches for long-lived colored scalars, we observe a region of parameter space consistent with a colored electroweak-singlet scalar with mass between $\sim200-…
The high energy limit of QCD is controlled by the small-$x$ part of a hadron wavefunction. I argue that this part is universal to all hadrons and is composed of a new form of matter: a Colored Glass Condensate. This matter is weakly interacting at very small $x$, but is non-perturbative because of the highly occupied boson states which compose the condensate. Such a matter might be studied in high energy lepton-hadron or hadron-hadron interactions.
The LHC is the perfect environment for the study of new physics in the top quark sector. We study the possibility of detecting signals of heavy color-octet vector resonances, through the charge asymmetry, in top-antitop+jet events. Besides contributions with the top-antitop pair in a color-singlet state, the asymmetry gets also contributions which are proportional to the color factor f_{abc}^2. This process is particularly interesting for extra-dimensional models, where the inclusive charge asymmetry generated by Kaluza-Klein excitations of the gluon vanishes at the tree level. We find that th…
We perform a study of the LHC discovery reach on a heavy gluon (G*) and heavy fermions (top and bottom excitations), coming from a new composite sector. We find that heavy fermion resonances have a great impact on the composite gluon phenomenology. If the composite gluon is heavier than composite fermions, as flavor observables seem to suggest, the search in the channel where G* decays into a heavy fermion plus its Standard Model partner is very promising, with the possibility for both the G* and heavy fermions to be discovered at the early stage of the LHC. The channel offers also the possibi…
We study the colored resonance production at the LHC in a most general approach. We classify the possible colored resonances based on group theory decomposition, and construct their effective interactions with light partons. The production cross section from annihilation of valence quarks or gluons may be on the order of 400 - 1000 pb at LHC energies for a mass of 1 TeV with nominal couplings, leading to the largest production rates for new physics at the TeV scale, and simplest event topology with dijet final states. We apply the new dijet data from the LHC experiments to put bounds on variou…
We analyze the compatibility of the recent LHC signals and the TeV-scale left-right model(s) in the minimal nonsupersymmetric $SO(10)$ framework. We show that the models in which the Higgs content is selected based on the extended survival hypothesis do not allow the $W_R$ boson to be at the TeV-scale. By relaxing this conjecture, we investigate various scenarios where a number of colored-scalars, originated from various Pati-Salam multiplets, are light and whence they survive down to the low energies. Performing a detailed renormalization group analysis with various low-energy Higgs configura…
Condensates of colored fermions driving electroweak symmetry breaking could give rise to a light pseudoscalar that would show up in the Higgs search at the LHC. The branching ratios of its decay will distinguish it from the Higgs and illuminate its origin. In particular the colored fermions may be the techniquarks of a one family technicolor theory or the quarks of a strongly interacting fourth family. The former has more difficulties in this context.
R-hadrons are only one of many possible stable colored states that the LHC might produce. All such particles would provide a spectacular, if somewhat unusual, signal at ATLAS and CMS. Produced in large numbers and leaving a characteristic signature throughout all layers of the detector, including the muon chamber, they could be straightforward to discover even with low luminosity. Though such long lived colored particles (LLCPs) can be realized in many extensions of the Standard Model, most analyses of their phenomenology have focused only on R-hadrons. In order to distinguish among the possib…
The possibility to search for lepton number violating signals at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the colored seesaw scenario is investigated. In this context the fields that generate neutrino masses at the one-loop level are scalar and Majorana fermionic color-octets of SU(3). Due to the QCD strong interaction these states may be produced at the LHC with a favorable rate. We study the production mechanisms and decays relevant to search for lepton number violation signals in the channels with same-sign dileptons. In the simplest case when the two fermionic color-octets are degenerate in mass…
A color octet isodoublet can have esoteric origins and it complies with minimal flavour violation. In this study, we take a scenario where the well known Type-X Two-Higgs doublet model is augmented with a color octet isodoublet. We shed light on how such a setup can predict the recently observed value for the $W$-boson mass. We also evaluate the two-loop Barr-Zee contributions to muon $g-2$ stemming from the colored scalars. The parameter space compatible with the observed muon $g-2$ gets relaxed w.r.t. what it is in the pure Type-X 2HDM by virtue of the contribution from the colored scalars. …
