We revisited excited leptons ($\bar{l^*}l$) production through gauge mediation only at LHC, followed by their two body decays into Standard Model (SM) particles. We include the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to these processes. We have shown that these corrections can be substantial and significant. We also show that the scale dependence of the NLO cross section is greatly reduced as compare to leading order (LO) cross section.
Using a subtraction method, we derive the formulae suitable for use in Monte-Carlo event generators to give the angular distribution for the gluon-quark induced NLO corrections in Drell-Yan lepton pair production. We also give the corresponding helicity density matrix for W and Z boson production.
We compute the differential and total rate of the semileptonic decay of polarized top-quarks $t\to \ell ν_\ell + b{\rm jet} + {\rm jet}$ at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the QCD coupling with an off-shell intermediate $W$ boson. We present several normalized distributions, in particular those that reflect the $t$-spin analyzing powers of the lepton, the b-jet and the $W^+$ boson at LO and NLO QCD.
We compute the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to WZ+jet production at the Tevatron and the LHC, including decays of the electroweak bosons to light leptons with all off-shell effects taken into account. The corrections are sizable and have significant impact on the differential distributions.
We present the complete next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD and NLO electroweak (EW) corrections to the $W$-boson pair production associated with a hard jet at the LHC including the spin correlated $W$-boson leptonic decays. The dependence of the leading order (LO) and NLO corrected cross sections on the jet transverse momentum cut is investigated. In dealing with the subsequent resonant $W$-boson decays, we adopt the {\sc MadSpin} method where the spin correlation effect is included. We also provide the LO and NLO corrected distributions of the transverse momenta and rapidities of final products.…
We propose a new A_5 model of leptons which corrects the LO predictions of Golden Ratio mixing via a minimal NLO Majorana mass correction which completely breaks the original Klein symmetry of the neutrino mass matrix. The minimal nature of the NLO correction leads to a restricted and correlated range of the mixing angles allowing agreement within the one sigma range of recent global fits following the reactor angle measurement by Daya Bay and RENO. The minimal NLO correction also preserves the LO inverse neutrino mass sum rule leading to a neutrino mass spectrum that extends into the quasi-de…
We use aMC@NLO to study the production of four charged leptons at the LHC, performing parton showers with both HERWIG and Pythia6. Our underlying matrix element calculation features the full next-to-leading order $O(α_S)$ result and the $O(α_S^2)$ contribution of the $gg$ channel, and it includes all off-shell, spin-correlation, virtual-photon-exchange, and interference effects. We present several key distributions together with the corresponding theoretical uncertainties. These are obtained through a process-independent technique that allows aMC@NLO to compute scale and PDF uncertainties in a…
The computation of the NLO QCD corrections to the cross sections for W+W- gamma and ZZgamma production in hadronic collisions is presented. We consider the case of a real photon in the final state, but include full leptonic decays of the W and Z bosons. Numerical results for the LHC and the Tevatron are obtained through a fully flexible parton level Monte Carlo based on the structure of the VBFNLO program, allowing an easy implementation of arbitrary cuts and distributions. We show the dependence on scale variations of the integrated cross sections and provide evidence that NLO QCD corrections…
In this paper we present the NLO QCD + NLO EW corrections to the $ZZZ$ production with subsequent $Z$-boson leptonic decays at the LHC by adopting the improved narrow width approximation, which takes into account off-shell contributions and spin correlations. Integrated cross sections at $13$, $14$, $33$ and $100~{\rm TeV}$ hadron colliders and various kinematic distributions are presented. Our numerical results show that the jet emission correction accounts for a large part of the total QCD correction, especially in the high energy region. By applying a proper cut to the jet transverse moment…
We consider lepton pair production at a hadron collider in a class of effective theories with the relevant operators being four-fermion contact interaction. Despite the nonrenormalizable nature of the interaction, we explicitly demonstrate that calculating QCD corrections is both possible and meaningful. Calculating the corrections for various differential distributions, we show that these can be substantial and significantly different from those within the SM. Furthermore, the corrections have a very distinctive flavour dependence. And finally, the scale dependence of the cross sections are g…