We present for the first time the full automation of collider predictions matched with parton showers at the next-to-leading accuracy in QCD within non-trivial extensions of the Standard Model. The sole inputs required from the user are the model Lagrangian and the process of interest. As an application of the above, we explore scenarios beyond the Standard Model where new colored scalar particles can be pair produced in hadron collisions. Using simplified models to describe the new field interactions with the Standard Model, we present precision predictions for the LHC within the MadGraph5 aM…
In color SU(2) lattice QCD, we investigate colored-diquark distributions in two-hadron scatterings by means of Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes on the lattice. With colored-diquark operators in the Coulomb gauge, we measure components of two colored diquarks realized as intermediate states via one gluon exchange (OGE) processes in hadron scattering. From the colored-diquark distributions, we estimate the dominant range of gluon (color) exchanges between closely located two hadrons. We find that the colored-diquark components are enhanced at the short range ($\leq$0.2 fm) and their tails show the sing…
An extremely precise global symmetry is necessary in the Peccei--Quinn solution to the strong CP problem. Such symmetry arises when colored chiral fermions are localized in an internal space. We present a supersymmetric model that incorporates the above mechanism. Extra colored chiral multiplets around the supersymmetry-breaking scale are a generic prediction of the supersymetric model.
We study a class of models in which the Higgs pair production is enhanced at hadron colliders by an extra neutral scalar. The scalar particle is produced by the gluon fusion via a loop of new colored particles, and decays into di-Higgs through its mixing with the Standard Model Higgs. Such a colored particle can be the top/bottom partner, such as in the dilaton model, or a colored scalar which can be triplet, sextet, octet, etc., called leptoquark, diquark, coloron, etc., respectively. We examine the experimental constraints from the latest Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data, and discuss the fut…
Current LHC searches for new colored particles generally focus on their pair production channels and assume any single production to be negligible. We argue that such an assumption may be unnecessary in some cases. Inclusion of model dependent single productions in pair production searches (or vice versa) can give us new information about model parameters or better exclusion limits. Considering the example of the recent CMS search for first generation scalar leptoquarks in the pair production channel, we illustrate how single productions can be systematically included in the signal estimations…
We study the phenomenology of exotic color-triplet scalar particles $X$ with charge $|Q|=2/3, 4/3,5/3,7/3,8/3$ and $10/3$. If $X$ is a non-singlet of $SU(2)_W$ representation, mass splitting within the multiplet allows for cascade decays of the members into the lightest state. We study examples where the lightest state, in turn, decays into a three-body $W^\pm jj$ final state, and show that in such case the entire multiplet is compatible with existing direct collider searches and indirect precision tests down to $m_X\sim250$~GeV. However, bound states $S$, made of $XX^†$ pairs at $m_S\approx2m…
We construct a simple and natural supersymmetric model where the dominant Higgs decay is h -> aa followed by a -> gg. In this case m_h < m_Z is compatible with all experimental searches, completely eliminating the fine tuning otherwise required to satisfy Higgs search limits. The model extends the MSSM with singlet Higgs fields as well as vector-like colored particles that mediate the decay a -> gg. The a is a pseudo-Nambu Goldstone boson of a new global U(1) symmetry, and can naturally have any mass from a few GeV to m_h/2. All interactions can be perturbative up to the GUT scale, and gauge c…
I briefly review the effective Lagrangians for three and two flavors QCD describing the relevant color superconductive light degrees of freedom and their electroweak interactions.
We analyze the behavior of Higgs to diphoton rate and Higgs gluon-gluon production cross section in minimal extensions of the Standard Model comprising new colored vector-like fermions that do not mix with the ordinary ones. We compare these information with constraints coming from electroweak precision measurements. We compute pair production cross sections for the lightest fermion and discuss the LHC bounds. Finally, we study the phenomenology of possible quarkonium states composed by these new colored fermions.