In this paper we present the full NLO QCD + NLO EW corrections to the $Z$-boson pair production in association with a hard jet at the LHC. The subsequent $Z$-boson leptonic decays are included by adopting both the naive NWA and MadSpin methods for comparison. Since the $ZZ+{\rm jet}$ production is an important background for single Higgs boson production and new physics search at hadron colliders, the theoretical predictions with high accuracy for the hadronic production of $ZZ+{\rm jet}$ are necessary. We present the numerical results of the integrated cross section and various kinematic dist…
We present a computation of the O(alpha_s) QCD corrections to W^\pm Z γproduction at the Large Hadron Collider. The photon is considered as real, and we include full leptonic decays for the W and Z bosons. Based on the structure of the VBFNLO program package, we obtain numerical results through a fully flexible Monte Carlo program, which allows to implement general cuts and distributions of the final-state particles. The NLO QCD corrections are sizable and strongly exceed the theory error obtained by a scale variation of the leading-order result. Also, the shapes of relevant observables are si…
The calculation of $t\bar{t}Z$ production including leptonic decays of both $Z$ boson and top quarks via a partially or fully off-shell calculation represents a definite step forward towards a more accurate description of events whose signatures originate from $t\bar{t}Z$ production. In this talk we review two studies that represent the state of the art of theoretical modeling of $t\bar{t}Z$ production by either performing the NLO QCD calculation of the fully decayed $pp\rightarrow e^+ν_eμ^-\barν_μb\bar{b}τ^+τ^-$ process (see Ref. [1]) or matching the NLO QCD calculation of $pp\rightarrow t\ba…
We present the NLO QCD corrections to the processes p p and p anti-p to W+ W- b anti-b including leptonic decays of the W bosons. Non-resonant contributions as well as diagrams with doubly resonant and singly resonant top quark propagators are fully taken into account. We employ the narrow width approximation to perform the decays of the W bosons; spin correlations are however preserved. We also calculate observables relevant for top quark mass measurements, and study the impact of kinematical requirements and different scale choices on t anti-t asymmetries.
In view of precision studies of the Higgs sector at the Run II of the LHC, the improvement of the accuracy of the theoretical prediction is becoming a pressing issue. In this framework, we detail a calculation of the full Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) electroweak corrections to Higgs boson decay into four charged leptons, by considering the gold-plated channel H -> Z(*) Z(*) -> 2l 2l', l,l' = e, mu. We match the NLO corrections with a QED Parton Shower (PS), in order to simulate exclusive multiple photon emission and provide novel results at NLOPS electroweak accuracy. We compare our NLO predict…
We present the QCD radiative corrections to the full off-shell $\rm t\bar{t}W^+$ production, considering a final state with three charged leptons, two b jets and missing energy. All interferences, off-shell effects and spin correlations are included in the calculation. Beyond presenting integrated and differential results for the full off-shell process, we compare them with those obtained applying a double-pole approximation to the virtual corrections.
MadGraph5_aMC@NLO is a software package that allows one to simulate processes of arbitrary complexity, at both the leading and the next-to-leading order perturbative accuracy, with or without matching and multi-jet merging to parton showers. It has been designed for, and so far primarily employed in the context of, hadronic collisions. In this note, we document the implementation of a few technical features that are necessary to extend its scope to realistic ee collider environments. We limit ourselves to discussing the unpolarized beam case, but we point out that the treatment of polarized be…
n this letter we investigate the various processes that can contribute to a final state consisting of a lepton, missing transverse momentum and two jets at Next to Leading Order (NLO) at the Tevatron. In particular we consider the production of W/Z + 2 jets, diboson pairs, single top and the tt process with both fully leptonic and semi-leptonic decays. We present distributions for the invariant mass of the dijet system and normalisations of the various processes, accurate to NLO.
We compute the 1-loop (alpha_s^2) correction to hard spectator scattering in non-leptonic B decay tree amplitudes. This forms part of the NNLO contribution to the QCD factorization formula for hadronic B decays, and introduces a new rescattering phase that corrects the leading-order result for direct CP asymmetries. Among the technical issues, we discuss the cancellation of infrared divergences, and the treatment of evanescent four-quark operators. The infrared finiteness of our result establishes factorization of spectator scattering at the 1-loop order. Depending on the values of hadronic in…
We present precise predictions for four-lepton plus jets production at the LHC obtained within the fully automated Sherpa+OpenLoops framework. Off-shell intermediate vector bosons and related interferences are consistently included using the complex-mass scheme. Four-lepton plus 0- and 1-jet final states are described at NLO accuracy, and the precision of the simulation is further increased by squared quark-loop NNLO contributions in the gg -> 4l, gg -> 4l+g, gq -> 4l+q, and qq -> 4l+g channels. These NLO and NNLO contributions are matched to the Sherpa parton shower, and the 0- and 1-jet fina…
In this work we investigate the NLO QCD+EW corrections to the top quark pair production and their effects on the spin correlation coefficients and asymmetries at fixed-order top quark pair production and LO decay in the dilepton channel, within the narrow-width approximation. The spin correlations are implicitly measured through the lepton kinematics. Moreover we study the EW effects to the leptonic differential distributions. We find that the EW corrections to the $t \bar t$ production are within the NLO QCD theoretical uncertainties for the spin correlation coefficients and the leptonic asym…
We calculate the $W^\pmγj + X$-production cross sections at next-to-leading order QCD for Tevatron and LHC collisions. We include leptonic decays of the $W$ to light leptons, with all off-shell effects taken into account. The corrections are sizable and have significant impact on the differential distributions.
We present details of a calculation of the cross section for hadronic top-antitop production in next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD, including the decays of the top and antitop into bottom quarks and leptons. This calculation is based on matrix elements for νe e+ μ- \barν_μb\bar{b} production and includes all non-resonant diagrams, interferences, and off-shell effects of the top quarks. Such contributions are formally suppressed by the top-quark width and turn out to be small in the inclusive cross section. However, they can be strongly enhanced in exclusive observables that play an important role…
We report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of W-boson pairs in association with a hard jet at the Tevatron and the LHC, which is an important source of background for Higgs and new-physics searches. Leptonic decays of the W bosons are included by applying an improved version of the narrow-width approximation that treats the W bosons as on-shell particles, but keeps the information on the W spin. A selection of differential NLO QCD cross sections is provided both for the LHC and the Tevatron. The QCD corrections stabilize the LO prediction for th…
We compare the leading and next-to-leading order QCD predictions for the flux of atmospheric muons and neutrinos from decays of charmed particles. We find that the full NLO lepton fluxes can be approximated to within 10% by the Born--level fluxes multiplied by an overall factor of 2.2-2.4, which depends slightly on the PDF. This supports the approach in Thunman, Ingelman, Gondolo (1996). We also find that their very low lepton fluxes are due to the mild slope they used for the gluon distribution function at small momentum fractions, and that substantially larger lepton fluxes result when the s…
Electroweak (EW) triboson production processes with at least one heavy gauge boson are of increasing interest at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) as direct precision probes of one of the least-tested sectors of the Standard Model (SM), the quartic couplings of the EW gauge bosons. These processes therefore offer promising opportunities for searches for indirect signals of Beyond-the-SM (BSM) physics. In this paper, we present results for fiducial cross sections at next-to-leading-order (NLO) EW and NLO QCD to $p\;p\to e^{+}\;ν_{e}\;μ^{+}\;μ^{-}\;γ$ at the 13 TeV LHC. This signature includes the…
We report on the precision predictions for the $e^+e^-\to ZZγ$ process including $Z$-boson leptonic decays at the ILC in the standard model (SM). The calculation includes the full next-to-leading (NLO) electroweak (EW) corrections and high order initial state radiation (h.o.ISR) contributions. We find that the NLO EW corrections heavily suppress the LO cross section, and the h.o.ISR effects are notable near the threshold while become small in high energy region. We present the LO and the NLO EW+h.o.ISR corrected distributions of the transverse momenta of final $Z$-boson and photon as well as t…
We study jet final states in diffractive deep-inelastic scattering. We present the QCD factorization formula in terms of diffractive parton distributions and discuss its implementation in NLO Monte Carlo generators. We compute NLO predictions for the diffractive jet cross section. We use this calculational framework to discuss theoretical models of the long-distance behavior.