We study the possibility that the current accelerated expansion of the universe is driven by the vacuum energy density of a colored scalar field which is responsible for a phase transition in which the gauge SU(3)_c symmetry breaks. We show that if we are stuck in a SU(3)_c - preserving false vacuum, then SU(3)_c symmetry breaking can be accommodated without violating any experimental QCD bounds or bounds from cosmological observations. Moreover, unless there is an unnatural fine-tuning beyond the usual cosmological constant fine-tuning, the true vacuum state of the universe is anti-de Sitter.…
The vNRQCD Lagrangian for colored heavy scalar fields in the fundamental representation of QCD and the renormalization group analysis of the corresponding operators are presented. The results are an important ingredient for renormalization group improved computations of scalar-antiscalar bound state energies and production rates at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNLL) order.
We investigate the prospects for the discovery of massive hyper-gluons using data from the early runs of the CERN Large Hadron Collider with $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV and assuming an integrated luminosity of 1 fb$^{-1}$. A phenomenological Lagrangian is adopted to evaluate the cross section of a pair of colored vector bosons (coloron, $\tildeρ$) decaying into four colored scalar resonances (hyper-pion, $\tildeπ$), which then decay into eight gluons. We include the dominant physics background from the production of $8g$, $7g1q$, $6g2q$, and $5g3q$. We find an abundance of signal events and that realis…
Hadronic final states at the LHC will be an interesting testing ground for QCD. A good understanding of QCD radiation will also be important for the discovery of new physics at the LHC. I discuss some aspects of this subject and give a few examples.
We calculate the wake induced in a hot, dense QCD medium by a fast parton in the framework of linear response theory. We discuss two different scenarios: a weakly coupled quark gluon plasma (pQGP) described by hard-thermal loop (HTL) perturbation theory and a strongly coupled QGP (sQGP), which had the properties of a quantum liquid.
The relic cosmological abundance of stable or long-lived neutral colored particles gets reduced by about a few orders of magnitude by annihilations that occur after QCD confinement. We compute the abundance and the cosmological bounds on relic gluinos. The same post-confinement effect strongly enhances co-annihilations with a lighter Dark Matter particle, provided that their mass difference is below a few GeV. Charged colored particles (such as stops) can instead form baryons, which can be (quasi)stable in some models.
We consider a charged scalar particle $χ$ of mass around 375 GeV charged under both $SU(3)_c$ and a new confining non-abelian gauge interaction. After pair production, these interactions confine the exotic scalar into non-relativistic bound states whose decays into photons can explain the 750 GeV diphoton excess observed at the LHC. Taking the new confining group to be $\mathrm{SU}(2)$, we find $χ$ must carry an electric charge of $Q \sim [\frac{1}{2}, 1]$ to fit the data. Interestingly, we find that pair production of the scalars and the subsequent formation of the bound state dominates over …
Colored dark sectors where the dark matter particle is accompanied by colored partners have recently attracted theoretical and phenomenological interest. We explore the possibility that the dark sector consists of the dark matter particle and a color-octet partner, where the interaction with the Standard Model is governed by an effective operator involving gluons. The resulting interactions resemble the color analogues of electric and magnetic dipole moments. Although many phenomenological features of this kind of model only depend on the group representation of the partner under SU(3)$_c$, we…
We show that production of the Higgs boson through gluon-fusion may be suppressed in the presence of colored scalars. Substantial destructive interference between the top quark diagrams and colored scalar diagrams is possible due to cancellations between the real (and also imaginary) parts of the amplitudes. As an example, we consider a color-octet scalar that has a negative, order one coupling to the Higgs doublet. We find that gluon fusion can be suppressed by more than an order of magnitude when the scalar mass is below a few hundred GeV, while milder suppressions occur for larger scalar ma…
We study QCD correction to the pair production of colored scalar particles in electron-positron annihilation with an emphasis on gluon emission in the final state. We discuss the usefulness of working in a ``quasi-two-body'' frame and present the helicity amplitudes for the process. We compare the final state configuration with fermion pair production and find that the three-jet fraction for the scalars shows quantitative difference from that for fermions.
As an introduction to QCD at the LHC I give an overview of QCD at the Tevatron, emphasizing the high Q^2 frontier which will be taken over by the LHC. After describing briefly the LHC detectors I discuss high mass diffraction, in particular central exclusive production of Higgs and vector boson pairs. I introduce the FP420 project to measure the scattered protons 420m downstream of ATLAS and CMS.