We study the production of the four-lepton final state $l^+ l^- l^+ l^-$, predominantly produced by a pair of electroweak Z bosons, ZZ. Using the LoopSim method, we merge NLO QCD results for ZZ and ZZ+jet and obtain approximate NNLO predictions for ZZ production. The exact gluon-fusion loop-squared contribution to the ZZ process is also included. On top of that, we add to our merged sample the gluon-fusion ZZ+jet contributions from the gluon-gluon channel, which is formally of N^3LO and provides approximate results at NLO for the gluon-fusion mechanism. The predictions are obtained with the VB…
We present a calculation of the next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections to W+γ production, including the leptonic decay of the W boson and taking into account all off-shell effects of the W boson, where the finite width of the W boson is implemented using the complex-mass scheme. Corrections induced by incoming photons are fully included and find particular emphasis in the discussion of phenomenological predictions for the LHC. The corresponding next-to-leading-order QCD corrections are reproduced as well. In order to separate hard photons from jets, a quark-to-photon fragmentation funct…
We report on the extraction of the higher twist contributions to F_2 and R = sigma_L/sigma_T from the global NLO and NNLO QCD fits to lepton nucleon scattering data over a wide range of Q^2. The NLO fits require both target mass and higher twist contributions at low Q^2. However, in the NNLO analysis, the data are described by the NNLO QCD predictions (with target mass corrections) without the need for any significant contributions from higher twist effects. An estimate of the difference between NLO and NNLO parton distribution functions is obtained.
The aim of this thesis is the completion of the NLO automated framework of the MC program WHIZARD, accounting for NLO corrections in the full SM for cross sections and distributions of processes at hadron and lepton colliders. Specifically, it builds on the implemented FKS subtraction scheme for NLO QCD calculations, and extends it to automated NLO EW and QCD-EW mixed corrections. To that end, the implemented FKS scheme is generalised to systematically subtract QED and QCD infrared (IR) divergences in mixed coupling expansions. The automated computation of NLO contributions is validated for a …
The computation of the NLO-QCD corrections to the cross sections for W γγproduction in hadronic collisions is presented. We consider the case of real photons in the final state, but include full leptonic decays of the W. Numerical results for the LHC and the Tevatron are obtained through a parton level Monte Carlo based on the structure of the VBFNLO program, allowing an easy implementation of general cuts and distributions. We show the dependence on scale variations of the integrated cross sections and provide evidence of the fact that NLO QCD corrections strongly modify the LO predictions fo…
Recent progress in calculating lepton density functions inside the proton and simulating lepton showers laid the foundations for precision studies of resonant leptoquark production at hadron colliders. Direct quark-lepton fusion into a leptoquark is a novel production channel at the LHC that has the potential to probe a unique parameter space for large masses and couplings. In this work, we build the first Monte Carlo event generator for a full-fledged simulation of this process at NLO for production, followed by a subsequent decay using the POWHEG method and matching to the parton showers uti…
We compute the hadronic production of top-antitop pairs in association with a Higgs boson at next-to-leading-order QCD, including the decay of the top and antitop quark into bottom quarks and leptons. Our computation is based on full leading and next-to-leading-order matrix elements for $e^+ ν_e μ^-\barν_μb \bar{b} H(j)$ and includes all non-resonant contributions, off-shell effects and interferences. Numerical results for the integrated cross section and several differential distributions are given for the LHC operating at 13 TeV using a fixed and a dynamical factorization and renormalization…
We present the full next-to-leading order (NLO) corrected inclusive cross section for massive lepton pair production in longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions. All QCD partonic subprocesses have been included provided the lepton pair is created by a virtual photon, which is a valid approximation for $Q<50 {\rm GeV}$. Like in unpolarized proton-proton scattering the dominant subprocess is given by the $q(\bar q)g$-channel so that massive lepton pair production provides us with an excellent method to measure the spin density of the gluon. Using our calculations we give predictions for…
Precision tests of the Standard Model (SM) require not only accurate experiments, but also precise and reliable theoretical predictions. Triple vector boson production provides a unique opportunity to investigate the quartic gauge couplings and check the validity of the gauge principle in the SM. Since the tree-level predictions alone are inadequate to meet this demand, the next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation becomes compulsory. In this paper, we calculate the NLO QCD + NLO electroweak (EW) corrections to the $W^{\pm}ZZ$ productions with subsequent leptonic decays at the $14~{\rm TeV}$ LHC…
This paper describes the MC@NLO method for matching next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD with the parton shower and hadronization model of the Monte Carlo (MC) event generator tt Herwig++, for e+e- annihilation and Drell-Yan lepton pair production. Details of the event generation method as well as spin, flavour, momentum and colour assignments are presented. We obtain predictions for various distributions which arecompared with experimental data.
We study the effects induced by excited leptons on the leptonic tau decay at one loop level. Using a general effective lagrangian approach to describe the couplings of the excited leptons, we compute their contributions to the leptonic decays and use the current experimental values of the branching ratios to put limits on the mass of excited states and the substructure scale.
Contributions from external bottom quarks are neglected, because they are either numerically suppressed or should be attributed to different processes s…
The rates for generating a matter-antimatter asymmetry in extensions of the Standard Model (SM) containing right-handed neutrinos are the most interesting and least trivial coefficients in the rate equations for baryogenesis through thermal leptogenesis. We obtain a relation of these rates to finite-temperature real-time correlation functions, similar to the Kubo formulas for transport coefficients. Then we consider the case of hierarchical masses for the sterile neutrinos. At leading order in their Yukawa couplings we find a simple master formula which relates the rates to a single finite tem…
Measuring the polarization of electroweak bosons at the LHC allows for important tests of the electroweak-symmetry-breaking mechanism that is realized in nature. Therefore, precise Standard Model predictions are needed for the production of polarized bosons in the presence of realistic kinematic selections. We formulate a method for the calculation of polarized cross-sections at NLO that relies on the pole approximation and the separation of polarized matrix elements at the amplitude level. In this framework, we compute NLO-accurate cross-sections for the production of two polarized Z bosons a…
We complete the computation of the 1-loop (alpha_s^2) corrections to hard spectator scattering in non-leptonic B decays at leading power in Lambda/m_b by evaluating the penguin amplitudes. This extends the knowledge of these next-to-next-to-leading-order contributions in the QCD factorization formula for B decays to a much wider class of final states, including all pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar, pseudoscalar-vector, and longitudinally polarized vector-vector final states, except final states with eta or eta' mesons. The new 1-loop correction is significant for the colour-suppressed amplitudes, but…
We present the full next-to-leading order (NLO) corrected inclusive cross section $d^3Δσ/dQ^2/dy/dp_T$ for massive lepton pair production in longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions $p + p\to l^+l^- + 'X'$. Here $'X'$ denotes any inclusive hadronic state and Q represents the invariant mass of the lepton pair which has transverse momentum p_T and rapidity y. All QCD partonic subprocesses have been included provided the lepton pair is created by a virtual photon, which is a valid approximation for $Q<50{\rm GeV}$. Like in unpolarized proton-proton scattering the dominant subprocess is g…
These proceedings review the differential decay rates and the branching ratios of the tau and muon decays $τ\to \ell \ell' \ell' ν\barν$ (with $\ell,\ell'=μ,e$) and $μ\to e e e ν\bar ν$ in the Standard Model at NLO. These five-body leptonic decays are a tool to study the Lorentz structure of weak interactions and to test lepton flavour universality. They are also a source of SM background to searches for the lepton-flavour-violating decays $μ\to e e e$ and $τ\to \ell \ell' \ell'$. Even if the shift in the branching ratios induced by radiative corrections turns out to be small and of order 1% -…
We present results for the production of a top pair in association with a W-boson at next-to-leading order. We have implemented this process into the parton-level integrator MCFM including the decays of both the top quarks and the W-bosons with full spin correlations. Although the cross section for this process is small, it is a Standard Model source of same-sign lepton events that must be accounted for in many new physics searches. For a particular analysis of same-sign lepton events in which b-quarks are also present, we investigate the effect of the NLO corrections as a function of the sign…
We study the lepton flavor violating $μ^- \to e^{-}2γ$ decay induced by the mediation of heavy leptons such as the excited and fourth generation leptons. We have examined the effects of these leptons in the $μ^- \to e^{-}2γ$ decay. We have found that branching ratio of this decay is very sensitive to excited and fourth generation leptons. Furthermore, we have obtained the bounds on model parameters by using the current experimental limit of this decay.