The thermal relic abundance of Dark Matter motivates the existence of new electroweak scale particles, independent of naturalness considerations. However, most unnatural Dark Matter models do not ensure the presence of new particles charged under SU(3)_C, resulting in challenging LHC phenomenology. Here, we present a class of models with scalar electroweak doublet Dark Matter that require a host of colored particles at the TeV scale. In these models, the Higgs boson is apparently fine-tuned, but the Dark Matter doublet is kept light without any additional fine-tuning.
The study of QCD processes at the LHC will serve two main goals. First the predictions of QCD will be tested and precision measurements will be performed. Second QCD processes represent a major part of the background to other Standard Model processes and signals of new physics at the LHC and thus need to be understood precisely in the new kinematic region available here. Furthermore, the production cross-sections for almost all processes are controlled by QCD.
We present the theory of QED x QCD resummation and its interplay with shower/matrix element matching in precision LHC physics scenarios. We illustrate the theory using single heavy gauge boson production at hadron colliders.
We present some physics topics that can be studied at the LHC using proton tagging. We distinguish the QCD (Pomeron structure, BFKL analysis...) from the exploratory physics topics (HIggs boson, anomalous couplings between photons and $W/Z$ bosons
We consider the impact of new exotic colored and/or charged matter interacting through the Higgs portal on Standard Model Higgs boson searches at the LHC. Such Higgs portal couplings can induce shifts in the effective Higgs-gluon-gluon and Higgs-photon-photon couplings, thus modifying the Higgs production and decay patterns. We consider two possible interpretations of the current LHC Higgs searches based on ~ 5/fb of data at each detector: 1) a Higgs boson in the mass range (124-126) GeV and 2) a `hidden' heavy Higgs boson which is underproduced due to the suppression of its gluon fusion produ…
We compute the mixed QCD$\otimes$QED corrections to the production of on-shell $Z$ bosons at the LHC at a fully-exclusive level. We also include the factorised NLO QCD correction to $Z$ boson production and NLO QED correction to $Z$ boson decay into two leptons. We make use of an abelianised version of the nested soft-collinear subtraction formalism to perform this computation. We study the phenomenological impact of the mixed QCD$\otimes$QED corrections for a number of observables relevant for LHC phenomenology.
We examine a scenario where the new physics at the LHC includes an approximate conformal field theory, where some of the degrees of freedom (aka "unparticles") carry a color charge. We present a simple argument showing that the production cross section for scalar unparticles mediated by a gauge interaction is given by (2-d) times the standard particle expression, where d is the scaling dimension of the unparticle field. We explicitly check that this is indeed the case, which involves non trivial cancellations between different Feynman diagrams, for the process q qbar to scalar unparticles.
We demonstrate enhanced di-Higgs production at the LHC in the presence of modifications of the effective couplings of Higgs to gluons from new, light, colored scalars. While our results apply to an arbitrary set of colored scalars, we illustrate the effects with a real color octet scalar -- a simple, experimentally viable model involving a light (~125-300 GeV) colored scalar. Given the recent LHC results, we consider two distinct scenarios: First, if the Higgs is indeed near 125 GeV, we show that the di-Higgs cross section could be up to nearly one thousand times the Standard Model rate for pa…
I discuss a number of novel tests of QCD at the LHC, measurements which can illuminate fundamental features of hadron physics. I also review the "Principle of Maximum Conformality" (PMC) which systematically sets the renormalization scale order-by-order in pQCD, eliminating an unnecessary theoretical uncertainty. The PMC allows LHC experiments to test QCD much more precisely, and the sensitivity of LHC measurements to physics beyond the Standard Model is increased.
These proceedings discuss some of the highlights of recent research in perturbative QCD as it relates to the LHC. Topics covered include the new generation of Monte Carlo event generators, the revolution that is occurring in NLO calculations, progress towards NNLO predictions and developments in the definition and use of jets.
I review the status of the comparisons between a few measurements at hadronic colliders and perturbative QCD predictions, which emphasize the need for improving the current computations. Such improvements will be mandatory for a satisfactory understanding of high-energy collisions at the LHC
We discuss the elements of QED X QCD exponentiation and its interplay with shower/ME matching and IR-improved DGLAP theory in precision LHC physics scenarios. Applications to single heavy gauge boson production at hadron colliders are illustrated.
We discuss novel QCD phenomena in pA collisions at LHC energies such as the possibility to invesigate the behaviour of hard processes at $x $ as low as $10^{-7}$, signals for onset of the black body limit in the hard processes and in the nucleon fragmentation, multijet production.
We briefly review the status of high precision QCD predictions available for LHC processes, focusing on corrections beyond NLO and ways to make the latter available in a convenient format. As a phenomenological example we discuss the two-loop corrections to Higgs boson pair production in gluon fusion.
We investigate the inclusive and jet production rates of $b-$quarks and also the $J/ψ-$meson production at the LHC in the framework of $k_T$-factorization QCD approach. Our study is based on the off-shell partonic QCD subprocesses. The unintegrated gluon densities in a proton are determined using the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin (KMR) prescription as well as CCFM evolution equation. Our predictions are compared with the recent experimental data taken by the ATLAS, CMS and LHCb collaborations.
The $N$-jettiness subtraction has proven to be an efficient method to perform differential QCD next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculations in the last few years. One important ingredient of this method is the NNLO soft function. We calculate this soft function for one massive colored particle production at hadron colliders. We select the color octet and color triplet cases to present the final results. We also discuss its application in NLO and NNLO differential calculations.
We consider the production of squarks and gluinos at hadronic colliders. An overview over the class of processes is given. We investigate in detail the tree-level and higher order EW contributions to the cross sections. Special care has to be taken to obtain infrared finite observables. We study numerically stop--anti-stop and squark--gluino production at the LHC.
We perform a general study of the relic density and LHC constraints on simplified models where the dark matter coannihilates with a strongly interacting particle X. In these models, the dark matter depletion is driven by the self-annihilation of X to pairs of quarks and gluons through the strong interaction. The phenomenology of these scenarios therefore only depends on the dark matter mass and the mass splitting between dark matter and X as well as the quantum numbers of X. In this paper, we consider simplified models where X can be either a scalar, a fermion or a vector, as well as a color t…
The Abelian decomposition of QCD which decomposes the gluons to the color neutral binding gluons and the colored valence gluons shows that QCD can be viewed as the restricted QCD (RCD) made of the binding gluons which has the valence gluons as colored source, and simplifies the QCD dynamics greatly. In particular, it tells that the gauge covariant valence gluons can be treated as the constituents of hadrons, and generalizes the quark model to the quark and valence gluon model. So it provides a comprehensive picture of glueballs and their mixing with quarkoniums, and predicts new hybrid hadrons…
In this talk I review some challenges which await perturbative QCD at the Large Hadron Collider. In particular, I consider the underlying event, Monte Carlo methods and next-to-leading order (NLO) calculations.
We report on recently computed mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to on-shell $W$ and $Z$ boson production. We use these differential predictions to estimate their impact on the $W$ boson mass determination at the LHC.
In this paper we review the hadroproduction mechanisms of double-charm baryons for the different experimental environments and reinterpret the SELEX and LHCb results.
I briefly review the progress in perturbative QCD calculations in LEP era and discuss the prospects for the extension of their accuracy to higher orders.
The null search for the Higgs boson at the Tevatron implies strong constraints on heavy colored particles that increase the gluon-fusion induced production rate of the Higgs. We investigate the implications of the Tevatron exclusion limit on example extensions of the Standard Model that contain a new scalar state transforming as either an adjoint or a fundamental under the QCD gauge group. The bounds on the adjoint (fundamental) scalar mass exceed 200 GeV (100 GeV) for natural choices of scalar-sector parameters.
With an eye toward LHC processes in which theoretical precisions of 1 percent are desired, we introduce the theory of the simultaneous YFS resummation of QED and QCD to compute the size of the expected resummed soft radiative threshold effects in precision studies of heavy particle production at the LHC. Our results show that both QED and QCD soft threshold effects must be controlled to be on the conservative side to achieve such precision goals.
The $J/ψ+Z^0$ associated production at the LHC is an important process in investigating the color-octet mechanism of non-relativistic QCD in describing the processes involving heavy quarkonium. We calculate the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to the $J/ψ+Z^0$ associated production at the LHC within the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic QCD, and provide the theoretical predictions for the distribution of the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum. Our results show that the differential cross section at the leading-order is significantly enhanced by the NLO QCD corrections. We conclude t…