The production of top-quark pairs that subsequently decay hadronically and leptonically (lepton+jets channel) is one of the key processes for the study of top-quark properties at the LHC. In this article, NLO QCD corrections of order $\mathcal{O}{\left(α_{\rm s}^3α^{4}\right)}$ to the hadronic process ${\rm p}{\rm p}\to μ^-\barν_μ{\rm b}\bar{\rm b} {\rm j} {\rm j}$ are presented. The computation includes off-shell as well as non-resonant contributions, and experimental event selections are used in order to provide realistic predictions. The results are provided in the form of cross sections an…
We present the first fully differential next-to-leading order QCD calculation for lepton production in transversely polarized hadronic collisions, pp -> l X , where the lepton arises from the decay of an electroweak gauge boson. The calculation is implemented in the Monte-Carlo like code `CHE' that already includes the unpolarized and longitudinally polarized cross sections and may be readily used to perform a comparison to experimental data and to extract information on the related parton distributions. We analyze the perturbative stability of the cross-section and double spin asymmetry A_TT …
For the first time the next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections to the full off-shell production of two top quarks that decay leptonically are presented. This calculation includes all off-shell, non-resonant, and interference effects for the 6-particle phase space. While the electroweak corrections are below one per cent for the integrated cross section, they reach up to 15% in the high-transverse-momentum region of distributions. To support the results of the complete one-loop calculation, we have in addition evaluated the electroweak corrections in two different pole approximations, one…
We compare fixed order and parton shower matched predictions for the process ${pp\rightarrow \ell^+ν_{\ell} \ell^-\barν_{\ell} \ell^{\pm}ν_{\ell} b\bar{b}+X}$ at NLO in QCD, including the orders $\mathcal{O}(α_s^3α^6)$ and $\mathcal{O}(α_sα^8)$. The comparison is performed at the integrated and differential fiducial level at the LHC with $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. In the absence of parton shower matching procedure that includes the full off-shell effects for this process at NLO in QCD, we propose a new prescription. It enables the inclusion of approximate full off-shell effects to currently available …
We explain how angular correlations in leptonic decays of vector bosons and top quarks can be included in Monte Carlo parton showers, in particular those matched to NLO QCD computations. We consider the production of $n$ pairs of leptons, originating from the decays of $n$ electroweak vector bosons or of $n$ top quarks, in the narrow-width approximation. In the latter case, the information on the $n$ $b$ quarks emerging from the decays is also retained. We give results of implementing this procedure in MC@NLO
We give a status report on the automation of next-to-leading order processes within the Monte Carlo event generator WHIZARD, using GoSam and OpenLoops as provider for one-loop matrix elements. To deal with divergences, WHIZARD uses automated FKS subtraction, and the phase space for singular regions is generated automatically. NLO examples for both scattering and decay processes with a focus on e+e- processes are shown. Also, first NLO-studies of observables for collisions of polarized leptons beams, e.g. at the ILC, will be presented. Furthermore, the automatic matching of the fixed-order NLO …
We explore the possibility of the existence of excited leptons in the light of recent data on muon $g - 2$ from BNL. We have been able to put stringent bounds on the relevant parameter space.
Understanding the polarisation structure and providing precise predictions for multi-boson processes at the LHC is becoming urgent in the light of the upcoming run-3 and high-luminosity data. The CMS and ATLAS collaborations have already started using polarised predictions to perform template fits of the data, getting access to the polarisation of W and Z bosons. So far, only fully-leptonic decay channels have been considered in this perspective. The natural step forward is the investigation of hadronic decays of electroweak bosons. In this work, we compute NLO QCD corrections to the productio…
The next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections to $pp\to l^+l^-/\barνν+γ+X$ production, including all off-shell effects of intermediate Z bosons in the complex-mass scheme, are calculated for LHC energies, revealing the typically expected large corrections of tens of percent in the TeV range. Contributions from quark-photon and photon-photon initial states are taken into account as well, but their impact is found to be moderate or small. Moreover, the known next-to-leading-order QCD corrections are reproduced. In order to separate hard photons from jets, both a quark-to-photon fragmentation…
